Problem with our education system is the funding of public schools based off property tax zip codes, promoting inequality. Republican philosophy punishing poor performing schools funding rather than reorganizing and investing in technology & teachers dooms system #SatChat
A1 Reflection leads to improvements for the next day, the next week, and the next year. It is an easy way to take responsibility upon yourself so that you do not become stagnant in your career. #satchat
A1. Reflection is one way of realizing the highs and lows of the past. As an educator it's our responsibility to improve, and reflection presents one way of taking that first critical step. #satchat
We need to be paying teachers a comfortable, living wage. No teacher should ever have to work two jobs to survive or worry about their students having the supplies they need to succeed. Teachers shape the character, caliber, and future of our children #SatChat
A1: To know where I’m going and how I can improve and grow, I have to know where I am. That’s only going to come through self-reflection. True anywhere, but especially for educators (IMO). #satchat
A1 - Self-reflections, along with data, can help us to understand what worked/didn't work in our classroom. We can adjust accordingly and create a more effective classroom. #SatChat
A1: Self reflection is important bc we can always do better for our students. Reflection helps us self-evaluate where we were & how to get better as educators & people #satchat
A1: Educators should reflect not only to see what works and doesn’t in their practices, but also to see where we need to grow and how we can best serve our students. #satchat
A1 Our job is constantly changing - new students, new curriculum, new challenges and goals. We can’t keep doing the same thing day after day, year after year. Self reflection helps teachers adapt and improve. #satchat
Self-Reflection is crucial in improving our instruction & evolving our teaching craft. As educators, we must be willing to learn ourselves! #satchat#READ5305
A1: For the sake of our students, we've got to reflect on what we've taught, the experience we've created for them, and who we were while we were doing it. All of those have a ripple effect their learning #satchat#makeitreal
A1. Plan. Do. Study. Act. (And repeat times infinity). “We do not learn from experience... we learn from reflecting on experience.” - John Dewey #satchat
A1. Self-reflection makes it more likely that you will truly learn from your experiences. Folks who are serious about learning and growing, must be serious about reflection. #satchat
A1: Self reflection allows Ts to identify best practices, refine ordinary practices, and reject inferior ones. It helps us to become aware of how we look, act and talk with Ss. It also helps us understand how our actions determine student responses. #satchat
A1: Reflection allows us to look at what went well, what needs fixing, who we reached, who we didn’t. Reflection is what takes teaching from a task to a craft. #satchat
A1 Reflection is how one improves their craft. When I played baseball, I thought about every at bat, every play I made to see what I did both right & wrong. Same thing for a teacher. It is arrogance to believe you never have room for improvement #satchat
A1: We must practice what we preach, since we model what we get! Self-care is a big part of self-reflection. It's important for students & teachers alike to be kind to ourselves when honestly reviewing our progress. #satchat
Dr. Kollegala Sharma is a staunch advocate for science in #satchat Kannada. His podcast Janasuddi discusses scientific articles and papers, and covers talks. Today he joins us at BLiSc as part of the Jigyasa Project speaking on Science & Language. @kollegala
A1: Reflection is important because it allows us to stop and think about what went well, what didn’t, what you wanted to happen. . .and most importantly think about the WHY. You’re able to create a plan of where to go next and make adjustments along the way. #satchat
It's important because there's always room to grow and improve. Education and our students are always changing; we need to be able to change with them in order to be effective. #satchat
A1 There are so many external changes going on in a school year - curriculum, students & families, world events are always changing. We need to constantly self-reflect and tweak our teaching to ensure we are giving students what they need. #SatChat
A1) Self-reflection allows you to study your educator footprint before it disappears in the sand; is it deep enough, does the pattern make sense? Then you can move forward. #satchat
A1: It's the only way to continuously improve your craft. You have to be willing to look at what went well and what you want to improve to meet the needs of your S's and your professional goals. #satchat
A1: it's also important to reflect so that we're able to understand how they feel when they reflect. If we can empathize, we can help them grow and learn because we've been there recently. #satchat
A1: Through self-reflection comes learning, growth & progress! Without self-reflection merely experience. We should never confuse experience with wisdom...one requires merely being there the other requires taking the next step of thoughtful reflection. #satchat
Since the #FakeNews is full of distortions, underreporting, and lies, we launched a platform tonight presenting a comprehensive record of @realDonaldTrump’s administration. The truth will be told about a remarkable 500-day record of accomplishments! https://t.co/pqScZ7slh9
A1: The process of self-reflection allows us to improve our teaching strategies and/or gain an understanding about a challenge or problem. It allows us to recognize our mistakes and then learn and grow from them. #satchat
A1: Self reflection helps you see your strengths and areas of need. You can build on those strengths & find ways to improve. It’s important though not to be too hard on yourself!#satchat
A1: Whether we are reflecting on a lesson just taught, an interaction with a S or colleague, a decision we have made as leaders or our practice in general, reflection gives us the chance to bring new light to what we do and come in always ready to improve. #mindset#satchat
#SatChat A1 Reflective practice is the hallmark of a good classroom practitioner and should be a feature of good school #Leadership At the heart of Adaptive Leadership is work on the inner-self which also requires time-out or reflection.
A1: Educators are constantly assessing resources, management techniques, strategies, student process and monitoring, instruction delivery -- those are few of the endless things we constantly question. It is vital to self reflect. It allows us to birds eye view ourselves. #satchat
A1: To serve as a model for students, but also know that there is never a summit for the mountain of learning; There's alway more to climb & ways to improve. #satchat
Self-Reflection, regardless of career/job, is how we become better ... every athlete reflects on a game to identify areas of improvement ... without reflection we are destined to never improve. #satchat
A1. Education is a fast paced, challenging profession and reflection allows you to slow down, to think, to process, so that you can celebrate and refine yourself. #satchat
A1: To know where I’m going and how I can improve and grow, I have to know where I am. That’s only going to come through self-reflection. True anywhere, but especially for educators (IMO). #satchat
A1: Once Ts become proficient in self reflection, they think before they speak and act with Ss, which in turn ultimately helps to create an environment conducive to learning. Great Ts change in ways that help their Ss find school an exciting place to be!! #satchat
A1 There are so many external changes going on in a school year - curriculum, students & families, world events are always changing. We need to constantly self-reflect and tweak our teaching to ensure we are giving students what they need. #SatChat
A1 Educators need to self-reflect, because it's a great way of formative assessment that can lead to real, lasting impact in our classrooms. If we consider what's working, what needs improvement, and how we can collaborate better, our staff and students will benefit #satchat
A1: Reflecting as an educator is paramount in not only enhancing your effectiveness but more importantly with promoting the success of students #Satchat
Kelli, Principal in NJ checking in late :) - A1: Reflection helps to keep us from doing things "the way we have always done them". If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten. #satchat
A1 | Self-reflection turns awareness into a good habit; I notice it gives me https://t.co/CbXqexcypU. to share about with colleagues, turning into productive conversation and enriching friendships. #satchat
A1: “By 3 methods we may learn wisdom:
First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and Third by experience, which is the bitterest.”
~Confucius
Reflection=Wisdom
#satchat
A2. Writing is perhaps one of the best ways to engage in reflection. Discussing anything and everything you've learnt and penning them down is a great way to remember them for future references and intellectual support. #satchat
A1: Through self-reflection comes learning, growth & progress! Without self-reflection merely experience. We should never confuse experience with wisdom...one requires merely being there the other requires taking the next step of thoughtful reflection. #satchat
A1 to reflect especially with a “critical” friend is to discover, know, question, consider sources of dissonance and internal bias in our work #satchat
A1 We need to purposefully carve out time to ask ourselves, "Am I a better educator than I was last year?" "Did my students gain from my work in the school?" "Did I help my colleagues grow?" #satchat
A1: Reflection is crucial for keeping education fresh, exciting and innovative. It allows us to improve and enhance our practice year on year. #SatChat
A1: Self-reflection is the path to growth and improvement. It's the process of being honest with yourself and assessing what you've done well and where you can do better. #satchat
I do some self reflection but I do find it hard to find the time to do it. Also, it seems hard to out it into words when sometimes it is primarily feelings. #satchat
A1: because teaching is not about failure avoidance, it's about error correction. Best and only way to do that is to reflect on what worked and what didn't and why. #satchat
A2: depending on the area for reflection, journaling, video or audio recording, analyzing student assessments, surveys, student observation, and peer observation can guide us in the process of self-reflection #satchat
A1: I am part of a system that supports the current dominant culture, and any reflection requires more than "self" to be useful.
