#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Thank you for joining us tonight for #personalizedPD Our topic tonight: Teacher Burnout

Welcome to the #personalizedPD chat.
Introduce yourself to the group, tell us where you are from, your role in education, and how long you have been a professional educator.
Don't be a loner, invite some friends to join us.
Hi. Dan from Wisconsin. I teach HS science classes. The state says I have been a professional educator for around 12.5 years but I feel it goes back further. #personalizedPD
#personalizedPD hey good morning from India.I am a teacher by choice and by passion :-) been in the field for 25 years. I teach history and I love being with children
A1. Was always a thought. I liked helping peers understand things. I had fun basically writing lessons for my chemistry classmates to help them understand it. Many, including my med school advisor, said I would be great at teaching and I have loved it. #personalizedPD
A1 I always liked school and learning. I liked the environment. It wasn’t until later that I realized the awesome responsibility teachers have, and I wanted to be part of that. It wasn’t for the money (first year salary $11,500). #personalizedPD
A1 - I had a mentor who helped me stay out of trouble when I was a teenager. He was a 35 year Math teacher. I admired him greatly. He gave me my first job as a junior tennis instructor. He saw something and suggested I join the educator fraternity #personalizedPD
#personalizedPD A1. I always wanted to be a teacher . My teachers were mostly people who I couldn't relate to barring one who reached out to me and changed my thinking ...I wanted to try and do that
A1: Because being a kid is hard! So many teachers helped me become who I am, and I wanted to be that for students one day. And teaching reading is a great avenue to connect through! #personalizedPD
A2: Dude! How much time do we have? One of mine will be in the book. Another is when a S said, “Thanks for what you wrote on my paper. You’re the kind of person people want to impress.” Relationships, man. #personalizedpd
A2) Greatest moments are having kids exit my program and get back to Gen ed classes full time. Parents telling me that they can communicate with their child now. #PersonalizedPD
A2 There are so many. I always love to catch up with former students to hear about there success. It makes me feel good to know I contributed, even if it was in a small way. #personalizedPD
A1: I became an educator because i saw my dad model how serving others through education can make an impact. I wanted to make that kind of an impact! #personalizedPD
A2: Dude! How much time do we have? One of mine will be in the book. Another is when a S said, “Thanks for what you wrote on my paper. You’re the kind of person people want to impress.” Relationships, man. #personalizedpd
A2. I introduced my district to classroom tech. Used my own WiFi router and did things no one had seen. Now the district is 1:1. Implementing a portfolio assessment in science, now LA uses it for final. Working on changing attitude on assessment and grades. #personalizedPD
A2 - my #alted Ss who come back with college degree when they were told they’d never amount to anything. When I was an #alted MS T, seeing one of my favorite Ss in the news years later for a positive contribution they made to his community #personalizedPD
#personalizedPD A3. I have an image of a strict Teacher and I mean business ..but when my students come and joke with me and tell me their worries and share their troubles I feel blessed ...they do realise I am THERE for them .my mission is accomplished!!
A2: Today. After school, a kid catching up on old work shared so much about himself & then explained that he really liked our passion project because he got to learn what he's good at. He also learned about the most important person in his life! #TeacherPayDay#personalizedPD
A2 There are so many. I always love to catch up with former students to hear about their success. It makes me feel good to know I contributed, even if it was in a small way. #personalizedPD
A2: best moments are when the reading lightbulb goes off for a child and they “get it”, esp if it’s been a struggle for them; just saw a bunch of st I worked with as a reading specialist in 1st-3rd grade showing off their college sweatshirts for grad..proud moment #personalizedPD
A2b. With regards to Ss, being their influence to enter medical or science fields. Having them come back/connect on social media to chat. #personalizedPD
A2 Being able to connect with students and see their growth, learn from them, having the chance to make a difference, to share my passion for learning #personalizedpd
#personalizedPD A2.I have an image of a strict Teacher and I mean business ..but when my students come and joke with me and tell me their worries and share their troubles I feel blessed ...they do realise I am THERE for them .my mission is accomplished!!
A2 I am proud when I see the Ss sharing what they can do, learning about themselves, exploring their own passions, seeing them succeed and hoping that I played a small part in that #personalizedpd
A2: Greatest moments have been kids. A kid starts reading, a kid writes a story, a kid is kind to a friend, a kid finds their voice. Just got an invitation to a college graduation from a former 3rd grader. That makes me proud. #personalizedPD@log_lindsey@jillian_42

8% of teachers leave the profession each year. Less than 1/3 leave due to retirement.
Reasons: demoralization/lack of respect, focus on data collection and testing, lack of autonomy, and low pay.
Q3: Have you ever questioned your desire to stay in education? #personalizedPD
A2: there have been so many proud moments! When Ss start to make connections or transfer their learning. And my favorite when they come back years later to tell you about your impact #personalizedPD
A1: Struggling with AD/HD, I didn’t have teachers who tried to understand me. I hated school but I always wanted to be a teacher, I wanted to do better. I didn’t want anyone else to feel how I felt. I knew I’d bring a unique perspective and passion to the field. #PersonalizedPD
A3: Ab. So. Lutely. Not. There’s a great line in one of my fave movies, Heat, in which Pacino, a cop, and DeNiro, a thief, both admit they can’t imagine doing anything else. Samesies. #personalizedpd
A3 I have. I left momentarily, but it’s so much more than a job for me. It’s heartbreaking when educators are pushed out of communities they care about. It’s not just the schools. We care deeply about the communities too. #personalizedPD
A3) I have questioned my choice of school site and district. I do not question that I need education and education needs me. Administrators have a lot to do with that, as much as I allow them to. #PersonalizedPD

