I'm a Network Admin at Fresno Pacific University who is studying EdTech in a master's program. Looking to learn more about being a Networked Educator this summer #caedchat
HI all! Kim from Placentia YL USD, Digital Learning Instructional Coach. Going to continue my quest to integrate best practices to benefit ALL learners #CAedchat
Hi all! Amanda from Campbell, California. I'm a TOSA returning to the classroom next year to teach 2nd! Excited to learn more about designing thinking this summer! #caedchat
Early Bird registration for the 2018 California STEAM Symposium ends this Fri, June 8th! Register to join more than 3000 #STEAM educators in Long Beach on Oct. 28-29th for rigorous learning, new resources, inspiration & networking https://t.co/p8mYnzCx54#caedchat#casteam18
A1) Students lose knowledge over the summer. Too much time is spent rehashing previous content at the beginning of the next school year when students have lost much of their mastery. #caedchat
Emily from Lake Tahoe, I teach elementary and middle school music. Looking forward to learning about more ways to integrate technology in the classroom! #caedchat
A1: It was important enough for us to design our school year with a 45 week shorter day year. The thought was that the long summer wouldn't help Ss with disabilities. #caedchat
A1:We should always encourage our learners to be curious. If we create a habit of curiosity our students will always seek new learning opportunities.#caedchat
A1) Students should learn early that "Learning" is not just from August to June in the confines of 4 walls. Learning is an experience that can and should happen anywhere! #caedchat
A1) Students should learn early that "Learning" is not just from August to June in the confines of 4 walls. Learning is an experience that can and should happen anywhere! #caedchat
A1: I think it’s important for students to realize that learning can happen anytime, not just in the confines of a classroom. Promoting a culture of learning for learning’s sake, especially during the summer, is huge. #caedchat
A1: SPED program all summer (free), Enrichment (fee based), ELD STEAM Camp (in conjunction with CSUF. High School is online program. Always seeking more ways to meet needs #CAedchat
A2: my district does a great job providing learning opportunities in the summer, including enrichment programs. We also have snamszing migrant program during summer school that promotes a college-going culture #caedchat
A2: SPED program all summer (free), Enrichment (fee based), ELD STEAM Camp (in conjunction with CSUF. High School is online program. Always seeking more ways to meet needs #CAedchat
A2: we are providing a morning academic session focusing on math and are partnering with community partners, a local children’s @SDCDM320 and the YMCA for half day enrichment activities art, science, swim lessons so fun! #caedchat
A2: Our district has offered a variety of summer programs-- summer school (Ss invited based on grades), enrichment programs, day camps via our CampbellCare after school program... #caedchat
A2) I’m at a university and summers are usually pretty “dead” around here. I know that summer sessions take place, but it’s not very noticeable around campus. However, online programs typically run through the summer as part of their cohort programs. #caedchat
Not directly applicable since I don't work in a school district, but students on film sets aren't required to have any school time on set if their regular school isn't in session. Still, that doesn't necessarily mean I can't find an opportunity for some learning... #caedchat
#caedchat Q2: our city has a lot but not our district. The local libraries have a lot of fun activities as well and I have been trying to push those as a good place for students to go.
A2) Our local college @Fresno_State has fantastic STEM academies for littles to middles, and high school students. They even have a partnership with @NASA for SCUBA activities to simulate space! #caedchat
Oops... forgot to say A2 -- sorry; I'm new to twitter chatting. Anyway, though, I should admit that the fact I say I CAN find some teaching opportunities on set during the summer doesn't mean I really HAVE done that in the past... but I should try to change that. #caedchat
A2: amazing migrant, SPED, and credit retrieval opportunities. Wish there was a budget for more enrichment and arts-based program, but my district is doing an awesome job with the budget we have keeping the learning going during the summer #caedchat
A1: Ss will actually forget
Learning during the year.
A2: Formal learning activities: Summer School
Informal learning activities:
#SEL activities:
playing outside, playdates, playing with their siblings.