Change won't happen without true reflection, and most of us (including me) too cowardly to reflect beyond the shimmer of our mirror image. #satchat
Yes, and videoing is very popular with our students and faculty as well - with all the editing tools, we joke that it's becoming the "new" writing! ha! #satchat
A2 To create engagement in reflection, you must start with sharing what is REALLY happening in your classroom. The best way to do this is by inviting others to observe. If this doesn't work, film it. #satchat
A2: Take time to invite in students, staff, and coaches through ObserveMe initiative. Ask the tough questions and receive feedback that can allow you to evolve your instruction and assessments for the better. Would you want to be a student in my classroom? Why/why not? #satchat
Same here. I've started giving my self Instant Reflections moments. Instead of reflecting on the day, I'll just take a couple minutes or even seconds right away to reflect on a situation and make note of it. I'm becoming more trained to "auto-reflect" this way #satchat
A2: One way to engage in reflection is to sometimes just slow down, remove the distractions and have some quiet time to reflect. I often make lists when I reflect. #satchat
A1 It's important to reflect with someone who isn't just like us. We need to see things, including ourselves, from a different perspective, even if the truth is uncomfortable. #satchat
A1: As educators, it is as if we get on a train in Sept &, while we have good intentions, that train just keeps going because it has to. Progress report, holidays, report cards, assessments-never time to sit back & think about what we are doing & if it is working. PD helps #satchat
A2: The most important thing for me is to dedicate time each day for self reflection...like anything that’s important, it has to be a priority. For me, the best time to reflect is when I unplug & exercise each day. #satchat
A1: So often we focus solely on student performance in the classroom. Teaching is an art & a science, the best “artists” take a step back and reflect on their work. #Satchat
A2: As a staff we are constantly reflecting on our practice in staff meetings but it is also important to reflect with the children to get their insight #SatChat
#satchat since my school @DAS_Schools started the @ibpyp journey, I have been using selfreflection a lot. I figured out that we can't improve, grow, change.....etc without it.
A2: Take a minute after lesson to jot down highs and lows. What Qs were asked where you stumbled for an answer? Where were you successful in providing help/knowledge? Then go back over it later to make adjustments for future lessons. #satchat
A2 The end of the school year is a good time to look back and find areas to improve and change, but we should really be reflecting every day, every lesson. Raise your hand if your lessons go better during second and third periods. My poor first period students… #satchat
A2 Twitterchats! Also making sure we take time during the day to quickly (or not quickly) take stock of what went well that day and what could have been better. #satchat
A1: The fixes that need to be made in education so ALL kids can be successful learners will only be found when schools empower their greatest assets - teachers. They are the solution to the issues we face. Reflection at the core. #satchat
Yes. Yes. Yes! End of year is really busy and as a tech person, my projects are about to be revved up. Get rid of old and install new. The chaos has begun. #satchat
A2: There are endless possibilities or reflection! We can do it formally prompted with questions, we can peer reflect, or even at the end of the day, the class, or the year by just looking back and considering the needs of Ss and your own as an educator #satchat
A2: Take time to invite in students, staff, and coaches through ObserveMe initiative. Ask the tough questions and receive feedback that can allow you to evolve your instruction and assessments for the better. Would you want to be a student in my classroom? Why/why not? #satchat
A2: For T's, I like using the quick - what went well, what do I want to improve, what resources or support will I need Q's. #satchat Then set a plan/goal for that. PDCA!
A1. I once read about self reflection that at the start of a day you should go over the previous day and pick the 3 high points, and the 3 points you can learn from #satchat
#satchat A2 Keep a journal. What went well, and what didn't? It's amazing the perspective you gain from writing things down, especially after a bad day.
A2: A preferred method of mine is to chat with grade team partners and colleagues across grade levels. These informal conversations me help me realize that other Ts face similar concerns that I do. From there, I ponder ways to facilitate change. #satchat
A2: I know no better way to reflect on anything than through reading, writing about it, and then discussing about what we wrote (basically what we're doing here!). This is the same as the age old Trivium. Read, write, talk! #satchat
A2. Reflection is so pivotal and the ways in which we can practice are endless. I really enjoy reflecting through discussions with fellow educators, through readings, blogging, and with my students. #satchat
A2. When you feel like a champion at the end of the day, ask what went right? If you feel defeated, ask what can I do differently? Also, ask the Ss why the day did/didn’t work. #SatChat
Teachers are so busy in the moment, responding to students, making decisions about learning... we need to stop to reflect since there isn’t often time to think during our hectic days. Reflection=growth (not just for teachers 😜) #satchat
A1) Self reflection allows us to stop and smell the roses. It allows us to focus in on the little things that we would not see or acknowledge. Also a time to breathe!#SatChat
A2: I love to reflect while I’m traveling to and from work. I think about the good and the bad & what changes I can make. I also walk with a colleague at lunch & we brainstorm a lot!#satchat
#satchat A2. I step back..and just think what's good and what I need to change. This year, I've learned the value of honest feedback. Also, I like 1:1 conversation with people I trust
A2: we can provide surveys to Ss, colleagues, parents. We can participate in collaborative discussions & reflect on what was shared. Write a letter to yourself in the fall, open at the EOY & reflect. Take a moment to stop, breathe, and reflect on the moment. #satchat
Next year, we plan to carve out PD time for teachers to reflect in various ways: writing/blogging/portfolioing, classroom visits... Need to take reflection outside of the eval process for teachers #SatChat
Grad class I took last semester really spoke to importance of journaling. Anyone have any effective journaling methods for self reflection? #satchat#READ5305
Good morning #satchat. Jeremie Smith from IL. A1. I think self-reflection is critical to provide a sense of measurement of previous goals set. When combined w/feedback from others it provides a nice sense of direction for new goals. I think self-reflection holds hands w/change.
A1: Reflection allows our brains 🧠 to recognize that what we have learned is important and to remember what we would like to change next time around! #growthmindset#satchat
A2: I ask my older students for anonymous feedback. One of the questions I ask,"How can I improve this class." It's the hardest question I ask all year. #satchat
A1 Self reflection to me is understanding where I began and how I got to where I am now. Learning from the failures. Building on the successes. Valuing the relationships and experiences along the way! Happy summer everyone! #Edtech#satchat
A2: At the end of the day, jot notes on lesson plans and materials, take a minute or two at the end of every lesson to talk to students, slow down ... be honest with yourself. #satchat
A2 joining late! Tool for reflection has definitely been my blog. Given me the space to lay out my thoughts but also allow others to share in my learning too. #satchat
A2: Reflection doesn’t have to be cumbersome. Jotting a quick note after a PE class is over reminds me of what I need to change for next time. #satchat
A2: One way for reflection is to keep a journal or blog. Admittedly I have fallen short on my goal of reflection through blogging this year. That being said in a couple of weeks when the year ends I’ll self-reflect and establish some new goals for the 18-19 school year! #satchat
Same here. I've started giving my self Instant Reflections moments. Instead of reflecting on the day, I'll just take a couple minutes or even seconds right away to reflect on a situation and make note of it. I'm becoming more trained to "auto-reflect" this way #satchat
A2: I agree. There has to be visible evidence that learning is taking place for ALL students and at the center of this is a classroom assessment practice (as opposed to a standardized system) focusing on the formative use of assessment. #satchat
A1: because teaching is not about failure avoidance, it's about error correction. Best and only way to do that is to reflect on what worked and what didn't and why. #satchat
A2: 5 Ways to Engage in Reflection as an Educator....
1. Participate in a Twitter Chat
2. Blog
3. Talk to Your Colleagues
4. Attend an Edcamp
5. Visit other classrooms and schools
#Satchat
Wonderful, Kathleen! It's a good thing that you are open to videotaping lessons! It's actually convenient to observe yourself that way; one doesn't miss out on intricacies in behavior and response that might be ignored while taking notes. #satchat
reflection has to be intentional ... can't be told to go sit down and reflect on what happened ... what stood out to you on that given day ... what "baggage" are you carrying home with you? #satchat
Democrats enslaved my great-great- grandparents. Democrats segregated my great-grandparents and grandparents.
