Good evening #MakeItReal crew and @MathDenisNJ ! Happy Hump Day Wednesday! It's hard for me to share math love...but I LOVE my math friend Denis and his Instant Relevance book! :) (that count?)
Welcome to #MakeItReal Chat! Tonight we're unpacking some of #HackingMath! Introduce yourselves and share something you LOVE about Math!!! (we're a positive bunch)
Woohoo!! I'm so pumped #MakeItReal is back tonight! Scott from NJ here and I love that math can be so challenging because once you start to understand a concept you feel that much more accomplished (or at least I do).
Curt Slater Proud principal of the amazing @Jrwildcatsroar in MN. Love that I was able to take a class of 3rd students bowling and we turned it into a math lesson every turn! #engaged#MakeItReal
Hi #MakeItReal chat ! Looking forward to hearing about #HackingMath . I love that there multiple ways to the end result and being able to look for patterns!
Soney Day 2nd grade teacher in @friscoisd (north Dallas) and I love teaching math in 2nd because they see what they can really do wth numbers! #MakeItReal
Q1: #HackingMath introduces “the biggest problem of all” as math teachers who don’t love teaching math. Do you see this in your school? How do you help teachers stay passionate about their teaching? #MakeItReal
Q1: #HackingMath introduces “the biggest problem of all” as math teachers who don’t love teaching math. Do you see this in your school? How do you help teachers stay passionate about their teaching? #MakeItReal
A1 For me, if I'm trying new things then I'm having fun and interested. It's important to keep topics fresh for not only students but for us. It helps us to exude the necessary about of passion. #MakeItReal#HackingMath
#MakeItReal#HackingMath Not necessarily that they don't love it, but there is a very traditional view of what math IS. When I ask them to open it up, make it visual, have intentional FUN, they look at me like, "But, it's math class??" More passion about it would be great!
Q1: #HackingMath introduces “the biggest problem of all” as math teachers who don’t love teaching math. Do you see this in your school? How do you help teachers stay passionate about their teaching? #MakeItReal
A1: I'm extremely lucky & I don't see this in my school but it's common! Engage - just like I would my students - relate what we're teaching to real life - WHY are we teaching such an important subject - remember & make it purposeful for us too! #MakeItReal
A1: Don't really see this in my school, but always encourage Ts to bring in things they are passionate & their Ss are passionate about to their lessons, as well as incorporate #tlap ideas. #MakeItReal
1) I may be a non-math lover. Mostly because I am THE WORST at memorizing facts & formulas (because why memorize something I can look up?) & I wanted to know how/why instead. I try to find ways to #makeitreal & meaningful to Ss lives.
A1: We do have Ts who are forced to teach math, and that leads to the problem of math teachers not liking math. Staffing appropriately helps, but if not possible, we need to make sure Ts are supported, validated, and moved to the light... #MakeItReal#HackingMath
A1: Connect math to the real world. Community connections are key. @RaeHughart and @mdeegan122 are notorious for drawing lines from what they are teaching to professionals from their communities. #makeitreal
Q1: #HackingMath introduces “the biggest problem of all” as math teachers who don’t love teaching math. Do you see this in your school? How do you help teachers stay passionate about their teaching? #MakeItReal
A1) I model lessons for Ts, I roll my sleeves up and help teach/run small groups during math. Excitement and enthusiasm are contagious...support is key #MakeItReal
A1: I think that encouraging teachers to try something new and take risks helps them stay current and interested in what they teach. Allowing creative freedom is important for teachers as well as students! #makeitreal#hackingmath

