My soul is dying as I read the drafts of essays. We’ve had 2.5 weeks to research, write, etc. it’s like they’ve heard nothing I said. They can do it on formative work but can’t apply I need #tlap to cheer me up

A1: Self-care is important for educators because we're givers and we often don't know when to stop giving that can lead to stress, tension, and burnout. #tlap
A1: I feel that self-care is important for teachers because if we don't take care of ourselves then we aren't our 100% which effects our teaching & our students! #tlap
A1: I believe that self-care is important for everyone, not just educators. We can't help others succeed if we aren't succeeding. Also, to prevent burn out!! #tlap#selfcare
A1: I feel like our students are our main focus but if we are not keeping up on ourselves than our students are going to be effected and then the classroom becomes stressful or overwhelming. #tlap
A1: I think students can pick up on the mildest of tension and distraction on the part of teachers, and while I hope they understand it, it does affect the classroom atmosphere and learning. #tlap
A1 Educators are in the midst of many peoples stories all day long. The energy we absorb along with our own "stuff" can deplete us quick if we don't have a consistent self care regimen. #tlap#TeacherLoveCoach
A1: Self-care is important for your mental and physical health. Making sure that you are not burning out on everything because that will take a tole on your teaching and students will see that! #tlap
A1: important b/c if we don't, we can't do right by our Ss - it's like the airplane announcement - put the oxygen mask on yourself 1st b4 you help others - same applies - you can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself. #tlap

A1: I believe that educators give so much energy to their students everyday that they need some self-care to remember how important life is. Students reflect teachers, therefore, self-caring teachers will create self-caring students. Let's pass on good vibes and habits! #tlap
A1. The career is super rewarding and so mentally and physically taxing. It can’t be all work 24/7. It’s the oxygen mask metaphor. Take care of yourself so you can help others. #tlap
A1: Self-care keeps your brain from easily “flipping it’s lid.” When you’re well rested and in a good mindset you are so much better equipped to help kids who are communicating with behavior #tlap
A1 I think self care is important for educators because we do SO MUCH for others so much of the time that we often forget about ourselves in the process. We deserve the time out not only for ourselves, but to be better educators for our teams and students. #tlap
A1 All educators need to take care of themselves so they are the best for their students. We need to be the best we can be to serve our students and each other. #tlap
A1: Self-Care is important for educators because when we take care of ourselves and are at our best, then we can give the best to our Ss and fellow Ts! If we aren't taking care of ourselves, how can we expect to care for others? @thezenteacher@burgessdave#tlap#sanctuaries
A1: It's pretty simple...we can't take care of others until we take care of ourselves! We are not at our best when burned out. Even a few minutes a day makes a big difference. #tlap
A1: Self-care is important because, if we don't take good care of ourselves and give ourselves time to rejuvenate, then we will not be our best version of ourselves for our kiddos. They deserve our best. I oftentimes feel guilty for relaxing, but I shouldn't. #tlap
#tlap A1: self-care is important because if you have a negative attitude in the classroom that will rub off on the students. The students deserve 100% of your attention and efforts.
A1: Self care is huge! If you let the stresses of the day get to you, then you won't be able to give the students your all! You have to take care of yourself just as much as you have to take care of your kids! #tlap
A1: Educators cannot meet the individual needs of their students when they have not taken care of themselves. Students do not need educators that are stressed out and emotionally unhealthy. #tlap
A1 While we all know that our jobs are important and meaningful—they are also stressful from the demands of just teaching and helping kids...let alone meeting unrealistic demands of the admin, district, State etc. w/o self care we burn out and then aren’t effective #tlap
A1. Educators have to intentionally engage in self-care because we are always focused on others' needs and need to be recharged to keep pouring into others! #tlap
A1: Selfcare is so important and needed in education because we not only carry our water but the water of 100+ students who look to us as teacher, de facto parent, and support system. #tlap
A1: If you are not caring for yourself, you in no way can care for your students. Being all in for your students requires a happy educator 😊 #tlap#smsutlap
A1: When we take care of ourselves then we are better able to take care of and serve others. Our students need all we have to give and if we can't be all that, then we can't give them all that #tlap
A1: Self Care is important to have a balance between work and home. Needing to have a set time to handle each situation and recharge the batteries to be your best possible self! #tlap
A1: Cause if the teacher ain’t happy no one is happy. Or a title of a fun book...If You Don’t Feed the Teachers They Eat the Students. If you don’t like yourself you don’t like others. Take care of YOU!!! #tlap
A1 I think self care is important for teachers for all the same reasons as it is for parents. If you want to be your best and do your best for your students, then you must start from a solid, healthy and happy place... yourself! #tlap
A1: Self care is important for us as teachers bc we invest so much into our students and colleagues on a daily basis, that it if we dont pause for ourselves, we could easily burn out. If we want to be able to give our all, we need to make sure we rest and recharge properly. #tlap
A1: Teaching requires a lot of energy, enthusiasm, and mental quickness. :) If our well runs dry, then we can't give our best to Ss & Ts. Gotta fill up before dishing out! #tlap
Q1: Self-care is important because it keeps teachers & educators in schools where they can have the greatest impact. My capacity to care and love kids is directly tied to my own well-being. #tlap
So true. I see this with my husband who is a psychiatrist. He is steeped in other people's emotions all day that he needs a break to process and restore. #tlap
A1: Without self-care it can become impossible to focus on our mission. We can't be great mentors and educators if we are barely hanging on. Graphic Design, music, and biking the outlets that keep me sane! #tlap
A1: From someone that is currently running on empty, it causes everything to be out of whack. Your mood, your energy, your productivity & your desire to continue to fight those innovation battles. #tlap
Hello, my amazing #TLAP family! I am just now leaving work and am on my way to dinner with family who is leaving the country for a week. I am so sad to miss the amazing @thezenteacher and #Sanctuaries discussion! Sending my positive vibes and will read the thread later!
#tlap A1 Your students won't get the best from you if you don't take the best care of yourself. You must get ME TIME to take care of yourself or you will BURN OUT!
Teachers being happpy and healthy doesn't guarentee students will be, but it gives them the best chance. We model so much for our students. Leading a happy and healthy life is something we should model as well. #tlap
A1: If we don’t take care of ourselves we can’t give others quality care. Teachers often put others before self and our health suffers. We need to be first on our list! #tlap
A1: We cannot pour from an empty cup. How can we care for our kids if we don't first care for ourselves? Taking care of ourselves will only lead to more productivity, progress & positive impact in our mission to serve kids, our world, & the future. #tlaphttps://t.co/gmNg1qtP3O
A1 cont... I also find my best creativity and brainstorming happens when I'm doing something unrelated to teaching. Playing games, doing martial arts, running. #tlap
We cannot effectively care for our 20+ students if we do not take the time to care for ourselves. It will never happen. We are human first. Like my mom always says: be kind to yourself. #tlap
A1: important b/c if we don't, we can't do right by our Ss - it's like the airplane announcement - put the oxygen mask on yourself 1st b4 you help others - same applies - you can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself. #tlap
A1. The career is super rewarding and so mentally and physically taxing. It can’t be all work 24/7. It’s the oxygen mask metaphor. Take care of yourself so you can help others. #tlap
A1: Self-care is so important because we give and give to everyone else, but fail to take care of ourselves. It's sometimes seen as a flaw when we choose ourselves, but it shouldn't be! Can't pour from an empty cup. #tlap#Sanctuaries
'cause ain't no one else lookin' out for us.
