Good morning all! About to dock back in #Miami and excited to have cell signal again! Hopped on twitter to see #satchat going on:-) happy Saturday everyone!
Leading change in schools is complex work, but it doesn't have to be complicated. One big step is in providing frequent yet quality feedback. A big part of "quality" is demonstrated through candor & compassion. #candorandcompassion#satchathttps://t.co/FhWK84xcwX

It's so great to kick off 2019 with our PLN. Lots of regulars and some new people on the chat. Very exciting
I'm Scott, proud superintendent of @WeAreHTSD and the co-founder of #satchat
Let's start chatting on Positive School Climate
A1: I have an expectation of visibility, support and availability. I want to be involved with the students and the staff, both in the school and in the community. #SatChat
Q1: School climate involves all the students and adults in a school. What are your expectations of yourself and other professional educators when it comes to creating, maintaining and/or improving school climate in your school? #satchat
Q1: School climate involves all the students and adults in a school. What are your expectations of yourself and other professional educators when it comes to creating, maintaining and/or improving school climate in your school? #satchat
As someone who yesterday just enrolled his kids in a new elementary and middle school, I have a lot of positives to share about starting off on the right foot! #satchat
Good morning, #satchat, Michaele, Kindergarten teacher in Kansas whose newly adopted cat Tish-Tish is making it difficult to tweet this morning! #kittycuddles#notcomplaining
One often overlook way is to make sure teachers have flexibility and can include their passions in the classroom. It’s contagious and will change the entire school climate. https://t.co/E78rYmmiAu#satchat
QUESTION 1
Q1: School climate involves all the students and adults in a school. What are your expectations of yourself and other professional educators when it comes to creating, maintaining and/or improving school climate in your school? #satchat
A1: Climate & culture are joined at the hip...the lifeblood of any organization & what sets the tone for whether you continually improve to a truly SHARED vision of excellence for all or remain fixed to the hidden agendas of the status quo & mediocrity. #satchat#CultureMatters
A1: I expect everyone to recognize that we all have a role in creating, maintaining, and improving school climate. It takes all of us working together and intentionally to establish a positive school climate. #satchat
A1: I expect that every day I walk into the building, I am truly happy to be there, that I am warm and friendly, and greeting S's with a smile. #satchat
A1: the expectation is to NOT see students monolithically, which we tend to do. We often see them as one whole, which ignores certain parts of their identities and experiences. We also need to see each other as humans and individuals. #satchat
One often overlook way is to make sure teachers have flexibility and can include their passions in the classroom. It’s contagious and will change the entire school climate. https://t.co/E78rYmmiAu#satchat
A1 I think it's important to map out who you are and what you do in your school--schools are very busy places, and sometimes too-big expectations can lead to less positivity, none of us can be all people in a school. #satchat
Good morning, #satchat, Michaele, Kindergarten teacher in Kansas whose newly adopted cat Tish-Tish is making it difficult to tweet this morning! #kittycuddles#notcomplaining
A1 Improving school climate according to whom? It’s easy to say “be kind” yet maintain toxic and inequitable systems. We can’t solve white supremacy, rape culture, the school-to-prison pipeline, or food insecurity with smiles and high fives. #satchat
A1: Connections! Interacting with students and other adults is an essential part of maintaining positive school climate. Something as simple as a “good morning” to ensure that everyone feels included. A united community will thrive! #satchat
A1- I find myself wanting to return to the days when I could identify the adults in the building because they dressed professionally. People in ripped jeans doesn't make it for me. #satchat
Q1: School climate involves all the students and adults in a school. What are your expectations of yourself and other professional educators when it comes to creating, maintaining and/or improving school climate in your school? #satchat
A1: We spend a third of our days in bed, and a third or more in school. It's our living and our lives. Every day we should ask ourselves:
Are we living a life worth living?
If we cannot answer (or dare not ask), then we should not be around children.
#satchat
Q1: School climate involves all the students and adults in a school. What are your expectations of yourself and other professional educators when it comes to creating, maintaining and/or improving school climate in your school? #satchat
This is really important -- the "robot mindset" forwarded by some leaders takes away teacher passion, talent, personality and creates a negative atmosphere. We have to allow T's to maximize their unique gifts to create a positive climate. #satchat
A1 Model, model, model. I try to leave my problems behind when I come through the door, or leave my office. Smile, high-five and spread positivity, even on the days when it's difficult. Positive attitudes spread.
#satchat
A1 School climate involves everyone in the school building, however relationships really matter and the interactions between the adults and students on a daily basis. #Satchat
Such an important connection to recognize! And culture is rooted in the routines & rituals we may not even recognize. Changing even one of those habitual practices can have such positive ripple effects #satchat
Great support coming from all sides for Border Security (including Wall) on our very dangerous Southern Border. Teams negotiating this weekend! Washington Post and NBC reporting of events, including Fake sources, has been very inaccurate (to put it mildly)!
A1: creating and maintaining school culture is about relationships. Time needs to be given and set aside to develop and maintain these relationships. #workinprogress#satchat
A1: To be REAL! I've been reading @TaraMartinEDU book Be REAL #REALedu and it has me really wanting to focus on being Relatable, Exposing a little vulnerability, being approachable & learning through life. Lead by example, just be you! #satchat
Q1: School climate involves all the students and adults in a school. What are your expectations of yourself and other professional educators when it comes to creating, maintaining and/or improving school climate in your school? #satchat
A1: I identify like-minded colleagues (teachers or admin) and connect with them to foster an environment that good for all steak holders.
I'm thankful for ppl like @BowTieJoe23@NBHSZebras#satchat
The thing about #satchat that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
A1 My students always point out that I rarely smile yet I dont think they would say there isnt a positive environment in my clssrm. I think it starts w/recgnizing that I teach middle school kids & allowing them to be middle school kids. Also, Im able to laugh at myself. #satchat
A1. Respect, active listening, shared leadership, and collegial trust. As a school leader we used lots of protocols with staff to help engender this behavior among each other. lots of modeling too when it comes to showing these to Ss & parents. #SatChat
#satchat Yes, I agree--there seems to be a thread of thought about personalization--allowing people to be who they are and working to maximize individual's strengths in the learning community. This is positive.
#satchat any discussions on how you should keep politics, hate, and dangerous situations encouraging kids to violence, murder, or suicide out of schools?
A1: T's have to work together. This means extending professional courtesy and supporting each other, even when it might intrude on our individual wants. #satchat
A1: I expect that we treat our students&each other with respect, model expectations for students, and are consistent and clear in what we expect. Also, I think we need to show commitment to our schools and students by authentically supporting school programs/initiatives #satchat
Q1: School climate involves all the students and adults in a school. What are your expectations of yourself and other professional educators when it comes to creating, maintaining and/or improving school climate in your school? #satchat
100% of SCIENTIST Know Global Warming is REAL. MORON DONald Trump & GOP's Solution to Climate Change: Ban the Term. The US Department of Agriculture has forbidden the use of the words ‘Climate Change’ Say-No-Evil Policy, FIRE the SCIENTIST @cspanwj#ImpeachTheMF#TRE45ON#SatChat
A1: I believe that positive climate and culture comes from establishing an environment where all feel welcomed, respected, and valued. Transparency, communication, and collaboration are key elements to building that foundation. #Satchat
A1. I must:
1) model positivity, kindness
2) provide ways for staff to connect and laugh
3) relationships are our foundation
4) help students find their passions and provide ways for them to lead
We need to make every day amazing and it starts with the leaders
#satchat
A1 School culture begins with leadership. There is a quote that says something like ‘the most important indicator of growth in a bldg is the relationships between the adults’. Always love a good theme as it helps set a positive culture #satchat
I like this. I’ll also confess I try and connect with colleagues who are not like minded to make sure I’m considering diverse perspectives. I want to embrace cognitive dissonance; not avoid it. #satchAt
#satchat Because I learn, borrow and adopt so much from colleagues, I know how important it is that I contribute in kind. Reciprocal relationships improve the school climate, making it safe for everyone to share, grow & be supported.
Q1: School climate involves all the students and adults in a school. What are your expectations of yourself and other professional educators when it comes to creating, maintaining and/or improving school climate in your school? #satchat
Indeed! This is why having a culture of constant self and peer reflection - done in a positive, respectful, and transparent manner - is key to building a positive school culture & climate. And yes, that involves students as well! #satchat
A1 I think we can all work harder to advocate for good structures in buildings that create opportunities for genuine, positive collaboration. Sometimes building structures obstruct good collaboration. #satchat
A1: My expectation of the adults in a school is that they need to be authentic in caring about all students and their success, both in and out of school. That caring needs to be clear and sincere. If they can't/don't/won't try, they need to find a new profession. #satchat
A1: Commit to positive interactions. We can disagree, and it we can do that constructively (without denigrating) we can make space for our unique passions while still working toward shared goals #satchat
A1 I expect myself to be kind, respectful, approachable and positive and expect others to do the same. If you start there it sets a good tone for a good climate. #satchat@ScottRRocco@wkrakower@TheBradCurrie
Q1: School climate involves all the students and adults in a school. What are your expectations of yourself and other professional educators when it comes to creating, maintaining and/or improving school climate in your school? #satchat
A1 All stakeholders in a school culture are contributors. Leaders must first establish a foundation in which the culture rests. Wellbeing creates a culture & the conditions where we strive to ensure everyone is thriving. That is a precondition for success. #satchat
