Hi It’s Kathy checking in from Upland (SO CA) I teach 9th graders (biology)
Wow, well congrats of winning battle w/cold, may your luck continue w/, and no school monday
Hi Ed! Hows the new semester going?
one of our finest Ts in my LAUSD middle school would threaten the Ss to take out the text books if they didn't behave
-----------------> Q1 is ready, are you?
Watch for
they quickly settled down and got to her work, which was so much better than a text book
Seth Martin Physical Education K-5 South Lake Tahoe, CA
Joe Rodriguez Elementary School 1:1 Tech Coach from checking in from West Covina
Glad I'm not the only one who has done that
Ahh the irony that I will miss some of about lesson design because I am designing a lesson.
Q1:What is an example of a favorite lesson you designed? What made it successful?
Is it really about the textbook or how the textbook is being used? Hmmm...
*waves* at I was inspired by your blog about Pond Getting support from !
A1: GAMES!!!!! I used Angry birds to teach x intercepts. https://t.co/CIpRKC8RfR
Q1:What is an example of a favorite lesson you designed? What made it successful?
The textbook cannot hold up against an entire internet…
Traci, CTO from Dublin, CA. 1st lesson was scribbled on paper w/ pencil. Does anyone recall thar medium? Long long ago.
A1 My all time fav lesson was on an Intel (Pentium fab) loss control system course based, in part, on Pin-The-Tail-On-The-Donkey..
A1: I'm loving this , I'm excited to facilitate them, it makes T more valuable
Created Videos for Ss to self pace learning during a dance lesson.
A1- My favorite lessons as a teacher were the interdisciplinary ones that allowed our class to collaborate & create!
A1: Recent favorite lesson design, "Your Last Lesson on Theme" My students are still talking about it. https://t.co/eajbnauMV3
I'm Allan Gonzales, Program Director of the Respiratory Therapy Program in Simi Valley
A1: I’d have to say one of my favorites was in Sept 2014. I used Ed.Ted Flip YouTube tool
A1 It was successful because it was brief, a lot less talk & a bit more action. (butts-out-of-seats).
A1: collection of lessons around at Thanksgiving using StoryCorps app. Brilliant interviews in several languages
A1: Before admin, I taught MS History...loved using multimedia...popular songs, movie clips, ethical dilemmas...get em' engaged!
A1: When I turned my class into a city! Kids problem solved like real cities! It was authentic, relevant & real! Backed by results
A1 This algebra lesson needed some FUN added = QR Code Egg Hunt. It was challenging, collaborative, and outside classroom setting
A1: Ss had to play board games as ice breaker on day one, they hated it! Got to see personalities right away too.
agreed! But whether it's a textbook or the Internet, it's all about who is presenting it & how- I think!
A1:One of my faves was levee design. Was awesome bc incorporated lit, current events, applied math, engineering...Ss engaged!
A1) Fav has to be child labor simulation. Turned heat up, manual labor. Simulated harsh working conditions during Industrial Rev.
I got thank you notes from parents after this assignment.
A1 Fav lessons-Ss made PSAs for local probs & made infographs abt diseases 4 Childrens Hosp. Authentic audience made engage. easy
A1- ran a starbucks style classroom where sts ordered what they wanted to do for the day. allowed sts to delve deep into passions
A1: Learning is not boring, you are boring. You designed that lesson own it!!
A1: Before iPads, loved using "clickers" for checking for understanding and formative assessment!
A1 My best lessons = less talking, more doing. Best to let the students explore, not just sit and listen
A1: I begin with the standard and learning target in mind, then map in measurable activities like Quizizz or speed dating
it's scary to imagine, and these were 8th graders
A1- One of my fav lessons involves merging a well established lab for photosynthesis with “Iron Chef” slide share for the results
Best lessons are the ones that focus on the learning, not the teaching. Keep kids at the center.
A1: Helped my wife design casino games exploring expected value with probability, also had Ss build own paper slot machine.
A1: I had Ss write summation speeches for the defense of Joan of Arc using primary resources. They came in costume and presented.
That would have been epic
created a lesson 4 K S's explore space &body relationships-near/far & meet/part S's loved it. They celebrated finding partner.
I am participating in Teachers as Designers as part of the next 5 weeks.
A1 Currently working 1-1, which allows me to design each lesson and implement with flexibility, so every day is a good day now
A1: students used to design playgrounds. Some designs will be printed with . .
A1: part 2- my Ss were college age playing board games, BAM!
A1 succeeded because of read planning, student choice, engagement, reflection.
Love! My SS T in 8th gr did something similar to simulate slave ships... Left an impression for sure!
My master teacher used to say that the goal was to get the class to laugh 3 times in a period...make it fun and make it applicable
Always love the simulations. Have you ever done the WWI trenches one?
A1: Good old Iron Chef Lessons with Google Slides, for one! way more learning, way more fun, too.
...A1: cont'd
It worked because students owned the work. Had to show math structure/reasoning to support decisions about design.
kids still hold a grudge about that day we did it, but not a single one missed IR questions on the test either
A1 introduced me to the 8 p*ARTSs lesson for grammar. Kids moaned when I said "grammar" then couldn't get them to stop!
Games seem to be a common theme in A1s..
A1: I guess, if I am being thinking, all my lessons were Ss were inspired, learned, or both
A1: I had two Ss ask me how to build a wordpress module for their market
Love those...five minutes is all you get!