We owe our Ss 100% of ourselves while there. But we aren't one-dimensional. I'm more than a teacher. I need to not only nurture but outright protect the other parts that make me who I am.
#tlap
A1: Self care is important bc our focus is always on others. You need to put on your oxygen mask to be able to put on someone else’s ✈️ help yourself so you are able to help someone else! #tlap
Hey all! A1: As the leader in our classroom, we must model for students a healthy balance of work and life. I'd love to see the tide change years from now when it is not rewarded to work yourself to the bone #tlap

Not all teachers realize this, though, do they, Holly. Then they "give it all" and then they're just done, out, empty. Not a good plan. Not sustainable. #tlap
A1: I pour so much of my time and energy into teaching. Sometimes it’s good to just unplug and watch Netflix or read a book. Everyone needs a break sometimes. #tlap
A1: Self-care is important to make sure you are an effective teacher and that you give your students the best of you every single day... If you love teaching, you need to love yourself! ❤️ #tlap
A1: Self care is so very important for educators because they give so very much of themselves day in and day out. Consequently, they need to take time to nurture their own well being so that they don’t burn out. You can’t pour from an empty cup. #tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
I love this, Stella! Yes! Our students are looking to us for ALL learning, which includes the way we care for ourselves, too. Great reminder! #tlap#sanctuaries
A1: Hi #tlap! Diane, Elem Principal from CT saying if we don’t care for ourselves we can’t care for others with all of the heart, courage, patience, and determination that is so often required in our profession.
A1: It's pretty simple...we can't take care of others until we take care of ourselves! We are not at our best when burned out. Even a few minutes a day makes a big difference. #tlap
A1: I believe self care is important for a teacher to prevent burnout, for continuous enjoyment of what you do and love, and for peace of mind #tlap#Conversechat
A1: You need some time to help recharge your energy and passion. Do what you love to do outside of education. For me it’s hiking mountains, camping and Mother Nature. If you don’t, you’ll look like me at the end of the week. #tlap
A1) B/c if I don't take care of me, I won't be as effective of a teacher as I would be otherwise. Self care enables us to be the best us in all facets. #tlap
A1 Self care is important because teachers need to have balance in their lives. They need to think of the needs of their students/colleagues and take care of themselves. True happiness comes when we fill our cups and the cups of others. #tlap
A1: Teaching is a job that can take everything out of you - physically, mentally, and emotionally - and if we don’t take the time for a little self-care we will burn out. #tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
I want to join #tlap tonight so bad, but I won't have any peace until this laundry is put away (and can't physically get in bed until it's done)! 😉 @thezenteacher@burgessdave
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
Plagiarism is one of the most teachable moments we have. Calculated “consequences” plus teaching kids to quote it, cite it and expand on it will lead to powerful learning. #LeadLAP#tlap#LearnLAP
A2: I would give myself permission as a 1st year teacher to pause and enjoy hot chocolate while reading a relaxing book under the blanket. This does not happen often, but I need to give myself time to be just Susan and not Ms. J. The teacher in me never takes a break. #tlap
A1: Self-care is important, because the job never ends. It’s never done. There is always more work to do. You have to balance the workload and the guilt. Good luck. :) #tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A2: prescription would read- full night sleep, workout/yoga, eating and drinking to fuel my body, and taking time to decompress without feeling the weight of my always growing to do list #tlap
Thanks! Carrot cake mini muffins and some gluten free chocolate muffins coming up to. Our feeder school lost a staff member last week. We are preparing some care packages for each staff member of the school in memory and delivering this week. #tlap
A1: "It's ok to leave the to-do list unfinished tonight. Read another chapter in that book. Play a game with your kids. Spend an hour with a friend without apology. Do a random act of kindness and share your joy with others. The to-do list can wait another day." #tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A2 Mrs. Huggins will not be attending work today because she will be enjoying a hike through the park enjoying nature, drinking a coffee and enjoying meditation music. #tlap
A2 “You are going to be ok. This gives you permission to do something totally meaningless: Netflix, go play NCAA March Madness 2003 on PS2, draw, play hoops...whatever you need” #tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A2:
1. at least 8 hours of sleep
2. yoga
3. meditation
4. gratitude journals
5. massage
6. facials
7. binge watching my fav TV show
8. playing with my niece and nephew
9. out w/ friends
10. reading
Too much? Lol :)
#tlap
A2: I give myself permission to go to bed before 10. Sleep is something that we always need to make sure we are in our best shape, and I am notorious for just doing one more thing, one more thing, and then its 11 or later! #tlap@thezenteacher#selfcare
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A1: self care is important to make sure you are bringing your best to school each day! Children can pick up on negative feelings! We should model good practices for our students. #tlap
A2: Oh my favorite @BreneBrown I give you permission to stop and breathe when you need to, to take ample time daily just for you, love yourself and all your imperfections without judgement and thank yourself for doing so. #TLAP
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A2: "It's ok to leave the to-do list unfinished tonight.
#tlap
A2: Bill you are permitted to the following:
✏️Leave work at work
✏️Workout
✏️Relax and watch awful TV
✏️Spend time with your family
✏️Be yourself for you
#tlap
A2: My permission slip would say, over and over again, "It's ok to not finish your to-do list!"
Sometimes, you gotta celebrate just making it through the day. #tlap
A2: My permission slip would consist of one word: Unplug. 💻📲. ((My mind won’t ever stop thinking, planning, creating.. and I never want it to. But I NEED to give myself permission to unplug)). #tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A1: Self-care is so important to educators because in order to fill others up, we often deplete ourselves. It's a job hazard for people like us who choose a profession of passion. It's truly an affair of the ❤️. #tlap
I would give myself permission to start running again. Treat myself to a training plan and start running :) (then enjoy a cold drink during a REALLY WARM shower)
#TLAP
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A2 My permission slip would say "show your gratitude for what happened happened today" -- I want to be better about keeping things into a positive perspective. #tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A1- self care is important because we can burn out easily. Problems aren’t an easy fix, we lose sleep over other people’s children, but our ❤️s r always overflowing! #tlap
A2: STOP holding yourself to unreasonably high standard! It is ok to not accomplish everything on your list. Go play basketball & then go play some more. #tlap
Love your book @thezenteacher and I think if you don’t take care of yourself and find balance, it can lead to a very unhealthy state. I was the migraine queen as a young teacher. I thought I could do it all and neglected taking care of me along the way. #tlap
#tlap
A2: My permission slip would say it’s okay to not be the “Martha Stewart” of school leadership. I need to cut myself a break and know that what I am and what I do is most often the best I can be. #tlap
Well said! Giving whatever we have every day with no expectation of anything in return (teaching is not transactional!) is difficult + so we need to be generous with ourselves in order to be able to be generous with others. #TLAP
You have the permission to do your best each day... nothing more.. (hopefully) nothing less- without feeling guilty. You are enough and so are your students. #tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A2: Wendy has permission to sit by the fire place and read from her book every day for an hour with zero interruptions. And I so recommend Brené Brown books to all of you!!! Dare ya to read them all. 😊 #tlap
#tlap
#tlap A2 My greatest ME TIME activity is walking 18 holes carrying my golf bag. I can walk 18 holes in about 2.5 to 3 hours. Once the time changes I can get to the golf course and walk 18 holes and finish at twilight Great time for me to reflect and think things through.
