Julie, Chicago, 6th ELA, Docs my favorite character:"There's that word again. "Heavy." Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the Earth's gravitational pull?" #122EdChat
I feel like I can relate to Marty McFly because I always am up for taking a risk... especially when it comes to advocating for my students and colleagues!! #122edchat#KidsDeserveIt
Mike, from Buffalo, NY. Husband, Dad, Learner, Tech Integrator, Blogger, Podcaster, Music Lover, Hockey Player, #122edchat Fanboy. Glad you’re here! Favorite quote from Back to the Future is from Doc: “Roads? Where we are going we don’t need roads!” @_on11@megan_hacholski
Rhea from @CaldwellElemen in Florida, 4th grade ELA. I had the biggest crush on Huey Lewis in the 80's until I found out he was as old as my Dad!! Put on a great concert though! So here's my Back to the Future fun... #122edchat
Hi, Susan from Oak Lawn #d123 joining in with great friends down the street #122edchat "Wait a minute doc...ah...are you telling me you built a TIME MACHINE...out of a delorean?!
Q1 Keep the best and forget the rest. If you could travel back in time in your education journey, what advice would you give your younger self? #122edchat
A1 I would have advised myself to start my own school when I had the interested educators and families…I chickened out and took a safe job instead. I would also advise myself to stop letting people hold me back because I disrupt their status quo too much. #122edchat
Q1 Keep the best and forget the rest. If you could travel back in time in your education journey, what advice would you give your younger self? #122edchat
A1: “The BEST thing you can do is take your work home with you & the WORST thing you can do it take your work home with you!” You can’t take good care of students unless you take good care of yourself. #122edchat
Glad to be here. It’s like eating dinner with my four kids. Giving everyone equal attention and focus, yet slightly overwhelmed:) #LastingLearning and #122edchat
A1: Wow, has it already been 3 years?! Hmm... I'd have to say "Big Things Big, Small Things Small... don't sweat the small stuff, everything always works out." #122edchat
A1: Simple. "Shut up and listen. You don't know everything." Failed a lot because I thought I knew better than everyone else, I won fancy awards in college, but all this means nothing in the real world if you don't listen to the vets. #122edchat
A1: I would tell my younger self that it’s ok to make mistakes. I often would shut down if met with failure and see this in my Ss. Encourage Ss that it’s ok to make mistakes. #122edchat
A1: Focus less on content and more on building community. Don’t bring work home! Take care of yourself in order to take care of your students. #122edchat
A1: I would advise myself to spend more time learning math and less time being afraid of it. I would also advise myself to balance my time better. #122EdChat
A1 Don’t sweat the small stuff. #TeachLikeYOU. Relationships over EVERYTHING. Content matters but it is not everything. Chill with assigning homework, seriously. Have fun. Laugh at yourself more. #122edchat
Q1 Keep the best and forget the rest. If you could travel back in time in your education journey, what advice would you give your younger self? #122edchat
Intro: Shelly Andrews, AP of the Bulldogs of James Wood Middle. Favorite quote from an influential educator: @ann1622 once asked me “are you sure this is the hill you want to die on?” Life changing question. #122edchat
A1- Don't sweat the small stuff. You do not have to be involved in everything. Don't get involved with the drama. Work smarter not harder.I think I would tell myself to switch to 6-12 instead of K-9 license. #122EdChat
A1: To talk to people around me when stressed out. I wish I had that advice last year while I was student teaching. I was so overwhelmed and struggling to find my outlet. #122edchat
A1- Relationships with the veteran educators are just as important and valuable as the ones with those who are new like you! You can learn so much from all. #122edchat
A1: Explore your curiosities! I was fascinated by geology, especially geologic folds. I didn’t have many opportunities to study them in school. It reminds me that we need to give students opportunities to study their curiosities. #122edchat
A1) kids don’t learn from me lecturing and reading from textbooks. Year 1/2 that’s all I did. Low engagement and enthusiasm. Turn it around and out the learning in their hands with a range of resources #122edchat
Q1 Keep the best and forget the rest. If you could travel back in time in your education journey, what advice would you give your younger self? #122edchat
Hey everyone! Steve, a Tech Integrator from Canandaigua, NY. Fave BTTF quote: “So you're my Uncle Joey. Better get used to these bars, kid.”
#122edchat
A1 Everyone knows everyone else in education. Choose your confidants wisely. Also, articulate your vision, post it, and remind yourself of it. Adjust as needed. #122edchat
Q1 Keep the best and forget the rest. If you could travel back in time in your education journey, what advice would you give your younger self? #122edchat
A1: I’m only in my second year, but I always try to remind myself that there is no such thing as a perfect teacher. It’s ok to make mistakes and learn with your kids! #122edchat
I would tell myself lesson plans are not ever going to go as planned 🤣 ... be prepared to think on your feet and adjust on the fly... Marty mcFLY to be exact 😉 #EDL577UM#UMedTech#122edchat
A1) Breath! You can't do it all and its ok to take baby steps. Also...go home don't stay till 8pm. Its ok to be different and do fun things but don't reinvent the wheel #122edchat
A1: Simple. "Shut up and listen. You don't know everything." Failed a lot because I thought I knew better than everyone else, I won fancy awards in college, but all this means nothing in the real world if you don't listen to the vets. #122edchat
A1: my FIRST time at college I got distracted by... well... my now ex-husband LOL. But honestly, I wouldn't have my amazing kids if I didn't so as much as I wish I hadn't waited so long to finish a degree I probably wouldn't change a thing... #122edchat
Q1 Keep the best and forget the rest. If you could travel back in time in your education journey, what advice would you give your younger self? #122edchat
A1p2: ...maybe I'd just go back to Halloween of this school year and tell myself to go to the doctor sooner - 2 weeks of no voice was no fun!