A3 Not education itself, but level, Many years ago, after graduating law school, I questioned about teaching foreign languages or trying to teach law courses, #personalizedpd
A3 - I don’t think I question whether I want to leave. I’ve had #alted Ss who have left, then come back later. When talking to them I always ask why? 9/10 times they say they knew what Ts were trying to do, they just weren’t ready for it. Good reasons to stay #personalizedPD

A3: Fairly regularly (due to decisions being made that are out of my control), then I show up for school the next day and know I couldn't be anywhere else! #personalizedPD
That was a brutal time that is still impacting WI today. I remember a conversation with @kennybosch about maybe getting into real estate when they got rid of us. I like houses so that would work, right? #personalizedPD
A.3 I left teaching after my 3rd year. Sold insurance for a year. Made as much money in one year as I had in 3 years as a teacher. I had an ulcer and my family hated me and I hated myself.
Been teaching ever since.
#PersonalizedPD
A2: There is nothing quite like inspiring students to want to grow. A love of reading, a newly discovered passion- nothing makes me more proud than proud students #PersonalizedPD
WHAT?! I pretty much have driven a trailer and a flatbed all over my county! I think there was a 7 year stretch where I changed classrooms every year. #stuff#personalizedPD
I wonder how close we are to more teachers leaving the profession so THEY don't get ulcers with so much extra added on & no time to do it. #personalizedPD
A4) Be active on Twitter, FB, etc. Stay open to helping others. Join a local group like CUE, or CoffeeEdu, or a patio discussion this summer, wink, wink, etc. #PersonalizedPD
A4 By being connected, building PLN, engaging in conversations, sharing our stories, so many ways to interact thru social media, conferences, book studies #personalizedpd
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
I see you! Over there, hiding behind that plant leaf, or computer screen.
We would love to hear your thoughts. Join in, or not, it's cool.
Friend I went to high school with had to walk out of her classroom for several days in AZ to try to get more funding for her students & teachers. Sent good vibes & a pic of my #RedforEd t-shirt to show solidarity #personalizedPD#littlethings
A4. Stay connected. Be a sounding board for those that need it. It’s tough to remain positive if there is something nagging. Don’t hold it in. #personalizedPD
A4 Never forget what it means to be a teacher. I read a great convo about this very thing today. Those in the classroom have the hardest job. Teacher leaders are simply in place to support them by removing all barriers that we can. https://t.co/998jmWV7Qb#personalizedPD
What happens in an administrators transition from inside of the classroom to outside, that they don't take their lessons learned as a teacher into their new role?
One of the best way we can support other teachers is to find ways for them to connect to other educators - the conversations I've had on Twitter have had a monumental effect on my practice #personalizedPD
A4 - I have coffee every morning with colleagues outside of my department so we can support each other, sharing ideas, resources and experiences. We connect each other to our PLN/PLC’s when help is needed #personalizedPD
A4: I'm not one to get into the political arena, but will support those that do! I think that for the most part, we just keep on keepin' on and let our actions speak for themselves. Fight the good fight for all the right reasons! #personalizedPD
Yes, yes, and yes. And I really think we need to take the time to tell each other that we are in this together. Here for each other. Willing to support what's right for our profession. Ready to do what is right for our students and ourselves as educators. #personalizedPD

Q5: By making statements like these are we reinforcing a mindset that it is acceptable for society to pay us lower wages compared to other professions?

A4+1 ....& share your successes and struggles w your PLN. Sometimes we get stuck & only want to share the good. Teaching is a beautiful calling, but it ain’t always pretty. It’s amazing the things my peeps have helped me accomplish with their support and guidance. #personalizedPD
I like the idea of removing barriers. Sometimes I feel like I have survivors guilt since I'm not in the classroom, but I love the idea of removing barriers over being a support. #personalizedPD#educoach
A5: Like @DanielPink says: “Pay enough so money is no longer is the motivator.” Using extra pay for new titles and roles is sometimes putting people in positions in education for the wrong reasons. #PersonalizedPD

Some teachers' Maslow needs could be met with a living wage. Some needs could be met with Pink's Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose ideas. Some need the time to do good work for their students instead of data work for their state agency. #personalizedPD
A5: Tough question, because while it's true that teachers do this job for so many other reasons than our salary, we also deserve to be treated as professionals. How do we rectify the two? #personalizedPD

Q5: By making statements like these are we reinforcing a mindset that it is acceptable for society to pay us lower wages compared to other professions?
#personalizedPD
A5) It depends on the time/place. We as a profession don't do a good job of promoting r value to society. They need us, but we don't push it. We need to promote r value. Twitter is 1 of those places that's bringing us together to promote this change in perception. #PersonalizedPD
#personalizedPD A5. Teaching is undoubtedly the most noble of all professions & only the ones who aren't passionate would look at the materialistic side of it . Having said that ,one can't deny you need money to live and yes the teachers are underpaid, these images hit it hot !
Q6: Fewer & fewer college Ss are majoring in education & many of those that graduate w/a teaching degree never become Ts.

