CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
We had a week of holiday spirit with the girls this past week to help encourage fun before finals. #UglySweaterDay, #pajamaday, dress like an elf of Santa, and Christmas Card day. Silly fun that seemed to work.
Have fun! #CatholicEdChat
A1: we don't always have a Christmastime service project, but when we do, it is usually an adopt-a-family project where each homeroom takes on a family from a local agency. #CatholicEdChat
Good morning #catholicedchat! A1 We do our annual Day of Sharing and collect items for our local school district's Families in Transition program. https://t.co/W4iaNIY9Nr
Some of our classrooms are completing a reverse advent calendar project where students bring in diff. donations every day for our food pantry. #catholicedchat
A1 - Over the years at all the different schools I’ve taught at, the typical thing has been a food drive at Thanksgiving and then coat and toy drives at Christmas. #CatholicEdChat
A1: Our entire @RSMSchools HS Ss & Ts goes out into the surrounding communities for an afternoon of service. Groups go to places like women's shelter, soup kitchen, etc. #CatholicEdChat
A1. We do a lot of projects. We coordinate with the parish to raise money for our sister parish in El Salvador. This year, our kids are using chore charts to earn money towards buying school uniforms for their brothers and sisters in El Salvador. #CatholicEdChat
Sean from Orland Pk IL. Dir. of Instructional Tech at Marian Catholic. We have a food & gift drive for families in need. Every homeroom ‘adopts’ a family and brings in food and gifts for their family. Families pick up their donations yesterday. #catholicedchat
A2. Our kids will be performing Christmas songs at a nursing home and a home for recovering addicts. We have built a strong relationship with both communities. #CatholicEdChat
When I was in high school, my German teacher took us to a retirement home for nuns to sing German Christmas carols. I can still do Silent Night (“Stille Nacht”) from memory.
#CatholicEdChat
A2 We spend a large part of the day with each class from K-8 making different ornament, cards, decorations for our Day of Sharing. Here is my class with their treasures. #CatholicEdChat
Our parish @s_margaret_mary has a tree filled with Angel tags to take home and buy a gift for the person listed on the tag. @SMMschoolOmaha families were encouraged to participate. #CatholicEdChat
I have really liked the chore chart this year for fundraisers. We have too many kids whose parents will just give them cash. We wanted it to be more intentional and sacrificial. #CatholicEdChat
A2 Here they are choosing items from the giving tree for their families to purchase items to be given to the school district's Families in Transition Program #catholicedchat
Good morning from snowy La Loche Saskatchewan where I teach grade 3 slept in this morning , although not as late as last week when I slept through the chat completely #catholicedchat
Karen Smith here from very rainy MD. Hopping in and out while tweeting photos from our Breakfast with St. Nick that is currently underway. #CatholicEdChat
One of our grade one classes made cards for local businesses and hand delivered them. Our pre k class was all set to visit the long term care residents but sadly the visit was canceled because the residents were sleeping in. #catholicedchat
Q3 What types of challenges arise in carrying out service projects during this time of year? How do you best approach and solve these challenges? #catholicedchat
#catholicedchat A1 in the past we have had our younger grades write or draw Christmas cards for our homebound parishioners. The ministers or priests can take them when they visit.
#CatholicEdChat Here’s the K student who brought in chore money first and was able to hang a piece of “uniform clothing” on
the clothesline we put up in the lobby.
A3 It is a crazy time of year with all these activities. The best thing to do is to relax, be flexible, recognize the importance of the projects, and enjoy the moments with your students. Tomorrow is another day and things will get back to normal soon, lol. #CatholicEdChat
A3: for us the two biggest issues are fundraising burn-out and trying to balance a focus on others with the student focus on finals. Our solution to both issues is planning. #CatholicEdChat
My students @Room113SMM will have a Sing Along with the parish Senior Saints on Thursday. Here are some pictures from a past sing along. #CatholicEdChat
This is my class with our advent wreaths. We had to go out into the hallway so we could sit in a group. The students will take their wreaths home this week. #catholicedchat
A3 I think that parents are tired and busy this time of year, so another project can feel like a to-do list rather than a way to engage in service. Keeping the actions on the kids rather than parents helps. #CatholicEdChat
A3 @porcupine5edu and I are having Student Council hold a Breakfast Food Drive for the Frederick Rescue Mission and transportation of the donation is a problem #CatholicEdChat
A4. Ken here in the SF Bay Area. One challenge is when service is compulsory the personal impact is lost. Or when $ substitutes for service. #CatholicEdChat
This month's Casual Day money went to the @NCEATALK so they could sent it to the Californica Schools that are taking in public school students after the fire. #CatholicEdChat
But then a solution popped into my head this AM - my daughter comes home from college Monday night. She’ll deliver the collected food for us this week! 😊 #CatholicEdChat

A3. Parents are overwhelmed with holiday activities and the financial burden that Christmas brings, so we try to focus on things that don’t require time outside of school or money. Makes it harder but we have never lacked ideas! #CatholicEdChat
A local Catholic school had a mug drive for a homeless shelter. Students could clean out their parent's extra mug to bring in for the mug drive. #CatholicEdChat
From visits with veterans to making cards for shut-ins and delivering toys, warm clothes and food to those who need it, these Jersey students have eagerly embraced the true meaning of Advent and Christmas. https://t.co/75mrXtRV26
I know! Simple but great for the Homeless shelter as having a real cup of coffee instead of in a styrofoam cup gives dignity to the guest and is 'green' too. #CatholicEdChat
A4: We partner with local communities or the @SNDdeN to support one of our other network schools or a project being sponsored by the sisters. #CatholicEdChat
A4 Locally @NeumannLeaders collects and distributes clothing to organizations in need. This month, over 10K items have been delivered! https://t.co/2DBfJIo1dk@NeumannUniv I'm honored to be a part of this effort & to witness the incredible generosity of others #catholicedchat
#catholicedchat A4- one thing we did a few years ago was to invite a panel of speakers from those who help the homeless and we had a homeless man as well talking to the kids brought it to life.
Being able to include the voice of those being served is so powerful. Our juniors have a service retreat where they go to work at an agency in the city. There is always a conversation with some of the people who run the agency and a client. Talk about impact! #CatholicEdChat

We meet at the end of our Day of Sharing as a school. Reps from each class show what their class made, then we end with the Rosary bringing it all together. #CatholicEdChat

Yes. High Schools do have the benefit of being able to offer more. Our Service Leadership Team publishes a monthly newsletter that includes information on service opportunities throughout the year so Ss can always engage in something they are passionate about. #CatholicEdChat