A2: Permission slip for self would read:
*You have a family. Enjoy them.
*It's okay to not get everything done before bedtime.
*It's okay to leave work at work sometimes.
*Naps are important.
#tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A1: Self-care should have a section in all EDU courses. It recharges the batteries and keeps the creative juices flowing. Most importantly, it helps us stay focused on the goals we have for ourselves and our students by giving us time to #reflect. #tlap
A2:
My permission slip for self-care might say:
There is no badge for being the busiest, but there is wisdom in appreciating each present moment, spending quality time with your family and friends, and taking care of yourself physically, spiritually, and emotionally.
#tlap
My permission slip would say that I must get as much rest as I do work. I often try to cram as much as I can into my day- usable hours can’t get wasted. #TLAP
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A1 It is way too hard to get overwhelmed and forget why you wanted to become a teacher in the first place! Self care is necessary to remember why you started! #tlap#conversechat
Oh my goodness, Roman, what a pure and generous heart you have. I remember when we lost Renee; the kindness of others during and following that time meant the WORLD. Bless you for your kindness! ❤️ #tlap#passionforkindness
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A2: Please allow Jackie to eat the dessert first, take naps when needed, get a massage once a month, use sick days when she is sick and to lay around and do nothing as prescribed by her self care doctor. #tlap
A2: “It’s ok that your to-do list will carry over to tomorrow and the next day...and maybe the next. Slow down. Look around. And go get those nails done!” 😬 #tlap
#tlap
A2b: You have permission to not like the massage that you got because it's strange having some random somebody rub your back. HA! I'll take the massage chair, please. #tlap
As a new parent, I often find myself caught between the time it takes to be a good dad + the time it takes to be a good teacher. I need to give myself permission to both spend time with my daughter when necessary + to have a full professional life. #TLAP
A2 Mine would say:
"It's okay to not be perfect. It is okay to sometimes run out of time. It is okay to think of yourself sometimes. Breathe. Smile. Be happy."
#tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
I even dream in full color. Many nights I wake up feeling as tired as when I went to sleep...bc my dreams are so intense--like an action movie. ;) #tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
OMG this is fascinating!! Long term health issues as a result of negative self-talk, inability to control stress, avoiding negative emotions, lack of social connection y más. #teachers we need to help our students navigate their emotions & thought patterns! #SEL#TLAP#langchat
A2b: also... you can buy that pet jelly fish and tap shoes and an accordion and an inflatable Floatie for the pool and... and... you worked hard. You deserve anything pink and flamboyant you want!! 😂😂 also, chocolate cake. Go ahead and eat as much as you want!! 😂#tlap
Q2: Brené Brown recommends writing hard copy permission slips for ourselves. If you had to write a permission slip for self-care, what would yours say? #tlap
A3: The aforementioned slippers, and popcorn, classic rock, hot coffee, and breakfast in a diner. Stillness & silence are also critical for my self-care. #tlap
A3 My go to self activity is running. It's the one time of the day that I know I have control, except for the occasional bike or car not paying attention. #tlap
A3 Reading, working out, meditating, and sitting quietly just enjoying coffee. They all allow me to reflect on the day. Be grateful and just enjoy being. #tlap
A2: You have permission to take a break, go for a walk/run and chill with friends. The work will be there when you return refreshed, refueled, and ready to go. #tlap
A3: Books are my love language. I love to read and I love to write. Whenever I feel stress rising in my soul, carving out time to do either of these allows me to breathe again. #tlap#sanctuaries
A3: Listening to music and tuning the world out is one of my go-to activities right now. Nothing better right now than an excessively hot shower with @pandoramusic blasting! #tlap
A3: Currently my go to is doing my 80 day obsession workouts on beach body and sitting in the sauna afterwards! It is nice to focus on me for an hour and a half everyday. #tlap
A3: One of my go-to self-care activities is sweating. If I am ever stressed out or needing a pick-me-up, I love to engage in some sort of physical activity, be that yoga or dance or running! I am always looking for something new to keep me feeling good. #tlap
A2: Your stress is not just your own. Build others up, let others build you up, and talk about your challenges. Learn through them, and maybe #treatyourself to another coffee WITHOUT the papers or to-do list in front of you. #tlap
A3: I needed this discussion because I currently don't have any or currently not using any. My tough September turned into touch October, November, December, & January. #tlap
A3: I am in a daily program with @JenPoulson called A year of Miracles. Daily grounding and balancing.. Mind , Body, Spirit.. CHeck! and my Mood Meter App!
Essential Oils always. trying to work in more movement #TLAP
A3: My go-to self activity is to go on Twitter to reflect and rejuvenate along with getting Chipotle, Starbucks, and going to Target on the weekend. #tlap
A3 To tell myself that the massive amount of work I have accomplished for the day is enough even if I have some time left. Then I refuse to feel guilty about it. #tlap
I am a FIRM believer in Mental Health Days. We'd take a day off if we had a cold or the flu or tuberculosis or The Plague. So why not when we're not feeling well mentally/emotionally? #tlap I took one in Nov.
A3: Being alone, even if it means locking myself in the bathroom - moms, you know. I need silence, even if it’s just 15 minutes. It calms and recharges me. #tlap
A2 exercise, carve out non negotiable home time, family time, but especially don’t neglect your friendships. That’s your tribe, and when you have friend time, you get to be just you. #tlap
A3 Being honest I haven’t done the best job of this in the last month with the whole tenure thing going on (should find out soon 🤞🏻) but til then anything basketball has been my go to self care—just shooting. Guess it’s the former college coach in me lol #tlap
A3: My two "go to" activities to take care of myself are reading, or going on a walk/run to burn off some steam. Both great ways to stay focused and keep bettering myself. #tlap
A3. Music, music, music. Yard work is a good activity bc there is a result from your hard work. Nothing mental...all physical. It’s good to turn the brain off. #tlap
A3: Writing and watching Netflix, 60 Minutes, Frontline PBS. I love documentaries because I used to be a reporter so it keeps me connected to the old me in some way #tlap
A3 My “go to” is listening to John Williams music or to Cello music during lunch and at the beginning of the day. It sets the positive tone for the day for me #tlap
A3: Watching episodes of Alias & Friends with my daughters, getting a gorgeous cup of coffee with my hubby, snuggling my dogs, taking 25 minutes to work out at lunch. #tlap
A3: Running is my release. Reading a book for enjoyment. Hanging out with my dog. All these things help me separate the stress of the day from my life at home. I helps me recharge and get back after it tomorrow. #tlap
A3: My current go to self-activities include yoga, reading, or cooking! Yoga helps me clear my head and leaves me feeling more calm and grounded and I just love cooking and reading (even if my reading list is mostly PD books). #tlap@thezenteacher#selfcare#sanctuaries
Oh gosh no! My husband and I did couple massages on our honeymoon - worst experience of my life! The lady kept fussing at me because I was too tense... I'm like, yeah - because I don't know you like that!!! #tlap
A3: Always love when @LBStrunk and I can go out for dinner. Whether it is Big Mac from McDonalds or a full restaurant dinner, it is just to be able to go somewhere after work and not have to worry about dishes. #tlap
A3: yoga!! I feel so much more relaxed and in the moment after I leave... puts things into perspective. Plus, love bringing that feeling into the classroom! Gonoodle, anyone? 😉 #mindfulness#tlap
A3: Books are my love language. I love to read and I love to write. Whenever I feel stress rising in my soul, carving out time to do either of these allows me to breathe again. #tlap#sanctuaries
A3 one of my go tos is to wake up 15 minutes earlier and spend that time in quiet meditation/prayer and gratitude. It’s time for me to just fill up before the start of my day. #tlap
#tlap A4 For 19 summers I travled to @campcayuga where I was the camp photographer. I took the pictures of the happiest moments of a kids life. WHAT AN AMAZING SUMMER! Here are some of my greatest pictures. You can see the JOY created in them.
