I'm Bev Sharritt, Patins specialist for Blind/Low Vision and anxious moderator for tonight. Thanks peeps for launching without me! #PatinsIcam
  • jconti281 Dec 11 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: any break leads to an opportunity for unstructured time. Some students like this freedom but others thrive when given a set schedule and task. #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Dec 11 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: Anxiety, eagerness, confusion, pressure to finish up school, loss of social group. #patinsicam
  • BevSharritt Dec 11 @ 8:38 PM EST
Q2: Schools are a safe place for some Ss. What are some ways Ts can alleviate some anxiety 4 an extended time off? #PatinsIcam
  • jlfahlbush Dec 11 @ 8:38 PM EST
For some students, school means guaranteed meals and a safe place. Heading home for the holidays can lead to extra anxiety for some students #PatinsIcam
  • jconradslp Dec 11 @ 8:39 PM EST
Schedules are out of whack, anxiety over holiday performances, being away from safe classrooms and friends, traveling and it's so dang dark outside! #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Dec 11 @ 8:39 PM EST
A1: Many Ss feel a lot of anxiety before break due to leaving the daily routines of what they know, consistency, where they eat, stay warm. I remember having a lot of heightened behaviors due to that feeling. #patinsicam
  • PATINSSandi Dec 11 @ 8:39 PM EST
Some SS & Specialists thrive on a consistent schedule. A break /change causes a large dysfunction in our lives. #PatinsIcam
  • katietaylorIN Dec 11 @ 8:39 PM EST
A2: perhaps talking about what is about to happen and give them ideas on activities or things to do while not in school #PatinsIcam
  • tomasinojess3 Dec 11 @ 8:39 PM EST
A1: I believe the anticipation for a break can bring a lack of structure and predictability leading to anxiousness #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Dec 11 @ 8:40 PM EST
A2: A book or activity or assignment from the T the child can use to continue the routine and comfort of school. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Dec 11 @ 8:40 PM EST
    At like 5:00pm #IHateDaylightSavings time #PatinsIcam

  • BevSharritt Dec 11 @ 8:40 PM EST
Q3: Learning goes beyond the 4 walls of the classroom. What are some ways Ts can continue learning/sharing experiences during a holiday break? #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Dec 11 @ 8:41 PM EST
A3: Blog posts, journaling, a scavenger hunt/challenge to collect items to bring back and discuss after break #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Dec 11 @ 8:41 PM EST
A3: Take the time for the class to share their experiences, the good and the bad. #PatinsIcam
  • jconti281 Dec 11 @ 8:41 PM EST
A2: ask how they are feeling and what are their concerns over break. I had a student who was anxious about talking with unfamiliar family members during parties so we brainstormed convo topics, questions and ways he could get his "me time" if he was overwhelmed #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Dec 11 @ 8:41 PM EST
A2: Ts can assist Ss to have accommodations at home over break, like access to audiobooks, etc. Backchannels set up for the Ss to share and communicate over break #PatinsIcam
  • jconradslp Dec 11 @ 8:41 PM EST
A2: send journals or little visual reminders of strategies they use in the classroom to use at home. Help families prepare kids for transition to and from break. #PatinsIcam
    • BevSharritt Dec 11 @ 8:38 PM EST
Q2: Schools are a safe place for some Ss. What are some ways Ts can alleviate some anxiety 4 an extended time off? #PatinsIcam
  • jlfahlbush Dec 11 @ 8:41 PM EST
Check in with Ss over break via email or a texting service #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Dec 11 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1: Even BEFORE the break even takes place, schedules at school can be very different than "typical," which can make focusing on content the days before break very difficult for some Ss with and without disabilities. I used to despise the days before a break as a kid! #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Dec 11 @ 8:42 PM EST
What kind of a texting service? #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jlfahlbush
  • BevSharritt Dec 11 @ 8:43 PM EST
    something like Remind?#PatinsIcam

Q4: What are some ways that we can support our Ss’ transition back into their daily school routines? #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Dec 11 @ 8:44 PM EST
Students with #autism will benefit from visual schedules showing how long break will be, dates, & visuals to guide understanding of what break really means & that consistency will come back. So teaching flexibility #PatinsIcam
  • jconradslp Dec 11 @ 8:44 PM EST
A3: find holiday resources and programs at the library! Learned my local library has bird watching backpacks to check out and I just checked out some color blindness correcting glasses to try on a family member. So cool #PatinsIcam
    • BevSharritt Dec 11 @ 8:40 PM EST

  • BGentilleGreen Dec 11 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2: Ts can alleviate anxiety by letting Ss know they can reach out if needed over break and by providing families with community resource options #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Dec 11 @ 8:44 PM EST
A4: prepare them by talking about home routines and school routines. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Dec 11 @ 8:45 PM EST
Once over summer break I had a ss throw a rock through my window. It was hard to convince the rest of my family that it was a reaction to a situation where he missed having me there. #PatinsIcam
  • jconradslp Dec 11 @ 8:45 PM EST
    I also benefit from that! #PatinsIcam #NeedMyCalendar

A4: ease back into the routine, make sure to talk about schedules and what is expected again, modeling what we are wanting them to do. Monkey See, Monkey Do still exists #PatinsIcam

Q5: Engaging students after a break is difficult for even the most creative teacher. What are some strategies you use when re-engaging kids who have been on break? #PatinsIcam
  • jlfahlbush Dec 11 @ 8:47 PM EST