How are we extinguishing the flames of educators? When you put a glass over a candle, the flame slowly dies. Making the glass bigger doesn’t remove the barrier, it just makes it go slower -> https://t.co/phmqg3S7Vh#personalizedPD
I don’t think it helps (neither does the idea we have summers off) but this kind of work requires a passion the money cannot quantify. Think about the societal impact we have. It takes dedication to be an educator. #PersonalizedPD

(forgot the PD the first time)
Tutoring and Twittering don't mix.
A6: I think higher ed needs to attract better profs. Create a pipeline to teachers in the field who are willing to lead. Too many profs have checked out or have been out of classroom for too long. #personalizedPD
A5 - as an #alted#PBL T, I make sure my Ss understand their projects impact. My profession is my project. I value my impact over my salary. I have people who make a lot more money and are way less happier than me. Plus I get every summer off #winning#personalizedPD

It's kind of like a catch 22. No, we're not in it for the money. Yes, we deserve to be treated like professionals. No, we're not greedy. Yes, we deserve respect. #personalizedPD
A6: I think we need to have mentor teachers while they are in college! College students need more training in trauma-informed/trauma-responsive and mindfulness. #personalizedPD

A6) We need more colleges to be prepared with the tools that we have in the classroom. We need to change societies perception of our profession. We need to be more positive about our profession. #PersonalizedPD
People need to stop blaming teachers for the problems in education. Most what we have to deal with (testing, mandates) come from people who have never taught. Treat (and pay them) like professionals. #PersonalizedPD

3. Offer multi-year contacts to remove the uncertainty of future employment.
4. Make schools fun places again! #personalizedPD

The real question is, why do educators need to explain that we're not in it for the money or that we're not greedy? What other professional needs to explain that? 🤔 Interesting points. #personalizedPD
And blame solves NOTHING. The only way to improve anything is to take responsibility and begin to work on solutions. Which is why we are here :) #personalizedPD
Another valid point, Dan. In a data-driven world when you can't quantify something people may not SEE a value, but they know it is there. #personalizedPD

A7: Too many to name...they have student-centered classrooms where inquiry and collaboration are at the core w lots of student voice & choice; students feel valued #personalizedPD
A7: John Skrabonja. Beth Canzanese. Gregg Francis. Casey Clements. Herb Holroyd. Tim Viator. James Haba. Each challenged me, valued me, supported me. I want to be like them all. #personalizedPD
A6. We have to change the model. Longer student teaching to get a better feel but requiring tuition to be an unpaid intern certain makes people think twice about entering a teaching program. #personalizedPD

#personalizedPD A6 . So for a different perspective ....in India
It's a profession which the women take to more easily as it is perceived as a " HALF DAY " job ,where in women can look after the home and hearth as well as the "outside".
A6.2 - Help them understand how to work with different personalities, performance levels and Administrators to understand what I takes to really be an educator #personalizedPD
A7) Mrs. Thompson, Euclid Elementary in 1978-1980. Dr. Berry, CSU Bakersfield, 2003-2006. They both showed me what caring looks and acts like. #PersonalizedPD
Yes, there HAS to be a better model for student teaching. Some programs can seem so haphazard and def not conducive to creating educators ready to step effectively into the classroom #personalizedPD

Diane Knutson-H.S. Band-She pushed us to learn more than we ever thought possible. #personalizedPD
A7+1...and my second grade teacher was amazing. I don’t remember one thing I learned that year, but I knew she adored us. I still keep in contact with my teachers & often tell them thank you, especially during this week. #PersonalizedPD
A7. In HS - Ms. Roberts, Mr. Franzmeier, Mrs. Duncan, Mr. Sweeney...in college Dr. Pickett (my advisor who “turned” me to teaching), Dr. Castignetti...Life - My dad (also a teacher) #personalizedPD
A7a: Maxine Moore-2nd grade teacher when my dad was killed in Vietnam. Her love, compassion, and going above and beyond were unmatched!
Larry Fletcher-H.S. English. He taught me that you could have fun while learning!!
#personalizedPD A6 b.secondly we have a complex , somewhat redundant education system, there are REFORMS BEING UNDERTAKEN HOWEVER, Underlying all of these complex layers of failing education sys in the country lies a severe lack of leadership .So it's a complex conflicting issue
I couldn't do this great job if they didn't pay me. I couldn't pay my mortgage with "a difference" even if that was what I told them I make. #personalizedPD

Maybe the situation changed? Teachers thought the country began 15, 20, 30+ years ago and thought they had benefits beyond the salary. Now many of the benefits are gone but pay did not make up the difference. #personalizedPD