A3: I have two. I’m a competing powerlifter, and being able to take out my stress on the iron is extremely soothing to me. Talk about endorphins.
I also take my wife and my daughters out on dates, separately, so we can bond away from my job. #TLAP
I'm right there with you! I've actually had to hide my phone and computer in another room, to force myself to fully disconnect...which is kind of crazy when you think about it.#tlap
A3: I would really like to pretend that my go to self-care strategy is healthy like going to the gym, but if I’m being honest, it’s more likely to involve dark chocolate covered pretzels and trash TV. 🙈 #tlap
A3 Go to the gym 4 times a week--running & weight room
It forces my mind to focus on the task at hand and shut out the other things cluttering my thoughts.
Also, I do love my yoga class once a week; it's so calming.
#Tlap
A3 Go To... epson salts and essential oil bath soak, by candlight. Helps with pain management. Also I change clothes immediately when I arrive home to transition to Debbie, not Mrs. B Mode. #TLAP
A4: Going to acupuncture has been a lifesaver. It gives you a long lasting zen type state of mind, encourages mind/body balance. We jokingly call it “acustoned”. #TLAP
I take a moment in the morning to drink a cup of coffee alone before leaving , do some yoga, and give myself a nice pep talk. I give them to my Ss so regularly.. I often forget to give them to myself! They change my day and I am a better teacher and a better human for it! #tlap
A3. Sunrises. That's my go-to. Even during the winter. I teach in a town on Barnegat Bay. I arrive a bit early, drive the extra mile past school, enjoy my Wawa coffee, and breath the salty air. Once or twice a month I'm there.
During the summer, I live for an LBI sunrise.
#tlap
I am so excited for the day you get to tweet that you're walking in therapy! You've got this! I love your resiliency and determination! You're awesome! #tlap
A3: Exercising is definitely the best way for me to start the day. Watching SportsCenter and The Big Bang Theory are definitely mindless activities that I enjoy. Also, I do enjoy checking the Twitter feed #tlap
A3: I am in a daily program with @JenPoulson called A year of Miracles. Daily grounding and balancing.. Mind , Body, Spirit.. CHeck! and my Mood Meter App!
Essential Oils always. trying to work in more movement #TLAP
A3: Attending one of my kids extracurriculars/spending time with my kids WITHOUT checking emails, to-do lists or reading required texts in between matches/events. Just setting school aside and being all in for them 😊 #tlap#smsutlap
1. Teachers have to be on their toes all day. It’s been said it’s just as stressful as performing surgery. If we don’t take time for ourselves we suffer. Our students will suffer too. They feed off of our energy, so we need to be in a good place. #tlap
A3: Reading things that don't have to do with school. I set a goal to read 20 books this year for my own entertainment. I'm finding it as a great way to connect with kids though. Talking about what they're reading leads to some coll connections! #tlap
A3 One of my favourite go to activities for self-care is going to the gym. It let's me release stress and gain some energy. I also love to read to decompress.
#tlap
A3:
Some of my go-to self-care activities...
Joyful movement each morning
Prayer
Movie time with my husband
Cooking & baking
Reading
Writing
Lounging
#tlap
A2 “Do nothing work-related from Friday after school through Sunday morning. You work so hard at this. It’s okay to take this time for yourself.” #tlap
YES! Reminding friends that they matter and are so dear to us is a fabulous way to show your #passionforkindness AND refuel the soul! Hugs and love to you, Akilah! #tlap#sanctuaries

A4: I don’t know why adults get away from play... maybe “society” says so?
Anyway, play is another release. We need to get out of our own way and enjoy life and the ride! #tlap
A2: Today, you have permission to take a moment for yourself. You may choose to spend that moment however you see fit, free of judgment or critique. In addition, this guilt free moment doesn't have to productive or benefit others. Today, you have permission to just breathe. #tlap
A4 We need to remember that play is as important for adults as it is for kids. We often think that all we need is work as adults, but it is important for kids to see us having fun and playing. Learning is not all serious work. Learning is a social activity. Let us have fun. #tlap
A4 Play isn't just for kids! I feel like adults disregard it because we don't want to seem childish or immature. We need to play to get our bodies and minds active! #tlap#conversechat
A4 I think play is essential to self care. That’s why hoops is my go to or drawing because I can create my own little scene of the world. Then playing games with people. Play is fun and makes use kind of forget the cognitive load we deal with on the daily #tlap
A4: Play is so important (you should check out my wedding story in SANCTUARIES) and I'm going to set an intention right to play more this week! Thanks, everybody! #tlap
A4 I believe adults reject play as it being too kid like and it’s something that must be revisited. Whether it be coloring, building things, etc all are ways to connect with our creative side which will ultimately help our students too! #tlap
A4: PLAY is so important to self-care! We have more tabletop games in our house than many game stores have in stock! We love to play, laugh, and play some more. #tlap
I play for entertainment... for fun... to connect with others and remember the joy in what we do. We are encouraged as “adults” to live by a checklist and rules- honored to be among fellow rule breakers tonight.. true learning is playful ❤️#tlap
A4: Doing things just to do them. No real benefit except that it is fun. It's disregarded because in the back of the mind we think of how many productive things that could be getting done. Feelings of irresponsibility #tlap
#tlap A4 PLAY is the "fountain of youth". My summers @campcayuga have kept me young in heart. A summer at camp recharges my teaching battery. Adults that lose their sense of play begin losing the fountain of youth.
A3: I have been using the @calm app for guided meditation for awhile. Bonus: started a Mindfulness Mondays before school program for the entire staff and student body! #tlap
A4: I think we live in a society where we are constantly moving from one thing to the next, always finding ways to make progress and advance in our loves. Play allows to us pause, and do something low-stress, just for the sake of doing it. Great way to tie in our passions #tlap
A4: Play is so important in self-care because it is freeing & can bring joy to a person. We tend to forget about play and leave it out because as adults we see it as "childish" when in reality we could all benefit from more play! #tlap@thezenteacher#sanctuaries#selfcare
A4: I think it is important to play because it allows us to take a break and let our creativity blossom. I started a paint by number when I had the time in July, and I am almost done. I think we fall into adulthood, and, unfortunately, play becomes diminished. #tlap
A4: Play still has lots of benefits for self care as adults. At the very least, it can bring out laughter, which releases dopamine, which makes us feel good. Play lets us tap into that side of us that is needed to balance our work selves. #tlap
A4: My husband got out our N64 and we played Mario Cart for my son's entire nap the other day. I don't know why we don't do this anymore... we should :) #tlap#stillakid
#tlap a4 if you have ever built with legos, created with playdoh or seriously "played" it is work! It is not easy! and we underestimate its importance!