#CAedchat
A2: Selma has some limited summer school offerings; because of budget restrictions, they're mostly tied to special programs (ELs, intervention, AVID). I'd love to see some creativity in funding other enrichment opportunities! #caedchat
A2a:Interesting to note we had to invite over 2000 kids to fill 500 full day spaces. I’m thinking it might be better to use those funds for intervention and enrichment throughout the year during and after school #caedchat
A2a: We've been lucky to partner w/community organizations during the school year to provide unique learning opps. Wondering how we might utilize those partnerships to also create some type of summer learning events? #caedchat
A2) AND there is a STEM academy @Fresno_State for 11th/12th graders who are thinking about becoming teachers! It is called the T.A.C.O.S academy! It is a week-long dive into innovative lesson planning... and guess what is served for lunch on Tuesdays! #caedchat
A3: Reading incentive, work in conjunction with local library. Provide links for online math. Encourage daily journal writing. Maybe even a calendar of topics. #CAedchat
#caedchat A1 Wouldn’t they be learning (not necessarily stuff from state standards) anyway? Reflection and expressing and informed by feedback is what’s missing..
A3: The best idea I ever saw fro this was just a couple of weeks ago...can't remember if it was @pernilleripp or @donalynbooks : their school checks out books to students over the summer! LET THEM READ! #caedchat
A3) Perhaps providing online coursework that can be implemented into fun, summertime activities would help facilitate this. Otherwise, educational camps with parent involvement would probably be the best bet if money weren’t an option. #caedchat
A3: Some of our sites organized parent workshops at the end of last year-- my TOSA team trained families on some simple & low-cost or free games/activities they could use at home with children to reinforce reading & math #caedchat
A3: Advertise community events, familiarize them resources available in the community. Provide them@the opportunity to volunteer in your summer school classes. We use Facebook a lot for this. #caedchat
A3: video tutorials! Most students have smartphones or access to YouTube (hotspot places for WiFi). @Flipgrid would be great to provide feedback. Especially or ELLs! #caedchat
A3) We as teachers can keep a resource open, like Google Classroom with enrichment activities which can be scheduled to pop up during the summer months! Or a summer @Flipgrid cohort for extension discussions. #caedchat
A3: Learning takes many forms. Encourage families to be active, to do things together. Go on a hike. Explore the library. Play catch. Don’t send home worksheets. #caedchat
A3: The best idea I ever saw fro this was just a couple of weeks ago...can't remember if it was @pernilleripp or @donalynbooks : their school checks out books to students over the summer! LET THEM READ! #caedchat
Yes!! Utilizing technology is an easy & low maintenance way for Ts and Ss to keep a learning community running during summer. I held a book club w/Ss that were interested via @edmodo and @Seesaw#caedchat
A3) We as teachers can keep a resource open, like Google Classroom with enrichment activities which can be scheduled to pop up during the summer months! Or a summer @Flipgrid cohort for extension discussions. #caedchat
A3: Establish regular communication with parents during the school year that continues through the summer for accountability. Partner with the students' next year's teacher to provide preparatory assignments. #caedchat
A4) I’m going to steal from others who have already mentioned it and say the public library. However, travelling to museums, landmarks, and national parks can foster learning as well. #caedchat
For me I am big into STEM :) So @PhETsims lessons with a @flipgrid discussion. A 3D design activity with @tinkercad and the best designs get printed with @makerbot and presented to the student on their first day back. Maybe a @WeVideo collaborative video activity. #caedchat

A3: I know I jumped in late but also important to let kids be kids... my daughter has so much summer AP homework. It’s not cool! What about her time to explore interests or just enjoy a break w/fam? #caedchat
A2: Chicago has World Class Museums that offer Summer Edu Programs
#ILedchat 😬🍎📰
@FieldMuseum
🙌🏼 Máximo the Titanosaur🦖 exhibit
@shedd_aquarium Is taking visitors to Lake Michigan: 🐟Ecosystem 🐡
@msichicago
🙌🏼Science Behind Pixar exhibit
#caedchat
A4: Okay...so you know how @TableTalkMath gives resources to parents for how to talk about math in everyday situations? THIS IS AMAZING! Does anything like it exist in other subjects?!? #CAedchat
A3: Gamify summer reading.
Libraries and books are widely available, but you need to bring students to them.
If you gamify the experience, you can motivate and guide students to read over the summer.
