We use a Q1/A1 format in #akedchat Let's start off with seeing what already happens in your schools or other settings. Don't forget the #akedchat hashtag so we can all follow the chat!
A1: I love celebrations and recognition through district website and newsletters. I can congratulate friends at other schools and locations too. #akedchat
#akedchat Our department tries to celebrate the amazing learning that goes on in our classrooms by sharing student quotes and pictures on our district social network platform. Many of our principals and teachers provide time for celebrations as well.
A2: Lots of multicultural celebrations at schools and recognition for traditions and culture - there could be more weaving through the school culture but still pretty decent. #akedchat
Q3: One pushback against celebrations is the cost. But they don't have to cost anything! What are some of your favorite free or low cost celebrations? #akedchat
A3: I think it’s more important to get acknowledgement and know that others appreciate you. But after that a card, treats, and hugs are good. #akedchat
Q4: I'm a PBIS cheerleader! I *LOVE* #PBIS and its opportunity to change schools and support students. What about you? How well do you know PBIS? #akedchat
A4: I'm a 8-9 for PBIS! I'm sure there is more I can know about it. But I do love it for how it can support students through the school culture. #akedchat
A4: Probably around an 8? I used to be the administrator member of a PBIS implementation team. My current district focuses on CHAMPS, which has some pretty similar elements. #akedchat
A5: When Ss finish a book, I award them a card and we all celebrate. They add it to our "wall of books" and are proud to staple their cards up #akedchat
A5: We recently had a major staff and teaching style change. It was rough but it is worth it! We celebrated with a cinnamon roll bakeoff. For HS kids. #akedchat
A5: I celebrated Pi day (observed) on 3/9. Students created pi skylines, they each got a pi pencil and temp tattoo. Also did a class competition , which class could line up in order of pi digits silently the quickest, fastest class gets a post break party #akedchat
A5: At the end of each class I always ask Ss if they want to share any celebrations. I always have a few. "I passed my RC Quiz", "I finished publishing", "I figured out how to save my video" #akedchat
A6: I usually fall back on PBIS. How can we be respectful of each other if we don't know each other? A little fun, rapport-building goes a long way toward Ss being will to tackle the academics of school. #akedchat
A6: Ss want to be somewhere they feel safe and appreciated. Taking time to celebrate even (especially) the small successes show them that we value them and their contributions; Ss learn better when they know their work is valued! #akedchat
A6: This. And the fact that a positive classroom culture is a necessity. When Ss feel safe, valued, supported they are willing to take chances, to push themselves out of their comfort zones, grow & learn #akedchat
Well, you have math, health, a bit of science, throw in some advertising in ELA & you've got a whole inter-disciplinary unit the Ss could participate in! #akedchat
A7: I've been out of the classroom for near 3 weeks. I miss my Ss! We have "fist bump Friday" each week so next week, 3/30, it will be day-long fistbumps as a celebration! #akedchat
Thank you for joining this week's #akedchat ... @ASD_STEM is on deck to host next week. See you next Monday! And thanks for celebrating my birthday with me!
A7: Since we don’t have our own classrooms, our department is thinking of opening up nominations for a bi-weekly drawing for prizes where staff members can nominate each other for amazing things they are doing. #akedchat
A7: I love celebrating the great work of teachers in Anchorage in my ELA newsletters. But tomorrow I get to kick off being a PBS Digital Innovator All Star with a group webinar with the others from around the country b #akedchat#pbsdigitalinnovator
