Hello! I'm a pre-service teacher at The Ohio State University. After graduation, I'll be able to teach 7th - 12th grade Social Studies. If I could go to any country it would be Greece! #globaledchat#SSVPLN
A1: Students often aren't shown how math is applied - hence the "what will I ever use this for" refrain. #cte does a great job of helping students see relevance in math. #globaledchat
A1: Here is a blog titled “You Really Want To Humanize Math Education? Build A New Ship” from my mathematics brother @Mathgarden that has a solution to this problem
https://t.co/7P0kWQMo2i#globaledchat
A1: For many students math class is boring because they are just watching someone else do math. Students don't get to wonder, notice and question things.
#globaledchat#GobalMathWeek
A2: Integrate it into project based learning - especially projects with a #globaled focus. Students can see what math is used for and how it can help solve local and global issues. #globaledchat#globalmathweek
Are you doing any fun math with baseball @MathWithMatthew? (I'm from Wisconsin - Go Brewers! But my husband is a Yankees fan--from Newton). #globaledchat
A2: When students are doing math instead of watching they are much more engaged. When students are creating a math problem or solution or are teaching a math problem their engagement is through the roof. #globaledchat#GlobalMathWeek
A3: It's important to include the history of math in teaching - I'm sure it's difficult with testing, etc. But it's a great way to bring in a global perspective - so much of the history of math is global! https://t.co/n0qr4W5CMd#globalmathweek#globaledchat
A2: Make math challenging for all students while giving them worked problems. Works great in warm ups. Have several mandatory problems (review/current topics) then end with 1-2 "Master problems" The enjoyment is in the accessible challenge
#globaledchat
Q4: Math educators around the world agree that, to teach their subject matter effectively, it’s important to approach their classroom with a growth mindset. What resources related to growth mindset can you share to support fellow educators? #globaledchat
I could not agree more Kimm. We focus so much on the final formula or approach and not enough of the journey and struggles to discover the math #globaledchat
A4: Allowing students to retake assessments is a growth mindset, while not allowing this practice is a fixed mindset. https://t.co/7ikH3sYg3S#globaledchat
A4: To help other teachers teach with a growth mindset, give them some simple, clear, data. Each year of schooling can, on average, increase your students' IQs by 1-5 points. https://t.co/qUCohkqwKc#globaledchat
I dig the whole #growthmindset mantra, but we also have to give the kids something worth growing for ... math has to be more than working problems on paper ... when do the kids get to use math #globaledchat
A5: “Understanding, flexibility of thought, innovation, problem-solving, reflection on solutions and approaches, and the search for efficiency and elegance.” - @jamestantonhttps://t.co/zlH03lRv5J#globaledchat
I get math ... understand math ... dig math, but I am not a math teacher ... I teach Social Studies/Tech/Fabrication Lab ... the kids should not be shocked that math is used when working with wood. #globaledchat
A5: I think that the most important mathematical skills are effective communication, strong collaboration and and being open-minded are the most important mathematical skills for those who wish to compete globally. #globaledchat
A5: Math is not a stand alone content area. Real, authentic math challenges require planning, design, and flexibility. Oh, and the metric system! (Last week in Israel was a brain killer with the architectural design team and I taught Algebra and Geometry!) #globaledchat
So what is the end result? Satisfaction in solving the problem or was there an applicable purpose to working the problem? I'm snarky because I have middle school students who have no clue what the marks on a ruler mean. #globaledchat
A5: I think that the most important mathematical skills are effective communication, strong collaboration and being open-minded for those who wish to compete globally. #globaledchat
A6: I showed #explodingdots to my juniors and seniors today. Loved the sound effects they made. Will continue to show them further expansions of it #GlobalEdChat
Writing your answers publicly (on the window or wall) creates Collaboration, Movement, and Accountability. I think these are all things that don't always happen with pencil and paper. #GlobalEdChat
A7: I'm not in the classroom, so can I say that I'm going to let my son work on his math homework on the windows if gets him to do it without complaining? #globaledchat
Love this idea! It's amazing what a whiteboard marker on a window can do 🙌 our math teacher simply started using the little individual whiteboards for the kids to move around with, work ideas out, and share - they loved it! #globaledchat
Thank you Heather. Please connect with me everyone if you want to talk more joyful math. Here is my website: https://t.co/vIMSWahGyc Also, thanks to @annemariefiore for making the .jpg images for the questions tonight #globaledchat