We must hold each other accountable for teaching & learning in a space that is as inclusive and equitable as possible. Root out racism & sexism, adopt gender-neutral pronouns, amplify marginalized voices, engage in courageous conversations, get uncomfortable, listen.
#satchat
Q1: School climate involves all the students and adults in a school. What are your expectations of yourself and other professional educators when it comes to creating, maintaining and/or improving school climate in your school? #satchat
#satchat any discussions on how you should keep politics, hate, and dangerous situations encouraging kids to violence, murder, or suicide out of schools? How about the Racism from educators who many times use Race or being poor as the reason children can't learn?
A1 Agree--our fairly recent move to a team approach for fifth grade has put us in a great position to model collaboration, support, positivity-it's been a natural way to create a more positive culture. I love it! #satchat
Q1: School climate involves all the students and adults in a school. What are your expectations of yourself and other professional educators when it comes to creating, maintaining and/or improving school climate in your school? #satchat
A1. Respect, active listening, shared leadership, and collegial trust. As a school leader we used lots of protocols with staff to help engender this behavior among each other. lots of modeling too when it comes to showing these to Ss & parents. #SatChat
A1 #satchat I think kids need to see teachers laugh. We need to look like we love to be at work. It’s not a slog! It sends the message that school is a positive and productive place to be.
A1: We are charged with the care and education of young people, looking at the good and focusing on what’s right and good, what’s working well, is a start 😊 #satchat
I agree, let's change some minds! Dropping a statement like, "oh i really like him" in the middle of a complaint session about a student... changes the conversation #satchat
In reply to
@3_DLeadership, @mrnesi, @BowTieJoe23, @NBHSZebras
A1) recognizing that we are on the same team! Everyone has a role to play in making the culture work, but it starts from the top! Leadership needs to walk the talk #Satchat
A1 I agree. Sincerity, honesty, and truthfulness really matters--superficial kindness and positivity w/o being honest enough to tackle the touch issues actually serves to create a more negative environment. #satchat
I’m reflecting on where anger as an emotion fits into a positivity culture. Seems like many of us would put anger as a block to positivity culture. Not sure that is real and authentic. #satchat
A1 In school, I expect the best from myself 1st & then from fellow staff. In order to achieve that goal, I must be willing to pitch in when someone asks for help. Sometimes that means giving up a prep in order for a co-worker to go home to care for their sick child #satchat
1A) Many times we "assume" especially when it comes to this topic. We automatically "expect" certain things. Is what we are assuming always fully understood by staff? Might we need to be much more intentional in what we expect as a collaborative school planning team? #satchat
A1: We are professional educators. I expect from myself and my colleagues that we treat people with respect, have respectful conversations, be honest and ALWAYS do what is right for our students. If our actions don't do that then... don't do that!
#satchat
Q1. We teach our students citizenship skills and what it means to be part of a community. It’s important for the adults in a school to identify what that means/looks like for us as well. #satchat
A1 to be on the same page, ALL staff and ALL students. Climate an culture is established and maintained when we all have the same vision for our schools. Too often I see different members of a school pulling in different directions. @ScottRRocco#satchat
A1 I want to see out there and teach by example. I believe every member, including the student need to feel and believe that their actions make a difference and praising more of what we want to see. Kindness, positivity and helping your fellow man/woman. #satchat
Helpful pages for this #satchat See: Education World: Building School Community, Culture, and Climate on Our School Culture https://t.co/W1riLyqrQp Important to build community in classes and school. Involve students and staff. https://t.co/1j9MuSk3FT Happy Healthy 2019
A2: I ask for feedback with surveys, but I find the best way to listen is having individual conversations with people whenever possible, just asking questions and listening to their answers. #SatChat
A2: the library door is always open to everyone. We are in the business of helping you achieve your teaching and learning goals. We have everyone's back. #satchat
We have to dissect the anger rather than ignore it. For example in some schools some educators have far more after hours work than others, this can translate to anger--that needs to be dissected and improved upon to remedy situation. #satchat
A1 When all members within a school culture are thriving then they use their unique strengths to achieve measurable goals and outcomes. Impactful leaders create a culture where leaders identify and aim the strengths of self and others towards goals #satchat
A2. It starts in the classroom. Students always sit in small collaborative groups to build community. I give surveys throughout year about concerns and suggestions. Students share these with each other. I take to admin. #satchat
A1: Building and nurturing positive relationships is so important to positive climate. Also setting clear expectations and being transparent is also so important. #satchat
A2: Mostly through committees and student groups. We really encourage Ss to get involved in the school community and share their voice. We have also used surveys and class meetings to give everyone a voice #satchat
#satchat any discussions on how you should keep politics, dangerous situations encouraging kids to violence, marching them in the streets, for politicians and Hw stars whose kids are never marching b/c they use Educators to get other kids to march? is profits involved?
A2 We started an ESCape committee (Emotional Social Committee) Teachers has input for student and staff norms. Students starred in videos to set expectations. #Satchat
Allowing toxic and inequitable systems is the exact opposite of being kind and if we are knowingly allowing those systems to continue or thrive, then the smiles and high fives are not actually acts of kindness at all. #satchat
Also sometimes anger can come from mistreatment due to underlying prejudices, long held discriminatory practices, poor leadership. . .again don't ignore anger, dissect it, find its roots and get rid of it the right way. #satchat
A2: "Voice" comes through small group sessions such as PLCs, department meetings, etc....where Ts feel safe to share their true thoughts, ideas, opinions...and to take risks #satchat
A2: Listen, ask for feedback & act on positive changes when they are suggested. Be approachable, especially as admin. so T's, P's & S's will actually tell you when they are feeling strongly about things that could be better. #satchat
A2: Providing opportunity for two way communication is critical- we host parent forums, faculty meetings, admin attend common planning times weekly, we have student advocates, we welcome the community into the schools. #Satchat
A2: establish a school improvement team that has representation from all stakeholders and allow people to communicate honesty and openly. It is amazing how much the collective group can accomplish #satchat
A2: this is an interesting ? to me. I’d argue the climate of a building is already determined, Whether people have voices or not. The question is how do you listen to voices to move the culture in a direction that allows for all to be authentic, as opposed to some. #satchat
A2: Two essential elements of a positive school climate/culture (IMO) are shared/living vision of excellence & a distributed leadership model where every voice - including student voice - matters. Enables the best ideas to float to the top, regardless of title/role/age. #Satchat
A2 #satchat In my district a lot of people are on twitter and we all follow each other. It’s great to hear so many voices and see people celebrating successes in words and photos! From the arts to athletics.
A1 Creating good, sufficient time for teamwork helps to build positive professional relationships--the teamwork must connect to meaningful work and not be contrived or superficial to get best results. #satchat
So true, and perhaps equally so of positive reactions. Either way, we have to honestly understand the root causes of how people responds to issues in order to leverage the positivity #satchat
A2: Developing a system that allows for contribution of all stakeholders - P’s, T’s, S’s, custodians, cafe workers, paras, everyone... in form of committees, forums, coffee gatherings #satchat
QUESTION #2 #satchat
Q2: How do you provide opportunities for all stakeholders to have a voice in determining the school climate of a building? #satchat
A little late this AM! A1: Helping all members of the school feel included and welcome w/ access to info about the school is what we strive to do at the American School of Guatemala. #SatChat
A1 part 2 One more thing I will say is when schools do the school culture well, you can feel it immediately when you enter the bldg. #satchat#AintNothingLikeIt
I’m also reflecting on what our visions of a “positive” school culture are. I’m thinking we may all have different visions in our head of what that looks like #satchat
A2: individual/informal conversations. Being accessible. Surveys. Inviting teachers/students/parents to be part of climate committees. Working through improvements together. #satchat
A2 When PLCs are authentic, they can be used a vital vehicles for positivity, however, at times, PLCs and similar groups can be contrived and superficial which actually has an opposite effect. #satchat
A2: with block scheduling Ss can have days that are packed and days that free time. Ss will come into my classroom often to get centered when stressed to just talk & hang out. I may have lots to do but this sense of community is more important to me #satchat
A2. We try to provide staff ways to help lead PD and make decisions within our building; we also engage our parents and want our kids to lead in different ways; this creates a learning community focused on the kids and “All In” approach #satchat
A2: We work together to create a culture where students can feel safe to take risks in learning and we nurture relationships with all stakeholders 😊 #satchat
A2: provide opportunities and transparency to share thoughts and initiatives. As the first question stated, it is something we must ALL be doing together #satchat
A2 Have an open door and an open ear. Provide stakeholders multiple opportunities and avenues to voice their input and be heard and then really and authentically listen to them. Not just hear, but listen. #satchat@wkrakower@TheBradCurrie@ScottRRocco
A2 Or select a few meaningful goals and look for feedback in those areas--too much feedback can sometimes be overwhelming too--as in all things, there's a balance. #satchat
A2 Long ago in a district far away, we had stakeholder committees which met monthly. The committee sent requests to the school board; rotated attendance at school board meetings. Great vertical communication. #satchat
In my decade in education among four districts, I have encountered teachers who seem to greatly dislike both teaching and children, but I have also encountered teachers who care for their students as if they were their own offspring. The difference is clear as day! #satchat
A2: From surveying stakeholders to an open door policy, we make ourselves available & our goals and vision are clear, while keeping an open mind for others’ ideas. We also constantly review data to determine the climate needs of our school. It’s evolving and ongoing. #satchat
