The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
I was in a school with SSR. Principal was big supporter. Would not allow staff or office to do anything during SSR except read. It was that strong in the culture #bfc530
I like it. My S’s say they hate reading, I say you just hate WHAT you’re reading. I encourage my S’s to read something, especially comic books. Need ideas ? Follow @historycomics#bfc530
I think any time we give to students to read is a good thing. Like adult readers, sometimes reading can be tied to reflection or response, sometimes it is just reading for reading's sake. A daily commute vs a Sunday drive. #bfc530
What percentage of students actually participate in SSR at home? This is why SSR is important in school, in order to help build this habit into students' lives. #bfc530
Oh gosh! My goal this year - 10 minutes, every day. NOTHING will stop it. Well, lots has interrupted it. I need time! BUT! It has set a stage for reading-those halfway towards his:her goal have a celebration lunch with me today! I MUST refocus next semester #BFC530
For me it’s about instilling a love of reading. We have to help Ss find books they love and make sure they don’t view reading as a time filler or punishment. Talk with Ss about books and make reading joyful. #bfc530
I think kids should be given time to read materials of their choice during the school day. With so many choices for reading, ebooks, books, audiobooks, every kid should be able to find what works for him/her. #bfc530
We treat our independent reading time as precious. It's a non-negotiable- even on hectic special days, we make sure we preserve our reading routine. Sometimes it's the only calm in our days and I think our Ss deserve that. They will only value it if I do. #bfc530
In ages past those who read silently were suspect. Who knew what they were thinking. Today "homeroom" is converted to sustained silent reading. Read on. Let 'em guess. #bfc530
I try to begin each school day with ten minute of silent, personal reading.
Does anyone know of a successful high school, school-wide SSR program?
#bfc530
I think SSR is different from independent reading or at least the way I do it. During SSR I read too. During indepdent reading I meet with kids #tcrwp#bfc530
The more you read the better you become, I think SSR is an excellent use of time and we should do it more often. I teach HS science and it is something a rarely ask from my students, how could i work it into my curriculum? #BFC530
I get quiet reading ... but forcing a kid to read for “x” number of minutes when it fits into our schedule may not be the best way. ... especially if what they are reading is not good #bfc530
Pt. 2: as far as the silence goes, I would rather have a hum in the room. I would like to see kids reading and would also like to see and/or overhear kids talking about what they are reading. Or reading together. Complete silence is overrated. #bfc530
Thanks for this Kathy- I guess what I do is more on the independent reading side- we don't call it SSR- some days I read too, some days I confer with Ss #bfc530
Sustained reading is vital. It teaches a habit for a skill they will always need and allows them to build the foundational blocks of wisdom. I should allow more time for it in my classroom (History is definitely a reading intensive subject) #bfc530
I like it, but as a math teacher I find it hard as I am not totally equipped with the strategies of a reading teacher. I model that the time is important by reading myself, but I know many kids are still “fake reading.” #bfc530

Also: if you liked XXXX, then you should check out YYY, ZZZZ, and JJJJJ.
I don't see kids browsing bookstores. Heck, we don't even see many bookstores anymore.

Quite honestly ... what kid is going to enjoy reading at school “sit down at your desk and read for ten minutes” ... “yes, that hard wooden library chair is where you sit” ...enjoy reading because I said so. #bfc530
So true. I loved going to book stores as a kid and my wife wont go with me to one now because she knows how easy it is for me to get lost in one. My kids, they go to Barnes and Noble with me to look at the toys #bfc530
I think it feels less like "forcing" when students have choice in what they read, especially when there is a culture of reading in the school that promotes reading as enjoyable and shows students that reading is something everyone chooses to do. #bfc530
People read everywhere, comfy chair or standing on the subway. Anything presented as a command isn't going to sound inviting. How about, "We only have ten minutes, let's all pull out our books and get back into the stories we've been reading!" #bfc530
The thing about #bfc530 that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
While we're talking reading, I am super excited to have Cross Country selected as one of Barnes and Noble's 20 Favorite Indie Books of 2018. #bfc530https://t.co/6mTItWKhtf
I'm reading my way through the Raven Cycle again. Haven't read The Raven King yet, but I keep restarting at book one, telling myself I need to read all four one right after the other. #bfc530
I also think we need to have alternative reading choices ... how many kids would rather read a periodical ... books are not the only reading choices available. #bfc530
Choice/SSR is so important ... but can become ‘fake’ reading. Book talks go a long way. How and where to fit in MS or HS schedule is a challenge. #bfc530
We are. I don't mind the tech/making as long as we can connect it back to research/literature and students use those skills as a making foundation. #bfc530
I’m not exactly sure if this is a mandated time where everyone in the school reads. Personally, I would love 15 minutes either at the beginning or end of the day where my job was to promote learning by modeling my reading! I actually could finish those PD books! #bfc530
