Sam Wallace, 2nd year Social Studies teacher from WI. I'm still looking forward to collaborating w/ @BrookeEisenbach and her Ss on something; i don't know what yet but I wanna do something with those awesome pre service Ts! #waledchat
A1: Hands down, getting to have a Google Hangout with @MrPStrunk. Best conversation that I had all month. Thankful to call him a friend and brother. He is the teacher that I aspire to be. #waledchat
A1: Probably seeing a HUGE turnaround in one of my students. He has been so active in participating in class since I showed the class sketchnoting. I think he was glad to see that I was trying to find new ways to appeal to him and others in class. #waledchat
A1: Many of my Algebra kids have been struggling with the difficult content, but their latest benchmark scores were actually higher than previous years! #win#waledchat
A1: My biggest win of this month has been participating in my internship at the local middle school and having my first experience in a classroom! #waledchat
A1 My biggest win of this month has been getting my friends @newsela to let me pilot the Power Words feature of Newsela Pro. Funds are difficult to come by in the district.
#waledchat
A1 My biggest win from the past month would probably be the breakthrough I had with one of my students! We didn't have a great connection because she joined our class late but I really feel like I've gotten through to her! #waledchat
A1: My biggest wins came in helping others, from technology to being someone to talk to. The feeling of knowing I helped someone is nearly impossible to top.
#waledchat
A1 Receiving notice that I am going to be the head boy's and girl's track coach @NewHolsteinSD this spring! Nervous & incredibly excited and honored! #waledchat
A1:
My biggest win has been getting a small class of 13 that was not all that excited to be in drama, to perform, have fun, excel at the week’s skills! What a turn around! #waledchat
A1 biggest win came this past weekend when I took some Ss to the @NationalHistory Day competition for the first time. My first time leading, their 1st time making projects. We all learned a lot and we had some great breakdowns on what to improve for next year! #waledchat
A1: My biggest win was getting an email from a student who said "plus I think you would be a great teacher! I know I would want to be in your class! Keep up the great teaching!" #waledchat
A1: Integrating GrammarFlip and BrainPop quizzes/movies into the classroom. Also, a huge win is our school as a collective. We have some pretty awesome teachers trying and implementing incredible teaching strategies. #waledchat#HospLearns
#waledchat A1: Ss using free period to come to my classroom and re-assess on previously "failed" content. They put in the work, they get FULL credit. Also: Seeing my name in a new published Stats text and getting invited to join CB AP Stats Instructional Design Team. GREAT DAY!
A1: My biggest win from the month is seeing the progress my students are making in reading! They have made some huge jumps in using decoding skills. #waledchat
A1: my biggest win was to learn and hopefully have mastered the hp reveal app for implementing an augmented reality. Using it next week so we will have to stay tuned to see how the students enjoy it! #waledchat
A1 My biggest win was having a student who I worked with 1 on 1 two years ago to help with some assistive tech come up and say hi to me and ask how I was doing....at the movie theater. #waledchat
A1) I also received news that I was nominated for the student recognition of excellence award at my university and received notice of two districts who would like to interview me. #waledchat
A1.2: Having a S come up to me and ask for some extra practice because he noticed on his tracking data sheet that he is struggling with context clues. It's amazing the ownership my kids are showing! #waledchat
A1: My biggest win was getting a group of students who typically aren’t very motivated to write a text dependent analysis. They did a great job! #waledchat
A1: My biggest win is successfully thinking on my toes. I've had to change things up often and quickly for a kiddo and it's working out well. #waledchat
A2: It was my 1st time doing this writing project, but I really liked it and saw the Ss being successful. It took away the scary part of an "essay," but still left all of the required elements, but just in a different way #waledchat
A1: It’ll have to be reaching a student that I hadn’t really connected with. I take pride in my connections with students, and always love to find a way to create a bond with different students. #waledchat
A2 This will give me the opportunity to help my Els to improve their vocabulary acquisition. The more vocab they have the easier it will be for them to communicate.