Really though, we learn from every mistake we make, so going back would remove those learning opportunities! #122edchat
A1 stop thinking you are their main champion. I worked at a title one school , intense but wonderful.
I would love to say don't put so much pressure on yourself...they have other champions called parents, bring them in! #122edchat
Q1 Keep the best and forget the rest. If you could travel back in time in your education journey, what advice would you give your younger self? #122edchat
A1: You are going to have good days and bad days. Learn from both of them. Know that what happens in your first year is part of the growth process. Every minute that you spend with students matters. Don't waste them. You are right where you are supposed to be. #122edchat
A1: I would spend more time teaching kids how to think as opposed to what to think. I also would have a lot more grace for students, teachers, and admin. #122edchat
Q2 You now have the POWER to go back in time. What would you tamper with in education's past to alter the course for the future of education? #122edchat
Q1 Keep the best and forget the rest. If you could travel back in time in your education journey, what advice would you give your younger self? #122edchat
A2: I would want education to focus more on Ss as a whole as opposed to as a test score. Implement more growth mindset curriculum, zones of regulation curriculum, more student services. #122edchat
A2: Get rid of the traditional idea that the teacher needs to be at the front of the classroom at all times! We are guides in learning; our students should take the lead. #122edchat
A2: I would place less emphasis on student scores on state and national assessments! Research shows the pressure/anxiety the assessments place on students at such an early age! Assessment is okay, just make sure we are not basing one score to show the whole child #122edchat
A2: Skip teaching my 2nd grade kids how to build PowerPoints in 2008. Should have taught them how to build websites and code instead. Much more functional in today's world. #122edchat
A2 I'd travel back in time and make textbooks update automatically w/ the world. No static pages. Open Edu Resources #OER would be the norm. I’d also go back to all college level pre-service edu courses post 2006 and require everyone to start building a PLN. #122edchat
Q2 You now have the POWER to go back in time. What would you tamper with in education's past to alter the course for the future of education? #122edchat
A2: I read something today that make me think about this VERY thing: “Perspective | Forget coding. It’s the SOFT SKILLS, stupid. And that’s what schools should be teaching.” Read this later! https://t.co/tEk3XRlEHV#122edchat
A1: And, spend time creating. Even if you’re not ready to share, spend time creating...writing, content, technology. It will serve you well! #122edchat
A2 Heck ya! I’d put an end to the factory model of U.S. public education, discriminatory practices like tracking and unequal resource allocation (people & money) and holding everyone to ‘average’ instead of excellent. I can go on and on! #122edchat
A2: I’d say - hang in there and eventually you’ll have a. Ritually PLN on Twitter.
I’d also remind myself to remain grateful. Sharing and guiding a learning journey is a privilege
#122edchat
1) I would tell myself to stop setting myself up for the next thing and work on this moment. Never say "I can't wait until..." That just causes you to miss out on today. #122edchat
A1: Let go of your need to be in control & just enjoy the ride!!! I stressed way too much in those early years and missed out on opportunities to take risks!! Also, I’d tell myself to not be so harsh on myself! I’m my worst critic! #122edchat
Q2 You now have the POWER to go back in time. What would you tamper with in education's past to alter the course for the future of education? #122edchat
A2: I would place less emphasis on student scores on state and national assessments! Research shows the pressure/anxiety the assessments place on students at such an early age! Assessment is okay, just make sure we are not basing one score to show the whole child #122edchat
A2) this idea of creating a factory system of learning. Bells, rows, listen do and repeat. Learning should be collaborative, students should follow their interests, and be asked to problem solve more #122edchat
A2: DIFFERENTIATION. Growing up, differentiation was a myth. I remember I would learn something in a different way than my peers and I would be told that there was only ONE WAY. #122edchat
YES! Why do we always feel like we need to be perfect? So exhausting. Sends the wrong message to our student. We need to model failing gracefully. #122edchat
A2: I believe most educators answers will be similar - stop the shift towards high stakes testing and somehow convince those in political power over edu to think more about the whole child than a one day performance #122edchat
Q2 You now have the POWER to go back in time. What would you tamper with in education's past to alter the course for the future of education? #122edchat
A1 I think I would tell me younger self that I'm not cool and to just be your authentic self. Also, games and fun are important ways to engage kids with the content. #122edchat
Q2 You now have the POWER to go back in time. What would you tamper with in education's past to alter the course for the future of education? #122edchat
A2: I would go back and increase education on students with disabilities and educate student populations. I remember as a student, those children would get picked on for being different. If only our old culture put more emphasis on inclusion instead of ostracizing. #122edchat
Q2: I would tamper with the idea that we learn math by memorizing facts and practicing the algorithm just like our teacher did on the board 40 times every night #122edchat#itsaboutmakingsense
Q2 You now have the POWER to go back in time. What would you tamper with in education's past to alter the course for the future of education? #122edchat
A2) I think I would want to alter how the grading system looked and classrooms looked in the past. Made it more about student growth and the classrooms more flexible and less restrictive. #122edchat
A2: Definitely standardized testing, and the focus on numbers and grades. Kids are much more than a number, and I think we would be living a little differently if we hadn’t made that our priority. #122edchat
A2: I would want education to focus more on Ss as a whole as opposed to as a test score. Implement more growth mindset curriculum, zones of regulation curriculum, more student services. #122edchat
Q3 Fire up the DeLorean! We’re off to the year 2122. What can you do today to make sure students are FUTURE ready? Share a lesson or activity of yours that had impact that will last well into the future. #122edchat
A2b: #122edchat I get so tired of seeing some of our kids feel downtrodden because they don't think they can pass the test, but they are absolutely brilliant in other areas!
