Q2: Please share with this PLN changes you've made, or are planning to make, in order to respond to students coming to your classroom from trauma. #champforkids
  • Shapiro_WTHS Nov 13 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1 - Trauma informed is having an understanding of the various factors that cause stressors in the lives of students. Trauma response is a school wide program that addresses those needs and is able to react in a timely effective manner. #champforkids
  • saschnit Nov 13 @ 8:12 PM EST
Trauma Informed is about knowing but Trauma responsive is about doing and implementing. #ChampforKids
  • Toups_J Nov 13 @ 8:12 PM EST
#champforkids A1 trauma responsive and trauma informed? 1st time to hear of this. My guess.... One is proactive and one is reactive. #AlwaysBelieve
  • peterdboland Nov 13 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: Trauma informed is preemptive, you’ve done your work, you know what to do. Trauma responsive is cleaning up while or after all hell breaks loose... #champforkids
  • khoggardGRT - Moderator Nov 13 @ 8:12 PM EST
I think we are all in this together! Learning and growing in this area. That is why I was excited to open the chat to this topic! #champforkids
    In reply to @holliewood24
  • loliveira55 Nov 13 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1 Trauma informed is knowing what the student's needs/issues are and trauma responsive is actually taking the knowledge and responding to the students' needs. #champforkids

  • saschnit Nov 13 @ 8:14 PM EST
A2: We have held PDs and focus most of our decisions around being responsive. We look to seek a full understanding of how trauma plays into an incident and not just a surface understanding. #ChampforKids
  • peterdboland Nov 13 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1: By the way, I’m workingwith context clues here, afterall im an English teacher so please cut me some slack!!! #champforkids

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs tells us that we must first meet our students' basic needs before we can even think about teaching them. Q3: Please share some ideas you have tried (or are thinking about trying) to meet these needs of your students. #champforkids
  • Lisa42Slp Nov 13 @ 8:16 PM EST
oh such an interesting topic! I have a lot to learn here! #champforkids
  • khoggardGRT - Moderator Nov 13 @ 8:16 PM EST
What do these PDs look like? I am thinking like table top discussions of specific scenarios and responses???? What seems to work? #champforkids
    In reply to @saschnit
  • Shapiro_WTHS Nov 13 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2 - For me it has and will always be about knowing my students. It’s impossible to truly understand and react appropriately to problems if we don’t know the cause. Building trust and respect is key. Non judge free zone of comfort also plays a key role. #champforkids
  • MissKRafferty Nov 13 @ 8:16 PM EST

Everything comes down to building a relationship with our students. I just cannot think of anything more critical! #champforkids
    In reply to @Shapiro_WTHS
  • MissKRafferty Nov 13 @ 8:17 PM EST
I agree. There's a difference between knowing about trauma and actively responding to it. Kids need us to do both. #champforkids
    In reply to @loliveira55
  • holliewood24 Nov 13 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2) The majority of the trauma my Ss have encountered are school related traumas as a result of not having their special education needs met. I work to hard to know their needs BEFORE they step in my room and to openly collaborate as we begin to trust one another. #champforkids
  • khoggardGRT - Moderator Nov 13 @ 8:18 PM EST
I think using what we know to frame our responses is truly the key. #champforkids
    In reply to @MissKRafferty, @loliveira55
  • DiorioKate Nov 13 @ 8:18 PM EST
A3. Gotta Maslow before you Bloom. We have developed partnerships with many community organizations to support the Maslow needs for our students. Some students even volunteer at our community resource center. #champforkids
  • MrPStrunk Nov 13 @ 8:18 PM EST
A3: I have a survey for students to complete over the next couple of days asking about their perception of me, my strengths, and areas for me to improve to meet their needs. #champforkids
  • MissKRafferty Nov 13 @ 8:18 PM EST
I'm feeling the same way! There's so much more to caring for kids than just writing and implementing good lessons #champforkids