#waledchat
#waledchat A1 Being fortunate to have John Stamos visit with our History of Rock and Roll class. Also, being able to visit with students in France and Denmark.
#waledchat A1 One of my goals is to create Ss who want to learn INTRINSICALLY. I send out positive e-mails to my parents at the end of each 6 weeks. This email exchange is a HUGE TESTIMONY to how I teach.
A1: My biggest win was getting a group of students who typically aren’t very motivated to write a text dependent analysis. They did a great job! #waledchat
A2: It serves as a continual reminder that every group of students is different and constant reflection and adjustment needs to be made to instructional practices to ensure student success #waledchat
A2: @MrPStrunk is a passionate and dedicated teacher that has vision for where he wants his students to be. It's easy to feel defeated in the middle of a difficult season, but finding him and being encouraged by what he is doing gives me the strength to keep fighting. #waledchat
A2: Even in the past month, I have used this positive success to continue to find more ways like this to appeal to my students. I even used sketchnotes as a pre-assessment for WW2. #waledchat
A2: My experience at #ICE18 has inspired me to continue taking risks and putting myself out there, instead of always lurking in the background. I have more to offer and need to be confident in that! #waledchat
A2: This strengthened my relationship with these Ss and showed them that I cared enough about them to spend free time to teach them something 1:1. #waledchat
A1: Biggest Win this past month - making some great connections with students I have not had too many opportunities to work with in the past #waledchat
A2: It's important to celebrate victories because as we improve our craft, failure is bound to happen. Recognizing and appreciating the victories within our classrooms and school is crucial. #waledchat
A2: This experience has made me see what kind of person I want to be in a school setting. My SP has been amazing and been showing many different tools to manage and engage in a classroom! #waledchat
A2. When you put effort into being there for your kids, you are build a relationship of positive rapport and community. They need that. You need that. Embrace it! #waledchat
A2: I’m constantly trying to stay up with relevant techniques and technology that create meaningful learning experiences for my students. I hope that lessons such as the one I’m planning does just that! #waledchat
A2 It will allow me to continue building relationships w/ students that I already have in class but also those that I don't get to see in the classroom. Students get to see the athlete & competitor side of me & we can learn & grow together on the track! #waledchat
A2: My 'Why" is being committed lifelong learning in pursuit of my goals and achieving fulfillment through helping others work towards their dreams. This influences everything I do.
#waledchat
A2 Gotta keep innovating and learning. Went to a Teaching Inquiry workshop today to refine my practice. Working on a NL Project that I hope kids will like #waledchat
A1: Moving an half my direct instruction online. Flipped classroom, naerly access anywhere with wifi. Excited to diversify certian units in 7th & 8th. Tighten up the technical stuff & logistics, broade. the content #waledchat
A1: Sorry I’m late! Biggest win was getting to attend #ICE18 with staff and seeing the great presenting and networking of @_on11 and @megan_hacholski#waledchat
#waledchat A2: Having Ss succeed, especially after prior struggle and responding to feedback....is the most validating experience I have as a T. It means Ss are learning how to learn from mistakes.....and that they CARE to. For me? It means keep right on keepin' on.
A1: Stepping up my lesson game and having Ss react so amazingly to it! Just seeing their faces light up and random kids coming in and talking to me about my class. #waledchat
#waledchat A2 Moving forward, continuing to reach out to the icons of history to bring new perspectives to our students. Also, to continue to expose all our Ss to classes through out the US and world.