And now they want me, a 15 year black boy, to think they care about me?
I’ll pass. The chains are gone and now I’m free. #MAGA 🇺🇸
A2: I have a purple notebook that I carry with me always. I use that to write things down and then reflect at the end of the week. I use these reflections to set daily and weekly goals. #satchat
Self reflection is a critical part of professional learning & development! Self-reflection = some of the best PD! This is how we learn & grow; we consider what’s going on around us & then reflect inward to self-assess. #satchat
Good morning from NJ! Self reflection helps keep Ts from becoming stale. It's important to reflect on what we've done well, and equally i@portant to recognize what needs fixing. #Satchat#growthmindset
A2: We can practice self-reflection through face to face conversations with fellow educators, Twitter chats, book studies and blog posts. But sometimes a long walk in the woods with my dog is all I need. #satchat
#SatChat A2 Reflection can take the form of written reflection such as journalling, meditation, or (as I did) make an mp3 recording of each lesson with notes for Ss to come back to but allowed me as T to come back to for reflection. Video works well, audio easier to do on the fly
I'll also use my phone to help. If my reflection needs later action, I'll set a reminder with a quick "ok google, remind me to..." or a google keep note. That's been a big help in remembering my reflections #satchat
A2 A wonderful self-reflection tool for adults and kids is a Leader in Me "Plus/Delta". Things going good are listed as a Plus, and things to change are listed as a Delta. With young kids you can call it "Glows/Grows" #SatChat
A2: Ask your students about their experience. They give great feedback that can help your transform your teaching & learning to be even better! #Satchat
While I agree with your statement. White people pay a lot of money to be segregated by choice. It's not a red vs blue issue. neo liberalism def is a huge factor but so is white people not wanting to be around people of color. #satchat
Problem with our education system is the funding of public schools based off property tax zip codes, promoting inequality. Republican philosophy punishing poor performing schools funding rather than reorganizing and investing in technology & teachers dooms system #SatChat
I also can confirm that I did in fact refer to @DonaldJTrumpJr as a Fifth avenue red neck. :-)
He really is one of the funniest people I know and it’s cool to see one publication interested in hearing the truth about his character.
Thanks @willpavia!
https://t.co/YFMxhGxQiM
I've got 4 kids and a wife who sings professionally so carving out chunks of afternoon/evening time to reflect successfully is not on the menu for me #satchat
A2. Consistently ask kids how things went for their learning... end of a topic/unit/lesson/project. Helps to build trust when the teacher intentionally makes changes based on student feedback. #Satchat
Self reflection keeps us honest - it allows us to take measure of how we ate dong meeting our goals. Self reflection makes us slow down and think about about the "why" #satchat
A2) In my planner, I have a space for notes==Use 3 abbreviations to drive my thinking: 1) what happened that was WOW (worthy of wonderful); 2) what happened that MTM (missed the mark) 3) And next time, what could be done to IL (Improve Learning) and why. #satchat
A3: One way - Admins can schedule monthly data meetings to allow Ts to engage in meaningful discussions with each other about student performance and their role in helping Ss achieve even more. Horizontal and vertical articulation are both important. #satchat
There is a fine line between reflecting and deflecting; whenever possible, land on the side of reflecting because that’s where we learn, where problems get solved & where processes improve; deflecting only perpetuates the problem! #satchat#HackingLeadership#HackLearning
Reflect with a purpose, so it's meaningful. We can reflect on our own or with students, administrators, & our colleagues. I like to use guiding questions. Also, it's important to focus on the positive, too. Reflection can celebrate successes along with promoting growth. #satchat
A2: During my time as a student teacher, we were required to keep a journal/reflection log. It was therapeutic, as much as it was a reflective practice. #satchat
A2: YES...It must become a priority if a learning community is to be successful in growing strong learners - and it must be a collaborative effort of the ENTIRE community. #satchat
With a free CMS, like Slack, you can create channels for each month of the year. Log reflections weekly. Then review them at the end of the year. #satchat
Reflect with a purpose, so it's meaningful. We can reflect on our own or with students, administrators, & our colleagues. I like to use guiding questions. Also, it's important to focus on the positive, too. Reflection can celebrate successes along with promoting growth. #satchat
A2: PD allows for self-reflection time. It’s time to engage in new practices and contemplate how they can interact with or replace existing practices. That is why I am a workshop facilitator & not a “presenter”-so I can allow for each session to be about each participant #satchat
A3: AS an admin, I'm always trying to be creative with scheduling. Our Ss and Ts need TIME for this, so how can we provide it in chunks, small bites, or just a relaxed enough environment that they feel less pressure and anxiety. That's the challenge #satchat
A3 Admin can encourage self reflection by taking the emphasis off of formal observations and evaluations, and instead asking Ts for regular self reflection. Ts (and admin!) can share their own self reflection in order to encourage it in others. #satchat
A3: Self relation is best supported when you are given time during professional learning, tough situations, evaluations to really sit and think about the what&why. Admin and colleagues should be building in opportunities to reflect, think, and explain. #satchat#metacognition
A2 I think it’s important to be intentional with creating questions that provoke reflection. Regardless of the medium used to capture the thoughts the important thing is that T’s find the connection/relevance to their work. #satchat
Exploring one of the worst government scandals in recent history: IRS targeting. Catherine Engelbrecht says her nonprofit voting rights group was unfairly singled out. #sharylattkisson#IRS#scandal
A2) Reflection does not have to be structured but it is helpful such as data meetings and post conferences for evaluations. It can also be informal such as on the ride home from work or when sitting pool side or on the beach! #SatChat
A3 Encourage others into your staff meetings, giving another perspective on what you are seeing as a teacher. The school librarian is a great place to start ;) #satchat
A3 Admin can encourage self reflection by taking the emphasis off of formal observations and evaluations, and instead asking Ts for regular self reflection. Ts (and admin!) can share their own self reflection in order to encourage it in others. #satchat
A3: One way - Admins can schedule monthly data meetings to allow Ts to engage in meaningful discussions with each other about student performance and their role in helping Ss achieve even more. Horizontal and vertical articulation are both important. #satchat
A3: Again, if we want individuals and teams to grow, we must be willing to honestly REFLECT on where we are - individually & collectively - and then act on that reflection to change. Early & often. It’s a culture thing. #satchat
A3: Admin should give opportunitiesfor reflection whether it’s through PD, specific reflection time, or just being a support for informal reflective conversations. Ts can observe each other to reflect on their own practice and also through colleague conversations #satchat
A2 Build in reflection time into goals and professional learning-our culture is built upon making thinking and learning visible so it is a natural part of our community #satchat
The Left doesn't care that more Americans have jobs, unemployment is down, and the tax cuts are working -- that would require them to admit that @potus's policies are working. https://t.co/QpA3dozDz2
A3: Reflection can be supported in schools by providing and facilitating opportunities for reflection and when appropriate sharing our own reflections #satchat
A2:Simple end of the day reflection...Plus (What went well) & 🔺(What Needs Changed) this can be done by Ts & Ss.
