Hi to all my friends in #NGSSChat land. Ted Willard here at NSTA Galactic Headquarters in beautiful downtown Arlington VA. Stayed late to do some Educational Cartography.
Q1 As you review the school year up to this point and take stock- what is one of your big wins? AND..How did you get there? (maybe your insight can help others achieve!) #NGSSchat
A1) After working for a few years on developing Ss ability write CERs they are rocking it! Now we are working on 3D assessments and starting to develop richer storylines that are phenomena based. #ngsschat
A1 This was my best year so far teaching modeling. I think I did a better job of using guided discourse on student exemplars to drive improvement in my students' work. Plus they love seeing how strong their peers' work can be! #ngsschat
A1 I have been using #FormativeAssessment more as a guide this year, not fully there yet...if there is such a thing...but chats on the topic like #ngsschat & #formativechat have really helped the process
A1: Hi Tricia! One of my big wins is the awesome relationships I have formed with “challenging” students. I got there by chipping away at conversations with them, going to their sports games, @ consulting veteran teachers to look past curriculum and see the STUDENTS! #NGSSchat
A1: Finishing Semester course.... big win is success with productive talk in my classroom. Plenty of room for growth but student to student conversations made a big difference in learning / growth for all! #NGSSChat
A1: I think my PLCs big win is seeing how easy it is for our kids to discuss and give feedback in each other’s models. Initially we had to do a lot of scaffolding to get them to share now I feel like we can’t get them to stop modeling on whiteboards. #ngsschat

A1/ Chris Geerer MS Sci T from Mich. a big win for me was getting large whiteboards for my class (thx to my principal) and working with some Modeling Ts and stealing their methods. We whiteboard all the time now! #NGSSchat
A1: (1) wins:3 @DonorsChoose projects funded for field guides, binoculars & @RightQuestion QFT materials! (2) shifting unit plans to SEP/DCI/CCC organizer (3) beginning to implement QFT and seeing Ss really get into it! #NGSSchat

SO much goodness packed into this share! What I see as a thread throughout is a focus on ALL students-- thinking shared through modeling, honoring all students & giving them an opp to contribute through discourse, learning w/in a community of peers! #Sci4allSs#NGSSchat

Midterm week next week and I just posted a Qfocus: "Studying improves test scores" and had them start writing Q's using the protocol. @RightQuestion has website with all freely accessible materials! YAY! #ngsschat
In reply to
@wolfsciedu, @DonorsChoose, @RightQuestion, @RightQuestion
A1 Thought my revamped Ecology Unit was better. More drawing/writing as modeling to show growth of understanding. better alignment of tasks. Took longer but that's ok #NGSSchat

A1 One of my big wins this year is fully incorporating my student teacher so students look to him as a teacher. I’ve also pushed CER and it is doing wonders! #ngsschat
Reading #TheFeedbackLoop has been a big help The biggest game changer was not to over science my assessment Keeping them simple & focused on DCIs that integrated CCCs & SEPs was 1st step #ngsschat
We give kids phenomena and they try to explain using a model, then we do an investigation and they go back and refine. Sometimes they “duel” by comparing and adding ideas. Sometimes we come up with a group consensus led by a student leader... #amta has lots of methods #ngsschat

Q2 Love these questions I recently heard proposed to a team-- pick one and more and respond!
What should we stop doing? What should we keep the same? What should we start doing? #NGSSchat
#ngsschat has taught me that all too often the concept is not the goal of ALL teachers YET because they learned topics & find it difficult to transform alone.
#forsythpln#learningtransfer
For initial quick models, final models, quick graphs, brainstorming, data...I can frame their Qs and let them create ways to gather and display data and share their learning. No one “correct” way...it’s liberating and real. #NGSSchat
Q2- we should stop worrying about perfection and start with wherever kids are at. Listening and working on having a class conversation with science talks #NGSSchat
A2: we should start letting kids ask the questions. I have been doing this for a few semesters and, yes, they do ask the “right” questions and it empowers their learning. We should stop worrying so much about assessment and keep the focus on promoting learning
#NGSSChat
do you have a whiteboard with an evolving model to show class growth or are they constantly erase redo? Curious about how well they remember what they did and where they are now #NGSSchat
A2:
Just my opinion but . . .
I think we should worry less about getting through all the DCIs (especially middle school) and worry more about how we are building their SEP 💪🏼 #ngsschat
Q2 Love these questions I recently heard proposed to a team-- pick one and more and respond!