Joining late, Geri, tech tosa from central coast at comprehensive high school.
Just did that this past friday. Kids rushed from one side to another and the other side threw paper.
Well hello stranger oh and ditto to your answer
A1: Amazing Race Competition. Ss had to complete challenges to show their understanding before they recorded next activity
-----------------> Q2 is up next. Watch for
A bit late to the chat but, Val 8th grade science teacher in Irvine.
-----------------> Q2 is up next. Watch for
I want that lesson! My school is 76% Els. It sounds great!
I'll have to call my former collegue and give her a boost, I'm sure she can use it
-----> Q2 Do you just follow the teacher manual or do you create your own lessons? Why?
Jahmaal's explained it to me, but whats the Iron Chef lesson again?
A1: I had two Ss ask me how to build a wordpress module for their marketing website & I found them the best person to teach them.
We had teachers do Iron Chef slides for training
A2) I create my own lessons. Never found a curriculum that matched our standards and/or Ss needs.
Long ago when I was young we did a lesson where kids built communities out of such things as milk cartons/pipe cleaners I am old
A2: I hated the textbook...I used to start the year by literally throwing it across the room...
A2 Never got a copy of the teacher's manual. As a man I have trouble reading directions or asking for help.
A2: As a T, I never used T manual, I wanted to see what Ss saw, use fewer problems, and really find ones that offered value
A1my best lessons were ones that led to great discussions, great questions. I learned and was challenged as much as they were
A2: I always follow teacher manual if I know Admin is doing a walkthrough :)
Teaching isn't about following the manual- the manual is "one size fits all". Teaching is about teaching to your students.
Now we build them in Minecraft ;)
A2 manual=inspiration, often adapted and modified the material from texts - rarely created 100% original. Good Design takes time.
A2: I’ve never followed manuals. How can someone else know what your Ss need. It’s much more fun to create.
A2: manual can be a starting place, but the art & science is in the design for myself. Not a fan of scripts.
A2) Make up my own ( while following standards) because I know how to relate content to my students the textbook does not
I do love iron ched slides, have done it once in my non googlee environment with decent success, but set up is harder.
a2 Honestly... my first year of teaching I didn't know there was such as thing as a teacher manual. :)
A2: Actually I use curriculum including standards and teacher materials as a guide. Most material is web based or my own
A2: constantly making my own peer-peer activities, scavenger hunts, etc. using supplemental curriculum and GAFE/web 2.0 tools.
A2: I only give lessons when a student asks for one, and then only until the student decides it's enough. https://t.co/MrSVvRdUAD
-----> Q2 Do you just follow the teacher manual or do you create your own lessons? Why?
A2 Back then I hadn't had much training in instructional design beyond https://t.co/cjtzkYRiwS .. it's activity-based.
A2: The T manual doesn't know my Ss. Not wrong to use, but make it fit your style & Ss. The Ss will know if you're being fake!
A2: I prefer creating my own &making it my own. If I'm not confident w/ it then Ss can tell. Also like being flexible 4 S learning
A2 havent found a teacher manual that works! You should know, teach & assess the standards with authentic meaningful experiences
A2 Teacher manual is a guide, but I plan for my STUDENTS. I know my kids best.
A2 currently using the lesson directions for , but it's based on and contains excellent ideas
A1designed quadratic lesson "Can I kick it?"About time the Cowboy punter hit scoreboard in new stadium-research,modeling w Desmos
Interesting, I looked to problems to provide inspiration, pre-interwebs, then good times
A1:S's using a Hershey bar to learn the concept of multiplying fractions.
projects made me soo flipping happy, but that was all the kids, they did amazing things w me purely in supporting role
A2:Love creating own lessons over T manual--make more relevant &hands-on, design around S interests, incl cross-curric connections
Q2: Do my own thing more, lets me better adapt to the topic interests I have and can pass on and to s's abilities and interests
I used to tell kids we could do this the fun way or the easy way...the textbook is the easy way...
A2: In the PE world there is no manual (there are standards), which I ❤️, allows 4 creativity in creating learning experiences.
A2 The art of teaching is planning great learning experiences. I prefer to plan my own bc I know my Ss the best.
A2 as I learn the approach + my S's needs, I vary my design
A2 Increasingly I interview subject matter experts (SME) and learners n ask what they REALLY want beyond using gaps n such..
gotta luv being “Flippy happy”
A2 Rarely follow TE. Publisher doesn’t know MY kids. I have lots of ELs. Sometimes qstns and enrichment ideas are helpful.
Just followed your blog -love the Starbucks classroom!
A2- how can you teach from a manual when you need 30+ different manuals daily?
RT alicekeeler "A1: Learning is not boring, you are boring. You designed that lesson own it!! "
RT alicekeeler "A1: GAMES!!!!! I used Angry birds to teach x intercepts. https://t.co/HGQgVHjE3w "
Q1:What is an example of a favorite lesson you designed? What made it successful?
A2 Also much of my curric is “ripped from today’s headlines.” Textbooks are years behind.
If I'm bored when I teach, I know to make adjustments immediately, and I bore easily
A2 See Matthew 7:12.. the part about doing unto others as you'd have done unto you. I freelance a lot.. seems to work.
-----------------> Q3 is set. Watch for
Ss felt that their results were more important when OTHERS could see it. They were more careful to be accurate.
A1: recent fav, having s's research and write proposal for reducing plastic pollution, really let s's self differentiate
Q3 Why is it important for teachers to create their own lessons?
