Hello, #BmoreEdchat friends! Welcome to the chat! Please introduce yourself, share your role in education, and tell us about your most memorable testing experience.
Hey everyone! Justin, 4th grade teacher from Baltimore. My favorite testing story was the first test I took in 7th grade after years of Montessori. #BmoreEdchat
Hi, #BmoreEdchat! I’m Kathy, an elementary resource teacher in Southern MD. My most memorable testing experience was when I had to take comprehensive exams in graduate school. (Glad they are over!)
Hi my name is Emma Gristina and I am a student intern teacher at Loyola University Maryland! My most memorable test experience was partner tests #BmoreEdchat#ED446
#bmoreedchat I'm Eleanore! I am a senior elementary ed major at Loyola and currently interning in a 4th grade classroom. My most memorable testing experience was probably the AP exams I took in high school!
A1. Hi, my name is Sam and I am a student teacher in Baltimore County. My most memorable testing experience was the SATs (happy I don't have to take them again!) #bmoreedchat
Hi! Katie - 2nd grade teacher- most memorable test was Iowa Test of Basic Skills in 4th grade! It made me feel grown up to use a scan from #BmoreEdchat
Hey #BmoreEdchat Ben in Reno NV Assistant Principal @maxwellbulldogs Who created a lovely floral design on the SAT cuz they were going to art school & didn't need SATs #mostmemorable
Hey there, #BmoreEdchat! Crystal Shub, 2nd grade teacher in Silver Spring, MD-MCPS. Most memorable testing experience...probably when my SAT proctor was thinking out loud about her timing errors. #yikes
A2: The role is assessing is to get an idea of how our Ss at our alternative high school are comparing to peers at a comparable grade level. The data drives how we intervene. #BmoreEdchat
Currently using MOY reading data to rearrange reading groups and plan for instructional next steps. First, we celebrated the successes though! #bmoreEdchat
Hi, my name is Brigid and I am a student teacher in Baltimore County. My most memorable testing experience was a high school English exam. #BmoreEdchat#ED446
A1: The role is assessing is to get an idea of how our Ss at our alternative high school are comparing to peers at a comparable grade level. The data drives how we intervene. #BmoreEdchat
A1: The role assessment has in MY classroom is to determine strengths and areas of growth to inform decision making and instruction #growthovereverything#BmoreEdchat
A1 real answer is that assessment needs to what drives our instruction-assessment is more than PARC SBAC-its about formatives that happen daily-we talk about these in PLCs & work to make sure we adjust to ensure ALL kids can meet the targets #BmoreEdchat
A1: Ironically, everything and nothing. With 2% cap, it is literally impossible to put in assessment the way my colleagues do at a statewide level. Frustrating but understandable. #BMoreEdChat
A1. The role of assessment is to help measure where students are at in comprehension before the unit of study, during, and after, By collecting formative an summative assessment we are able to collect data on our student abilities, weaknesses, and comprehension. #bmoreedchat
Hello! Natalia from Baltimore, ESOL teacher. The most memorable test was National Board Certification assessment. 3 hours for 6 questions, strict testing environment. A great professional challenge. #BmoreEdchat
Hi I’m Nikki! I am an intern at an elementary school. My most memorable assessment was in elementary science when were asked to use knowledge learned about animal characteristics and adaptations to create a physical model of a new animal #ED446#BmoreEdchat
our grade level PLCs meet several times a week due to block schedules and we are working to make sure we follow that Plan-do-study-act model but its a work in progress-key is not just having a lot of data but data that matters #BmoreEdchat
Hi! Bri Lawler, student intern at Loyola University Maryland. My most memorable testing experience is taking the SAT and the ACT in high school. #BmoreEdchat#ed446
A2: Mix of both. All unit assessments are paper based. All district and standardized assessments are computer based. However, this creates a technology equity concern in terms of schools and families that have the tech available #BmoreEdchat
A2: None statewide, but many locals have started developing #healthed assessments that are "online" and go directly into the local data collection system. Great data. Great growth. #BMoreEdChat
A2: Summatibe are usually our county exams and I’ve started to use Interactive Notebooks for formative because it’s easy to organize content and drive conversations and revisions with students. #BmoreEdchat
A1 real answer is that assessment needs to what drives our instruction-assessment is more than PARC SBAC-its about formatives that happen daily-we talk about these in PLCs & work to make sure we adjust to ensure ALL kids can meet the targets #BmoreEdchat
#bmoreedchat A2 Students in my classroom have taken their ELA unit tests (multiple choice) on their devices. This past test we actually printed them out for the students before they plugged their answers in online, I think it helped!
