The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
For writing, there has to be an audience. That's actually part of what we teach - writing for a specific audience. That's hard to do if the only person who ever sees a student's writing is the teacher. #bfc530
Manufacturing authenticity starts with me in the classroom. I have to be the real me 24/7. I have to be able to share my struggles with the students,so they will be authentic with me. #bfc530
I provide students with meaningful work experiences that are modified or scaffolded versiins of what people do in the field. I remind them of the importance and relevance of each topic and of the overriding skill. Finally, I get them outside into the real world. #bfc530
Morning #bfc530 One of our department goals for the year is to make our Business lessons reflect real life, so basically everything do:) But I teach Personal Finance so making it authentic is pretty easy:)
Step 1: Build strong relationships with each student - know what they truly care about. Step 2: Develop #PBL projects that provide authentic, community-based connections between the curriculum & those things. Step 3: Facilitate the magic of deep, engaged learning. #bfc530
In answer to this morning’s question, I don’t believe we “manufacture” authenticity...we must LIVE authenticity...model it in all that we say and do! #bfc530
Keep it real! Make it about kids, and their life experiences and how they relate to their learning, facilitate connections through relationships, instruction and genuine conversations! #bfc530 😊 👍
I am loving all the wonderful STEAM creations that I'm seeing happen across our County. I also love when I see authentic writing taking place in classrooms based on what children are wondering or are curious about. #bfc530

I’d like to tip my hat to the question writer for the use of the phrase “manufacture authenticity.” It’s thought provoking and accurate about life in the classroom - but it kinda stings too... #bfc530
#bfc530 To "manufacture authenticity in the classroom" ... take your students OUTSIDE of the classroom! A photo from Sunday when students worked at the Children's Carnival at the @OutOnALimbF Beach Benefit - what a day!
@DianeProvvido@IAmHuman
Authenticity starts with me. If I am not authentic with my attitude and desire to do what’s best for kids, it won’t matter what my space looks like. Relationships must come first. #bfc530
When they're writing, students should be working toward publishing - why else would we be motivated to move beyond rough draft. And there are so many options for student publishing now - share via Google docs, post in a blog, read aloud in a podcast, create an eBook. #bfc530

@DrCSJones Many thanks @franziski123.
The word manufactures throws me in the question.
I think the question is trying to solicit ideas of authentic learning experiences.

This!!! A key part of a relevant, authentic classroom (and school) is an authentic audience! Expand the classroom walls by engaging with the community and sharing student learning beyond the classroom! This helps: https://t.co/7BsHugm52Q#bfc530

Gm. Interesting word choice for this question. I think “manufacture “and “authenticity “are oxymorons. Trying to create this combo will getme booed off the stage of the classroom. Stage presence compromised for along time Ss always see fake. . #BFC530
I try to make my writing assignments about things they can relate to. For instance, yesterday, we wrote our thoughts on peer pressure and anxiety to do well in school. Their writing was truth and eye opening. Keys were tapping for over 40 minutes on that one! #bfc530
I make it a point to mention that my brain grew more from making a mistake and learning from it, then all of the 1,000s of tasks that I completed successfully today combined. #bfc530 We only grow when we learn!
Right now my students are writing memoirs. I’m writing one too. When they write narrative nonfiction, so do I. When they write arguments, so do I. Authenticity happens when you do what your students do. That’s when you can hold them to that standard. #bfc530
I try hard to prepare my students for jobs not invented yet. So. We work a lot on the soft skills, grit, problem solving, kindness, respect etc #bfc530
Good morning everyone- for my Ss who have yet to find their passion for reading and writing, authenticity is crucial. No canned prompts but real-world experiences which are meaningful and personal. We write for people and for a purpose, not to file away in a workbook #bfc530
Spot on, Kevin! Authenticity means moving beyond the canned lessons and the textbook and into real-world applications where there is no "answer in the back of the book" and students define their own problems. That's a beautiful place to model a #growthmindset! #bfc530
I don't always teach history w/the relevance to my students in mind. There are times we all need to know how small we are in this wonderful & perplexing world. Sometimes the topic is candy, other times it's brussels sprouts. #bfc530

mmm....Not sure you can ‘manufacture authenticity’, by definition it wouldn’t be authentic. I guess it could be an authentic copy! What I do know is that for a classroom to have activities that appear spontaneous/ done on the fly, takes a lot of planning.

