The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
I'm an educational consultant and virtual coach for instructional coaches and school leaders. My success this week - watching my own learning. I've decided to tackle a goal to learn to crochet. It has been an interesting process. Finished a dish rag and scrubber. #educoach
Hi! Lauren, Instructional Coach, Indiana. Always a pleasure to co-moderate #educoach and looking forward to tonight’s discussion as we dive into our book study! My #eduwin is PLC leadership team mtg today in our building and getting ready for two @CLCoachIND events next week!!
A reminder - Chapter 1 is free on the @ascd website. The first 4 questions will address ideas from chapter 1. You can take a quick skim if you haven’t read in order to add your thoughts to our global room! https://t.co/ugI1Wpm0Kr#educoach
Q1 The authors address two important numbers right off the bat: 100 and n + 1. How do those numbers live in your professional world? What is the difference between them? Does one cast more influence over your work than the other? #educoach
Q1 I believe all kids learn - all 100% of them. It can be a challenge helping them crack their learning code - but we owe it to them. Period. #educoach
A2 "Start small and act intentionally." p. 8 This resonates with me because if you are biased towards action, it highlights the need for crafting intention and being thoughtful about the scope of your actions. #educoach#coachingconversations#masscuecc
A1 The focus of the numbers is different. 100 refers to students and n+1 refers to self. I think my district typically sets "realistic percentage goals" even though 100 makes sense. #educoach
Q2 @educationhall & @AlisaSimeral state "Teacher quality—and quality instruction—is the #1 determinant of student success." Do you agree with that statement? To what degree? #educoach
My #eduwin was a recent 2-day workshop in Council Bluffs Lewis Central schools with a trainer from @jimknight99 on Coaching with Impact. Loved it! #educoach
I agree. Hard to sell to admin also. If we fall short, then what? We report we didn't meet the goal. Not a failure if we set the right goals. #educoach
Just like @KathyPerret said, n + 1 is the idea that anyone at anytime can grow which is a core belief of mine as a coach. 100% effort by teachers would be more appealing than 100% student learning all the time. I hope that makes sense #educoach
A2 I agree with the statement in theory. I struggle with balancing that concept with the reality of the background students bring with them. Of the items in my control, I would agree teacher quality is important! #educoach
As Ts dig into what works for their students, reflect on those practices, plan for continued learning opportunities - growth happens. 100% doesn't have to equate to 100% reaching a standard or benchmark, test score all at the same time. But all 100% of them can LEARN. #educoach
Q3 Think for a few moments about the last professional development experience you participated in or provided for your teachers. To what extent did that experience meet the following four characteristics (identified by @FredEnde), and—very importantly—how do you know? #educoach
Yes! They can all learn from where they are currently. They will not all reach the same standards at the same time, but they will grow... and that equates to 100% learning! #educoach
A3b: the work was meaningful and long-lasting because she equipped us with structures and procedures that we can fall back on and make into habits #educoach
A3 Honestly, most are not deep in teacher ownership. This is definitely an area that I want to develop more...so any suggestions or direction would be appreciated!
#educoach
A2 I focus on all 4. I'm not perfect and reflect, learn and grow. Lately I've been paying attention to #3 and #4. PD participants need opportunities to form their own learning to make a impact rather than being told what to do (from my vantage point). #educoach
I know for me, specifically, because I think about what I learned on a daily basis. Especially the part about coach roles, paraphrasing, and the structure of PLCs. I’ve also seen results when working with teachers #educoach

We also have done specific sessions determined ahead of time. Has worked well both ways. Staff engages in more discussion and has a more positive outlook. #educoach
Q4: We know teacher quality matters. Does your time, energy, & resources on an average day positively affect the professional practice of the Ts you work? How might you do that more intentionally and shift the balance of your efforts to tip the scales in that direction? #educoach
I love this quote: “the difference between learning a skill and being able to implement it effectively resides in our capacity to engage in deep, continuous, rigorous thought about that skill.” #educoach
A4: I'm thinking that I need to make 1:1 chats happen regarding the PD topic. Ask Ts what they think, if they might use the skills covered -- and could I HELP? #educoach
A4 This summer I've been on the hunt for a planner to better document my work and strive for intentionality. Haven't landed on my system yet. Piecing it together! #educoach
A4 I loved the differentiated suggestions on how to support teachers in their reflection based on how they reflect...and letting the teacher reflect. #educoach
The first questions is what do the kids need. The professional learning follows. The goal of coaching is the ongoing, embedded professional learning, not just PD session. Coaching 1:1, small teams, etc... is all part of the big picture. #educoach
Q5: To what extent has your professional preparation and experience addressed the value of self-reflection? To what extent are you aware of your own reflective tendencies, habits, behaviors, and thoughts? #educoach
Much of professional learning takes us to the first stage - imitative use. Then schools tend to move on. We need to take time to get to the other stages. Case in point. If I stop crocheting now I'm only going to have dish rags with two stitches. #educoach Image (Joyce & Showers)
As I read through the book, I realized that the position in which I grew the most as a teacher, was when I had a team of teachers that spent time reflecting, and participating in "teacher talking". #educoach
Not sure if u have access to a laptop, but I went totally digital this ur with calendars and self reflection/note taking in #MicrosoftOneNote this way I can add to it where ever I am and I never run out of ‘pages’! #educoach

