A1) Assessment is used to drive instruction and understand what the students know. #BmoreEdchat #ed446
  • BDicksonNV Feb 7 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1 real answer is that assessment needs to what drives our instruction-assessment is more than PARC SBAC-its about formatives that happen daily-we talk about these in PLCs & work to make sure we adjust to ensure ALL kids can meet the targets #BmoreEdchat
  • ReadingReineke Feb 7 @ 9:10 PM EST
Hello, fellow test coordinator! Testing season is almost here! #BmoreEdchat

A1. The role of assessment is to help measure where students are at in comprehension before the unit of study, during, and after, By collecting formative an summative assessment we are able to collect data on our student abilities, weaknesses, and comprehension. #bmoreedchat
  • BaltoESOL Feb 7 @ 9:12 PM EST

  • miss_lynch129 Feb 7 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1: The role of assessments in my classroom is to determine what my students have mastered and what areas we need to revisit #bmoreedchat #ed446
  • BDicksonNV Feb 7 @ 9:14 PM EST
our grade level PLCs meet several times a week due to block schedules and we are working to make sure we follow that Plan-do-study-act model but its a work in progress-key is not just having a lot of data but data that matters #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @ShubCrys
  • melissa_mulieri Feb 7 @ 9:15 PM EST
A2. All of the above. The learners needs should be considered. Different modes have different purposes/values. #BmoreEdchat
  • briannelawler Feb 7 @ 9:15 PM EST
Hi! Bri Lawler, student intern at Loyola University Maryland. My most memorable testing experience is taking the SAT and the ACT in high school. #BmoreEdchat #ed446
  • justincholbrook - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:15 PM EST
A2: Mix of both. All unit assessments are paper based. All district and standardized assessments are computer based. However, this creates a technology equity concern in terms of schools and families that have the tech available #BmoreEdchat
  • MDPhysEd Feb 7 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: None statewide, but many locals have started developing #healthed assessments that are "online" and go directly into the local data collection system. Great data. Great growth. #BMoreEdChat
  • Sayers_ELA Feb 7 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: Summatibe are usually our county exams and I’ve started to use Interactive Notebooks for formative because it’s easy to organize content and drive conversations and revisions with students. #BmoreEdchat
  • MsEmmaGristina Feb 7 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2. Our preassessments are usually paper and pencil but post assessments are half paper pencil and half online on the computer #BmoreEdchat #ED446
  • ReadingReineke Feb 7 @ 9:16 PM EST
I love your phrase— ‘data that matters.’ So important to use assessments not to jump through hoops, but instead to drive learning. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @BDicksonNV, @ShubCrys
  • MarkLewisLUM Feb 7 @ 9:16 PM EST
Thanks for highlighting formative assessments. They are so much more important than point-in-time assessments. #BmoreEdChat
  • ms_ryan_ Feb 7 @ 9:16 PM EST
#bmoreedchat A2 Students in my classroom have taken their ELA unit tests (multiple choice) on their devices. This past test we actually printed them out for the students before they plugged their answers in online, I think it helped!
  • kstoryscotti Feb 7 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2) not going to lie- I like the instant results and analysis of computer based assessments, but student thinking is more clearly shown on paper. I also think many students put more effort into paper based. #BmoreEdchat
  • MissKConnor Feb 7 @ 9:17 PM EST
A1. The role of assessments is to see what information, skills, and topics the students have mastered as well as to see what needs to be reviewed. These assessments can help teachers for planning purposes. #BmoreEdchat #ED446
  • Ms_Miara Feb 7 @ 9:17 PM EST
I try to diversify my formative and summative assessments into different formats to give my students the opportunities of differentiated learning, for some students might do better with technology version vs pencil/ paper version and vice versa. #BmoreEdchat
  • BDicksonNV Feb 7 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2 all of above-working to have more classroom assessments mirror hi-stakes testing so students are limited by their lack of exposure to the structure of the test and the tech issue-key is use multiple ways to assess what students not only know but how they can apply #BmoreEdchat
  • MsHannahBrown96 Feb 7 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: Most assessments I feel are formative and paper and pencil! #ED446 #BmoreEdchat
  • ShubCrys Feb 7 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: Formative assessments- mix of paper/pencil, tech, and observational. Chromebooks are new this year and we're in the stages of integrating it into our instruction/finding best ways to assess (intentional use is key!) Summative (county)-mix of tech & paper/pencil. #BmoreEdchat
  • jazzmeister2013 Feb 7 @ 9:19 PM EST
Hey #bmoreedchat leaders! Greg- K, #TeamFelegy. Checking in for some time tonight. Hope all are well.
  • ReadingReineke Feb 7 @ 9:20 PM EST
Great point about students interacting differently with paper-based and computer-based assessments! Students don’t necessarily perform similarly on the different modes. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @ms_ryan_
  • TynesMath Feb 7 @ 9:20 PM EST
Do you think we should be pushing them to use tech to take assessments since the PARCC is on the computer and has different features that they should be familiar with before the test? #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @Ms_Miara
  • MissKConnor Feb 7 @ 9:20 PM EST
A2. I have used some technology-based formative assessments, but I tend to use pencil and paper assessments. The school I am currently at uses paper and pencil tests as Summative Assessments. #ed466 #BmoreEdchat

