A weekly chat covering topics related to teaching with a global perspective. A rotating cast of guest hosts include education experts and influencers. A must-follow for all educators who would like to open their classroom to global opportunities! Hosted by @HSingmaster and sponsored by @AsiaSocietyEDU
Welcome to #GlobalEdChat! We can't wait to learn how you build a culture of #globaled. We'll be using the Q/A format tonight, but let's start with an icebreaker! Share your proudest #globaled moment #globaled18
I'm Heather Singmaster, Director at the Center for Global Education @AsiaSocietyEDU and the #globaledchat organizer. I'm tweeting from home in Portland, Oregon today! #globaled18
Hi everyone! Mark here tweeting in from Austin, Texas. Former #Elementary teacher and now a curriculum designer @PenpalSchools! Excited to learn with you all tonight! #GlobalEdCHat
John from Mexico City where I lead an international American school. We host an international day where we highlight our Ss who come from 48 countries around the world #WesthillDay#WeAreWesthill#Globaledchat
Joe Rodriguez 5th Grade Teacher from Los Angeles @ASGEatRFK checking in as I walk into my home. Looking forward to an awesome chat! #globaledchat#globaled18
Hi all, Lottie, here in Melbourne. Now working at a Chinese language ed company, but also do a bit of consultancy. Proudest moment? In my previous role, International School in BJ, our international fair, food, clothing, arts and crafts from all over the world #globaledchat
One of my proudest #GLobalEd moments was sharing poetry from around the world with my third grade students. There are so many inspiring voices out there! #GlobalEdChat#GlobalEd18
#globaledchat#globaled18 A1 My personal proudest #globaled moment is each time my Ss and I interact with authentic audiences collaborating on PBL and PD that focus on student voice , choice and agency from a global perspective.
The main focus of my methods course in college right now is global education and how to implement it in my future classroom. I think considering multiple perspectives is a good place to start. #globaledchat#globaled18
A1 I don't teach in classrooms, but in my library we have students asking for books about their cultures so they can understand themselves more in able to understand others #Globaledchat
I know, right @hsingmaster#Globaledchat Mine's not mine, but Denver Center for International Studies fight with conservative legislators to allow international flags back in 2006. Huge win!
#Globaledchat A1 For us, it is visiting with classes throughout the US and the world. Last year we visited 10 different countries. This year we made a visit to Alberta Canada 🇨🇦. Our 6th Grade is currently studying that area of the world. Ss are engaged in these lessons.
#globaledchat#globaled18 A1 Global education is a tranverse topic that sets my ESL students' communications skills in action through Pen Pal projects and global events.
A1: We read books, short stories and poems from other cultures and try to put ourselves in the characters' shoes. We discuss perspectives other than our own and try to travel through our reading. #Globaledchat
#globaled18#GlobalEdChat hi Jessica. I work across a few schools mentoring early career teachers particularly in restorative practices and driving school community partnerships!
OH librarians are beyond instrumental in building a culture of #globaled in classrooms! I know so many Ts who would never have gone global without their librarian! 🙏 #globaledchat#globaled18
A1: #GlobalEd looked differently across the elementary school from Ts using basic maps and globes, to Ss finding places on @youtube & @googleearth, to bringing current events and news into instructional materials. #globaledchat
#Globaledchat A1 Last year we did 2 cultural conversations. One with a class in Argentina 🇦🇷 over gender inequality and one with a class in Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽 over current events. We put together questions and responded. Learned to agree to disagree.