A4: It breaks us out of constant structure and allows us to explore/imagine. I imagine many adults avoid play because so many view play as a "thing for kids." #tlap
A3 ok true confession.. I love spending time with my friends playing card games!! We laugh, talk and mostly soak up the love we have for each other!!#tlap
A4: Often we forget the joys of being a child. This weekend I wrote about my child who loves playing video games. It's not my ideal "play" time, but oh, the bonding that we shared together when I stopped to play with him! https://t.co/UKfgCdTOq4#tlap
#tlap A4: I feel like "play" as an adult is doing anything besides doing work/school work. Being lazy at home, hanging out with friends, or watching a movie would all mean "play" for me.
I love to play zombies (he is OBSESSED with zombies) with my 5 year old brother when I am home. But other than that, it seems as if I don't have time for it and that is why I disregard it. #tlap
A4 Play is an important part of self-care, but sometimes people are too tired. I❤️d playing with my kids when they were little. I ❤️playing with my Ss now (basketball, 2 Square). #tlap
A4: I don't know if it's play but I definitely try to find ways to take risks and get thrills. I need adrenaline rush's and I love it when thing happen spontaneously #tlap
A4: I LOVE TO PLAY. I took a Teaching Creative Dramatics class last semester that reminded me how fun it is to just free play. With no limits, so many ideas and inquiries happen. I nanny a few days a week for babies between the ages of 6 mos. and 3 y/o, and we play ALL DAY! #tlap
A4 We need to remember that play is as important for adults as it is for kids. We often think that all we need is work as adults, but it is important for kids to see us having fun and playing. Learning is not all serious work. Learning is a social activity. Let us have fun. #tlap
A4: play is such an imp part of self-care - changes the chemicals in your brain - I'm not sure why we don't play more as adults - I love playing with my nephew and colouring with my niece - and games nights are so much fun! #tlap
A3: One of the most impactful self-care activities for me is to simply put my headphones on, listen to music and step away from things for a bit to relax. #tlap
A4: Play is doing the things you love. I think we disregaurd this "play" part of life because we are too busy worrying about the "what ifs" and consequences instead of just doing it and worrying about them later. #tlap
We have to find a specific way to play. Something we enjoy and can fully engage in. Fully engaging in something will actually help us fully engage in our work when we get back to it. #tlap
A4: Play is an expression of joy for me. It either helps me to get to Joy , or I'm playing to release excess energy. I'm a BOYMOM x2 with a 4 & 5 year old. We recently began Family Game night. Mario Party was a hit Friday. But it's hard to shake the adulating we must do. #tlap
A4: I think “play” takes on a different meaning as an adult. It still means to do something that is fun and makes you happy, but it will look very different from person to person. If we disregard it, we could miss out on some vital self-care. #tlap
Do you ride roller coasters, Jay? That's the first thing that popped into my head - this image of you choosing the tallest, fastest roller coaster to ride, just because! #tlap
A4: When we allow ourselves to play, it drops our guard and that’s when creativity hits us. We disregard it because we do not think we have the time. We also are afraid to show people our vulnerability #tlap
A4:
Play is vital to self-care. It is in play that the real MAGIC happens—we get curious, we try new things, we learn, we grow.
Sadly, too many disregard play as frivolous or unessential, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Play is essential for growth.
#tlap
A4. I’ll play PS4 with my son, ride bikes. Play is a must. Adults take themselves too seriously bc we have serious responsibilities ( so I’ve heard 😉). I don’t know when it was taught out of our lives. #tlap
A4: To me, play means laughing. If you want to turn my mood around, make me laugh. Want to help me juggle stress, make me laugh. We definitely shouldn’t overlook play or laughing - even if it’s at yourself! #tlap
A4: I think as adults we begin to think we don't have time for "play", but it is important to go out and do the things we enjoy. If we don't we will get burned out. #tlap
A4: Just jumping in. I think we forget about play as adults when it comes to self care especially if you’re not into sports, but sit down to a competitive board game and the stress changes from school to winning and the mind switch can be freeing. #tlap
A4 I think we disregard play as adults because we tend to prioritize other "adult" things first because it seems like the adult thing to do. By doing this we also disregard our need for an adult outlet. This is how we become stressed and overwhelmed. #tlap
A4: Play allows for the mind to go where it wants, it breeds creativity and relaxation. Our society prides itself;f on hard work and ingenuity, but some times we work too hard and play too little.
#tlap
A4: My husband and I love to play poker together at the Flamingo (we live in Vegas) for our monthly date night. It's weird but you get in this zen-like state playing and also practice being disciplined. And you can talk at the same time. I look forward to it #tlap
A4: Play is so important in self-care because it is freeing & can bring joy to a person. We tend to forget about play and leave it out because as adults we see it as "childish" when in reality we could all benefit from more play! #tlap@thezenteacher#sanctuaries#selfcare
Love that. Jumping out of planes is such a rush. Running the obstacle courses like the tough mudders instead of just running. Going fast. Want to fly or go to mars for sure #tlap
Do you ride roller coasters, Jay? That's the first thing that popped into my head - this image of you choosing the tallest, fastest roller coaster to ride, just because! #tlap
A4 What I love about doing yoga with kids is we can pretend. We can be trees, or flamingos. We can sail our boats to places. And all with yoga poses. #tlap
A4: I’d say many adults do not allow themselves to play because we r so task oriented. It’s hard to let go of the “need to” and make more time for the “want to!” #TLAP
A3: Walking my dog! My mind tends to constantly feel like a lottery ball bin with everything bouncing and dancing on air! Walking my dog and being outside seems to let the balls drop into a winning combination. When I'm done, I can "see" clearly again. #tlap
A4: My husband got out our N64 and we played Mario Cart for my son's entire nap the other day. I don't know why we don't do this anymore... we should :) #tlap#stillakid
A4 : I believe play, as adults, is looking at things differently. I think we take things seriously - probably bc of our responsibilities. We need to find light in any situation and focusing on the good. #tlap
I feel like it is disregarded bc it doesn’t check anything off of our to do lists, it is not seen as being productive even though it’s so good for your mental health #tlap
A4: technology has changed play, it’s not as collaborative as individuals using devices as entertainment/play games- tech has changed the “how” in play. I prefer board games, cards and the old fashion play like dodge ball! #TLAP
I am inspired by all the teacher candidates that are on this chat tonight. I started Twitter as a junior, and it impacted my life in many ways. I am so happy to see others take the lead. Such rockstars! #tlap
A4: Play is so important in re-energizing and centering us. I try to set up opportunities for my staff to relax and play silly games (ie- our now annual staff scavenger hunt) but we don’t do nearly enough if this.#tlap
A5: I will find some stillness and/or silence tomorrow either during my prep or directly after school, after everyone has left. #makesahugedifference#tlap
A4: Eating lunch with 6 Ss in my office every day allows dedicated fun with those students who need it the most. It reminds me how important play actually is! #tlap
A3 listening to podcast by comedians. Right now it is @peteholmes You Made It Wierd — It’s definitely brain nutrients. And time with my son. I don’t know what I did in a former life to deserve him; but I’m humbled & grateful for previous me. #tlap
A4: Play can mean many things to me-laughter, being spontaneous, and just plain fun and games! As adults we need to model having fun so Ss watching know that being a grownup will be fun too! #tlap
A5: 3PM! (very specific, I know.) I get off work and go home and lay in my bed with no noise and relax for an hour, then workout at 4 and a night of homework after. #tlap
A5: I make it a point to put aside at least 30-45 minutes each evening to do yoga, meditate, and sometimes I'll throw a bit of a workout in there. This is my time to unwind and reset so I am ready to take on a new day. #tlap@thezenteacher#selfcare#sanctuaries