A2: Definitely standardized testing, and the focus on numbers and grades. Kids are much more than a number, and I think we would be living a little differently if we hadn’t made that our priority. #122edchat
A2 Samuel here jumping in a tad late, would put a bigger emphasis on the #WholeChild love this saying I saw on twitter #MaslowBeforeBloom which is what many are sharing in this twitter chat with relationships and so forth #122edchat
A3: I’m running a med student / anatomy themed @breakoutEDU in a couple weeks that I hope will be a memorable end of the year experience for my 8th graders. #122edchat
A3: In order to be FUTURE ready, my students are learning to check MULTIPLE sources of information for accurate info. and not believe the first "fact" they see. We are doing this by researching info. on the diff. habitats! #122edchat#KidsDeserveIt
A3 Find out their passions & interests and find a way to tap into them. As @jmattmiller says “There's no playbook for learning in today’s world.” We don’t know what the future will look like but we do know creativity, problem finders/solvers & empathy will be critical. #122edchat
A3: Any way that we can expose them to coding or web design is a win. Such practical skills that are so essential now. Also, getting them to realize that they have the power now to have an impact is essential. They don't have to wait to be a college graduate first. #122edchat
Prevent Thorndike from "defeating" Dewey and enacting standards, assessment, and qualifications to education, instead focusing on education AS learning. #122edchat#restorehumanity
Q2 You now have the POWER to go back in time. What would you tamper with in education's past to alter the course for the future of education? #122edchat
A3: In our class we focus on many different vocational skills that will prepare Ss for their future. My favorite is our Coffee Cart, where Ss make and sell coffee for Ts in our building. Ss follow a job schedule, total Ts bills, deliver change, and now even do laundry! #122edchat
A2 I would go back to a time when fluency in content was still valued and students were taught content before being expected to comprehend it in mandated reading passages. #122edchat
Q2 You now have the POWER to go back in time. What would you tamper with in education's past to alter the course for the future of education? #122edchat
2) I would not allow states to minimize the teacher licensure process. Doctors and lawyers have a difficult time getting credentials, yet there is no shortage or lack of pay. When we minimize and create shortcuts, we can sometimes have unintended results. #122edchat
A3- No matter what lesson you do, make sure kids are learning life skills along with the content. Soft skills are what make them successful in life! #122edchat
A2: TALK ABOUT THE REAL WORLD. Lately, that's all I've been doing in my classes. Being a person of color, I feel that it's important to talk about real world issues. I always tell them that they're the generation that will change history. #122edchat
A1: I would tell myself to make time for myself...planning ahead of time can give me more “me” time. That would keep the burnout away, lower the stress levels, and just make me a happier person. #122edchat
A2: I would change the emphasis on standardized testing. Write more! Create more! Think through problems and then write about how you got the answer. Life doesn't always have one neat answer. #122edchat
A3:A2: TALK ABOUT THE REAL WORLD. Lately, that's all I've been doing in my classes. Being a person of color, I feel that it's important to talk about real world issues. I always tell them that they're the generation that will change history. #122edchat
A3 Making global connections is where it’s at (& will be). Future folk will be well-traveled geographically &/or virtually as part of their work and lives so using global goals like #SDGs will help us connect, and be sensitive to and proactive about society’s needs #122edchat
A3- I honestly cannot think of a specific lesson, but I try to get them ready daily. I feel that if they leave with a little something more than they came with, I have done my job. Ultimately I want them all to be the best person they can be!! #122edchat
A2'
I would go back and add loving educators to my mothers life bc this would have made her see herself differently, all my uncles and aunts.
They were so discouraged and the best people I know...
