The Breakfast Club β #BFC530 β is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri β 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Wow, this is a tough one. My school has a policy not to assign group projects that need to be done outside school so that takes away that option. Interested to see the thoughts on this one. #bfc530
Hello Thursday and good morning friends! I am amazed, awed & inspired daily by the dedication of educators all around me ππ»#PLN πππ» #bfc530

Teachers have to constantly model it, but itβs even better when we create ways for them to practice those skills in real life. Hereβs how I did that this year with my students, in an activity called Agents of Kindness: https://t.co/QSjjfWVMAC#BFC530
Beyond our walls, most students are submerged in social media, gaming, and athletics. With that, digital citizenship and positive teamwork should be two focal points. #bfc530

Letting S's spend more F2F time interacting with each other in non-academic as well as academic ways. Playtime/recess/outside breaks or walks help S's physically & mentally. They allow for time for S's to bond on a human level with others.
#bfc530
Model & encourage. Teach kindness, empathy, teamwork, collaboration. Teach we are all different & still all beautiful & valuable. Teach we need others to make ourselves better. Hopefully this will build relationships outside of our school walls. #bfc530
#bfc530 We encourage #students to build relationships outside of #school by honoring what they do outside of school. Talk about sports, and theater, and music! Invite them to share their strengths!
Good morning #bfc530
We must model the behavior as in most things. I talk to my kids about my long term relationships. I talk to them about my teacher friends even ones from #Austraila that I chat with...etc:)
In our K class, we have established a take-home reading program. In January. Students bring home books they have come to read independently at school and share with parents. Reading, talking, celebrating, spending time together! #bfc530
I believe it is beneficial if these people have truly been teachers even for a short amount of time. I am much more concerned about the "experts" who have never been in a classroom like mine and have authority over teachers. #bfc530

More time in the school day needs to be given to unstructured time for student interaction. My students sit in groups & I dont give "do now"s when Im in hallway hoping they will talk w/each other #bfc530

Middle school perspective, there are lots of opportunities for students after school - sports, clubs, etc. Some kids get involved and some do nothing. We can help those students find an interest, peer group, place to hang... #bfc530
Good morning #BFC530. Luis from RI Iβm a HS ELL teacher. Students can participate in global projects, Mystery Skype interactions, or chat sessions. My ELS use the chat feature in Microsoft Teams to communicate with each other. I moderate it.
Is there a difference between
"connecting to" and "building relationships" with?
I struggle with and do many of things already mentioned here.
Is it enough? I wonder. I worry.
#bfc530
Since we are a middle school we no longer have recess. But at the end of every lunch we take kids outside for βwalk and talkβ around the school. #bfc530
Student relationships with who? With other students? #bfc530 I get the need to have the ability to work with other people but to place the stress of having relationship/friendship with other students as a definition of βsuccessβ is a bit of a stretch
Model.
Model.
Model.
Support students in activities beyond the classroom. Games. Plays. Concerts. School event.
All help build relationships when Ss see you in different lighting.
#bfc530
Working together tends to bring diverse ppl together. When I taught HS in CT, I gave a video group project that had to be completed outside of school. One parent said it was great to see kids at her house that she knew were not friends working together and laughing. #bfc530
Assist Ss in relationship building in and out of school. Allow Ss to recognize difference and affirm worth in class and apply value affirming practices for persons elsewhere. #bfc530
In reality, we are not friends with everyone, but we can be respectful with everyone. Just remember, a current acquaintance could have a larger role in your future. #bfc530
Truth! Especially in middle school, it's my kids biggest complaint. They only have 20 minutes for lunch! Then 20 for recess:(
Who can enjoy a meal & talk in 20 mins?

