the difference & tension sometimes between facilitating and presenting. https://t.co/LrsgUNy8DK
what was your biggest take away?
A1: We have looked at the impact of our work. What happened as a result of our coaching
Hi everyone, Stuart from Auckland, NZ. Just obtained Google Trainer certification!
A1: improvement in student learning; reflection on practice; sustainability of goal areas
At least one more of our friends is at today!
Glad to be here. I hope I can keep up with the learning curve.
A1: I have Ts reflect on their growth and student growth. I want to quantify both as well.
Hi! Donna, ITF from NC. - only 4 emails left in my inbox! .
My is being hired as a math interventionist/math coach for 16-17!!
Being an ongoing learner is what it's all about! https://t.co/rN0SquLte4
Glad to be here. I hope I can keep up with the learning curve.
We are here so you can SHINE!
Another was learning from .
A1 Student test scores (grades 3-8 and NYS Regents)
MISSED you today. Needed a translator, but know you are where you should be. Ready to share.
A1 I've analyzed how time is spent, but other areas are anecdotal. Need a more structured way.
Liz here from Coppell, TX. Just came across by accident. Eager to learn!
Thanks Kathy, due to the time difference, didn't come through until 6.30am! Got there in the end!
Welcome. Glad you found us. You found us for a reason! :)
A1: Everytime possible, I measure coaching through student evidence. That's why we're there!
Megan, instructional coach from IL. Stopping by a little late this evening.
I agree! My eval is highly anecdotal. Isn't coaching largely relational? How eval a marriage? A Friendship?
A1 How engaged students are and their level of agency in the classroom.
Teacher effectiveness, implementation and level of comfort. Student success, achievement and
Hello ! Knikole, Blended Learning Specialist from Texas
A1 We want to support Ts where they need it. Developed a needs assessment and always feedback/followup forms.
I have data from my google calendar for time spent as well; I agree we tend to work from anecdotal standpoint
I agree. It's hard to get the full picture with numbers, but it's easy to over/under estimate with anecdotes.
A1. I like to get the T fb on coaching, was it helpful...how do we know. I suppose it depends on what/why it is happening
Great point Donna, feedback and forward is essential and needs to be timely!
Q2 How do you share the data collected? Who do you share it with?
being student centered is so important! You're right-it's about impacting student learning
A1: Not sure. Hope I can find measurables in T goals and how connected they will have become during the year.
I give out and EOY survey that asks Ts to give fb & identify ways i can improve & how they've worked w/me https://t.co/5BpMiHy2Gs
A1 I've analyzed how time is spent, but other areas are anecdotal. Need a more structured way.
anecdotals will be on my list for next year. Great idea.
A1 Agree totally w/ that relationships are key to coaching. Just like with our kids.
A1 I measure effectiveness by student achievement/teacher effectiveness and teacher growth by our observation rubric
Email obs findings straight after, then tracking maps. A2
How do you measure engagement? Schlechty's work or something else?
This sounds awesome, in-school developed? A1
Rookie ? here: What's a tracking map?
I measure teacher goals via student data/evidence. There's no better measure!
A2:Data is shared through individual conferences, department meetings and PLC's.
A1: I always enjoy the follow up or reflection with a teacher after we have co-planned a lesson or unit & it has been implemented.
Would love to hear more about tracking maps.
A1: I want to measure my effectiveness through setting goals with my colleagues and seeing student evidence
Choose 5 students and every 5 minutes, check on task or off.
definitely depends on context but any feedback is helpful, so think it's great to seek it regardless
A2: T, admin, and in some cases district level for presentations, celebrations, etc
Map of the classroom, mark T's location on it every 5 mins for whole lesson.
Love Google Calendar for this! I use # in the event name to categorize activities. Ex.
A2: All coaching notes, data & reflections shared on Google Doc only with teacher. It's a collaborative document that guides work.
Very easy to do, hard for Ts to argue with.
It's all about the students and evidence of learning https://t.co/D0Xtax1atf
being student centered is so important! You're right-it's about impacting student learning
Thanks for the tip. I will look into it!
needs assessments are critical! I think assuming or presuming things could impact relationships
Very cool, just check it out!
A1: Being in the classroom to co-teach or support is helpful in seeing the implementation of teacher/coach collaboration.
A2: I keep a log w/in Drive of data from each coaching cycle as well as my data pulled from my calendar-all supports my reflection
I'm trained to collect the data. Let me know if you have questions.
Anyone using instructional rounds?
Great point and as often as possible. A1
Measurable goals are important to monitoring success. Great point!
