Shanna Spickard, Proud Milan Middle School Principal, #NAESP State Rep, Positivist #MEMSPAchat So very glad to join tonight with the amazing @debbiemcfalone
Hi awesome administrators. Lalena here from Downriver. I teach middle school with aspirations for learning & growth in administration and/or coaching. Looking forward to learning from you tonight. #MEMSPAchat 🍎
It's the magical energy of @debbiemcfalone and her amazing ability to lift us up that does it! So glad to be here tonight! Michelle from St. Joe checking in! #MEMSPAchat
A1: Our teachers are jumping on board with PLC and early literacy initiatives and venturing, at times, into unknown territory. The risk taking and courage they're displaying throughout is inspiring! #MEMSPAchat
A1: We are in the midst of a major bond proposal in May 2019, starting NWEA and PLC's all in one year. Lots in the hopper, but we have an amazing superintendent, awesome admin, & fantastic teachers. It's courageous, but going to be great! #MEMSPAchat
A1: An act of courage at NHMS has been my staff leading a change to change Homeroom to CREW to support SEL and Literacy. It took courage to change something that had been one way for years! So proud of my teachers! #MEMSPAchat
A1 Proud of teachers demonstrating courage and taking risks with flexible learning spaces, and innovative approaches infusing technology. Complete new approach to media instruction as well. #memspachat
A1: Our ELA teachers are implementing readers/writers workshop. TONS of work to implement first year through. They are doing great. Collaborating with and supporting one another. Growing in their practice. Kids are producing great writing and mowing down books! #MEMSPAchat
A1: I am so proud of staff and students for the risks they take. Teachers do hard work to make that all possible. Some of my favorites: 20Time, Poetry Slam, SNAP, and Standards-Based Grading. #MEMSPAchat
A1) Courageous teachers jumping in, working hard, and delivering our new reading curriculum with fidelity. Also, entire staff embracing restorative practices in order to have a restorative culture. #MEMSPAchat
A1:Having courageous conversations about what we need to start doing/continue doing b/c its best for learners vs. what we are doing just b/c it’s always been done that way. What can we let go of? None of these conversations are based on testing-it’s about learning! #MEMSPAchat
#memspachat A1: Our middle school staff is implementing a new science curriculum and trying out a new math curriculum ( Illustrative Math) AT THE SAME TIME
A1: Our courageous teachers are jumping right into facilitating The @PosProject and it's going great! I'm so GRATEFUL for all their hard work at #SCMSrocks - #MEMSPAchat
A1: in our effort to increase student voice we hosted our 1st ‘Creek Chat’ where Ss can give Ted-talk style presentations to peers - so powerful & already have a volunteer for #2!!! #MEMSPAchat
A:1 act of courage... principals and teachers being open with the data and challenging the norm. It can be politically difficult to speak for the kids that don’t have advocates. Very proud of my principals’ work for many groups but especially my ELs. #MEMSPAchat
A:1 Encouraging and Promotion of Risk Taking when it comes to thinking outside of the box and trying new ideas and strategies with teaching and learning! We are also encouraging this with our students. #FailForward#MEMSPAchat
A1) Acts of courage I see happening in my school is our staff is jumping into the deep end with our newly appointed interim principal, former Title 1 teacher, who is just returning to school from a family leave of absence #MEMSPAchat
A1:My teachers are always pioneers for taking on new risks and challenges to support students or implementing new curriculum. They have so much courage are always willing to fail forward! #memspachat
A1: The district focus is culture and the notion of ONE (Only Need Everyone) At the bldg we're working to build hope in kids while supporting each other in championing strategies for learning that transcend subgroups and triumph over ACES. #EPCRocks#MEMSPAchat
LOVE the mind shift to restorative practices! Let's have the courage to look at the deep causes of behavior and address them in a supportive way! #MEMSPAchat
A2: Dare To Lead by @BreneBrown is a wonderful read (just as wonderful as @debbiemcfalone new book). I am modeling courage by leaning into vulnerability with my staff and dropping my armor of perfectionism. #MEMSPAchat
