#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
Helllllllllooooooooooooo!!! Kristen here from PA! I teach 6th grade physical science. It’s raining and none of my kids could guess that I was playing that song on my plastic trumpet today..... #learnlap
Hey everyone! Glad to be back with my #LearnLAP tweeps! Been too long. I am Cory Colby and I am a government and politics professor at Lone Star College from Conroe TX.
Adam. Math teacher by day......."Raziel" in Anne Meara's "After-Play" by night. That's my role. Literally. I'm actually back stage at rehearsal right now. TwinMasks theatre in Twinsburg, OH first 3 weekends of October. Come see it! :) #learnlap
A1) To me, Genius Hour is when students are provided with the time & opportunity to explore their passions and interests as they develop skills in research, writing, planning, problem solving, collaboration, and presenting ideas. #LearnLAP#GeniusHour
Hi #learnLAP.. Excited to chat about #geniushour with you tonight. I will do my best to keep up--having some technical difficulties with the internet this evening!
A1 - My definition of Passion Time is providing time each week for students to pursue topics/activities of their own interest in class as a means of making school more applicable to them. I want my students to have curiosity, drive & the skills to learn on their own! #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP
My personal definition of Genius hour/passion time is when students work either together or by themselves to work on something that they're interested in and want to learn more of. It's a time for them to learn something about themselves too and what they can do.
A1: a time where ss can take time to explore passions that they wouldn’t normally have in their day. Combines passion with a purpose to make lives better. Includes passion, planning, project, product, and presentation. Ss must use the scientific process and reflection. #learnlap
A1 it’s time that ss use to pursue their own interests through active inquiry and investigation. It may be time daily or a set block weekly but it is really a time for ss to apply their skills, build their executive functioning and work on the 4cs #LearnLAP
A1: For my kinder Ss, Genius Hour is exploring a few of our Wonder Wall questions as a class (books, YouTube, BrainPop, Nat Geo Kids, etc) and then everyone picks the best new thing they learned to work in groups designing a poster. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP

a1) Hi, Lane from MO. I don't have genius hours very often so much as genius moments where we acknowledge insights & I later email parents to celebrate. Growth mindset. #learnlap
What a great way to approach for the littles, Amy! I've been wondering how to work this for my Firsties, and I think you've just inspired me! :-) #LearnLAP
Hi! James joining in from South Texas... Instructional Technology...A1 Passion/Genius Hour is my opportunity to really be quiet and learn from them #LearnLAP
#geniushour is a time for Ss to explore topics they are interested in. They choose how to share their expertise when they are ready. Embedded skills include collaboration, reading & understanding informational text, speaking & listening skills & so much more. #learnLAP
A1. A time for my students to work together to analyze and synthesize the information and really dig in to learn and create more questions than answers. #LearnLAP
A1: I have never used #genuis with Ss before and would be interested in how to use it in a college class setting. I have understood it to mean, designated time to work on a passion project that has learning as the driver. #LearnLAP
A1: My definition is - Using your time to work on a project to learn something new, better yourself, better your life or the life of others, or change the world in a small or big way. #LearnLAP
Hi! James joining in from South Texas... Instructional Technology...A1 Passion/Genius Hour is my opportunity to really be quiet and learn from them #LearnLAP
A1. We are trying to push a "genius hour" called #steamstudyhall. Kiddos can choose between different mediums to really express themselves and invent. #LearnLAP
A2 - I spend 20 minutes explaining what it is, why we do it, how it will look in our classroom & the steps we take during each round. Students brainstorm personal interests & attempt to write them as "PHAT Essential Questions." Over the next days, I refine & approve ?s. #LearnLAP
A2: it’s important to model #GeniusHour! The first few, Ss will be overwhelmed with freedom and many won’t know what to do. I had Ss brainstorm what they liked, what they were good at, and what they wanted to know more about. Using these lists, they’d choose a topic. #LearnLAP
A2: I introduced it to students in Grades 2-5, as an afterschool club. Then, those students introduced it to their class(es)..in my classroom it was built in. Each subject had time devoted to #GeniusHour...even if it was #GeniusMinute#learnlap
A2: i structure mine by having students focus on a world issue they my want to solve. we break into groups with similar topics (by placing stickies on a wall...like an edcamp) and begin asking questions about those issues and/or their topic ideas. #learnLAP#geniushour
A1:giving students to work on things that ignite their passions, solve problems thatnsje their world better. They use skills that go way beyond any specific content area. #learnlap
Learning from all these educators in #LearnLAP for the first time!! My name is Kaylee I am from #LTPS in NJ @LTPS1 I have been inspired by the words and actions of @JayBilly2 and his PIRATE attitude to dive further into this movement #TLAP
ok let's try again, internet on for 2 minutes, off for 10.