A1 As a school leader and teacher, I expect other educators to be respectful, caring, and thoughtful with each other and with our students. I need to model these characteristics and then provide opportunities for positive connections to develop. #satchat
So true! This can't be seen as a "check the box" activity however...it must have a true sense of transparency and openness, where all ideas are valued. They may not all be implemented, but at least they are all heard. That's powerful! #satchat
A2 You have students and teachers share ideas for themes/events. Everyone’s voice should be heard. Kids always have great ideas for improving morale! #satchat
This was always hard for me - I tended to ignore anger and hope it would disappear. But it generally doesn't - it grows. So now, I bite the bullet and deal with it which is usually easier than I expect and does restore a positive climate.
#satchat
A2) Provide opportunity to have stakeholders contribute through conversation and action (committees, edcamps, open door policy, etc.) This gets done through building relationships and making them know that they matter! #satchat
A2 I believe that creating a web of teams in a building can lead to better communication and a more positive culture. How those teams are created could differ dependent on a learning community's goals/needs. #satchat
The work is often shown in the local paper or the district newsletter. I believe we need to get better about sharing it with other buildings and committees. #Satchat
Q2 We use the support of Campaign Connect in which we create focus groups of students parents and teachers which will give us data to plan for our goals for the building. Out CC team also involves all of these stakeholders #satchat
#satchat Ours is a service-based community (military post), so volunteerism, "stepping up," helping and wanting to contribute to the mission of learning comes naturally to many of our stakeholders. Lots of communication & face to face contact supports involvement.
A2: I think surveys are a good idea in theory but I know that teachers are not always honest about how they feel@on surveys for fear of negative outcomes. Leading with your eyes open and having honest open conversations. Again building positive relationships. #satchat
A2 And along with surveys, we have to make time for face-to-face communication w/families, others throughout the year--at elementary the parent conferences, though time consuming, are essential. #satchat
A2. Discussion protocols w staff, small focus group discussions from each group, perceptions surveys. Use all that data to make actionable change. The key is making sure you access the traditionally shutout groups. #satchat
Empty platitudes are toxic. If we tell students “to be kind”, we need to make we are “kind” to them. Do we measure them w/unfair assessments? Do we isolate them when they misbehave? Do we hand out detentions bc they can’t sit still or when they question our authority? #satchat
Q3: One essential to positive school climate is the ability of stakeholders to have honest and open communication. What are the steps you use to create this in your school? #satchat
A2: Eavesdrop on the conversations of the students in the stands during a basketball game, in the seats during a play, in the lines during lunch.
They know. They talk. But they often do not (with good reason) trust.
#satchat
Q1: I expect to model positive behavior everyday/every moment with everyone regardless of negative circumstances or challenges. Choosing this attitude results in students feeling respected, safe & important. #satchat
For me, like-minded colleagues are those who want the very best for students and their families and all staff, even if we disagree on the steps to bring about the desired results. We can disagree on the process but have the same goal. #satchat
In reply to
@3_DLeadership, @mrnesi, @BowTieJoe23, @NBHSZebras
A2 We often try to “formalize” what we do in schools because it’s easier to manage. Culture is created formally and informally. Every interaction determines and creates the culture. How we treat each other. Leaders create the conditions for how that should happen #satchat
A3: I make sure I am available to have conversations. I also try to make a point to follow up on those conversations. Mid-year, I create appointment slots and give every teacher an opportunity to meet. #SatChat
A2 I believe that process is at the root of today's biggest problems and triumphs. To use good process is to welcome diverse voices, hear problem details, and work collaboratively towards creative solutions. #satchat
A2: we have had coffee chats, parent surveys, student surveys, multiple meetings with PTA, Boosters, etc. we have also worked to have a rep at each community/local government meeting covering the )8 square miles of our district! Powerful connections created by this. #satchat
Q3: One essential to positive school climate is the ability of stakeholders to have honest and open communication. What are the steps you use to create this in your school? #satchat
Our New Guidance Counselor has done a lot as well. She placed eyes around the school and has daily announcements that if you see something say something in regards to bullying and none school behaviors. #Satchat
A3 I think of the end of the movie Hoosiers where the team is upset w/coach for his plan for the final play. Earlier, the coach would have been mad, but he accepts it b/c they all have the same goal. The coach cant take it personally if the team thinks he's wrong #satchat
A3: One step we started, and are still developing consistency in, is the use of circles. T's who use these well have a culture of trust and honesty with S's. #satchat
Q2. This may be from #ResponsiveClassroom. Multi-age/discipline teams meet periodically to promote positive school culture. I think it could give stakeholders (Ss and Ts) a chance to discuss issues with people they don’t typically work with to gain new perspectives. #satchat
A2 Too often we're mired in old processes that don't result in better, more meaningful, transformative work. Instead we have to embrace new structures for growing together, doing good work. #satchat
Q3: One essential to positive school climate is the ability of stakeholders to have honest and open communication. What are the steps you use to create this in your school? #satchat
A2. Hello, Helen from NY jumping in! Use current avenues of communication: Teacher PD, Student Government, PTA Meetings to provide everyone with a voice. #satchat
A3: with my students, it's about building that trust that if I ask them a question and they give honest feedback, i will adapt... if we as teachers don't, they will learn the frustration of not having a voice. (I'm thinking admin should consider the same for teachers) #satchat
A3. Schedule two to five minute conversations with ALL staff to get their ideas and make a connection. You could ask them, "if you were principal, what would you like to change?" #satchat
In two weeks, our team will utilize the colleague circle approach to solve a problem of practice related to good scheduling. I am hoping this approach will lead to a better schedule for our students/team. #satchat
A2 we are using Prosocial to develop a community engaged in common values to best serve our students. #satchathttps://t.co/Mqu4VQyKO9 empowers staff to hold each other accountable and celebrate together
Many private schools build in the service. A Montessori school my children attended had a service or pay requirement. I did a lot of gardening then. @msommerville#satchat
#satchat Ours is a service-based community (military post), so volunteerism, "stepping up," helping and wanting to contribute to the mission of learning comes naturally to many of our stakeholders. Lots of communication & face to face contact supports involvement.
A1 Creating good, sufficient time for teamwork helps to build positive professional relationships--the teamwork must connect to meaningful work and not be contrived or superficial to get best results. #satchat
Yes! And that ALL will not simply occur without a true investment in time and space to build a shared vision of excellence and a culture of collaboration to get there! #satchat
A2 Invite feedback through various methods. Faculty meetings provide open forums for discussion and feedback. Non-evaluative interviews allow face-to-face conversations about school climate. Surveys of stakeholders can also help develop steps forward. #satchat
A3: For me, especially as a new director, it’s embracing and promoting dissent. When a staff member challenges me in a room, I see it as a gift. Following up afterwards to say- thank you; I need that feedback if I’m going to be a good leader for the department #satchat
A3: honest and open communication come from trusting collaborative relationships. A sharedresponsibility towards the collective good. We need to be provided opps to build & nurture those relationships. When they’re not provided, individuals should create& seek opps #satchat
A2: Working closely w/ parent volunteer, student leadership and alumni groups and incorporating. Their initiatives and feeeback also ensures that their voices shape our school’s culture. #satchat
A3: We try to encourage open, honest communication thru modeling it ourselves. We also provide as many communication channels as possible for stakeholders to communicate with the school mostly thru electronic methods, but value and encourage face to face as well #satchat
I have a couple of Qs in response to Q3: Is email a primary form of communication in your school? If so, do you respond to emails? How might it feel if someone sends a carefully constructed email and doesn't receive a response? What does this do to climate? #satchat
A2 Yes, and regular patterns of communication streamline and strengthen that communication. Try to keep the learning/teaching team up to date on what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen at all times. #satchat
A3: Share the mission and vision of your school, keep the “doors”open and invite input form the school community and those in the community surrounding the school, get people involved! 😊 #satchat
#satchat A2 cont: SITE Council, parent volunteers, board meetings, community volunteerism & business partnerships contribute to not only school climate, but neighborhood culture. Relationships spread.
A2 listening and turning voiced concerns, etc. into action is important. Otherwise it's like me offering my father-in-law to split the dinner check - empty offer 🙄#satchat
That is so true! When I think that my idea is authentically considered, even if it is not put into practice by my admin, I may not be happy, but I will respect the decision. It all starts with treating me like a professional #satchat
A3 Leaders can encourage open and honest communication by being open and honest. As bell hooks says in Teaching to Transgress: “I do not expect students to take any risks that I would not take, to share in any way that I would not share.” #satchat
A3: I believe that empowering people (staff, students, parents) to feel that their voice matters and providing an opportunity for them to use their voice is critical. People must trust leadership in order to feel comfortable speaking up. #Satchat
Q3: One essential to positive school climate is the ability of stakeholders to have honest and open communication. What are the steps you use to create this in your school? #satchat
A2: so I’ll throw this out there - what’s the point of diminishing return? Do we spend so much time gathering feedback from as many stakeholders that it slows decision making process? #satchat
And yet, when others get angry with us, we feel a certain way and turn it inward. This is the skillset I need to work on. How to center the person who is angry (with me) instead of my own feelings #satchat