A2 I have used a manual in some very prescriptive classes, but even then I adjusted for MY KIDS.
A2 Manual is a starting point. Have to know the Ss, use lots of formative assessment, be flexible, adapt as you go
A2 It surprises me how many Ts feel like they have to follow the manual to the T. It is okay to stray, adapt to your Ss needs, etc
I agree , like says--Ditch That Textbook https://t.co/UVLVqKCRju
A2: Actually I use curriculum including standards and teacher materials as a guide. Most material is web based or my own
When is the time for my internet to lag? NOT NOW!
Programs, manuals, curriculums, etc are just resources. Teaching & learning is about knowing your kids & their readiness levels.
Hard to stay relevant in non-digital format
A3: You own it when you create it...
A2: I know a teacher named Manuel...
A2 for regular lit classes I always went by my own design and in collaboration with other teachers. We dont need no stinkin roads!
Good evening, . Marilyn, from El Centro, CA. Way down south . . .
Seems obvious, if you as T are bored, how might your Ss feel? I'm glad you adjust (:
A3) I think every teacher answered Q3 in A2. We create to fit our students' needs while making content relatable
actually… my principal is pretty flexible. But there are focused observations that are more formal.
A3 Think it is important for diff sub Ts to collaborate on lessons and make curriculum more coherent for Ss.
A3: Only the T knows what their Ss need.
A3: lesson design invites us to look deeper into the engine of learning. Why put something first/mid/last. Where to focus, why...
A3: Same reason we appreciate things more when we work hard for them, we're invested, we know it from ground level, ownership
Why does everyone adjust for "the kids?" Why not just let the kids do it all? https://t.co/F0IORnPH1k
A2 I have used a manual in some very prescriptive classes, but even then I adjusted for MY KIDS.
A3: Only the T knows what their Ss need. https://t.co/KgkktXc7LT
you right. I mean YOLO. Might as well kiss the first girl you see 😂
working with SpEd Ss is a good fit for me :)
Providing meaningful real life interaction in science class...sounds like a master T to me https://t.co/zoLQbbNh0j
Part of science is about publishing results & sharing what we learned. They say that activity as a way to do that.
A3 Growth. Professional development. Engagement as a developer of people.
A3: It is important to take time to develop and curate lessons that are tailored to the needs and interests of our students.
Hi ... jumping in late, came across the chat on my twitter feed.. would love to join in!
A3- because they are in the room with their kids. They know how to reach them best. No 2 snowflakes are alike.
I think that smtimes it has to do w/ benchmarks/testing. Have to follow manual to cover all info.Very unfortunate
A3 no manual can show you how to meet the needs of the kids in your classroom. Teaching is about kids, not content.
SORRY! I just thought it was funny as I read A2s because everyone answered Q3 by justifying their A2s
When I create a lesson, I am more invested in its success...if it bombs...that's on me...no one else to blame!
A2:No manual. Use open source - activity builder, s & whatevr say
There are teacher's manuals??? Not in my room.
Think we covered this Q in Q2. Going to move to Q4 :)
Think we covered this Q in Q2. Going to move to Q4 :)
Ahh nice, truth be told, most Ss are probably subjected, but especially SpEd kiddos
A3: puts the craftsmanship into the word teacher!
A3: we can create lessons that are tailored to the needs and interests of our students
A3) Creating our own lessons allows for relevant context, differing learning levels, and the opportunity for increased engagement.
Sorry I didn't introduce myself at beginning. I'm Justin from Delaware. I teach high School Social Studies.
A3: You know your Ss better than the people who write the textbooks. You can tailor the lessons to their wants and needs.
A3: When we create, we think: question: learn and provide opportunities to share our passion with our Ss
As a guide... not a script.
A2-I used my text to guide last year (1st time teaching that content). More free this year to follow my instincts and needs of Ss
Or stray even further and let students decide what they want to learn. No adapting necessary. https://t.co/JR7M337nNF
A2 It surprises me how many Ts feel like they have to follow the manual to the T. It is okay to stray, adapt to your Ss needs, etc
Only is a strong word here. Maybe more along lines of others don't know my Ss like we (T and Ss) do.
A3b What factors might influence a teacher who develops their own lessons? Their environment? School culture? Current students?
-----> Q4 What is your process to hone a good lesson and make sure it's Teflon smooth?
A3: Make your lessons because you won't 100% own it if you don't.
Yes! I think collaboration is a key way we sharpen our skills and measure effectiveness https://t.co/GSDiUEV6wg
A3 Think it is important for diff sub Ts to collaborate on lessons and make curriculum more coherent for Ss.
A3 making my own lessons helps me be passionate about it and encourages me to seek out ways to make it engaging
A1: Animals. 🐙Lesson 🐸Plans with Animals🦂 really🐠 kept🐜Ss attn.
👫👬👭 They're 6yrs old.
Ted Kirkbride, principal of in jumping in to
A3c Seems as though a teacher designing/developing their own lessons (which may reflect their environemnt) meets more needs.
A3 Also important because we are professionals! We didn't go to graduate school to follow a book sentence by sentence!
So true! I enjoyed tching my lessons way more than most textbks...Even the failures :) Mine built specific for my Ss!
A3 Basing my design on Big Ideas, and using to open discussion and thought gives me and Ss meaningful instruction
A4: For me, it took practice...sometimes, I felt bad for 1st period as they were my guinea pigs for a lot of ideas!