I introduce it by making it part of the first week of school when we go over what the class will be like
#learnlap
A2. Almost all of our projects originate from our class Wonder Wall and through interactions in our class Maker Space. The focus on naturally existing phenomena through the NGSS have also provided inspiration #LearnLAP
A2: I have them wonder. They brainstorm a list of anything and everything they want to know more about from the most simplistic to the fantastical. We hone from there. #LearnLAP
A1 #Genius Hour is a time for students to follow their own interests towards testing, questioning, learning, doing, and/or making with the support of a classroom of learners. #LearnLAP
A2. #steamstudyhall is a district initiative that we are trying to roll out in after school and Saturday academies. @mrstrangio1 has gotten superintendent support, its just about growing it. #LearnLAP
A2: it’s important to model #GeniusHour! The first few, Ss will be overwhelmed with freedom and many won’t know what to do. I had Ss brainstorm what they liked, what they were good at, and what they wanted to know more about. Using these lists, they’d choose a topic. #LearnLAP
A2) I've not quite figured out how to let students drive their learning via Genius Hour. We don't have 1:1 technology, and very little library time...I'm hoping to get ideas here! #LearnLAP
A2: 1. ss blogged definition of passion, what they’re passionate about. Show video of other’s answers. Read “what do you do with idea?” Talk about passion/purpose. Do interest inventory and bracket. Show how I blogged my passion project experience to show reflection. #learnlap
Lately my Ss are generating crazy amounts of questions (YAY curiosity!!) so I've talked with a 6th grade teacher who wants to partner her Ss with my class. My kiddos will work with hers in groups of 2 or 4 to tackle individual topics of interest and generate projects. #LearnLAP
A2 I have a planning sheet that I share with students where they jot down a topic, some ideas/questions, start to think about how they want to share what they learned, list any materials they may need. We both sign it to make it official and then they are off to work #LearnLAP
A2 Never implemented it but I would want kids to apply a skill or idea or medium they love to some part of history (which is what I taught). Then I would want a public product for sharing with the class and community. #LearnLAP
A2. I introduce passion time as a time for them to stretch their brains and create something that negates the need for a paper test. I often have my high schoolers create board games. #LearnLAP
A2:At the high school level, students pose questions that aim to solve global/local problems. They aim to answe those qs over the course of the year in PBL. #learnlap
A2 My intro begins well before we officially roll out. A few times a month, during reflections, I ask what else Ss would like to study. I record these thoughts and share them back w Ss before GH begins. Then we populate a Wonder Wall. #LearnLAP
A2: I have not yet done a #geniushour with my Ss and I'm wondering how to introduce it...I have gotten some great ideas from peers but I'm still a bit nervous #LearnLAP
A2. By explaining to them, what this time will consist of, a project that you will be working on driven from your passions, interests, likes, desires.Once finished, you can present it to class through a presentation. You may have to do some research for background. #learnlap
A2 Our student tech leadership team posed some norms such as the time being focused, goal-driven, and helpful to some population...I chimed in with organization and helping with time management... #LearnLAP
A2: I am a little sad but also love that I don’t really have answers because I am exploring this concept for the college. I would probably introduce it with the learning objectives for the course and then work with Ss to decide the reqs. #LearnLAP
A2 I introduce Genius hour with an Encyclopedia in front of each student ... their assignment is to find something interesting inside the book that they like. #LearnLAP
A2 Unfortunately I don’t do this in class right now, but i do run a TED-Ed Club which is in essences the same idea. I am hoping when we switch to the NGSS standards, I can have more time to do it in my classes. #learnlap
A2. Almost all of our projects originate from our class Wonder Wall and through interactions in our class Maker Space. The focus on naturally existing phenomena through the NGSS have also provided inspiration #LearnLAP
A1: Last year I started with more structure and guidelines but most of the students just ended up making slides the entire year. This year I am starting with some creative building/ team challenges and letting students explore different ways we can show our learning. #LearnLAP