You missed the point.
It isn't whataboutism. It's calling out hypocrisy.
Either someone gives a fuck about swearing or they don't, but calling one side out and not the other is complete bullshit.
#saturdaymorning#satchat
My problem with this argument: Its the same whataboutism that infuriates me as a Democrat when the GOP defends Trump. As in "but Obama..."
Trump should not do what he does.
As a separate thing? I don't like my representative calling a sitting President -- any President-- that.
A3: Working with our school climate committee to promote a culture of mutual respect & collaboration. We also have student groups where they tell us what’s working and where we need to grow. Incorporating their feedback has been integral in maintaining a positive climate #satchat
A3: Open communication will not occur without solid relationships built on mutual respect, trust, and transparency. Only then can the free & open exchange of ideas flow between colleagues who are committed to collective excellence and localized innovation for all. #satchat
A3. Open and honest communication starts with relationships - building trust thru seeing things from other perspectives, demonstrate empathy and compassion and always being there in the moment for the individual. #satchat
3A) For the adults, maybe think outside the box. Provide opportunities like an Escape Room/pizza night, Curling night so staff can get to know each other. Many of us know nothing about curling #satchat@clegleiter Bowling
Yes, the framework should be simple and "loose-tight" creating a stage for deep and meaningful teaching and learning that regularly evolves via reflection, assessment, analysis, and refinement/creation. #satchat
A2: I create opportunities for discussion when possible.
Could be during/after class with ICS Ts or during lunch with colleagues.
Even talking with ppl here provides ideas I can employee IRL.
#satchat
A2 I have an open door policy. Ss & Ts come to my office to voice concerns or to give me ideas. I take their concerns seriously and act on them when I can. We hold a monthly community coffee for Ps as well.
#satchat
What if they are an external processor? Some of us need to be able to talk it out. Other internal processors need space. How do we create an environment for both students to feel welcomed? #satchat