Double edged sword here. We're invested, and we need to be able to reform the lesson too.
A3 other's lessons may be great for them and their kids, but you need to adapt it to make it great for you and yours
A3d It'd be like the difference between Vanilla ice cream and Black Walnut (papa's fav ice cream)..
That is the beauty of MS... Us elem Ts have to wait a year to make it better ;)
A3: It keeps me engaged w/ teaching. If I do everything robotically then a robot can do my job
I was teaching sabermetrics-reading the girl who loved Tom Gordon(Stephen King)-then attending an ⚾️game while He was pitching A1
I bet, I did as well. I loved building them, connecting them, and seeing how to make them better
A3:T designed or adapted lessons imptnt, yes! Helping Ts own their lesson design again after NCLB... Tough
Are we referring 2 textbooks as manuals & v/v? Not the same IMHO. Textbooks, and manuals can be great resources, but not scripture
a4: practice, learn from mistakes, get student feedback. peer feedback, too. pretty much have
A3 Ts need to create/tweak own lessons like stakeholders need to create mission statement, not just be handed it. Need to “own.”
A3: Our students need to see that we aren't unoriginal and model innovation--and include their input! As long as we know our LTs
But we can never really know them as deeply as they can know themselves. They can declare their readiness as well.
A2: Both. Ts📚publishing companies have standards aligned, thematic, differentiated lessons w/resources, etc.
A4: solid lesson is this: content that is crazy, risky and relevant. Doesn't need bells/whistles. Ask this: so what?
A3: HOW are we learning as Ts, if we just COPY the worksheets and READ the instructions???
Sometimes it is the willingness to go off-script that lead to best lessons...like cooking...best dishes may not follow the recipe!
Lesson creation isn't a static process, reflect and improve should be part of cycle but you're right it's not 1 & done
A4 I collaboratively build lessons with other Ts. The more brainpower the better!
A4: As I listened to recent podcast my biggest challenge is students “Playing School”
Very, very true! It was a joy of MS that by 3rd period, I had that lesson DOWN!!
Collab is the BEST - shared burden and inspiration ;) https://t.co/6JgRd9Yczn
A2 for regular lit classes I always went by my own design and in collaboration with other teachers. We dont need no stinkin roads!
A4: practice, request for feedback/reflection.
COLLECT S WORK.
Only way to know if lesson was good 4 Ss is see their side of it.
I like that comment, 1st time Ts might need textbook support, then grow from there
A4 I don't have teflon smooth lessons. My Ss need flexibiity, and I'm still learning
A4:go over it again and again when you go to bed, when you wake up, and in your drive in-- anticipate All Students' responses
A4 Asking for student feedback is critical!
Teflon smooth? That's never happened in my classroom, but that could just be me ;)
same here, my lessons 1st period often look quite different by 7th.
Yes! “: A4: As I listened to recent podcast my biggest challenge is students “Playing School” ”
A4: DO the assignment MYSELF first - and have some friends take it too. Lots of reps.
Great Q! T as designer does require supportive school culture Many Ts still reeling from scripted programs prev required
A4) Base it off student engagement and feedback. So far I am still looking for that teflon smooth lesson
not even sure what “teflon smooth is”
A4 Love to get student feedback and incorporate their suggestions into next iteration of a lesson.
This is natural to me. <3 it! “: A4 I collaboratively build lessons w other Ts. The more brainpower the better! ”
A2:👹
T created LPs are so much more creative+targeted for Ss: personal interests, differentiated by ability level.
I got the idea from & Ss were able to access info fr other classes https://t.co/rz28tdvz0q
Providing meaningful real life interaction in science class...sounds like a master T to me https://t.co/zoLQbbNh0j
Part of science is about publishing results & sharing what we learned. They say that activity as a way to do that.
A4:Use S feedback and assessment to tweek lessons and improve for next time
Yeah, me too...even when things are going right, one kiddo will totally throw a monkey-wrench!
Love that idea, getting better together, is always a valuable process (:
agreed! Co-creating also helps us build community within a grade division and share perspectives.
I do ask for student feedback, what could've skipped, be better, and what I should do for that extra push, that helps.
A4: reflect on formative assessments, engagement, efficiency and modify/adjust. Use as a resource for ideas
Only the teacher knows? Really? What about the student? They don't know what they need? https://t.co/WmTYMiQCSL
A3: Only the T knows what their Ss need.
A4: The first time to create it should be long before you intend to use it. Good lessons are like fine wine, need to breathe
And that's why the hole in the walls have the most loyal customers!
What Amanda said... https://t.co/3Qjjf1aARk
A4:Use S feedback and assessment to tweek lessons and improve for next time
-----------------> Q5 is up next. Look for tweet!
A4: I like backwards design. Start with asking about the desired outcome(s) and then design the lesson.
I think Ss appreciate it. Had S thank me two years ago for trying new things w/them & encouraging risk taking
And sometimes, that monkey wrench is better than what I planned ;)
Ever tweeted your lesson to get peer feedback?
A4- i like to work backwards w st help. Start with outcomes, move back to assessment and then they choose how they will get there.
A4 Process: Ideally have tons of time to plan and collaborate. Anticipate Qs, bumps, aha-s.
A4: super important to note/anticipate common student misconceptions and responses in the planning phase helps to make lesson gr8
A3: So that you can create learning experiences for your S's, & their needs. A script is not individualized
going on a tangent and be fun and learning experience in teaching
Q5 How do you incorporate student choice into your lesson design?