I'm a huge fan of @EmpaticoOrg for connecting classrooms & to #SparkEmpathy. They find the connection for your class, have activities & lesson plans for you to do together, and everything is done on the same website. You can see more and sign up at https://t.co/xrhU4AWLdT#BFC530

I always felt like the 5 minutes between classes was a really valuable time for middle school students. They can pack a lot of socializing into that time. #bfc530

I am so lucky that this is basically what I do - help kids find "their people". It takes time and an opportunity to count on each other. So, project based learning is a biggy. Encouraging and supporting cocurriculars, too #bfc530
This is something I always reminded my S's of. We don't have to be friends w/ everyone in our class but we do need to be respectful of all & be able to work with/get along with - platonically at least - everyone.
#bfc530
My #elemed always forgets abt the diversity of clubs available in ms & hs. I tend to filter ideas through the lens of limitations on that front. Maybe I need to rethink parameters and goals in terms of preparation for more optys later. #bfc530
Connect with classrooms around the world. Skype or Hangout with classrooms whose students are different in some way than yours are and then guide them to finding what they have in common. @EmpaticoOrg is excellent for this. *Hangs head for not using it more* #BFC530
#bfc530 Challenge Sβs to be joiners. Join clubs and activities that align with their interests. Invite Sβs to a club that you sponsor. Give Sβs an opportunity to speak about clubs, sporting events, teams in class and encourage those Sβs to extend an invitation to their peers.
Right! Im not saying bullying didnt exist when I was a kid, nor saying that recess is the "silver bullet", but isnt it interesting how bullying has increased while student time for unstructured interaction has decreased. I had an hour for lunch/recess thru 8th gr. #bfc530
Yes!
Best smiles ever when a S spots you in the audience at a play, sporting event, community event!
Creates great opening to discuss supporting/connecting with people outside of the 4 walls of school.

Responsive Classroom has an amazing book for middle school advisories that I highly recommend to help kids connect together!https://t.co/BA7CDeMuV5#bfc530
Yes! This is an incredibly important life and career skill. In their jobs they may have to work with people who they honestly don't like. Knowing how to be respectful will help them manage this.

That's fair. In my head, I was thinking beyond the school. How do we get Ss engaged in and with building relationships with others, specifically in a way that promotes community and a broader, better understanding of our world - or at least part of it. #bfc530
I've had a ton of people engage with me on sharing this opinion about rations and learning. I have advised them to cultivate their own PD and used this resource on how I do - https://t.co/LJbfmDEe4N. #bfc530#miched#edchat#edtech
Town I teach played town I live in basketball a few weeks ago. When my daughters & I walked into gym, some of the boys at end of the bench pointed at us w/smiles and waved #bfc530
One goal I have is to build a connection with a classroom and, over time, have kids collaborating to solve a common problem or problems. If that doesn't build empathy and relationships with others outside class, I'm not sure what will. #BFC530
Agree! Also consider school library as a bridge to help Ss become part of a bigger community! Book Clubs, MakerSpaces, Genius Bar, all provide Ss ways to have more social interaction with peers in F2F settings to build relationship skills. #bfc530

Great "seeing" you all again this morning!
Jumping out for now. Will try to return tomorrow!
Go forth & make a difference in somebody's life today. A smile, friendly word or helping hand can start a ripple of positivity & brighten someone's day. π

Even right through college. I cant even count the number of conversations I had with people as we walked the 10 minutes across campus to our next class. I remember not even realizing other people were around us #bfc530
I remember in a Sunday School class on relationships that Jesus had the 3, the 12, the 40, and the masses and had deeper relationships the less ppl were in the group but cared for all. I have used that idea for school and life #bfc530
Time in between classes also give students a chance to talk with teachers 1-1 or small group. Sometimes you can pack a whole lot of important talk in that small window of time. #bfc530
By creating a global community. Google maps and earth is good for #VR trips and embedded tours within @nearpod help make #digitalcitizenship and #globalawareness more prevalent. Just basic T:T connections help our ss connect as well. To lead you've got to do - first! #bfc530
We only have so much time. I want to interact with who I follow. I want to read blogs and respond. Find out what people are doing and support them.
I don't care about lists or optics. If the follow number is really small like 100 that is silly. #bfc530
