John Miller, Head of an international American school in Mexico City. Happy to talk professional development tonight with the inspiring educators of #engagechat
Hello #engagechat. Luis from RI joining in after 3 awesome days of professional development at #BLC18. Great sessions, conversations, and connections. Thank you to @MicrosoftEDU for the opportunity. So grateful.
While we're waiting .... we just returned from a road trip of almost 5,000 miles! It was terrific seeing teachers and staff I worked with over 20 years ago. #engagechat
Hello #engagechat! Lauren from New York — currently on leave from teaching 6th grade English to write another book. This one is about integrating #SEL into academic learning.
Professional development ... let's see
How about if we start with everyone who is thrilled with their professional learning raising their hand?
#engagechat
If you haven't had a chance to read the 4'Oclock Faculty by @RACzyz check it out...share it with your leadership and transform your school's PD #4OCF#EngageChat
Since @MikeUbbens & @mjjohnson1216 asked about PD, I’ve got to say that I am so over sit and get. It’s not useful to me. It needs to be dynamic & meaningful! #engagechat
I'll reply: My mission is to help those kiddos who come to me from trauma. To be even more empathetic and compassionate. To let them know that they are safe and loved at school. #engagechat
I bet many would agree. I also think condescension is rampant in #pd design and execution. Yet, do you see a need for administrators to monitor and make connections? #engagechat
Part of the reason I love what Twitter has to offer...allowing us to be globally connected professional learners...learning on demand, topics about which we are passionate!#EngageChat

@Hahne_Elyse, @MikeUbbens, @mjjohnson1216
Any professional learning experiences I had lead by Richard Allington changed my life as a principal, which changed what I shared with others and impacted student achievement. We even had him come to our rural school in WI #engagechat
Great hong about hour long PD is that I can spend 10 minutes being interested ... then realize that a) I already know it or b) it is irrelevant to me .., and 50 minutes daydreaming ... #EngageChat
The very best PD I've ever experienced was Trauma-Informed Bootcamp @DHEPrincipal & @cindy_blasi This one-day training was powerful in my efforts to continue my pursuit of helping all of my kiddos, but especially those coming into our schools, suffering from truama. #engagechat
In reply to
@nnekamcgee, @DHEPrincipal, @cindy_blasi
My mission for 2018-2019 is #LeadtheWhy. In my new role, being able to articulate the why will be critical to success. My motto for 2018-2019 is #soarhigher1819. I feel like I can always do more, learn more, and help more. #engagechat
Really want to work on moving our practices towards #BOLDschool practices..Finding that balance is key, and pushing our kids to new challenges w/o overwhelming them. Hattie puts is beautifully below (I've posted about 3 times in 24 hours, lol) #engagechat
I bet many would agree. I also think condescension is rampant in #pd design and execution. Yet, do you see a need for administrators to monitor and make connections? #engagechat
Best PD was break out classroom it was so fun and I am a visual/tactile learner and really understood how to conduct them and now I use them a lot #engagechat
Interesting. As admin, I always want to know what my teachers are learning (and assistants and secretaries) so I can learn alongside and have them as ed leaders on it. Also to see where I can support. #engagechat
Completely agree!! I have a handful of mentors who are helping me to learn more all the time!! The name, "trauma-informed.trauma-responsive" give a label to what I've always believed about teaching. #engagechat
A2: It has a great deal to do with the trust that Ts have of the leadership team. Are you credible as instructional leaders on a daily basis? #engagechat
That sounds like a powerful training! We really don't know what our kiddos go through sometimes, so I'm glad your training allowed you to have an impact. #engagechat
A2. Principals (I was one for 26 years) fail to involve teachers in the planning stages of professional learning. Something may be planned for the majority but then the minority (PE/choir) sit there and listen and often fume. #engagechat
I bet many would agree. I also think condescension is rampant in #pd design and execution. Yet, do you see a need for administrators to monitor and make connections? #engagechat
The best PD ever was one presented by @TeamSoc_Studies on using picture book in the Social Studies classroom... It was great because it was unexpected and a new way for presenting my content! #engagechat
Interesting. As admin, I always want to know what my teachers are learning (and assistants and secretaries) so I can learn alongside and have them as ed leaders on it. Also to see where I can support. #engagechat
