Ashley from NY, trying very hard to stay awake tonight for the chat, A1: incorporating games in teaching and learning makes the content more fun, interesting and relatable. No more why do we need to know this or when will we ever use this in life??? #scitlap
A1: Games allow Ss to learn and enjoy themselves during the process... also has a different mindset attached Ss often get involved and strive to do their best when "gaming" The fear of failure disappears #scitlap
And is "accepted" as such... They will learn from it and try harder the next time. It amazes me sometimes, how they dont seem to make the same connections with "learning." #scitlap
I’m just wrapping up my atomic theory and structure unit and I assigned the ss to play the little alchemy games online to springboard off of Democratus. I’m going to teach nuclear next and I found a fusion game for it too where they start with H and have to make Fe #scitlap
A3: this is the first year I’m experimenting with games in my class. My ss are competitive and like to solve problems, be challenged but too hard or they give up. Some of my ss told me they were googling cheats already for the alchemy game 😂 #scitlap

Here’s another fun one, I plan to use next marking period for polyatomic ions but there’s a few options of categories to play #scitlap
A4: I just gave away my 3 new science games before this question was posted but I think it would be fun to set up a class tug of war for bonding; covalent vs ionic (guess which ion always wins 😜) #Scitlap
A4: Pictionary... forces Ss to think through content through diagramming, or simple pictographs it requires them to understand it well enough to relate it. Makes for a good review day #scitlap
Sometimes when there’s a few minutes left in the period I let the ss come up with a secret message to tell their friends but they can only use atomic numbers so the other ss has to spell it out and figure out what they’re trying to say #scitlap
In science we play Codenames for communication, Spyfall for questioning & listening, and Timeline Science & Discovery to learn more science history. #scitlap
Sorry not sure where you all are in the chat. On iPads: 4 pics 1 Word, Quizlet Live anything, Farkle to practice risk, Spades for Teamwork or Spades with deck of cards. #scitlap
A5: biggest hurdles- making sure everyone is participating, picking a game that has educational relevance and supports content not wasting time just to have fun #Scitlap
A5: Making connections to what we are.trying to learn/achieve...its not about content all the time, but I often have to remind them of the goal #scitlap
Getting everyone to participate is a tough one. I have Ss that rage quit or just never figure out how to login. During my @gimkit session I had Ss promise not to get triggered and scream. #scitlap
I always remind them now about the learning. We're not playing games just cause I didn't plan a lesson or want to waste time. There is a reason! @RetrieveLearn#scitlap
