Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
The topic is going rogue... right? I want it all, including this twitter chat, and my professional development to be differentiated for my needs, interests, and preferences. #21stedchat
A1. We know that effectively using S data to drive instruction for S learning is a best practice. We also know giving S ownership through empowering them to use their data is another best practice. So why wouldn't we Personalize PD! #21stedchat
A1 we are at a crossroads in the way PD is accepted. We have the folks who need traditional settings. People who want it at their own time. People who want to share the learning collaboratively #21stEdChat
A1: Learning is a personal journey. The more closely our learning styles, needs, and preferences are aligned with learning resources and opportunities, the more fruitful and enriching our growth will be. #21stedchat
I have had some folks that didn’t log out of their computer because they didn’t know their password. With folks like that I set aside 30 mins a week to work with that person. Small steps and relationship building #21stEdChat
A2 I stopped using professional in front of development. I like to use the term collaborative development. Having folks use their interests to learn how to use the tool #21stedChat
A2 The tech facilitator and I created choice boards on Canvas for the summer and each quarter for trs to choose own PD path. Excited to see it in action. Trs get badges + points for completion to earn school rewards. #21stedchat
I stopped using development behind professional. Can we call it Professional Learning? Professional Development sounds like we're not quite professionals yet. #21stedchat
I agree, there is a distinction between professional development and professional learning because to me, PD is a one and done verse professional learning improves educators professional knowledge, competence, skill and effectiveness. #21stedchat
A2 Put a few copies of a relevant/enlightening article each week in a common area. Easy to read a quick article and may spark further inquiry. #21stedchat
Whew, I'm here. Dave from MI . HS Science Teacher. Quite the weekend. Finished getting our house ready to sell and our first open house & our 40th Anniversary for my wife and I. #21stedchat
Professional learning opportunities are not one-and-done events; they’re starting lines from which to learn, grow, extend, and experience for a long time. #HamstraHighlights: https://t.co/MjL84cxbca
A3 a lot of PD seems so regimented. We have to cover all of this in this time. There isn’t time to process and apply. Or even ask I wonder what would happen if I did this? #21stEdChat
A3: My initial wonderment has me leaning #edcamp model, but with accountability and progress monitoring by admin and peers along the way, throughout the year. #21stedchat
Not at all. But professional learning (done thru the district) would have to have some accountability involved, right? Best of both worlds? #21stedchat
I feel PD to be effective it should have an application component. Edcamps are great, and I love them, but if it doesn't lead to better practice then was it effective for that person? #21stedchat
Hard to monitor everyone selecting their best-fit PL opp, and not just what's easiest. It's also hard to progress monitor and have accountability in place. And let's face it--Differentiation is hard work! Similar reasons why Ts wrestle with it in the classrooms. #21stedchat
A4: Yes and Yes. Twitter seems like a very collaborative place. EdCamp you can meet people from different locations but with the same interests, subject areas, etc. #21stedchat
A4: Nothing beats F2F. Nothing. Ever. At the very least, I think professional learning and higher education should always offer some F2F, and not just online. Online learning only is valuable and has its place, but It's just not the same as F2F. #21stedchat
A4 in those events, you can choose what you want to learn. It might be better because you can focus on what you are weak in or want to try. Those are not options in traditional Pd settings #21stEdChat

Which is exactly why we added an application component to the PD for this upcoming year. Has to go beyond sit and get credit. Not very professional #21stEdChat
A4 PD is what you make it. I love to do both F2F and at home learning. This week alone I will doing a Schoology district course, taping a webinar to post later, attending a BOCES workshop and watching #ditchsummit and #strobelsummit videos
#21stEdChat
Yes! We are actually trying this concept this year. All PD time will be based on their genius hour idea/passion project. Can’t wait to see what comes out of it. #21stEdChat
A5 Go get it yourself, and who cares if you get a CEU or not is how I feel most of the time. Don't wait for somebody else to do it for you = excuses. #21stEdChat
A5 I think Ts are reluctant to attend when they are afraid that this "new thing" will be out in a couple years. If you put the time in, you need to know it will stick around. SDs have to focus on things that work and are not "trendy" #21stEdChat
A5: Differentiation is hard. Set up methods for professional learners to chart their own course, share and prove their progress by benchmarks, and allow space and time for feedback and continuity. #21stedchat