A1. The best PD I've ever attended was the American Chemical Society National Conference. There were various types of learning areas, sessions, educ., research areas, other PD programs offered. #engagechat
Condesending? When you are TOLD what to do with no teacher voice!Empowering? When your voice is heard and those presenting value your voice. #engagechat
A2 When I’m not valued as an educator or a person who does have a clue. Empowering is making a connection, having a new idea, and being able to use it! #EngageChat
A2: I hate when I show up for a PD and it's actually a staff meeting or a logistical meeting. That's not PD. Big difference between professional work and professional development. #EngageChat
I bet many would agree. I also think condescension is rampant in #pd design and execution. Yet, do you see a need for administrators to monitor and make connections? #engagechat
Q2: What makes PD condescending to teachers? What makes it empowering? #engagechat Condescending when the presenter doesn’t talk to us like teachers but students. Empowering when it is hands on and creative and purposeful and we see the beauty of the content & how to apply it
That’s why professional learning needs to be similar to what we want our classes to be: voice, choice, empowerment. Our staff come up with the topic and plan to our strengths and ‘stretches’. #EngageChat
This is the next book in my line-up...I’m part of a newly created CRT team in my district & this is our summer reading selection...anyone in my PLN interested in reading/discussing along with me during the month of Aug? I’ve found the #BookCampPD approach so helpful! #G2Great
A2 setting and getting.... Make PD engaging and interactive.... Not just up and moving and talking to your tablemates.... but actually showing how to integrate standards, tech, instructional strategies into my lessons... #engagechat
Very cool! @kytelearning has amazing online PD. I designed one micro-credential course for Google Docs. Ts enjoyed being trusted with the freedom. #engagechat

Classroom design ideas - A teacher corner highlighting awesome educators- books, podcasts, chats etc. spread the beauty of Twitter to my colleagues #engagechat
A2. When administrators plan PD and fail to get input from T, as to what they feel their needs and weak areas lie, and just decide what is going to occur! When T are empowered, and can participate, this allows leadership, engagement, learning, and collaboration! #engagechat
A2: I hate when I show up for a PD and it's actually a staff meeting or a logistical meeting. That's not PD. Big difference between professional work and professional development. #EngageChat

All of my team’s PL this summer was virtual, housed on our district LMS, @schoology! Educators request credit using a Google Form at the end of each folder. 1 hour = 1 hour FLEX. #EngageChat
In response to PD...most schools remove choice from almost all aspects of the school day...show me a school where PD is directed down and I'll show you a campus that disengages during PD #Engagechat
The problem with me and PD is that within the first few minutes I know if it jives with me or not ... if it jives I want to work with it and develop activities but the PD leader won’t stop talking ... if it doesn’t jive I just want to leave #EngageChat
Wondering what other term or phrase someone has heard mentioned in a school that really stuck in their minds?
I can still here Sarah McElhone saying, "please come over here my friends so we can ...."
Loved it that she called her students her friends. #engagechat
Q3: What can teachers do to shift school culture from professional work to professional development? #engagechat I think building a positive school community based on trust and respect- strong relationships and admiration will help create a foundation of growth as a community
A3 We all go to work and have work to do. Shifting the mindset of work to development means we’re still developing, still growing, and still yearning to create a toolbox of ideas that we can utilize with our students or in our field. #engagechat
A3: We have to engage in conversations. We should be able to talk with our administrators about the types of PD we think can help us grow. I truly believe Admins want the best for Ts, but they have to know our concerns to enact change. #engagechat
The best PD I ever attended was at @TCTELA in 2016. The experience gave me an opportunity to connect with ELAR teachers, see exciting ideas in other classrooms, and I heard @JackieWoodson speak. It was phenomenal. #engagechat

A3. Teachers can share their own professional leadership experiences in a PD type format with other T, where we are learning from one another. Instead of professional work , it becomes professional development with co-workers! #engagechat
Let's start with referring to it as
professional learning
rather than professional development.
