We invite all educators to contribute to the conversation of preparing preservice teachers as well as practicing teachers for the realities of the 21st-century classroom. This includes principals, in-service teachers, university supervisors of student teachers, education professors, higher education administration, instructional technology specialists, and so on. Anyone with a vested interest in supporting our teachers in preparation for teaching the diverse K-12 student population is invited to participate.

We are talking libraries and media centers tonight
Hey Alex in LA. Teacher of Tech/Teaching Ts to tech. Good evening.
Hi - I tweet GIFs from Seattle and talk about libraries and education some too
Sounds like we do similar teaching
Perfect gif --why do you think gifs are becoming increasingly popular on Twitter?
Jenny, PreK-4 library media specialist from Durham, CT
I expect high quality Community gifs tonight
Q1: When you were a Pre-service educator, how was working with a librarian described?
Hoping to learn from you how you use Twitter & other social media in Library and Media Center
A1: I don't recall it being a focus at all but when I was pre-service, I had a 2nd job in library
I am here & happy to respond!
A1: The question raises the point about incorporating library collaborations into pre-service teacher prep courses
How do you believe library collaborations should be incorporated into preservice teacher ed programs?
A1: I don’t remember that far back; today I work to support pre-service Ts w/ units, lessons, etc. that need books &/or tech
Which is why we need to focus on making librarians part of the mix beyond just research skills
I'm Sandy Boyd and I am a Student Teacher with the University of Arkansas.
Dan, business teacher joining in late.
A1: Can't say that I actually interacted with the librarian when i was a pre-service teacher.
Did you have experiences in your preservice courses that included collaborations with school librarians?
this is why having access to curriculum materials centers are so important in pre-service programs
I have had the opportunity to work with the librarian at my current student teaching placement. She has been great!
A1: I hope teacher ed programs tell pre-serv Ts to go find the LMS immediately.
Whether called media specialists or librarians, these are the go-to-people for collaboration
A1: I make it a point to connect w student Ts in our building to try modeling that collaboration
Agree, the LMS can be your best professional resource person https://t.co/IEx3thxL4A
A1: I hope teacher ed programs tell pre-serv Ts to go find the LMS immediately.
Excellent and spread the word among your colleagues in the field https://t.co/znlzAEid4b
A1: I make it a point to connect w student Ts in our building to try modeling that collaboration
Hello Justin middle school social studies from NJ here a little late.
Q2: Since being in a school, how have you interacted with your library staff?
A1: I provide knowledge about books, tech, standards, research, & more! I like to think librarians are huge resources!
Glad you're here as we discuss the role of LMS in schools and teacher ed progams
mine are appreciative bc I share the load, not add to it
Glad you're here as we discuss the role of LMS in schools and teacher ed programs
but adding them into the class as co-teachers models for students
I have worked with the librarian on printing projects for students and acquiring specific books for students.
A2: I plan collaborative projects w/ librarians both on the college campus and w/ those in school systems
A2: I interact with them on a daily basis almost! and I are buddies!
A2: Just last week, joined my course via a Google Hangout & she got the teachers hooked on Twitter
A2 Not as well as I should have since we've gone digital.
it's definitely good modeling if the pre-service teacher is ready for it
What kinds of things need to be printed?
The intern in my bding comes for book ideas as she plans her lessons. I find things so she doesn’t have to.
In addition to getting class resources, my school librarians are awesome for helping me pick my next reads
Explain what you mean and why going digital has made a difference
They were awesome & asked great questions! They jumped on Twitter right away & now have started to form great PLN.
Given this is National Library Week, we should all make it a point of collaborating with our librarians/MLS
We also collaborate tons on digital research.
hmm, my librarian is up on the digital stuff
a2: I stole her tape and used her printer.
Working on a map project with my students while we read the graphic novel Maus. Using maps for location changes.
Would hope all school librarians are up on digital stuff
& also a leader in new ideas, new books, new tech to try. As a former classroom T, I know where they are come from
So could the map locations be done digitally?
Q3: Library seem to be constantly reinventing themselves, how has your library changed to help your students?
right, I would think that would be like a prerequisite. You gotta love those books, too though
Google has terrific digital products for mapping!
What are some librarians/MLS, you suggest others follow on Twitter?
Yes. But we wanted the students to add different layers to the Map. Contextualize it with info about characters.
You bet, still love books even in print
We would have loved that but did not have time to teach our ESOL level 2 students about how to use the tech
Contribute ideas to now as we discuss librarians
That makes sense: reach students where they are
So many amazing ones! Each often has a specialty. Rather than list folks, check out .
A3: It has incorporated new technology with desktops and chromebooks. has also created a for Ss/Ts
We wanted them to have the opportunity to create something tangible instead of struggling to learn the tech
A3: our motto is "engage your brain" which looks diff for every kid - games, maker area, homework help, open mic day, & more!
Q3: Library seem to be constantly reinventing themselves, how is your library has your changed to help your students?
Hands on is important too!