How would their lives be different with loving educators in the 50s
#122edchat
Q2 You now have the POWER to go back in time. What would you tamper with in education's past to alter the course for the future of education? #122edchat
Q3 Fire up the DeLorean! We’re off to the year 2122. What can you do today to make sure students are FUTURE ready? Share a lesson or activity of yours that had impact that will last well into the future. #122edchat
A3: I had my students design websites for the Roaring 20s. One student said that she liked the project because in her future she will need to design websites (even though she is not planning a compsci career). I have 12 year olds who can design websites now! Wow! #122edchat
A2: I would not put so much of an emphasis on grades. Focus on a growth mindset versus whether or not a child makes the honor roll. Education is not about grades. It is about learning and mastery. Put the focus on growth, not about the A. Embrace failure and learn. #122edchat
A3: TALK ABOUT THE REAL WORLD. Lately, that's all I've been doing in my classes. Being a person of color, I feel that it's important to talk about real world issues. I always tell them that they're the generation that will change history. #122edchat
A3: In order to be FUTURE ready, my students are learning to check MULTIPLE sources of information for accurate info. and not believe the first "fact" they see. We are doing this by researching info. on the diff. habitats! #122edchat#KidsDeserveIt
A2. In my first semester of teaching, it was trying to advocate for someone with a disability received earlier in life, but sometimes the standardized tests don't tell the true story! #122edchat
A3: future readiness requires resilience. My Ss have always benefited from lessons that centered around a challenge they had to overcome and the decisions they made that helped them overcome it. This lesson can take many forms. #122edchat
Q3 Fire up the DeLorean! We’re off to the year 2122. What can you do today to make sure students are FUTURE ready? Share a lesson or activity of yours that had impact that will last well into the future. #122edchat
I had one today say “I’ll never pass the SOL, so why should I even try?” School is hard for him, but he has so much knowledge and intelligence that will make him successful once he realizes his true power. #122edchat
A3: Future-ready means understanding that we are all part of the whole. Empathy, kindness, gratitude, global awareness. Anytime students can see the world beyond the classroom walls they are sitting in is preparing them for the future. #122edchat
A2 Tying everything to high stakes testing. I feel like we have been so focused on scores the Ss get lost in the shuffle. We need accountability but there has to be a better way. #122edchat
A2: If I were to change something about education’s past, I would sneak into Capitol Hill and destroy the No child left behind. It ruined education in America. #122edchat
A3: Make it meaningful and applicable to the STUDENTS. I used @robertkaplinsky scenarios to challenge them to solve real life situations that they WILL SEE in the world. #CriticalThinking#122edchat
It's fantastic! There are lots of free resources on their website, but I'm happy to share my lesson plan if you want to shoot me a DM later! #122edchat
Q3b I am incorporating the #SDGs into social studies this year and plan to add #SDGS to ELA with more service learning and #CivicAction endeavors next year too. #122edchat
#122edchat A2. hi aprajita Ralli here... jumping in as this question 2 caught my attention...I'd definitely change the way we learnt and crammed information in our growing years.
It really does take a village and every component within a school including family & community play a critical part in supporting the #WholeChild#122EdChat
Q3: Give them cognitively challenging problems to solve so they can learn how to identify the challenge, communicate their thinking and explore solution paths #122edchat#itnevergoesoutofstyle
Q3 Fire up the DeLorean! We’re off to the year 2122. What can you do today to make sure students are FUTURE ready? Share a lesson or activity of yours that had impact that will last well into the future. #122edchat
A3) Do we even know what’s coming in the future? We have to have them ready for anything. Be able to collaborate, critically think and problem solve on their feet, take criticism and grow from feedback, so many possibilities #122edchat
A3 Arguably there's no telling what the future holds, but we can at least teach a love of learning & how to inquire/discover/think. Having students explore their passions through discussion, reflection, research, and practice has great implications. #122edchat
My students were global citizens this week and connected with the Dean of the College of Education from Cape Peninsula University in Cape Town, South Africa!!!! #122edchat
A3: just today I tried “So What” from @ctovani Do I have to teach reading? It was awesome for conversations. Thanks for the suggestion @ShelfieTalk#122edchat
Q3 Fire up the DeLorean! We’re off to the year 2122. What can you do today to make sure students are FUTURE ready? Share a lesson or activity of yours that had impact that will last well into the future. #122edchat

Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
A3 I’m out of examples out the moment BUT how about just helping students find their PASSIONS NOW. They can start pursuing their dreams NOW. Not wait until college. #122edchat
A2: fight to abolish NCLB. Stop the the testing companies and textbook companies and the test prep companies and the test analyzer companies and the test scorer companies from getting power to control education. #122edchat
A3: We studied the immigrant/refugee experience through lit, then created art to sell at a school auction. We donated the funds to support an art program that uses art therapy to help kids cope w/ trauma. We hope everyone keeps paying it forward far into the future. #122edchat
a3: my most impactful lessons were those that found a way to integrate kindness into our LEQs/UEQs. For over a month I had students sneaking #choosekind into their essays! #122edchat
Q3 Fire up the DeLorean! We’re off to the year 2122. What can you do today to make sure students are FUTURE ready? Share a lesson or activity of yours that had impact that will last well into the future. #122edchat
A3: I do a project where my Ss learn about #microfinance and then make loans through the @Kiva platform. Very powerful way for Ss to connect with the world and understand the concept of #sharedhumanity#122edchat
A3) Going along with soft skills our district does a Great Shake competition similar to the one done @ronclarkacademy It is an amazing experiences and puts students in situations that they may experience in the future and practice networking. #122edchat
A3 Reading Each Kindness book and then doing a lesson on water ripples with rocks...then living this daily with them and referring back to it
#122edchat
Q3 Fire up the DeLorean! We’re off to the year 2122. What can you do today to make sure students are FUTURE ready? Share a lesson or activity of yours that had impact that will last well into the future. #122edchat
A4: Flex seating. Classrooms that look more like a coffee shop than a school. That's the reason why you can stay there all day. Why wouldn't we want to offer that same experience to our Ss? I'd be excited to learn if I liked where I was sitting. The little things. #122edchat
A4: The class of the future allows the Ss choices. In our Life Skills classes we have flexible seating that allows students freedom of where to work. This year we also implemented a Ss workboard where Ss can decide what they would like to work on for that center. #122edchat
A4: The tools we will use haven't even been developed yet, but the environmental will be comfortable, flexible, and facilitate communication and collaboration. #122EdChat
A4: Flexible seating, multiple stations for hands-on learning, tech-focused AND tech-free lessons, students taking the lead. That is the ultimate dream! #122edchat
A4 I think we'll see more of #AI & #ARVRinEdu. Also #MR (mixed reality). It is already here, it will just become more seamless and integrated. Hopefully, it will get to student creation in this area of tech to get to deeper learning. #122edchathttps://t.co/wd3yT6dmmQ
A3: Make sure they know the importance of being empathetic and kind to each other. The lesson would be when we worked on that community service project. #122edchat
A3 In my former life I was a business teacher, and former students always would tell me how useful the classes were. They loved and learned from the Virtual Business suite of programs from @knowledgematters . The personal finance simulation was especially powerful! #122edchat
A1: My advice would be to really think about the art and science of teaching - it's not so much about what you do (just stick to the standards) but HOW you do it that really matters.#122edchat
I carved out 15 minutes in ELA for independent reading...wide reading and choice reading.... gave up a lot to do that but I do not regret the fact that most of my students have read more this year than they ever have. #122edchat
Right now we are doin g a shark Tank. Students problem solving and working toward solutions and presenting those to an audience! I hope this will making a mark! #EDL577UM#UMedTech#122edchat
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
A4: Technology everywhere. Students learning at different paces. I see a chaos, but a good chaos. The kind of chaos we all envision when students are engaged into their work. I would like to think that I'm prepared because of my ambition. #122edchat
A4: The classroom of the future... AHH!!!! It needs to be equipped with ways for students to CONNECT globally to become world citizens. Also, students must be able to have access to multiple info outlets #122edchat
A4- The classroom of the future is full of wonderful tech tools. I think I may need a little PD to become equipped myself, but I do think I can do it. I also think the class of the future still needs some OLD school pieces to it as well. #122EdChat
#122edchat tbh, I’m getting there and trying to take people with me. Ongoing battle, I think the walls might be bare, but the web would be filled with student work!!!
