Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
Absolutely, talking with others about what I do in my classroom gives me all kinds of feedback about my teaching. I find this is a very important way of growing as an educator! #21stedchat#edu5720@JMcCarthyEdS
A1: I showcase what my Ss are doing as much as possible on Twitter. I also look for what other Ts are doing in their classrooms. It's always nice to get new ideas that I may be able to use in my classroom. #21stedchat
A1: I currently don't have my own classroom but I absolutely love to talk about what I do in each of my pre-student teaching classrooms and I love even more being able to talk to current teachers about what they're doing! I learn so much! #21stedchat
Yes, I think one of the best parts about sharing is seeing what you can remix in your own space, and seeing how others remix your own ideas!
#21stedchat
Absolutely, I collaborate with my team during scheduled times to discuss strategies and tools that are working in my classroom as well as get ideas. #21stedchat
Honestly, I keep doing it because I know it's a helpful form of reflection, but I really hate to write about myself so I don't do it often. Feels like a diary, and I am so not a diary-keeper, lol! #21stedchat
A2: Yes! Sharing what's happening in your classroom is a form of advocacy, and the more you share the more credibility you have with parents, colleagues, etc. Also-
parents love to know! #21stedchat
A2: Absolutely! As a teacher, I want to tell as many people as I can about the great things going on in my school. Perception is the reality! #21stedchat
We absolutely need to share what we are doing! Getting parents involved and sharing with colleagues creates a more positive classroom environment #21stedchat
I think it is important to keep parents and the community informed. Having everyone on the same page working towards the same goal can lead to special results. Communication is key. #21stedchat#edu5720@JMcCarthyEdS
A2: Yes! It is important for us to share all of the positive things that are happening in our classrooms! It's important to keep everyone informed. #21stedchat
A2b: With my colleagues, we have a pineapple chart for inviting people to observe our classroom. Parents are always invited to student project showcases. #21stedchat
A2b: I would love to invite more people to see what is going on in our school. Sometimes it is hard to coordinate but I think that is something I would like to make a bigger effort to do. #21stedchat
A2: I think keeping parents and your community informed is extremely important. Whether that's through a newsletter, social media, calls/emails, etc., it needs to be done. #21stedchat
A2b: I love the idea of inviting people into your classroom! Whether it be parents of students or community members, there are so many ways you can incorporate visits with the curriculum! Learning about handling money? Invite a banker! The possibilities are endless. #21stedchat
A2: Displaying gains is always a good idea in my mind.. "the proof is in the pudding" so to say. Everyone benefits from this information. Additionally, reporting gains helps to expose where we still need improvement, which is an added bonus in fostering new skills. #21stedchat
At first, it was difficult getting people to sign up because people are modest and think, "I have nothing to share," but at this point in the school year it has become part of the culture and it's not uncommon to get an email about a "last minute pineapple!" :) #21stedchat
A3: Twitter has given me a roadmap to greatness. The connections I've made have made me a better teacher, coach, and leader. I have truly found my tribe here!!
#21stedchat
A3: Currently, as a pre-student teacher, I am simply using Twitter, Instagram, and Email! I am excited to see what else is available to me once I am in the classroom full time! #21stedchat
A2: Getting the community inside your building is so important. Not only does it show them what’s happening in our schools, but it also provides students real-world opportunities and connections they might not receive otherwise. #21stedchat
4 ways ANY educator can be a LEADER:
1. Get CONNECTED!
2. Curate, create, & share valuable resources with faculty and staff.
3. Invite colleagues into your classroom to see awesome instructional practices.
4. Start a PD book study chat on Voxer.

A3: Currently, our school's newsletter and website are our biggest form of communication. All internal stakeholders are welcome to share teacher and student accomplishments. #21stedchat
A4 as a student I don’t have too much experience with this but I did have a class I observed where the teacher ran a class blog for parents to see what happened in the class #21stedchat
A4: My school system not only allows me the freedom to share my story, but when I suggested the idea of creating a blog to document this story, they encouraged it and offered to help facilitate the platform! Located in Maine. :)
A4: At my last school I was not only encouraged and allowed to share my story but also our story. It was good for me and for the school. My story was a collective one and all others were part of it. When you have a positive culture people want to know more! #21stedchat
A4: My administrators are my biggest encouragers. My principal was the reason I started using Twitter for education and she constantly uses social media to show how our teachers are shining in the classroom. #21stedchat
We must familiarize ourselves with and utilize the social media platforms our students and parents use like @instagram@Snapchat and @facebook
Many aren’t on Twitter!
#21stedchat
A5: I have encouraged parents to follow me on Facebook and Twitter and many have. They seem to enjoy seeing the updates and know what is going on in the classroom. I think they appreciate being involved. #21stedchat
A5: parents loved the transparency and also the celebration of student work. We tweet it, YouTube it, periscope it, hangout it, and have community events for locals to interact with student work. #21stedchat

Snaps can be exported to other sharing sites like Twitter, which is nice, but I don't directly connect with parents or students on Snapchat. Too private for me. Admins gotta be able to see it. #21stedchat

I noticed from multiple classes I observed parents are really thrilled to get to see what their kids are doing it makes them feel involved then they would have otherwise #21stedchat
A5: Our parents love being more informed about what we're doing. High school students aren't always the most communicative so they love feeling included. :) #21stedchat
From time to time I YouTube / Hangout Live demos. Tweet a notice out first. Usually draw and audience. Sometimes they fail too which is not all bad. Teachable moments. #21stedchat
A4: I survey parents and find out what they use...also remind to get info out all at once. Class website, FB pages, twitter, YouTube, and Snapchat. No instagram...I’m behind there. #21stedchat
Q6: Have you ever thought of inviting a politician (local, state or federal) into your classroom? (Without the media following). This was suggested by @Joe_Sanfelippo#21stedchat

A6 I haven’t thought of that before. But it would be good for politicians to get into classrooms and see what is happening especially before they make policy concerning education #21stedchat
A7: I mostly follow other teachers, but I do have some students that follow me on my profession twitter. I also agree, it is most likely too boring for them! #21stedchat
A7: Only Twitter. FB and Snapchat are for family/friends, not students. Don't have insta. The ones that do follow me probably find me pretty boring :) #21stedchat
A7: I teach 4th-grade and I don't accept friend requests from students. I encourage their parents to connect with me and share with their child but I think that the parent needs to be in control of social media. #21stedchat
I've heard of that but it's exhausting enough keeping up with one, haha! If students have graduated or I'm "friends" with their parents, then I'll accept a friend request, but otherwise it's a no for me. #21stedchat
Thanks for a great chat, everyone! Great to see how everyone shares what's going on in their classrooms. Have a great week, and happy Easter! Those on break soon, enjoy that too! #21stedchat
I wasn't in on the chat tonight, but I lurk here and am Kristin's colleague. The rhythm that works for me is to post every Monday (or Sunday night if I get motivated). I keep topics in a draft for when I'm less inspired later. #21stedchat