Sounds a lot like a CHAMPS/PBIS observation protocol. Love it!!
There have been coaches that have used Instructional Rounds (that have come to in the past)
There have been coaches that have used Instructional Rounds (that have come to in the past)
A2: pos. obs and feedback shared with teachers regularly. Postive! It is about building relationships and working together
A2 Ts, PLC groups, parents, administrators through face-to-face meetings https://t.co/DZqqLscZMR
Q2 How do you share the data collected? Who do you share it with?
Yes! Putting student work at center gets rid of that awkward feeling Ts have of "you're here to fix me." https://t.co/GAbdqvJlXM
being student centered is so important! You're right-it's about impacting student learning
A2 Like quantum physics, measuring a thing changes it. I struggle with data getting in way of authenticity.
Really easy to analyse too.
ditto! had a great example of a feedback survey in Google forms
Q2. I'm very transparent. I want to model how data helps and informs and I recognize it makes us vulnerable. Also share w/admin
. Absolutely- personalized learning can’t happen without it.
Getting trained this 8/11-12 Looks interesting
. We are looking at this in our county.
We also track all our Ts on GAFE capability via a Google Sheet.
Q3 What tools do you use to gather/organize effectiveness data?
I love this. Transparency is so important, but it also allows for continual collaboration.
On the "most used" shelf of my bookcase! Huge Randy Sprick fan! Gotta have the positive in place!
. Had an intro last week. Found that I need to be less judging and more “just the facts”
Yes! We are partnership, learning and growing together, focused on student achievement!
I agree, also ensures honest evidence-based conversations.
A2 I share this data with my supervisor and principal. It is not required, so I mostly use it for reflection.
A2: I suspect Google forms are practical since they put data in a handy spreadsheet.
A3: just bought NotesPlus and GAFE of course! Sharing is essential to coaching and it is easy with GAFE
A3 Looking at ELL data, we look at differentials between whole group %ages and sub-pops. Good way to see quickly how close we are.
A3 Walk through information, formal observations, and student data. https://t.co/gCVs9kEKlh
Q3 What tools do you use to gather/organize effectiveness data?
Agreed! Also great for me to track evidence of my intentional questioning.
Q3 Anecdotal, Google Forms, ask questions, LISTEN, learning more about instructional rounds
thanks! This is a great resource for a new instructional coach.
One day, I'll understand the words you say. Until then...
Patience, Grasshopper. We have much to teach each other.
A3 Someone once shared a form in . I don't remember who. Sorry! I use it for analyzing time. I can email to whomever wants it.
You can use mme moe to do this. We have an environment for coaches and mentors and for teachers and principals
thanks again! I love the areas you gain feedback on; it helped me refine my survey w/Ts
This is great! Thanks for sharing!
I have a time analysis form somewhere. I'll dig it out later. Remind me if I forget. https://t.co/hmdodNRc8c
A3 Someone once shared a form in . I don't remember who. Sorry! I use it for analyzing time. I can email to whomever wants it.
Q4 What are barriers to measuring the impact/effectiveness of an instructional coach?
A3: I know some use the Susan Woodruff inventory as well for measuring effectiveness
Mine could use some revamping. I'd like seeing any example others use.
A4 How do we accurately measure the effect of relationships? That aspect of our position gets overlooked in data.
That would be super helpful. The time issue can't be understated.
Q3. When I go into a CR, The pre-conference focuses on the T developing the data tool he/she wants. It is fantastic and they fit T
A4: As a 1st year coach, I found it difficult to measure impact other than T input-they're so busy, I hate to ask!
thanks for sharing!! This is a great example
So true. And sometimes it takes a while to see dividends. https://t.co/JWY14LSLjR
A4 How do we accurately measure the effect of relationships? That aspect of our position gets overlooked in data.
A1 (late!) My favorite school data model. Definitely do NOT have all this information avail:
A4: Sometimes our coaches get caught in some of the clerical things and data. They are amazing multi taskers.
A4 Some times a barrier is waiting for the perfect tool. So many great ideas shared tonight!!!
A4: The effect may not be immediate. It's also hard to track the long lasting effect when the cycle ends. Old habits die hard
A4: our role is so multi-dimensional; often so many factors that aren't able to be quantified impact our effectiveness
A4 Another barrier can be inconsistent understanding of coaching and what to measure across a district.
A4: Culture change/building teacher leadership are hard to measure. They are my primary goals.
A4: Time. Not all teachers respond to a survey, sometimes those who really matter
Learning curve...never attached to Twitter. Hmmm, help!