A1. So many things...focus on global competencies (Investigate, see perspectives, communicate, take action), guest speakers, cooking, penpals, online projects with overseas counterparts, and a wicked lot of SDGs stuff. #globaledchat
A1 Suitable resources available for Ss, drawing on Ss own experiences and local community resources, projects/topics that provide opportunity for self directed research and critical thinking and opp to building a range of 'soft-skills' #globaledchat
Q2: How can you include parents in global education? What are the best ways to communicate with them about the #Globaled projects happening in your classroom? #Globaledchat#globaled18
Agreed, through reading we can travel the world. Read Alouds are great. I am looking forward to participating in The Global Read Aloud this year. We are reading Amal Unbound. #gra18#globaledchat#globaled18
A1: We read books, short stories and poems from other cultures and try to put ourselves in the characters' shoes. We discuss perspectives other than our own and try to travel through our reading. #Globaledchat
A2: As a parent, I read all communication from my son's teachers - both email and paper. It would be great to have @Flipgrid or another tech tool to allow us to see the projects. I also love going in to visit and see presentations in person when invited! #globaledchat#globaled18
Q2, providing communication to parents on collaborative projects that everyone can access from home, quite possible in today's 'digital' world #globaledchat
#globaled18#globaledchat A1 global education in the classroom can have lots of different aspects- young people learning from others anywhere else on the globe and teaching others anywhere else too is one stream
Yes, Amal Unbound! I've been hearing a LOT about the Global Read Aloud this year bc teachers are planning to participate in our VR Field Trip to Pakistan project while they read that book. #globaledchat#globaled18
A1: I am an ELL teacher whose taught in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Vietnam. For me, global ed means connecting my students to my community and my community to my students and their life experiences #globaledchat#globaled18
A2: I always include a global education projects table in our "Celebration of Learning Week" These are our student led conferences in the Fall and then again in the Spring #globaledchat#globaled18
Absolutely @SueThotz ! National curricula dictate a perspective, but once you transgress boundaries, there are perspectives that question that. Parents, esp. are often uncomfortable with this. #globaledchat
A2. Growing up in small town central Illinois, my mom was one of few immigrants in town. She was the one woman global ed show at my school every year. How many of your parents can you bring in and involve? #GlobalEdChat
A2: Especially for students who have immigrant parents, having students talk to their parents about their heritage and share it with the class. This could be very interesting, especially if your classroom is diverse. #globaledchat#globaled18
#Globaledchat A2 We use Facebook & Twitter to show what is happening in our classrooms. Our teachers do a great job of taking pictures or inviting me in. Great opportunity for our parents and community to see the great things happening at North White.
Q2: How can you include parents in global education? What are the best ways to communicate with them about the #Globaled projects happening in your classroom? #Globaledchat#globaled18
Love this answer! Focusing on global competencies can happen every single day. When you bring global connections into your classroom, Ss are often more prepared for a great exchange. #globaledchat#globaled18
I agree and do the same with my children. The home to school connection is so important to bridge learning and continue the conversation. #globaledchat#globaled18
Yes - uncertainty means letting go of control, which can be scary, but it also means forcing Ts to open their minds and learn too - which can also be scary, but our Ss do it every day! #globaledchat#globaled18
#globaled18#globaledchat A2 seesaw and storypark are great tools to connect learning at home and in the classroom. Family engagement in a child,s learning is crucial.
A project one of the teacher does is called "An Immigrant Profile" Where students interview their parents and learn about their experience coming to the US. In my class that would be 28 of the 30 SS. I have. #globaledchat#globaled18
A2: I always include a global education projects table in our "Celebration of Learning Week" These are our student led conferences in the Fall and then again in the Spring #globaledchat#globaled18
We teachers like to at least pretend we have control. 😉 Whenever I do an activity that may lead me into the unknown, I get nervous. Trying to be zen about it and invite it more often. #globaledchat
LOVE THIS. One of the biggest pieces of feedback I hear from Ss about their @penpalschools experience is how much they learned about their own community. Connecting with other parts of the world helps us to better see the world immediately around us. #globaledchat#globaled18
Retired now after 35 years, still consulting, coaching, blogging and podcasting ... just on my own schedule :) What do you teach? #globaledchat#globaled18
A2. It's imperative that we get kids out into their communities to take action and showcase their global learning. Parents love this stuff. #globaledchat
A3: I've been talking with one teacher who is building a #globaled PLN this year. His principal asked him to based on the good #Globaled work he has already been doing. The plan is to meet monthly and start by defining global competence for their school. #Globaledchat#globaled18
Yes, but having control doesn't mean having the answers @SueThotz#globaledchat. It means maintaining the courage and composure to lead inquiries that allow students to find their own way in the world.
We teachers like to at least pretend we have control. 😉 Whenever I do an activity that may lead me into the unknown, I get nervous. Trying to be zen about it and invite it more often. #globaledchat
Yeah it's a bit much on the nerves to venture into the unknown on a daily basis, but reinforcing cultural competencies when you do have control can help! Also, learning with a friend and stepping into the unknown together (Q3!) #globaledchat#globaled18
A3: Some schools do a "Model U.N.". I've only seen this at the elementary level, but perhaps it could be done at the secondary level as well. Perhaps organizing that with other teachers to make it a school-wide event is one way to collaborate. #globaledchat#globaled18
A3: Create a space for learning for students where that learning isn’t siloed by subjects. Help students to explore global issues across teams as an interdisciplinary project. #globaledchat
#globaledchat#globaled18 A3 By participating in global events and PBL taking all areas into account to foster 21st Century Skills through Design Thinking Skills and Universal Learning Design.