Our school needed to find a way to increase stamina and fluency for our kids. SSR was our approach, but staff wasn't sold on the idea. Worked hard to build capacity and show them it can be done! #planning#WeCan#memspachat
Q2: I try to model courage in my learning. Volunteering to teach a minilesson in class, starting a parent book club, bringing up the "hot topics" at staff meetings etc. #MEMSPAchat
A2: I think it takes courage to challenge the status quo and to go beyond your comfort zone; where real growth can happen. I'm hoping to model that for my staff by putting myself out their more and being real and authentic with everything I do. #MEMSPAchat
A1: I see teachers courageously rethinking the discipline systems they have used for years and years and making them better aligned to the needs of students to create an empowering and need-satisfying environment for ALL students! #MEMSPAchat#Path2Serendipity
A2: I show my staff that I am not afraid to fail forward. I will take a risk when I know students will benefit. Having difficult conversations about supporting all students with staff and our community. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Helping to encourage Ts utilize the electronic pensieve, I have been going into classrooms and reading 1:1 with students and modeling the pensieve #MEMSPAchat
A1: Trying anything new takes courage these days between accountability, evaluations, fidelity measures, and questioning parents. Courage is going outside of your comfort zone and questioning the status quo. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Trying new things and having hard conversations. Sometimes the determination turns into a sense of being overwhelmed and scared--and yes even tears. It takes a lot of emotions to do hard work. The community usually gets the smiles and reassurance. #MEMSPAchat
A2) my courage is keeping my thoughts in my head while observing heated conversations at school. It can be challenging not getting sucked in. I try to pose questions that may elevate the group. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Showing vulnerability is ok. It makes you real. It's ok to fail forward, admit fault, and let them see a change of mind. We learn by doing new/more, not doing the same thing over and over. #MEMSPAchat
A2: I show my staff that I am not afraid to fail forward. I will take a risk when I know students will benefit. Having difficult conversations about supporting all students with staff and our community. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Dare To Lead by @BreneBrown is a wonderful read (just as wonderful as @debbiemcfalone new book). I am modeling courage by leaning into vulnerability with my staff and dropping my armor of perfectionism. #MEMSPAchat
A:2-Modeling risk taking with new ideas and strategies. More importantly, sharing the successes, vulnerability, and areas of failures that took place with the task. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Building capacity in my Ts so they have strategies to provide our Ss w/ the learning experiences they deserve. We started peer observations in our bldg this year. Also, sending many Ts to PD like @ronclarkacademy@getyourteachon, @VASCD#MEMSPAchat
A2: Being transparent is scary and makes you very vulnerable - and is a courageous step to take. I strive for transparency whenever possible. Creative, outside the box thinking that challenges the status quo is something that I model, as well. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Courage is our school character theme for the month. We described it as doing the thing that is right, even though you are scared to do so. #MEMSPAchat
A2: I model courage by putting myself out there to deliver district PD and in our building providing a safe spot to land when teachers support new ideas and stretch their hearts for our kids #memspachat
A2: my courage currently comes by professionally refusing to accept mediocrity from my co-AP; love him as a person while urging him to move past ‘good enough’ (we have open honest conversationsabout this daily!!!) #memspachat
A2: Being vulnerable in my growth mindset and relentlessly committed to it. There's such power in being honest about our challenges, wonderings, and next steps.
