Q1 - The Ss walking through our doors every day are changing in their needs from us. What they require is vastly different than it was several years ago.
Q1: Please share what your understanding is of the difference between trauma-informed and trauma-responsive. #champforkids
Hello my fluffy, feathered, and scholarly friends! Kristen here from PA. I teach 6th grade science and shenanigans and occasionally stand in as the 6th grade match maker... 😂😂😂 #champforkids
Q1 - The Ss walking through our doors every day are changing in their needs from us. What they require is vastly different than it was several years ago.
Q1: Please share what your understanding is of the difference between trauma-informed and trauma-responsive. #champforkids
Q2: Please share with this PLN changes you've made, or are planning to make, in order to respond to students coming to your classroom from trauma. #champforkids
A1 - Trauma informed is having an understanding of the various factors that cause stressors in the lives of students. Trauma response is a school wide program that addresses those needs and is able to react in a timely effective manner. #champforkids
A1: Trauma informed is preemptive, you’ve done your work, you know what to do. Trauma responsive is cleaning up while or after all hell breaks loose... #champforkids
A1 Trauma informed is knowing what the student's needs/issues are and trauma responsive is actually taking the knowledge and responding to the students' needs. #champforkids
A2: We have held PDs and focus most of our decisions around being responsive. We look to seek a full understanding of how trauma plays into an incident and not just a surface understanding. #ChampforKids
I have also been nominated as the stand in voice for @Rdene915. She’s only the person who tells me where I need to be each night! Without her, I’d be chatting about which muscles you need to activate to walk... 😂 just in case you were wondering.... #champforkids
A2. We have created a team of teachers called CARES. We are led by a mentor in the field, share strategies, participate in book studies. We are in the process of developing a weekly strategies of best practices. #champforkids
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs tells us that we must first meet our students' basic needs before we can even think about teaching them.
Q3: Please share some ideas you have tried (or are thinking about trying) to meet these needs of your students.
#champforkids
A2 - For me it has and will always be about knowing my students. It’s impossible to truly understand and react appropriately to problems if we don’t know the cause. Building trust and respect is key. Non judge free zone of comfort also plays a key role. #champforkids

Q3: Please share some ideas you have tried (or are thinking about trying) to meet these needs of your students.
#champforkids
A2) The majority of the trauma my Ss have encountered are school related traumas as a result of not having their special education needs met. I work to hard to know their needs BEFORE they step in my room and to openly collaborate as we begin to trust one another.
#champforkids
A3. Gotta Maslow before you Bloom. We have developed partnerships with many community organizations to support the Maslow needs for our students. Some students even volunteer at our community resource center. #champforkids
A3: I have a survey for students to complete over the next couple of days asking about their perception of me, my strengths, and areas for me to improve to meet their needs. #champforkids
A3 My Ells have needs that go well beyond content knowlege. Some haven't been in a formal school, while others need to learn things we take for granted such as opening a locker, or moving from class to class. We take care of the most crucial needs first. #champforkids
A3 It is critical that we meet our students at their level and meet their needs. Relationships are so important as they need to feel safe and comfortable at school. #champforkids

Q3: Please share some ideas you have tried (or are thinking about trying) to meet these needs of your students.
#champforkids
A3: I try to build a sense of community in each class... a place where we work our butts off but can have fun doing it... take your work seriously but take yourself lightly... #champforkids
A3: Relationships. Relationships. Relationships. One kid might need a hug while another might need a snack. We need to know our students in order to understand what they need. #champforkids
A3: let them breathe and have space. Don’t get on them over silly things. Ask them what they need. Allow them the space to have bad days. For goodness sakes, give them a stinkin pencil. #champforkids
Our Ss bring withthem into our classrooms so many ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences).
Q4 - What resources do you have in your building to support students with these experiences?
#champforkids
A3: relationships and student voice. Show them they belong and have just as an important role as the next person in the room, including adults. #ChampforKids
A3 - List that I use:
1. Promise to always be happy.
2. Positive word everyday that kids define.
3. Never allow negativity to end a class.
4. Share a personal connection with every student.
5. R’s before grades
6. Praise before punishment.
7. Kindness wins! #champforkids
#champforkids A3 My 1st rule #AlwaysBelieve in Yourself impacts my Ss. Since 1990 this has changed my Ss lives. When you #BELIEVE in who you are, your life is transformed. It is the keystone to your very being. You can't make a St do this, but you can inspire them by LOVE.
A4: Behavior specialists and social workers.. many adults for Ss to go to when in need of needing to talk to someone about an issue/concern. #ChampforKids
That is a big part of #champforkids is understanding that ALL kids have specific needs and those needs may not always stand out in the same ways. We have to keep our eyes and ears open, form relationships and use those to support varying needs!
A4: Counselors, support staff, social workers, and the best flippin’ culture, faculty, & staff you could ask for!!!(in my humble opinion)... #champforkids
A4. We have developed spaces for students to regulate and have a greater understanding that students sometimes just need a break like taking a walk. Many times behavior is predictable is you know a student’s story. #allaboutrelationships#champforkids
#champforkids A4 the greatest resource of any school to deal with troubled Ss is EMPATHETIC Educators. Tell your Story to your Ss. Let them know you walked in thier shoes. Love them for who they are. #AlwaysBelieve
A4 - Sap team, school psychologist, many after school activities that promote pride and feelings of self-worth. We also do school wide positive activities. Gratitude grams!! #champforkids
It absolutely can. In the face of trauma kids need to know that someone cares. They especially need to know that someone cares enough to take action even if that action is just listening #champforkids
I don't understand teachers who don't give a pencil. I make it a game: I give them a pencil & then tell them to hide it in a special place that only they know so that they will have it everytime they walk into my room.

Thinking about factors that support resilience in our Ss (making connections, moving toward goals, self-reflection, nurturing pos self view, just a few)
Q6 - Knowing this about your Ss ,what steps do you intend to take, moving forward to help ALL of your students? #champforkids
A4: At Thomas El-Salome’s school instead of going after kids for wrinkled shirts they actually iron them for students... teachers who are servant-leaders!!!That’s what Thanksgiving is all about Charlie Brown!!!#champforkids
A4b - Frequently we forget the power of a love and kindness. Every student needs to feel secure and welcome in class and school. While not everyone will show it, the human condition requires feelings of belonging. #champforkids

A4 We have an awesome team of caring adults that include guidance counselors, phychologist, social worker, behavioral specialist, student assistance counselor, and many caring teachers and admins who do what they can to help all kids. #champforkids
I am so thankful for EVERY person in the #champforkids family! Next week will be a Thanksgiving spin. Can't wait to chat about how Thankful I am for each of you!
