Run by Des Moines Public School Instructional Technology Coordinators and moderated by them and educators from the district every Tuesday from 8-9pm CST during the school year. We take occasional breaks for the Holidays, but we are consistently trying to reach out to our 60 plus schools and programs to collaborate and tell their stories.

Jump in on the pitching changes! Go Cubs!
A1 Erika, 9/10 year old teacher!
Q2: When you think about personalized learning, what is the first thing that comes to mind? https://t.co/zn9zBvWHVI
Dana Allen , Teacher at the ...duh they are going to win!! Go Cubbies!
A1: Jake, Instructional Tech Coord. Cubs chance looking good after a fast start.
A2:Ss voice and choice as well as independent work and inquiry lessons based on Ss academic needs
Dana Allen , Downtown School , GOOOOO CUBBIES!
A2 personalized learning: making learning individualized for all ss. Or, pers. PD: what am I going to do this year to grow?
A2- a teacher knowing what a student needs and best ways to reach them. Students owning the process...grand slam
A2 Learning that is customized to students needs.
student voice is great! When they have choice of what they are learning, they take more ownership
GRAND SLAM!!!!!!! GO CUBS! A2: student choice, personalized activities, decisions made for each student not a whole class.
Ss owning the process is a BIG part of personalized learning!
A2 Students that are challenged and not bored.
I probably should have put that first.... https://t.co/C7jJIwBe1h
Ss owning the process is a BIG part of personalized learning!
Student voice and ownership of learning. Learning becomes relevant and ALL students get what they need
When it is personalized it matters more to them!
then students own the success too! It wasn't what the teacher taught them but what they learned.
A3: Engagement, build love of learning, develop independence
I agree the struggle is how to get Ts comfortable w/ Ss being in charge of their learning and not them! https://t.co/0zDDw7Pakh
Student voice and ownership of learning. Learning becomes relevant and ALL students get what they need
A1 Diana TLC coach Brubaker
A3 Increased motivation & engagement due to the S driving the learning into areas and topics they are interested in.
A3 The more input learners have the more autonomy Ss will have when it comes to their learning https://t.co/RQlPdsu5Y3
A2 Setting goals and celebrating growth
build on that love of learning also builds relationships w/ Ss!
a1 Sandy Kirkman, Brody Middle, 6th grade math and science
A3 students need to wrestle with their learning and ideas to make it their own and teachers should foster that.
It's absolutely a learning curve. https://t.co/AbCdmTmgls
I agree the struggle is how to get Ts comfortable w/ Ss being in charge of their learning and not them! https://t.co/0zDDw7Pakh
Student voice and ownership of learning. Learning becomes relevant and ALL students get what they need
A3: Development of life long learners active in their education, rather than being a passive participant.
A2 making learning meaningful and for each student
A3: Learning is personal. No data, test, or strategy can force someone to learn. It's all about the individual.
A3 s should be involved because it is their learning, provide them with control and you empower them
A3 intrinsic motivation, ownership, buy in, engagement, I could go on and on...it's the right thing to do on so many levels
Any tips on how to get Ts to the point where their Ss are autonomous?
Increased engagement, collaboration, & focus on 21st cen skills. More about the process of learning than memorization
you get there by sticking with the process of praising and supporting Ss in all phases of learning
Growth Mindset! Learn from challenges and mistakes. https://t.co/GRkDT9s4gc
A3 students need to wrestle with their learning and ideas to make it their own and teachers should foster that.
telling story gives Ss voice to their learning
A4 creates more self awareness in a learn if they can identify, t's can match instruction/outcome to learning styles. Win win
So that Ts can understand the best way to guide each student. If a student can reflect on that level, they are on their way.
A4: Increases the level of processing for the student, sts. Encouraged to own their learning.
A4: When learners share their styles they also share frustrations and others grow from that. Dave joining late from Ankeny
Active over passive. Audience is everything. When there is an audience, expectation for self increases, therefore learning.
then it goes back to the T to allow individualized learning for their students
and students can grow and help each other get over those frustrations too
Ed is a service profession. Its our ethical responsibility 2 learn about our Ss & how they learn and meet their individual needs
A5:build autonomy, provide multiple opportunities to reflect on learning & experiences, have clear expectations for independence
This fosters a community of learners!
A5 get to know students. How are they or will they learn? What is meaningful to them? Use those ideas! Don't be afraid.
A5: I think shifting the culture is the key - make exploration, choice, self-advocacy expectations.
Ts cannot be afraid to fail either
A5: Teaching students about themselves as learners will help them to learn how to advocate for their own learning.
Choices in assignments and types of assessment. "How will you show me you know...?"
A5: Lessen the role of the teacher as a the sage on the stage and increasing show that the T is a facilitator of learning.
Ss choice in type of assessment is a great idea! great way to use 21st century skills for sure!
A5: if you know what your sts. Interests are, connections are made and less shifting needs to be done.
Communicating about frustrations & self is so powerful! Ss can play to their strengths when collaborating & others
A5 Ss understanding targets, tracking progress and reflecting on learning. Asking how they can best demonstrate understanding
A5 s also need release in increments to also help shift their mindset. Praise, guidance, more release. https://t.co/qoYJN2W8lW
A5: Choice in how they show proficiency, promotes self-evaluation, and ownership of learning/work
A6: provide opportunities for Ss to be independent and learn from choices (planning, choice of assignment, schedule)
A6: Build in chunked, attainable goals - success breeds success.