I love the idea of inviting immigrant parents into the classroom to share their experiences. Many parents feel so proud of their culture and love to share. Invitations to share at school also help demonstrate respect. #GlobalEdChat
YES! This is a project option in Immigration in the 21st Century from @PenpalSchools - students even find out about their grandparents/great grandparents immigrant stories that they never knew about. #globaledchat#globaled18
In reply to
@edtechjoe, @jgringer96, @PenpalSchools
#Globaledchat A3 Today, Mrs. Housinger’s 4th Grade class visit with smokejumper Jarret Carle from Oregon. Ss emailed him and wrote questions. Wanted to learn more after reading “Smokejumper “ by Laura Johnson. He gave them a toy of the base. Great learning activity!
A3: Great question @PenpalSchools ! #globaledchat doesn't happen alone, here or in your classroom! Start by finding allies in your building/department, and seek global connections together!
A3: You can create cross-curricular opportunities to explore geographic regions and cultures. You can find connections for global novels or short stories to use in any class. #globaledchat
I was talking to a teacher last month and saw an obvious opportunity for @EmpaticoOrg or @PenpalSchools use. All it took was a bit of encouragement and a shove in the right direction. Go in and model if necessary. #GlobalEdChat
A3: At my school we dedicate one planning hour a month to global education projects. Each grade level plans a collaborative project. My challenge is getting fellow teachers to go beyond our school and make global connections with their Ss. #globaled18#globaledchat
A3. I've found that leading by example as a global educator has led to many questions from my colleagues in my building. They're slowly warming up to the idea. #globaledchat
Model UN is alive and well at all education levels @jgringer96! Coached it for years at secondary, but also know of college and graduate level teams #globaledchat
A3: Some schools do a "Model U.N.". I've only seen this at the elementary level, but perhaps it could be done at the secondary level as well. Perhaps organizing that with other teachers to make it a school-wide event is one way to collaborate. #globaledchat#globaled18
Yes! One of my most favorite projects when I taught history was the immigration project. Ss would interview their family and would sometimes learn for the first time why their family came to the US! #globaledchathttps://t.co/jKbgcO1pZP
#globaled18#globaledchat A3 I have participated in a number of study tours and school walks locally, nationally and internationally with teams of teachers. There are great things happening everywhere and new learnings often translate locally with teacher teams
A3: I'm so much more comfortable trying new things with a "running buddy." I couldn't imagine trying global connections or new technology in the classroom without the support of the Ts in my PLC! #GlobalEdChat#GlobalEd18
@hsingmaster Building a global PLN is an important step in the process. There are lots of educators not "here" yet, so lots to promote, share, and model. #globaledchat#globaled18
A3: I've been talking with one teacher who is building a #globaled PLN this year. His principal asked him to based on the good #Globaled work he has already been doing. The plan is to meet monthly and start by defining global competence for their school. #Globaledchat#globaled18
Q3. I've found the key is PD, starting with the 'why' is important, then supporting that with the 'how'.. some educators are still realising the importance of the global perspective, but once they understand it, they're usually sold! #globaledchat
A4: If possible, encourage the district to be open to foreign exchange students if it is not already. Even simpler than that, maybe encourage a type of pen-pal program for students of all grade-levels. #globaledchat#globaled18
A4: I think it's important that teachers (and students!), reach out to leadership and let them know what they are already doing with #globaled in their classrooms and how it supports teaching to standards (they will want to know that right?). #globaledchat#globaled18
A4: Invite them into your classroom during discussions and activities related to the global activities. Ask them if they have experience with global education. If they do, have them come in and present to the class. #globaledchat
A4: My experience says build it in a school first, THEN reach out to District, unless of course District reaches out to you #globaledchat. District always wants to see "what it looks like."