  • Fitbound Feb 7 @ 9:21 PM EST
Fitbound here a little late but ready to chat. #BmoreEdchat
  • BDicksonNV Feb 7 @ 9:21 PM EST
#truth when students exposure to tech and structure of a test limit their ability to show what they can do then the test is really not a valid measure #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @justincholbrook
  • jazzmeister2013 Feb 7 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2- Unit assessments and the like are done with paper/pencil, but formative assessments are performance based, often 1-1 or in a small group. #bmoreedchat
  • ShubCrys Feb 7 @ 9:21 PM EST
I agree with that phrase wholeheartedly! I believe in the assessment when I can answer the questions "How will I be able to use this data? & Is this data going to improve teaching and learning?" #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @ReadingReineke, @BDicksonNV
  • MarkLewisLUM Feb 7 @ 9:21 PM EST
The technology gap maps onto other gaps, such as income, so another symptom of educational inequities in our society. #BmoreEdChat
  • MissKConnor Feb 7 @ 9:22 PM EST
What is your opinion of this type of assessment compared to other forms? #BmoreEdchat #ED446
    In reply to @MsHannahBrown96
  • ReadingReineke Feb 7 @ 9:22 PM EST
Great point about intentionality of tech integration and assessment. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @ShubCrys
  • BaltoESOL Feb 7 @ 9:22 PM EST
A1 English language learners take the annual assessment in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It measures their growth from year to year and allows to exit the program once they reach proficiency. #BmoreEdchat
  • briannelawler Feb 7 @ 9:23 PM EST
A1. Pre assesments help to determine student prior knowledge, and other formative assessments help teachers to see the areas that students still need help with. #BmoreEdchat #ed446
  • BDicksonNV Feb 7 @ 9:24 PM EST
exactly-we need to know what we want students to know & how best they can show it & then use those assessment tools that match that-its more than a multiple choice quiz #thinkdifferently #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @ShubCrys, @ReadingReineke
  • justincholbrook - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3: Tech for me is all about instant feedback & creating a pathway to a conversation about next steps. I love using @zearned to assess review math material directly aligned to our curriculum & standards #BmoreEdchat
  • TynesMath Feb 7 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2: favorite formative - @Socrative because it gives quick feedback and I can display the data without revealing students names. We have meaningful discussions about the results which turns into error analysis #BmoreEdchat
  • kstoryscotti Feb 7 @ 9:24 PM EST
Technology has certainly made running records much easier! #BmoreEdchat
  • KaitlynnWelly1 Feb 7 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2: We use all 3 in my classroom, but on our last math unit test which was originally completed on the computer, it was interesting to see the difference in some students’ scores when they did a re-take of the same test on paper #BmoreEdchat #ED446
  • Fitbound Feb 7 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: also important to use it in exercise. Can we calculate, record, and analyze the amount they are moving and the effects it had. #BmoreEdchat
  • ReadingReineke Feb 7 @ 9:25 PM EST
Great questions to ask both at the planning stage of assessment! #bmoreEdchat
    • ShubCrys Feb 7 @ 9:21 PM EST

  • Ms_Miara Feb 7 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3. In math we use Pearson to give assessments on the computer. We assign a practice and then give a quick check that records their comprehension of the topic and collects the data for us. #bmoreedchat
  • TynesMath Feb 7 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: I use it to determine TSGI and differentiate instruction. It provides quick feedback and allows the students to reflect immediately on their responses. #BmoreEdchat
  • SaraHolm15 Feb 7 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3 I started using @esgisoftware this year and it's a game changer. I do a lot of formative assessing using @Seesaw. The kids love both! #bmoreedchat
  • Sayers_ELA Feb 7 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3: This year, I love using Kahoot, Quizlet, and Google Forms for quick assessment. I also think a set of classroom Google Slides is a great way to assess easily. #BmoreEdchat
  • kstoryscotti Feb 7 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3) I think the instant results for today’s kids is important. They can immediately see and track their growth. #BmoreEdchat
  • TynesMath Feb 7 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3: I also like to use it to allow students to be able to work at their own pace and reflect on their work #BmoreEdchat
  • BDicksonNV Feb 7 @ 9:27 PM EST
hey #BmoreEdchat thanks for the great inspiration & ideas! gotta roll out early & start dinner! thanks for the awesome

Do you use Fountas and Pinnell? dra? I'm interested in digital running records but am not there yet! :) #bmoreedchat
    In reply to @kstoryscotti
  • ShubCrys Feb 7 @ 9:27 PM EST
A3: I like to align programs like Prodigy and TenMarks directly to the content we're working on. So I get real time data on how my student's are doing. I also am able to differentiate for those who need more scaffolding or enrichment. #BmoreEdchat
  • MissKConnor Feb 7 @ 9:28 PM EST
A3. I have begun using the quizzes and exit ticket options on Google Classroom (@GoogleForEdu). The students are excited whenever they have the opportunity to use technology in the classroom. This will also prepare them for how they will take the PARCC exam #BmoreEdchat #ED466