A2 as an educator, I feel like this win will inspire to reach out even more. I have many students that don't have someone in their home life who is there all time, and I want to be someone my kids can count on #waledchat
A2: our win with @Flipgrid is giving students voice that was kind of hidden. I am able to share with colleagues and get others to try it as well. #waledchat
A2: I’ll continue to believe that you can connect with students, even if you think you may have nothing in common. It only takes one little thing to spark a connection. #waledchat
A2: I am not totally sure, but I know I am gaining more and more confidence to take more risks in my "new" position. Risks are expanding my audience and opportunities. #waledchat
It made me realize the importance of the "E's" ....efficiency, excitement, engagement, and empowering students in the classroom and throughout the school. #waledchat
A2 I have learned that Ss will take control when given the power and support. This is something I am working to improve, the balance between freedom of choice and support. #waledchat
A1 - Being contacted by @IESResearch and invited to be on a panel with 14 others from around the US to discuss “Neuroeducation: Neuromyths, Neurotruths, Student Learning, and Teachers’ Understanding.” Super excited is an understatement. #waledchat
A2: Never going back to boring old lessons. Always going to strive for what’s next and how I can amp up even the most boring standards. Demonstrating to other Ts how great it can be! #waledchat
A1&2 😜 Biggest win was challenging kids to create and present arguments to show to class, parents, and principal. No grades, just an authentic project, packed with choice, and a real audience... “ding ding ding!!!” Here goes all the authentic audience I can create! #waledchat
A3: My Encore class literature circles and alternative projects for the novel Fever were just average. I could have forced the issue more, but it's not a regular Core class so I decided not to push it since they have so many other things to worry about it. #waledchat
A2:
I will tuck this away, so the next time I/we hit a rough patch, I will hopefully remember how good it feels when we reach the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. #waledchat
A2 This win reinforces that relationships are the key to everything. They might not remember everything you said but they'll always remember how you made them feel. #waledchat
A2) This win influences me as an educator because it helps me focus on those students who need me the most. As a student teacher, I oftentimes feel like I do not make a difference, but that one email reaffirmed that I do. She is the reason I love teaching. #waledchat
I coach as well, and have found that forming the coach/player relationship is amazing. You see a whole other side of the kids, and it’s awesome. Some of my favorite memories are on the field with my kids! #waledchat
A3: Having multiple preps is difficult at times and there were some lessons that I just reused from last year. There were changes I wanted to make - just didn't have the time. #waledchat
A3: I think that every Tt can look back at a lesson and realize that they could have done something more. The critical point is to note where you came up short and to make improvements for next time. #waledchat
A3: I was not in love with my lesson that I did for Pearl Harbor this week. After having students do a reading, I had them do a history story map of it. It was okay, but I know there has to be a better way to teach this. #waledchat
A3: I chose to have lunch by myself and relax instead of spending that time with a student who needed me more than I realized. She approached me again today, and I felt horrible. We'll be having lunch together today and I hope that I can be what she needs. #waledchat
A2: I am looking forward to having a solid launch pad for great content and #studentchoice. #TechEd and #makered is about process, and this win lets me refine my craft even more. #waledchat
Q1: I presented at 2 different conferences in the past 2 weeks. One was a research conference and the other was a technology conference. Im actually at the tech conference right now p, on my wedding anniversary. I miss my wife. #waledchat
#waledchat Another great win was our conversation with a Grade 3 Class in Israel. When done, we shared our Pledge, they sang the Israel National Anthem. Wonderful learning experience!
A3 I taught a Civics lesson last week that I definitely settled for; I'm not proud of it, but I appreciate the ability to reflect on it, thank you! #waledchat
A3: Honestly, my reaction to a situation that arose was average. I took a situation too personally, when I shouldn't have. The conversation could have been great (or greater) had I put my personal feelings aside. #waledchat
A1: From a professional standpoint, it was definitely serving in the role as leadership coach w/current principals who are still in the buildings & wanting to continue to grow as leaders. #waledchat
A3 The week before February vacation was tough. It seemed the world was out to get me. I let it get the best of me and just survived the week. #waledchat
A3 I won't lie, in the past month I had a lesson plan that was especially average. As a student teacher there is so much time an energy being put into everything I accepted average when I should have stepped up my lesson plan game #waledchat
A2: I would like to encourage more staff to build their PLN and hopefully encourage more to present. It’s so great to share the great things that are happening in classrooms. #waledchat
A3: Really any lesson I do I feel could be better. Every meeting could run a bit better. If didn't believe this, I wouldn't be driven to learn and grow each day.