I use their own word “against” them. It is often written into the mission and vision statements of schools and districts. When it is stated as a district priority, show them how they can develop the skills toward global citizenship in the every day classroom. #GlobalEdChat
A3. I've led teacher 'study tours' abroad, which enable them to feel much more empowered to go back and share their learnings with their staff. These also provide opp for T's to building their own international PLNs with local teachers in other countries #Globaledchat
#globaled18#globaledchat A3 I have participated in a number of study tours and school walks locally, nationally and internationally with teams of teachers. There are great things happening everywhere and new learnings often translate locally with teacher teams
A4: Sometimes you just need to do it first and then share the successes to build the support. Build from the ground up. Find your allies and go for it! #globaledchat
A4: I think tying #GlobalEd to assessment and academic standards is one way to get admin support. A lot of admin don't think about how many rigorous skills can be supported through global ed. #GlobalEdChat#GlobalEd18
A4. Definitely don't wait for "permission" to get global. Just do it. (and then let everyone see the impact of the cool stuff you and your kids are doing.) #globaledchat
A4: As a school leader.. (as I retire from teaching in a few years) I would showcase my school and network with other district leaders about the importance of Global Education. #globaledchat#globaled18
Hi #globaledchat! Besides making the case for long term, career enhancing impact of #globalcompetence, SHOW how readily accessible & purpose-filled (motivating) #globaled curric + #pbl can be. This PLN can help you w examples!
Q2: How can you include parents in global education? What are the best ways to communicate with them about the #Globaled projects happening in your classroom? #Globaledchat#globaled18
A3, this is a question I think about constantly. Establishing global connections for our students is so important, so I try to help teachers see the benefits of "going global" by finding collaborative projects between our classes and other countries. #globaledchat
I use their own word “against” them. It is often written into the mission and vision statements of schools and districts. When it is stated as a district priority, show them how they can develop the skills toward global citizenship in the every day classroom. #GlobalEdChat
A5: Community partners have a lot of resources to share beyond money! Guest speakers, field trip destinations, authentic audiences for project presentations...to name a few! #globaledchat#globaled18
A3: At @MNSUMankato, the Study Abroad and Away department encourages faculty-led study abroad tours. Many programs across campus are involved! #globaledchat#globaled18
A5: Community partners have a lot of resources to share beyond money! Guest speakers, field trip destinations, authentic audiences for project presentations...to name a few! #globaledchat#globaled18
A5: When school stakeholders see that community members and businesses not only support global education, but are active participants in it, they too will become interested and involved. #globaledchat
It’s the way that I convince districts that they should teach digital citizenship and media literacy. I start out every presentation with their mission statement and highlight connections. #globaledchat
A5: I have partnered with local nonprofits doing international work to show my students the impact they can have. I got so involved with one @ablfk_ghana that I now sit on the Board and visited Ghana this last spring! #globaledchat
A5: Even here in Iowa, small towns can have immigrant communities. Encouraging students to talk to them and maybe even inviting them into class (or the school as a whole) is a great way to increase knowledge. Strong communities = stong schools! #globaledchat#globaled18
A5: There are so many international businesses here in Austin. From immigrant run local businesses to global corporations with offices here, there are so many examples of why global citizenship matters! #GlobalEdChat#GlobalEd18
A3: As an ELL teacher, I also try to collaborate with content area teachers to highlight global connections to their specific fields #globaledchat#globaled18
#globaledchat#globaled18 A5 By sharing goals, interests ,PD training, DT, planning and assessment that consider global learning a dimension to develop 21st Century skills in action.
Students, Teachers, Families that are engaged in the teaching and learning of the school. Where we find ways to investigate the world, Share Ideas, Weigh Perspectives , and take action. Near and Far.. Around the block and around the world. #globaledchat#globaled18
#globaledchat A5 Our 2 local newspapers have been great. They have been in our buildings covering these events. Lots of compliments from members of the community.
A5: Community partners have a lot of resources to share beyond money! Guest speakers, field trip destinations, authentic audiences for project presentations...to name a few! #globaledchat#globaled18
There’s a school in LA that combines their social justice program with tech and SEL. Ss select community orgs to create PSAs and media for. This could easily involve local orgs related to immigration and refugee services or cultural orgs. #globaledchat
My students have also gotten involved in the same organization by raising money, planning events, sponsoring hens, and becoming motivators for kids in Ghana. It’s been amazing to watch. We all can make a difference no matter how old we are! #globaledchat
Many of the area employers - corporations, universities, hospitals, nonprofits will have first-hand experience with benefits of #globaled that school boards, admins might not. Partnerships help make the case AND build accountability #globaledchat
I think inviting administration is huge. Not only do they get to see how much the students gain from the experience, they can participate too. #Globaledchat
A5. Kids get to practice the concept of "glocal" by engaging and collaborating with their home communities first and then taking action both there and further afield. #globaledchat
YES! Industries have been globally connected & globally dependent for YEARS. DECADES! Connections to the community help to stress the importance of #globaled 🙏 #globaledchat#globaled18
A6: Since I have yet to finish my TEP, my experience is quite limited. I would say what I am learning now in my @UISocialStudies methods course is giving me a greater understanding of global ed. #globaledchat#globaled18
This example is and all girls independent school. Happy to send you more info. They are hosting a panel of international educators for us in October through the US state dept. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A6 @GooglePlus Connected Classrooms Workshop. Ts and their classes looking to connect in the US and across the World. This is what I use.