A4 Play is an important part of self-care, but sometimes people are too tired. I❤️d playing with my kids when they were little. I ❤️playing with my Ss now (basketball, 2 Square). #tlap
A5: During the school day, it is hard to find the time to truly center myself. I oftentimes do so when I get to school early and during my plan period. I sit with my laptop in front of me and try to get some grading done. I may need to start listening to music on my laptop. #tlap
A5 I find quite time each morning as I have set a personal goal no social media or email the first hour of the day or the last hour of the day. Take time to workout and get ready for the day. #tlap
A5: I will find stillness and silence during my planning tomorrow. Instead of working in our team office, I will try to stay in my room and appreciate some quiet. We have conferences right after school and it will be a well needed break mid-day. #TLAP
A5 I like to do it when I arrive at work and No one is there yet. It allows me to focus and have a moment of gratitude. I also like to take 10 minutes at lunch to breath and enter myself for the afternoon #TLAP
A5: Tomorrow after I nanny, I plan to find some stillness in my college campus' multipurpose room. I love to bring my diffuser and soft music on the speaker for some meditation and #yoga. I hope each of you will find some stillness because it is so nice! #tlap
A5) We are praying for an ice day tomorrow, so hopefully all day!! Otherwise, I give myself enough time in the morning to have a relaxing, quite time to get ready #tlap
A5 I find time for silence and stillness at the end of the day, when the kids are in bed asleep, the works is done and I can finally take a breath and relax. #tlap
A5- I take 15 mins each morning for quiet time with God and again at the end of the day. 30
Mins for quiet is a good thing for me. I set a timer in the morning to@make sure I don’t go over! #TLAP
A4: I don't know if it's play but I definitely try to find ways to take risks and get thrills. I need adrenaline rush's and I love it when thing happen spontaneously #tlap
A5: As the first one up, I can usually find a moment of silence. On the way to school is when my tech dir hubs wants his silence, so we respect that and all take advantage. Prep hour affords a moment of silence, & then right before bed. I take every moment I can grab.
#tlap
#tlap A5 Every day when I get home I walk my dog for 2 miles WITHOUT MY PHONE! During lunch I eat alone in my room and get quite time. My goal as a Tr is for my Ss to describe who I am with these descriptors. This takes a lot of quite time and reflection.
A5: I am going to follow the advice of a previous poster: I am going to take time to just sit and be in the morning and sip my hot cup of coffee instead of gulping and running #tlap
2-hour delay tomorrow, But I'll still be up at 5. Coffee, then #bfc530, then a bit more silence. Will likely enjoy the view of fresh snow out the back door. #tlap
A5 I don't like finding excuses, but with 15 inches of snow coming tomorrow, I think I will be quite busy. But I promise to find some time to read and relax a bit. If I can make it to the gym in the snow, I will (for some alone time). Trying to reclaim my balance daily.
A5: I always try to take some of my lunch to take a moment to breath... not make copies, not read emails, just deeps breaths to decompress. Also driving when im alone and before I go to bed #tlap
A5: Because I am in my level 3s still I find a lot of time for peace and quiet when my roommates leave for work/class and I am home alone. I find laser focus when I listen to good music, I get so much more done. #tlap
A5: I plan on taking 5-10 minutes between my homework tomorrow to sit back and relax before getting back to my work. Breaks are important to take or you are going to feel overwhelmed. #tlap
A5: I love the moment before my Ss come in. I turn on our lamps... put on some LoFi, turn on the diffuser.. and put a peaceful picture on our SmartBoard. With the chaos of the morning-this relaxes me. I need to use this time to purposefully center myself a bit more. #tlap
A5: my favourite time for silence and stillness is first thing in the morning. For 5-10 minutes before I have to get up, I love to lay there and be still and hear nothing. That moment is literally complete bliss since the rest of my day is filled with noise! #tlap
A1- if teachers are tired or grumpy they cannot be ready to share happy positivity with with their students. I love naps and exercise to recharge for my students. #tlap
A5 I'm going to cheat for tomorrow. We just had school canceled due to weather...so it will be one lone queit time where I can think....probably over think things. #tlap
A5: I am up before anyone else in the house (expert at getting dressed in low light!). Usually one of the first to school by 6:15am. This is a part of my routine. Well - I should add more “stillness” #tlap
A5 on the drive to school, I listen to music and watch the sunrise. There is a beautiful view in front of my school over the trees as the sun peeks through. Before I enter the building I soak the beauty in, close my eyes and express gratitude for the day to make a difference #tlap
A5: I come to school about 45 minutes early. I don't typically do too much once I get to school except use that time to get my mind ready to rock and roll and make a difference. #tlap
A5: I started the GoNoodle mindfulness videos today with my students and noticed a huge difference (in them and me!) I'm going to commit to showing them daily. #tlap
A5: The beginning and end of each day often offer times for silence, stillness, gratefulness, and reflection. I often find pockets of time in the middle, too—but the beginning and end are my go-to times. They make for meaningful bookends to each day. #tlap
A4: When we allow ourselves to play, it drops our guard and that’s when creativity hits us. We disregard it because we do not think we have the time. We also are afraid to show people our vulnerability #tlap
So very true. It keeps me sane! I'm not the buffest chick but hey... I feel great in my skin! ;)
I would like to be lots more buff, though. Just a little side note... hehe
#tlap
A5 : It always has to come between 5-6am. My boys are usually asleep and I can sneak off to my santuary aka office to do my thing. I work from home and it's not easy to find silence during waking hours #tlap
Yes 😁 I teach 2nd grade. There nothing like playing basketball with a bunch of 2nd graders who can shoot over you. They ❤️it, and I get to see them from a different lense. #tlap
A5: Those first few minutes after the alarm goes off. I lay in bed, eyes closed, thinking about nothing in particular. I do the same thing as I fall asleep at night. I love that stillness. #tlap#Sanctuaries
A5: I like to start and end my day with quiet for #selfcare. I am a strange bird who commutes to and from work with the radio OFF. This is my time for silence. You may also enjoy the new Calm™️app. Free for educators. #tlap
A3: I love taking a long walk with my dog after getting home, but this cold weather has really been a bummer lately! Doodling and listening to podcasts have been my alternate activity. So soothing. #tlap
A5: I try to carve out some quiet time every morning to reflect and prepare myself for the day ahead, even if it’s just in my car during my commute. #tlap
This would be an interesting piece of research. I was looking at this infographic today showing results on collaborative problem solving ... maybe it would be of interest to you :) #tlap
Yes! I love that some teachers eat with their students, but sometimes I need that calm quiet lunch to recenter myself and get settled in for the rest of the day. #tlap
A5: Always find time by going in early and taking moments when they present themselves #tlap A walk during prep, sit in the car for till end of song after parking etc
A5. In my car on the drive to work. My drive is beautiful and if I choose it can be silent. Also, tomorrow is Tuesday so Tuesday yoga night. 🧘🏻♀️ #tlap
A4: Most people don't see play as being productive. If you have time to play you aren't doing enough not realizing doing something that you enjoy just because is what life is all about! #tlap
I believe play relaxes you. It shows that even though your a teacher, you can still have fun with the students. They enjoy seeing that. I think because we have so many responsibilities as adults, play gets pushed to the end of our lists #tlap#ConverseChat
A4- I try to have fun everyday and I make sure the kids see me having fun! From playing Uno w/ Ss, to making snow angels or doing cartwheels down the hall! #Tlap
A5: During my morning commute I like to turn the radio off and just enjoy the silence and get ready for the day ahead. On my commute home I do the same and reflect on my day and what I have learned. #tlap#smsutlap