A3: Thecreation/design process is difficult but so worthwhile. Ive never worked as hard the past 2yrs but now Im a better Teacher
A4: I like to make note on my lesson plans after - reflections and questions so we can revisit next time ... lesson continuity
Can we make that topic/question in the future?
A4: Peer collaboration is essential. We must eliminate the 1 room school house and work with our peers to develop lessons
Unless students are free to design their own edu. Then they get to know themselves best.
Agreed. My kids know they are my guinea pigs, but that I am not going to be boring.
. yes, I think this is the ONLY way-It's obvious when a lesson is not; students aren't as engaged https://t.co/7pgOuLymjy
A4: I like backwards design. Start with asking about the desired outcome(s) and then design the lesson.
add to that, flexible choices for Ss to personalize the learning
Maybe we can do that TONIGHT?!
A5 Try to provide lots of Stu choice in all projs. Playlists of instruct materials. Ss pick path they want
A5: Let them choose how they show their learning...had an EL student show the causes of the Renaissance as a mural...she got it!
. A5: Allow students choices about how to present their learning
I begin each class projecting a photo of a baby animal for “awwww” when they enter. Emotional manipulation! ;)
A5 If there is a creative end product. Give S choice on style of end product, just can't be duplicated from previous assignments.
agreed. anticipated questions ( even in early years) helps me think about the lesson from an objective perspective
A5: WHAT IF we went beyond lesson design? Invite Ss to write curriculum. Here's the standards, how shall we cover them together?
A5: Student choice with in the elementary classroom has been successful with flexible blocks of time.
A4 Planning! Anticipating potential problems. Don't just show up-prepare!
A5 I ask for suggestions on tools, I give choice in their assessments, etc..
A5 We don't assign "how to show what you know." Ss choose how... which app? No tech?
Don't have to if the S has their own benchmarks. Only info necessary is what info the S is interested in. https://t.co/MNB0gcEVlQ
I think that smtimes it has to do w/ benchmarks/testing. Have to follow manual to cover all info.Very unfortunate
Exactly my point! (: https://t.co/OWwjkaxyt6
A5: WHAT IF we went beyond lesson design? Invite Ss to write curriculum. Here's the standards, how shall we cover them together?
A4 Empathy. Dunno about Teflon smooth. I’m a fan of iterate. At some point it’s done. Perfect? Probably not. Satisfice.
A5: WHAT IF we Invite Ss to write curriculum. Here's the standards, how shall we cover them together? https://t.co/6fVY6FZBYW
Q5 How do you incorporate student choice into your lesson design?
use the word OR in task lists!
A5: Move away from scantron style quizzes and move toward a PRODUCTION, not just an essay answwr - allow a menu of responses.
A5: I try to give options to get to end result. Workplaces allow for that. Schools should too.
A3- Ts should create (or adjust) lessons according to S needs, T style, T skills, School Environment, State standards/Content
Definitely. Student choice is essential. I love it when Ss come up with their own projects.
A5: The way I incorporate varies w/ lessons. They can choose way to present, topic, supplemental info, & always creativity
A5 Focus on students being CREATORS not CONSUMERS.
A5: Also allow S's to choose what they want to learn. Used this in w/ What Do You Want to Learn? projects
So important! We have to improve as we go https://t.co/YBuP6qR9dt
A4:Use S feedback and assessment to tweek lessons and improve for next time
Ok, that's pretty good too (: https://t.co/bkLkdryomk
A5: Move away from scantron style quizzes and move toward a PRODUCTION, not just an essay answwr - allow a menu of responses.
I like NCTMs 5 strategies for orchestrating math discussions-Anticipate/sequence responses https://t.co/9F7V8Z2vVb
A4: super important to note/anticipate common student misconceptions and responses in the planning phase helps to make lesson gr8
even the classroom with out grades. Students measure own learning and show what they know.
EZ way 4 S choice in math: offer for them to choose an option from group.
Then defend w/reason+calc
Bringing the outside world into the classroom as audience, collaborators, for feedback, or just to share student awesomeness
A5) tough Q. Allow for creativity and choices in projects. Need to check out more tweets here to learn new ideas
A4: teach lesson, assess, reflect, adjust, and repeat! Fine tune each time. Every group will be different.
True, but at my old school every depart had to give same test every 3 weeks to ensure S learning & T effectiveness
A5: I use assignment grids, Ss can choose their product. I don't care how Ss show their understanding, just that they understand
That was just me being curious and straying from the "lesson plan" sorry to confuse you
active learning vs. passive learning
YEEEESSSSSS! Students so much more engaged when given choices https://t.co/ue7KhWNepx
. A5: Allow students choices about how to present their learning
A5: student choice is evident through inquiry based learning experiences. its our 'job' to facilitate the learning
Math makes it easy, 'cause it's the best subject (;
Exactly! Love having them create their presentations in groups & showcase that to community! Parents love it too!
A5:S choice of how to present lrning & on Cont to grow in this dept
A5 even for more straight forward lessons I try to have a place for students to give opinion and think critically
A5: I tried letting Ss grade themselves, they had to justify their scores...they were so critical, but great CFU
A5) In 6th, it's easy to brainstorm "evidence of learning" outcomes together. Ss suggest some, I throw in a few as well.
