Intros: Welcome to #waledchat! Introduce yourself, where you are from, your role in education, and tag someone who you'd like to see join you here tonight! #waledchat
Hello. My name is Susan, and I am a student teacher from IL planning to write a book thanks to inspiration from @LaurenPorosoff. A member of my PLN mentioned my book should be called "New Teacher Twitter Tribe". #waledchat
A1: I’m creative in everything I do. In how I use my timez in how I present the curriculum. In how I interact with the ss. If I can’t be creative, I get crabby! #waledchat
A1: I would like to say my biggest strength is caring. I try to go out of my way to care and build those relationships with my students. As a student teacher, it is important to capitalize on my strengths while also working to improve my weaknesses. #waledchat
A2: I use my humor to build relationships with students and calm down what could be some potentially feisty situations. Laughter is the best medicine after all! #waledchat
A2 Creating a curriculum means bringing together elements from across disciplines and fitting these elements together into a coherent, purposeful unit. It means being creative about what to include and judicious about what to let go. #waledchat
A2: Patience helps when I’m dealing with students in my office. I take the time to hear them out so I can really understand what makes them who they are, and in certain cases, what made them do what they did! #waledchat
A2: BELIEF has a profound impact on all people, not just Ss, to know and be told someone truly believes in you. They don't care about the past or failures, they believe in the amazingly unique you!
#waledchat
A2: They’re kids; they’re going to make mistakes and do things that may not always be right, but they’re learning and growing. I have to support and guide them to become the best they can be. #waledchat
A2: I make myself available to help with math content, social and emotional things, as often as I can. I have to let them know that I am one of their biggest supporters, and for some, maybe their only one. #waledchat
A2: Perseverance allows me to keep going for my students...and for me too! I've taught in a lot of schools & started from scratch way too many times, but each time I've grown & morphed as a better T for my Ss. #waledchat
A2 I keep trying to make my instruction better. I keep learning and studying. I admit when something didn’t go right and we try again. Even after 20 years there is always something I can do better or differently #waledchat
A2: Being willing to bail on somethingwhen you identify it isn’t working and trying something new on the fly has paid off huge for my Ss. Shows my “failure” and enforces growth mindset. #waledchat
A2 I don't give up on them EVER! They realize it is easier to just do their best, than have me after them. I'm like the SNL Spartan Cheerleaders if necessary #waledchat
A2: Trust goes both ways. They have to be able to trust us if they are going to take a risk. At the same time, I trust/believe in them, knowing that they are capable of doing great things and changing the world. #waledchat
Hey all! I'm Nicole, a new teacher from Ann Arbor, MI. At the moment, I'm getting lots of experience by subbing around the district - basically being a hero.. joking. Sort of. #waledchat
A2: It is critical for students to feel like they can be authentic in your classrooms. HS students are often trying to prove they are “cool” and regularly putting up a facade. They need to love and embrace their true selves #waledchat
A2: Learning from others helps me be a better Principal for our school and for our students. We model what we get. If I value learning and model it, a culture of learning can spread. #waledchat
A2 Empathy allows me to see both and help me understand my students/staff. I can then use their interests/motivation during instruction. It also allows me to stop and see the big picture. Be kind for we are all going through tough battles. #waledchat
A2 - I want to know our Ss & staff. Navigating rough waters & sharing in celebrations is much easier when you know your audience. Plus, people know when you *genuinely* care, & you can’t genuinely care about someone if you don’t take the time to know who they are. #waledchat
A2: building relationships let's Ss know I care & im really there for them. As an elemntary SPED T i work with kids for years. I really get to know them inside and out which I love. #waledchat
A2:
Empathy really helps me stop and check myself if a situation looks like it’s going to escalate. It helps me keep in mind what is truly important in what we’re doing. I have to remember what it’s like to be 11–4. #waledchat
A2: I try to adapt to my Ss needs - whether it's modifying, accommodating, flexible seating, one on one instruction, small group instruction. There is so much that goes on on a daily basis. #waledchat
A2: for me, it is the relationships that make students want to come to class - not necessarily the content. The first step in succes is showing up! #waledchat
A2. By starting with kindness, you build relationships. In building those relationships, Ss will talk to you, share stories with you, trust you, and work with you. #waledchat
#waledchat A2: Responsiveness. Being a good T means responding to the Ss in front of you. I can plan all I want, but the Ss change DAILY. THEY are my mission, not my lesson plan.
"Everyone has a plan, til they get punched in the mouth" -- Mike Tyson
A2: They’re kids; they’re going to make mistakes and do things that may not always be right, but they’re learning and growing. I have to support and guide them to become the best they can be. #waledchat
A3: Same word....relationships. I don't think that this is something that we can quit growing at. We continually need to ensure that we are connecting with Ss and ensuring that we are truly meeting their needs. #waledchat.