Perfect hashtags & Thanks for sharing. Will pass along to others
A3: although we have quiet zones - we definitely are not a silent library. Lots of collaboration in our space
A3: Noticed many libraries have set up to keep students engaged in hands-on, creative learning
A3 This yr we added recording studio & green screen, self-check-out for 3rd gr Ss. Next yr->Makerspace!
Fantastic to see digital storytelling and comparable tools in the media/library center
A3: sounds simple, but genre sorting fiction section has really increased circulation
A3: Visited one media center where the librarians spend all their time in the classroom team teaching
Not easy, but genrefying is HUGE! Ss & Ts can more easily find their favs & new things to try!
That would be awesome to do! Collaborative teaching could help students learn more about what tools are available.
A3: Mine hasn't changed much. A lot of what we used to need the library for is in the class.
A3: Have also noticed 3D printers in libraries, including the public library, so wondering about that use
it took many student and parent volunteers to get the job done!
That level of commitment suggests parents and students will stay involved
A3 We are trying to design a MakerSpace. Won't be in our library. But it is a growing trend for school libraries.
which is why we are at such a pivotal point for change
Using 3D printer as part of supporting 4Cs - esp creativity, critical thinking - started w/1sts today
Do you think there are things the library space could allow you to do that you can't do in class
Would love to see in action how 1st graders use 3D printing
Cool. It doesn't matter where the space is. Just make sure stakeholders are thinking learning first
Explain if you can in a tweet
Ss love using green screen too!
How are your students using the green screen tools?
my fave story is a girl who built a 3D printed "plug" for clearance shoes w a hole in them from a mannequin
Have you blogged about that, Kristen?
Q5: How can you take advantage of the material in your Media Center?
Variety of ways - summer rdg suggest in front of where they like to read in summer. Sharing research “in” that place.
Working on “mini-green screens” in pizza boxes too.
Q4: How can you take advantage of the material in your Media Center?
Love and would like to hear more about how you use it in social studies curriculum
A4: If you don't get opportunity to have Ss search, you can at least model checking out materials, reading
See your point. What do you do when students do their own searching, though?
A4: Come in to the LMC! Email your LMS! Chat in the hall! Hand me sticky notes. I do whatever it takes to support my Ts & Ss.
is a game based scenario similar to an escape room. Ss work w clues to unlock a box b4 time is out
A4: I go to team meetings w/ books suggestions, show tech & more.
This sounds great! Does it cover only one specific content area?
not yet! I need to, because it was pretty awesome 🙃😛
A4: Visit Media Center daily/weekly & those in the Media Center visit & collaborate w/ classes
Ts and librarians build the games so it's perfect for any content or level
You can do anything! has created a bunch on all diff topics! Amazing!
A3: Libraries encourage and , as well now. https://t.co/YkIuTwGqdt
Q3: Library seem to be constantly reinventing themselves, how has your library changed to help your students?
Awesome! How long does it take the students to learn how to use the program?
Wish were on this chat now
they don't. Throw them in a room w a scenario & box & watch the magic happen!
is one of my favorite tools for collaboration and digital literacies
A4: I'm constantly checking out chromecarts. is a wealth of knowledge that I try and use to my advantage.
It’s not technology, but thinking about clues. Could use iPad/computer but not needed
A4: both physics & coding classes have gotten use out of our set this year
Q5: Why is it important to have Pre-service teachers build a relationship with their librarian?
A4: Do we even need to visit the Media Center to take advantage of all it has to offer?
A5: Once a new teacher starts out, the librarian can end up being the go-to person for assistance, mentoring, etc
we offer several digital ebooks and tools. Also go into classes and help faculty
A5: There is a lot of opportunity for knowledge sharing over new tech and ways to change traditional teaching to engage Ss.
A5: The first person to meet on the job as a new teacher should be the librarian/media specialist
A5: support in instructional design, resources, assessment, tech & more! We are a partner, which is needed those 1st years!
Yes!!! Inquiry learning, tech, new books! Find your LMS! https://t.co/eq6uQ934JZ
A5: There is a lot of opportunity for knowledge sharing over new tech and ways to change traditional teaching to engage Ss.
A5: I have 2 media librarian specialists in my course now & they're a wealth of information/resources
https://t.co/49CrRrLK7y
A5: The first person to meet on the job as a new teacher should be the librarian/media specialist
Thanks for supporting & giving shout-outs to LMS!
Q6: How is your school celebrating School Library Month?
A5; I find that I often ask questions that get preservice Ts thinking more deeply about the research they assign
Need to visit you next time am in Delray Beach. Can you jump on to now where we're talking school libraries
A6: ummmm...good question! I've been focusing more on 😳😳
presents perfect opportunity to celebrate !
A5: Because they are the ones that know the most!
A6: Making special plans to go to library this week to sign out a bunch of books!
Great job, moderating on the topic of libraries and media centers
A6: I bombard her twitter account so she joins these chats sooner or later. I also tell her how much I appreciate her.
What is twitter handle here?
