A group of dedicated educators gather each week to discuss best practices & designing the school of the future. @yankee_todd is a third year principal of the middle school in San Antonio. #neisdpln is an amazing hour each Monday night at 7:30 central time.
Hello, fellow educators! Thanks for joining us for tonight's #neisdpln chat! Before we begin, please tell us a bit about yourself. Don't forget to include #neisdpln in your answer.
A1: I’d much rather plan a staff PD day than a Royal Wedding! Weddings and celebrities aren’t really my cup of tea. #seewhatididthere#nerdalert#neisdpln
A1: PD day! I’d rather be judged on a smaller scale! I jest. But with PD I could lean on my coteachers and make it meaningful to our positions. I would hope. #neisdpln
Plan a staff PD day that would incorporate an "escape room" with several campus initiatives topics - Aware, Lead4ward, Skyward, Instructional Strategies...#neisdpln
A1: Staff PD. I like sharing my ideas with other teachers, and if I can help teach them a new innovative at to teach something that’s even better. And, I’m the queen of Pinterest Fails, so the royal wedding would be pretty lame!!#neisdpln

I'm Mike, college professor (graphic design), avid #doodler and #sketchnoter, father of 5 NEISD students... one of which has the awesome @kcross34 as a teacher this year! #neisdpln

A2: So sad to say, I’d take the colonoscopy!! While accountability is important, there has to be a better way than a test that makes, both s’s and t’s, anxious and worried about what happens next. #neisdpln
A2: GOOD GRIEF. Are you really gonna make me say it? How about NO on the more state testing? Why are we pushed to be innovative and then judged on standardized testing that is anything BUT? #sorrynotsorry#neisdpln
A2. I would rather take up the um... (you know) than have more state testing for my kids. I think that the state testing that is done now is enough to garner what is needed. Now state quizzing... that's an idea. #neisdpln

A2 con’t: Even my Little’s get anxious because we have to be so quiet, and some of their siblings have to take it so they’re nervous for them. My own daughter asked me when she’ll have to take it (she’s in 1st), and is already anxious about it. 😟#neisdpln
A2: It would rather do the monthly colonoscopy! Creating alternative assessments to be able to provide avenues in which students can demonstrate their mastery is so much fun that closing down a school so that students can take their tests for one snapshot! #neisdpln
LOL! I bet it would be fun for you to plan a Professional Development Day for the teachers! Just remember they get to wear pajamas all day and a 2 hour lunch. #neisdpln
Thanks @terrieichholz. My kids have had the pleasure of passing through the halls of Wetmore, Driscoll, and MacArthur... and next year we're adding Nimitz to the mix since my daughter got accepted into the STEM program there! #neisdpln

A3: do more of my own IF I get to choose the topic and product. Would love more time to concentrate on one thing instead of trying to do too much at once. #neisdpln
A3: I hate giving homework! Just let them read for fun! Keep reading & learning positive! Plus my hubby would love if I cleaned the house more lol #neisdpln
A3: Housework!! TBH I don’t make my own kids do their HW *gasp*. Granted they’re in Kinder and 1st, so at their age, I believe, meaningful conversations and real life experiences are more important than anything on a worksheet. I think that is important at any age. #neisdpln
Family time is so important. We see the children more than parents do. It’s tough to rob them of quality time. But READING is fun for the whole family! #neisdpln
A3. Do more of the homework I assign. I've always had a rule that I wouldn't assign anything to my students that I wouldn't want to do myself. "Practice what you preach" is something we all need to take note of now and again. #neisdpln
A3: I think we need to redefine homework and make it something families could maybe do together to enrich children...the "new" homework shouldn't be work at all. #neisdpln
I don't assign homework, but I often do what I've assigned to my students so they can see me going through the process, too. Good for #GrowthMindset#neisdpln
A3: Our son is not going to reflect as an adult on that “awesome worksheet” homework assignment he had. He is goin to remember GREAT classroom/group moments. Just sayin. #neisdpln
A4 I love field trips. They equalize the playing field for students who might not have experiences upon which to build new learning! Definitely field trip! #neisdpln
A4: Chaperone! Yes, it is exhausting! Yes, the kiddos are full of energy! What a better way to experience all the hard work through the year! #neisdpln
A4. Easy, I'd chaperone... FIELD TRIPS ROCK! (I've taken a group of 30 college students to London & Paris for 10 days with only one other faculty... but I have great students so it was a walk in the park.) #neisdpln
A4: Hmmm... politicians are pretty much like Pre-K students, so I think I could do that. 😂 I like end of year field trips. I think when you take your students outdside the school in a more relaxed setting, you see each other in a new way. #neisdpln