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
A3) In my classroom I do a lot of daily lessons that involve presenting in some way their by making my students more prepared to share, discuss, and present in front of others. We have also used technology to enhance this and develop it #122edchat
4) I imagine students walking into their learning spaces and writing or projecting their anticipated learning objectives for the day on the board, not reading what the teacher expects "Students will be able to..." #122edchat
A4: I am learning every day and I will ROCK whatever comes my way. My future classroom will contain students from all over the world in a virtual environment. #122edchat
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
A3: teach them tools that they will use in the future. My ss researched their own info on energy sources and sold their energy sources to each other! Gathering info, evaluating sources, organizing info and presenting. #122edchat
And it is still changing so rapidly. Important to adapt. The only thing constant is change. Imagine how much different it will look only a year or two from now. #122edchat
A4: Maybe it is like hoping for hover cars by 2020, but I am hoping for no grades. Instead, when students demonstrate mastery they move on to the next stage of learning. This learning is not a million worksheets, but instead allowing students to innovate! #122edchat
A4. I would love the classroom if the future not to be.a room or even a building but utilize the community and large open spaces (Google headquarter like) #122edchat
A3: As a Principal, making sure students are Future Ready means teaching lessons on resiliency, communicating properly and overcoming challenges. The best lessons come from learning from mistakes. Students are going to need to think, analyze and defend their ideas. #122edchat
A3: I try to create experiences for collaboration and creativity - I’m trying to be better with helping Ss find their passions and interests. Throughout the year I’ve had Ss keep a blog for reflecting, I ’m in the middl of an empowerment lesson on the renaissance. #122edchat
A4: People have constantly predicted that the future was going to change school. The reality is that nothing beats kids coming together to learn. There will always be a space where they collaborate, question, and create. The tools to do so will change. #122edchat
A4: im in no way prepared with the tools of the future because those tools probably don’t exist yet. All I can do is be prepared to learn and integrate them in innovative and creative ways for the kiddos! #EDL577UM#UMedTech#122edchat
A4: Flexible space, to adapt to what you and your Ss need. Items to make and prototype and experiment with. Devices to allow collaboration, research and connecting with the world. #122edchat
A4: The classroom of the future... AHH!!!! It needs to be equipped with ways for students to CONNECT globally to become world citizens. Also, students must be able to have access to multiple info outlets #122edchat
A2: I'm not teaching in the classroom on a daily basis but as I heard at #WGEDD - stop thinking about 21st century skills and just do it - 4 Cs - we are 18 years in to the 21st century. #122edchat
A3. Doing a kindness project for someone in the school, is one of the most important lessons! Our Ss learn compassion, empathy, sharing ideas, expressive creativity. #122edchat
A4: Collaboration with purpose, creativity matched to the kids’ personal taste, creative thinking, choice for the students, and flexible seating. #122EdChat
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
A4: Small, close-knit, self-directed, inquiry-based, project-driven, authentic, tolerant, & loving. Not some dystopian future where students are drilled with trivial knowledge, harsh discipline, and tracked at their every move...oh wait. #122edchat
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
A4 I imagine it kind of like what tech companies have. Open spaces for collaboration, and 1-1 devices. Not all tech focused, but tech infused. #122edchat
A4) I imagine a lot more tech based learning. Students solving their own problesm and connecting with a global stage. This has already started happening in some classrooms and I see it expanding rapidly. #122edchat
A4: a future classroom has no borders! There is no division of learning between Ss across the nation/world - collaboration, empathy, real-time experiences to enhance knowledge while utilizing higher order thinking!! #122edchat
A4 The classroom of the future looks like education through civic action. Math, the arts, tech ed—it can all be harnessed to make our world a better place and kids have phenomenal ideas about how to do this. I may not have all the tools, but I am up to learn. #122edchat
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
A5- I think assessment need to be more authentic. Less wrote memorization more hands on. Feedback needs to be almost immediate and we need to show the Ss how to fix their mistakes. Assessment needs to be meaningful. #122edchat
Q5 Regress to assess. Think BACK to how assessment was used in your educational journey. How can we improve assessments for the students of today and the future? #122edchat
I notice that too. We are going 1:1 next year, but I have made it clear that does not mean my students will spend the entire 86 minute block in front of a laptop. #122edchat
A3: Any lesson that incorporates critical thinking, writing, reading, technology and presentation skills is a win. If you go cross-curricular with it, that is an even bigger win! I am working to expand a current lesson into a cross-curricular event next year. Excited! #122edchat
A4: Classrooms of the future look like Ss collaborating, researching, and creating. They are moving around the room, and discussing what they’ve discovered with classmates and teacher. Ss are in the drivers seat, with their teacher as a guide. #122edchat
