A1 Personal care skills are important, as are social skills. Would hope that some basic numeracy and literacy skills are in place, but often phonics needs to be untaught and begun again because of errors. #UKEdChat
A1. Welcome days before the start of term are useful: children become a little more familiar with the school, the adults and faces they’ll meet and parent anxieties can be addressed. #UKEdChat
A1 Seeing something of the world always gives children an advantage and a different perspective. These experiences can be drawn upon throughout their education. #UKEdChat
Agree. We also try to do nursery visits too wherever possible to observe the children and meet the professionals who have been working with them to find out as much as possible. #UKEdChat
A1 Children should understand that failure should be celebrated just as much as success. That not everyone thinks the same but that every viewpoint is important and valid. That life is learning, learning is a journey and teachers are the drivers. #ukedchat
A2. No. I would never encourage parents to not enable their children to learn, no matter what their age and stage or whether or not they’ve started at school. #UKEdChat
A1 Children should understand that failure should be celebrated just as much as success. That not everyone thinks the same but that every viewpoint is important and valid. That life is learning, learning is a journey and teachers are the drivers. #ukedchat
A2 Having support at home is a wonderful thing, although children shouldn't be taught prejudice, poor attitude or a lack of respect for others. #ukedchat
A2 With many children starting school with limited language and experience I wouldn't want to state what shouldn't be taught to any parents or carers. There is such a capacity to learn before school whether it's done knowingly or not. #UKEdChat
A3 A 'secondary ready' child knows how to deal with challenges, can persevere, is able to learn alongside others, questions things to further their understanding, can make connections in their learning and knows there is a strong correlation between effort and progress. #UKEdChat
It's something that I actively promote in my class as well as with other staff across the school. Is it a reality in all classrooms? Probably not, but they say the the First Step In Learning is to FAIL. #ukedchat
A1: The ability to sing, & physically move in time to the beat. Singing improves well-being, and helps expedite literacy based learning. Being able to identify and move to the beat helps improve linguistic, and numeracy based learning. Less tv, more listening to music. #UKEdChat
Amelia who is four has always been a bookworm. We borrowed a few phonics books and she has really enjoyed reading them. These should keep us going for a while! We'll be taking these in the motorhome! #learningtoread#JuliaDonaldson#phonics

Secure in written methods for maths with secure grasp of known mental facts and able to apply. Respond to a range of texts (which they can read with fluency/expression) orally with clear written responses. Afraid in writing they must be secure in non fiction text types #UKEdChat
A3. In the Isle of Man our ‘One Island, One School’ transition model sees primary and secondary schools work together in a number of ways to support the move of pupils from Year 6 into Year 7, ensuring pupils are ‘secondary ready.’ (1/2) #UKEdChat
A3. The aim of ‘One Island, One School’ is to ensure a smooth transition of learning as well as effective induction for all the Island’s year 6 pupils. (2/2) #UKEdChat

What is the single most important thing parents can do to help their children start your phase of education well?
Pls use the hashtag & A4...
A3 If every child arrived to secondary with a reading age that matched their actual age that would make worlds of difference - as it would at primary level obviously! #ukedchat
A3 A secondary ready pupil should be able to work independently as well as with others. Be willing to take risks, explore and ideally self-manage. #ukedchat
A4 Be involved and supportive of the school, come along to taster days, parents evenings etc. and don't be afraid to contact the school if they think something is wrong at an early stage. #ukedchat
A4 not be afraid to ask if they too are struggling with the learning. Children need to see it’s ok for parents not to know things and parents shouldn’t feel embarrassed. Communication is key #UKEdChat@ukedchat