A1: I have an odd joy in teaching math. I like reaching the Ss that don't like math (or school for that matter). I enjoy seeing them develop and grow. #MakeItReal
A1: You have to show teachers that’s it’s more than just about about test scores! Give them freedom to be who they truly are in the classroom Student Learning will happen. #makeitreal#HackingMath
Q1: #HackingMath introduces “the biggest problem of all” as math teachers who don’t love teaching math. Do you see this in your school? How do you help teachers stay passionate about their teaching? #MakeItReal
A1: I try to help others by sharing ideas I see tweeted by #MTBoS and have used in class. Try to share ideas from books read like Ditch the Homework or Mathematical Mindsets. #MakeItReal#HackingMath
Q1: #HackingMath introduces “the biggest problem of all” as math teachers who don’t love teaching math. Do you see this in your school? How do you help teachers stay passionate about their teaching? #MakeItReal
Q1 I am fortunate to work with teachers that love teaching math. I like to reinvigorate colleagues about teaching by introducing new technologies or connecting their personal interests to their classroom #makeitreal
A1 I have found If you work with your school PD team and find amazing people that have the passion and skills you bring them to your school to work with all staff around Math great things start to happen. #MakeItReal#hacklearning
Great answer, Scott! Gotta keep trying new things and learning. Can't expect what we learned in college to get us through 30+ years of teaching. #MakeItReal
A1: Largest issue is teachers (all, including math) valuing content/standards over applicability or relationships. Implementing and inviting to projects which value and use math (which is practically all of them!) gets some strong buy-in! #MakeItReal
#MakeItReal A1 Sorry for jumping in Late...as a Principal, I encouraged my teachers to teach math concepts with real life applications. Having students find those real world applications places the learning on the students where it belongs.
Hi @MathDenisNJ & #makeitreal crew! Michelle from NY, popping in late and only for a minute... but just had to give a big congrats to Denis on the release of #HackingMath !!
A1: if you’re teaching something you hate then you should do something else but it’s your responsibility as the teacher to find a way to engage in it bc if you don’t, kids won’t. They smell fake. #MakeItReal
I’ve seen this in elementary when teachers teach all subjects and math isn’t their forte... Love introducing teachers to collaborative math like in #gmttc or #mysterynumber or resources like zearn, front row, or khan #makeitreal

Q2: Are Homework Review and wasted time getting in the way of active learning? #HackingMath has a solution called The Double Switch! What creative ways have you used to eliminate wasted time in your classroom? #MakeItReal
#MakeItReal
Switching up lessons ever day allows for excitement and curiosity for both Ts AND Ss. Tried a "speed dating" activity yesterday the Ss LOVED!
A1: When you look at things from a different lens, it helps to make the connections with the real world and math can help with those connections #MakeItReal
Totally agree! I wonder how many students dislike math just because they can't remember. If provided different supports they would love math, or be more aware that they CAN be "good" at math. #HackingMath#MakeItReal
Q1: #HackingMath introduces “the biggest problem of all” as math teachers who don’t love teaching math. Do you see this in your school? How do you help teachers stay passionate about their teaching? #MakeItReal
A1 part 2: I do see apathetic teachers in general. I don’t know when we forgot to keep learning but it seems to be the case! I think the power of positive peer pressure can be used when others are learning bc Ts don’t want to be left behind #MakeItReal
A1) I model lessons for Ts, I roll my sleeves up and help teach/run small groups during math. Excitement and enthusiasm are contagious...support is key #MakeItReal
I agree they can look things up or use a calculator, but without some basic memorized knowledge math becomes laborious and kids get lost in the minutia. I see this with my daughter all the time. #makeitreal#hackingmath
A2: Students work using a self-paced method this way if I'm answering Qs its specific to what the student needs & not wasting everyones time on the same concept. #MakeItReal
Q2: Are Homework Review and wasted time getting in the way of active learning? #HackingMath has a solution called The Double Switch! What creative ways have you used to eliminate wasted time in your classroom? #MakeItReal
