Hi ! Sarah from A2, MI - HS T & curr coordinator excited to finally make it to a chat! Busy start to the year!
A1: civic responsibility is about taking leadership & doing the right thing
Thanks for joining this evening!
So busy! Hopefully we can help. :)
love the inclusion of participation in ur definition. Not just awareness, action needed when CR is being practiced!
A1) Civic Responsibility is participating in your community to make it a better place
Also a reminder to folks to please append to your tweets so everyone can follow the conversation. Thanks!
A1: civic responsibility means contributing positively to society, being engaged & active in our systems
This is a great answer ! Does everyone agree? https://t.co/wqMTQYoQdw
A1: recognition that we are part of communities and with that come responsibilities and obligations to others
civic responsibility is about empathy & perspectives. w/out either we arent able to promote understanding
Empathy is key. https://t.co/307FXkscEy
civic responsibility is about empathy & perspectives. w/out either we arent able to promote understanding
Good point about understanding responsibilities and obligations. Not just passive learning.
Q1 Civic responsibility is ongoing committment to being educated about and engaged in issues facing one's community and state.
A1: Civic responsibility is 1st about understanding the process and how to communicate with others
I wonder-do we need to attach action to CR or is empathy/perspective building/awareness enough?
Q2: Civics is often taught in social studies or govt. How can it be taught in other subjects?
A1 Yes CR is participation, but also co-creation of communities in which participation is possible
A1 It is looking out for your neighbors. My sons take the neighbor's trash out weekly. It means the world to her.
I love the inclusion of perspective taking as well Takes us outside of ourselves
Excellent Question! I think action might be required.
A2 Arts = many ways to teach civic discourse. Create murals, political cartoons, videos for voter campaigns & on world issues
Hi . Great way to teach your sons responsibility and service from an early age.
and I think the co-creation of communities is where the action part comes in
it builds - you nees empathy understandinf before action
A1: civic responsibility is also about holding each other accountable - very hard for kids & adults to do!
A2: While not a standard subject, the inclusion of CR in council or Advisory is a powerful place for it to live
Many struggle to find voice in existing social/political institutions. CR is co-creating space where all are heard
Interesting - What do you mean by "co-creating communities"? How can we do that?
Absolutely agree! Scaffolding process that combines the two, but understanding and awareness come first.
Thanks for bringing this to the discussion!
A2: We teach interdisciplinary w/ all subjects. It's a concept that is not confined to one course.
Q2: We do know that arts=appeal to many diff people/connects beyond formal politico-speak
powerful conversation. These are necessary to have if we want to prepare Ss to change the world
Have you or your colleagues ever used Facing History materials?

Q2 By showing how issues like evolution, econ, health, & math all situated in political context: See https://t.co/2eMcuNiwnp

oh yes! :) my teaching career started in Chicago :)
A2 In LA, reenacting civil disobedience. I did the Montgomery bus boycott w my 2nd graders.
thinking about this much more recently. Action is important but w/o perspectives, it may be wrong course of action
A2: learning civics thru poetry and music could be interesting. Often both are used to share messages of responsibility
Hi, Kerianne! With you here, I get the and all in one! :)
A3: and have a lot of great games, videos, and materials on teaching about elections
Good point. How do we create spaces for youth the be heard since they are often marginalized - even by educators!
A2 Civics/Govt classes are too narrowly focused on procedure. Civics should be taught "across the curriculum" like writing.
Ken from Western Oregon Univ. Just arriving. Will try to get caught up
yes. the arts can provide examples of civic engagement Any favorite examples?
Q3: What resources & teaching strategies do you use for teaching civics?
Help Ss think about Universe of Obligation, who they feel responsibility towards & how it can grow: https://t.co/wbMaBzpEJz
A2: once Ss know civic engagement, purpose, can easily translate to other subjects. i.e. - focusing on sustainability in sci
So (sadly) true on that last point, ! https://t.co/VMPp8UURN7
Good point. How do we create spaces for youth the be heard since they are often marginalized - even by educators!

our Ss did public street art pieces + commentary w/ local biz . Huge success & awareness of issues
our Ss did public street art pieces + commentary w/ local biz . Huge success & awareness of issues
A3: check out - kids participate in creating solutions
Thank you for joining us Fernando! Glad to have you here.
Yes! Teaching subjects as situated in political contexts! Much diff frame than rote understanding of a topic/issue.
That sounds great! Can you give an example?
Hey, ! Scott, 8th Global Studies teacher from Elk River, MN. Excited to catch up and chat with everyone!
Get them tackling issues that matter to them, i.e. NOLA project where students proposed new statues for Lee Circle
For example - what is an actual moment? Sounds intriguing.
This is SO important , and agree it works in any subject. https://t.co/g0Sm4T0wMd