A3: I have a lot of growth areas, but I am willing to be vulnerable and admit that. I would like to grow in actually shattering the perfect teacher myth. I have a lot to learn, but I hope others see me as reflective and willing to branch out and try new things. #waledchat
A2 My number one goal is to create and support better human beings. The heart before the mind. I always try to find authentic tasks that will impact our community and make a difference. If we will learn together, let’s leave a lasting impact as well. #waledchat
A3 - I’ve learned to give control to all of the students. PBL has allowed them to become passionate about their own learning. I’m now much more of an cheer leader and motivator. #waledchat
A3: Same word....relationships. I don't think that this is something that we can quit growing at. We continually need to ensure that we are connecting with Ss and ensuring that we are truly meeting their needs. #waledchat.
A2: I use reflection to think about what I can do better for my students. How can I help them decode an unknown word? How can I help them understand where to add punctuation in a story? How can I teach subtraction in a new way? #waledchat
A3: Management. Sometimes I think I think I’m too forgiving, and chalk up certain behaviors to “kids being kids” when they really need reteaching of expectations and manners. #waledchat
A3:
ORGANIZATION! I’m too busy creating and teaching to be organized. Hahaha. Cluttered desks are signs of high intelligence. I have positive excuses !! #waledchat
A4: Time management, classroom management, and behavior management are the areas in which I'm trying to grow. Learning through experience by subbing in Ann Arbor, MI and blogging about it is how I reflect and consider my many options. #waledchat
A3b - I’d add reflection as part 2. Having students reflect ewch day on their learning has helped me do the same. Given me pause on what students really think. #waledchat
A4: Trying my best to breathe, sit back, let things develop. Being a big kid is difficult some days. Lots of great ideas that would be nice to have RIGHT NOW. Having other people like Aunt @jpatter222 and @megan_hacholski to slow me down is nice. I see you Aunt Jean :) #waledchat
Clarification for Q3 #waledchat. Our biggest growth area so far or our biggest growth area needed? I was looking at where I need to grow, not strengths assuming Q1 tackled that. @MrPStrunk
A4: I am trying to differentiate more that way it becomes like second nature to me. I want to make sure every. single. one. of my students feels like I am building lessons that are reaching them. #waledchat
A4: I am jumping in the deep end of Ed Tech...trying everything I can with my students to make their learning experience the best it can be. Exposure to new things to help build their tech toolbox for the future. #waledchat
A4 I became an educator because I care and want to make a difference so it is hard not to take things to heart. I think time and experience have helped but it's still something I need to professionally work on. #waledchat
A4: Delegate, prioritize, spend more time with my family. As much as I want to be a 24-7 Principal, I need to be a dad, husband, brother and son first. #waledchat
A4: TIME is something that is so finite and yet so often ill planned. I struggle with balancing offline and online time; with work and personal time. I have a goal this year to spend more quality offline time with friends and family.
#waledchat
Q4: My nature is to avoid conflict at all costs and tuck away bad feelings when I need to address or confront something I don't agree with and it's not always healthy. You know teaching kids to disagree? That's my own unit of practice! #waledchat
A4: I have grown substantially!! I was a student who always did the work quickly and knew the answers. When I started teaching, I had to use a timer to make sure I gave students wait time. #waledchat
A4: I am trying to grow by being more accepting of how things are and realizing that not everything has to be perfect. Also, realizing that I can trust others to get things done and everything will be okay. #waledchat
A4: I try to listen more and talk less. I try and see as many plays, concerts, games as I can. I try to engage in conversations about what they are interested in. #waledchat
A4 Constantly trying to find the right balance between work, family, friends, personal time. It is always a juggling act. Thx to @MrCoachEli he is always keeping me in check and calling me out when I find excuses. I am a work in progress. #waledchat
A4 - With PBL and reflection the opportunity to be creative is never ending. Teaching and helping kids actually love class is the ultimate goal. They also get to learn things that aren’t what they expected. #waledchat
A4 I'm trying to allow myself to be stronger in areas by not taking on too much. Quality over quantity. I have a tendency to try to do it all. Need to just do a few things really well. #waledchat
A4 I have learned a ton of technology in the last year. Working on beefing up my Google Skills & Pear Deck skills. I'm more of an IPad person #waledchat
A4: I never have enough time to get my lessons as good as I want. Always want to make things more efficient, more engaging and more authentic. Can’t really buy more time so sometimes I just have to be content with what I have. #waledchat
A4 - I have tried doing it all (at work & home) and learned quickly that doesn’t work. Collaboration. Creativity. Community. Utilizing those resources help me find balance & be at peace w/giving up control in some areas. #waledchat
A4: Peer to peer observation. There are incredible teachers throughout each of our buildings and we miss out on the opportunity to learn from them #waledchat
A4: Remember that kids need boundaries, and they won’t learn appropriate behavior without reinforcement. They need the structure to help them be and feel safe, as well as develop into respectable people. #waledchat
A4 I have become much more patient as I have gotten older but I still have a ways to go. I try to remember that negative people need me more than positive people. This is after deep breaths. #waledchat
#waledchat A4: I used to think: relationships are for people who can't teach. But I get it now. Ss have to feel trust & security in, and belief from me in order to take necessary risks. I've made an effort to respond to the PERSON, not just the words. Far more praise and thanks.
