#AoBEDchat A!: At the high school level, learn to manage work with some independence, review major concepts, develop planning and organizational skills, allow for some variation related to student interest.
A1: I don’t usually give a lot of homework on science. If I do, it is usually to make sure that the students have mastered the topic. Sometimes I will give homework as a review also. #AoBEdChat
#AoBEDchat A2: In elem and middle, I truly believe very little if any. It takes away from free choice reading and time with family. Children are not old enough to problem-solve well independently. At high school, 2 hours per night max. The brain starts to shut down...
#AoBEdchat Q2: I don’t see the purpose of giving hours of homework. That is not helpful for a student who is struggling with mastery and busy work for those who have achieved mastery.
A2 - I agree! And what is assigned should add value to instruction, not simply busywork for the sake of entering a grade in the gradebook. Less is more! #AoBEdchat
#AoBEDchat A3: That is a good question! In high school, I feel very little (unless it is a long-term assignment like an essay, report or project.) If you assign too much weight to HW in HS, Ss whose families have money for tutors will out perform those that don't...
A3: If tchrs gave less HW but it was more related to the standard there would be less grading. More time for lesson planning maybe but would parents revolt?. #AoBEdChat
#AoBEDchat A4: Great question. I teach Theology, and I like brief, thinking question such as: "What do you think happened to the Rich Young Man after he walked away from Jesus?" We discuss them the next day in class.
Q4 - Many HW assgts would need to be radically reinvented to properly address EQs. Move from drill/kill to deeper thinking. A flipped classroom approach changes this up big time! #AoBEdChat
A-5 I love to assign a popular non-fiction news magazine for homework. The students love to come in and discuss the current events they have read and evaluate the comprehension questions they have answered. Why they got a question correct or why they didn't. #AobEDChat
Parent education on this topic is greatly needed. Many Ps have views shaped by their own experience of school, and can view less HW as a sign of less rigor. #AoBEdChat

A-6 Our students are successful. However, they learn to understand they do not need their parents to help them complete homework. it is ok to make mistakes we learn best when we do. I teach them I want their original work. Mistakes are good!

A5: Take time in designing lessons to also incorporate ideas for homework to include investigating careers that utilize content and help show students the importance of application of knowledge. #AoBEdChat
#AoBEdChat Q6. When assigning homework, what specifically do you want students to understand? What inferences should they make? What misconceptions are predictable and will need overcoming?
A5 - HW done right could be where the lesson begins, not ends. Est. the line of inquiry to be explored independently. Then it gets continued the next day w/T support & assistance. #AoBEdchat
#AoBEDchat A6: I think the biggest misconception to overcome that is that everything always has to be "right." On the other hand, boring homework that is sloppy, rushed, and inaccurate just wastes everyone's time and teaches bad habits.
A6: I would love for my Ss to understand that it is okay (even encouraged!) to refer to one’s notes, handouts, textbook, etc when formulating answers to homework questions. Use the resources you have available to you! #AoBEdchat
A6: Mastery of a concept or skill is an ongoing process. Familiarizing yourself with key skills taught that day will set you up for success in each subsequent lesson. #AoBEdChat
A6: Use a flipped classroom model to help students see that previewingcontent and examples will set them up for success and take some of the fear or anxiety away of not knowing what to do or say. #AoBEdChat
Q6: I want students to recognize for themselves if they have truly understood a math concept or not. If not, then they should ask for clarification the next day. Self-reflection is helpful. #AoBEdChat
A6 - Yes! When Ss in a #flipclass use "HW" time to develop questions for the T about what interested, excited, or confused them that can be worthwhile. #AoBEdchat
#AoBEDchat A7: We have many students who are ELLs or have learning challenges. Assigning a video, with closed captioning, can work very well to introduce a new idea or theme. They have some grasp of vocab and concept before we start.
A7: I would love to give more technology-related assignments; however, I still have students (not many, but some) whose access to tech at home is either unreliable or nonexistent. #AoBEdchat
A7: Technology, if used properly can be a great resource for students for research, webquests. Etc.... However if not used properly, it can be a distraction #AoBEdchat
#AoBEDChat Thank you @nancyreed123 for such thoughtful questions. We do not have an Ed Chat here in @dioprovidence (yet!) and I always appreciate that @ArchbaltSchools welcomes me to participate. I have to go a little early. I hope everyone has a great end to the school year.
Q7: My students appreciate the instant feedback and tutorials for wrong answers when using IXL Math online. They seem more motivated to succeed than when solving problems from a textbook. #AoBEdChat
A8: Use frequent formative assessment opportunities to determine what I the teacher needs to improve upon and what my students need to do independently that will help bridge that gap. #AoBEdchat
Q8: I assign skills with which students have gained some confidence during class. Students feel frustrated when assigned skills for homework that are too new to them. #AoBEdChat
Reflect: Be more intentional in planning meaningful assignments that promote student confidence, skill mastery, and engagement in material taught. Utilize technology to help provide immediate feedback for students. #sharethegood with colleagues! #AoBEdchat