#MEMSPAchat
A2) My courage looks like a smile through really hard things, it looks like saying, "How can I help you?" when I am already feeling overwhelmed, and it looks like knowing that I do the best I can every day and that is okay. #MEMSPAchat#Path2Serendipity
A2: I am modeling courage by showing staff that I am brave enough to help them make changes that are best for students. It will always look like I am an advocate for our students and our staff. #MEMSPAchat#LMcohort9
A2) I have taken inspiration from @CraigMcCalla24 and have served in the past on committees for the underserved, such as Transgender Youth Task Force. It may not be popular to do so in conservative communities, but in education "all means all." #MEMSPAchat
A3: My staff at NHMS has influenced me in my growth more than they know. They gave me honest, authentic, and actionable feedback and it has fueled my growth to I can be the best version of myself for them. They deserve that and so do our students! #MEMSPAchat
A3: A former superintendent who isn't afraid of challenging my crazy ideas from time to time. He has helped me develop ideas until they are ready for PrimeTime with my staff. #thankful#memspachat
A2: TRYing new things. Held a Coffee w/ the Principal event last week to share our @PosProject story. TRYing new & different methods of communicating w/ LMS families. TRYing to just be me by having fun and TRYing to get the job done to the best of my ability.#MEMSPAchat
A3: LEADERSHIP MATTERS Cohort 7 with @debbiemcfalone & @rewiredprinK2! was a MAJOR influence on my leadership practices! I encourage all principals to participate. #MEMSPAchat
A3: The learning I received in Leadership Matters with my #LMcohort9 colleagues, @debbiemcfalone and @rewiredprinK2 have all inspired me to be a courageous leader. It truly showed me that I had courage that I never knew existed! #MEMSPAchat
A3: Have to give a big shout out to @debbiemcfalone and @rewiredprinK2 for their guidance. My wonderful wife Kathryn, and the best secretaries in the world Janet and MJ. These three give me the courage to always do what is best by my students. #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPA brings the learning principals need to us in such powerful ways! I can't wait to see all my #MEMSPAchat peers and to learn from them in person!!
Terrific, Becky! Our best leaders challenge the process by asking intentional questions to people and encouraging reflection about the status quo! #MEMSPAchat
For one @MEMSPA and the amazing leaders I have met. I'm honored to be apart of a PLN that is so passionate for education so passionate for Ss! And of course the Ss @GardensSchool They deserve my very best each day!! They deserve a leader who will go above and beyond! #MEMSPAchat
A:3 So much growth to speak of... collaboration with my MEMSPA and WWCDs crews, PhD work, books by @DFISHERSDSU (Fisher), Frey, Dufours, @DanielPink , Dweck, @newfrontier21 (Muhammad), and Schein. #memspachat
My staff! I learn so much from them & their ambition to do great things for Ss. It makes me want to be a better leader and push myself to stay current on the latest strategies and supports for students. This PLN is great for growth and influence, too! #mortonchat#memspachat
A3: Knowing there are students that are not being treated equitably gives me the courage to fight for them. And continued courage comes from my MEMSPA colleagues who are advocating for those students and families! #strongertogether#MEMSPAchat
3-My students-When you witness the trauma, home environment, sicknesses or other challenges that so many of them overcome, you become inspired and courageous on doing whatever it takes to to make a difference and be a better leader! #MEMSPAchat
A3: Not to be a suck up to the teacher, but @debbiemcfalone was tremendous support during my first year in the principal role while going through #LMCohort5. @rewiredprinK2 encouraged me to go after more both personally and professionally. #memspachat
A3: Definitely my principal from last year, @akalisz encouraged me to push myself as a leader by providing opportunities in our building. I am also participating in Aspiring Administrators program which has opened my eyes to what this job is all about. #MEMSPAchat
A3) having wonderful leaders sharing their experiences in such a truthful & passionate way has shaped me as a teacher leader-Aspiring Administrator @Syndee_Sue@EllenVorenkamp1#MEMSPAchat