The more that I think about it...student reflection are as essential component in a teacher’s reflection. #Satchat
A2 I seem to do a lot of reflection in the car, driving to & from work. I now keep my phone handy and use voice to text in Google Keep to record my thoughts (I seem to forget them awfully quickly!) #satchat
A3. Giving hours for writing blogs, encouraging reflections during plcs using pd to use data aggregated during reflection to incorporate change #satchat
A3: Modeling and leading by example. Blog, publicly reflect on their practice, Including the areas they fell short. Create a culture where it's ok to make mistakes as long as we are working towards getting better. Takes trust and time! #satchat
A3: When the school culture involves reflection, then everyone grows. Admin, Ts, support staff & Ss should all be reflecting so that progress can be made, goals, can be met, necessary changes can be made. We have to work together and be open to reflective conversation. #satchat
A3 Build in reflection time into goals and professional learning-our culture is built upon making thinking and learning visible so it is a natural part of our community #satchat
A3 Build relfection into staff meetings and PD. Create a school community where asking questions about methods and practices isn’t seen as a negative #satchat
A3: All professional learning time should have reflection time! Highlight new ways to reflect. Looking forward to a podcast with Ts next year as a way to reflect and share! #satchat
A3 Yes. The formal observation supervision process is not the best way for teachers to improve #satchat It wasn’t for me as a teacher and I don’t see it as so now that I am a school leader
A2. Reflecting each morning in a “Gratitude Journal” helps me stay positive and appreciate all the incredible people in our district and community! #SatChat
A3: Instead of meetings that could be an email, have a faculty reflection time where colleagues are given the tools to guide their reflections and the confidence to share them. Feedback from others in the trenches is invaluable. #SatChat
I only saw Kate Spade in the purse section. I heard of Anthony Bourdain's show but knew nothing else. After their #suicide both were celebrated household names. If only this love & support came last week. Should we have #CheckOnYourPeopleSaturday? #SatChathttps://t.co/J8za4ubpuc
To all Americans and the rest of the world I’m honored to call @POTUS a friend. He’s one of the best negotiators of all time and I’m looking forward to him adding to his historic success at the Singapore Summit.

#SatChat A3 School #Leadership teams in Australia need to support T reflection as it is required for renewal of Govt Teacher accreditation every 5 years. Australian Professional Standards for Teachers also require it.
Q3 - Have staff talk about it at a meeting. Just don't be boring when you do it or no one will want to reflect... (reflection already "sounds" boring - but it ain't) #satchat
Exactly- holding ourselves accountable is sometimes difficult but then also finding a balance between reflection that is positive and honest without being extremely hard on ourselves. #satchat
We have a weekly PLC ... i would love to see this time with teacher evolve into a weekly reflection time where teachers share what is happening in class ... without it turning into a complaining about the kids session. #satchat
A3: Reflection is central to school improvement. It needs to be modeled by those that do it well and prioritized and practiced by those who lead. It also must be a responsive practice - focusing on next steps. #satchat
#satchat A3. Discuss ways we Reflect..I'm going to start keeping a journal. I think maybe just give the time for staff to reflect..maybe team during PLC..Maybe individual
#satchat The problem with the education system is that the tax dollars are misused. Not all teacher that teach should be teachers. A college degree should not be required to be a teacher. Teacher screening needs to be stricter.
A3: Building a culture that supports reflection starts with reflective leadership. Sharing your honest self-reflection and being vulnerable while uncomfortable sets the stage for others within the school to follow suit! #satchat
Agreed! As a former principal, I’d ask teachers to reflect on a lesson as opposed to spitting out generic lesson plans. Take time to really think about a lesson and how it connected for kids. #satchat
A3: Admin should give opportunitiesfor reflection whether it’s through PD, specific reflection time, or just being a support for informal reflective conversations. Ts can observe each other to reflect on their own practice and also through colleague conversations #satchat
A2: Reflection happens so many ways for me whether it’s blogging, using a journal, having conversations with my colleagues and my #40cfpln, and sometimes it’s just quiet contemplation! What I have found over time is if I don’t reflect I forget! #satchat
A2 I built self-reflection into my daily routine as an AP and principal with my Daily E-mail. Reviewed my calendar and looked ahead, asking, what are our short-term goals and long-term priorities? #satchat Reduce e-mail, maximize reflection: https://t.co/6bZIfgDt2O
Illegal immigration is a scheme being used by the Democrat party to create a future base of liberal voters, destabilize our culture, and destroy the rule of law
This is a great idea - keepint track of ideas throughout the day is hard. I try to do it digitally, but I find I rarely go back to look at my notes the way I would with pen and paper. #satchat
#SatChat A3 Example from Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (3.6.2) "Evaluate personal teaching and learning programs using evidence, including feedback from students and student assessment data, to inform planning."
A3: Research continually emphasizes the importance of reflection in all fields. Reflection gives students the opportunity to connect learning to real life and answer that critical question... #satchat#STEM4All
A3: Admin needs to make sure they listen first and foremost. They can help provide the path to improvement through PD, PLC’s, visits, resources, etc. Opportunities need to exist for staff to interact & learn from one another. #satchat
A3: Provide Ts with PD that helps them to develop reflection techniques. Allow time for Ts to discuss reflection with each other or talk about strengths and weaknesses. #SatChat
A3: All professional learning time should have reflection time! Highlight new ways to reflect. Looking forward to a podcast with Ts next year as a way to reflect and share! #satchat
A3: Create a schedule that gets Ts together: Common planning, Data session, group grading, Pineapple charts, #observeme. The admin have to do their best to put these interactions in motion. #satchat
A3. Making time (and maintaining protocol!) for PLCs is crucial to supporting job-embedded teacher reflection efforts. Instructional coaching has likewise been transformative for our school. #satchat
A3) Admin helps when they permit reflection without threat of evaluation in the process; Ts want to "talk it out" and get ideas but not feel like they are being scrutinized for that; Ts help each other through thoughtful conversation #satchat
A3: Quite simply give Ts time to talk to one another! Let us follow the natural learning cycle: plan, work, reflect - just as we do for our students. #satchat
A3. I feel data meetings are a great place for us to start & most of us do that. I feel to help move these data meetings forward PD needs to be provided to help facilitate discussions that promote growth, honesty and trust. Development that helps us work as a team! #satchat
It is hard, but too many kids are not making it, and today there are no options for those kids. We cannot change realities in kids lives but we must strive to build school that work for all. Right now there are huge gaps that must be closed. #satchat
A3: Time is the key- Admins can provide time for common planning, PLC’s, etc. The other key is building a strong climate and culture in a building. With collaboration, collegiality, and trust, the sky’s the limit. #satchat
A3: Admins can build in time for reflection and colleague visits. Teachers can help each other reflect by carving out time to talk about the lessons taught and asking questions that prompt discussion. #satchat
A3: Admin can model for teachers, by creating a culture of reflection and proving opportunities for teachers to reflect in a safe-space (non-evaluative).
Allow teachers to observe and reflect with each other. We can learn so much from each other. #Satchat
A3: In addition to modeling self-reflection allowing purposefully scheduled time such as common planning time built into the school day is another way leaders can support self-reflection! #satchat
A3: As a school counselor, I often work w Ss to stomp out the ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts). But self-care & care of students is the job of everyone! We're all responsible for each other. This ANTs process can be used for all of us - good questions for reflection. #satchat
A3: Create a schedule that gets Ts together: Common planning, Data session, group grading, Pineapple charts, #observeme. The admin have to do their best to put these interactions in motion. #satchat
A3: I know it may sound simplistic and challenging, but meaningful reflection can be best supported by providing quality time...not necessarily lots of it, but time away from the hectic pace in order to recalibrate and celebrate! #satchat
A3) Time for reflection is mandated in NC schools when you look at the development and monitoring of your personal professional development goals yearly. The structure can also be put in place by teachers when completing data chats with students. #satchat
"In 2015, a police officer was 18.5x more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male was to be killed by a police officer. Black males have made up 42% of all cop-killers over the last decade, though they are only 6% of the population."
https://t.co/sWFtrpXUCC
A3 Principals, if you want your teachers to self-reflect & collaborate, build in time to allow this to happen! #satchat Speak to the importance of self-reflection in your next fac. mtg, encourage a few short testimonials, and then ADJOURN meeting early to give them time to do it!
Join us at 9:00AM (EST) at #BookCampPD as we talk about choice, control, & 'peeling the onion' - some of the topics discussed in The #Path2Serendipity! See you soon!!