A2) not going to lie- I like the instant results and analysis of computer based assessments, but student thinking is more clearly shown on paper. I also think many students put more effort into paper based. #BmoreEdchat
A1. The role of assessments is to see what information, skills, and topics the students have mastered as well as to see what needs to be reviewed. These assessments can help teachers for planning purposes. #BmoreEdchat#ED446
I try to diversify my formative and summative assessments into different formats to give my students the opportunities of differentiated learning, for some students might do better with technology version vs pencil/ paper version and vice versa. #BmoreEdchat
A2 all of above-working to have more classroom assessments mirror hi-stakes testing so students are limited by their lack of exposure to the structure of the test and the tech issue-key is use multiple ways to assess what students not only know but how they can apply #BmoreEdchat
A2: Formative assessments- mix of paper/pencil, tech, and observational. Chromebooks are new this year and we're in the stages of integrating it into our instruction/finding best ways to assess (intentional use is key!) Summative (county)-mix of tech & paper/pencil. #BmoreEdchat
Great point about students interacting differently with paper-based and computer-based assessments! Students don’t necessarily perform similarly on the different modes. #BmoreEdchat
Do you think we should be pushing them to use tech to take assessments since the PARCC is on the computer and has different features that they should be familiar with before the test? #BmoreEdchat
A2. I have used some technology-based formative assessments, but I tend to use pencil and paper assessments. The school I am currently at uses paper and pencil tests as Summative Assessments. #ed466#BmoreEdchat
#truth when students exposure to tech and structure of a test limit their ability to show what they can do then the test is really not a valid measure #BmoreEdchat
A2- Unit assessments and the like are done with paper/pencil, but formative assessments are performance based, often 1-1 or in a small group. #bmoreedchat
I agree with that phrase wholeheartedly! I believe in the assessment when I can answer the questions "How will I be able to use this data? & Is this data going to improve teaching and learning?" #BmoreEdchat
A2: Mix of both. All unit assessments are paper based. All district and standardized assessments are computer based. However, this creates a technology equity concern in terms of schools and families that have the tech available #BmoreEdchat
A1 English language learners take the annual assessment in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It measures their growth from year to year and allows to exit the program once they reach proficiency. #BmoreEdchat
A1. Pre assesments help to determine student prior knowledge, and other formative assessments help teachers to see the areas that students still need help with. #BmoreEdchat#ed446
exactly-we need to know what we want students to know & how best they can show it & then use those assessment tools that match that-its more than a multiple choice quiz #thinkdifferently#BmoreEdchat
A3: Tech for me is all about instant feedback & creating a pathway to a conversation about next steps. I love using @zearned to assess review math material directly aligned to our curriculum & standards #BmoreEdchat
A2: favorite formative - @Socrative because it gives quick feedback and I can display the data without revealing students names. We have meaningful discussions about the results which turns into error analysis
#BmoreEdchat
A2: We use all 3 in my classroom, but on our last math unit test which was originally completed on the computer, it was interesting to see the difference in some students’ scores when they did a re-take of the same test on paper #BmoreEdchat#ED446
I agree with that phrase wholeheartedly! I believe in the assessment when I can answer the questions "How will I be able to use this data? & Is this data going to improve teaching and learning?" #BmoreEdchat
A3. In math we use Pearson to give assessments on the computer. We assign a practice and then give a quick check that records their comprehension of the topic and collects the data for us. #bmoreedchat
A3: I use it to determine TSGI and differentiate instruction. It provides quick feedback and allows the students to reflect immediately on their responses. #BmoreEdchat
A3: This year, I love using Kahoot, Quizlet, and Google Forms for quick assessment. I also think a set of classroom Google Slides is a great way to assess easily. #BmoreEdchat
A3: I like to align programs like Prodigy and TenMarks directly to the content we're working on. So I get real time data on how my student's are doing. I also am able to differentiate for those who need more scaffolding or enrichment. #BmoreEdchat
A3. I have begun using the quizzes and exit ticket options on Google Classroom (@GoogleForEdu). The students are excited whenever they have the opportunity to use technology in the classroom. This will also prepare them for how they will take the PARCC exam #BmoreEdchat#ED466
A2: We use all 3 in my classroom, but on our last math unit test which was originally completed on the computer, it was interesting to see the difference in some students’ scores when they did a re-take of the same test on paper #BmoreEdchat#ED446
A1 Assessment helps to inform my students and I about their individual strengths and needs. This knowledge helps me in adjusting instruction to meet the needs of each of my students, and in setting appropriate goals #ED446#BmoreEdchat
#bmoreedchat a3 It always surprises me when math tests are online! How does this compare to paper and pencil where you get to see the students' thought processes of where they "show their work"?