  • jconradslp Dec 11 @ 8:47 PM EST
Well it was supposed to be an advent calendar of beverages, but Aldi was out. But almost always two types of calendars, a lite tech one with a count down and my digital one. It's referenced several times a day! #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Dec 11 @ 8:47 PM EST
A4: NOT focusing on WHAT they did over break...but how glad u are to see them again and take time to ask the most overlooked question in my book "Are u ok?" We will know to ask that as we have spent time on relationship building w our Ss. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Dec 11 @ 8:47 PM EST
Yes! I always warn teachers about doing “countdowns” in class. Not everyone is counting down the days to break! #patinsicam
#PatinsIcam

this beverage visual sounds intriguing! #PatinsIcam

A5: Pre-focus movement activities (animal walks). Mini-breaks, chunking activities. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Dec 11 @ 8:48 PM EST
Yes! I hated wasting time more than anything else! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jconti281
  • BGentilleGreen Dec 11 @ 8:49 PM EST
Agreed! It was hard on me a as a teacher, too! It's better on all if I just play Scrooge!! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty
  • PATINSSandi Dec 11 @ 8:49 PM EST
Exactly! It just makes the time seem either more dire or more worthless. It emphasizes the time out of school which may or may not be a positive. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @RachelH872
  • katietaylorIN Dec 11 @ 8:49 PM EST
I like the sound of chunking activities... #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JulieHKuhn
  • jconti281 Dec 11 @ 8:50 PM EST
A5: a little more yoga/brain gym and a lot more reminders of routines and expectations. Also a good time to revise any classroom rules since they now have a whole semester under their belt #PatinsIcam
  • BevSharritt Dec 11 @ 8:50 PM EST
Q6: Part of engaging students is allowing them to share experiences. What are some ways Ss can express their experiences after holiday break that allow for multiple means of expression? #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Dec 11 @ 8:50 PM EST
Consistency is always a cure for anxiety. A ss job is to find the line in the sand. It is too much work and stress for everyone if it keeps moving. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @BGentilleGreen, @danielgmcnulty
  • ksuding Dec 11 @ 8:51 PM EST
A5: Again, not focusing on WHAT a Ss did over break. Some Ss will completely disengage from that question/writing prompt, etc. Allow for time TO transition and reacquainted. I remember having fear of forgetting friend's names! It happens! #PatinsIcam
  • BevSharritt Dec 11 @ 8:51 PM EST
revising rules acknowledges that they've matured a bit since the start of the year. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jconti281
  • JulieHKuhn Dec 11 @ 8:53 PM EST
A6: multi media, make a QR mystery hunt of the items Ss bring back from their home scavenger hunts. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Dec 11 @ 8:53 PM EST
Who are you people? 😂😂😂 #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty, @jconti281
  • BevSharritt Dec 11 @ 8:54 PM EST
Q7: How can we remain sensitive to Ss sharing diverse holiday break experiences and/or would prefer to be IN school during that time? #PatinsIcam
  • jconradslp Dec 11 @ 8:54 PM EST
A6: one of the classrooms I worked with had developed a community of shared writing, and when we came back in January we focused on future goals and plans, it felt fresh and hopeful and reflected on all we worked on the previous semester #PatinsIcam
    • BevSharritt Dec 11 @ 8:50 PM EST
Q6: Part of engaging students is allowing them to share experiences. What are some ways Ss can express their experiences after holiday break that allow for multiple means of expression? #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Dec 11 @ 8:54 PM EST
A6: Focus on this opportunity to be truly STUDENT centered in this regard. Just ASK them how or if or what they would like to share. #PatinsIcam Options are endless but I understand some Ss do need options: pictures, video, audio, Flipgrid, iMovie trailer, writing, acting, etc.
  • JulieHKuhn Dec 11 @ 8:55 PM EST
A7: focus on non-gift discussions and activities that cover a range of experiences while getting students back ito the routine of school. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Dec 11 @ 8:55 PM EST
TRUE! Wasting of time is probably one of the 3 things I most struggle with. ...besides the feeling of pencil on paper. ugh. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @RachelH872, @jconti281
  • jconti281 Dec 11 @ 8:55 PM EST
A6: allow the way they share to be private, either via a journal, drawing/painting, or 1:1 convo with a chosen listener. Allow the Ss to choose if they wish to share their break activities. #PatinsIcam
  • jconradslp Dec 11 @ 8:56 PM EST
okay, I'm getting it. Like holiday crafts with glitter. Totally objectionable! #PatinsIcam

Q8: How will YOU be spending holiday break? Ts need times to relax and kick back...what are YOUR strategies to be refreshed? #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Dec 11 @ 8:57 PM EST
It's important to find some way to connect that doesn't emphasize socioeconomic differences. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JulieHKuhn
  • JulieHKuhn Dec 11 @ 8:57 PM EST
A8: Read, explore hobby activities, visit friends/family, family puzzle week #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Dec 11 @ 8:57 PM EST
A7: Well, you can always begin the transition back with conversations, writing prompts of "What did u miss about not being at school?" I NOW challenge a T to do that....ha ha The responses may be priceless #PatinsIcam
  • katietaylorIN Dec 11 @ 8:58 PM EST
A8: Looking forward to snowboarding with fam! #PatinsIcam
  • BGentilleGreen Dec 11 @ 8:58 PM EST
A7:. We can create a classroom environment from day 1 that celebrates diversity and variability so that anytime someone shares their unique experience, it's valued and the" norm" #PatinsIcam
  • BevSharritt Dec 11 @ 8:58 PM EST
A8: I'll be updating my Google Calendar for all of the times I've signed up to moderate. . . then find lots of opportunities for music/singing #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Dec 11 @ 8:59 PM EST
A8: Sunshine and Family time! #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Dec 11 @ 8:59 PM EST

A8: I always like to say "not checking work email" but I'm going to be honest and say that I will, but not as much, and I've got a stack of board games that need to be played with friends and family. #PatinsIcam