A4 Actually working on end of the year survey this morning for my students to evaluate me When reading them, I tend to throw out the top and bottom and look for the middle, kind of like judging in figure skating #satchat
#satchat time, great topic today too. not in .edu, but love the hashie & what it brings. (wonderful group of educators thinking, sharing...great stuff.♡)
A4. Feedback! Each student's feedback and response can lead to productive ideas for teachers to pursue in the forthcoming year. It's important because they're the only ones at the receiver end of all the learning and teaching that happens in the classroom. #satchat
A3: Need a reflection activity for the EOY? Have you tried students Year Mapping! Allowing students to bridge connections between the years content, understandings, and real-life... check out number 5! #STEM4All#stem#satchat
A3 By being honest of what is going on in your classroom. How many times do you walk past a classroom and see a teacher lecturing? Is there a better way? Some of our practices are complete boredom for the students so we need to change/adapt. #satchat
A2 Setting aside time to reflect is key. Often we reprioritize it to the back of the line. I reflecting while driving or exercising. The only problem with that is I cannot write down a "ah-hah" moment so I hope I can remember it until I can safely make a note. #satchat
As can support reflection by modeling & encouraging reflective practices, so it becomes part of the school culture. As can ask reflective questions that lead to deeper thinking. Ts can reflect together through PLCs. Other perspectives are important during reflection. #satchat
A4: Students are imperative to educators self reflection. It is so important that we give students a climate where they feel they can voice their feelings about content, support for themselves and peers, strategies, classroom happenings. They are our eyes and ears. #satchat
Why did #AliceJohnson, 1st time drug offender, get life? In the '90's, Jesse Jackson and the Congressional Black Caucus demanded Congress pass a tough law to combat the urban cocaine trade. It did. Clinton signed. But when blacks started getting busted, the law became "racist."
A3: Admin can help build it into T's goal setting. All T's have some type of evaluation system. Why not use it to self assess and set goals for yourself instead of waiting on someone to tell you what you need to improve. #satchat
Same here! The Washington beltway doesn't leave much room for reflection, other than the cars in my rear-view mirror. Thankfully I have a few back roads. I've gotten some pretty good ideas by going home the "back way." #satchat
In reply to
@spaul6414, @artFling, @MathDenisNJ, @HeatherLieberm2
A4 - An end of the year assessment of the class/teacher...but be careful with this one...Ss may give high marks to the teacher who is 'fun', but may not be effective for learning. #SatChat
I am so dangerous to liberals that instead of trying to reason with me or apologize for failing to live up to who they "claim to be" they have resorted to calling me a Nigger....
.
I want to make this VERY CLEAR this is real life.
LIBERALS ARE CALLING ME "NIGGER" ON TWITTER.
A3. I feel data meetings are a great place for us to start & most of us do that. I feel to help move these data meetings forward PD needs to be provided to help facilitate discussions that promote growth, honesty and trust. Development that helps us work as a team! #satchat
A4: Being open to feedback from students can provide important perspective for the reflection process. When it comes to educators, their feedback is often one if not most important #satchat
Do you have favorite protocols that have been particularly successful? Planning to run reflection-themed PD next year, so I'll take all the suggestions I can get! #SatChat
A4: Ss see more of your craft than anyone else. They are highly critical and honest and if given the vocabulary can tell you what you need to do to keep them awake. #SatChat
A4: Have Ss complete a reflection on the lesson, 3-2-1 fashion, that includes something they did not understand or how they think they might have learned it better. Use their ideas in the next lesson. They are the one learning; let them have some say. #satchat
Who wants to be #Fullycharged ?!?!

A3 In our individualized PD Ts create portfolios of their learning - in portfolios they reflect on what went well, what didn't, on areas of growth & areas that still challenge them. We have 2 hours per week for PD, so they have reflection time build in #SatChat
A4. Engaging Ss in the reflection process is the best thing I’ve done for my classroom. Not only is their feedback essential in bringing into our own practice but it also teaches them great habits for encompassing growth mindset. #satchat
A4 Student feedback should be part of reflection. We can’t truly answer, “How did that lesson go?” without hearing from students. If we’re open to it, we won’t even have to ask, they’ll just tell us. #satchat
A4 The student voice in reflection is essential. If it is going wrong or right they will happily share why. Sometimes we can get it wrong and listening can sometimes be the best way forward. #satchat
A4: Students can be asked for feedback that teachers and administrators can use in the reflection process...but students should also be provided opportunities to reflect on their own learning as well. I’ve seen this done through journaling as well as through blogging! #satchat
A4: This year I used @seesaw to have students maintain work portfolios. I often look back on their work as part of my reflection in order to determine my effectiveness. I also use Google Forms to elicit student feedback on a variety of topics. Their input is invaluable. #satchat
A4: Students shows us what their needs are all day every day. We need to focus and pay attention to them to gauge what we need to do! Giving them an opportunity to tell us never hurts either! #satchat
A4: Ss need to reflect because it encourages them to focus on the process AND the “end result” Ss can be part of reflection of things happening around the school, in the classroom or about themselves. We need to encourage them to reflect on what they’re doing & saying. #satchat
Economists Say Trump, not Obama, Responsible for Economy - “Obama might be justified in taking credit for today’s economy if his successor had adopted and carried on his policies. Instead, Trump has reversed nearly every Obama policy that he can overturn.” https://t.co/bRjlq3bKHb
A4. SS play the MOST important role. I poll them every trimester to find out how much they like my class, how much they think i like them, what can i change to make class better etc. Read this super quick piece wrote.https://t.co/xD5GrsM2JJ#satchat
A3: As an administrator, I think modelling self-reflection is key. Teachers also need to be given time to reflect together during PLCs and staff meetings. They also need time to observe one another teaching. #satchat
#satchat We have to give #students a voice in their own #learning! Create a Google form: What did you like about today's lesson? What was confusing, difficult, etc. It takes 5 minutes, and it makes such a difference!
A3. Right out of the gate what’s expected & gets inspected gets done. No, I don’t think reflection should be that rigid but if reflection & change is something a Staff views as culturally critical & something that is intended to cause growth then it should happen always #satchat
A4: This is where the magic happens! If S's are taught to self reflect, they take ownership of their learning and habits. It doesn't have to be a lengthy process. A quick "fingers 1 to 4, how do you feel about what you just did?" to make them think. #satchat
Q4 - This Q makes me reflect. They will learn most and best when they slow down and think for a minute... Think about their own mechanisms for figuring things out. What we can do that? #satchat
A4 By creating relationships with the students, they will share with you their thoughts. Like it or not, they are brutally honest. By giving them an opportunity to share with you about the lesson, it will allow you to see outside of the box easier. #satchat
A4: As a writing teacher - reflecting is such a huge part of the process. Metacognitive strategies help so much. Not just as a successful writer, but as a successful human...which is what we should really be going for! #satchat
A4 Self reflection should be a natural part of our classroom culture-what did I learn? How does this connect to the essential questions of this class? How does it connect to my learning overall? How can I improve? #satchat#metacognition
Q4: Asking students for periodic feedback on a lesson or unit is helpful. It shows S's that their input is valued, and gives you a different perspective. Easiest way: create a google form. #SatChat
A4: As with adults, children who routinely self-reflect are ones who can better own where they are and regulate where they are going. This is essential for students as they grow and learn...every day! #satchat
The motivation to succeed is what you give up when you commit to a victim-mentality.
You can’t be a winner at life, if you’re a loser in your own head.
A5: They are honest and will tell it like it is. Student surveys can give us information that is invaluable. After all, they are our target audience and what they experience in our rooms is key to our effectiveness. #satchat
A4) Students are huge piece of the puzzle the quality of a school is based off of student success. The success rate of the students allows admin to reflect on if teachers are a good fit and also what are we doing to create environment possible for teachers to teach! #satchat
A4: Asking students for periodic feedback on a lesson or unit is helpful. It shows S's that their input is valued, and gives you a different perspective. Easiest way: create a google form. #SatChat
A1. We need to be authentic self-reflective practitioners so that we can grow in our learning and adjust our work as we work with students and staff. #SatChat
a4) Ask Ss their thoughts on lessons; Use Disruptive Thinking questions @KyleneBeers What surprised you? What challenged, confirmed or changed your thinking--be specific? Add specific lesson questions--do on a quick Google Classroom question or @padlet#SatChat
#SatChat A4 For Ts to be reflective of their own practice they need to listen to and seek S feedback as to what worked & didn't. Every cohort id different & T needs to learn what works for them.
