Hi Mike! Hi Janifer! Welcome.
What platform do you use for chatting?
I use Tweet Deck when I do chats
I use tweetdeck and participate learning
We will wait a few more minutes, then I'll start questions. If it's just the 3 of us, we'll keep it to 30 min.
I saw the link to that, I'll check it out.
Anyone lurking? Come and join us!
I'm wondering where is ... she emailed me to join
Have not had great luck getting this going..maybe Monday is bad night....
Q1 Risk-taking is one a difficult LP trait to get Ss (& Parents) to develop. How do U get students to take academic risks?
Yeah, I'm not an expert at starting these. I'm glad someone is trying to do an IB one though.
A1: I model risk-taking and bounce back from mistakes. I encourage and support Ss in taking risks.
How does that look in PYP?
Ugh - it never types out the full @ when referencing a person...maybe it's a participate learning thing
A1 Just the other day a S took a risk and attempted to defend using feet to measure a pencil. A peer complimented him later
So in our last unit I took the risk of painting in class. One S used Wixie to create an artwork
In Eng class, I allow rewrites / encourage Ss to try something new - take a risk on style...write about a different type of piece
A1 Risk-taking in DP often means allowing Ss to re-work for a higher score if first attempt didn't pan out how they'd hoped.
I told him I disagreed, but followed his defense and thinking. Another S told him he was a communicator
That's pretty adorable. JUST the way you'd hope it would go.
Yes, IB kids have such a fear of failure...or fear of not getting the A... It sometimes stops them from being creative
Oh yeah, I encouraged several Ss to try flashback in their writing. I tried to get one to use flashfoward
Q2 What does "caring" look like in your classroom/school?
Caring is also begin open-minded - creating an environment where Ss feel safe to express ideas
oops meant being open-minded
A1 Caring might be as little as holding the door, or trying to cheer someone up when they are down. Empathy is part of this
My Ss - as I'm sure others have the same - are highly emotional. They need you to listen and be there for them.
A1 I almost wish IB called it "empathy," but I can see why "caring" is more all-encompassing.
A2, oops, Caring might be as little as holding the door, or trying to cheer someone up when they are down. Empathy is part of this
It's OK...you're not fired. :) https://t.co/WhZdJZKFaS

I did the same thing...thinking faster than I type.
How about caring in terms of student behavior (rather than teacher)?
Ss help each other and listen to each other
I think the way my class accepted and listened to the S defending measuring a pencil in feet shows a caring environment
Q3 Which LP trait is the most challenging to help students develop? Why?
A3 Balanced is one of the harder ones to truly teach as it is difficult to assess since we don't see Ss outside of school
A3: (sorry - I've been forgetting that part) I think the risk-taking is the most challenging. Why? Fear
I agree . That's my other choice. We don't often see their stress.
That's one I like to TRY to model...I talk about the different aspects of my life that I'm balancing w Ss https://t.co/jZ2aU2IDFG
A3 Balanced is one of the harder ones to truly teach as it is difficult to assess since we don't see Ss outside of school
A3 I'd also say Open-minded as during our appreciation circle Ss tend to not notice each other being Open-Minded much
A3 risk taker. They will develop more if they are not afraid to try.
Can you tell us about the appreciation circle
Each S gets a card with another Ss name to start the day. Then they watch them to demonstrate a LP attirbute 1/2
Q4 (last for tonight) What ways does your school promote the LP school-wide?
Then at the end of the day we circle up and everyone shares the LP they noticed someone demonstrate 2/2
A4 Everyone uses the common language, posted in all classrooms, we are working on building it in more school wide still
A4: same as - we have also done school-wide PD for Ts to understand LP.
We have done that too, sometimes we try to embed it into other PDs and make connections
Thank you for joining tonight. I'm keeping it brief for this evening. Watch for announcements re next chat!
Thanks for hosting, I'll try to make the next one too!