#caedchat
THe YMCA kids should ALL learn to swim. We have @SDCDM320 and @TheCCAE. lots of bike paths and hiking trails. Library, parks and recreation, local parks #caedchat
I found a handful of research on the topic-- this article said one month & more prevelant among our Ss from lower-SES backgrounds

A4: public library! Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, community colleges- all provide varied learning opportunitiesduring the summer, many for FREE! #caedchat
A4: I've had libraries give gift cards for reading x # of books. 'Fun' online sites like Prodigy. Turn them on to youtube channels. We're watching Bon Appetit pastry chef upscale common candies from scratch - trail error. Do things that naturally expand to private life. #caedchat
#caedchat A4: There are some botanical gardens that also have some good educational potential. There's the Huntington Garden here in Pasadena, and I recently visited San Francisco and found the botanical garden in Golden Gate Park there very interesting.
A4) The ZOO! An Exploratorium. A makerspace with 3D printers, lazer/wood engravers. If this is not possible a museum experience with @google arts and culture app with VR capabilities. #caedchat

A5: Summer homework is like summer compliance. I have seen my own kids wait until the last two weeks to complete a #frickinpacket of DOK1 questions. Not a fan. I think it could be done well if reevaluated. #caedchat
A3 I like fun summer activity idea sheets that can go home before summer, activities should be learning in nature but still fun and exploratory with an emphasis on family involvement and fun, #caedchat
I totally should have tagged our own @Jstevens009 If you have not ever heard of @TableTalkMath before, go check it out. Great newsletter, great book, tweets, Instagram posts...good stuff for parents AND educators! #caedchat

A5) I personally never did summer homework as a kid and if in the form of packets, I’d say it’s a bad idea. However, maybe something creative like a scavenger hunt or a project that gets kids out of their houses could be useful. Grow a garden, build a robot, etc. #caedchat
Honestly, these topics worry me because there's a lot of assumptions being made about access to resources, home life, etc ..some kids just want access to food over the summer #caedchat
A5) The homework should be to explore your own interests and discover what makes you happy! Otherwise all you will get is rushed work a student completes the day before school starts #caedchat
Me too! I have had students come back and say they finished their projects over the summer and they were so proud and planning on doing more. #caedchat
A4 I suggest local museums, science centers, beaches, botanical parks, local parks, art galleries, concerts, camps and some times local tutors etc #caedchat
I am not sure it can be done well. There will always be those who can’t/don’t do it and that starts the year off on wrong foot for those kiddos #caedchat
A5: Summer homework is like summer compliance. I have seen my own kids wait until the last two weeks to complete a #frickinpacket of DOK1 questions. Not a fan. I think it could be done well if reevaluated. #caedchat
A5: I have only seen required reading work with some Honors and AP classes. It requires student buy-in. However, I tend to favor having summers open to explore, play and be . #caedchat
A5 I am NOT a fan is summer homework, kids at that grade level are in school for 6-7hrs a day and many have 2-4hrs of homework after that, DAILY, summer is a time to rest and reboot for students as well as teachers #caedchat
A3: Remind parents of the importance of experiences. Go to library, museum, or park and learn together. Engage your kids, enjoy them, have conversations. #caedchat
We have summer food too. But I also know Ss who babysit younger siblings & can't leave for food. Just seems hard to discuss summer online math or book logs when basic Bloom's not met. #caedchat
Love idea of turning Ss on to specific YouTube channels. Some of our Ss can't even get to library in summer bc parents working during day. They're already on YouTube so how about teach them to use it differently? And think about what they can do after watching the vid #caedchat
A5: Our school has a summer fun bingo board where families can send pics (using Twitter or email) of what they're doing this summer. Guess that's their hw. #caedchat
A5: No required summer HW please.
If content doesn't fit into the regular school year and a school really wants it, it should go through the proper channels and support it with summer school.
Give the students college credits if they are willing to go that far.
#caedchat
A5: Noooooooo 🙅🏻♀️ I prefer printing learning and student choice & voice- let them learn about what makes them happy. No assignments, just creativity, passion, and exploration. #caedchat
I'd like to see AP courses just go away... they don't resemble any college courses I took, and more colleges are not accepting credit. What's the point? #caedchat
Wow! You all are on fire tonight-- loving all the response, ideas and resources being shared! I don't know about @MsHolickyPHS can barely keep up :) #caedchat
A6 I plan to use @RemindHQ to stay in touch with my students this summer. Keeping communication open lets me ask about their reading and adventures. #caedchat
A6: Encourage passion-based learning during the rest of the year 🤓
I launched a Moonshot project with my last group of students. Besides the learning content and product, it was a lesson in initiative.
