  • MsSallySong Jun 4 @ 10:07 PM EDT
Q1: I give my 6/7s hwk to reinforce skills we've learned in class. However, struggling to make it "meaningful" & involve parents #bcedchat
  • MsVanBalkom Jun 4 @ 10:07 PM EDT
A1: Homework is never assigned but may need to be done if assignments not finished within class given time. #bcedchat
    In reply to @bcedchat
  • brynmw Jun 4 @ 10:07 PM EDT
A1: My hw policy started as all about completion of class, but then I struggled with those that struggled. needed something else. #bcedchat
  • rilmcknight Jun 4 @ 10:07 PM EDT
A1 as i teach in a flex timetable I give work to last for the three non contact day. Ss work at school only #bcedchat
  • MsOlwenCowan Jun 4 @ 10:07 PM EDT
A1: home is for home. School is for school, but if you dilly-dally you get to take school home. #bcedchat

A1 - principal now but when in the math classroom, saw the inequity is caused. Seen flipped approach work better #bcedchat
  • brynmw Jun 4 @ 10:08 PM EDT
Cool. Love that as homework. Something that is engaging and possible and not in place of classwork. #bcedchat
    In reply to @PeterVogel
  • courtenaysee Jun 4 @ 10:09 PM EDT
A1: With Gr 9 Ss, I try to always have classtime to work on it so I can assess understanding before Ss (maybe) take it home...1/2 #bcedchat
  • brynmw Jun 4 @ 10:09 PM EDT
Flipped is an awesome way to approach the homework question. Especially those that need guided practice. #bcedchat
    In reply to @cratman2
  • brigitte2008 Jun 4 @ 10:09 PM EDT
Sometimes math homework is to go home and try out the math problem with the family and be the expert. #bcedchat
  • brynmw Jun 4 @ 10:09 PM EDT
Yup. I wondered that, too. #bcedchat
    In reply to @brigitte2008
  • courtenaysee Jun 4 @ 10:09 PM EDT
A1: HW is considered 'practice' as I am moving towards standards based grading. 2/2 #bcedchat
  • brynmw Jun 4 @ 10:10 PM EDT
Love it. But what if they get stuck during 'practice' at home? #bcedchat
    In reply to @courtenaysee
  • MsSallySong Jun 4 @ 10:10 PM EDT
A1: My worry about NOT giving hwk is that kids spend HOURS on tech/social media at home w/ little-to-no P supervision #bcedchat
  • CraigMah - Moderator Jun 4 @ 10:11 PM EDT
Do you experience parent requests for more (and more) homework? How do you address? #bcedchat

  • DouglasReeves Jun 4 @ 10:11 PM EDT
In “Peak” Anders Ericsson suggests “gold standard practice” has immediate feedback and moves students outside comfort zone. #bcedchat
  • brynmw Jun 4 @ 10:11 PM EDT
This is the type of "hw" I love. Something that enriches with connecting between home and school. and gives confidence. #bcedchat

Sometimes math homework is to go home and try out the math problem with the family and be the expert. #bcedchat
  • brigitte2008 Jun 4 @ 10:11 PM EDT
In math there is as fine line between doing problems that are slightly outside of range that are doable and utter frustration. #bcedchat
  • DouglasReeves Jun 4 @ 10:11 PM EDT
It’s difficult to envision Ericsson’s “Gold Standard Practice” ever happening at home. #bcedchat https://t.co/9td2zVw02X
  • brynmw Jun 4 @ 10:12 PM EDT
That immediate feedback is important (or at least timely) How can that be done at home? #bcedchat
    In reply to @DouglasReeves
  • brigitte2008 Jun 4 @ 10:12 PM EDT
#bcedchat Sometimes we use the three in a row strategy. Get three in a row right and keep moving.

    Q2 coming up shortly. #bcedchat
  • brynmw Jun 4 @ 10:13 PM EDT
Q2: When can homework be useful in extending the learning? Or is it never useful? always useful? #bcedchat
  • dramaqueen4 Jun 4 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A1 #bcedchat Never anything new or requires support for home - usually finish what was started in class.
    In reply to @bcedchat
  • courtenaysee Jun 4 @ 10:13 PM EDT
Can ask for help-linear system works well with that. + Ss mark it themselves & self-assess. HW mark not counted in final score. #bcedchat
    In reply to @brynmw
  • brynmw Jun 4 @ 10:13 PM EDT
I love that, but what if the students struggle in understanding, even though they started in class? #bcedchat
    In reply to @dramaqueen4, @bcedchat

A2 Class can be chaotic and hectic. 'working at home' provides a quiet time to check in. See what they know or need support with.#bcedchat
  • rilmcknight Jun 4 @ 10:14 PM EDT
Q2 Homework is very useful if the Ss choose to extend the learning or go above good enough work #bcedchat
  • brynmw Jun 4 @ 10:14 PM EDT
I appreciate the self-assessment and not for marks. #bcedchat
    In reply to @courtenaysee
  • MsVanBalkom Jun 4 @ 10:15 PM EDT
A2: I don't like to use such inflexible terms but generally, I believe it doesn't extend learning 1/2 #bcedchat
    In reply to @brynmw
  • brynmw Jun 4 @ 10:15 PM EDT
Big if, though, around choice to extend. Are the routines/procedures that might help with that? #bcedchat
    In reply to @rilmcknight
  • courtenaysee Jun 4 @ 10:16 PM EDT
I say yes, but right now I'd say I encourage most Ss to try all of them. Confidence is hard to be sure of. + depends on asgmnt! #bcedchat
    In reply to @MsVanBalkom
  • MsSallySong Jun 4 @ 10:16 PM EDT
A2: I use @FreshGrade to set up at home conference for Ss & Ps to extend learning #bcedchat
  • MsVanBalkom Jun 4 @ 10:17 PM EDT
A2: too often it is used to "prove" that learning is happening; Also, punishing kids who don't "get it" as quickly as others #bcedchat
    In reply to @brynmw
  • courtenaysee Jun 4 @ 10:17 PM EDT
A2: It really depends on what the "HW" is...can be useful to confirm understanding of a topic, explore a topic more in depth..#bcedchat

A2: Students who get it, don't need the hw, students who struggle, can't do the hw. So, why do we give hw? Who does it help? us? #bcedchat
  • MsOlwenCowan Jun 4 @ 10:18 PM EDT
A2: sometimes engagement from school work turns up in home. Research, dialogue, shared interests #bcedchat
  • MsSallySong Jun 4 @ 10:19 PM EDT
A2: I really do not see hwk as punishment. As an upper-intermediate teacher, I have to teach my kids these skills for high school #bcedchat

The idea that homework doesn't increase learning is incorrect and ignorant. Key is doing it effectively. https://t.co/Ns8tufQwSC #bcedchat

The reason the research on HW is inconsistent is that articles are inconsistent in defining “homework”. #bcedchat

A7. IT DEPENDS. Make sure you know why you are giving HW, how it serves Ss learning, and what the follow up will be. #bcedchat

Q8: What role does work done at home play in your summative and formative assessments? #bcedchat
  • ChristineYH Jun 4 @ 10:56 PM EDT
Agreed. I wonder if there is a time & place students can complete "incomplete" work at school... like HW club or study block. #bcedchat