We should STOP...
1. Introducing vocabulary before students have conceptual understanding
2. Assessing students with recall questions.
3. Writing the standard on the chalkboard
#NGSSchat

Start doing: transparency with Ss, speaking the same NGSS language with Ss regarding what the heck are DCI, CCC, SEPs - intentionally defining the vocab we use as much w Ss as we do with each other! #ngsschat
A2: Stop living in low rigor places. Keep emphasizing practices and start letting kids grapple with even more rigorous practices-based tasks! And start letting kids talk more! (That goes for me, too.) #ngsschat

Too often I give my Ss too much, or additional science content because I "think" they need more background. I need to trust their natural background and let them discover DCI knowledge #NGSSchat

A Caveat: 59 PEs aren't possible given that students enter middle school without having done all of NGSS (and often any of NGSS) in Elementary School. If they came in with a strong foundation, maybe 59 PEs *are* possible. #NGSSchat@meganrelmore@geererc
This is powerful! and I know what you mean, year after year I remind at times I have to remind myself to TRUST. It always turns out great when I do, but it takes a awhile to break all of those old teaching habits #NGSSchat

Q3: Let’s turn these questions around (from about ourselves to thinking about the new science vision as a whole). Pls comment on how far we have come in the last 6 years? As a science community-- what are our wins? Where do we need to focusing our attention in 2019? #NGSSchat
Q2: We should encourage Ss to take risks. Rewire their thinking to know it's ok to not know the "right" answer immediately and ok to be wrong as learning happens by reflecting on mistakes. Challenge ss to think! @NGSSchat@TdiShelton@AchieveInc@Ted_NSTA
A3 It is now mainstream to have students DO science rather than learn it! I also believe that NGSS has brought new focus to science in elementary which strengthens lifelong understanding! #ngsschat
A3 This could be a whole chat or two just on this question The #NGSS standards have move Sci Ts light years since 2013 The how we teach is now more inline w/how Ss think, but we still need attention on new teaching pedagogy #NGSSchat

A3 Cont. I think that it is now time to collaborate nationally on what we have learned so far. Let’s quit recreating the wheel in every district. St. Louis anyone? #nsta19#ngsschat

Agreed Brian! What topics/areas of pedagogy do you think are most needed OR would have the biggest impact on #NGSS implementation if they were used more often? #NGSSchat
A3: We are at the stage where people's attention can be diverted to something else that seems bright and shiny and new. We *MUST* continue on the journey we have begun with #ngss because in truth, we have only barely begun the journey. #NGSSchat

NGSS is a moral imperative! I am so excited for a new generation of who can argue from EVIDENCE, with civility - and all Ss have access. Finally feel like I can help to change the world. #NGSSchat
A3: The fact there is this much positive momentum for NGSS, a national movement to roll out standards after CC is a WIN! Sharing so many resources collegially & being intentional about setting science up as 3D! #ngsschat

A3) Focusing on skills and not just content. Ss are doing more writing and more analyzing. Thinking like scientists. Using phenomena to spark curiosity. I have actually had Ss this year (just today) tell me that these phenomena are so interesting! #ngsschat
A3 Cont. I think that it is now time to collaborate nationally on what we have learned so far. Let’s quit recreating the wheel in every district. St. Louis anyone? #nsta19#ngsschat
A3: The big win is the rigor that comes from the practices. Not sure how, but I'd like to push on assessment in 2019. I still see "NGSS-aligned" items that assess the same tired recall stuff. #ngsschat
A3: In STL we’ve made a ton of K-5 progress, from little/no sci (or reading only) to 3D units. I’d never heard of phenomena before 4 years ago. We have much to do to help w understanding what phenomena are and true meaning of CCCs and SEPs, K-12. Info spread is slow. #ngsschat

The biggest area of pedagogy flip is to facilitate more & teach less Having Ss take the lead w/pacing & questioning is some of that new #NGSS pedagogy #NGSSchat