a4: my hope is that the classroom of the future looks caught up with the "today" of the future - funding that allows schools to keep up with the times with their technology and textbooks, but also with QUALITY PD to keep Ts on top of their game always #122edchat
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
a4p2: ... for instance, many of my daughter's classes (she is in 8th grade) have to have a BYOD policy because they don't have enough tech for Ss to learn on. If we want kids comfy w/the tech of tomorrow WE need to provide it! #122edchat
A4: Maybe it is like hoping for hover cars by 2020, but I am hoping for no grades. Instead, when students demonstrate mastery they move on to the next stage of learning. This learning is not a million worksheets, but instead allowing students to innovate! #122edchat
A5 I think we can improve assessments by making them more authentic and offering variety or ways to demonstrate learning. We can also improve it by focusing less on grading & more on feedback. Things like @peergrade can help! Maybe retakes & redos can actually help! #122edchat
A5: One way to improve assessments is to provide Aa with multiple modes to share their knowledge. In our class, we give Ss options on how to be assessed. Ss can type, voice record, draw, or create a video. Apps like @seesaw and @classkick truly change how we asses Ss. #122edchat
A5: No more multiple choice regurgitation of content! Practical application of ideas, problem based questioning, even kinesthetic, “show me” lab-style assessments. #122edchat
A5: Assessment needs to be formative and INFORMATIVE for student growth to occur. Too often we make it all or nothing. If you lose, game over. Not cool. Again, why Ss lose interest in school. When they game, they try again and learn from their mistakes until they win. #122edchat
A4 I think some kids will stay home & Skype in, learning spaces will be modular with walls as mobile dividers, seating is flexible, spaces & instruction will be individualized & flexible.Teachers will have to be flexible too….or do we even need classrooms at all? #122edchat
A4:Less compartmentalizing of learning, Ss and Ts moving around open spaces more flexibly, Ss taking the lead, Ts facilitating multiple learning opportunities #122edchat
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
A3: The biggest change is coming with competence in and access to technology, that should be a huge consideration in planning. What remains the same are the relationships #122edchat#UMEdTech
Q3 Fire up the DeLorean! We’re off to the year 2122. What can you do today to make sure students are FUTURE ready? Share a lesson or activity of yours that had impact that will last well into the future. #122edchat
Q5 Regress to assess. Think BACK to how assessment was used in your educational journey. How can we improve assessments for the students of today and the future? #122edchat
A4: it’s a sure thing that tech will be a part of the classroom experience in increasing amounts, we’ve got to stay current and be trained! #UMEdTech#122edchat
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
A5: More conversation. More opportunity to show learning, mastery and questions in a format best suited for the Ss. I would love to see value put on Q's the students have, rather than the ones they can answer. #122edchat
Sorry, wife is callling for our nightly walk. Love the great questions. Staring a new chat on Sunday. Would love to have each of you. #122edchat#LastingLearning
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
A5: My research surrounds assessment and what most don't know is there are diff. audiences for the assessment we do. 1 thing to ALWAYS remember... 1 assessment does NOT tell us the whole child! I would love to go back and PREACH THIS! #122edchat
A5 High pressure, timed tests. Used to make me really anxious. Still does. Unfortunately still used frequently. We need more focus on learning, less on scores/grades. #122edchat
A4: The classroom of the future is collaborative and goes beyond four walls to incorporate every student's interests in a cross-curricular manner. #122edchat
A4: a classroom of the future has makerspaces, engaged students collaborating, problem solving, and creating - many different tasks taking place. #122edchat
Q5 Regress to assess. Think BACK to how assessment was used in your educational journey. How can we improve assessments for the students of today and the future? #122edchat
Q5 Regress to assess. Think BACK to how assessment was used in your educational journey. How can we improve assessments for the students of today and the future? #122edchat
A5: I would say make assessments more hands on. Or at least take the insane sit and stare at a screen for hours away. Assessments can be more engaging, it’s the effort to make it better that is the challenge for teachers. Accept the challenge folks! #EDL577UM#UMedTech#122edchat
I definitely agree that there are some enduring conditions that the future shouldn't touch. Over the course of my career, I have seen more and more schools look to create spaces for collaboration, inquiry and creativity. That's change I can get behind! #122edchat
A4: People have constantly predicted that the future was going to change school. The reality is that nothing beats kids coming together to learn. There will always be a space where they collaborate, question, and create. The tools to do so will change. #122edchat
A5- 100% agree with @RealMrsBentley...Are assessments meaningful and preparing students for careers or are they just regurgitating info to us? #122edchat
A5 Moving towards a gradeless, portfolio/competency/feedback system. Learning should not be competitive (if that's the only incentive or goal, what does that say?) Frequent reflections, feedback from T, and tracking one's own learning (e.g. @Seesaw), and sharing. #122edchat
A4: The classroom of the future (or even better, now!) should look like a place where creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communicating can occur. Cozier, more flexible, & lots of ways to show your learning and the materials to do it! #122edchat
