TNedchat is a way for educators in Tennessee to share thoughts, resources, and information. The weekly chat is moderated by Jessica Warner (@jessawarner) and Samantha Bates (@sjsbates).
Hello all, Julie from Chattanooga, TN back after a great fall break where I added a few personal days! Ready to learn with my #tnedchat friends tonight
@CurriculumAssoc I-Ready Math and Reading products have taught @WeAreBarfield teachers how to look at student data and intervene appropriately. It's given us a common language for discussing Math and ELA instruction. #tnedchat
Hello #TnEdChat. 4th and 5th grade teacher from Maine.
A1 Many local orgs and agencies have partnered with us to grow professional knowledge and partner with Ss.
We will be asking community members to come and share their story of immigrating to the US as we study immigration, past and present. The stories are powerful since they are real and from people we know. #TnEdChat
It was awesome to have Google Expedition AR experience at our school as well. I signed up and our kids and teachers had a wonderful experience. #tnedchat
Yeah. It's something that needs repair. Our district is working on norming the language that we use for math instruction in K-5. So important, when we consider student learning as a continuum. #tnedchat

A2 I believe our school shows the community that we want to invest in our city, its people, and the future. We graduate students that add value to our world #tnedchat
A1. I’m new there, but a group that promotes reading painted some beautiful murals in our school. Like walking through a story book. Love it! And fast break sponsored soccer uniforms. #TnEdChat
A2: I think it depends on the agency and their motives. We definitely want those community stakeholders that maybe future employers of our students. This is what grows our community. #tnedchat
A2 Connections from the outside help us model how to learn. We do not know it all. Connections from the outside build relationships and show our Ss that others care for them. #TnEdchat
A2: When partnering with outside agencies there needs to be a reciprocal relationship that is honored and upheld by hard work and followed through promises. #TnEdChat
TBH, I spent a couple days in Chattanooga over my fall break. It is really remarkable the level of creative and community-minded thinking you have going on down there. I'm glad you folks aren't taking it for granted. =) #tnedchat
A2 @HMSIndians is a Thriving culture in a great town. The kiddos will light your smile up everyday! A school looking for a breakout orbit opportunity. Just needs the right fuel :) #TnEdchat
A2: I think we have to define the word 'invest' also. Big and small companies throwing money at school's isn't always productive. Schools and stakeholders should have some clearly defined goals. Those TSIP plans should be part of the equation. #tnedchat
A2 I have always thought that investing in kids of all abilities is investing in the FUTURE TAXPAYERS of the community. Pay now or pay much more later. #TnEdChat
A3: Ask! 2 weeks ago we sat down with business leaders and asked what they wanted in future employees. Creating a culture of communication opens doors! #tnedchat
A3 Be your biggest cheerleader. Promote and Tell YOUR Story. Invite people in, create partnerships. This is an ACTIVE activity not passive waiting for it to drop in your lap. Build relationships, make connections, keep an open mind. #TnEdchat
A3: Districts should partner with their chambers of commerce and workforce development agencies to determine what the actual needs of a community are. Both parties need to listen to each other and determine the best course action. #tnedchat
A3 Sharing with the next generation and fostering a love of learning is enticing enough. Positive PR also helps. When outside agencies/artists/speakers come in we share contact info and links via blog. #TnEdChat
Not really. I do summer camps and meetings with our Chamber, but it's not really in service to my specific school. It's more based on the Chamber's workforce development goals. #tnedchat
a4: I think you have to make sure the goals of the outside agencies align with the curriculum goals of the school/district. If it doesn't, you ask them to realign or reconsider. Educators need to drive the bus. #tnedchat
A4. When outside influences come into play I think listening is important. But you have to gauge wether or not it’s right for your kiddos or role. Delicate dance sometimes. #tnedchat
A4 What's best for the kids? Driving question. Does the partnership create a #WIN for the kids? Does it promote their future with no reciprocal expectation that would interfere with academic time or promote products or services contrary to the ? Above. #TnEdchat
A4) Make sure the agency is helping not hurting. We are all there for the kids not your photo opp. It doesn't help to donate device that will take time and money to repair #TnEdChat
A4: IMO, Student data privacy is the most important looming issue of our time. This domain has nearly no regulation and potential for massively negative consequences. #Edtech companies and Silicon Valley have way to much latitude. Must. Raise. Awareness. #tnedchat
A4: Using MOUs "Memos of Understanding" to bring transparency and clarity between your school and the agency you are partnering with is a great start. It's a formal way to show that you are serious about the partnership you are about to embark on. #tnedchat
Troof. Donating your company's two-year old devices doesn't help us if they don't work on our network to ensure safety and security for our students. #tnedchat
A4: I screen all the noise by asking: 1) How can this enhance/transform learning experiences in a standards-specific, meaningful way? and 2) What's the motive? If it's exploiting educators to do your marketing research for free or to advertise your producet--forget it. #tnedchat
Learning spaces are now transactions. The taxpayer votes and [may] get a ROI, and the educator who was trained to inspire through the arts is now caught up in a scientific numbers game run and RUINED by politicians. #tnedchat