A4: I feel like I am easily convinced and swayed. I don’t stand strong in any of my convictions. It’s not just a school thing. I’ve tried to share what I’ve learned and my ideas with the right people. And I ha e a fantastic support system in my grade level dept. #waledchat
A4:
I’ve never been organized. It’s hard for me. Going as digital as I can helps. Finding Ss who are ultra organized and want to take me on as a project is extremely helpful. Carving out time to organize myself each week. #waledchat
A4: I am trying to grow in the area of flexibility by being more prepared. This helps me build more time into my schedule which allows me to feel less stressed and able to jump towards an unplanned activity, event, or conversation. #waledchat
A4. I don't think I'm making much progress yet, but the goal is to take intentional time to disconnect. Still working on this, but intentional friends and family time is important.#waledchat
A4 Flexibility is hard for me, I have had a lot of changes in the past few years and it threw me. I am trying to let things go. There are things that I love to teach, but does it serve my Ss. That’s where my reflection keeps kicking in #waledchat
#waledchat You are not wrong. I've visited 34 out of 50 teachers in our school so far this year. It's been a TOP priority, needless to say. My goal: to tell a positive story about each classroom.
A5: My fav thing is how no day is the same; some days are frustrating, but some days are AMAZING. Knowing I've made a permanent impact on kids is frightening, yet powerfully inspiring at the same time.#waledchat
A5: My favorite thing about being a teacher is the connections I'm able to make with the kids and the hope that I am making some kind of an impact on their life. #waledchat
A5: Getting to share my LOVE of learning and PASSION for history with my students everyday. When my students come up to me and tell me that they are excited that they have my class today it makes it all worthwhile! #waledchat
A5: My favorite thing about being a teacher and a coach (both for Ss & Ts) is helping others. There is not much of a better feeling than knowing you truly helped someone achieve something or grow!
#waledchat
A5: When kids take an idea or piece of information and share it in some other way (i.e. When my kids share an animal of the week fact to someone outside our room, or in a different learning context) #waledchat
Attention all #waledchat fans! Thank you for joining me tonight! Special announcement: NEXT Thursday we will have our first ever guest moderators in @misskoplin@ToddRisser I guarantee you won't want to miss out! #122edchat#tlap#learnlap
A5b: And, oh the feels you get when you see a T or S pay it forward (help or teach) with another T or S. That's a lifelong memory right there.
#waledchat
A5: We get to educate and learn with the eager young minds of tomorrow. We get to watch them learn, grow, make mistakes, figure out who they want to be. How awesome is that? #waledchat
A5 Being there to support kids, to help discover learning, to make a difference. Challenging kids to be better and to make the world better. Help kids become thinkers and help them challenge the status quo. Spreading kindness. #waledchat
A5 My favorite part is the difference we make. It's empowering knowing you are setting someone up for their best future. Every day matters. Every kids matters. You never know how far your impact reaches. #waledchat
A5 Being able to work with students and help them see reach that aha moment, build confidence in themselves, and making a difference. Everyone needs a positive figure...in Rita's words, "a champion." #WaledChat
A5: I truly love it when a student takes time out of their day to say “Thank You for ________ “. When they appreciate what is going on in class, I know I am making a difference in their life, both as a student and as a person. #waledchat
A4 We are doing a "Spring Training" Writing session where all of our students are working on writing. Better curriculum helps too. We are using CCSS Writing to Texts book. #waledchat
A5: My favorite thing about being a teacher is hopefully making a difference. I look at my former teachers and know, in my heart, that I aspire to care as much as they did. #waledchat
A5: Being the voice for my kids, when they can’t be... yet. As a SPED teacher, I know I have to be there to ensure my students are getting what they need, even when they don’t know they need it. #waledchat
Intros: Welcome to #waledchat! Introduce yourself, where you are from, your role in education, and tag someone who you'd like to see join you here tonight! #waledchat
A5: The impact that I have on my 7th graders. I get to see them grow and mature a lot in one year! They become little adults by the end of the school year. #waledchat
TBH, I wrote this response while watching the @BlueJays game during lunch in my lab while some of the EL kids were working on a project across from my station. They went nuts when they completed their circuit. Made my day. #waledchat