A4: field trip!! I’m way too much of an introvert to moderate a presidential debate (although I’d love to go behind the scenes). Plus, I have 4 years of Sea World camp counselor experience so I got field trips!. #neisdpln
A.4 I would rather monitor a presidential press conference bc I could serve my son's #DonaldTrump cake after the questioning! #neisdpln Make Books Great Again!
A4.. End of year party! The kids are better behavedtgan politicians even at the end of the year!! Plus.. they are nicer than politicians too:) #neisdpln
@4: chaperone an end of the year trip. At least I know what I’m getting with the kiddos. Not like some of those presidential clowns that run for office. Kids have a reason to be silly. They’re KIDS! #neisdpln
Last month I was invited by the Oak Meadow Elementary PTA to teach #sketchnotes to 4th & 5th graders. I brought two education majors that are taking my "Visual Note Taking Workshop" course to assist me. We have a blast. We're going back soon for the 2nd & 3rd graders. #neisdpln
A5: no brainer! ALL sts respond with text talk and emojis. But yeah I’m elementary so cannot relate to HS. But if it gets us communicating I’m definitely in. #neisdpln
A5 We have nextgen smartboards that connect with devices at the student desk so that they can create and interact with teacher and each other. Teachers also use Nearpod to do it. It is amazing to watch! #neisdpln
A5: Being a former HS Science teacher, I'll take this one....Absolutely have my student respond with text talk and emojis! Great way to have 100% participation and Ss love it! #neisdpln
A5 Text talk and emojis. At least it's some kind of interaction! They might revert to real talk when all the adults catch on and it's no longer "cool." 🤣#neisdpln

A5: Emojis would be perfect for my class... Hmm... Now I need to make a Seesaw activity where they have to use emojis to answer. #thanksforanewidea#neisdpln
A5. This one's tough... can I vote neither? 😃 ... but if I had to pick one, I'd got for the first choice - though it would bug me to high heaven, at least they'd be responding. #neisdpln
A6 Write a book about my teaching adventures. So many stories to tell after 18 years! However, I'd be interested to see what they write about me ;-) #neisdpln
A6: definitely have my kids write about me and add a chapter a year. Would be great for reflection and growth on my part. And probably would be good for comic relief at times. #neisdpln
A6: Write the book! I keep mentioning him and he won’t like it, but Brian and I have said it would be HILARIOUS to write, “The Stuff We’ve Seen: Days in the Life of a Teacher.” 😂 It’s why we comeback everyday! #neisdpln

A6: write a book about my teaching adventures because I’d love to share stories about how much love I have for my kiddos. I have a file on my hard drive full of kids funnies and quotations that I want to publish one day.❤️ #neisdpln
A6 Although its a little scary, I would like my students to write a book about me. We are in ed for the long haul and dont always get to see the impacts we have. I have interacted with thousands of students over 25 years, and still sometimes wonder if I had an effect. #neisdpln
A6: I would love to see what the kids would say about me. I’d like to see the difference between my Little’s I have now, compared to my Little’s that are in MS. #neisdpln
A6. I would love to see how my students would describe me and my classes (and they'd probably go off on a tangent... like me)! But it would have to be illustrated... in comic book form... and we'd have to have secret identities. #neisdpln