It has been one heck of a long time since I have been "developed"
#engagechat
Q3: What can teachers do to shift school culture from professional work to professional development? #engagechat I think building a positive school community based on trust and respect- strong relationships and admiration will help create a foundation of growth as a community
A3 Just like we give our students voice and choice; we need to value ourselves as educators, as learners, and speak up for what we want, how we want it, and how we can work to get it! #engagechat
Jon from Irvine coming in late! A3: Those who are most passionate about professional learning should have a forum to share with the staff. However, PD must eventually become “professional work” in order to make the dreams real so that others see its useful. #engagechat
The difference between professional work and professional development is CHOICE. One gives you what others think you need for growth, the other gives you what you think you need for growth. #engagechat

Summer? STILL loving @DavidGeurin's tweet! Soon, districts and schools will not implement "PD." Instead, educators will differentiate their own PL needs, and admins will monitor progress and growth along a journey defined by the learner. #HamstraHighlightshttps://t.co/025C7vXx0P
Questions like this are great because they should make us put ourselves in the kids' shoes. If you don't like PD delivered in x fashion, why on Earth would a kid? #EngageChat
The best PD or personal growth available is Twitter and Voxer and other forms of global education #engagechat I have grown more from these mediums than I ever did at university
I've never pulled ELLs out - but I believe in doing what's best for kids, so if it's best in a certain situation, do it. I taught newcomers who were mostly SIFE and arrived around age 17. They thrived. #engagechat
Have professional learning opportunities and experiences outgrown the systems we're using to track them? I'm STILL reflecting on this. #FellowsAtEdhttps://t.co/Q89OKguV66
Agreed- would you want to sit in your classroom, learn in your classroom if not- change your classroom - better yet let students tell you how to design it then they will own the space #engagechat
But I also teach colloquial English before academic English. It works for me - they end up speaking eloquently, getting past culture shock, and writing like pros #EngageChat
Professional learning opportunities are not one-and-done events; they’re starting lines from which to learn, grow, extend, and experience for a long time. #HamstraHighlights: https://t.co/MjL84cxbca
A3 @LaurenPorosoff When we recycle the systems of delivery instead of re-thinking PD, no one sees that as development...it as seen as a task to be completed...check it off the list and move on #Engagechat
During one of the PD days after Christmas break, three schools got together and had an afternoon of Edcamp style PD. It was amazing! I loved rereading what was discussed and utilizing some of the ideas. It also gave me new food for thought. #EngageChat
How often does the personal growth sessions you plan even end with each person writing down a plan for reflection about the learning that just took place?
Should it?