A5: make standards based assessments by listing concepts or standards. Put a 0-4 scale whether they can do each concept, based on multiple and diff kinds of assessments. That provides a transparent view of what ss know and don’t know. #122edchat
Q5 Regress to assess. Think BACK to how assessment was used in your educational journey. How can we improve assessments for the students of today and the future? #122edchat
A4 The classroom of the future is student-centered. Flexible seating, technology, choices about how to represent their learning in every classroom. The teacher is more of a coach. #122edchat
A5 I like how some schools are shifting towards a portfolio model of work. Definitely more challenging to implement, but I think the classrooms of the future need a holistic way to measure Ss outcomes while still being able to target where Ss need additional support #122edchat
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
After a decade of serious computer use myself, I have carpal tunnels and tennis elbow...wondering how many kids will have these issues too...#122edchat
A5: My research surrounds assessment and what most don't know is there are diff. audiences for the assessment we do. 1 thing to ALWAYS remember... 1 assessment does NOT tell us the whole child! I would love to go back and PREACH THIS! #122edchat
A4. Classroom of the future is an outside STEM space. An open pavillion where equipment can be locked up. Ss have the natural habitat and surroundings to utilize in learning! #122edchat
A5: voice and choice. Ask them how best they learn and show their learning and go that direction. Even a little at a time. Change your practice 5% a year if that is all you can do #122edchat
Q5 Regress to assess. Think BACK to how assessment was used in your educational journey. How can we improve assessments for the students of today and the future? #122edchat
A5: Too often today, assessments are a measuring stick that ranks students or turns them into a number. It sanctions failure instead of using it as a teachable moment. What we should use assessment for is to help Ss understand where they are & where to go from there. #122edchat
We just gotta make assessments MEANINGFUL! I don’t know what that looks like, but can’t we measure success AND give ourselves data with meaning? #122edchat
Q5 Regress to assess. Think BACK to how assessment was used in your educational journey. How can we improve assessments for the students of today and the future? #122edchat
Outro/Bonus: If there was a Back to the Future Edu, who in your PLN would play Marty McFly and who would play Doc and WHY? Tag them and invite to next week’s #122edchat with host @MrWawczak.
A5) Make Assessment more open and allow for assessment that show depth not only surface.......but might be easy to grade (dreams)....also I feel like students are tested too much and need other assesments to show learning #122edchat
This has been SO MUCH FUN!!!!! I loved chatting with ALL OF YOU!!! I hope you can join IN next week with @MrWawczak HOSTS #122edchat YAY!!!! Now, to look back in the past at all these AMAZING tweets!!!! @m_drez@megan_hacholski@_on11
A3 any tasks that require critical thinking & problem-solving will be huge for them in the future! Finding creative solutions & being able to communicate your ideas& listen to the ideas of others. Being able to reason look at situations from other peoples perspective!#122edchat
BONUS: Definitely @MrPStrunk and @megan_hacholski. Both inspire me beyond what they will ever comprehend. Two warriors in the field of education that are constantly striving to make life better for their students EVERY SINGLE DAY. #122edchat
I’m with Chris and @MrPStrunk. It hurts my heart to see so many Ss that get turned off to learning because of grades. Worse is seeing kids feel dumb because they work and don’t get the grade. Makes me sad. #122edchat
A5 I like how some schools are shifting towards a portfolio model of work. Definitely more challenging to implement, but I think the classrooms of the future need a holistic way to measure Ss outcomes while still being able to target where Ss need additional support #122edchat
A5: We should provide choice in our assessments. If assessments are truly about learning and not about a grade, let students be able to demonstrate mastery of a standard in any way that they can that capitalizes on their strengths. #122edchat
A5: Make assessments tools for growth instead of punishments or rewards. Students should be able to use feedback as ways to grow and should not feel punished when they don't do as well as they feel they should. Differentiate assessments as well! #122edchat

A5: I've always been a good test taker, but I know that doesn't hold true for everyone. So we need options. Can they draw it? Sing it? Is there some other way to prove efficiency in the important skill that doesn't FEEL so high stakes? I'd love to get to that point #122edchat
Q5 Regress to assess. Think BACK to how assessment was used in your educational journey. How can we improve assessments for the students of today and the future? #122edchat
A6: Without a doubt, @_on11 IS Doc Brown. I feel like @mrs_norkus247 would be a great Marty McFly and @This_Is_Mr_K (when he finally returns to Twitter) could play a mean Biff. #122edchat
Thank you everyone for joining #122edchat tonight! We hope you learned from the past and enjoy the future. Buckle up! Thanks @CRCarter313 for co-piloting the DeLorean tonight! Be sure to follow new educators you learned with. We hope you join in next week as @MrWawczak moderates!
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
A5 No more high value on low DOK/Blooms tasks for tests, i.e. memorizing vocab or google-able facts. Assessment needs to be performance/problem solving based > high level critical thinking skills applied to answer/solution > skills across subjects come into play #122edchat
A5: Just read about a T who always adds a blank sheet of paper to the end of her tests and tells the students that they can write about anything from the unit that she didn't ask about.