Or reverse the equation and let Ss tailor school to their own interests/needs and be available when asked https://t.co/7Dpx5uLPWk
A3: we can create lessons that are tailored to the needs and interests of our students
Yes! and this is the true art of teaching. Without this challenge they/we won't grow https://t.co/41KH2MJSeq
A5 Focus on students being CREATORS not CONSUMERS.
A5 continually elicit S feedback and reflections, partner with S to set goals and means for meeting
Can you share? would love to see an example!
A5:S choice of assignment & how to present lrning Cont to improve on this in designing lessons..
A5a Feedback reflects student choice. The higher the fidelity feedback the truer the choice. I use video when I can..
we were talking about using a teachers manual vs self created material. A manual doesn't know our Ss.
You'd love 6yr olds. That's an everyday experience. every lesson
A5: Still learning how to maximize Ss choices in lessons. Choice of content (e.g. poems), indiv or partner, ways to show learning
A5 At a law enforcement academy a while back I experimented with video feedback. They think they made a choice n video show nope..
When Ss create, they think, question, learn and have passion. Little else required. https://t.co/Mq8BBKbmPJ
A3: When we create, we think: question: learn and provide opportunities to share our passion with our Ss
A5:Choice must be carefully crafted/negotiated so novelty wont trump building conceptual understanding/skills of intended outcome
A5 21st century learning: Voice, Choice, Innovation, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking Self Assessment. See next pic (my class)
I loved how my 5th grade T let us choose what piece to study in the overarching theme. I was super engaged!
very true. I guess I say this as a kindergarten teacher - philosophy of student led learning the same
A5 Ss can have choices in process too. In math, I let Ss Choose the Challenge. When given the choice, most will go for it!
iWent through that. 2yrs of serious focus. I didn't even know who OneDirection was when I became a "civilian" again.
A5: determine goal, offer them many paths 2 reach it. Effective passing strat. can be found w/ many pieces of equip let them pick
That sounds awesome Laura!
A5 (my class Twitter), and kids know this. That was a day when peeps wanted to talk about a topic 😎 https://t.co/9sUhTJEXdm
It works... plus so many "little lessons" hidden in there too! Love. Love. Love!
My projects are moving that way.. workers designing their own learning experiences grounded in adult learning theory
With S choice, comes messiness! Gotta be ready to roll up sleeves to help guide, not control.
Ss are working on 1 now. Ss have 16 choices to show their understanding. I can post a pic of it tomorrow https://t.co/tqQdhEXaH8
Can you share? would love to see an example!
---------------------> Prepare for Q6 from
Interesting, would love to hear more about that
---------------------> Prepare for Q6 from
Yes, When Ss can make decisions about how to present what they have learned, it’s great feedback. https://t.co/R3duad8ozB
. A5: Allow students choices about how to present their learning
If you are liking tonight - next week and I are sharing on the chat. A day w/o worksheets
-----> Q6 What “other skills” do you incorporate into lessons other than content standards?
🙊1️⃣room schoolhouse. Lol. Esp w/📲tech advances. There's no excuse to not collaborate/share strategies.
A3: bc Ts know what their Ss needs are and can tailor instruction to learning styles and ability
LOVE 3actmath-we show it to teachers all the time
when I was dept chr I refused 2buy these anymore.Didnt eliminate bubbles, but eliminated paying 2give them https://t.co/oQNW0SUfY9
Q5 student choice is essential in my makerspace lessons. Their creativity and curiosity give them ownership of the lessons.
A5: Let them choose how they want to share/present their learning
A6 social emotional skills and thinking skills integrated in my designs
. Collaboration and Oral Communication skills so important for success in life!
A6: I loved including moral/ethical dilemmas to discuss...the convos were always so rich and it gave opps to discuss character!
A6: trying to incorporate at least one ISTE standard as well as a digital citizenship strategy
A4: when Ss decide... All day.
I was was impressed with the POWER of the writing our 4th and 5th produced. Rich lang
Same here, I wanted Ss to say they did more writing in my math class than in their ELA classes
A2: emotional intelligence SHOULD be part of every lesson/curriculum. Also, tech skills e.g. ISTE NETS-S
A6: real world scenarios, stories, and current fun references to keep every Ss interested.
unfortunately this is still the case. We must work together for our Ss. We are taking the right steps ton. https://t.co/dqDWfAI7aF
🙊1️⃣room schoolhouse. Lol. Esp w/📲tech advances. There's no excuse to not collaborate/share strategies.
Requires collab or Ss perceive inequity among classes. Just saying’ https://t.co/ziIUtuqNuu
A5 Focus on students being CREATORS not CONSUMERS.
A6: Life skills, metacognition, literacy, social interactions, Ss voice, and just sprinkle or two of fun
A6: coming from early years, social /emotional and personal development are key. They help students feel safe and happy at school.
I agree Social and Emotional learning is key to student success
A6 Learning is social. Building in collaboration is so important and not always "natural" for students. They need practice.
A6- choice, passion and humour.
A6: communication collaboration critical thinking especially opportunities for meta cognition to occur
A6: speaking and listening standards, collaboration with peers, technology, self-evaluation, to name a few skills
A huge piece, Ss are whole people, why don't we treat them as such https://t.co/F9uWiKKWf1
I agree Social and Emotional learning is key to student success
A6:'Soft skills'--collab, creativity, critical thinking, prob solving Also https://t.co/4BSoaFjj78
-----> Q6 What “other skills” do you incorporate into lessons other than content standards?