A5 Reflection on my classroom happens almost automatically. I am constantly striving to do better. However, I am probably blind to many of my habits and behaviors, especially ones that are comfortable but not beneficial. #educoach
Q6: @educationhall & @AlisaSimeral cite J. Dewey at the start of ch. 2 “It’s not the doing that matters; it’s the thinking about the doing.” The way we think & reflect on our practices determines the effectiveness of our actions. How does this apply to your work as an #educoach?
A5 I think I've been a reflective educator by nature. I've had some awesome mentors along the way. I don't think my reflective stance came from coursework. Mentors and coaches saw things in me that I didn't see myself. Now I try to do the same. #educoach
Self-awareness grows us as coaches and the human side of change. We have to be able to look inward and reflect on where we are individually to be able to best support those around us. #educoach
Yes - safety is such a huge factor. I know that has come up a lot in my virtual coaching. Since I'm not a part of the school - and usually far a way - coaches & school leaders fill safe in opening up and moving to deep reflection. #educoach
A4: I like to think I tip the scale in a positive direction with teachers. I’ve been working more on asking reflective questions and really trying to listen without judgment #educoach
Hey all! Just discovered this chat. 100 is what we need to be giving our Ss everyday and n+1 means that when I’m learning something to try to raise up a new leader as well. #educoach
Q1 The authors address two important numbers right off the bat: 100 and n + 1. How do those numbers live in your professional world? What is the difference between them? Does one cast more influence over your work than the other? #educoach
This is why I encourage Ts during coaching convo to have their Ss reflect on the lessons that the T taught... this way the T sees their teaching through diff lenses #educoach
A5 Reflection on my classroom happens almost automatically. I am constantly striving to do better. However, I am probably blind to many of my habits and behaviors, especially ones that are comfortable but not beneficial. #educoach
A6 I sometimes shake my head at quotes from Dewey and a like ... thinking we had great thoughts like that ... yet here we are. Why? Why haven't we truly embraced thoughts like this in education? #educoach
A6 I am going in to my 10th year as a literacy coach in my district. I believe that my reflection helps me to grow as a coach, but also change in the ways that I support our teachers. I am always asking myself, " What can I do better?"
#educoach
Yes! I believe that the relationship a teacher has with a student, as well as a teacher's knowledge, are factors in student success. Students with limited knowledge on theories and practice with have limited ability to help every student. #educoach
In reply to
@KathyPerret, @educationhall, @AlisaSimeral
A6: Maybe it means to try to find out the thinking of the instructional practice. If I believe that AP kids are smarter than Ss not in AP courses, that taints how I teach everything.
That's an awesome idea. I found a cool app. I'll have to look for it. It actually analyzes your words - like positive thoughts, etc... #educoach I'll look after the chat.
Q2 @educationhall & @AlisaSimeral state "Teacher quality—and quality instruction—is the #1 determinant of student success." Do you agree with that statement? To what degree? #educoach
A5: Training as a Reading Recovery teacher helped me development my reflective practice. "What is it I need to do to help this S move forward?" daily plan question #educoach
Q8: Think about your responses to Q7. Synthesize the lists and quantify the role of self-reflection in those teachers' skill sets, how reflective were these individuals? Can you tell? What makes you think so? #educoach
Yes - safety is such a huge factor. I know that has come up a lot in my virtual coaching. Since I'm not a part of the school - and usually far a way - coaches & school leaders fill safe in opening up and moving to deep reflection. #educoach

*how they build relationships *how prepared they r for the day/week *how enthusiastic they r about just coming to work *how organized they keep their learning environment *If they seek out their own leaning *Do they reflected on their daily practices #educoach
Q9 The Reflective Cycle (see image) is the predictable pattern of thinking we all go through as we progress toward expertise. Are you cognizant of your own thinking as you grow and learn? What do you know about your own learning cycle (personal or professional) #educoach
A7: Warm demander, uses an economy of language, sense of Vegas in classroom, can name Ss strengths and next steps as a learner, and has a sense of urgency with standards-focused instruction and Ss like them. #educoach