A4: Reflection is critical for student learning! NAEP test research found “inquiry without reflection as little to no impact on student understanding. Without reflection, inquiry is just a ‘fun’ activity” #satchat#stem
A4: Every good reflection needs a good mirror, which often reveals more than we expected to see. Ts and Ss can be that mirror for each other if we can create an open classroom culture for learning. #satchat#makeitreal
A4: Have Ss complete a reflection on the lesson, 3-2-1 fashion, that includes something they did not understand or how they think they might have learned it better. Use their ideas in the next lesson. They are the one learning; let them have some say. #satchat
A3: I think it’s so important for those of us that know why reflection ss important to share that why and intentionally model it when we are working collaboratively! #satchat
A4: When students see me reflecting & setting goals for myself, they make important connections to themselves as learners. They see that I’m still learning after all of these years! #satchat
A4 At the beginning of the school year, and throughout the year, ask your Ss, "How did we do with ____?" (Walking in line, synergizing during the hands on project, turning and talking, behaving in the lunchroom, etc.) #SatChat
A4: As with adults, children who routinely self-reflect are ones who can better own where they are and regulate where they are going. This is essential for students as they grow and learn...every day! #satchat
#satchat A4. I think just like us, time can be provided..Journal, what is reflection, and in a safe way, they can think abt their strengths and areas to improve, be better
A4 Hearing the student voice is important to knowing if something was truly effective. We might think it went great but they may see it differently. #satchat
A4: As teachers, we can ask students for feedback through simple questionnaires like Google or Microsoft Forms. Or students can answer questions using Flipgrid. Then we can use their feedback to improve our practice. #satchat
A4- Students become active in their own learning through intentional strategies to develop metacognition - journals, personal goal setting, student led conferences, self-reg #JohnHattie#satchat
I think Ss are underutilized in our reflection practices as educators. Ask Ss for honest feedback formally or informally. Our Ss are why we're here in the first place; their opinions should matter. As a bonus, it shows Ss the process and importance of reflection. #satchat
@chrisemdin talks about cogents. this is a very powerful idea. Everything we do should use critical pedagogy. That means we have to give up the power and listen to ss then make changes based on their feedback. it's not easy #SatChat
Our middle school students are more than happy to give free feedback to me! In our elementary classrooms, we build avenues for student feedback and teach them skills for giving and receiving feedback. The book #ThanksForTheFeedback is helping to frame my thinking on this #SatChat
This is so true! If we are not willing to listen to our students - early and often - then we are blind to areas where we can grow and improve. Listen -> Reflect -> Act -> Grow. #SatChat
A4: Be the teacher who values student voice and asks about their experience daily. If Ss don’t find our teaching meaningful & relevant...change must happen! #Satchat
A4. @PanoramaEd has a comprehensive set of surveys & reflection questions developed by the Harvard Graduate School of Education @hgse. Even if you don’t use their paid service, the depth & breadth of questions is incredible. I’ve collected data for 3 years. SO helpful! #satchat

Great reminder. I always start fairly strong giving Ss opportunities for this during terms 1 & 2. Somewhere during Term 2, things get super busy, practice gets lost. Goals for next yr! #satchat
3 Ways to Engage Students in The Reflection Process of Educators...
1. Periodically ask students directly what is and is not working in your classroom, school, or district
2. Administer a quick Google form survey to gain feedback
3. Hold a @Flipgrid Student Summit
#Satchat
A4 Students reflection should be one of the classroom routines built into any lesson. Certainly at the end of the lesson for the exit slip - reflect on what you have learned and what you still wonder about and wish to know more. #SatChat
We forget that assessment means to "sit beside" the student, not to stand in judgement. Student voice and agency is critical to building reflective culture of learning. #satchat
A4: All that students do, and who they are, drives educator reflection. In addition, student voices, in providing educators with their own reflections are essential to our own reflection. #satchat
re: Reflect with a purpose, so it's meaningful. We can reflect on our own or with students, administrators & colleagues. I use guiding questions. It's important to focus on the positive too. Reflection can celebrate successes along with promoting growth. #satchat > Solid advice!
A4: As with adults, children who routinely self-reflect are ones who can better own where they are and regulate where they are going. This is essential for students as they grow and learn...every day! #satchat
We forget that assessment means to "sit beside" the student, not to stand in judgement. Student voice and agency is critical to building reflective culture of learning. #satchat
A5 On the personal side, juggling job and home responsibilities, community involvement, kids' sports, and my own interests. Wanting to do it all made it challenging. Moving forward, I have to prioritize and get better at letting some stuff go. #satchat
A2: When facilitating the implementation of a new program or trying a new strategy in a school district, I bring T to visit another school that is using the same program/strategy to see it in action. They reflect & come away with so many new ideas about all CL aspects! #satchat
A5. As a pre-service T, reaching out to fellow Ts not just for our publication but for academic interaction as well, was quite challenging for us. We believe that we can help and support a lot of people through our platform, and we are always working in that direction! #satchat
A4: Involving Ss in reflection doesn’t have to be a formal process. Read their body language and level of engagement.
Ss tell us so much without saying anything! #Satchat
Important that students are giving opportunities for continuous and informal feedback. One survey at the end of the year is neither appropriate for student skill-building nor fair to the teacher #satchat
I would add “Why am I going?” The why is what makes learning personal and increases student engagement. When students are interested in what they are learning, they build deeper understandings. #SatChat#STEM4All
Kids have to feel safe enough to tell the teacher when something is not working ... not in some ticket out the door activity, but in the moment ... when it is happening ... that is when the information gained will be most productive. #satchat
A4 Responsive teaching & leadership is listening to the feedback the S’s provide and adjusting systems, lessons, assessments, etc. to meet their interests & needs. How do we know what to alter if we don’t ask? #satchat
A5: I started at a new school this year. While it overall went very well, challenge to balance new ideas in a new setting. Great learning experience! #satchat
To be a great educator you have to inspire and engage, which results in motivation and desire. If you can't do that get another job. #satchat#lovewhatudo#dowhatulove
#satchat A5 & 6 We are nearly at the end of T2, so not quite 1/2 way through the academic year in Australia. The challenge of a public discourse that seems to be negative towards T work, is always a challenge. Success happens in small ways each day.
A5 My biggest reflection this year was intentionality. After giving Ss an anony. survey to rate support, empathy, and guidance, I had a single response that made me reflect on the intentionality of all my actions all the time --especially in the area of student support. #satchat
True student reflection on the learning activity only happens when that relationship is there ... if not then you will not get maximum amount of honest feedback #satchat
A5: Informing the public of the upcoming referendum was a challenge.
Lessons learned:
1. Team work is essential. Awesome working w HTSD colleagues & community
2. People like info digitally and in person
3. Community needs/deserves to be informed about district happenings
#satchat
A4 My colleague @historyheintz writes about the impact of involving the students and making it the norm in his weekly blog series. Check it out here :) https://t.co/XYYx4KqIby#satchat
A5: Cutting out everything that was superfluous in my teaching. What Dr. Mike Schmoker calls Focus. Scary to go all in with the "depth over breadth" style of teaching but so worth it. #satchat
Speaking of reflection, I'm doing a session on Monday - Twitter for Teachers. If you don't mind taking a minute to add your thoughts to my @Flipgridhttps://t.co/p8sNfzVluc I'd appreciate it! We'll chat from 11:15-11:45 am EST using #TEACHin21stCentury Thanks! #satchat
Watched Mets & Reds at the same time last night. Some observations...