Learned this with Best and scariest teaching experience ever! https://t.co/ERtKnn1Ppx
With S choice, comes messiness! Gotta be ready to roll up sleeves to help guide, not control.
involves working with people experiencing problem/opportunity. They know what they need.
Not limited to, writing was involved everywhere, but yes that too (:
A6 At we also try to build in little lessons about creative confidence.
Can Ss choose and pick their own path altogether? https://t.co/owmAFD3fzp
A5 Try to provide lots of Stu choice in all projs. Playlists of instruct materials. Ss pick path they want
It has literally been a dream come true. Thankfully some awesome people made the school possible :)
A5: Many choices! Homework challenge, tasks to complete, collaboration, essential questions, etc.
A6) In history, always try to relate content to relevance today, critical thinking, & discussing P.O.V.s
A6: S's need 2learn independence, trust, honesty, cooperation. teaching snowshoeing S's put them on themselves help 2 other S's
What might be the case(s) when limited experiences or emotions might block pathways to answers?
This is great! I need to be more deliberate about incorporating standards into lessons
A6 - I always wanted to have students think critically about science in my classroom, giving them time to work together
A6 reading, writing, communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking,... Practical skills
Or let them design the standard too. Real innovation begins! https://t.co/cJleBbICyA
A5: WHAT IF we went beyond lesson design? Invite Ss to write curriculum. Here's the standards, how shall we cover them together?
A6: In addition to research and written or oral expression, soft skills like collaboration, questioning, dealing with frustration.
absolutely, great Qs to push all Ss
A6: Listening, speaking, writing, encouraging, collaborating, all 8 Math Practices..oh yea...and..GROWTH MINDSET!
A6- incorporate inquiry approach. structured, controlled, guided and free.
. @ was the best thing I ever did in my classroom. Hardest, most exhausting, and best, hands down.
A6 Just as important to build in student reflection. Often the part of the lesson that gets cut out bc of time.
Laura you are so funny! But I get it...I love - you can hopefully meet her at
. I really like the inclusion of community in this list of essential 21st century skills. It's usually left out!
how would that look in the classroom for you?
A6- “Other skills” are my true focus. Content is important, but to share, create, keep trying, & solve problems are life skills
Hahaha! followed me too! :)
Still a work in progress. Trying to move Ss from what do they know to what can they do
we'll have to find a different vehicle here in Los Angeles instead of snowshoeing
They're a boy band. A really popular one. Had no clue🤓😳Kind of embarrassing. i📝an EduPlan for them.
A6 Realism. With adult learning context matters. If task being trained involves working in all weather then learning it does too..
Incredible power when kids build their learning paths https://t.co/reDVuYoEc0
A5: WHAT IF we went beyond lesson design? Invite Ss to write curriculum. Here's the standards, how shall we cover them together?
A6: I use content to teach skills. I want my Ss to learn skills that transcend my class. Google can find facts but it cant analyze
That's a good chat night!
“: Hahaha! followed me too! :) ”
A5: my student's design their entire day and path to adulthood too. Period.
Well that is serious business when gives you a follow!
Love that! We honor the 5 Cs at
Yeahhhhhh! Can't wait for
They're record company didn't take an interest in it. I think it's a good plan for them. I might be the only one...
--------------------> will be sending out Q7 soon.
A6-Speaking effectively.A skill Ss don't practice enough&I would argue is as important as writing. They have to speak every day.
really depends. Can be using sticky notes, step by step, about a big topic all the way to
I am wondering if it would be that easy, alt examples, time to breakdown, and let emotions calm....more?
+ + + + + + Well said, Justin! https://t.co/OTT8L12fR9
A6: I use content to teach skills. I want my Ss to learn skills that transcend my class. Google can find facts but it cant analyze
sually works out. is ideate, prototype, test. Repeat. First couple times it's woozy but works.
I agree! These skills are relevant at any age.
Hey -- just discovered that you work w/my girl Small world!!
Unless they want to understand something else and then breakdown happens. https://t.co/ASBDCOy0dp
A5: I use assignment grids, Ss can choose their product. I don't care how Ss show their understanding, just that they understand
Really helps in providing "Voice" in writing. Authentic. https://t.co/NQdxbOSH4G
A6-Speaking effectively.A skill Ss don't practice enough&I would argue is as important as writing. They have to speak every day.
A7 Student ownership is the necessary ingredient. Ss learn they get out what they put into their education.
That is because you are awesome!
What's CSTEM. It's listed on your bio. . I'm moving to the BayArea 😬🍎. 😐🙃
May I ask, what the term woozy means in this context?
I can't find Q6 but I have a feeling it's touchy-feely :)
Be sure to follow some new educators from the chat tonight to help grow your PLN
A7: Combo key ingredient okay? Authenticity and relevance. Hands down. No debate. Next question.
Agreed! Been teaching Ts abt how to teach/use Accountable Talk in this month So important!
Are you near San Diego? There's a camp coming next month. Check it out.