Over the following summer, the students continued to revise!
#caedchat
A6-A) Have students come up with a plan for their summer, before summer. We can then provide them resources to help them realize their goals. #caedchat
Yea, that's just not cool for students. What if parents can't help? What if they do it wrong? What if they don't do it at all? So many negative outputs possible. #caedchat
#caedchat A6) Well, I guess students will embark in passion-based learning on their own if you give them a passion FOR learning, but how to do THAT isn't an easy question. Discussing their interests and trying to pique their curiosity about some open questions may be part of it?
A6 I am available all summer for email communication with my kids even those that have graduated, if s Ss sets up a project before summer starts I am happy to provide feedback and motivation over the summer, learning RPG can also keep going #caedchat
A6: You could provide the structure to help support a passion project over the summer...even a #flipgrid for sharing ideas and feedback over the summer. #caedchat
A6: Doing a #20time#geniushour project encourages Ss to find their passion. Students often times don't finish their entire project or think of more things to do. Encouraging them to follow their passion over the summer is fun and exciting #caedchat
A6: Part 1: We should always encourage passion for learning. I am a big believer in #PBL and asking "essential questions," and then exploring. Having some structure and support is critical. #caedchat
Awesome! Just sharing experiences of my middle school Ss as a plea for us all to consider that life is difficult for some. Summer HW shouldn't add to it #caedchat
A6: Challenge students to learn something new, or get better at something. From jumprope to a musical instrument...maybe less structure and a clear goal might give opportunties for students to seek something more authentic. #caedchat
A6: Challenge students to learn something new, or get better at something. From jumprope to a musical instrument...maybe less structure and a clear goal might give opportunties for students to seek something more authentic. #caedchat
Could be a good opp to teach some executive functioning skills... help Ss calendar out summer goals, plans, etc. during last weeks of school... whether specific to learning or personal jobs or chores #caedchat
A6a: Teach them research skills so they can find the resources to support their learning. Encourage them to share their uniqueness in a screencast about what they are learning. #caedchat
A6) I always ask my students to assign me homework! I tell them 3 things I want to build over the summer, which I have never built before, and tell them I will learn how. I then post updates and pictures of its progress through our @RemindHQ#Caedchat
A6: I am with @mrwisley I think leading by example is the best way to go. Tell them what you are going to learn and have a discuss about what they could learn. #caedchat
It adds to the achievement gap when we create these types of requirements. Those w/out access to help/support/encouragement fall further behind peers #caedchat
A7 Provide a list of community partnerships/opportunities with meaningful volunteer options. Library, summer school, retirement homes, parks and rec, vet offices, preschools, etc and maybe some sort of reflection about their experience. #caedchat
A6b offer to help them find activities before summer starts, often educators have more connections via plns or just yrs teaching and can find opportunities kids of the families may miss #caedchat
And maybe we can schedule in some time during the last month of school for Ss to set up & schedule these connections? Might take a little pressure off of having to do all these things during school yr #caedchat
A caveat to all these awesome ideas: Not all Ss have awesome summer breaks. Not all have positive home lives. Not all have consistent online access. What happens for those Ss? #caedchat
Do you know of any sites that make finding volunteer opportunities easier? I've used https://t.co/Wtq8M0P4ye before, but it's geared for adults. #caedchat
A7: I’d love for our educators to engage in externships so that we can bring even more relavance to our curriculum. How cool would it be for an educator and a student to pair up with a business or community partner. #caedchat
A7 when service learning is incorporated into the school year Ss have acces to many organizations that can work with and will already have formed relations with them #caedchat
Be sure to follow some new educators from tonight’s chat AND use the #caedchat hashtag all week long to share resources, ideas, and questions! Continue the discussion!
Love to all of you in #caedchat land. Summer is upon us. Recharge, revive, explore and reflect. The 18-19 year will be here soon. P.S I had 100% attendance in @CAedchat this school year!!!! Met my goal.
YES!! Our Innovation team & TOSAs are working on a small program right now for next year. Will be our 1st try... looking forward to seeing how it goes! #caedchat
