Good Evening!! Thank you for joining us tonight. I am Jaimie Carleo, Assistant Principal at York High School in Yorktown, VA. I am excited to chat with you all tonight about PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) #ycsdchat
Thank you for joining in on our chat tonight, please introduce yourselves and where you are from so we can all get to know one another a bit ☺ #ycsdchat
A1: I'll admit, my understanding is limited, but my interest is high. I feel like we are all just trying to get our feet wet with it at YES, but have high hopes for it's success for our students #ycsdchat
A1: At TMS we have a team that has developed a matrix of expectations. We have several posters placed around the school and each classroom. We are still working on some of the major components. #ycsdchat
I believe PBIS is a useful tool in keeping the focus on positive interventions. I love our PBIS team and it’s steps towards implementing strategies throughout this school year! #ycsdchat
A1--PBIS is about recognizing and catching "what goes right..." it's about acknowledging & rewarding the 95% of Ss doing the right thing and then providing positive interventions for those "not yets." #ycsdchat
A1: My understanding of PBIS is fairly basic. We use a matrix for our school-wide behavior plan, have students reflect on their behavioral choices, and attempt to allow for safe de-escalation of students before engaging with the students. #ycsdchat
A1: I am on the PBIS team at Tabb and am one of the leads for our Student Recognition as well. We’ve developed a great start to PBIS by practicing and posting our ROAR matrix and reviewing imthe different parts weekly with our Ss. #ycsdchat

A1: PBIS is about taking positive strides to positively affect students who may need behavioral interventions to be successful in school and in their larger roles in the school culture. #ycsdchat
A2: The benefits are that everyone gets to get on the same page. There is a clear system that everyone gets to follow. High expectations, consistency, and fidelity are all key ways to make sure everyone benefits! #ycsdchat
A1: Why PBIS? It gives the school consistency! Common language, common goals, common expectations. We are creating a path that is clear for all Falcons to walk down, this year and years to come. #YCSDchat#YHS
A1: My understanding of PBIS is not in depth as far as the formal research/terminology behind it but we have a matrix that we use at school and within the K classroom, we use a lot of the power of YET and positivity in Kindergarten. #ycsdchat
A2: I think the positive effects of PBIS would allow for students to become mindful of their behavior and more involved in their social and academic education. For teachers, it would allow for more effective and creative instruction #ycsdchat
A2: I agree that the main benefit I see is the common language and clear, common expectations. When having conversations we can easily point to those and reference them #ycsdchat
Q2: I think full implementation will bring about a culture shift in our school. It is cool to behave and be rewarded. Students will be happier. Staff will be happier. Everyone will WANT to be there! #ycsdchat
#ycsdchat A2: I agree with so many of you… Positive Relationships, a shared vision, buy-in …. these are all great benefits from an effective implementation of PBIS in schools!
It's about recognizing that you may have not achieved a goal or mastered a skill, but that doesn't mean you have failed. You keep trying because you haven't succeeded YET. It's important for students working on behavior goals. #growthmindset#ycsdchat
A2: When we’re all working towards the same goal, using the same language and expectations, and holding each other up and accountable, it’s clear that we’re all in this together! Success! #ycsdchat
A2: I agree that the main benefit I see is the common language and clear, common expectations. When having conversations we can easily point to those and reference them #ycsdchat
A2: Consistency of expectations as a building benefits the students as they know what to expect no matter where they are. Also focusing on what the students can do and creating goals reinforcing that frame of mind leads to a shift in behavior towards the positive. #ycsdchat
Roxana, YHS Social studies teacher, hoping on late.