Today's question is a great one. #bfc530 I remember, when I was teaching writing, that I would write alongside and for my students. Share in the same circle they shared in.
The key for me is the term "authenticity," because as you say, kids can tell if it's inauthentic - i.e. lame or fake - like a shark can smell blood in the water. We have to ensure that community, real-world-based relevance is the norm and not the exception. #bfc530
I think the experience can still be authentic though, even if the topic doesn't have direct relevance to student lives. It's what students do with what they learn they gives them a reason for learning it... beyond simply, the teacher said so. #bfc530
I try to connect the topics in my ELL classes to the students’ interests and experiences. We learn about each student’s culture. They are so proud to share. #bfc530
I try to be real & authentic with my students by sharing about myself when it comes up. Often during the question of the day icebreaker ; if they're willing to share, I should be too.

I dig these ... issue I have is many of these cannot be replicated in a traditional classroom environment, but yet here we sit with the majority of classes being held in their silos pretending to be authentic. #bfc530
Interesting, David. #bfc530 That authenticity needs to be planned, in some manner, yes? That is, a long project that addresses a local problem or issue, with a real world-related and public assessment at the end. All needs to be carefully considered/planned.
Nice! I'm sure you have seen this, but it rocked my paradigm for how to be a much, much better math teacher by letting the students define their own problems: https://t.co/ZYdnr47aGS#bfc530
History is on a cycle ... almost every moment in history can be linked to a similar even happening today ... similar scenario , different people. #bfc530
I don't simplify language in terms of key content words or tone. I don't talk at or down to kids in a baby voice, and we don't substitute challenging words with related ones that are easy. We use actual, specific, standards-based, curriculum-related vocabulary. #bfc530#ddestem
As the father of a high school student, Andrew, who has a job, anything we can do to share what real work is seems important, even some random, after school job at a local restaurant. #BFC530 See my recent blog posts, https://t.co/66OIy9Tm0A
I remember learning that from a Principal when I was in my final year as a Student Teacher on prac. If you want the Ss to encounter real world experiences, then you need to have a plan to ensure they encounter it with awe and wonder. #bfc530
A 6th gr. student yesterday told me that I've made writing exciting again. He said in 5th grade the teacher "taught it so that we'd all hate it". My heart hurt. It's not difficult to make it fun, just takes some thought and preparation. We owe it to the kids to do it. #bfc530
As an AP, my classroom is my teachers. My hope is to build positive relationships and not be afraid to fall forward, not know the answers, ask for help, etc. Authenticity comes when I admit I don’t know everything and our school needs each of us working together ❤️ #BFC530

I didnt wake up this morning expecting a question I write 3 weeks ago for #bfc530. And I definitely didnt think my word choice would be so controversial. I'm up, intellectually stimulated and ready to go!
Our teachers have a quick check in question at the beginning of their collaborative team meetings. It is my favorite part! I love to build community and share stories with them in this way #BFC530
I’m a big advocate of using ‘I Wonder’ Qs. On ‘manufacturing authenticity’ it’s a philosophical stance. In manufacturing a ‘real’ Santa experience, despite it not being true, can lead to an encounter of values behind the narrative & opp at some point for critical thinking #bfc530
Vocabulary is only one part of authentic learning overall. It's hard to make connections if students can't recall specific words and concepts previously applied in meaningful learning experiences. #bfc530
Every child should have that opportunity to encounter the awe & wonder and to formulate their own hypothesis as to why and maybe even check that hypothesis out. Good luck! #bfc530
Of course! But vocab won’t stick if it’s not used and vocab is key part of learning. Not insinuating it’s done in isolation but weaved into the entire unit. #bfc530

Agree. Ts need to model there is a reason. Remember teaching a Sunday School class on church history & one of my students, a PhD in biochemistry so he knows something about learning said "It seems like you enjoy everything you discuss with us & that is what draws us in" #bfc530
Relevance is the selling point ... my kids are not running to my class for edutainment ... I get a lot of "That was fun" ... but what I get more of ... "Mr Dill, How do you know so much stuff?" #bfc530 ... I am a dot connector.
Across units, subjects, grades... When we learn new concepts, we access prior knowledge in hopes and pursuit of making meaningful connections. This is why teaching and learning aren't meant to happen in silos, boxes, or canned lessons. #bfc530#verticalalignment#lifelonglearning
I think of authenticity as more facilitated than manufactured. But in my school, Ss are already very real. Most of the time, it's the teacher who has to work to be more authentic. That means vulnerability, being wrong and ok with it, asking others questions, and sharing.