#satchat A3. I try to communicate face to face as much as possible. Email creates distance and causes frustration. It’s much easier to walk down the hall and talk.
Q3: One essential to positive school climate is the ability of stakeholders to have honest and open communication. What are the steps you use to create this in your school? #satchat
A2 Visit w/ bus drivers, custodians, food service folks. Make sure they hear your message of open door 4 feedback. Even if they don’t respond, people appreciate being reminded that you value their input ....when possible, act upon their suggestions. They will notice. #satchat
A3 So often we dismiss student voice--it's so crazy that we do this as they hold the answers we are looking for. We need to include student voice more in all that we do. Good thoughts, Florencia #satchat
A3 You need to build trust amongst everyone. This comes by being trustworthy. You also need people to know that their honesty won’t have negative repercussions or reprisals. #satchat@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower@ScottRRocco
Q3: One essential to positive school climate is the ability of stakeholders to have honest and open communication. What are the steps you use to create this in your school? #satchat
Parent from Connecticut joining in. A3) Stakeholders outside the school have a role in this. PTOs and others can set up means of communication that are monitored, such as Facebook groups, to assure they’re focused on positive purposes. #SatChat
Q3: One essential to positive school climate is the ability of stakeholders to have honest and open communication. What are the steps you use to create this in your school? #satchat
A3: be accessible, actively listen, make sure stakeholders know you’re taking their thoughts seriously and not just providing “lip service.” Your reaction to critique/disagreement is also so important. Keep an open mind and make people feel safe communicating concerns. #satchat
Q3: One essential to positive school climate is the ability of stakeholders to have honest and open communication. What are the steps you use to create this in your school? #satchat

