Welcome to the #ProDriven chat! I am Josh from De Pere, WI, and I am honored to be filling in for @jbormann3 tonight.
Please let us know who you are and where you are joining us from tonight!
A1 I have a crazy, redneck uncle from MS whose name is Russell. He's a gr8 story teller because he's passionate and always willing to laugh at himself! #ProDriven
A1: I've been fortunate to be around so many great storytellers in my life, from my father @TheThrob1 to @davidtedu. However, I think @artlaflamme has to be the best storyteller I know right now!
He has so many great life experiences and can provide vivid details!
#ProDriven
A1: this is a tough one for me but the first thing that comes to mind are the First Nations individuals that have visited the schools to speak to the students. Their stories ignite the imagination and always have an important message. They also tell them with passion. #ProDriven
I'm assuming First Nations would be equivalent to Native Americans? Such an incredible tradition of storytelling in those nations and cultures! #ProDriven
A1: My dad. He was an Air Force pilot. He used to send us reel-to-reel bedtime stories about how Smokey the Bear save the forest form Vietnam before he died in a plane crash in Thailand. #ProDriven
A2: Even though I always thought of teaching as a potential career, I didn't switch to an Education major until halfway through my junior year in college to be on a similar path to my wife @GauthierRebecca.
I'd say it has worked out!
#ProDriven
A2 To make a difference
& tell my story. Single mom, 1st gen college student, disability, horrible 1st experiences in school ...but it doesn't end there unless I let it! If you want it, no one can stop you... if you don't,
No one can help you #ProDriven
A2: Most are inspired by someone who did it well but for me it was loving a subject so much but feeling cheated by poor teaching. I wanted to make learning engaging. #ProDriven
While I am so sorry that happened, I am glad you have those stories to remember him by. My dad is an excellent storyteller as well - will absolutely put us in stitches with his tales. #ProDriven
So many great stories so far during the #proDriven chat! If you are out there lurking, feel free to jump in and swap stories with us!
Question 3 coming up!
I think many teachers were equally "opposite inspired" - wanting to be a great teacher someday because of one they didn't have. Glad kids going through a struggle have you in their classroom! #ProDriven
My dad passed away basically just before I started K. I wish that I could say I had a supportive tchr... she was anything but - her memory taught me a lot though about who I don't want to be as a tchr.
A3: in my first year out of Teacher’s College I ‘lost’ the grade 11 gym class that I was supposed to be teaching. Luckily my brother was a student in the school and recruited him and his friends to find the class and return them to me. 😳 #ProDriven
A3: I taught a Keyboarding class and had a student who came in a great typist. She forced me to reconsider everything I knew about teaching and find ways to reach students on an individual level and differentiate. #ProDriven
A3: One of the first stories that comes to mind is when I started at a new school and a veteran teacher looked @ my class roster to “warn” me about trouble makers. I chose to meet them before having an opinion. One of the best decisions I ever made #ProDriven
A3 1/2 I was ST & asked a group of ss what they like most/ least about school... a gr of boys said rdg I followed up with why - they replied it's boring. I told them they hadn't read the right book. I discovered they liked action & adventure
#ProDriven
A3 2/2 I read them book 1 of Gordon Korman series about teens climbing Everest. I brought in a guest spkr who had actually submitted. They were hooked.they begged me to read books 2 & 3! I loved the challenge & seeing their minds changed.

Q4: Tell a story about the student you learned the most from. If you want, you can share several students that taught you things!
(I see this is kind of similar to the last question, but I'm sure you have lots of students to choose from!)
#ProDriven
A4: Three years ago, at around this time in the school year, I got a new student. Syrian refugee who reminded me of me at that age. My work as an educator shifted from that day forward. #ProDriven
A4. I had a kid give me 14 puncture wounds his first day, he had sharp fingernails. I learned motivation is a more effective skill than demand compliance. #ProDriven
A4: A S I had that was "that kid" What the Princ. told me to do went against ever fiber of my being. Long story short., I didn't do it her way. I did it mine and "that kid" ended up responding positively. #ProDriven
A4: I remember Carson, teaching me about working with tough kids. Just because you try and build a good rapport with a kid, doesn't guarantee they'll work for you right then.