A5 Our goal is to enhance the S experience. Does a connection with an outside resource add to S learning and help us reach outcomes? Does it engage and empower Ss to continue exploring the topic? #TnEdChat

A5: Any grant is from an outsider...so things that I consider innovative I often reach outside of our budget to fund because it doesn't cause hardship on funding issues. My goals are always either ISTE standards or personalizing learning in general #tnedchat
Those that have a back end open to non-instructional related connections/ads/etc...
Those that aggregate data without deidentifying it.
Those that have clunky infrastructure, GUI, poor tech support. #tnedchat
A5: I think it’s important to teach environmental stewardship to my students. I partnered with a “green” cleaning brand to obtain organic cleaning products for my classroom. The company donated “go green” coloring books to my students. #TNedChat#JanitorialCutbacks
A5: If you're talking about third-party creators of my state's content, I'm skeptical. If you're talking about having experts skype or use #googlehangouts in the classroom to supplement learning with me, I'm all in. If you're all hype on the titles, I'm out. #tnedchat
A6. I’ve had “ outsiders” such as parents, district leaders, community helpers come to share their work with our kiddos. Or read to them. Typical pre-k stuff. Always a treat for them. #tnedchat
The current lack of regulations allow any #edtech company to share (or sell) student performance, usage, and private information data to any other party. Just like how Facebook does. #tnedchat
Follow the $$$$ or Fear the $$$$ #tnedchat
EduTech is one of the last untapped pots of Tax payer $$$ that does not have experts to focus on best interest. Note: the consequences are not a box of useless books/pamphlets but a intrusive exposure of student and teacher info

You have to overcome the bureaucracy and create opportunities that you see direct impact that inspires both you and and your students. Work around the system when need be, work the system when you can! #tnedchat
A5: Influencers that come and visit "live" or virtually provide such a great inspiration to young kids. Take your kids on an international school visit and let them experience differences and learn. Can't wait how virtual reality will change this experience! #TNEdChat

We’re going to do some virtual field trips using google street view now that I’ve got the tech tools to do this. Hope they are enriched by the experiences. #tnedchat
Are you an ambassador or "certified?" If your vendor's renewal rate is more frequent than @GoogleForEdu itself, then that's a problem. That's a very blatant conflict of interest on vendor vs educator and education. Think about that. Check your vendors. #gafe#GoogleCE#tnedchat
Insurance companies are now seeking Fitbit data. Imagine Linked in or ZipRecruiter having access to TCAP or other edtech data warehouses. Our current laws will completely allow this. #tnedchat

Q6. As usual, chatting leads to a “go for it” feeling. Thinking of what I could help my kiddos experience just by reaching out more. Experience in the world seems to aid learning. #tnedchat
Not sure where you are in your career, but give it at least 3 years. If, at the end of three years, you count more days that you hated than loved, then leave. There's NO in-between in education. Kids deserve educators who have their whole hearts. #tnedchathttps://t.co/2oOhWMHfar

I "visited" the neighborhoods where I grew up in Europe with Google Earth VR. It's pretty amazing. Didn't think I would be impressed, but I was blown away! #TNEdChat#Google#VR
A6: Not going to lie, I struggle with the student privacy issues but I also am concerned that if government gets hyper concerned we will have useless devices in our classrooms #tnedchat

I have a feeling we'll be talking student information systems and their benefits to students. Greg, my door is always open for true scholars! #TNEdChat
Not an issue of hating and issue of spinning wheels. We all know what we are supposed to do and what we are doing are two separate things. Schools/Edu needs to look different, mindsets need to change, red tape gets in the way every time. #tnedchat

I think the issue is instead of focusing on the perpetrators (BIG TECH) they lock down the schools. Bad actors make it tough on Schools. Often they are the same with the BIGGEST Displays :) #tnedchat
A6: This chat delivered in every way that I thought it would. Cuz my Nooga friends are awesome. And this @KyleHamstra knows how to drop a mic. I gotta up my twitter game. #tnedchat