A3) I love to follow the maker movement and #Makerspace blogs for ideas and resources. Tech resources, apps, and recyclable materials are great finds. Coding and game design are always popular with my kids! @BloxelsBuilder is always a fan fav. #LearnLAP#GeniusHour
Before starting #geniushour, I introduce a Wonder Can. Students leave notes about what they wonder about & we read them for ideas later. We read What Do You Do With An Idea?, & watch the Kid President video. I've also used @thrively to help Ss explore their passions. #learnLAP
Learning from all these educators in #LearnLAP for the first time!! My name is Kaylee I am from #LTPS in NJ @LTPS1 I have been inspired by the words and actions of @JayBilly2 and his PIRATE attitude to dive further into this movement #TLAP
A2 After brainstorming we invite Ss to record 5-10 ideas to share with families. We want Ps to weigh in on possible learning opportunities as well. All those talks during dinner, during a car ride, right before bed..."Why do Monarchs only lay eggs on milkweed?" #LearnLAP
A2 we learn a new skill together - something you can learn in about an hour to get them excited about learning new things - then it is their turn to figure out what they want to learn for the sake of learning!! #learnlap
A1: #LearnLAP
I think this passion/genuis hour is fantastic. This doesn't happen in New Zealand but I'm personally interested in finding out wha the students know and learning from them and students learn from each other. In NZ, this is called AKO.

Q2: I read “What Do You With an Idea” by Kobi Yamada - for my Ss they needed to see the Genius Hour process from start to finish to really understand it. Once our first GH was complete, my Ss were hooked and sad they needed to wait an entire week for our next session!! #learnLAP
A3 We are going to have an amazing makerspace at our school so the community partners that help supply that space will be my go to options. Can’t wait for it to be open. #LearnLAP

A3:form a great relationship with your LMS. Ss can learn true research from Them. Ss also will see adults collaborating, modeling expectations. Conversation & feedback Protocols, rubrics created by Ss, Peer feedback, revision process #learnlap
A3 technology helps because you can get a lot online. I also have built a pretty extensive classroom library over the years which is where we start. I’m trying to gather more materials for ss to make models with as they explore their ideas. #LearnLAP
A3 I am currently reading @ajjuliani new book PBL. It contains lots of tips, ideas and Check In rubrics to facilitate these projects with regular check ins and conference opportunities #LearnLAP

A3: My ideas are a hodgepodge if random ideas I’ve found pt on a a google doc. It’s my first year so it’s sooooo disorganized. But weeks 1 and 2 went so awesomely well. #learnlap
A3. Materials used in a makerspace, creativity, designing, making, experimenting, building, engineering, finding out how something works, a process, books in a library used for research projects, finding interests! #learnlap
Q3:Wonderopolis could be a great model to show how a broad question can be examined. Getting to know how to really use a library and experts around you are the best resources I’ve found. #LearnLAP

A3 Google for Edu @GoogleForEdu Apps have been great at helping Ss collaborate, stay organized, and build portfolios...they can also connect with anyone all over the world...the scope of their passions becomes unlimited #LearnLAP
A3: My go-to is my students. I go to them. What do they want to learn? How? Then, I go to my drawing board and set up certain pieces for them. #learnlap
Their classmates, lots of apps, teaching them to start with a deep question
#LearnLAP
Sorry I'm so slow tonight, internet keeps cutting out and then it is several minutes trying to get it back up. UGH
I don't really have too many go to resources for GH since the Ss are all working on different things. I do have something that they have to think about everyday before they get started - set a goal and then a small thing to reflect on before the finish up for the day. #LearnLAP
A4) Organized Chaos! Everyone is all over the place, BUT they are ALL productively working. I usually walk around to meet with each group or student to checkin. I also conference and help students plan out their projects when needed. #LearnLAP#GeniusHour
A4: collaborative groups and independent work ALL over the classroom. really trying to have students feel comfortable about where they work and allow them the freedom to work at their pace. #learnLAP#geniushour
A4 Time set aside weekly to work on a relevant product to the subject and free time to work. As an instructor I would set up check in times and systems to set goals for the product. #LearnLAP
A4 - Check out @trello! (Here's last year's board): https://t.co/XBGIeptsSU We use their website to plan out our steps (improving our Executive Function skills) and share projects with one another. Some of the advanced features would be awesome for older kiddos!!!