I work in higher ed where email is the primary form of communication. Unfortunately, most people don't read or respond to email so it is very ineffective. #satchat
It can also be a problem of communication. I think it's incredibly hard to communicate in a way that's understood by everyone in a large community. One-on-one conversations can help to clear up misunderstandings.

Great example! This shared goal/vision/mission can't be overstated. It is the enabling factor that provides the true collective purpose of every member of a powerful learning organization. #satchat
They're not mutually exclusive.
And the chats on here are public, other folks can see them (and cringe as I sometimes do).
Every profession can learn from its neighbors; every profession has is clannish.

When you notice a student stumbling through a problem or concept, it's natural to want to jump in and help. But "resist the urge to rescue," says ASCD author @Robyn_Mindsteps. #satchathttps://t.co/RfKXOiIxcc
A2 Once I worked in a school where the principal had a weekly meeting w/new staff--that was a very empowering practice that elevated the sense of belonging for new people. #satchat
A3: Listen without trying to solve problems. Be empathetic. Acknowledge when you've made a mistake and do what you can to correct it. Speak up for those whose voices are being ignored. Encourage disagreement without disagreeableness. @patricklencioni has the right ideas! #satchat
Our most important stakeholders are our students. We have a robust & healthy network of Teacher-Advisories. We dedicate daily time in our schedule for us to meet & develop a strong community, in the hopes of ensuring each of our Ss has one trusted adult in the building. #satchat
Q3: One essential to positive school climate is the ability of stakeholders to have honest and open communication. What are the steps you use to create this in your school? #satchat
A3 Creating a positive feedback/communication culture is essential to a thriving community. Vulnerability must be valued and nurtured in order to receive and give feedback and communicate. When the culture is thriving feedback is healthy #satchat
How do you put those goals into actions that yield results? We have the survey results and goals, but have not seen much positive change/improvement. #satchat
A3: As Supt, each year I held a Climate Seminar w/ invited Ts, staff, Ss, Parents & Community. In discussion groups asked: What are we doing well? Our concerns? Obstacles? How can we improve?
#satchat
A3 Remedy error as soon as you see it, don't let small errors remain -- the more we can help each other to right our ways, the less we'll deal with issues that are too big and devastating. #satchat
A3: I show my own vulnerability as a leader and encourage others to talk openly about their contributions both positive and negative. Learned some great strategies from the book, Difficult Conversations. #satchat
A1. A positive school climate begins with providing room for teacher/leader self-care, a culture of growth and risk-taking to be innovative, and a culture of collegiality and inclusiveness. We see families of teachers working together in positive school communities #satchat
And that's the tricky part. So many times being honest and expressing concerns ends up backfiring on the person who has concerns. This destroys all trust in the work environment. #satchat

A3: An open-door policy, multiple means and people for members of the school community to express their opinions, ideas and concerns and respect for all (especially those dissenting voices) builds trust. #satchat
Full agree. I feel like we need refreshers on basic communication on a regular basis. The goal is transferring what is in one persons brain into the others. When there is a breakdown, there are a LOT of possible reasons. #satchat

Q4: A positive school climate can be supported and reinforced in a variety of ways. How does your school support and reinforce positive school climate? Do you use specific programs? #satchat
# Q1 I think as an Administrator it is important to have an open door policy. Listening and respecting ideas of others go a long way! Be fair and make decisions based on what’s best for students. Culturize by @casas_jimmy is a great book! #satchat
A3: focus on the mission. “Academic and Social Growth for all students everyday”. Simple, concise, and clear. Make that the focus and build decision making around growth. #satchat
A4: We celebrate our accomplishments within the school. We have monthly awards and recognize students for examples of character. We use social media and our website to promote. #SatChat

A person’s anger is not a personal vendetta ... so many teachers get angry with the leaders and make it personal when in reality they are angry with the situation. Many times they are just following orders from above. #satchat

Believe in yourself, take on your challenges, dig deep within yourself to conquer fears. Never let anyone bring you down. You got to keep going. – Chantal Sutherland #satchat#Leadership#txeduchat#txpvi#quoteoftheday
A3) This all stems from building relationships. You can’t be open and honest if there no sense of comfort and showing who you really are. Leadership can’t hide behind a mask, be present and be yourself, that’s how you start. #satchat
Q3: One essential to positive school climate is the ability of stakeholders to have honest and open communication. What are the steps you use to create this in your school? #satchat
A4 To support and reinforce positive school climate, let’s examine how our pedagogies, policies, systems, and structures create a context for all students to learn, work, and connect meaningfully. #satchat
People don’t feel valued when they aren’t included on an email. They feel exhausted when they are. I could teach a class on “email theater” which is what it is, often in higher ed. #satchat
A2: We work together to create a culture where students can feel safe to take risks in learning and we nurture relationships with all stakeholders 😊 #satchat
The Democrats could solve the Shutdown problem in a very short period of time. All they have to do is approve REAL Border Security (including a Wall), something which everyone, other than drug dealers, human traffickers and criminals, want very badly! This would be so easy to do!
Higher ed is such a different beast, so much entitlement and people who think it is below them to have to read email much less respond. Tried sending mailers but those just get tossed; very frustrating. #satchat
A3 We have staff meeting every morning for 15 minutes, then prof development 2x week. We also use restorative justice. This is how we practice communicating, listening, and sharing tough thoughts/feelings. It is a lot of time, practice, and supported by a shared value #satchat
A4: My school doesn't employ a particular program so I suppose one could improve the school climate and culture. Nothing wrong with that bc you're never done don't ever attain perfection in this area. #satchat
A3: My (now former school, @tcechs) did this through a #teacherpowered model, with extensive use of protocols, critical friends meetings, classroom rounds & #advisory with students - all focused on transparent flow of ideas to continually improve & grow. #satchat#growthmindset
#satchat Honest & open doesn't just imply the sharing of opinions; families know they can ask me, admin & colleagues questions, or express a need for help. The opportunity to dialogue and not just *react* increases our positive school climate: greet, answer, ask, respond, listen.
Q3: One essential to positive school climate is the ability of stakeholders to have honest and open communication. What are the steps you use to create this in your school? #satchat
I highly recommend @BreneBrown ‘s book Dare To Lead to understand the science behind creating healthy, thriving cultures and how vulnerability and courage are two essential elements to great leadership #satchat
I see that. One of the things I discuss with staff when they are angry; are they wanting just to vent, or do they see this as a problem that needs to be fixed. That reflection is often helpful in validating the feelings. #satchat
In reply to
@DennisDill, @LaurenPorosoff, @carlameyrink, @lookforsun
#satchat A3 Clear communication is critical in #school culture, and we maintain that with our allegiance to communicating effectively; so many times people complain, rather than speaking directly to the people with whom they have conflict.
Q4: A positive school climate can be supported and reinforced in a variety of ways. How does your school support and reinforce positive school climate? Do you use specific programs? #satchat
I would not recommend using Facebook as a tool for this. This forces people onto a platform to talk about personal things, which are in turn used by the company and shared broadly with data collectors and other untrustworthy actors. A3 #SatChat
A4. I love using children's literature to dive into school climate. In more than one school this book has moved mountains to increase sharing and caring about others. #satchat
A3 keep the doors open - literally and figuratively .. create opportunities to bring diverse roles in the district or Schls together / when the custodian or a cafeteria work speak listen and elevate their voice / engage young people with adults #SatChat
Amanda from Indiana jumping in late A3- I believe it begins with relationships. Whether your stakeholders are Ss, Ts, or Parents. People communicate more efficiently when there is an established relationship. #satchat
Hopefully not literally...bc to me that means you're in your office during the school day and I subscribe to being out and about as much as possible. #satchat
A1 As a school leader it starts with me, but the feeling inside the building largely comes from supported (hopefully) educators who lead by example. Our kids watch and aspire to our behaviors and attitudes, we should always make sure we want those in our classrooms. #satchat
Email theater can vary dependent on perspective, intent. It's often safe to include more than one on that email especially if you are dealing w/someone who can be threatening or bullying. #satchat
A4. We build a positive school culture thru “focusing on our students” thru character recognition, SEL programs, staff team building that leads to classroom team building- but most important is just building day to day connections with others. #satchat
Definitely. When someone is angry, they will read an email with the worst tone in their minds. That’s human nature. Always keeping in mind that email is a form of getting what is in one persons brain into another; it’s much more effective to do that with tone. #satchat
A3 This requires perpetuation over time. Although not all communications can be acted upon, stakeholders need to see productive action (follow through) when possible in order to trust that they can be open; reasons should be given for inaction. #satchat
A4: As a school leader I try to reinforce positive school climate through presence. I try to be as present as possible in the halls, classrooms, lunch room, playground, etc. I engage with people (Ts & Ss) to keep relationships alive. #satchat
Love that you’ve included everyone who interacts with students. How does that system ensure that each are contributing their voice, and are heard? #SatChat
A2: Developing a system that allows for contribution of all stakeholders - P’s, T’s, S’s, custodians, cafe workers, paras, everyone... in form of committees, forums, coffee gatherings #satchat
#satchat A3 Communicate with people outside of your classroom, your hallway, your team! So important to have a strong PLN. This is why we love Twitter. You do not need to be in the same building to have the same goals.
A3 I love the use of a website as a virtual platform for a classroom or school--essentially the website includes the nuts and bolts of the program, weekly newsletters, and other important information--it's an evolving reference book providing access/authenticity #satchat
Indeed...and only happens AFTER a strong sense of trust, mutual respect, and transparency is in place. Where you have a culture to care enough to have positive, constructive conversations that lift all boats. #satchat
Excellent comment/question about emails. @MsJWhiting#satchat. It’s so easy to be swamped w/ other needs during and after school. Your comment reminded me of the importance of a prompt response. Thank you.
In science, weather is what you see when you look out the window, while climate is years of compiled weather data. In education, climate is what you feel when you walk in the school doors, while culture can take years to establish. #amirite? #HamstraHighlights#scichat#culturize
A2 #satchat In my district a lot of people are on twitter and we all follow each other. It’s great to hear so many voices and see people celebrating successes in words and photos! From the arts to athletics.
A4: We provide opportunities to hear from everyone, hold spirit days, and have a monthly character ed program taught by our T’s which incorporates mindfulness, decision making, and open discussions of everyday stressors. #satchat
#satchat It is so important to nurture and collaborate with your PLN--sometimes I take this for granted, but as I look back, my most significant growth as an educator has started w/my online PLN--great ideas, dedicated people. #gratitude
A simple “hey, is it ok with me to follow this conversation up with an email to make sure I’ve heard you and to give you an opportunity to correct anything I may have misunderstood” goes a long way #emailTheater#satchat
Q3 Leaders must be open to new ways to solve problems even when different from their own Openly acknowledge colleagues & ideas. Leaders don't have to have all answers but willingness to learn critical to model. Leader's value of collab. decisions & learning essential #Satchat