A1: I’m fortunate to work with a great group of colleagues that love math! I truly believe that loving math or not responding to student misconceptions isn’t the issue. I think some Ts just don’t know where to look when they want to find a new strategy. #MakeItReal#HackingMath
A1 As a first grade teacher who loves math, we use a curriculum that is not great. I go off script and try to make the learning more meaningful by using student interest and encouraging other teachers to do the same. #MakeItReal
A2: Exit tickets in Google Forms are use to guide tomorrow's lesson. MC questions w/ last choice always, "Help me. I'm lost." It's a quick and easy way for Ss to let me know how they're feeling. #MakeItReal
A2: Self assessment of work instead of out loud whole class grading saves bunch of time. Having materials ready as Ss enter, directing Ss as to what they need before being seated are also helps. Using a timer to stay on task per activity is a lifesaver. #MakeItReal#HackingMath
#MakeItReal A2 Flipping the lesson is one method I introduced. Teaching the lesson as homework, and doing problem solving during class time is effective.
I wouldn't consider myself a math educator, but I wonder how important is it that they memorize a particular formula vs. knowing that it exists. (I owe credit to someone on this, but I can't remember who. Maybe @CoachJonCraig) #HackingMath#MakeItReal
In reply to
@HowardKiyuna, @MrsUkena, @CoachJonCraig
#makeitreal#hackingmath A2: Homework was soo last season! Kids who need pract don't do it, those who don't do it all. I've learned to be patient & believe that my kids will get there if I just don't rush them. I slow down in the beginning of the yr to speed up later:)
Q2: Are Homework Review and wasted time getting in the way of active learning? #HackingMath has a solution called The Double Switch! What creative ways have you used to eliminate wasted time in your classroom? #MakeItReal
A1: I’m fortunate to not see this in my school! The math teachers that I work with are excellent and motivated. I learn from them every day. If it were a problem, I would seek to engage them in the same ways I engage my students! #MakeItReal#HACKINGMATH
A2 We do all our work in class, work as teams and check answers as we go. Review for test is in the form of stations so they are always active. What is the Double Switch?? #curious#makeitreal#hackingmath
A2: my review days have become review choice days - they can watch review videos, do extra practice on topics they need work on, or complete a practice test. Allows me time to work 1-on-1 with those who have questions. Ss enjoy having the choice on their work. #MakeItReal
Q2: Are Homework Review and wasted time getting in the way of active learning? #HackingMath has a solution called The Double Switch! What creative ways have you used to eliminate wasted time in your classroom? #MakeItReal
Normally have 2 questions from today's lesson that have 4 possible answer choices. Last choice is always "Help me. I'm lost." Gives me honest feedback before Ss come in next day for tomorrow's lesson which helps me design tomorrow's lesson. #MakeItReal
Q2: Are Homework Review and wasted time getting in the way of active learning? #HackingMath has a solution called The Double Switch! What creative ways have you used to eliminate wasted time in your classroom? #MakeItReal
A2: we have a choice bird in 2nd for homework but no turn in. I use #hyperdocs and set it to where they do a #braindump on @Flipgrid or @padlet to tel me what they already know so I don’t spend time teaching what they don’t know!! #MakeItReal
A2: Having a routine and directions up for students about what is needed and will be done in class. We also have a hyperdoc for math that links all the anchor math activities for the students in one place. #MakeItReal
#MakeItReal A2 As a Principal I made it mandatory to do math-across-the-curriculum so that students saw that math was everywhere, and not just part of the day. When students see math as part of every subject, math comes alive for the students.
A2: We explore problems and sometimes answers lead us to further questions that we want to answer. Plus, I always like introducing students to new math puzzles or math game that we can try to find patterns in. #makeitreal
A2: I'm excited for this chapter. I'm not a fan of math teachers issuing tons of math problems as homework. Kids who get it don't need the practice and kids who don't are frustrated and struggling with parents who can't always help. #unproductive#makeitreal#hackingmath