#LearnLAP
A4: #LearnLAP Learning is messy, right? Organised chaos sounds about right. haha. But I think if done well, it'll also look like a place people would want to go to and learn.

A4 ss are all busy working on their research. Sharing ideas or new understandings, working together to conduct research or create their presentations. It’s amazing how much ss can do when you step back and let them learn and do. #learnlap
From the ideas from everyone else, I think I would start my own project and share with the class. I could also involve them. It would be writing stories so they can critique me and give me ideas. then they can start on their own project, whatever it is. #LearnLAP
A4 In the classroom GH becomes an hour that is honored and kept in place so that each week it becomes a dessert, the ice cream for the week. Every Friday, after Lunch - it became a weekly tradition in my classroom.
Yes! This is always my starting point. Then I pull resources too to aid in their research! It lets them know I am interested in their passions as well! #LearnLAP
A4:some days are messy, some days are fun, some do overs, some celebrations, some just grind work. another reason why people must see process over product. The final day is most often amazing, but the journey is always more fun than the destination itself. #LearnLAP
A4. Organized chaos where all Ss are working, but on different things throughout the room! Each Ss has a purpose with a with a goal in mind! Reflecting, sharing ideas, collaborating, etc. #learnlap
A3 After finalizing ideas with Ss we send out an email to all Ts in the school/district inviting them to come in and share. We also send a message to the community asking for support. We build a digital library and our librarian is a huge resource as well. #LearnLAP
A5) Lucky Genius Hour fits easily into our schedule. Each week we have a block of time for STEM. I utilize this time for Genius Hour. I also have a 30min block of time each afternoon that students can use for enrichment while I pull students for remediation. #LearnLAP#GeniusHour
A3: We have an online database for public educators and students in North Carolina called NCWiseOwl - definitely a go-to resource for us! I also love Wonderopolis! #learnlap

#LearnLAP
We start the first day of school by stressing teamwork, shared learning, growth mindset and perseverance. It is really important to share examples of students from all over the world who are following their passions to make the world awesome.#LearnLAP
A5) I'm dying for someone to give me the magic answer to this one. I feel like our schedule is so CRAMMED already...I've been wanting to add GH but can't seem to find a spot! :-( #LearnLAP
A5: Schedule is always a worry but we don't find time, we make time for things that are important. Getting kids working on their passions and thinking in bigger terms is important! #LearnLAP
A5: #GeniusHour is a perfect way to kick off the day's learning as morning work. Get them pumped about being there on time by giving them time to explore their own interests. #learnlap
A5: We do Passion Time 2x/week for 45 minutes all year long. It gets priority & all the kids are in the room when it happens. I have to work extra hard to fit everything else in, so I integrate subjects, eliminate fluff, plan w/the end in mind & maximize time-on-task!
