Perhaps we should use formative assessment as a tool to help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work. Therefore no grade needed. #edchat
no, no, no! Formative assessment should not be graded. It should provide Ss with descriptive feedback based on the learning goal and success criteria and then Ss identify next steps/goals/resources needed in order to improve #edchat
Here is today's #Edchat Topic: If the purpose of formative assessment is to provide teacher and student feedback on progress, is it fair to assign grades to it? Are there alternatives?
#edchat In some of our schools formative assessment grades are constantly replaced each time they go through a re-teach and re-take. If they master info, grades are changed.

True, but parents find it hard to understand what we’re doing by replacing grades. We need to do better at educating our parents about grading practices. #edchat

assessments need to be skill based not content based - e.g., justifying in mathematics. What are the success criteria for justification? Feedback should be based on that. #edchat
I'll start. Numeric grading can absolutely be modified to reflect growth in formative assessment. By setting up benchmarks for students to reach, even if students reach them at different times, it can work. #edchat
HW/Classwork is NOT a formative assessment ... it is the activity that is building knowledge ... the formative is going around and checking if they understand #edchat
About 20 years ago, a group of dedicated teachers and I tried our best to develop something like what his system shares. When Standards were new and we wanted a "Standards based Report Card" #edchat

For me, personally, this is in the low end.

Hey #edchat peeps help me here... in my training i learned that Formative Assessment includes formal and informal assessment procedures by teachers during the learning process for the purpose of improving student attainment. Is that what you learned too? @tomwhitby@sgthomas1973
What is the ROLE OF THE STUDENT in the formative assessment process? Shouldn't a student and teacher be partners in learning? Each making the other better...? #edchat
I think a great alternative to grading formative assessments is for the Ss to be involved in the assessment of their own learning. This promotes reflection and metacognition. #edchat

Why do students have to get so camera shy in the classroom all of a sudden? It's usually the same ones I see selfieing it up in their free moments. #edchat

Formative assessments should guide teacher and students about learning progress and gaps in understanding. Ss should use verbal and written formative assessments as part of final self evaluation #edchat
WELCOME to #edchat Topic: If the purpose of formative assessment is to provide teacher and student feedback on progress, is it fair to assign grades to it? Are there alternatives?
IF we believe formative assessment is so important then WHY AREN'T WE rolling-up data from formative assessment to
departments and schools so they can better support teaching and learning? #edchat
Tonight’s #Edchat Topic: If the purpose of formative assessment is to provide teacher and student feedback on progress, is it fair to assign grades to it? Are there alternatives?
The ‘setup right’ part of this is the critical part. I think we should talk more about the ‘how do we get there from here’ part of student driven systems like this. And yes, I’ve seen this be very powerful for souring real reflection #edchat
Sometimes I wonder if it encourages students to lie. We have a “competition” at our local library and I often wonder how many of the books were really read. We need to create excitement without competition #newselachat#edchat#edtech#reading
"Shouldn't a student and teacher be partners in learning?" <-- Wouldn't this be a monumental shift in the way most teachers were taught? Don't they model what was shown to them? How long will it take for this shift to take place? #edchat

I believe strongly in ss self assessing, especially verbally. I work with ED kiddos who need to verbalize social interactions before they make them at times. Formative assessments here may be a series of questions talking through what has worked and not. #edchat
Stay in contact. Share good books. We have a google spreadsheet where teachers leave book reviews of children’s lot. And we share it with parents...if you liked this...then you’ll love this. #newselachat#edchat
Q3:
How can educators promote the benefits of student summer reading to parents, caregivers, and communities? How can we get them involved? #NewselaChat
Families come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing they all have in common is love ❤️. The True Adventures of Esther the Wonder Pig is listed on Scholastic Teacher’s 50 Magical Books For Summer. 🏳️🌈🐽 #edchat@ScholasticTeach@EstherThePighttps://t.co/UFz8djok9g
I remember a conversation with a teacher who had page after page of grades. I asked him to please stop recording the students' practice, sit and talk with them about their learning instead. His face was in TOTAL shock! #edchat
IF everyone understands and utilizes formative assessment in their teaching, THEN why are teaching, classrooms and schools so unchanged over time? #edchat
Awesome! When these habits start early they can be truly powerful later on. As long as the higher grades are prepared to build on them of course... #edchat
IF everyone understands and utilizes formative assessment in their teaching, THEN why are teaching, classrooms and schools so unchanged over time? #edchat
I am going to try and do student mini conferences twice a month next year. Could be wishful thinking, but I think it will help us be more goal oriented. Even if we both sit and just visit about goals I think we'll be better for it. #edchat
True. I have worked with students unfairly hit by teachers with only 3-4 grades for a whole quarter. But completion driven grade inflation just promotes cultures of compliance. #edchat
I suppose the confusion is - what's formative about it? Is someone saying its formative because it's mid-unit or because it's informing instruction? Is it a true assessment or is it a task? #edchat
I tell the students things we really need to focus on. Goals and standards. We can decide how we'll get there together. #edchat. I also ask a ton of questions to get them thinking.
But, like someone else said, you are preaching to the choir. Not everyone believes in formative assessment. It is easier to give grades and call it a student earning or not earning the grade. #edchat
“We ask them (students) to ask critical questions in the classroom but not in society.” @DrTPM talking about risk eversion in education. Could not be more on point. #Edchat cc: @ProgramsUACS
IF we believe formative assessment is so important then WHY AREN'T WE rolling-up data from formative assessment to
departments and schools so they can better support teaching and learning? #edchat
I use a product called @goformative for my formative assessments to get instantaneous feedback about student understanding. See how I do it. Summative assessment tella me whether Ss retained information. Also important. #edchathttps://t.co/onbQDafQY3