A3 My Ells have needs that go well beyond content knowlege. Some haven't been in a formal school, while others need to learn things we take for granted such as opening a locker, or moving from class to class. We take care of the most crucial needs first. #champforkids
  • Lisa42Slp Nov 13 @ 8:19 PM EST
A3 It is critical that we meet our students at their level and meet their needs. Relationships are so important as they need to feel safe and comfortable at school. #champforkids
  • peterdboland Nov 13 @ 8:19 PM EST
A3: I try to build a sense of community in each class... a place where we work our butts off but can have fun doing it... take your work seriously but take yourself lightly... #champforkids
  • MissKRafferty Nov 13 @ 8:19 PM EST
A3: Relationships. Relationships. Relationships. One kid might need a hug while another might need a snack. We need to know our students in order to understand what they need. #champforkids
  • peterdboland Nov 13 @ 8:20 PM EST
A3: Everything in education is rooted in relationships... #champforkids
  • MissKRafferty Nov 13 @ 8:20 PM EST
Love this! Is it a survey you'd be willing to share? #champforkids
    In reply to @MrPStrunk
  • KristenSevinsky Nov 13 @ 8:20 PM EST
A3: let them breathe and have space. Don’t get on them over silly things. Ask them what they need. Allow them the space to have bad days. For goodness sakes, give them a stinkin pencil. #champforkids
  • khoggardGRT - Moderator Nov 13 @ 8:20 PM EST
Our Ss bring withthem into our classrooms so many ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences). Q4 - What resources do you have in your building to support students with these experiences? #champforkids
  • saschnit Nov 13 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3: relationships and student voice. Show them they belong and have just as an important role as the next person in the room, including adults. #ChampforKids
  • MissKRafferty Nov 13 @ 8:21 PM EST
Yes. Absolutely. Not everyone needs the same thing, but everyone needs something. #champforkids
    In reply to @khoggardGRT, @loliveira55
  • Shapiro_WTHS Nov 13 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3 - List that I use: 1. Promise to always be happy. 2. Positive word everyday that kids define. 3. Never allow negativity to end a class. 4. Share a personal connection with every student. 5. R’s before grades 6. Praise before punishment. 7. Kindness wins! #champforkids
  • Toups_J Nov 13 @ 8:21 PM EST
#champforkids A3 My 1st rule #AlwaysBelieve in Yourself impacts my Ss. Since 1990 this has changed my Ss lives. When you #BELIEVE in who you are, your life is transformed. It is the keystone to your very being. You can't make a St do this, but you can inspire them by LOVE.
  • holliewood24 Nov 13 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3) Snacks, mindfulness, empathy, humour, No Homework, & judgement free zone #ChampForKids
  • saschnit Nov 13 @ 8:22 PM EST
A4: Behavior specialists and social workers.. many adults for Ss to go to when in need of needing to talk to someone about an issue/concern. #ChampforKids
  • MrPStrunk Nov 13 @ 8:22 PM EST
    It's the #waledchat way! lol! #champforkids
    In reply to @loliveira55
  • MissKRafferty Nov 13 @ 8:22 PM EST
YES!! Give them a pencil. Give them two pencils. Give them however many pencils they need in order to know that you care about them. #champforkids
    In reply to @KristenSevinsky
  • khoggardGRT - Moderator Nov 13 @ 8:22 PM EST
That is a big part of #champforkids is understanding that ALL kids have specific needs and those needs may not always stand out in the same ways. We have to keep our eyes and ears open, form relationships and use those to support varying needs!
    In reply to @MissKRafferty, @loliveira55
  • khoggardGRT - Moderator Nov 13 @ 8:23 PM EST
YES! Give them the dang pencils! #champforkids

  • khoggardGRT - Moderator Nov 13 @ 8:23 PM EST
I think everyone would love to hear more about some of these! #champforkids
    In reply to @PreK33, @saschnit
  • DiorioKate Nov 13 @ 8:23 PM EST
A4. We have developed spaces for students to regulate and have a greater understanding that students sometimes just need a break like taking a walk. Many times behavior is predictable is you know a student’s story. #allaboutrelationships #champforkids
  • Toups_J Nov 13 @ 8:23 PM EST
#champforkids A4 the greatest resource of any school to deal with troubled Ss is EMPATHETIC Educators. Tell your Story to your Ss. Let them know you walked in thier shoes. Love them for who they are. #AlwaysBelieve
  • Shapiro_WTHS Nov 13 @ 8:24 PM EST
A4 - Sap team, school psychologist, many after school activities that promote pride and feelings of self-worth. We also do school wide positive activities. Gratitude grams!! #champforkids
  • timwolffSSD Nov 13 @ 8:24 PM EST
No seriously, give the kid a pencil. Or 2. #champforkids
    In reply to @khoggardGRT, @MissKRafferty, @KristenSevinsky
  • MissKRafferty Nov 13 @ 8:25 PM EST
It absolutely can. In the face of trauma kids need to know that someone cares. They especially need to know that someone cares enough to take action even if that action is just listening #champforkids
    In reply to @PreK33, @loliveira55
  • holliewood24 Nov 13 @ 8:25 PM EST
I don't understand teachers who don't give a pencil. I make it a game: I give them a pencil & then tell them to hide it in a special place that only they know so that they will have it everytime they walk into my room. #champforkids
    In reply to @MissKRafferty, @KristenSevinsky
  • MissKRafferty Nov 13 @ 8:26 PM EST
Preach! I'd rather lose a bucketful of pencils than a single relationship with a student. #GiveThemAPencil #ChampForKids

Thinking about factors that support resilience in our Ss (making connections, moving toward goals, self-reflection, nurturing pos self view, just a few) Q6 - Knowing this about your Ss ,what steps do you intend to take, moving forward to help ALL of your students? #champforkids
  • peterdboland Nov 13 @ 8:26 PM EST
A4: At Thomas El-Salome’s school instead of going after kids for wrinkled shirts they actually iron them for students... teachers who are servant-leaders!!!That’s what Thanksgiving is all about Charlie Brown!!!#champforkids
  • Shapiro_WTHS Nov 13 @ 8:27 PM EST
A4b - Frequently we forget the power of a love and kindness. Every student needs to feel secure and welcome in class and school. While not everyone will show it, the human condition requires feelings of belonging. #champforkids