I love that...can I use it? 😊 We choose very carefully when we send an email because we aren't allowed to cause "undo work" on faculty.Apparently the rest of the world doesn't know this (think apps that change, grocery stores who move items around, website updates, etc) #satchat
A4: Too often the focus is on what’s wrong, focusing on what’s good and building from there facilitates positive communication, attitudes and inevitable growth #satchat
How might we:
- find the people not participating in open door policies and be sure they are understood?
- prevent building geography from interfering with communication?
#satchat
Even if it is “hey, I got your email, I’m reflecting on it and will get back to you by the end of the day tomorrow” goes a long way. #satchat#emailtheater
A3: someone stated it similarly, but having leadership that is humble enough and receptive to receive informal feedback from teachers, and teachers to receive it from students/parents. #satchat
I struggle with recognition systems because it seems we inevitably differ in our interpretations and students who deserve recognition are always overlooked #satchat

A4 I use the five elements of wellbeing as a framework creating a thriving school culture. When we are thriving in all five areas we are at our best. Then leaders employ a strengths based focus they set people up for success based on who they are and what they do best #satchat
A5: We give our students opportunities to be involved in our school. We started a student tech team and we have had student produce videos and graphics for school use. We students are showing pride in our school, others feed off of it. #SatChat
Building a positive school culture is a continuous and evolving process. This year we continue this important work by focusing on belonging. Through various lenses we examine how we enhance belonging for both Ss, Ps, and edus. #satchat#masterychat
Too often minority groups or underserved groups have been blamed for their anger when the truth is that their anger comes from institutional biases and discrimination that has left them out and needs repair. #satchat
A2: this is an interesting ? to me. I’d argue the climate of a building is already determined, Whether people have voices or not. The question is how do you listen to voices to move the culture in a direction that allows for all to be authentic, as opposed to some. #satchat
Of course you can use it; but I’d do it one on one. Explaining to people that when they are sending an email, they need to keep in mind it is NEVER private and you should expect it to be shared with others. In larger groups it can come across as cavalier #emailtheater#satchat
A2: I agree that teams with strong, connected (internally) leadership CAN develop more transparency and trust. Listening and responding to the needs of teacher leadership and elevating their voice and elevating their input can greatly enhance building culture. #satchat

School culture starts with the kids. If the kids are not enjoying being at school no amount of parent communication ... free food ... school propaganda will create a positive culture. #satchat
A3: Being honest and transparent is important to communication. Even if I make a mistake or someone disagrees with me I love having professional conversations or debates. It pushes both sides to think deeply about the issue. #satchat
True--I think it's important to get underneath the anger some teachers have and to really ask them why they are teaching and what they need to do their best work. #satchat
A4: Our Student Advisory program - crafted by a team of teachers - allows students to engage in, shape, reinforce and celebrate being a vital part of the school’s culture. #satchat