A3) @gcouros@BreneBrown but ultimately Brady & Henry, my 2 sons...I always think about classrooms, schools, and districts I would like for them...all my work is treating every student as my own child #MEMSPAchat
Q4: Some of the barriers include other leaders who don't believe in what you are doing. They try to sabotage. Time can also be a barrier; balancing work and home life is critical. #memspachat
I had 28 RSVP and 15 show up. Still pleased. Made for an opportunity for great questions and dialogue afterward. Going to do another in the spring re: social media. #memspachat
A3) I've been fortunate to learn with leaders I would run thru fire for...the ones that planted seeds, watered and sometimes sprinkled pixie dust to help me see that the magic can happen! #memspachat
#memspachat A3: Easiest question for tonite. I have been waiting to shout out... Leadership Matters, and my MEMSPA PLN, like @khrisnedam and @cawinteringham
A3:Reading books like Dare to Lead @BreneBrown & the convos I have w/ my #scope13 PLN, #principalsinaction PLN, & mentors like @brewerhm. I am in my 1st year as a Prin. & lucky to have a courageous Supt. who encourages & supports my courage & thinking outside the box! #MEMSPAchat
A4: There are so many factors out of our control that might seem like barriers; we can only control how we respond and how we move forward with integrity #MEMSPAchat
A3) Hello everyone, chiming in late. @debbiemcfalone LM has been a game changer as well as Adaptive Schools. I am also so fortunate to work with outstanding admin! #MEMSPAchat
A4: There could be so many (legislation, parents, staff, anything we can't control) but that is why we have to be courageous... to overcome the barriers so we can serve our students. #MEMSPAchat
A4: There are so many factors out of our control that might seem like barriers; we can only control how we respond and how we move forward with integrity #MEMSPAchat
A:4 I'm a change seeker always, but the changing educational landscape (all of which is not to the benefit of kids) spins us around. It's most difficult to keep focused on mission number 1: student learning when chasing so many other initiatives. #memspachat
A4: I think I'm my own biggest barrier often times. It's pretty easy to talk yourself out of being courageous...but when you remember that what you need to do is what's best for the students we serve - we're their advocate - it makes being courageous inevitable! #MEMSPAchat
I'm going to echo Kelly, The largest barriers are often the ones we can't control. Also some of the policies and compliance tasks can make the work we do challenging. Many pull us from what is most important...Students! #memspachat
A4: There are so many factors out of our control that might seem like barriers; we can only control how we respond and how we move forward with integrity #MEMSPAchat
A4: The naysayers who get a bigger voice than they should and who refuse to be part of the solution. Courageous leaders find ways around them or ways to pull them in. #MEMSPAchat
A4) You can’t please everyone, someone is going to get upset with you, someone won’t carry their load, you may lack necessary resources, you may experience push back etc, Just keep yourself aligned to you shared vision & mission & keep yourself + #MEMSPAchat
A4: The barrier to courageous leadership is fear....fear of failure, fear of jeopardizing relationships, fear that you'll make a mistake you won't recover from....that's why I rely on the leaders in my life to remind me "It'll all be OK" #MEMSPAchat
A4) Sometimes there are so many spinning plates that we can barely keep our heads above water. Being courageous is W-O-R-K and takes mental energy, focus, and emotional strength. When we are overwhelmed, courageous acts can take a backburner. #MEMSPAchat#Path2Serendipity
A4 leaders have to feel safe enough to take risks, to fail forward. Reach out and help provide that comfort to a leader you know who may be hesitant to take a leap of faith. encourage others, build confidence, trust. #memspachat
A4: I often think that education and many working in it are so beholden to what has been done in the past. Being courageous is evolving to face new challenges, implementing new strategies based on new research, and encouraging educators to bust through the status quo #memspachat
A5: "Courage doesn't mean you get afraid. Courage means you don't let fear stop you."