A6: I like lessons that r open-ended and allow for diversity of thought - not one “right” answer. Ss need 2 explain their thinking
Understanding comes at the point of articulation
It doesn't have to be the adult's job. It can be the Ss job entirely. We can be available when asked. https://t.co/V9hOlPrw2i
A5: student choice is evident through inquiry based learning experiences. its our 'job' to facilitate the learning
A7: Clear objective with student self assessment. Gives you one of the biggest bangs for your buck according to Hattie
Ahh I wish, I am not near SD, otherwise I would
Understanding comes at the point of articulation
RT Be sure to follow some new educators from the chat tonight to help grow your PLN
You'd love what happens when they have choice over everything then! https://t.co/4CCruXFi66
YEEEESSSSSS! Students so much more engaged when given choices https://t.co/ue7KhWNepx
. A5: Allow students choices about how to present their learning
A6- allow it to be messy. go to work with big ideas u want to guide, not the silo education, checking off boxes of "to do's"
Woozy? That feeling you get trying something out that you're not good at. Like working w/o a net.
Yes, in my 12th grd humanities PLC this year we made oral comm the focus of all our formative assessmts!
I'll look for the San Diego camp link.
A7: Student Interest/engagement
We are sharing Digital Learning Day () next week on chat - think "a day w/o worksheets"
A6 Yeah, not just content! Problem solving, collaboration, critical thinking, please and thank you!
Ahh, ok so not being like sick of or caused from a substance. Interesting.
I am a big fan of Kagan's cooperative learning structures
participated last few years…. kids love Digital Learning Day.
A7: Key ingredient is FUN..when was the last time you spent 90 min. having fun & forgot about it. When Ss have fun, they remember
A7: an opportunity to sing! Everyone should sing at least once a day. It creates a powerful connection like no other! 🎵
Side note: What does this say about the teachers & admin in Ed today who are resistant to change? https://t.co/zbNBXwdpjX
A7: Two sides of same coin: T’s clear objective and Ss’ engagement/choice
A7:Key ingredient=engaging! Ss want to lrn & willing to work hard when you keep them engaged
iReally really really really really really really like the🆕NGSS+not just bc iWant to work4️⃣NSTA. ELA integration
Q7 If you were to pick “one key ingredient” for a phenomenal lesson, what would it be? Why?
I design learning for adults.. law enforcement, clinicians. Learning from Ts & applying to my learners = woozy
A7- High interest (either because S NEED it or because S WANT it). Sometimes we need to help them see the need.
A7 Sugar and spice. Make it sweet with a little laughter. Make it relevant to Ss with something spicey.
yes-we must allow for error-analysis. Mistakes and diversity of thought are part of learning! Many times no wrong answer
A7) Teacher attitude. It dictates the entire class/day
Sometimes learning by doing drives a lot of questions, creativity and skill building.
Shameless plug: will be April 23, mark your calendars and come visit the central coast for a great
It's a program from to get MS and HS S's excited about via and
A7 - passion...from the students and the teacher
Q6-What "other skills" besides content in the lesson?
Yes!! Right in! https://t.co/VZfJ4UEL39
A7: Key ingredient is FUN..when was the last time you spent 90 min. having fun & forgot about it. When Ss have fun, they remember
Exactly! if students can take what they do in my class and apply it to another we all win, Ts and Ss.
Yes! Right on! https://t.co/VZfJ4UEL39
A7: Key ingredient is FUN..when was the last time you spent 90 min. having fun & forgot about it. When Ss have fun, they remember
A7 I'd put more ingredients in it but it only said one...
A7: Authentic Audience--> Transforming Teaching and Learning with an Authentic Audience https://t.co/MzjmpRiTZI via
Choice must be thrown wide open! Self determination is no novelty and deep understanding is the outcome. https://t.co/3G5WmOKV8F
A5:Choice must be carefully crafted/negotiated so novelty wont trump building conceptual understanding/skills of intended outcome
Well... we should do a lessons share on a Google Doc sometime (maybe for a chat) and give feedback!
A7 In Gamestorming there's this idea of fuzzy goals. Not knowing at start what the end looks like. Be less serious.. make mistakes
A7: my key ingredient is putting my voice in content I curate. Relationships are important to me.
Drop the mic! https://t.co/JqguZ6XJ9t
A7: Key ingredient is FUN..when was the last time you spent 90 min. having fun & forgot about it. When Ss have fun, they remember
A7- put in coffee in the morning and chocolate after lunch :)
sounds like the opposite of a teflon smooth lesson :)
A7: Thought I had missed Q7 :) I heard once. Every lesson needs to be awesome when the teacher is engaged
A7 Passion, gotta find that passion piece and than all falls into place. Relevance, authenticity, engagement all there.
A7 willing to let things get messy, be loud, & focused on student learning (instead of the other nonsense in a teachers day)
Hey next Sunday at 8pm you need to join . Its been super beneficial for me in my first year of teaching
I think it's all related! My LDT masters program focused more on adult lrners, but it all translates to elem
A7 Key ingredient = passion! It's our work to spark passion for learning in those Ss minds, so we Ts have to bring it!
Or to just stand back and wait. https://t.co/S9zgUojrb3
With S choice, comes messiness! Gotta be ready to roll up sleeves to help guide, not control.
A little goes a long way!
A7: Engagement. If they aren’t engaged, they aren’t learning.
It's the⬆️of CriticalThinking+⬆️in📝skills. And there's STEAM/STEM: 🎥📲💻🕹📸🎶, etc. 👋🏼
You took my answer! Lucky I typed it before I read yours :)
A7: like everyone has been saying, passion and relevance. Both essential. Nicely said, https://t.co/JAgHvEsW6s
A7 Key ingredient = passion! It's our work to spark passion for learning in those Ss minds, so we Ts have to bring it!