#UKEdChat A3 a pupil who is ready to understand that they have further responsibility for their own work and actions & who is ready to try and not expect to be spoon fed (too many times have I seen capable pupils been expected to be given answers and not do the work themselves!
A4 Show an interest in school and education. Our children start at our school when they are 7. Many have been in school for a few years and you can always tell which children have parents who will ask them about their day, what they have been learning etc. #UKEdChat
A4 #UKEdChat Believe in us as professionals...also tell their kid that they will back the teachers if the kid gets punishment/detention/reprimanded etc
A5. We’ve been thinking about this a lot at one of my schools. Next term we’re launching “Laxey Learners” - a statement of what kind of people our pupils will become. Amongst other things we want them to be “fit for the future”, “compassionate” and “successful.” (1/2) #UKEdChat
We have lots of fantastic schools using our shuffle book to create stories between families and schools. Way to create stories together around interests. Making lots of great links and helping parents talk to their children https://t.co/pK33pFKFx7#UKEdChat
Depends whether the question is 'What does the current education system prepare children for?' or 'What do we think education should prepare children for?' #UKEdChat
A5. If our pupils become true “Laxey Learners” then the education in our school will have equipped them with the mindset, learning dispositions and skills needed to thrive in the world. The graphic is a montage of the work in progress. (2/2) #UKEdChat
A4 #UKEdChat basic manners and respect, ensure their child is properly prepared and equipped for the day and set time to have a conversation about their day at school work and extra curricular activities
A6 At secondary level I think it's more about the culture of the school preparing students for lessons rather than kids themselves. Equipment etc. is the obvious answer but students who are prepared to engage, contribute etc. need a positive school culture for that. #ukedchat
A5 Education aims to prepare children for life, by providing the skills necessary to be conscientious, capable independent individuals ready to play a part in contributing positively to society. #ukedchat
A lot of preparation happens in early years setting children up with the right attitude for learning. If we invest when they're young then we create resilient, creative, motivated, communicating, adults who will be prepared for any lesson #UKEdChat
A6 The best preparation for my lessons is to be yourself. Take part when you feel comfortable, listen when you don't, and don't be freaked out if I start singing or dancing 😂 #ukedchat
A6 - really hard to answer, so many variables. Interest, tiredness, the teacher, stress, something that happened (exciting or otherwise), other people in the class- friends or foes... but other than that, I’d say have all equipment and shirt tucked in 😊 #UKEdChat
So important We really need to think about providing children with skills that make a difference all the way through life. We've done lots of research into this while developing #TalesToolkit & found it's all about proving the right interactions for children while young #UKEDChat
A6 Be engaged in their learning, think of questions and have a willingness to try their best (as much as possible). I ask each class who is the most important person to help you learn? At the start of the year they say me. Within a few weeks they know it's them. #UKEdChat
Previously worked at a school where parents had not always had a good experience of school and we worked hard with them to overcome their barriers and fear of school so they could share happier experiences with their child #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A1 a want to know things. This can be lost before school if not supported. Also personal care skills but these can be aided as they move school too.
This is a really key point. Lots of families have fear of school, things going on in their life. We need to be sensitive and think about baby steps to earn their trust #ukedchat

Thank you. It's true. You can have the best teacher, but if you don't want to learn you won't. The children need to realise that they are active learners, not passive listeners. Once a class understands that, they are a joy to teach. #UKEdChat
Not think one subject is more important than another. Yes we have our preferences but so do the children so give them a fair chance/experience of all subjects to choose their favourites. More to life than English and Maths... #UKEdChat
A7. Our work on learning habits is deeply embedded at @LaxeySchool and is all about helping our pupils to be better learners and well prepared for learning. We’ll be introducing our new intake to it as soon as they start in September. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A2 not as such, I don't think we should be looking at things that are wrong that parents or carers do. I feel that there shouldn't be too much pressure before school though. They will naturally learn...that's what humans do!
A7 Understanding that enquiry based skills learnt in Geography and History are also transferable in Science and other subjects. Teachers knowing that something has been taught in another subject and ensuring those skills are used in theirs is really important #ukedchat
Yay we're with you on developing creativity! We're really excited that our Goldsmiths impact report will be published in September which shows difference made to children's creativity using #TalesToolkit@GoldSchoolFam@DrAliceJones#ukedchat

#UKEdChat A3 so many different answers for different children. Open to new experiences and it's good to have a knowledge of the school. Apart from that depends on the school and the pupils. No twitter sized answers from me!
This is something I feel is sorely missing. We do have some very supportive parents though that are keen to understand where their child is in their journey and what they can do to support progression as well as work with the child and teacher to overcome any hurdles. #ukedchat
A8 I ask for support. If I don't feel that this is my area of expertise I ask for help. Teaching was not a do it yourself profession and it is ok to ask for help. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A5 I am obviously in a mood tonight to not fall on an answer. Education prepares pupils to achieve everything and nothing at the same time. It can show them the way but it's up to them. I guess it's giving them a tool...up to them to use it well.
#UKEdChat A8 for challenging classes I think identify the potential challenges. Then plan a range of activities and potential interventions to engage. Always best to have a back-up.
Great answer. One of our mottos is 'Linking together makes everything better.' Such a great supportive network of teachers and expertise out there #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A5 A good example is when I teach PSHEE. I will never be there, in that moment when they may be offered drugs to say "don't do it!" (if this happens to them) so my education doesn't change them. It DOES allow them to see consequence and make a choice themselves.
A7 Totally agree with these. The attitudes and skills for learning are so important to develop at the start of the year and reinforce as the year goes on. Teachers need to model these too. #UKEdChat
Don't always assume that something bad will happen. If you as a teacher can stay calm then it also calms and surprises the students. They think they are going to get a reaction and don't it catches them off guard. #ukedchat
#UKEdChat Come open minded. In RS there are many predetermined views that may or may not be based in fact. I am to brake down the blocks they have of knowledge. If they build up again the same way after the lessons that's fab...but prepare that no one may know the right answers
A7 #UKEdChat Ask other teachers about how they’re doing in other subjects and then bring it up when having conversations with the student. Challenge then for not putting in the effort and praise them for doing well.
#UKEdChat A7 Teachers can be open minded, prepared and well planned for as much as they can. Have high expectations but understand that little things may effect these and support these issues.
A8 Get support from the people around you - there will probably be somebody in the school that could write the book on dealing with whatever it is that's challenging. #ukedchat