We must lead forward, be not complacent, learn from mistakes, and have the courage to lead others towards a common goal. #MEMSPAchat
A5: Just saw this at Adaptive Schools: "Few things help an individual than to place responsibility upon him, and let him know you trust him." Booker T. Washington #MEMSPAchat
A4: The fear of standing there alone and failing. Always hoping you are doing what is best for students and teachers. #MEMPSAchat#saginawstem#saginawisd
A5: .@BreneBrown in Dare To Lead: “Don’t grab hurtful comments and pull them close to you by rereading them and ruminating on them. Don’t play with them by rehearsing your badass comeback. And whatever you do, don’t pull hatefulness close to your heart.” Drop the 🎤 #MEMSPAchat
A5 “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed its the only thing that ever has” Margaret Mead #MEMSPAchat
A:5 I think educational leaders have found ourselves in a moment where it is critical to be great. "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them." #memspachat
There are many persons ready to do what is right because in their hearts they know it is right. But they hesitate, waiting for the other fellow to make the make the first move - and he, in turn, waits for you. Marian Anderson #MEMSPAchat
Q6) As you reflect on your leadership, what lesson have you learned about courage that would be important for early career leaders to know? #MEMSPAchat
A6: As a leader very early in her career, I will take all the advice I can from my amazing PLN, I'm looking forward to reading all your amazing lessons :) Go!! #MEMSPAchat
Q6) As you reflect on your leadership, what lesson have you learned about courage that would be important for early career leaders to know? #MEMSPAchat
A6: Nobody expects you to be perfect or have all the answers. They want you to be you! You will burn out trying to be perfect or never making a mistake. Lead by failing forward and build relationships with everyone you meet. #MEMSPAchat OH…AND JOIN @MEMSPA
Q6) As you reflect on your leadership, what lesson have you learned about courage that would be important for early career leaders to know? #MEMSPAchat
A6: At the end of the day, you have the world's easiest litmus test as a principal. . . "What's best for kids?" Decide, commit, inspire, and act. The rest will fall into place (or off the list!). #MEMSPAchat
Q6) As you reflect on your leadership, what lesson have you learned about courage that would be important for early career leaders to know? #MEMSPAchat
A6: humility and a great sense of humor go a long way! Own the mistakes, be willing to laugh at yourself and surround yourself with awesome people #MEMSPAchat
A6: Passion comes in all forms, and it's real, so don't be afraid to speak up and let it show when your heart is telling you it's right or what is best. #MEMSPAchat
Q6) As you reflect on your leadership, what lesson have you learned about courage that would be important for early career leaders to know? #MEMSPAchat
A6: As a leader, your words should be supported by your actions in order to maintain trust. You must be brave enough to do what you say you will do...even if it is uncomfortable. #MEMSPAchat
A6 "because we've always done it that way" is not an acceptable reason. Always seek ways to improve, to help a child, support a teacher, to make a difference. #memspachat
Q6) As you reflect on your leadership, what lesson have you learned about courage that would be important for early career leaders to know? #MEMSPAchat
Q6) As you reflect on your leadership, what lesson have you learned about courage that would be important for early career leaders to know? #MEMSPAchat
A6: BE POSITIVE and ENERGETIC.
Also, don't go in thinking you know everything. Bank on your head secretary and your staff. Lead by learning, especially the first year or two... #MEMSPAchat
Q6) As you reflect on your leadership, what lesson have you learned about courage that would be important for early career leaders to know? #MEMSPAchat
A6: if you’re being courageous on behalf of others, charge on. Stop and reflect whether or not it is coming from ego. New leaders need to listen WAY more than they speak. Listening IS courageous. #MEMSPAchat
Q6) As you reflect on your leadership, what lesson have you learned about courage that would be important for early career leaders to know? #MEMSPAchat
You already said it in an earlier post. Your transparency and honesty about how hard it is to be courageous is what we all feel no matter how long we have been a principal. Thanks for lifting it up! #MEMSPAchat
A6: “In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.”
Know what is important for your students and staff and do not waiver. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Dive deep into difficult conversations and seek out others who are willing to not share your opinion and/or challenge your thinking. You will be better for it. #MEMSPAchat
A6: It is not about you proving yourself, but rather listening and and learning from the team you surround yourself with. You will NOT know all of the answers, but you are not supposed to.