Something happened to the Mets when mgmt gave up on Matt Harvey
Harvey is learning to pitch all over again after injuries
Reds are more fun to watch than the Mets #satchat#SaturdayMorning
A5: Flexible seating was new for me this year. I’ve experienced more positive then negative results. However, Ss became territorial about certain spots and options. I’m looking into a choice board for next year and additional anchor charts. Modeling is key!! #satchat
A5: The hardest part in teaching is selecting what not to teach. So hard to prevent, and we don't necessarily get smarter… but hopefully more experienced #satchat
A5: Biggest challenge = writing a book while still being a full time teacher! 😬It was a challenge because I wanted to be sure it was a unique and pragmatic & not a rehash - what I call ed rah rah. Lots & lots & lots of reflection in that process! #satchat
A2 I like to find the place where I have time to reflect uninterrupted for 10 minutes. I feel the daily routine of reflection is important to the efficiency of self reflection! I have two young kids anyone want to guess where my reflection space is? GotTechED Episode 3 #satchat
Q5: My biggest challenge has been that I have been teaching six classes a day while also being an administrator. Going forward, I need less scheduled teaching time so that I can do a better job of being an instructional leader. #satchat
Teachers shouldn't be teaching students how to become victims. Nor should they be teaching their students how to put on a condom. Teachers shouldn't be wussifying our Students. #SatChat
A3. Time for reflection must be scheduled because there is never enough time to do everything that needs to be done. We use short meetings 2x a week & @Wunderlist to leverage time & communication with Technology! #SatChat
A5 Being directed by hire ups what is best for my students. They are not in the trenches, but want to play Monday Morning QB. I need to take the time to invite them to my classroom and when they have a hairbrain idea, give them the opportunity to show me how it works. #satchat
"This @GOP has spent the past 2 years trying to repeal the legacy of a strong, intelligent, popular black man—and don't seem to care how many Americans they drive to bankruptcy or despair,or how many they kill in the process."
https://t.co/ZhRoahobme#SaturdayMorning#SatChat
A5: Lack of accountability for Ss behavior has been a huge challenge and completely unsuccessful. It is hard to teach when they don’t come to class. #SatChat
A5) The number of needy students challenged me this year; often found Ss unmet social/emotional needs overshadowed academic possibilities for learning. Finding balance between helping Ss who were ready/able to learn and trying to help those who weren't there yet. #SatChat
A3 Admin can use strong listening strategies to help Ts reflect. Ask "why" questions: "why do you think that?" use questioning to push thinking "can you tell me more?" Listen quietly so Ts have time to think & process. #satchat
A5: The biggest challenge that I look to address in year 2 is to be in the classroom MUCH more than I was able to in year 1! That’s where the MOST important work in any school takes place. #satchat
A5. I looked over a lot of data this year and noticed my students above grade level didn’t have the growth as students on grade level or below grade level. Planning to do some PD on teaching this cohort of students this summer. “Better everyday on every way”. #satchat
A5) This year I had the chance to complete admin duties while still teaching. This gave me an opportunity to see the school from both lenses. This experience created a respect for each and understanding of how each position fits into the puzzle of a successful school. #satchat
#satchat A5. I was receiving some honest feedback, hard to take at times..and I really reflected on this. This feedback helped me grow, be better. It's not realistic to be great at everything
A5: I began writing a blog & it was difficult at first to put my thoughts into words that I wanted to share with the world. I felt vulnerable at first but the feedback has been great. #satchat PLN I’d love for you to read it & let me know what you think https://t.co/fX4PEF6Qgr
A5 Always a challenge....finding ways to build deeper relationships with Ss, tchrs, and parents. I used SeeSaw to build relationships with parents, tried to listen more to build relationships with tchrs, and took the time to listen to my Ss with a daily Morning Meeting. #SatChat
A5: My biggest challenge this year was 30 1st graders when I had been averaging 16! How could I individualize & make a difference? It took time & a ton of energy but I’m proud of what we accomplished. I still had 30 curious little kids at the end of the year! #satchat 😊
A5. Changing a culture that is so acclimated to sit-and-get, one-size-fits-all meetings can be super frustrating. But in an email age of self-directed learning, it makes little sense to use old pedagogy to inspire new innovation. #satchat
A5: The shift from classroom to instructional coach was huge. Alot of trial and error on how to meet teachers where they are & how to create a workflow. By clearly defining my role with Ts, it should setup for a great 2018-2019. #satchat
I know the feeling. Even though I dont have kids at home, grown and out of house and not on NJ. I usually have to travel to see kids and grands. School, home life, my doctoral program, professional orgs, hubby, keeping into of IT projects and info, my days are packed. #satchat
A5: One challenge was using technology as the avenue to meet the objective and not let the technology become the objective. Learning different platforms and finding a good fit for my teaching was difficult at times. Next year I want extend my network to learn new things #satchat

A5 Knowing how to balance my feelings on what a student can achieve and what their goals are. Also, knowing how to motivate them to reach goals they may not fully believe they can achieve. #satchat
A5: Working with a teacher that was not reflective about their teaching practices, they thought everything was fine. They were in the “Unaware” stage.(Hall & Simeral) #satchat
JW's court fight forced a release of 281 pages of emails Hillary Clinton sent & received over her unsecured non-state(dot)gov email system. These emails contain classified info and show collusion between the Clinton State Department & Clinton Foundation. https://t.co/nj95dnGv9J
A5 Biggest challenge this year was running a faculty committee on Friday afternoons. Too much conversation-format. I want to spice it up next year with more activities and hands-on meetings #SatChat
We need to be paying teachers a comfortable, living wage. No teacher should ever have to work two jobs to survive or worry about their students having the supplies they need to succeed. Teachers shape the character, caliber, and future of our children #SatChat
A5: After spending more time in the classroom, my next goal is to be a more faithful blogger. I think it is an effective way to reflect and to share views on leadership, priorities, values and vision. #satchat
This is a nice thought ... I still have to cover 400 years of US History and 122 standards ... in 181 days (minus all the testing/field trips/ school activity days) #satchat choosing what topic to dive deep with is not easy.
re: A4 self-reflect to grow and learn ... every day! #satchathttps://t.co/UWHMw81Q0O
> Reflection often prompts curiosity, which leads to discovery and potentially innovation or improvements (and additional questions). As you mentioned, kids AND adults. Lead by example! 👍
A5: Balancing behavior management and lesson in one particular class. It took some creative seating arrangements and relationship building, but it eventually evened out. #satchat
A5 When tier 1, 2, 3 interventions do not work, and they haven't worked the previous 4 years before they arrived in my grade level. So many different gaps to try to master, plus all of the new concepts too. #satchat
That moment when you get to tell your student’s mom (who recently was evicted and lost her job) that 155 strangers donated over $5,000 to help her and her 2 boys get back on their feet. Thank you to everyone who made this happen.
A5: Keeping focused on solving one problem at a time was a struggle at times... there’s a million things I haven’t done, but... #SatChat#Hamilton#STEM4All@Lin_Manuel
A5: It was challenging to manage the many tasks this year. I am learning to adapt to the many initiatives & the impact to my preferred way of working. I will delegate more #satchat
A5: Cutting out everything that was superfluous in my teaching. What Dr. Mike Schmoker calls Focus. Scary to go all in with the "depth over breadth" style of teaching but so worth it. #satchat
A6. Launching the publication and being able to work on a schedule for our readings and articles! We had a few hiccups along the way but organizing the content really worked for us. #satchat
Student relationships are always the biggest reward at the end of the year. They are what drive educators to reflect, challenge them to get better, and invest in professional learning and development. We do it for them. It should always be about them. #satchat#kidsdeserveit
A6 My biggest accomplishment this year has been getting my second book through the revision and editing process. Not easy to cut or change something you thought you did right the first time. Feedback from others and time to reflect was essential #satchat
A5: My most rewarding challenge this year...returning to the classroom after 16 years in district roles and entering Kindergarten for the first time in 28 years. 😊 #satchat
many teachers do not want to hear the truth from kids ... kids also have a rough time with giving feedback in a "professional" manner ... "This is dumb" comments have to engaged and analyzed ... responded with "What was dumb about it" #satchat
A6: Prioritizing communication and building relationships went well for me this year. They were the building blocks for building new partnerships & ideas #satchat
A6: Ignoring most of the standards and having students read, write, and talk and argue every single day. No multiple choice tests, and a ton of growth at the end of the year #satchat
A8) Using technology to help make student thinking visible went really well this year; I get better with it every year. When Ss did genius hour, I loved how they turned to some of the tech tools we had used in class to share their learning. #satchat
#satchat A^ Success for this year was connecting with those colleagues who really care about #students, #learning, and a strong sense of support for educators. Maintaining those relationships is critical.