A6: Global connections on Twitter and other social media sites are ways to build connections for students. Once connections are made, we can Skype with other classrooms and experts anywhere in the world. #globaledchat
@we has been very helpful in giving resources for this work, as has @facinghistory, @ihmec and local nonprofits who are willing to come speak about their on the ground experiences. #globaledchat
A6: I like to frame "World Education" around common experiences and issues that affect the lives of my Ss. NOT looking to connect and check off on a map but rather build relationships with others near and far. Twitter and curating a PLN is step one #globaledchat#globaled18
A6 the incredible minds at @Proj_ARC support #PBL in school around the world. #PBL and #globaled are like ☕️+🍩 (PB+J is better, but no emojis for that) Great resource for expanding your #globaled practice+community partnerships! #Globaledchat#globaled18
A3 As a #PhysEd teacher it's important that I collaborate with my overseas peers to find new sports/activities to offer my students. I can teach the same skills using a 'global game' as I can with a traditional European/American offering #GlobalEdChat
Q7: What is one action you will take this semester to build a culture of global education among students, parents, colleagues, or administrators? #Globaledchat#globaled18
@WEMovement has been very helpful in giving resources for this work, as has @facinghistory, @ihmec and local nonprofits who are willing to come speak about their on the ground experiences. #globaledchat
A7: One action...#ditchthattextbook and build in time for my Ss to dive in deeper into Global Education. My Science and Social Studies is done mainly with #TeachSDGs resources found on the web. #globaledchat#globaled18
Once I graduate, or when I'm student teaching if I'm able to, I plan on focusing on the similarities between my students and other cultures first, then discuss differences. We'll see if that is the right way to go about it. #Globaledchat#globaled18
Q7: What is one action you will take this semester to build a culture of global education among students, parents, colleagues, or administrators? #Globaledchat#globaled18
#globaledchat A7 To continue to look for classes in countries we have not visited. I enjoyed seeing the reaction our Ss have speaking with their peers in other parts of the US and the World. I know some of our students will never get the opportunity to travel.
Thanks for the shout out. Global schools all over the world are moving to a more authentic, relevant, and complex way of co-designing learning experiences rather than a standardized approach to #PBL. #globaledchat
A6 the incredible minds at @Proj_ARC support #PBL in school around the world. #PBL and #globaled are like ☕️+🍩 (PB+J is better, but no emojis for that) Great resource for expanding your #globaled practice+community partnerships! #Globaledchat#globaled18
A7: We just reached out to @LoyolaChicago to work with them so our students can connect with professors and students doing the same work that they research during the freshmen World Repair Project! I’m excited to see what comes next! #globaledchat
YESSSS @edtechjoe you've been giving me life through this whole chat! connecting to tick off a map feels almost like looking at animals in a zoo. connect around experiences, to solve problems, to better understand issues. #globaledchat#globaled18
The fact that .@AsiaSocietyEDU has kept this and other publications as a free download has been a huge support/resource for so many educators around the world. 🙏🏽🙏🏽#globaledchat
Q7: What is one action you will take this semester to build a culture of global education among students, parents, colleagues, or administrators? #Globaledchat#globaled18
Q7: What is one action you will take this semester to build a culture of global education among students, parents, colleagues, or administrators? #Globaledchat#globaled18
A7: I am actively working to bring global poets into my classroom virtually to discuss poetry. Skype is banned in some countries like Dubai, but where there is a will, there is a way. #globaledchat
Thanks for joining us tonight! 🌎 If you're looking to expand your #globaled practices, make sure to check out PenPal Schools + sign up for a free project! 🙌#GlobalEdChat#GlobalEd18
#globaledchat#globaled18 A7 In October we´ll host an #HourofCode event for which I ask a student to help a relative get a diploma of participation and achievement in one or more of the courses and get his/her own.
Q7: What is one action you will take this semester to build a culture of global education among students, parents, colleagues, or administrators? #Globaledchat#globaled18
You've got to check out our poetry project. Great way to expose Ss to poets from different regions of the world + inspire them to write a lot of poetry. Like, more poetry than you ever thought they'd want to write.... https://t.co/VKqJav4xsJ#globaledchat#globaled18
