The goal of #wvedchat is to provide educators an opportunity to connect, share, and learn from others by engaging in conversations around issues and topics in education.
For tonight's chat about Coding in Education, please use A1, A2 when answering questions. Don't forget to use #WVEdChat in your tweets!
Here we go #WVEdChat
A1 YES YES YES! Students need to understand how things work and problem solve when things go wrong! Instead of pushing the home button or opening an App, find out how it was made! #WVEdChat
A1: Learning to code pushes them to problem solve. It all goes back to my favorite fortune cookie. "Failure is feedback. And feedback is the breakfast of champions." #WVEdChat
A1: Absolutely! Coding is a universal language in which every country is fluent. It opens global doors for WV’s workforce & economic development. Exposing our youth & sparking their interest is the first step. #WVEdChat
A1: While every student might not grow up to be a computer scientist, the skills behind CS (failure, perseverance, problem solving, pattern recognition) are invaluable and complement any existing curricula! #WVEdChat
I am currently working with Kindergarten and coding. We are using Code and Go Robot Mouse. Easy coding hands on activity for the little guys. #WVEdChat
A2 being a adult ed is a little different because don't have students extended time but do Hour of Code, have robots and ozobots to use #wvedchat gives them a glimpse and helps employability skills in problem solving and critical thinking
A2: #WVEdChat Implemented in several classrooms, linked it to communication standards. Ss had to use #flipgrid and #GoogleClassroom to discuss problems and offer feedback. It was fantastic!
A2: PD is one of our expertise areas - we’re working on programs to implement CS, coding, and related skills into any curriculum! It works particularly well in STEM subjects. #WVEdChat
A2: I don't teach it specifically. Across district we use Scratch, Ozobots, unplugged games, Codecademy, Alice, and the HS kids have other programs. #wvedchat
Most of the time I do coding things w/ Hour of Code and then use the apps like Tynker as free time or indoor recess activities that students LOVE #WVEdChat
A2 I've used hour of code and students really like it. Also ST Math is a problem solving math app our county uses which makes students think through the problems without any directions. #WVEdChat
A2) Instead of implementing it in our classroom, we are trying to bring it into yours K-12! We are offering @codeorg’s Professional Learning Programs FREE to WV teachers! #WVEdChat
A2) Instead of implementing it in our classroom, we are trying to bring it into yours K-12! We are offering @codeorg’s Professional Learning Programs FREE to WV teachers! #WVEdChat
A2: We started with #HourofCode to show whats possible with code. Currently implementing #codeorg curriculum in Tech Lab as well as #CodeLikeAGirl Club! Next year school has committed to every classroom! #WVEdChat
what about re-creating coding problems on a large scale Ss have cards to use and one Ss becomes the robot to do the activity and see if it works @justin_brubeck#wvedchat
A2: I have helped teachers implement tynker, scratch jr., https://t.co/sI3QYCFBlZ, and hour of code activities. It helps with problem solving and develop direction following skills. #wvedchat
We did Hour of Code, and teachers discovered some new coding apps. Students have continued coding since in some of our classes! It was a great jumpstart! #WVEdChat
A3 Ts thinking they need to be experts in computers. Often times I have Ss solve problems I don't know with iPads etc. Let Ss be the experts! #WVEdChat
A3: teachers have too many other constraints for me to worry is they are writing code with their students. I handle that in either media class, pbl, or interest group/inquiry time #WVEdChat
A3 Ts are afraid to fail in front of Ss so they are afraid to try but if we can't model learning from failure, how do we expect Ss to learn that skill #wvedchat
A3: The road block they put up, a lack of confidence that they can teach coding. Just go on the adventure and trust that your Ss will help you. They will! #WVEdChat
A3: Lack of time to implement, lack of understanding of tech, school culture, fixed mindsets. All can be solved with customized PD tailored to meet teachers where they are. #WVEdChat
A2: We started with #HourofCode to show whats possible with code. Currently implementing #codeorg curriculum in Tech Lab as well as #CodeLikeAGirl Club! Next year school has committed to every classroom! #WVEdChat
What I love about @codeorg curriculum is that the teacher is called the "Lead Learner." I may not know it all but I'm sure gonna try and figure it out! #WVEdChat
A3 - Teachers are SCARED! Coding is the super foreign language that wouldn't dare travel alone! It takes some hand holding and letting them know that it's not that scary and their kids can do it. We learn together! #WVEdChat
#wvedchat#preach! Yes! When I first started I wasn't sure if what I was doing was right or wrong. I think with anything you just have to #divein and try it out! #failforward
A3: It's a very new subject for Ts, especially those who aren't comfortable with tech. They don't want to fail or be way out of comfort zones #wvedchat