#waledchat
A2-The @ronclarkacademy made me realize the importance of the "E's" ....efficiency, excitement, engagement, and empowering students in the classroom and throughout the school. #waledchat
A3) I feel like, as a student teacher, I have days where I am trying to get by, and I am not okay with that. I feel like I fall short, but I also know that I am giving my all. I feel like I need to be anything but average, but that is sometimes easier said than done. #waledchat
A3 one of my classes was very negative about one of my lessons because they "just wanted a packet" and I gave in to them. Not my finest moment. #waledchat
A3: I was not in love with my lesson that I did for Pearl Harbor this week. After having students do a reading, I had them do a history story map of it. It was okay, but I know there has to be a better way to teach this. #waledchat
A3: I felt as though I could have given better feedback to some of the students on their short stories. It was my first week in the classroom and felt a little uncomfortable and just felt as though I could have done better. #waledchat
A3: I can't think of a specific example but I know that this time of year is peak burnout time for me. The average moments slip out when exhaustion sets in...and have to work hard to stop that from happening! #waledchat
A2. We never know who we will influence. Now I want to be more of a mentor AND teacher. It's about relationships. Get to know your kids. YOU MATTER. #waledchat
A3: This latest augmented reality project. I pushed students to focus too much on artwork which took time away from the technology. Project gallery walk is tomorrow - hoping for great things #waledchat
A3 one of my classes was very negative about one of my lessons because they "just wanted a packet" and I gave in to them. Not my finest moment. #waledchat
A3 my best event from Q1 started out feeling like an average thing. I didn't feel like I had prepared my Ss, but in the end it was the learning process, growth, and new ideas that sprang from that that my Ss appreciated the most! #waledchat
A2:
I may have talked about this before, but my Playbill project where students rested a playbill for a play written about their lives. It became a gargantuan thing that hung over our heads. I pulled the plug, and said turn in what you have. #waledchat
A3: I think my students have been relying on my help more than pushing themselves to learn the content themselves. I felt I should have asked them to ask me a more specific question and guided them to find the answer on their own. #waledchat
A4: I felt like it was my fault at first because I should have made my expectations more clear, but sometimes I think Ss want to be "average." I demand a lot from them during our Core ELA class, so there needs to be a little bit of leeway sometimes. #waledchat
That's a great win, Jimmy! I've been loving #culturize and I am sure that educators around you are loving to glean as much from you as possible! #waledchat@ERobbPrincipal
In reply to
@casas_jimmy, @mwaysrms, @ERobbPrincipal
A3: I find myself settling for average when others, both Ss and other Ts, don't take an interest in enrichment opportunities I bring forward despite my energy and excitement. I detest the feeling of setting for average. #waledchat
A3: I spent so much time focusing on my teaching geometric mean better that I felt like I didn’t worry about my special right triangles lessons too much and my students just had a quiz and I feel like I should’ve approached the lessons differently. #waledchat
A3: an AP CSP 1-pager my Ss wrote. I was tired of giving feedback and not seeing changes happen. The writing was substandard as a result. Not my best moment. #waledchat
I’m always intrigued by how educators are consumed w/guilt b/c they can’t be everything to everybody. It’s okay to say no to some things & not feel guilty. Give yourself permission. #waledchat
A3. Way too many. Between weather and sickness it has been easy to just phone it in (and I have). My band sounds great DESPITE me sometimes. #waledchat
Susan, I know for a fact you are anything but average. Your kids appreciate all the hard work you put into your lessons, and I can see the commitment you have to them. Keep up the good work!
A4: NO! If we aim to be above average every day, we will burn out so fast. It's more than okay to have average days - it's almost necessary for survival. #waledchat
A4: I remember what my cooperating T told me once, "Not everything has to be a 'knock it out of the park' lesson. Kids have be OK with you not always being 'on'." Always being on a high will wear off quickly. Loud teaching loses its luster quickly. #waledchat
A4: I think as we try new things and get used to them they become "average." I think it is okay to have average days from time to time because they challenge you to think differently and be more innovative next time. We should not live there though, strive for great! #waledchat
A4: Definitely nothing wrong with having an average or even bad day - the important part is learning from the experience and looking for ways to improve in the future. #waledchat
#waledchat A3: brunch with my son a couple of weeks ago. I settled for a burger when I could have had a Cuban.