#engagechat
Yes! Mic drop 🎤 and when they choose our PD without our input it becomes mundane and stagnant as educators we look for purpose and purposeful PD is based on choice, relevance and interest #EngageChat
A4: We demonstrate how effective reflection is. The proof is in the results and most people want to see the benefits, not be told about them. #engagechat
"One of the practices I use at my workshops is to share ideas of some of my reflective thinking and then give the participants an extended break with reflection time embedded into it." @gcouros#InnovatorsMindset
A5: Reflection requires time; and PD sessions should allow for that time. If reflections are shared, it's important that educators be able to present their reflections without judgment and with respect. #engagechat
A4 We’ve got to reflect and make time for it. It’s so necessary to stop and think. I attended a session by @aaron_hogan and he provided time to reflect and blog right there. #engagechat
I truly believe that reflection is key - write and reflect daily BUT purposeful and meaningful feedback is just as important as asking our students for feedback really makes a difference #engagechat
A4: Its sounds bad, but reflection must be systematic. My teams reflect every unit using a simple documented structure. 1) what worked? 2) what didn’t? 3) what citizenship’s skills did we hit? 4) how do we get better? 5) what are the steps to get better/who does what? #engagechat
A4: reflection for me is visual. I write out notes& thoughts. I love sharing w/ others what's going on w/ my thought process. Colleagues I believe just asking probing questions. Be sure you have put in the time to develop that relationship so it's not misunderstood
#engagechat
A4. In learning, we need to reflect upon things where our weaknesses may exist, and our strengths. As you do this, map out areas you might like to investigate further in PD and reasoning if applicable. #engagechat
I only teach district PD at the science conference becausetgere are tons of choices and when teachers come to mine- they chose to be there- then the course is full and we have tons of hands on fun because they are present and interested #engagechat
A4 I have asked my students to self-reflect on their year using @Flipgrid and the last couple of years I have also asked them to let me know what I need to work on to make their experiences better. That has been an awesome execise and has helped me to grow. #engagechat
A4: I invited educators to reflect @Flipgrid right there on the spot, while AT the conference, but it wasn't effective. I think conferences are better F2F time, while the processing and reflecting unravel slowly over time. #engagechathttps://t.co/CCyzZ0zkmq
It's only in times of reflection where ideas grow more apparent, connective, transferable, valuable, powerful, and transformational. And personal. #HamstraHighlights: https://t.co/Rm2M92NRkS
A4b Reflecting through a given avenue opens you up for growth and vilnerability. It used to be daunting to me. However I won’t grow if I’m not moving forward! #engagechat
Hey y'all. I have to duck out. Thank you so much for this evening. @kerisavoca I'll be checking this class out tomorrow for sure! Have a great night y'all and see ya next Friday! #engagechat
A4) Reflection begins with observing the generic & theoretical and widdling down to the practical & personal. The process starts large and gets narrow as we think of how something may (or may not) work for us and or our students. #engagechat
Yes and it is a bit demeaning at times when we are out in a course irrelevant to us or simply something we have mastered- it’s a waste of time but there is some great PD out there when we are allowed to fill our own PD buckets #Engagechat
Did I include all "8 Things to Look for in Today's Classroom" as applied to PL in #InnovatorsMindsetCH12: Voice, Choice, Time for Reflection, Opportunities for Innovation, Critical Thinkers, Problem Solvers/Finders, Self-Assessment, Connected Learning? #InnovatorsMindset@gcouros
A4 Reflection should a core value...passed down from Leadership all the way down...we can imprint on the lives of our Ss so they can be reflective learners as well #Engagechat
I have a guess about where @daviswelcome is ....
He is traveling and in a different time zone and got them mixed up.
I like thinking positive things rather than something sad.
#engagechat
A6: Renind them that nothing is designed to suck. Be a sponge. Either you'll learn something new or be given confirmation that you're doing something right. #engagechat
A6. Sitting down and listening to what the new T has to comment and ask questions about, depending on subject area, if T feels needs in spec. PD areas, what are they, resources available?, How can we help? #engagechat
Gonna work more at reflecting by daily writing down goals and challenges for the yr... discovered this Panda Pro planner and Rhodia meeting book to help better organize thoughts and activities...both on Amazon #Engagechat
A6 Ask then what they’ve learned, what has stuck with them, and share ideas together. PD doesn’t have to be a large arena. It’s development toward growth & learning from one another. #EngageChat
Yes it is #followFriday and today alone I followed 60 new people- I never do that- but the suggestions were plentiful and the educators awesome so there you go... #EngageChat
A6: Supporting a new teacher is as much about listening as it is about sharing and modelling...learn about the learner and learn with her/him! #EngageChat
That is because every learner is different ... I can get just as much knowledge from reading the PowerPoint slides as I can from listening to someone present. I am looking for inspiration more than knowledge ... #engagechat
I’m not sure I can tag everyone. This chat has really been dynamic and I look forward to rereading & continuing to grow after tonight’s chat. #EngageChat