When I don't know the immediate answer to a question, I always reply "What's best for kids?"....My next step is to ask that question when I think I DO know the answer to their question #MEMSPAchat
A6: It might not be your fault, but it is your responsibility. As much as we have to do, sometimes our role is to put out fires and that is what is most important in that moment. Do the work. #memspachat
A6: you can mop up messes or be courageous as hand the mop to the “mess maker”. Be courageous and have those coaching conversations so that you have time to lead, not clean up! #MEMSPAchat
I was taught early in my career that every difficult decision should put kids first. If you keep them in the forefront, even the hardest choices still make a difference for what is most important... the students. #memspachat
A6: Dont be afraid to be yourself! People have to know Principals are human, too! We have lives, families, feelings,&make mistakes. Courage is doing what’s right, even when it’s not the easiest/most popular thing to do. Keep kids at the ❤️ of every decision. #MEMSPAchat
A6: having courage may mean doing what’s best for kids and not conforming to what has been always done. It is ok to stand up for what you believe in even if it’s not always the popular choice.
Q6) As you reflect on your leadership, what lesson have you learned about courage that would be important for early career leaders to know? #MEMSPAchat

A6) No matter where you are, the school, the grocery store, the salon, you're always the Principal...and that's a good thing! Step up, shake hands, introduce yourself...be proud and lead no matter where you are! #memspachat
A7: We had a courageous conversation at our last PD of the year where we had an honest reflection of how many of our students were known and weren’t known. Authentic reflection isn’t easy but the only way to move forward. So proud of my staff. #MEMSPAchat
A7: Issues were put on the table and the staff involved were ready to do the right work for students and each other. Have had a few people chose to leave. #MEMSPAchat
A7: You are either on our Energy Bus or we need to help you transition to the right bus for you. Culture will eat your initiatives for dinner....You have to have the right people with you. #MEMSPAchat
A7: Not quite a convo, but rather a realization after staff/student survey results showed that we don't recognize our students enough for the acts of positive behavior in our building. We started changing that on Wednesday. I'll report back in a few months. #memspachat
A7: Courageous conversations about what collaboration for learning have changed our culture from "I to We" and moved us to from adult-centered to student-centered. It all started with one courageous conversation . . . and lead to many more! #MEMSPAchat
A7: Our admin team shared our vision last year, made it clear where we wanted to go & asked all Ts to decide if it was for them. Half our Ts left & we now have a team who WANT to take the journey with us. The transformation inspires me daily. #grateful#MEMSPAchat
A7: Those convos have improved instruction, relationships, trust... People know you care about them & your school when you’re willing to have those convos. They know when feedback isn’t genuine. We owe it to our schools & our Ss to be brave & not avoid those convos. #MEMSPAchat
A7: Having courageous conversations around data. To not look at it at all is being naive. To look at it too much, doesn't give us the total picture of the child. #MEMSPAchat
A6) my advice for newcomers is: find your voice, use your voice when it matters most, listen more than you talk, suspend judgment when possible, ask more q’s even when you know the answers, “Lead where you stand” you don’t need permission or rank to lead. @Syndee_Sue#MEMSPAchat

A8: I still have my daily 5 that I created in Leadership Matters! Thank you @debbiemcfalone and @rewiredprinK2 for that wonderful suggestion. Thank yo Debbie for a wonderful chat! #MEMSPAchat
#memspachat A8: Place my guiding principles on my door to serve as a constant reminder ( and for others to see), and post them here so my PLN encourages me to live them.
Thanks @debbiemcfalone for the great chat and congrats on your new book! I have my money ready for the book signing party to get my copy at #MEMSPA18#MEMSPAchat

A7: We have some challenging behaviors and Ss who need a different plan from what is considered the “norm”. Difficult conversations about what is fair had to be addressed and changed the culture of our school. Everyone gets what they need to be successful. #MEMSPAchat
A8: This year I am putting my vision, 1 belief statement and count on you count on me each week on my weekly update. It's a reminder to myself and staff of what I value. I need to add your challenge of reflection, ensuring I am living what I value. #MEMSPAchat THANK YOU!

A8: GRATITUDE...in my career I’ve always made time to say thank you; my annual tradition is to write personal notes of gratitude to every adult in our building - we need each other to be the best we can be! That’s my ‘job’ this weekend! (Between football games 😉) #MEMSPAchat
Thank you @debbiemcfalone for a GREAT NIGHT!!! That hour went fast and I'm still reading! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! So thankful for this group of amazing LEADERS! #memspachat