What steps can/do you take to allow for more productive struggle? #MakeItReal
A2: I restructured our Equations unit into a stations format. There is a video notes, @quizizz, card match, and application station. I use Quizizz as HW; Ss can review their answers at the end and they can retake as many times as they want. #HackingMath#MakeItReal

A3: Focus on learning. Give multiple opportunities for corrections on work, even on tests. Give guidance when needed but encourage the struggle to find possible ways of solving. #MakeItReal
A3: I answer questions with a question! I ask "why?" all the time! If they have an idea for a formula I'll try to create a counter example to push them to explore further. #MakeItReal
A2 One of my favorites is having students create their own video tutorials that then assist their classmates (or themselves) during independent practice. Less fun, but I can also provide that help. I'm intrigued by the Double Switch! #hackingmath#makeitreal
#makeitreal#hackingmath We definitely struggle with struggle. Our Ss deal with a lot of soc/emotional traumas & the class can erupt when they feel uncomfortable. Bringing in tech and visual learning have helped them extend their capacity to grow in perseverance. Still a prob tho

I struggled in math because I didn’t understand the “why” or relevance. S need to struggle a bit to learn, but with appropriate supports. Support the struggle and make it ok to do so. #makeitreal#HackingMath

A3. I always answer questions with questions and I like to call on students that made mistakes to share their thinking. We learn best from the mistakes we make. #makeitreal
A3: Unanswerable questions to start the period! As I learned coding, and still now as the webmaster for my district, I've learned best as I try 2 figure out where code failed. Making sure Ss have 2 think, try, fail, and try again is a worthwhile strategy. #MakeItReal#HackingMath
A3: Normalizing failure and teaching "how to learn." Demonstrating how you come to an answer (looking up an answer, a guide, YouTube, Khan, and more) over and over again. The "teach a man to fish" style of learning. #MakeItReal#HackingMath
A3: when students ask questions, I will usually respond with a question. They don’t always like it but it helps them to process their thinking and realize their own answer without me telling them. #MakeItReal#HackingMath

3) Ask why! Get Ss talking about how they are working through problems, & usually they will catch their own mistakes- or see something they could do differently! We also talk about different ways that people arrived at answers & share thinking! #MakeItReal
A3 I try to give them time. I try to answer their questions with questions to deepen their thinking. I try not to give help but it's hard not to jump in and save! #MakeItReal#hackingmath
I always tell them that I can’t see inside their brain so I need to see their work. I have them walk me back through their steps. Once we begin the journey, the light bulb usually goes off. #HackingMath#makeitreal

#MakeItReal A3 I would assign a problem that students would have trouble with and provide the answer. The answer would help guide them through the process.
A3: My district provided great PD with @srebeducation and @alfordI_SREB over questioning strategies. I answer Ss question with a question. The best is when I say nothing at all, and Ss talk it out “at” me. Turns out they didn’t really need my help at all! #HackingMath#MakeItReal

Kids don’t understand that when I ask them ‘why?’ It doesn’t mean they are wrong. I sound like a 2 yo all day bc I ask why so much. They need to be questioned so they can fully understand and communicate the ideas and process the numbers in elem as that # sense begins #MakeItReal
That's the best part! Getting to pick their brains. So many interesting things going on up in there! Sad that so many people miss that opportunity because they are asking the wrong questions. #makeitreal
A3: Listening to students when they are struggling and asking them to explain their thinking. Asking them some focusing questions to help them continue their work but not give them the answer. #MakeItReal
Tonight's Third and final random winner of a Signed Copy of #HackingMath is Scott Titmas!!! Way to add to that collection of books! Message me where to send it @sdtitmas#MakeItReal
Thank you for joining #MakeItReal tonight!!! I'm so excited to hear your thoughts on #HackingMath! Share with me using one or both hashtags! And have a wonderful rest of the week!
Absolutely! We need to quit treating math class like a M.A.S.H unit where kids need help..FAST! Let's give them time, then listen! #MakeItReal#HackingMath
I'm not sure how in the world I missed this announcement but @MathDenisNJ is a trusted source for all things Math and education. Just purchased #HackingMath on my kindle and cannot wait to read!!! #MakeItReal
He's one of my kiddos that always wants an answer - he's gotten so much better at struggling on his own a bit! Still a long way to go but definitely made improvements! #MakeItReal

A3: When Ss don't understand something immediately, they usually want to throw in the towel. Tried it today on a ##joboaler activity. I found that praising the few Ss that didn't give up, and cheering on the Ss that had given up, pushed them into trying harder.
You can definitely see that he loves your class, Meghan. He is relaxed and happy. He feels at home. Thanks for providing that support for him. #makeitreal
A3: Working with teachers to train students to self assess has been a goal this year for myself & @HuckMath Students need to understand their own learning process & the gaps in their knowledge to be better learners. There's definitely struggle involved. #makeitreal#hackingmath

I have almost 100% gotten rid of homework - I’ve changed my algebra class to a day of guided learning, followed by a day of student-led learning. Make policies, procedures, &expectations clear, and follow through w/ CMP #aintnobodygottimeforwastedtime#makeitreal#HackingMath

Stoked that I just won a copy of @MathDenisNJ ‘s newest book, Hacking Mathematics!! You should jump on Amazon right now and grab a copy for yourself 🙌💯💥 #MakeItReal#HackingMath
I'm an avid @Flipgrid user. Students find it extremely easy to record (and pause while recording in groups), they often use dry erase boards/manipulatives, and they can always go back to see their own videos or their classmates' videos. #HackingMath#MakeItReal#FlipgridFever
Teaching Ss to self-assess &practice metacognition - when Ss are truly struggling, lead them to discovery with a socratic conversation - when they struggle to answer those questions, refer them to their resources (notes/google/etc). #86spoonfeeding#hackingmath#makeitreal
