#edchatPH Morning from #Melbourne here. Another drizzly day, seems like we are getting winter this year. @skymazef3 popping in and out as I have an #auslan (sign language) tour to go on. #teacherlife
A1 I believe Teaching is a skill and talent. For me, I remember teaching my stuffed animals while I grew up. As educators, our skills need to be polished and refined by different skill sets too. Clear as mud? #edchatPH
#edchatPH a1 Looked up talent and it defined as a "natural skill". One of the smartest things I have done is find people to be ying to my yang and so all our skills add tremendously to our teaching, rather than my teaching. I amn't talented, I know how to promote it. @skymazef3
A1: I think it’s both art and science. Some may have more instinct for it than others, but a dedicated learner committed to perfect practice can get exponentially better. #edchatPH
A1: As an Instructional Coach I def think there are skills that must be learned and practiced. However some find certain skills easier based on their talents! 😍Discovering the combination that works for you is the art of teaching! #EdChatPh

A1: I tend to think that the 'teaching talent' is inherent in anyone who might have the inclination to pass on a knowledge/a skill. Talent is usually developed through constant practice & after having learned the skill. #edchatPH
#edchatph a2 What makes a good teacher is a bit like what makes a good recipe. Depends on what you need. Still think understanding pedagogy, knowing your area and good relationships are a must though @skymazef3
A1: I think regardless of skill or talent, teaching is a calling. Skill is learned. And talent is potential that needs to be honed. A teacher will have both, but their attitude and commitment will depend on whether this is a calling for them or just a job. #edchatPH
A2 What a loaded question. To me, a good teacher has flexibility, supports all students, celebrates the students and staff, and, above all, has the heart to lead, listen, and guide. #edchatPH
A1: I agree with @Dale_Chu! Both a talent and a skill. You can’t improve w/o correct practices, but at the same time it can be instinctive & creative. #edchatph
A2: Magic...hardwork...firm boundaries between home and work...excellent literacy skills...strong people skills...love for students...patience...persistence...compassion...dedication...self-care. #edchatph

A2: Someone who recognizes when her students are being used as political pawns and chooses to protect the students (which is a privilege, so those who can speak up, should!). #edchatph
A2: So many ingredients of what makes a good T. Overall, the right combi of these: solid knowledge of pedagogy, being consistent, fair, and kind. Looking at the whole S, not just having the right academic abilities, but able to develop + attitudes towards learning. #edchatph
Agree. If we aren't interested in learning and growing, I would think it would be much harder to inspire students to put forth the effort to learn and grow. #edchatPH

For me, it's about finding what is fulfilling. Understanding the needs of our Ss, learning from them and from our peers. We can't fix our past, but we can lay the foundations for a great future. #edchatPH

I don't know, I wish I'd known more about the history of legislation and education and educational law before I started teaching (not an edu maj in undergrad). Found them incredibly useful! #edchatPH
#edchatPH First and foremost it’s all about building a connection with your students and seeing them as individuals. Both teacher and students are learners in a classroom. It’s a mutual relationship. I’ve learnt so much this academic year through my Ss!
A2: If I had to choose the attributes that make a great teacher I would say #EdChatPh they possess a love for people, learning, high standards, and a desire to reach ALL learners!
We have to be patient in modeling and encouranging them. Always be willing to share what you know. We empower others by being there to inspire them that it's not too late. #edchatPH 🇵🇭
A2: Many things make a good teacher. Personally I would look for traits that show aptitude, expertise, empathy, and a genuine love for learning. :o) #edchatPH#education#teaching
Oooo, I get you. I am super happy I taught for 5 yrs and then got my master's. So much of that info only makes sense *after* one's been in the trenches! #edchatPH
A3 My school and district does a great job educating both the staff and teachers. Modeling, guiding, and inquiring to give students the best daily. #edchatPH
A2: Lifelong learning is the mark of a good teacher. Someone who strives to constantly improve and who knows that it's all about the Ss, not themselves. A good teacher will always work to be a great teacher. #edchatPH
Two years ago I taught more #ELLs than ever before; I realized I needed more skills to support them. I spent the last year getting my #ESL endorsement and added to my teacher toolbox. #edchatPH
Building trust is where it begins and is probably the biggest challenge. I think it helps to identify emotions like fear and pride as roadblocks to overcome. And to point toward the goal of productive joy.#EdChatPh
A3: My coor is always willing to sit down & teach me as I came in clueless. But I always tell her “I don’t know this” or “Can you help me with...” I think it goes both ways. The T must be willing to learn & ask for the training. The school must be willing to give. #edchatph
A3 Getting there.... We are moving towards building learning communities. Also we need to provide TIME for collaboration and a time to breathe. #edchatPH
A3: We went through @KaganOnline training as a whole school; when all teachers buy-in, it works really well! School saw a need (lack of engagement) and then found training. #edchatph
A3: As an Instructional Coach I mentor new teachers at my high school. #EdChatPh Part of my job is to provide PD and support to the entire faculty, but new teachers need more attention at the beginning of the year!
One barrier to minimal supervision is the need for ongoing professional development. If Ts don't have time to keep up with changes in their profession, I think it would be unwise to just let them run with what they see in their classrooms. #edchatph

a3 Some of the math teachers have been piloting inquiry learning. We are learning to teach in a way that students are deeply engaged in the learning journey. We're getting some fabulous PD to help with it. #edchatPH
A4: So many. But my Grade 4 Science teacher holds a special place for me, Mrs. Legaspi. She is my shining example of what it means to be an inspiring teacher. #edchatPH
A4 I had so many supporters along the way. Mrs. Carter in fourth grade, Mrs. Hickman in high school, & many college profs who are friends to this day. I am continuously supported to this day by my PLN and family. #edchatPH
That's a lot to think about. What does it mean to be "best?" Relationships? Ability to explain? Asking the best questions? Motivating study skills?... Who is this person? #EdChatPh
A4 A growing list- Toy Estrera, Claire De Leon-Carillo, Nick Galvez, Emily Batin, Ernie Grio, Mike Rapatan, and members of the Teacher Education Network. I owe a lot from you. #edchatPH
Have you told her that? It’s so nice when Ss come back & tell you how they have changed your life. Have been treated to dinner by a S. Talk about full circle! #edchatph
A4: I also learned from my elementary librarian that kids will happily help with mundane tasks when you point out their talents will be on display. I was a super fast typist; I converted card catalog to digital. Now, I seek out kids to create classroom bulletin boards! #edchatph
A4: The teacher I interned with! Her name is Betsy Touchton and she was wonderful! Many of our new Ts have never been a student teacher. This was such important training for me as an educator!! #EdChatPh
Exactly! If a group of teachers is collaborating positively, each person brings her/his best to the table in order to bring out the best in others! #edchatPH
Oh yes! When me and the team conducted Google training all over the country for DepEd, she was already in the Division office of Pampanga and was so surprised to see me there. #proudestmoment#edchatPH
Thanks a lot for the wonderful chat. May you continue to grow i your profession from Good to Great. Follow each other! Thanks @_marymanzano and @superchockster. #edchatPH
Good question. Sometimes, I think Ts would buy in more if new strategies were given a timeline: try this for one semester, all-in, and then we'll evaluate. #edchatPH