A3: Science must start before 5th grade! There is no way the brief chunks of time doing general science is not enough to prepare students to meet MS requirements. Early Elementary is the perfect time to develop the ability to think like scientists! #NGSSChat
A3: I do think we need to focus our attention on equity for all, checking our own bias in storylines being created and increase diversity of our STEM educators and Ss who go into STEM! #ngsschat
A3 we've come so far & yet it feels like we are infants just rolling over and lifting our heads. Our focus is 2 press ourselves 2 begin. If we all take 1 collective step forward this yr, then all of our Ss will be that much more prepared as they begin the nxt yr. #NGSSchat

do you think there is a minimum goal that should be shot for? If 59 is max in an ideal scenario what's the minimum if there is essentially no foundation? #NGSSchat

Q4: today a long term sub left our building after 16 weeks. She brought me a gift and thanked me for keeping her sane, encouraging her and validating her efforts. It’s important to help others see their value! #NGSSChat

A4 Lollipop moments emphasize that we all make big differences in people's lives everyday. I hope everyone in our #NGSSchat feels our appreciation for sharing their thinking, their expertise, their support and their time with us! I am honored to learn with you! #NGSS
That isn't really possible to answer because I don't know your context. What I'd say is that you should try each year to do better than you did the year before. You should also be deliberate about what goals are the most powerful for your Ss (as opposed to your favs) #NGSSchat

A4: I have a student this year who struggled at first. Still struggles with attendance. He wrote me a note at Thanksgiving telling me how much he appreciates me believing in him in science and school. He doesn't know how much that note motivates me to teach my best. #ngsschat
I am Detra a 6th/7th grade teacher. Hi, sorry so late. Busy with school work. A3- I think we have come so far with common standards that have fostered collaboration, but we still need more high quality curriculum support #NGSSChat
A4: Hey my EQuIP friend @jessesemeyn our Uber ride conversation was super helpful in giving me confidence to feel like I am a human with valuable edu knowledge amidst a sea of “thought leaders”. Thanks for your curiosity, openness, and enthusiasm! #ngsschat
A5 Be more consistent in attending #NGSSchat, been a busy year. Keep blogging about what we do & the power of #NGSS When possible present at conferences & offer PD to share my view of sci ed #NGSSchat
A3: I think our win is that we have built a nationwide community of practice via Twitter. Go #ngsschat. We need to focus our attention on EQUITY. Looking at culturally relevant pedagogy and relevant phenomena that can ignite student thinking for ALL learners. #equity

A4: kindnesscatching rolled out at our school. Brought in homemade soup and shared with a colleague and got a kindness mention for it! Totally awesome! #ngsschat
A5: Well, sharing best practices about 3D instruction with others isn't really my job.
Oh wait a minute, that's totally my job. :-)
Come to the NSTA Conf. in St. Louis and you will find 4 solid days of things we've planned for you around NGSS and other 3D standards. #NGSSchat
Q5: I am committed to continuing to grow my NGSS teaching and to encouraging my colleagues and workshop attendees to do the same. I’m my room the spring focus will be to continue to work on productive talk and modeling skills #NGSSChat
A5: Say yes to any opportunity I get to lead PD. Step up in my science department by sharing what's going well. And participate in more #ngsschat Twitter chats!
I want to commit to writing something for #nsta Science Scope on the importance of building confidence within a PLC and working hard to find incredible PD that inspires us. But I’m not sure if it’s really the right audience or not. #ngsschat
We need to start creating systems of support for elementary science education. If we want to eventually get to a 3-year graduation requirement, then we need to strengthen our science foundations at the elementary level. #ngsschat

your ending comment I think is super helpful for ppl trying to navigate currently and reflecting for the future. Since our class needs to be about our Ss lets focus on them #NGSSchat

Q6: topics - I like what we do... varied topics. A good focus might be modeling or CER or formative / summative assessment. I love the current leadership... but I get that others should step up... perhaps a chat on that topic! #NGSSChat
A6: BIG 2019 goal - supporting my ELL's in mastering rigorous science content and skills! I can do vocab with them, but I need to shoot higher. #ngsschat