A5: Devotions in the morning. Or at night time sitting by the fire place, sipping a glass of wine, watching the snow gently fall (praying the wind doesn’t pick up) 🌬❄️ #tlap
A5: I'm thinking a stop at my favorite little coffee shop, The Local Cup, might be a great way to find a little #zen in this busy week! Maybe I'll even bring a book to read for a bit! #makingithappen#tlap#renew
In a typical day I have about a 30 minute communte one way. That drive time is a great time for me to think about things. I can think about what I need to do or upcoming lessons or the awesome jams on the radio. #tlap
A5: I am up before anyone else in the house (expert at getting dressed in low light!). Usually one of the first to school by 6:15am. This is a part of my routine. Well - I should add more “stillness” #tlap
A5: Not sure how much silence there will be tomorrow during writing training then another meeting after that but it will be a day of learning! The stillness will set in once I arrive home #tlap
A6: One thing I can do to simplify my life/teaching before June is to declutter my classroom. Goal: go from three file cabinets to two. #tiny shifts #tlap
A5: I count my yoga practice...even though I like to watch a video or go to a class...it's a peaceful time, focused on breathing and moving gracefully. ♡ #tlap
#tlap A6: Don't procrastinate, and be prepared. I would be 100 times less stressed if I did homework right away rather than waiting til the last day to do it :/
A6: I have to realize that my to-do list will never get completely done, and some things like grading can wait until the next day. I would like to be more intentional about when I take a break and give myself time to relax and rejuvenate. #tlap
A6: I'm not sure if "simplify" will be on my radar the next few months, BUT... I can make a concerted effort to find those #sanctuaries in each day for balance and renewal so I can pour into others as they've poured into me! #tlap#uplift#passionforkindness
A6: set priorities; don't try and do too much - focus on 1-2 things and do them really well - schedule in the time for your well being...streamline #tlap
A5: This past year I started getting up at 5:30 each morning to establish more of a morning routine. It makes the biggest difference in starting off my day at a leisurely pace instead of running around last minute! #tlap
A3: I love taking a long walk with my dog after getting home, but this cold weather has really been a bummer lately! Doodling and listening to podcasts have been my alternate activity. So soothing. #tlap
A6: I could simplify my life by not taking on so many tasks. I work three jobs as a full time student, maybe I should lose one of them so I have more time to focus on my education and future. #tlap
A6: Prioritize what is the most important. In life it is doing only what is best for my family. In teaching, do what will most positively impact learning #tlap
A6: Jumping LATE into #tlap after getting girls to bed! One thing to simplify is to inventory priorities and figure out what to say no to. This will be something with social media for me.
A6 I have an intention to incorporate more SEL components to my class—including setting time to do breathing exercises/meditation in class with students #tlap
A6: Honestly, just getting/staying organized! It helps to relieve stress when I am organized and prioritize my tasks. This also allows for time to do the more "fun" self-care activities. #TLAP
A3: Going to concerts! I love listening to live music and have 5+ concerts lined up in the next 2 months. March-October is my favorite time of year because of shows :) #tlap
A6: My goal is to eliminate my athletic coaching duties. That will free up my after school and weekend times during the fall and spring seasons. THAT will give me more flexibility for presenting at conferences, reading, and writing. #tlap
A6: I'm with @tamaraletter - I'm pretty sure "simplifying" won't be happening any time soon. I'm excited to relish in those few quiet moments. #tlap#Sanctuaries
A6: Ask for help when I need it. One of my limiting beliefs is that I have to DO IT ALL .... and alone. As I've begun to ask for help, the support has come flooding in. Well at least I see the support I have more clearly now. Simple is lovely. #tlap
Q6: Do less - but honestly, I will end up doing more. I love the extra ways to spend time with students. Wife is also a teacher and only son still at home is busy - we love it. We love to serve our students! ❤️#tlap
Don’t reinvent every little thing. Pick a few things to add some sparkle to... focus on building Ss relationships and relinquishing some control so Ss can contribute to the creation process. #tlap
A6: Declutter and organize the classroom. I came in mid year so I have been trying to organize and declutter as I go. The more organized I can be, the simpler things will be. @thezenteacher#tlap#sanctuaries
A4: In my life play IS self care. My ultimate self care is stand up paddling in the ocean. It renews my mind, body and soul and it is play. I think many people in Hawaii value play and the connection to our ocean. 🏄🏻♀️. . #tlap
A6 Focus on the things that you have control over (which might not be many things) and keep your focus there. Those things that are out of your control are out of your control. #tlap
A6: Remember that we teach students, not just content. I love my content, but I wake up and show up for my kids every morning, not the text. Also, I keep track of my "happy moments" in a box. Notes, cards, thank you pictures. #myjobisthebest#tlap
There's still time! Take a moment right now. Pause. Reflect on what you are grateful for. Reflect on the great things that make YOU you. Rest well tonight. Even just a moment "counts." And then do it tomorrow, too! 💞💞 #tlap
I took 19 credits while doing a teaching internship. I was stressed and overwhelmed, but thankfully, I made it through with a 4.0. You have to know how much you can handle. #tlap
A6: I could simplify my life by not taking on so many tasks. I work three jobs as a full time student, maybe I should lose one of them so I have more time to focus on my education and future. #tlap
A6: I am really working on this with my students...just enjoying the learning and the experiences, the process. ..stop worrying about covering everything and grades! :-) Enjoy Today! #tlap
Me too!!! Simplifying is just not realistic... but making time for me is something that I need to do on a regular basis. I’ve learned that the hard way. #tlap
A6: Do small things for preparedness when time allows so I’m not scrambling. Also leave work earlier so I have more time for me. It can be done. Lastly, mindfulness. #tlap
A6 I need to let go of some of steps I take before I allow myself to leave at night. More than one or two things have no real value but I still do them out of habit #TLAP
A6: Jumping LATE into #tlap after getting girls to bed! One thing to simplify is to inventory priorities and figure out what to say no to. This will be something with social media for me.
Me too! I found that when you establish good behaviours into your routines it simplifies your life endlessly. I get up early and go for a run each morning and still have ample time to have breakfast and read the news. #tlap
That's tough coming in midyear! I did that when I started in the media center. The goal for that 6 months was survival. Then I was able to make it my own! I love that you're cleaning out as you go! #tlap
I need to simplify my life by organizing my cluttered desk and storage. I cleaned up my Google Drive in the fall and it has made my life so much easier. #tlap
A6: I look forward to summer adventures, so I think I will print out a calendar and dedicate some time to plan out fun things to do with my friends and family this upcoming summer. It is always nice to make some goals and achieve them! #tlap
A6 I have an intention to incorporate more SEL components to my class—including setting time to do breathing exercises/meditation in class with students #tlap
A6: I've started forcing myself to go to bed at 11 even if my entire to-do list isn't done and I've learned that life still goes on. Most of the items on there can wait another day. #tlap
A5: My silence and stillness comes early in the morning while my daughter and husband are still asleep and the entire house is still. It’s my perfect quiet time! #tlap
A3: Going to concerts! I love listening to live music and have 5+ concerts lined up in the next 2 months. March-October is my favorite time of year because of shows :) #tlap
A6: Less procrastination, more organization...work on one task at a time instead of juggling many tasks so I do not feel overwhelmed trying to accomplish everything all at once. #tlap#smsutlap
A6: Organize and clean out my office. I usually give it a deep clean at the beginning of the year #tlap but it’s time for another one! It preys on my mind when it’s not in order!