I love this! I do a pd built on a very similar idea. This also makes feedback actually useful for students and grounds the feedback in actual skills as opposed to just saying ‘work harder’ next time #edchat

In the formative assessment process what would happen if
students shared formative assessment with each other?
Each making the other better...? #edchat
This makes no sense to me....if something was not going to change would it not be summative? Though I firmly believe all should be able to change #edchat
In order for Formative Assessment to be beneficial it has to be done CONSISTENTLY and the data be used not just to understand where students are in their learning but inform the teacher of their teaching and drive change. #edchat
If a teacher uses quizzes as formative assessment to assess the success of the lessons with students aren't the grades abt the lessons' success/failure & not the students. #Edchat

Sure Formative Assessment can be fun, but if we are only using the “fun” #edtech because it drives engagement we have to step back and see is it truly effective? How is the data used to improve learning or instruction? #edchat
Research tells us that formative assessment is more than just random quizzes here and there. It is constant conversation and feedback between the student and the teacher. #edchat
I think it is the craziest thing, too. Kid gets a low formative grade, you reteach, reassess, change formative grade. Instead, we keep formative, "reteach?", give summative. Get bad grade, "reteach?" reassess the summative... #Edchat
the big question is ... how did they get slammed by 3 -4 grades ? Was the teacher using formatives to ensure the kids were understanding ... #edchat good use of formatives can help improve grades
Sharing formative assessment amongst peers transforms a classroom into a collaboration with a growth mindset. It allows for group learning and independence of discovery. Research shows this promotes critical thinking and retention. #edchat

Formative assessments I use that are NOT quizzes...whiteboarding, lab analysis, lots of tech with Socrative, Quizlet, Nearpod, Mentimeter, gallery walks. Who has others? #edchat
77.6 percent of children ages 8 to 16 said they enjoy reading very much, however those aged 14 to 16 said that only 43.8 percent enjoy reading now. #elemchat#edchathttps://t.co/MHQy7rsAw4
I am in a perpetual state of questioning ... looping back to help some ... pushing others deeper into their learning ... formatives help me know which way to go #edchat
I wrote about close reading today on @UnleashReaders because I think this best practice has gotten a pretty bad rap primarily because of misconceptions. Today I shared a secret about close reading: https://t.co/VLBUUrHWkz#edchat#Education
Our pupils forget most of what we teach them. They will however remember us their teachers forever.Lets be good and kind to them.A kind word can last a lifetime #Edchat
Students can use the info to clarify understanding and teachers to re-teacher as needed. Grades are not the point. Still trying to quit grades and replace with reflection on learning. Tough sell! #edchat
If a teacher uses quizzes as formative assessment to assess the success of the lessons with students aren't the grades abt the lessons' success/failure & not the students. #Edchat
They also don’t lose the skills they develop. Another reason to rethink assessment to be more about skills applied and less on content fluency. #edchat

Ever ask yourself, how many of my colleagues really understand the relationship of grades to formative assessment, or how many can define formative assessment? #Edchat
I make my students design and create their own language goals and collect evidence from in class AND out of class to show how they reached their goals. It helps me make better lessons. #edchat

Yes, and pathfinding (pathmaking?) will be collaborative and take student preferences into account. Learning will blend smoothly into life outside the classroom, and new tools will help align goals and actions. #edtech#edchat#flipclass#flippedlearning#pbl
I think nothing but positives would come out of it, but a lot of "positives" get pushed back behind the "gotta get this covered--no time for anything else" time crunch Ts feel. #Edchat

Thanks @bhstyson...so, when was the last time you were part of a PL-team"? Did it have even a remote capacity for taking on something like this? Doubtful... #edchat