A3. In math we use Pearson to give assessments on the computer. We assign a practice and then give a quick check that records their comprehension of the topic and collects the data for us. #bmoreedchat
A3. My students have had assessments on their devices for math. The downsides are tech glitches and typos. The upside is the instant feedback. #BmoreEdchat#ed446
A1: The role of assessment in my role as an educator is to determine if students are truly grasping the concept and what areas I need to help them develop. #BMoreEdChat#istc541
Ah, I forgot to mention Kahoot! Love it. With 2nd graders I often start my Kahoot sessions with the infamous--Remember, if you win, do you get a million dollars?! 😂 #BmoreEdchat
Personally, I work best on paper and pencil. I think it is important to give students options in how they are assessed. What works for one student may not be the best option for another student, just like how I may learn differently than you do. #BmoreEdchat#ED446
Student fluency with the tools on computer-based math assessments is really important in this regard. ‘Showing work’ on a math problem requires using knowing the available buttons on the assessment. #BmoreEdchat
You read my mind. I saw a blog post about it but it involved scanning each and every running record form and then using something like evernote that you can write on a doc with. That's too much work for me but might work for someone! #bmoreedchat
A4: We are 1:1 at @fa1_smcps so I require technology only in the classroom where all students can learn and have access. I provide hard copies of books for independent reading homework at home. #BmoreEdchat
A4: When I did not work at a 1:1 school, I tried to use the computer cart as frequently as possible. When that wasn't a possibility, I would project different computer features from my screen and have Ss take turns demonstrating how to use the features. #BmoreEdChat#istc541
#bmoreedchat a4 I would spend time in the classroom to make sure that students are exposed to the online testing formats BEFORE they take the real test. That way when test day comes, students know what to expect and are familiar with the formatting!