A6 Improving my ability to focus on the task at hand when I have my own time would help a ton! Whenever I get the time there are 20 things going through my head that "need" need to get done. I just need to prioritze, pick one, and get it done! #tlap
A6: I have a daily checklist at home with all my maintenance chores (garbage, dishes, baby laundry, etc). It feels great when I check everything off for the day and I'd like to make one for the classroom and stick to it #tlap
You're not alone. It's a learning process and takes giving yourself permission. That's why PERMISSION is one of the first chapters in SANCTUARIES. #tlap
A6: Hmmmm... to simplify my life between now and June? I can continue to sort through my “things” and keep getting rid of them. Every time I find myself with fewer things, life feels simpler and more peaceful. #tlap
A6 "Don't sweat the small stuff."
I always worry about my impact, my efficiency and if I am doing everything in my power to make a difference. I need to accept that balance is just as important in being efficient. So I will relax pressure on myself to have more fun!
#tlap
My students always loved doing the mindfulness/yoga videos on @GoNoodle ! I actually miss doing those now that I'm in an admin position- they helped me focus, too! #tlap
A7: my 2nd year of teaching, I set a boundary where I would leave school at a certain time no matter what. That has now developed into me not taking much school work home-only when I absolutely have to. It's been so good! #tlap
A7: I won’t feel bad when I leave right after school or don’t show up an hour early. I will do what is best for me when I need it so I can be my best for my students #tlap
A6: One margin/boundary would be to stop work by 9 p.m. nightly-ish. (Twitter chats are NOT work :) ) I have PD to present to District on Friday so that's a bigger challenge than it may seem like at first. #tlap
A7: as much as we love teaching, we have to remember it's our profession, not our life...it can be hard b/c we want to do right by our Ss and advocate for their needs but healthy, family, and friends are the most important. #tlap
Q7: I want to set myself a limit for how late I stay up at night. I am definitely a night person, but if I were to go to bed earlier it would also help me accomplish more during the day. #tlap
A6 I will celebrate every day reflecting on what went well. Leave the building a little earlier so that I can cook and share a meal with my family. #tlap
A7: I will work smart and hard during the week so I can have my weekend as mine and not be spending most of my weekend at the school! @thezenteacher#tlap#sanctuaries#selfcare
A7: Leave school on Friday looking forward to the three day weekend with no papers to grade or tasks to complete before showing back up. And planning something fun for the family on Monday to just unplug and unwind! #tlap
A7 : I will take my work email off my personal phone and stop reading and responding to emails at 5pm when I will close my laptop and turn my phone off. #tlap
A7 I will not bring homework with me two nights a week. Those nights I will focus on personal projects, family and my balance. I need to know that is okay not to work every night for my job. #tlap
A7: Well last week, I said my "no tech" rule started at 6:45 p.m. and now it might have to be 7:00 because I love this chat so much! So it's time for me to power down. Until next week! #tlap
A7: I have been doing a pretty good job of this because it was my New Years Resolution, putting my phone up when I get in bed to actual go to sleep. #tlap
Q7: I will not allow others’ stress to leak into my own stress. I can listen and support, but then I must leave it there. I tend to want to “fix” but I’ll draw my line this week. #tlap
A6 "Don't sweat the small stuff."
I always worry about my impact, my efficiency and if I am doing everything in my power to make a difference. I need to accept that balance is just as important in being efficient. So I will relax pressure on myself to have more fun!
#tlap
Focus on intentions and push out negativity. Sometimes I focus on the need for perfection and this is not healthy or helpful for myself or others. If the goal is perfection... the result will always be dissatisfaction! #tlap
A6: Love that word SIMPLIFY. Sing, Imagine, Make time for family, Plan plan plan, Love others, Innovate, Find the good in everything, Yearn for the best in life. #tlap
A6: One thing we can do to simplify our lives is to be present—truly present. We often stress & tell ourselves catastrophizing stories about the future. But they are just that: stories. We don't have to believe them. We can turn those thoughts around. (Thanks, @ByronKatie!) #tlap
Those of you who have students analyze music. Need some help. How do you do it? What are expectations? What do you do in class? #worldgeochat#educomix#tlap#playlap #
I SO appreciate you being on the launch list, Maria. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. When you get the book, just let me know if you have any questions. You know where to find me. #tlap
I read all your emails leading up to the release of your book and loved them, however life got the best of me and still haven’t ordered it. I am absolutely ordering it tomorrow. I NEED it! 😊💖🙌🏼💖👏🏼
A5: Very good possibility that tomorrow is a #SnowDay; so my time for silence and stillness will be in my classroom...minus my 32 per 1 / 26 per 3 / 17 per 4 #SJBBlackBears
Let me reassure you, my friend. YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE. When you spend time with your girls, when you take time to plan out your lessons, when you bake gluten-free goodies for a grieving staff... never doubt your impact! Each and every small moment matters! #tlap
I've made a commitment that I will do work related things during the week but on the weekend I am going to focus on meeting my professional goals that are more personal and will help me get to where I want to be next in my profession. #tlap
A7 I will use my planner more often!
I am too reliant on my phone/computer to remind me of appointments/meetings/etc. There's nothing quite like writing something down to help it stick! #tlap#conversechat
A7: I would like to somehow find a way to meal prep once or twice a week because I LOVE to eat my delicious #vegan food but I do not usually have the time to cook it. I want to make time to cook the things I love to eat during the week! #tlap
I am inspired by all the teacher candidates that are on this chat tonight. I started Twitter as a junior, and it impacted my life in many ways. I am so happy to see others take the lead. Such rockstars! #tlap
It is ok to leave a situation where you aren't valued and unhappy and yes to alpaca therapy, trying to convince all my country friends to buy them.
Maybe too to actually remember to use the spa in our apt block. It is relaxing. #tlap

WOW! That went faster than the lobster tail at a Vegas buffet after a Siegfried and Roy show! Thanks for being here & remember to take care of yourself! #zenteacher#tlap#sanctuaries
I love that there are so many Pre-Service Teachers on #tlap tonight. Such an important topic for you all! I love baby teachers . I mean that in the most loving and supportive way.
I enjoyed my first Twitter chat! Thanks for the self-care tips and reflection. They are much needed, especially during this time of year! :) @thezenteacher#tlap
A7:
Some of my self-care boundaries:
Keeping the Sabbath each week—a true day of rest and spiritual growth
No work email on my mobile devices
Leaving work by a set time (barring unusual circumstances)
#tlap
I had a blast! If you want to go deeper, remember to check out SANCTUARIES: SELF-CARE SECRETS FOR STRESSED OUT TEACHERS! https://t.co/k4FgBojevi Let me know if you have any questions! Take care! #tlap