A5 My biggest challenge was taking on a full time subbing position for 4 & 1/2 months while still doing my admin job. I wouldn't have survived without my great team, but my exercise routine went out the window & it's hard to get back on track #satchat
A5:My challenge this year was defining my role at a new school. I struggled balancing what the staff & students needed & not blurring the lines of other positions. Next year, I hope to work collaboratively with our new admin & outline my position & goals with the staff. #satchat
A6: The projects we did this year, culminating in the best one we had done as a school (https://t.co/GEjWIu4J0N). Why? To a large extent, because of frequent REFLECTION - with students! - on what worked, what didn’t, & what action is needed to get better. #satchat@tcechs
A6 I polled my ss and asked how much they thought i liked them. one gave me a 1 our of 5. i met with him. we talked. i changed my behavior. he wrote me a letter at the end of the year telling me how much he loved my class. #winning#satchat
A6: As a principal, it’s my job to find the best talent to bring to my school. I so proud of the group we brought on this year & excited about the group that will join us next year! It’s a process that you have to invest in! #satchat
I survey the kids so often that people start to ask why I care what they think. If mid-lesson, a kid says something isn't working for them, I want to act on it and make it better. #SatChat
A6 Restorative practices. Having meaningful conversations with students and restorative language and circles. When students do the reflecting it makes connections better. #SatChat
it is not impossible ... my standards are basically the same core standards repeated to match content being taught ... #satchat "How did different cultures respond to ____"
#satchat#MAGA#Narcissist
If DT lost all trappings he views as proof of his self-worth: $$, planes, buildings;
Forced to live on $36K/yr/allowance &
No additional income over min wage;
His reaction would result in him >
I left my comfort zone & tried some things I had been nervous to try— like Socratic seminars! Not near as many awkward silences as I was expecting. Success! 😉 #satchat#READ5305
A6 In math, creating high floor, higher ceiling activities for the Ss. This keeps my lecturing to a minimum and keeps them engaged with critical thinking to solve the problem. This also gives me the opportunity for the students to walk me through where they are stuck. #satchat
Coach Removes Chairs From Team Who Disrespected The National Anthem And Gives Them To Veterans-EPIC!
[VIDEO] One of the most powerful videos you will see about a coach who teaches his players a lesson abt showing respect to our anthem & nations heroes.

A6: Once a week, I led off class by sharing a non-curriculum-related story from my life, and what it taught me (about excellence, leadership, sacrifice, etc.). Not only did it force self-reflection, it helped me come across as more relatable and approachable to students. #satchat
I think about this every time I see you on Twitter and am so impressed that you have jumped into this with such enthusiasm and joy. Very inspiring. #satchat
A6 - I dug into the 5 E method of teaching for Social Studies... with other Ts looking over my shoulder skeptically. And it worked really well. #satchat
A6: Mystery skypes and mystery number!! Great resources were available to help me implement, and I'm grateful for innovative Ts willing to help our class connect across the US. Next stop, another country! #satchat
A6: I did a one on one intervention with a young emerging reader daily for 30 minutes. We sat side by side & shared so much thinking, joy, literature, & learning. We looked forward to it & she was upset if anything interfered with our time! #satchat
A6: Addressing issues of race and gender inequality stopped class and led to insightful and meaningful conversations that no one had ever had with my Ss. I strongly believe the honest discussion allowed them to reflect on other people’s perspectives #SatChat
A5. The greatest challenge each year is staying positive in the world of education while taking the road less traveled! Reflection, attitude, collaboration, and culture are critical. Thank you teachers for not giving up, it’s worth it! #Satchat
Just got some funding to work on BOTH of those topics next year - Genius Hour with an elementary teacher's class and making thinking visible with our faculty. Any advice?? #SatChat
A6: Created authentic audience for my S writers. Knowing Ss had a purpose made them motivated to write, revise, and create their best. Using technology to reach a more authentic audience wa powerful #satchat
A6: I really worked on improving staff morale this year. We played whole-staff BINGO, added an inspirational welcome board to the front entrance of the school, a Shout-Out board to the staff room, and staff shout-outs to our monthly staff meetings. #satchat
A6: I joined twitter, began participating in chats which has allowed me to expand my PLN & connect with educators around the world. I’ve begun reading @dbc_inc books & my teaching & mindset is evolving right before my eyes! This is Year 19 for me & I’m still growing! #satchat
#satchat A6. I think seeing kids outside the school setting and seeing their interests/passions..concerts, chorus, inductions, being honored..I learned even more abt them and was so honored when they asked me to attend
I have no formal survey ... kids participate in learning activity and I circulate around the room answering questions ... dropping new directions for kids who need it ... it is during these conversations that kids actually talk to me and give feedback without knowing #satchat
re: A5: Keeping focused on solving one problem at a time was a struggle at times... there’s a million things I haven’t done, but... #SatChat#Hamilton#STEM4All
> Reminds me of the point about moving a mountain one stone at a time! 👍
A6. Upped my #gamification approach to a fully gamified classroom this year. Comprehensive year-long narrative with player avatars, leaderboards, team competitions, optional side quests, and 50+ games. https://t.co/evRhdLPb1U#satchat (much love to @mrmatera@MrPowley). AMAZING.
A6: My weekly work with @bachandblack was the most rewarding as they were brave enough to transform learning in their class. This tweet from a couple days ago helped confirm the excitement for learning they generated, and I was lucky to be part of it. #satchat
I have read it maybe 10 times. I know no better book on improving student learning. It takes courage to do what he says, but we owe it to our students! #satchat
Wow! That was an awesome #satchat conversation.
Thank you PLN for another engaging morning and to @HeatherLieberm2 for guest moderating.
Next week's convo is with @drvince65@mmingle1
See image for info.
Next week is the last regular #satchat before Summer of #satchat hours
A6 Coaches & I worked to improve our skills. We did a book study of The Art of Coaching & it has been great. We took time to absorb the info, practice our listening skills, & reflect on our wins & our challenges. It had a positive impact on us & all our Ts #SatChat
We also need to teach them that there ARE appropriate ways to challenge things they disagree with. Instead of "listen to the teacher", we should be teaching them to communicate with the teacher. #satchat
A6 I polled my ss and asked how much they thought i liked them. one gave me a 1 our of 5. i met with him. we talked. i changed my behavior. he wrote me a letter at the end of the year telling me how much he loved my class. #winning#satchat
FREE! FREE! FREE! Everybody likes something FREE! Keep watching, we will soon have an opportunity for hundreds of you to download What REALLY Happened absolutely FREE! Good Saturday morning! https://t.co/WKzHnSWbUo#satchat#freebook
A6 I got to co-teach in more classes this year. Supporting international collaborations whilst teaching information literacy. Was given access to reading levels that demonstrated I made a difference #satchat
#satchat
shoutout to alll the weekend warriors out here getting this money...we will sleep when we are dead...until then lets get this money and stay motivated!
Sometimes, i think teachers get all offended by the manner in which a student delivers feedback, and the conversation turns into correcting tone/behavior instead of accepting the feedback #satchat
If Monday is seen as the day that begins the work life, I see Saturday as the day I can spend time in designing the vision of my startup. #satchat#startup
A6: Ts and admin that support risk taking and embrace change. I worked with an amazing group of Ts on our iTeam- their energy and passion inspired me. #satchat#bermpride
A6: I love our student pep rallies! At first, it wasn't universally well received. So, I asked for feedback from the staff & made changes. I communicated the focus of celebrating our students & maintained high enthusiasm. Now, the staff & students look forward to it! #satchat
I wrote about it here. Is a quick read. Polling the kids doesn't take money or much effort. We should take the pulse of the people we serve and make changes based on that. wish admin would do that for ts as well. ask those without power what needs to be changed. #satchat
A1: Reflection enables an educator to examine, introspect, and modify their own teaching methods and behavior at runtime in order to effectively adapt and achieve meaningful results. #satchat
Happiness is a habit.
A6- I am really proud of working with a group of rockstar Ts to build in a set of rigorous inquiry-based math lessons into our k-5 curriculum. It’s all about building capacity!!!
#teacherleaders#HTSDpride#satchat
Q1: Why is it important for educators to self reflect?
A1: It's important for educators to self reflect so we can always be improving. If we didn't self reflect, we just be doing the same old thing, successful or not. Students deserve better. You deserve better.
#satchat
Isaiah 54:17
'no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed,
and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me,
declares the Lord.'
#Jesus#SaturdayMorning#satchat
A6: I became a Google Certified Trainer and will switch jobs for next year. As an Instructional Coach at the school where one of my kids goes,I feel like I can make more of a difference! I'll be able to mix my love of instruction & technology everyday! #satchat
Wow, #satchat was exactly what I needed to recharge this morning. Self reflection is such an important thing to talk about not only for educators, but also for students. We can and we will do our best for ourselves, our buildings, our culture, and most importantly our students.
