#Edchat is a hashtag, a movement—it is a weekly organized Twitter discussion of educators and people interested in education that meet virtually from all over the world. #Edchat serves as a conversation thread on Twitter and is also used for organized weekly discussions.
In NY student teachers do a 10 week stint in a high school and a 10 week stint in a middle school fo secondary education. I question whether that is enough. #Edchat
#Edchat sometimes #student#struggle is evidence that students are working through a problem. It could just as easily be viewed as #learning. Why are we so afraid of #struggle? Repeated frustration is not ok, but sometimes learning and thinking are hard work.
It's always difficult to accurately be forward looking. But it is critical that programs combine timeless teaching strategies with innovations. Thus pedagogy BEFORE technology. Slick initiatives w/o worthy goals will hurt students and teachers. #edchat
I currently have a HS student doing a work-based learning experience at my sch from 8-10 for the ENTIRE year! I said he’ll be the best prepared pre-service tchr EVER! #edchat

I would agree with that. With admin in classrooms infrequently, Ts are simply asked who will take a student-teacher. No real requirements, and not all Ts are good mentors. #Edchat

Teaching programs need timeless strategies. By timeless strategies I am referring to lesson design (objectives, modeling, inquiry, CFU, feedback, formative assessment), caring Ts, a balanced curriculum, teaching about democracy& citizenship,& eclectic teaching strategies #edchat
#edchat To be frank some I’ve interviewed but have not hired-I see a lack of pedagogical training instructional strategies-assessment knowledge and personal efficacy

I've not had student teachers, but my district has had Ts pursuing ESOL endorsement shadow me for a day. I've received no training in what to do. #Edchat
As a Education student I also believe that we should have a longer length of time in a class room with a good mentor. It would make the transition into teaching easier and less stressful for both the new teachers and their students #edchat
Also, it is critical that teaching programs honestly strive to select the best teachers to serve as cooperating mentor teachers. Mentors are very powerful, they help student teachers develop good habits, first impressions really do count. #edchat
Anna I think it’s vital that classroom experiences happen from the getgo and often. Too many Ss get too far in and figure out education isn’t their niche and feel trapped by completed course work. #edchat
One way we do this @ShiftParadigm is to focus more on the process; looking for where they are at in working through the prob. What strats they are using. Asking them to identify what they are "stuck" on. Seeking feedback. Understanding progress sometimes takes time. #edchat

I student taught for one quarter, and that is definitely too short. I think it would be ideal for a year, so pre-service teachers see the full year to have a clearer picture of expectations. #Edchat
#edchat
A2: very dependent on the quality/skills of the mentor. If a principal likes compliant classrooms and pairs a st.teacher with their star..... well that’s a problem
Had a student today, in a huff of polyatomic ion-induced frustration day “Mr., why do you like chemistry?!?” I replied “because it’s like a big puzzle to solve!” 😊👍🏻 #ilovechemistry#edchat@DohertySpartans
On the flip side, however, it is asking a lot to student teach for a full year. I worked in college. It wouldn't have been possible to student-teach and work part-time, too. #Edchat
Great point. But we are not totally dependent on technology. Let's begin with effective teaching strategies, a balanced curriculum, caring teachers, striving for diversity, a love of all students, relationships, a love of ideas, and high expectations for all S & T. #edchat#ASCD
It truly hurt my heart to see how HIGH these shapes were in a toddler room? Instantly, I encouraged the teacher to place them at the child's eye level...look at the difference? #edchat#EarlyChildhood#toddler

As a student teacher myself, I am learning a great deal about the individual student and how to meet THEIR needs. As teachers we cannot get caught up in "who's right and who's wrong", rather we must keep the student as our focal point. #edchat

#edchat Possibly- but it can be a bigger issue- mission and vision of the division- if the division hires principals in line with the vision( assuming it is student focused and inclusive) then probably not
Student teachers can learn from everyone. They can learn from the students, from their peers, from their paired teacher, and from themselves. There is no better place to learn than in a classroom. #edchat

It's important to remember that for most professions time in the field is the key. We learn only so much in classrooms (e.g, education, law, business). It's estimated that we learn about 80% of how to succeed in the field. #edchat

Great point. We need a balance. Student teachers need to learn technique, and how to motivate students. It takes years to get it right (do we ever?). Passion, a love of students, a love of learning & subject matter, r "feelings" that S in classes pick up on, then engage. #edchat

Little to no training that I’ve heard of. When you think about it mentors and mentees need support to bring out the best in each one. How will they know they are mentoring well if there’s no target 🎯 or no look-for training? #edchat#mentoring
I recently spoke to a superintendent from Arizona who told me that her state is considering recruiting teachers right from HS to meet the teacher shortage. #Edchat
Are Student teachers reqs and training different from State to State? In ALberta we have practicum hours that must be met but each program (Universities) is a little different #edchat
@tomwhitby most people in any profession I know feel that way. Is that surprising given what we know about how theoretical knowledge is consolidated in practice? #edchat
The compensation is never enough; the reward make not come until years later when one hears that their former student teacher is doing a great job. It is a reality of our profession. #edchat
#Edchat It may be haphazard in some schools / teacher prep programs, but not all! We painstakingly match students with teachers and schools and depend on our relationships and partnerships to help us make the best placements.
It's not, and the mentor has to go back and re-teach lessons. Not the best use of anyone's time. Not sure she will "pass" S/T, though, if no improvement. #Edchat