A2: I think a big benefit of PBIS lies in the behavior matrix that our school puts out. Students struggle with learning how they should behave in certain environments, and the matrix serves as an excellent model. #ycsdchat
A3: Ensuring everyone is on board and focused on the common mission is sometimes challenging. It is helpful to be clear and explicit with our expectations both from staff and students. #ycsdchat
A3: There needs to be a meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders so that all are on the same page and see the value. So, a big obstacle is time. PBIS is not something that can be done a few minutes a day or week to start. It takes time to build fidelity! #ycsdchat
"Holding each other up and accountable" How do we develop that SHARED responsibility among students, classroom teachers, resource teachers, admin etc.? #ycsdchat
A2: When we’re all working towards the same goal, using the same language and expectations, and holding each other up and accountable, it’s clear that we’re all in this together! Success! #ycsdchat
Absolutely, expectations need to be clearly visible and explicitly communicated. I think all school personnel have responsibility in communicating and reinforcing the behavioral expectations as expectations are to be continued in hallways, cafeteria, school bus, etc. #ycsdchat
A3: I feel like consistency is an obstacle. In order to be consistent, I feel like we all need to have constant, meaningful discussions with the students about the specific expectations beyond saying our motto every morning. #ycsdchat
A3: I think a big obstaclewith PBIS is how young of a disciplinary/intervention model it is. Not a lot of educators have significant experience with it, and there are few federal laws that mandate specific documentation or interventions. #ycsdchat
A3: There needs to be a good honest try from everyone and not just I am going to try this for a week and if it doesn't work I give up. It takes time and patience. We have to believe in it ourselves otherwise how can we ask our students too. #ycsdchat
A3: too much emphasis on the “reward.” There’s plenty of evidence against it and how it quickly becomes counter productive. Keep it on the behavior #ycsdchat
A3 #ycsdchat Sometimes it can be hard to know whose behavior is classroom specific, and whose is emblematic of a larger problem. It’s not always the relationship with the teacher: ss with meds that wear off after lunch can be an issue, or a particular compilation of personalities
A3: too much emphasis on the “reward.” There’s plenty of evidence against it and how it quickly becomes counter productive. Keep it on the behavior #ycsdchat
A3--Fidelity of Implementation of PBIS, level of understanding of PBIS, Teacher and Ss buy-in, and consistency in the language-how personnel is implementing, having conversations, etc. around the expectations #ycsdchat
A3: But really, time is an obstacle. It takes time to build and implement a good #PBIS program . I think having leaders like @MattTayman and @JRC_Carleo is the first step. You must have leaders in place that keep the calendar, keep the team on track and hold the light #ycsdchat
It is important for us all to constantly remember our own “why” as reflective practitioners… in doing this it helps us all encourage one another! :) #ycsdchat
A4: A huge benefit to PBIS is that it’s almost the complete opposite of zero tolerance, a disciplinary policy that really hurts problem students. PBIS should target at-risk students and help manage their behavioral and academic problems before they become serious. #ycsdchat
A4: The framework provides a safe and positive environment. I think the relationships are built through student reflection of behavior with a staff member and discussing how they can make better choices next time. #ycsdchat
A4: PBIS is a school-wise “answer” to a lot of the questions or struggles teachers face. Why not tackle them together. Consistency for the win! #ycsdchat
Helps to remember to that when implementing PBIS for the first time there is quite a bit of trial and error as move toward everyone having same level of understanding and consistency-just may need to tweak some of the focus, communication, procedures along the way #ycsdchat
#ycsdchat A4: PBIS and the use of restorative practices can help teach students how to move forward positively and successfully, what the desired behaviors are, and educate Ss to change behaviors.
A4: I sincerely feel if we can start with our youngest Ss and continue through the upper grades w/ the PBIS mindset it will make a difference in rewiring their train of thought from I can't where we tend to get more of the behaviors to I can or there is a solution. #ycsdchat
I'm not familiar with Kickboard but I know many teachers use Class Dojo which helps with data collection. The 5 simple solutions at the end of this article seem very helpful The Behavior Battle: High- and Low-Tech Solutions https://t.co/fY7s0MT9U3#ycsdchat
A4: Using a "fishbowl" strategy and having students act out examples and non examples of behaviors has helped teach expectations. It helps them see what they look like when they are not meeting expectations and visualize what the behavior should look like. #ycsdchat
A5: At my previous school we used “Starbucks”. TMS is in the process of adopting Tiger Paws as tickets. There will be individual rewards and grade level rewards. I know there’s a lot of debate about incentives but I agree with this article. https://t.co/iypBO5mZbS#ycsdchat
A5: Whole brain in my class this this year. My Ss love to level up even my "beloved rascals" They also love our team effort with the scoreboard where they have a goal as a class and if they beat Mrs. Coaty we have a little class reward that promotes social skills. #ycsdchat
A5: As a classroom teacher, I used many of the tenets of @responsiveclass such as morning meetings, buddy classes, hopes & dreams, and academic choice. #ycsdchat