A5: Assess the progress and celebrate the growth no matter how small. I love the idea of 2/20 correct vs. 18/20 wrong! Allow Ss to show their learning in whatever way they want to demonstrate learning. Learning is what matters. NOT the ability to memorize. #122edchat
A5: By creating performance based assessments or projects where students must apply the knowledge and create a product that applied to the real world situation. No more scantrons (😳) or focus on multiple choice tests. #122edchat
A5 Moving towards a gradeless, portfolio/competency/feedback system. Learning should not be competitive (if that's the only incentive or goal, what does that say?) Frequent reflections, feedback from T, and tracking one's own learning (e.g. @Seesaw), and sharing. #122edchat
Bonus: No doubt @_on11 would be Doc for no other reason than I'm curious what Michael would look like with all that hair and @megan_hacholski would be driving our dolorean(sp?)! #122edchat
True. Hopefully we can make some changes at the classroom level. Change our own assessment strategies and help students go into the mandated tests more at ease. #122EdChat
Outro/Bonus: If there was a Back to the Future Edu, who in your PLN would play Marty McFly and who would play Doc and WHY? Tag them and invite to next week’s #122edchat with host @MrWawczak.
agreed! We are in late April and I still don't really know how to use my SMARTboard for anything more than a projector, and in general my school is pretty good at PD! I can't imagine what I wouldn't know if I'd been hired somewhere else!!! #122edchat
A5 student choice is huge and ownership of tasks and learning. Also giving specific timely feedback and teaching students how to apply feedback. Even working them up to the point that they can give each other feedback. #122edchat
A2: if I had the power to change anything, it would be to have the politicians take their hands out of teacher affairs...no APPR, less emphasis on test scores, hav me them find public education properly so we can do our jobs to the fullest potential. #122edchat
Q5 Regress to assess. Think BACK to how assessment was used in your educational journey. How can we improve assessments for the students of today and the future? #122edchat
A5: Focus more on feedback while designing the assessment. If it's formative, make sure it's designed to inFORM near-future learning and instruction. Feedback should be student-focused and quick. If not, redesign it. #122edchat
Q5 Regress to assess. Think BACK to how assessment was used in your educational journey. How can we improve assessments for the students of today and the future? #122edchat
Wouldn't our profession be better off, too, if we did away with traditional evaluations and just focused on reflections, feedback, and tracking of our own learning?? #122edchat
A5 Moving towards a gradeless, portfolio/competency/feedback system. Learning should not be competitive (if that's the only incentive or goal, what does that say?) Frequent reflections, feedback from T, and tracking one's own learning (e.g. @Seesaw), and sharing. #122edchat

A1: Not every day is going to be the best day ever. Savor the good days, identify the goods and the bads, and strive to make every day better than the last. #122edchat
Q1 Keep the best and forget the rest. If you could travel back in time in your education journey, what advice would you give your younger self? #122edchat
A5. Assessments need to be done creatively, in different ways, which allows Ss to utilize their skills and either solve the problem or utilize the data to show proof of learning in groups, etc. #122edchat
A3: I think exposing my Ss to as much technology as possible has made a huge difference . They find what works best for them to create, problem solve, and communicate. They are learning coding and robotics, skills that some are hoping to develop more as they move on.#122edchat
Q2 You now have the POWER to go back in time. What would you tamper with in education's past to alter the course for the future of education? #122edchat
BONUS: I'm pretty sure @ElizabethSpano would play Marty McFly (b'cuz she wears sneakers to work AND b'cuz after today she wishes she could go BACK) and @JulieGB7 would be Doc (b'cuz she always has a new plan!) #122edchat
A4: classrooms in the future will have no walls...we will connect and learn daily with others near and far. Information will be able to be retrieved faster and shared just as quick. Teachers will facilitate more than teach. #122EdChat

Do you wonder though if even a poor assessment if given consistently over time can still in some minor way shed some light on the trajectory of a child? #122edchat
A3: I had my sociology students identify a societal problem and plan out a research study, putting research and ethics into a real-world perspective, critically thinking to problem solve! #122edchat
Q3 Fire up the DeLorean! We’re off to the year 2122. What can you do today to make sure students are FUTURE ready? Share a lesson or activity of yours that had impact that will last well into the future. #122edchat
A1: Be confident! #122EdChat Get organized. Connect with others that share your passion for learning and teaching. Don’t feel required to keep your network within four walls.
Q1 Keep the best and forget the rest. If you could travel back in time in your education journey, what advice would you give your younger self? #122edchat
A4: Working in a school that just went 1:1 with laptops, the tech needs to be advancing education, not improving. More flipped classrooms are awesome, and I’m working towards being totally equipped! #122edchat
Q4 Marty McFly rocked a hoverboard and self lacing sneakers. What does the classroom of the future look like to you and are you prepared/equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in this environment? #122edchat
#122edchat A3 Best lesson is to get kids thinking about the world they will be part of in the future. The creation of May 9th and getting the kids thinking about 2030 is as powerful as it gets.
A3: @thrively to determine Ss strengths. Our GRT @khoggardGRT worked with upper grade Ss to help them use this knowledge when collaborating with others. Ss need to find what they’re passionate about in order to plan their future. #122edchat#LoveLiteracyLearning
#122edchat A4 Technology, student leading learning, flipped classrooms, online learning session. Flexibility, less testing more student output. Am I ready I say bring it on.
A4: classrooms of the future have technology that allow Ss to “visit” places & people from the past and present. Experiments become realistic, activities are hands-on and “experts” are holograms that are present in the room. #122EdChat#LoveLiteracyLearning
#122edchat
A1: be prepared! I had so much anxiety in my early years, I had nightmares about school. Also, know that it's OK to dream about school! It stressed me out until I reallised that half my life is spent there, so of course I'll dream about it!