A4 when qualitative data is used w/quantitative data I don't see many barriers. Ultimately, the Ss will tell the whole story.
So true. Yet measuring this time can make an impact on changes to the coaches role. :) https://t.co/HcbjOFt6UV
A4: Sometimes our coaches get caught in some of the clerical things and data. They are amazing multi taskers.
so true! Sustainability holds true on student evidence of impact. Can be difficult to keep accountability
Q5: What are ways of assessing an instructional coach’s trust/relationships with teachers (an essential for coaching)?
A4: New at the job, but I suspect T resistance to coaching and time to spend w all Ts might be barriers. Want to see your barriers
I made myself a tshirt that says: Performs other duties as assigned!
Have a look at mme moe https://t.co/1y7aCluGWk It goes a long way to meeting many of these issues. Makes PL visible.
My computer says that link contains malware????
A5: I think the number of interactions that are initiated by the T. If they trust you, they will come to you and it feels natural
Yes I got that error too. Deleted two previous Tweets. So sorry, not sure what's up!
amen! Isn't that the truth! Maybe I need one too 😂
what does effective for each Coaching experience? https://t.co/IyYvF628nx
Q4 What are barriers to measuring the impact/effectiveness of an instructional coach?
IDK either. Thank you for sharing your resource! Maybe it will work later. :)
Totally. And it's a team effort, too - admin, teachers and IC have to be on board and on the same page. https://t.co/UoL99BZQtZ
A4: Culture change/building teacher leadership are hard to measure. They are my primary goals.
A5 Maybe monitor the types of conversations you have with teachers over a week time span. Set your own criteria.
To what extent has the coach transferred agency and the technology of coaching to the teacher. Or not!
A5: Trust is about sharing decision making. Contributions to change and goals should be shared amongst the coach and teacher
A5 Surveys and the amount of teachers who volunteer/request to work with the coach. Or just listen in the lunch room! haha
A4 Sometimes less is better. I really like 1 or 2 open-ended questions to avoid the “check response quick to get it done”
+1 "transferred agency" Brilliant metric!
A5: I always ask for anonymous FB on trustworthiness and if Ts feel they have a good working relationship w/me in my survey
I was once asked to stop at Walmart to buy an adult banana costume.
I keep reading FB as "Facebook" not "feedback" LOL
A5: Ditto https://t.co/Dr4JJgnzkU
A5 Surveys and the amount of teachers who volunteer/request to work with the coach. Or just listen in the lunch room! haha
A5: con't-also, enrollment says a lot sometimes; if you build the trust and ongoing relationship, they "should" come
There are too few adult banana costumes in this world
At least you weren't asked to wear it.
Q6: How do you decide how to schedule your time as a coach in order to be effective?
the lunch room says all!! Haha
A6 Districts hire me and assign my time. Not my choice. Creates interesting dynamics
A5 1 way 2 measure relationship factor is how willing T's are to use coach. Requires vulnerability & vulnerability requires trust
A6: Prioritize. Required meetings are a must. Then T time is next. My admin is in agreement that they have to be priority.
Now there is an effective use of a coach! https://t.co/OkUIbv7TNN
I was once asked to stop at Walmart to buy an adult banana costume.
Nope! That was our principal's job!
A4: Not actually working as an Instructional Coach is definitely a barrier. 😬🍎
Yes, exactly! Trust and relationships take time but must be ongoing https://t.co/ULcCv0g5Mt
A5: I think the number of interactions that are initiated by the T. If they trust you, they will come to you and it feels natural
A6: I need help with this one. I need a plan for my downtime, as well as prioritizing admin goals.
Haha I was driving by Walmart anyway. It was no big deal - just funny!
Agree! And Google forms allow you to aggregate feedback in a csv, so you can gather FB over time.
A6: I plan on creating a schedule for myself where I will attend all PLCs, schedule obs. Times, and intervene in my I/E periods
+1 csv to aggregate feedback. Great idea!
A6 we use you can book me. Some Ts schedule standing times. Flexibility is key. Leave as much time open for Ts.
A6. My principal & I discuss at the beginning of the year. Ts at different level of support... https://t.co/Kt6MsVDaeo
Q6: How do you decide how to schedule your time as a coach in order to be effective?
I've probably done things like that as well. Anything to help teachers!
We've used Forms for our planning.
A6 Work to be available when Ts are. Opps to work with Ts that I haven’t worked with before are high on priority list.