Also, bought Maker's Mark when Angel's Envy was available for a few bucks more. Not all Old Fashioned's are created equal.
Q3: Its only settling if you accept it. We all have average days. But the difference bewtween great and good is one of focus and practice. That being said, I had some serious tech challenges knock me on my tail this week. Next week will improve. #waledchat
A4 Let's face it, everyday can't be an allstar-pull out all the stops days. Even in a Michael Bay movie, the action has to stop sometimes. Some days even my Ss appreciate a slow, quiet work day. #waledchat
A4: I would not say there is anything wrong with "average days" because sometimes routines are helpful, but I think it is important to switch it up to keep students interested! #waledchat
A3: I teach an intensive reading class and I hadn’t been giving those Ss my all. I was doing bare minimum and not making lessons engaging. Pouring myself into ELA, but I have improved and realized IR kids deserve it too! #waledchat
Q4 I think that depends on what your idea of average is! While I don't think an average day has to be bad, you want to do your best for your kids #waledchat
A4: Although we all want to strive for excellence, I think nothing is wrong with average days. We all have them. Sometimes, other things consume us, and our home lives suffer. It is hard to create an engaging lesson every single day no matter how much we want to. #waledchat
A4: Average days are just as important as rainy days. We need them, yes, to grow. Many would agree, however, that their most important purpose is helping us to remember just how wonderful the days of sunshine feels. #waledchat
A3: I had students show a Washington precedent using legos and I felt like I got a lot of obvious "cabinet" creations. I should have pushed the Ss to create a variety of precedents. #waledchat
A4: I suppose it depends how you look at average. If a person is settling for average when they know their potential is much higher...that's a problem. #waledchat
A4: I remember what my cooperating T told me once, "Not everything has to be a 'knock it out of the park' lesson. Kids have be OK with you not always being 'on'." Always being on a high will wear off quickly. Loud teaching loses its luster quickly. #waledchat
#waledchat A4 You need to be realistic. You will have bad days, average days, and great days. If you make your job ABOUT THE KIDS, each day will result in #JOY
A4: i set the bar high for myself and Ss. If the day is ‘average’, I ask ‘what could i do better?’ ‘Were they engaged?’ ‘What learning happened?’ #waledchat
A4: I think if we know we gave it our all and the lesson went well, then there’s nothing wrong with that, but if we know it could have been better or are wishing that it was better throughout then we should make the change! #waledchat
#waledchat A4: Days are like people.....more than half the ones I experience are below average. By definition. :)
The question is: How GOOD is your "average?"
A4: We are human and we make mistakes or we don't always have the energy to make something over the top. Average days are okay. When the average days outweigh the great days, we should start to be concerned. #waledchat
A4) As a student teacher, I strive to be more than average. I want to give my all for my students and #betheone for my kids, but I also feel like juggling full responsibilities can be daunting. Those kids need me more than what I am pre-occupied with. #waledchat
A4 Lesson planning should be like a piece of beautiful music, high and low points. variation in tempo and pace. All ending in a beautiful crescendo #waledchat
A4: Absolutely nothing wrong with an average day. You’ll exhaust yourself if you are on constant overdrive. Kids need consistency and they may lose that if you are on a rollercoaster of being spectacular and then exhaustion. #waledchat
#waledchat A4: Days are like people.....more than half the ones I experience are below average. By definition. :)
The question is: How GOOD is your "average?"