#LearnLAP
A5: Our schedule is packed with academic time but #geniushour would fit really well into our 'extension' period. This is the last 45min of every day where we have our HR Ss but I worry some Ss will miss out who need extra academic help or go to choir/band practice #LearnLAP
I only have 47 minutes 4 days a week and 35 on the 5th day to get all the curriculum in, so I do 10 min per week, with extra time if we have been efficient on any given day or week
#learnlap
A5 we try to find as many minutes as we can. I explain to the ss that if we use our time efficiently to get done all the work we have to do then there is time for our own projects. I’ve never had such quick and quiet transitions because every minute we save they get #learnlap
A5: #LearnLAP
It'll be difficult. It'll need to be prioritised which can be difficult. so many other things to do. But I think this is essential because it's for the students. Would it be possible to do genius hour more than once a week? It feels too short for me.
A3: immediate things that come to mind are @TED_ED@TEDTalks@TheCrashCourse , my own videos, and using tech to connect Ss to my own connections in the field. #LearnLAP
If you've read "Learn Like a PIRATE" and want to connect with other teachers at your grade level, add your name to the #LearnLAP PLN here: https://t.co/yqOsvPp2kv It's a great way to collaborate with others trying to do similar things in their classroom!
A5:I don’t have a predictable time allotted for this. +\- for this. Based on what the Ss need, I am flexible with sched. More or less time as needed #LearnLAP
A5) I do it every Wed in my @AVID4College elective. They may not like it since it doesn't check their cert boxes but oh well, I work for my kids, not them. #learnlap
A5: Schedule is always a worry but we don't find time, we make time for things that are important. Getting kids working on their passions and thinking in bigger terms is important! #LearnLAP
Late last year @BetsyDeVosED said 65% of jobs kindergarten children would have, had not been invented yet. Mysteriously that number has increased to 85 percent of the jobs by 2030 have not been invented yet, according to her latest speech. https://t.co/k2nSzhKBPZ
When I squeezed it in my first year, everything crowded it out, and many things got in the way, including principals that didn't understand, sometimes even assemblies or field trips - it was a challenge to carve out the time.
Was it worth it?
Priceless!!!!!
#LearnLAP
A5. Morning work is a great way to fit it into the schedule. Allowing time first thing in the morning for creativity and reflection is a great way to set the tone for the day!
A5 I have just found the time to do it. I want to expose my Ss, especially the ones who don’t think they love learning, and prove to them that they really do. #LearnLAP
A5: When they are doing something THEY will find the time and motivation to put their all in it. I can’t even stop them from working on it in their free time and at home. They are invested. #LearnLAP
Hey #learnlap friends - gotta duck out a few minutes early to get the kiddos in bed. Thanks for an awesome conversation on #GeniusHour! @Mrs_H5th is rocking it tonight!
I gets the started without being overwhelmed and I don't get so much push back on "teaching curriculum bell to bell" I also have students tie it to "science"
#learnlap
A6: Although my students are free to do some pretty crazy projects, they all follow a formal procedure in order to ensure that the time is spent wisely & children are improving their skills through each round. Here are our steps: https://t.co/42lWMEHaxG (See image too)
#LearnLAP
A5: When they are doing something THEY will find the time and motivation to put their all in it. I can’t even stop them from working on it in their free time and at home. They are invested. #LearnLAP
I think it can be whatever works best for you and your kids! I have a 40 min period once a week. But I also can use 30min at the end of each day for "enrichment." However, I also pull students for remediation during that time. #LearnLAP
A4: I am still putting this together in my head but it seems to be coming together. Wonder Walls, Maker Spaces, Collaborative Design. So much good stuff! #LearnLAP
I always had a reminder of the basic structure. A review of the current direction or assignment. A 1-on-1 walk around and see how projects were going. And we always had the present their work part. #LearnLAP
Guarantee 10 minutes per week, but if doing well, give more time. Increase time as students get more into their projects. It helps them stay more on task during class, so we save class time, and thus have more time for GH
#learnlap
The only real structure is for the kids to share a project proposal with the class for feedback, research, turn what they learn into a final project, and share it with the world. Otherwise I like to get out of the way and watch the magic! #LearnLAP
A7) I have used a rubric that focuses on students developing their soft skills as they work/present their projects. I'd love some ideas on how to best approach evaluating as a feedback tool. #LearnLAP#GeniusHour
I think as you conference with groups and students you can help make connections to the curriculum, but let students start with their interests and passions. #LearnLAP
A6. Have some structured open ended questions to seek information about topic for Ss to research. What do they wnat to do to show the project? Their final presentation , a powerpoint, video, etc. #learnlap
A6: I think the basic structure of making sure Ss check in with you & are responsible for their space/project is the most structure #geniushour needs...Ss should be free to do what they need to in this (un)structured time, right? #LearnLAP
A5: I can make it a specific part of every day, build portfolio check in activities into the class @Seesaw portfolios, and I want to work time into my own schedule for a Passion Time that lets me work on my book draft each day. So many ideas exploding in my head. #learnLAP
I structure this time with a rubric and deadlines. since i teach high schoolers, it's much easier to allow them the time with me as a reminder to get work done.