A6: my goal's based on data pulled and analyzed from my Google calendar weekly and monthly; my goal's 50% or higher supporting Ts
I actually have one of those banana suits and wore it for a video one time.
A6 Think about how many Ts you can effectively coach. Set up cycles w/that set. Then move to the next set.
PeteCashmore🚶🏻by today.
In Santa Clara, CA.
When I noticed+😮
👁👁🙃😬😳
😮 he coughed.
Didn't take a📷😠
A6: district trainings/meetings for next year already on calendar. A few teacher requests too. Then send coaching menu in fall
Do you like that app? Is it hard to block out the times you're unavailable. Still use planner
A6 Student and Teacher needs come first for me. I can do paperwork later. I use the urgent/important quadrants as a guide.
I'm currently working on a blog post on the Bullet Journal. I think there is potential for coaches.
tried to do a Study. I applied to 4 a research lead.They didn't hire me😐
It didn't take off
one of my biggest ahas was not to feel guilty on reading/pulling resources for coaching during the school day
They didn't hire me.
It didn't take off.
There is a direct correlation
B/w those two events.
There is unexpected downtime at certain points in the year and in the day. I'll be prepared now.
Let me know if you ever want to pursue this more via virtual coaching. My goal is for you to SHINE.
Q7: What type of goal setting (short & long term) do you use with teachers you work with?
My BA is in SocialScience.
I can elucidate+ verbally explain HOW culture + climate changes (Schools)
yep, pretty much happens later that day or evening! 👍🏽
I'm not "official" science coach but I get lots of requests for help. I'm hoping I'm making a difference https://t.co/NtEp3Ksmkz
Yes, exactly! Trust and relationships take time but must be ongoing https://t.co/ULcCv0g5Mt
A5: I think the number of interactions that are initiated by the T. If they trust you, they will come to you and it feels natural
My problem, too. It's such a mindshift since I was a T for 17 years.
Too bad. Do you know what happened with the study?
I may just have to try this. Good idea having the link in your email signature.
This side convo is cracking me up!
I'll have to give it a try!
thank you!! I will see how I handle things once the year begins
A5: TRUST:
1️⃣You know by the stuff people tell u.2️⃣Either they trust u
3️⃣they're overwhelmed
4️⃣have no filters
5️⃣Intuition
Q8: What goals will you be setting for the coming school year? How can you measure your progress?
I'm terrible at chats because I get off-topic on the sidechats.
Tonight will be dubbed the
A7: My goal is to always make T goals both short and long term measurable as well as actionable and sustainable
A8: increase % of Ts I work with.
Increase time in classroom. Listen.
Find the next steps.
A8: Meet with other coaches to set some measurable goals. A year's experience has me excited!
I'm sure you are making a difference, Kathy. People wouldn't come to you if you were not!
Guilty! Focused on keeping research off the teachers' shoulders. Or that's what I kept telling myself.
welcome to the club! So many books, so little time! Need to prioritize :)
Coaching is NOT about a position. It is a frame of mine. Coaches area all around us!!!!
That's it's own chat. Amazon is a member of my family.
We need to start some sort of an book swap/share.
A8. Blend PD, fill in gaps based on EOY fb, use tech to support coaching/model, #1 cheerleader 👏🏽 for Ts https://t.co/6J6QSF5wzD
Q8: What goals will you be setting for the coming school year? How can you measure your progress?
ohh!! I am a summer book nerd! Added to the list!!
Q9: Do you have any other questions for each other in the area of measuring effectiveness?
A8 I have hard goals and soft goals. One goal is to as says "put Ts in the big chair."
Genius! I love this idea! I also love mail. I've wanted to do a tshirt exchange with my !
Me too! My husband LOVES to get the CC statement. :)
Thank you! https://t.co/tR3WRhmvhm
Coaching is NOT about a position. It is a frame of mine. Coaches area all around us!!!!
what will your first step be?
A7: Set an achievable goal on a specific SE (or TEK in Texas) and seek improvement of ELLs on the SE. Rinse and repeat.
A8 My goal is 75% or more of my time being spent in coaching conversations and direct work with Ts and Ss.
Totally in for a book swap.
Great idea! Traveling books!!!
A8: setting personal goals of being in classrooms as much as poss. Setting goals with teachers
Meet with Ts who want cycles during 1st 9 wks and put dates on my calendar & LISTEN to what they want to accomplish
I want to job shadow local coaches.
check out chat topic tonight https://t.co/qeC70kD5Ry
Q9: Do you have any other questions for each other in the area of measuring effectiveness?
I'm not but will have to look into it. Have you used this?