A6 I don't know how to answer this as I haven't heard it referred to as S's agency?
A6: Allow students to help develop their learning environment beyond classroom expecations...why not space & schedule too?
A6: I think helping build skills around organization, prioritizing & time mgmt is very important.
A6: stick with it. It can't be a strategy, it needs to be an environment.
attainable is the key, so that Ss gain the confidence, but then using data to personalizing for them
We have to allow Ss opportunities to practice prioritizing, managing time, organizing assignments too.
Wikipedia: agency is the capacity of a person to act in any given environment.
GROWTH MINDSET! It is a culture, not a lesson!
Ss agency is more or less about Ss autonomy in their own learning, oppo of helplessness
A6 We empower by providing multiple opportunities for success and experience with shouldering responsibility
Yes! Make them in charge of their reflecting!
A7: developing Ss agency fosters independent, reflective, responsible and self-directed individuals
We start with the word and allow students to build what they believe a classroom of autonomy would look like.
A7 developing growth mindset and grit. Ss learn to collaborate, think critically and problem solve. Learning mimics real world
A7 develop agency builds confidence in their learning, which in turn drives their passion for learning
A7: Our world changes so fast that you have to be able to adapt to new information and know what to do with it.
A7 they have a stronger self-esteem and awareness and skill set to achieve what they put their mind to https://t.co/ecPwJ0CB8j
A7 Ss with a strong sense of self efficacy will have confidence they can accomplish anything and they will.
A4 I think it is so important for elementary students to think about how they learn and to reflect on what works for them
A7 Giving students ownership makes students justify their learning and the importance their learning.
YES! Develop confidence and they will take more risks in their learning, ask questions no one else will ask, etc.
So where is this great fount of gifs from which you draw?
A8 create flexible schedule, alleviate transitions 2 allow more time 2 confer w/Ss, integrate curricular areas as much as I can
A8: Tap into Ss interests, give choice about the learning and maybe how they provide evidence of the learning.
A8: Provide opportunities for feedback (give & receive) and revision makes learning deeper & more meaningful.
how would flexible schedules look in a middle school setting do you think? I get the elem classroom for sure!
I like anchor activities that allow me to conference with individual students.
A8: what said...just look at her back wall sometime...my favorite part of her room!
A8 Ensure 1 to 1 access to technology and let go of constraints that bore kids to tears
think that is the key to their autonomy is to have them provide the evidence.
A8 allow exploration and questions. Not all learning happens because of a curriculum given.
INTEGRATION! Using project base learning models to integrate curricular areas mirrors the real world, jobs don't have subjects
T and Peer feedback! Takes learning to another level!
not all learning happens because of successes either struggle through the failure = lot of learning
Often times they don't know how...they've never experienced the kind of choices that might be available now.
and those failures happen when students are allowed to explore
A8 scaffolded assignments... challenge to go as high as they can and bring in their interests.
When students understand their learning styles, they will advocate for themselves...learning goes deeper!
Allow Ss 2 start in different places. Maybe have scheduled times 4 targets of lesson 4 choice in work & when lesson
Q9: How have you moved to learner-centered environments/what must be present to make it a success? https://t.co/FZ88eR588I
A9: Building Ss autonomy which has been key to learner-centered environments
Allowing students to confer with one another
A9 allow ss to choose how they take notes and learn: thanks to and how they assess: thanks to
so I have a life science unit in 7th sci I could give Ss in my 1st block 3 targets...I am seeing it in my head!
A9 (part2) Teaching Ss. about learning styles & how they learn in order to set them up to make successful learning choices.
I was actually born there. You need great relationships, solid routines and clear learning goals.
A9: Using Google Classroom makes it easy to provide a framework for learning and let Ss choose the path.
A9b also giving more time for student groups to work together and learn together has been sweet to see this year
A9: Technology, blended learning, no pre-determinded schedule, Ss e-portfolios, learning platforms...
A9 in science-completely, natural curiosity +my love of science made it easy. Math-working on it. I miss
A9: Shout out to OneNote in the classroom! Talk about being connected to our Ss & immediate feedback.
And since I'm going there...Shout out to and too! Connected lessons/assessments... AMAZING!
A10: Building classroom climate that values student interests and provides flexibility in instruction.
this comes up so many times in our chats that may need to join our chat sometime!
A9 Student voice and choice, routines, Teacher/Student conferencing
I bet we could figure something out.
being supportive and nurturing of their voices creates the confidence they need to grow
A10: 7 year old daughter says, "when I tell a friend about a story, I'm learning about it too."
This! https://t.co/8i0WsDJJ6b
being supportive and nurturing of their voices creates the confidence they need to grow
A10 Ss need to learn how to choose tasks that will help increase their knowledge and skills
I agree part of that learning process is learning HOW to select those tasks.
Thanks for nurturing and supporting my learning - join us for on Thursday at 8
Thank you for being a part of our chat tonight! Nerve racking going up against World Series https://t.co/d3KsxTDV4n
