The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
My #eduwin: the International Literacy Association conference. Great time learning and collaborating with educators in Austin last weekend. #educoach#ila18
Good evening #educoach. Happy to be here as a co-moderator. My success - an awesome #CoachApproach Institute in the Chicago area is in the books! Great turn out and well received.
Hi everyone! I’m Lauren. Instructional Coach in SoCal. My win for the week was using the Reflective Self-Assessment Tool with a teacher. She is in the Action stage btw #educoach
Kristi - MS math, part-time Instructional Coach, District TLC Coordinator in North Central Iowa. This past week my husband and I explored Minneapolis and St. Paul for several days between two wonderful concerts at Treasure Island Resort & Casino. #educoach
Q1 Positive relationships are essential for reflective culture. What happens when the relationships are strong? What happens when they're weak, superficial, or negative? #educoach
A1 When relationships are strong, collaboration is fun & easy. When relationships are not, collaboration suffers & the lesson suffers or fails. As Instructional Coach, it is all about selling me and my "product" which is literacy. I'll do whatever I can to make it work #educoach
A1: When relationships are strong, everyone can safely reflect, encourage one another, and sometimes challenge each other. “Relationships are a means to an end, not the end in themselves” #educoach
A1 - Strong relationships create an environment safe for being reflective where vulnerability may factor in...can be difficult to by honest with self. Poor relationships lead to resistance, criticism, and judgement. #educoach
A1 Strong - trust, inclusion, collaborative, all working towards a common vision, welcoming.
Weak - cliques, not trustworthy, talking behind backs, not welcoming.
#educoach
A1: strong relationships allow productive conversation - get to the heart of the matter. Weak relationships and lack of trust include lots of dancing around an issue. #educoach
Q2 The authors outline 4 characteristics of effective capacity builders: mission-driven, highly self-reflective, service-oriented, and strength-focused. Which area is a strength, and which would you like to improve? #educoach
A1b: When relationships are weak or superficial, there is more compliance than commitment. If the relationship is negative, there might even be out right resistance 😬 #educoach
We renovated half of our house from February to April. I suppose it was a good break but still had to be stressful! Will be nice when done, no doubt. #educoach
A1: Strong relationships have enough trust that both are willing to take risks so both will gain. Weak relationships are built on compliance or dishonesty. #educoach
A. In Islamic education such as in madrasah and pesantren. relationships are crucial for a mutually motivating relationship between teacher and student. #educoach
Great point about being fun & easy. I enjoy working with some people and less so with others and I think it boils down to the relationship. You have a great attitude! #educoach
A2: I think I am highly self-reflective. I was curious how you all MODEL being self-reflective in the day-to-day. How do you make the process visible? #educoach
Q3 Administrators and coaches should discuss their roles, responsibilities, the nature of their professional partnership, and their common goals as capacity-builders. How do admin and coach roles complement one another’s work? #educoach
I reflect out loud about my work. I've even said to teachers, "Do you mind if I ask you for some coaching?" I have students give feedback on my lessons, and I discuss their feedback with the classroom teacher afterwards. #educoach
A2 - My strength would be my ability for self-reflection but I need to be better at being strength-focused. It is easier to find the deficiencies but more productive and powerful to build on strengths. #educoach
A. In the pesantren which is still lacking is how to carry out the educational mission as it was founded. Besides that in learning need to be developed reflective which is very close to religion. #educoach
A3: If the roles are super transparent, I think the partnership of a coach and admin can make for a supportive environment where everyone is always striving to get better. Basically, a culture of reflective practice #educoach
A2: I am very service-oriented. I like to make things happen for teachers and kids. However, I am not always mission-driven. I put too much on my plate, including other people's work. #educoach
I talk a LOT about what is happening in my classroom and what I'll likely change and why. Don't know if that makes a difference of just annoys co-workers. #educoach

A2- a strengthfor me is service- oriented. It’s just the way I’m wired, yet that is what can be my downfall sometimes. I need to remain more mission-driven. I get TOO caught up in the minutia of serving I can loose track of specific goals #educoach
Q4 Why would Fundamental 1 (relationships, roles, and responsibilities) be the most important prerequisite for building a culture of reflective practice? #educoach

It seems like there is a trend that being service-oriented comes more naturally to us coaches and that staying mission driven can help us stay balanced and not put too much on our plates #educoach
I would say vocalizing what you have been reflecting on. It’s always important that everyone sees the coach can be and is vulnerable and willing to grow! #educoach
A3 - I think the answer to this question can be found in the non-example...what happens when the administrators and coaches are not on the same page? Then it becomes a "who's in charge here" power struggle. It should be leadership and "boots on the ground". #educoach

Q5 Trust is essential for building a culture of reflective practice. What should the administrator and coach agree NOT to discuss in order to establish that culture? #educoach
I agree - video is powerful. I use it often in my virtual coaching with instructional coaches and school leaders. #educoach@SibmeApp is my favorite tool!

A4 - I don't know how I could just walk up to a total stranger and ask them why they made a decision. Hence the importance of building relationships with teachers. Create a comfortable working environment...trust, safety, vulnerability, ---leads to the real changes!! #educoach

A5 - Evaluative conversations need to be off the table. The details of convos between coach and teacher where teacher is bearing their soul and being reflective likely need to not be discussed as well. #educoach
So late and just following along on tonight’s chat! Just getting home from the Coaching Conference in Austin and I’m drained and pumped at the same time. #educoach
Q7 What are your expectations for staff with regards to reflective practice? Are you clear with yourself and your team about these expectations? #educoach
That's what I'm working on as well. I'm new to the TLC Coordinator role and we all need to be on the same page. Working towards the same vision = success for students! #educoach
Q7 What are your expectations for staff with regards to reflective practice? Are you clear with yourself and your team about these expectations? #educoach
A7: I think my coaching team and I are clear. It's in our mission and goals. Coaching in multiple schools maybe makes this less clear to teachers though. #educoachhttps://t.co/zwyOQgQobT
A7: My expectation is that I will encourage anyone that I work closely with to reflect and I hope that they would do the same for me. We need to ask the hard questions! #educoach
A7 - I don't believe we have communicated the need for reflection to staff through teams, coaching, or admin. We have work to do... but it can be done and is going on my to-do list of things to think about. #educoach
A8 - I think we are still fragmented. Working to be better. Communication that is timely and predictable with help. First though, need to be on the same page. #educoach
Being an agent of our central office, I do not get to work with every teacher under my purview (about 180). Some admin are better at supporting reflection than others. #educoach
Q9 Are there some teachers more deeply vested in reflective practices than others in your school? What might you do to increase their collective (and individual) commitment to creating a culture of reflective practice? #educoach
Sorry I missed it tonight. Busy getting ready for our family NC hiking trip. Leaving on the wee hours of the morning. Will have to pass the time in the car reviewing the posts from the #educoach chat.

A9: Definitely some Ts more vested than others. Changes in grade level team members has affected relationships and trust. I will reflect aloud whenever possible. Model! #educoach