Great ideas for integrating tech with limited access. We can model to help students build their fluency w/tech (which is necessary on computer-based assessments)! #BmoreEdchat

My kids love RAZ kids, but not everyone can access at home. My school sets up a weekly schedule where every class has a chance to use the computer lab just for RAZ kids for 45 min a week. Kids love this time. #Bmoreedchat
A4: All about access & mindset. How can we create time in school to practice or complete assignments using tech? Why assign computer based homework if students do not have access? #BmoreEdchat
A4: Utilizing the technology in various ways in the classroom & providing opportunities for learning HOW to use it, helps bridge the gap. It takes time to do this, but it's important--not just for assessments but for being prepared for their future. #BmoreEdchat
So important to take the time to share the tools available on computer-based assessments. Testing time is not when students should build their familiarity with tech tools! #BmoreEdchat
A5: Does not match! We prep using practice assessments & PARCC examples but tech gets overworked & there isn't always enough devices for all kids. #BmoreEdchat
My kids love RAZ kids, but not everyone can access at home. My school sets up a weekly schedule where every class has a chance to use the computer lab just for RAZ kids for 45 min a week. Kids love this time. #Bmoreedchat
A5: Many summative assessments are computer-based (MAP-R, MAP-M). I prep students by showing them the different functions they'll need to navigate (drop down, select all that apply, drag). I also remind them that they have scrap paper to use strategies we've learned! #BmoreEdchat
A2) Hi my name is Sage Fuller and I am an intern at Elmwood Elementary. My favorite method of summative testing is pencil/ paper. It allows me to think my own thoughts and go back to check for mistakes. #BmoreEdchat#ed446
A5: it’s not how I normally assess but I try to use online assessments for ELA comprehension checks. They are usually lower DOK levels so I can help students practice skills with those and identify reteaching areas. #BmoreEdchat
Exactly! Even our students that may have access to tech at home may not know how to best use the tools for educational purposes, and other students may not have any exposure to ed applications of tech! #BmoreEdchat
A4 Provide practice sessions at school. Explicitly show the accessibility features and the layout. Giving links to parents to access PARCC assessment samples would reach some, but not all students. #BmoreEdchat
A4. My school provides devices to all of the students and these devices travel with them all the way through elementary school. However not all schools are as lucky which is a huge disadvantage to those who can not afford technology on their own. #BmoreEdchat#ed446
Hello! My name is Sage Fuller and I’m and intern at Elmwood Elementary in Baltimore County. My most memorable testing experience in High School were the New York State Regents exams! #BmoreEdchat#ED446
A4: Utilizing the technology in various ways in the classroom & providing opportunities for learning HOW to use it, helps bridge the gap. It takes time to do this, but it's important--not just for assessments but for being prepared for their future. #BmoreEdchat
Ss may not have access to tech at home but there are other avenues that they can use to access tech such as the library, a friend's house, cell phones (a lot of things are cell phone compatible)... #BMoreEdChat#istc541
I see you throwing some Depth of Knowledge in there, Alison! You make an important point about starting with lower DOK to allow for practice. #BmoreEdchat
... I think we can hold the Ss accountable to completing assignments and taking advantage of the opportunities we are trying to give them. Ss will find a way..they find ways to do snapchat, tweet, post...they will find a way. We just have to challenge them #BmoreEdChat
I like to gauge the student's emotions. If the student seems upset or sad or tired, then it's probably not the best time to assess the student. #BMoreEdChat
A6. Tough question. I encourage all educators to speak publicly about the inequities of the testing regime. And I’m looking in the mirror. #BmoreEdChat
Yes, you make a valid point. It's important to check the platforms and perhaps read reviews to see if the app is as mobile friendly as it portrays itself. #BmoreEdchat#istc541
Our #BmoreEdchat Q7 is focused on the ways in which we focus on equity practices in our classrooms— how do you make it work in your classroom for all students?
I like to gauge the student's emotions. If the student seems upset or sad or tired, then it's probably not the best time to assess the student. #BMoreEdChat
A6: Equity in education begins w/ high quality teaching & learning for ALL students. To promote equity I meet students where they are, connect w/ their families, & communicate their progress. Students need 2 feel empowered. If we focus on this 1st, scores will follow #BmoreEdchat
A6) This comes down to relationships with students. We have to know when to push them and when to give them a break. We also have to understand their background and how that affects their learning #BmoreEdchat
Reflecting on what the purpose of the assessment - is it memorization or higher order thinking? Give them the appropriate tools needed to be successful to accomplish the purpose of the assessment. #BMoreEdChat#istc541
A7: Listening to what each kid needs individually & putting together a testing environment which fits them. Thank you @ReadingReineke for moderating tonight! #BmoreEdChat
We collaborate with our ESOL teacher to try to find ways to eliminate the vocabulary barrier. We often use pictures as support in word probs & provide word banks for key words that determine operations (during practice) #BmoreEdchat
Hi! My name is Kate Dwyer! my school also provides devices for all students kept in individual classrooms! The kids love to use them, and I think there are really valuable resources such as, tumble books, and pebble go which are online books! I find it to be useful #BmoreEdchat