A3: Also - lack of reliable internet. Our computer science programs/lessons integrate coding concepts into hands-on learning opportunities so you don’t even NEED a computer! #WVEdChat
A3: Not having enough devices available and fear of not knowing how. Students can teach the teachers how to do it. I had my 5 year daughter come in and help me teach a class on scratch jr. to teachers. Showing them it's okay to let the students play and figure it out. #wvedchat
A3 Ts thinking they need to be experts in computers. Often times I have Ss solve problems I don't know with iPads etc. Let Ss be the experts! #WVEdChat
A3) Anxiety/discomfort about ability to teach CS, hesitancy to try new ways of teaching, thinking CS content is too basic, and skepticism about CS education models #WVEdChat
Sounds good! We'll chat sometime. I've also known your dad and brother for years! Mikey was just excited when I told him you were in the chat too. #WVEdChat
I do not teach coding with any curriculum. I show the kids what the blocks do, give a general overview and then get out of their way. #lessusmorethem#WVEdChat
A3.2) Provide an environment where questions are welcome and risks are encouraged, recognize and appreciate teachers, and provide relevant implementation examples #WVEdChat
A4: @codeorg is my go to! The curriculum is FANTASTIC and FREE! I love how the lessons build fundamentals, allow the kids to be creative and encourage students to work together. #WVEdChat
A4: Scratch, Tynker, I'm #oldschool and used #basic back in the day. Even have decent knowledge of HTML and have done some basic programming in PHP for my website several years ago. #WVEdChat
Yes it is! Even for those of us in #EdTech roles! Taking inspiration from you and a few others, I started blogging about my experience teaching code & learning it at the same time! #wvedchat
#WVEdChat Becky, 5th grade math/science teacher, Hampshire County WV, and probably this Talk Boy, but man when those skip proof portable CD players came out, I was on cloud 9 ...
A3 - Teachers are SCARED! Coding is the super foreign language that wouldn't dare travel alone! It takes some hand holding and letting them know that it's not that scary and their kids can do it. We learn together! #WVEdChat
A4: use different platforms for different projects or students pick. Littlebits are cool but fragile, we use beebots and probots, scratch, turtleart, turtleblocks, snap. We will be working with arduino, hummingburds, and lilypads #WVEdChat
A4: #wvedchat I want YOU to try out the https://t.co/SEnfcJxDfR curriculum! Check it out :) You won't be disappointed! Works on all platforms, interactive, custom to specific learners and classes and did I mention it's FUN! #keepcalmandcodeon
#WVEdChat Q2: I believe the only coding I’ve used in my classroom is the LEGO WeDo 2.0, and we’ve been able to align it with various science standards. I’m so out of the coding loop, and would like to learn more ...
A5: #DigCit has just as big of a role in coding as it does in student research. #Plagiarism and intellectual theft can happen in coding just like in writing! #WVEdChat
A4 - https://t.co/6Uu0DiRBxf has a fantastic FREE, all spelled out curriculum. Go to the training, get the book or do the digital resources and you're set! Won't be disappointed. @codeorg#WVEdChat
A5: we dont do tradtional digital citizen stuff. 3 rules always apply. Take care of yourself, take care of each other take care of the space aka online. Be kind and dont steal. Safety is under take care of self #WVEdChat
Coming in late:
Q3: Many road blocks educators face in coding are due to fear of not knowing how to code, or how it fits into the curriculum. It’s our job as a TIS to facilitate learning experiences for our Ts, provide support & showcase relevance. #WVEdChat
A5) Knowing the difference between private information and personal information, and distinguishing what is safe and unsafe to share online is just part of the complete CS Education package #WVEdChat
#WVEdChat Q2: We’ve worked with a sphero ball too, but mostly during down town to learn how to use it - I never ended up using it in class in anyway ... I’d love ideas on how to.
A5: #WVEdChat The important thing about #digcit is that we don't just teach it once and move on. It's built into EVERYTHING we do with technology from E-mail to #coding. Modeling for our students what that looks like is #critical.
Trying to catch up! :)
A4: I LOVE @cospaces_edu ! Using it in grades 3-5. It provides the freedom for creation in VR, storytelling, task design, and student can choose to code in either Blocky/Java. #WVEdChat
A6: #WVEdChat Baby Steps! Get your feet wet and try out something you feel comfortable with. Only then will you continue to grow as an educator. #breakthebarrier and go outside the box!
A6: Advice for teachers and students to take it slow, read everything. Don't be afraid to try. Don't be afraid to fail. Don't be afraid to fail in front of another. Just keep swimming. #WVEdChat
A6: We, as educators, have to prepare students for a world that does not yet exist and that we cannot even imagine. Coding is a tool to do so. Let them build the future themselves & give them the mindsets to support that. #WVEdChat
A6) Anybody can learn whether you are a student or a teacher! Just start with the ABCs and 123s of computer science just like any other field. PERSEVERE! You might make mistakes, but that’s how one learns #WVEdChat