A1 Assessment helps to inform my students and I about their individual strengths and needs. This knowledge helps me in adjusting instruction to meet the needs of each of my students, and in setting appropriate goals #ED446 #BmoreEdchat
  • ReadingReineke Feb 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
Let’s add equity to the discussion of assessment in our #BmoreEdchat conversation!
  • ms_ryan_ Feb 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
#bmoreedchat a3 It always surprises me when math tests are online! How does this compare to paper and pencil where you get to see the students' thought processes of where they "show their work"?
  • MarkLewisLUM Feb 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
    Are the results useful? #BmoreEdChat
    • Ms_Miara Feb 7 @ 9:25 PM EST

    In reply to @Sayers_ELA
  • MissKConnor Feb 7 @ 9:31 PM EST
Personally, I work best on paper and pencil. I think it is important to give students options in how they are assessed. What works for one student may not be the best option for another student, just like how I may learn differently than you do. #BmoreEdchat #ED446
    In reply to @TynesMath
  • ReadingReineke Feb 7 @ 9:32 PM EST
Student fluency with the tools on computer-based math assessments is really important in this regard. ‘Showing work’ on a math problem requires using knowing the available buttons on the assessment. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @ms_ryan_
  • SaraHolm15 Feb 7 @ 9:32 PM EST
You read my mind. I saw a blog post about it but it involved scanning each and every running record form and then using something like evernote that you can write on a doc with. That's too much work for me but might work for someone! #bmoreedchat
    In reply to @kstoryscotti
  • NJamiesonLUM Feb 7 @ 9:32 PM EST

#bmoreedchat a4 I would spend time in the classroom to make sure that students are exposed to the online testing formats BEFORE they take the real test. That way when test day comes, students know what to expect and are familiar with the formatting!

Great ideas for integrating tech with limited access. We can model to help students build their fluency w/tech (which is necessary on computer-based assessments)! #BmoreEdchat
    • TynesMath Feb 7 @ 9:35 PM EST
A4: When I did not work at a 1:1 school, I tried to use the computer cart as frequently as possible. When that wasn't a possibility, I would project different computer features from my screen and have Ss take turns demonstrating how to use the features. #BmoreEdChat #istc541

My kids love RAZ kids, but not everyone can access at home. My school sets up a weekly schedule where every class has a chance to use the computer lab just for RAZ kids for 45 min a week. Kids love this time. #Bmoreedchat
  • justincholbrook - Moderator Feb 7 @ 9:38 PM EST
A4: All about access & mindset. How can we create time in school to practice or complete assignments using tech? Why assign computer based homework if students do not have access? #BmoreEdchat
  • ShubCrys Feb 7 @ 9:38 PM EST
A4: Utilizing the technology in various ways in the classroom & providing opportunities for learning HOW to use it, helps bridge the gap. It takes time to do this, but it's important--not just for assessments but for being prepared for their future. #BmoreEdchat

So important to take the time to share the tools available on computer-based assessments. Testing time is not when students should build their familiarity with tech tools! #BmoreEdchat

  • ReadingReineke Feb 7 @ 9:41 PM EST
Great point! Not all students have tech available at home— an important point for teachers to remember. #BmoreEdchat

A2 My school uses mainly technology-based assessments for summative, and pencil/paper assessments for formative #BmoreEdChat #ED446
  • ShubCrys Feb 7 @ 9:42 PM EST
A5: Many summative assessments are computer-based (MAP-R, MAP-M). I prep students by showing them the different functions they'll need to navigate (drop down, select all that apply, drag). I also remind them that they have scrap paper to use strategies we've learned! #BmoreEdchat
  • sagefuller15 Feb 7 @ 9:42 PM EST
A2) Hi my name is Sage Fuller and I am an intern at Elmwood Elementary. My favorite method of summative testing is pencil/ paper. It allows me to think my own thoughts and go back to check for mistakes. #BmoreEdchat #ed446
  • Sayers_ELA Feb 7 @ 9:42 PM EST
A5: it’s not how I normally assess but I try to use online assessments for ELA comprehension checks. They are usually lower DOK levels so I can help students practice skills with those and identify reteaching areas. #BmoreEdchat
  • TynesMath Feb 7 @ 9:42 PM EST
Perhaps giving them time in class to use the tech to familiarize themselves with it. Maybe it can be a drill for the day. #BMoreEdChat #istc541

  • briannelawler Feb 7 @ 9:43 PM EST
A4. My school provides devices to all of the students and these devices travel with them all the way through elementary school. However not all schools are as lucky which is a huge disadvantage to those who can not afford technology on their own. #BmoreEdchat #ed446