Thankfully, years later, he was always excited to see me and share what he was learning!
#ProDriven
A5: How to work in collaboration with Head Start in the school district. They don't "play in the sand box together " very well. It's their way or the highway. #ProDriven
A4 You never really know what all Ss are dealing with k even if you've had a less than perfect life) This yr I had a S ask for a home cooked meal as a reward for good behavior because he hadn't had one in months! Also have a S wearing shoes 2 while sizes 2 small! #ProDriven
A5. I am learning more about Individual Education Plans (IEPs) as to teach and educate others about making them more effective for the students first and always. #ProDriven
A5: How to move our school district forward. I know what I think we need to take it to the next level, but am I right? Can I help the administration see it too? Am I overstepping my role as a tech coach? #ProDriven
A6. In a negative sense, my first Principal taught me to question becoming a Principal. Luckily, my second one, taught me the value of being a Leader. #ProDriven
A5: I’m currently working on becoming a better math teacher. The struggle is deep and real. Connected to how I learned Math and feeling like I am not “good” at it. #ProDriven
A6: I can't let this question go by without shouting out to @sagerj and @dixielily. Would never have been the teacher I am today without those two in my first few years! So many great conversations and guidance!
#proDriven
A6: @mccall_kelley She was my prin. last year. I felt like she really understands what my little people need and she supported me more than I had ever been supported in my beliefs about teaching. #ProDriven
A5. This isn't a story as much as a statement - finding balance, pushing others to have expectations that are a achievable, & the struggle to make a living for all the work I do.
#ProDriven
A7. #CUE2018 was my favorite and most important learning experience, PD on warp drive. So much information, a beyond positive climate, and so much more. #ProDriven
A7: Easy! Hearing @SporLin ! Everything he says about trauma-informed/trauma-responsive spoke right to my heart. I am humbled and honored to call him my Edu-Hero and friend! #ProDriven
A7: For me, it is a tie. Specific event: EdcampMadWI in 2013 launched me into a lot of awesome changes to my instruction.
Otherwise, the #PatioPD and #FiresidePD events I hosted at my house were incredibly impactful, especially with my colleagues #ProDriven
A7: I might be biased but it was using @jbormann3 Professionally Driven model to study mindfulness in the classroom. My learning has grown me and I have used it with multiple students at many grade levels. It has been a ripple effect. Best PD in 20 years. #ProDriven
The February Tech Challenge. Earn points for trying different things. I was motivated by the competition but discovered the math PLN on Twitter and it has transformed my teaching (and my life) #ProDriven
My 1st P made me ? if I was suited for teaching. Luckily I moved on after a yr & went to a new school where my contributions were greatly appreciated! #ProDriven
A6 my 1st yr T I worked in a challenging school where all Ss came from poverty & trauma! My mentor arranged 4 coworkers 2 bring meals. Some other T I barely knew contributed & warmed my heart. Those Ss needing me kept me going on the darkest days even during 5 mos chemo#ProDriven
Q8: For a little inspiration to head out into the world after this chat, tell a story about your favorite lesson. What did you do to create an engaging learning experience for students? #ProDriven
A7 @GauthierRebecca & I led our staff in PD where we were given choice & voice. I learned so much! Unfortunately, there's no longer this option & the forced PD now leaves quite a bitter taste in my mouth! #ProDriven
A8: Last year, I was fortunate to work with our 7th grade Social Studies team to craft an "Amazing Race" style unit to study Ancient Egypt. Each day had new challenges for students to encounter and use their learning to succeed in!
#ProDriven
A8. My favorite lesson is each and every year when we as a class use #Hourofcode for all of us to learn about coding. I learn just as much if not more than the kids. Just a engaging time for all. #ProDriven
I love 3 Act Tasks. My fave is compound interest w/ @robertkaplinsky tasks. Futurama and Austin Powers video clips. Engaging because Ss want to know how much is in Frye's bank account and they learn how to calculate compound interest without me giving a formula. #prodriven
So, @BSaidWright and I started our thirty minutes of reading a day while at work yesterday..thank you @Syndee_Sue for that one. I can barely put my book down by @jbretzmann and his team. I am already coming up with some great ideas to try with the staff #personalizedpd