A4.2: I work with a lot of students, who despite being extremely strong academically, settle for average for a number of reasons (some I am learning from @debdouglas52). I have to learn to better identify the settlers and help them rise up. #waledchat
A4:
The perfectionist in me scoffs at average. But my inner teacher says that average is ok as long as it comes with reflection and not complacency. I’ll be honest, during performance weeks for productions, my classes don’t often get more than average. #waledchat
A5: Looking forward to incorporating some new pieces of instruction with my lower level kids. Trying to increase engagement and make the learning more personalized. Hoping to get good feedback! #waledchat
A5: Unrelated to school, but I am excited to travel to San Antonio at the end of the month to see my nieces and nephews. Actually, I may go visit my niece's STEM school while I'm there! #waledchat
A5: For our WW2 assessment I have an awesome Choice Menu where students stay 3 nights at Hotel del Strunk and eat at Cafe del Strunk where they have 3 entrees and get to choose the sides (all of which are different activities based on what we learned). PUMPED! #waledchat
A5: I just setup 2 @SkypeClassroom Mystery Skypes about an hour ago. Looking forward to connecting with @alberto_hrv and his students both in English and Spanish.
#waledchat
A5) This month, I plan to continue to apply for teaching positions and hopefully obtain an offer. I am excited to make my lifelong dream a reality, and although student teaching can be a roller coaster, I am well prepared and know that I can push through. #waledchat
It can be so frustrating when they can’t get the answer and you’re ready to say the next thing! Patience is key, we’ll be able to cover what we need to. It’s more important that they discover it themselves. #waledchat
A5: We are starting The Dust Bowl DBQ next week. I absolutely LOVE teaching it. It's neat to see Ss reaction to the boom of Texas with oil and cattle, then to see it fail, then to see it succeed again. Talk about incorporating soft skills! Perseverance at its finest. #waledchat
A4: If you mean "average" by just a free day of letting the students just talk with their friends -- YES!
If you mean average as in, a vocab worksheet every now and then- I get it. Sometimes the reteach needs to happen.
But always try to add sparkle. #waledchat
#waledchat In March I will be signing the publication contract to my book. My goal in life is to spread the message of #AlwaysBelieve My book will reach an international audience. #DreamComeTrue
#waledchat A5: Hiking more of the Appalachian Trail. Coaching my son's baseball team. Coaching 3 graduating seniors for their 4th year of pole-vault. Driving to Buffalo with my daughter to eat wings at Anchor Bar then driving back home. From Cleveland.
A5 Well something exciting in the upcoming month is the skatepark expo! My kiddos are building mini skate parks and they get to show them off to their parents and community! Another thing is I will be teaching a unit on India! My first Social Studies unit!!!!#waledchat
For the upcoming month, I'm continuing to have my Ss blog from the perspective of a Federalist or Democratic-Republican as they judge Washington's handling of the Whiskey Rebellion or Adams's handling of the Alien/Sedition Act #waledchat
A5: Seamus the leprechaun showed up this morning and the kids were so motivated they were writing him letters during free play time. Leprechaun traps are in the plan books. #waledchat
Hey #waledchat faithful. I hope that you will consider joining me on Tuesday nights at 7pm EST for #fcpslearn. We will be spending the next few weeks focusing on the 5 C's.
A5 In Canada our Spring Break starts in a week so looking forward to that. Then I've put together a My Maps project across Canada mini research project #waledchat
Its a great question. Say yes to anything that is your passion & fills your heart w/joy. When you find yourself falling back to average & getting tired, weary & maybe even cranky, it’s time to say no. :) #waledchat
Hey #waledchat faithful. I hope that you will consider joining me on Tuesday nights at 7pm EST for #fcpslearn. We will be spending the next few weeks focusing on the 5 C's.
@makerfairenova will happen Mar 18th. I will be in the middle of it, buildimg and teaching and hanging with my maker buds for sooo many hours. Highlight of my social calendar. #waledchat
A5: I use @piktochart to make infographics on different women during Manifest Destiny. Students create very creative projects using technology. Awesome resource everyone should play with #waledchat
A5: I am excited on a lot of levels this month. I am traveling to see @IanAByrd and @gifted_guru at one of their Gifted Guild Gatherings. @debdouglas52is coming to do PD with my @deperems Ss and some Ts. TRACK STARTS MONDAY! #waledchat
A5: students will identify a section or sections that they struggled with the most and complete that indicated station’s problems. Using the hp reveal app students can scan the problem to see answers and resources such as a video of me going through the problem. #waledchat