#LearnLAP
I always recommend having a tab open to the moderator's Twitter feed (or a column in TweetDeck) to follow their questions. Otherwise, it can be tough to keep up with each question! :)

A7 - No grade on their work, but we give feedback and applaud whatever they present. Sometimes a suggestion to investigate further brings a deeper project. the next time. #LearnLAP
A6Originally we did it on Fri’s for 1 hr. We found many Ss didn’t remember what they had learned from week to week so now we do a full Genius Week. Every day set a goal & reflect on it at the end of class on Twitter. End of wk they have to teach their skill to a peer. #LearnLAP
A7 - For me, success is measured in several ways:
(1) Are students becoming more self-directed when it comes to personal interests?
(2) Are students allowing their natural curiosity to be explored?
(3) Are students' improving skills that they &/or I value?
#LearnLAP
Agreed. I was more speaking about time than the connection though. If passion time/genius hour is piled on top of an already jam packed classroom block, I wonder if kids lose steam. The alternative is to cut out some curriculum for this time #LearnLAP
A7 no grade just reflection 😃What did you set out to learn, how did you go about learning it, how did it go, what would you do differently next time? #LearnLAP
A5: I can make it a specific part of every day, build portfolio check in activities into the class @Seesaw portfolios, and I want to work time into my own schedule for a Passion Time that lets me work on my book draft each day. So many ideas exploding in my head. #learnLAP
A7: Truly I think this can be done by have set clear objectives from the course, the group objectives the class sets for expected outcomes of research and learning, and then evaluating if Ss can show measurable learning and/or solutions. #LearnLAP

A7 Before we begin I ask Ss to complete a self reflection sheet rating themselves on independence, asking self motivating questions, documentation. At the end they revisit the sheet. We also write a narrative for each S. #LearnLAP
A8) I absolutely LOVE Genius Hour because it put students in the driver seat from the get go! I also love that it empowers students to find their voice and reflect on their dreams! Its an added bonus that it reinforces those research, writing, and revising skills! #LearnLAP
My students get to be as creative as they can and teach each other and they adore it. I also use this method as a "workshop" right before ACT to have students teach others with their strengths. #LearnLAP
General rubric, focus on learning, soft skills, critical thinking etc
#LearnLAP
I tread lightly on grading for GH because it is student passion come to life, and I don't want to make it "work" for a grade. They have enough of that already.
A8 - Passion Time is the perfect medium for students to spend time working independently on things that require multiple steps, self-direction, problem-solving, time management, etc. The teacher spends the time giving feedback, so the students help & direct each other. #LearnLAP
A4: I let them really own our room with where and how they wanted to work. Sometimes alone, sometimes together. It all depends on the day and part of the process they were on. But no matter what, they were always engaged & deeply into getting to their next goal. ❤️ #LearnLAP
A8 It brings out the quiet ones, and they all have a chance to showcase their passions. ALL have a chance to shine. Which then leads into their confidence levels and their work. It becomes apart of their life skills. #LearnLAP
A7: Truly I think this can be done by have set clear objectives from the course, the group objectives the class sets for expected outcomes of research and learning, and then evaluating if Ss can show measurable learning and/or solutions. #LearnLAP
A8 Genius Hour allows us to model that every member of our learning community has the ability to help another person. We are all guides. We have certain skill sets BUT we all must keep learning, asking questions. #LearnLAP