Q4: Is civics education relevant in non-democratic countries? Why or why not?
“Children may not have lived through a conflict, they live in the society that has resulted from it.” https://t.co/ow1EDEoxQL
This booklet, “Exploration of Truth, Justice & Reconciliation in Kenya” https://t.co/z98uLfc9YX is a great ex. of relevance.
A4 Absolutely! For providing mult perspectives for those Ss & Ss elsewhere which can lead to critical thinking & analysis
That civil discourse guide is great! Of course, I've been a fan since the original FHAO guide!
A4 In 2006 I had opportunity to teach civics to 22 students from Baghdad, . Number 1 issue: Trust. I learned a lot.
Holocaust & Human Behavior? Did you know we are launching a revision this Nov?
Love all these great resource suggestions (from all participants tonight). Thank you!!
Wow, that sounds like a powerful/challenging experience. Did you write about it?
A4: of course! At the core teaching civics in all societies will build stronger global connections; better human interactions
Tim, How did you build trust? https://t.co/9N3CDJKtwa
A4 In 2006 I had opportunity to teach civics to 22 students from Baghdad, . Number 1 issue: Trust. I learned a lot.
Isn't civics broadly about teaching citizens about govt & how to act as citizens in that context? So don't all youth learn this?
They can be paired. Reaching across borders & sharing what we know will help to build community & learn from each other.
Yes, we'd love to learn more about that.
A5: Respect, community engagement, social action is at core of both.Teach for those outcomes & make local-global connections.
Q2. I'm running a poetry global project starting next week. It will satisfy literacy objectives.
the teaching of government to Ss often ignores the important component of being an active citizen/participant.
Good point on propaganda education. So how do we trust educators to not be agents of the govt?
Yes!Holocaust & Human Behavior. Love that resource! Have my copy right here but look forward to the new version
Amazing! Maybe we can talk you into writing about this specific experience-start book #2 now! :0
Maybe that they have an opportunity to gain perspective on their own society, and to learn new ways
Now I know what's next on my reading list!
We will be sure to share with you. The new digital version is fantastic, the book will be released in spring.
is anyone actively using a Facing History online module now?
Q6: How should civics education be taught in the current globalized 21st century? Is it different from when we were in school?
book is free as a kindle prime subscribers, and costs one dollar to others
I think the inclusion of civics in science is so important, and often an opportunity ignored!
Yes, Govt ed is lacking. I'd 1 semester & just had to memorize facts.ACTION would've been more engaging, convincing
A6 Focus on how US, world issues impact daily life; action projects; human rights; peaceful ways to affect change
A6 Equity, social justice, mult perspectives& "humanizing" the other needs to be at forefront of civics in interconnected world
Just bought my copy ! https://t.co/fj9ikRwv0I
book is free as a kindle prime subscribers, and costs one dollar to others
A6: connect kids w/ each other across neighborhoods/cities/countries - let them help educate each other about their societies

Excuse us! This is Q5. https://t.co/Vlw6aflxSI
Q6: How should civics education be taught in the current globalized 21st century? Is it different from when we were in school?
A6 We have to stop "going out" into the world, an start "bringing the world in" https://t.co/odWA4Uioja
Q6: How should civics education be taught in the current globalized 21st century? Is it different from when we were in school?
Absolutely! It's first thing I ask my daughter after school, "what questions did you ask" before what she learned
A6: Yes it shouldn't be taught in isolation. Should be a part of interconnected topics
students should use tech to communicate across the globe & have critical dialogue with others (blogs, twitter)
thanks for tonight's . Have to sign off but had fun while here.
Q6 If integrated into modern stud-centered active learning, inst of fact recall, civics ed can be transformative in 21st cent.
Q6: How can we balance civics with global citizenship education?
I love that! Totally reframes the conversation & how she, I'd imagine, engages with what she's learning!
Q6 Technology allows 4 deep conversations and learning in real time. Mail is so slow.
I hope so! Try to encourage curiosity& critical analysis rather than seeing what child already knows
A6 I'd answer the same way. Invite the world in. Gotta run to finish dinner prep as usual. I'd invite you all, but tricky!
A6 Comparing our gov to others, powerful, 2 birds+1 stone
Hi ! Has anyone mentioned how lack of knowledge global issues & leaders makes case for ?!
Q7: How are you teaching youth about the current process or issues?
I see them as complementary, but would normally start locally w young learners
Better be something good! :)
Q6 I think virtual field trips can help w/bringing the world to youth. See PBS and Scholastic for ideas.
A6 In an increasingly interconnected & mobile world where global issues impact local not sure how we can do one w/o the other
good timing! Q7 is on the election!