A5: Investing the time every day for #advisory, where students get to work on building solid relationships with adults and each others, as well as #SEL, #GeniusHour, develop short & long term plans, and yes, even #play. This is THE climate game changer (IMO). #satchat
The culture & climate exists. It is alive. The ? becomes is there an intentional plan to move the culture in a certain direction and how do you go about doing that. The gap between the culture that exists and the one we want as leaders is where the work is #Satchat
A5: We have so many opportunities that allow our Ss to show pride in our school. Through open discussions, integration of SEL, and promoting a culture of communication and collaboration, they can see the impact of a positive school climate daily. #satchat
Instead the leadership put their own "ambition over mission" and treated educators like robots--they used favoritism and cronyism as their leadership mantras rather than really working w/all to build a strong community. #satchat
Sadly, I think that is true for all of life. We can easily focus on the negative because it will always be there, nothing is perfect, but to see the good rise above the imperfect & wrong, there is a beauty to it. Gives you the right focus to strive for, to want to be #satchat
A5 Our core support is #GNRPRIDE - Perseverance Respect Innovation Dependability and Enthusiasm - We also have the support of Praise from the Principal PRIDE Promoter Lunch and Grade Celebrations to celebrate student success #satchat
A5: we create several larger “families” within the school. The families consist of mixed grade levels and include all the adults in the school. The families meet together several times a year and engage in various activities #satchat
We can’t understate the importance of building geography. Are doors open or closed? Whose faces do we see? How do students get around? Who are(n’t) bathrooms for? Which spaces are restricted, to whom, and how does that communicate messages about power and privilege? #satchat
A5 structures of @responsiveclass such as starting every day with morning meeting provide not just a chance for some but for every child to speak with voice #satchat
Exactly! The first step in an authentic recognition system that impacts performance is to ask how someone likes to be recognized. We assume we know or we do so in a way we like to be recognized. Authentic recognition works. #satchat
Too often minority groups or underserved groups have been blamed for their anger when the truth is that their anger comes from institutional biases and discrimination that has left them out and needs repair. #satchat
This is a fantastic program that I helped implement at @EARJOfficial. Great discussions with all stakeholders to make sure it was responsive to our community! #satchat
Q4: A positive school climate can be supported and reinforced in a variety of ways. How does your school support and reinforce positive school climate? Do you use specific programs? #satchat
A5: We also extend our school climate beyond the walls of the schools- our community is deeply engrained in our schools (senior citizens, town council, community organizations, rotary, etc) and together we build the culture of the entire town. #satchat
A4: the teachers in the building usually drive the climate along with the students and families. One school included staff in their positive behavior program with weekly drawings and social gatherings. It was very effective. #satchat
Now I am working a very positive situation where the growth opportunities are strong--of course there are always avenues for improvement, but leadership structures and leadership objectives are so critical to positive school culture. #satchat

I always thought it’s important to hear the voices of students who aren’t doing well (as the school defines it), have behavioral challenges, etc. I trust the model includes those who may have the most at stake and the most to say, if truly given the opportunity. #SatChat
A5: Students need to be taught how to positively interact with their peers. This is Especially true if they do not see productive relationships at home. We saw great success with a formal PBSIS program the school. #satchat
A3: Leaders model what they want. Every conversation, in the hallway, office, classroom or faculty room involving the leader either helps support a positive school climate or creates a hostile one. Do leaders shut down the conversation or ask questions to open it up? #satchat
A5. Have lunch with Ss - talk about school. Have them lead through morning announcements, safety patrol, assemblies. Get feedback. School is about Ss. #satchat
I would concur...the culture is deeply woven into an organization, good or bad. That's why it's hard to change. But it CAN be changed. It just takes hard work and starts with open, trusting relationships that provide voice & transparency. #satchat
Yet when the same people are criticizing assessment scores and looking for solutions, they don't realize that their cavalier insensitive attitudes towards what it takes to teach well are often at the root of poor performance and less success. #satchat
A3: I find that plenty of folks don't feel like they're informed, and that's on the school. The more community contact, the better. Once that's engaged, then we can start to foster a high-quality give-and-take w/ the community #satchat
I'm reading a book that discusses the need for leaders to be accountable to their staff, not just the other way around. It is amazing what an impact a positive growth-focused leader can have on an institution! #satchat
It also documents for future accountability; “hey, you never discussed that with me!” Um. “Yes I did; let me show you the email follow up from our conversation” #emailtheater#satchat
A5 Give Ss leadership roles in the school. Find time for Ss to be able to get together with the Ss not in their classroom. Building those relationships is everything! #satchat
I always thought it’s important to hear the voices of students who aren’t doing well (as the school defines it), have behavioral challenges, etc. I trust the model includes those who may have the most at stake and the most to say, if truly given the opportunity. #SatChat
I think another important factor that helps with this is fostering growth mindset and failing forward. Everyone knows we are always striving to do better and learn from mistakes. #satchat
Our school does PBS (positive behavior system) Staff works to focus on positive much more than negative. We use dojo and have worked on interventions to help students improve behavior. #satchat
Q6: Developing and maintaining a positive school climate also involves clear expectations for student behavior. What has your school or district done in this area? Provide examples. #satchat
#satchat A4 cont: My district has adopted the "whole school transformation process" of Covey's The Leader in Me. Though still in our early stages, common vocabulary, goals & structure might help many to feel more connected.
Library as refuge! Students who struggle in the classroom should have other places where they feel like they aren’t being measured—they can just be. #SatChat
A5 I dont have a DO NOW list for students while Im doing hall duty. They can talk with other students or quietly read a book, whatever they need to recharge. The other day, a group of students did a conga line around the classroom. That was cool! #satchat
A5 - We have the Ss led tours, advisory time, PBIS, dojo. But Ts and Admin have to lead by example. If Ss see us have positive interactions, then we celebrate w/ Ss their positive interactions it will grow. Relationships first! #satchat
effective for who? I have found the kids don't' really buy into them because of the "fakeness" of them- identifying and noticing "positive" behaviors in kids and rewarding them just doesn't seem real #satchat
A3: #satchat
In her book “Building Trust fur Better Schools”, Kochanek provides a valuable framework for understanding how #trust develops.

I've read a lot about anger since as a young women whose aspirations were often not the same as leaders around me, I had to bury a lot of ideas, beliefs, and passions which is a good recipe for anger. I've dissected most of it, found the roots, and crafted better paths. #satchat

That is exactly why we send it to the masses. The information is vital to the University's success and we must document that we are adequately preparing people for the change ahead. #satchat

A5 Each week, we announce and thank "Kindness Heroes" who have been nominated by their peers or teachers for acts of kindness (especially ones that are not obvious). Students painted "kindness rocks" together and placed them around campus. #satchathttps://t.co/tE834Gv5Kn
A6: We could do a better job in this, but whenever dealing with student behavior, we try to explain the reasons why we have these expectations. #SatChat
Library as refuge! Students who struggle in the classroom should have other places where they feel like they aren’t being measured—they can just be. #SatChat
Start the new year off with stellar organizational skills. Students can write about what they want to prioritize this year in Lyric Lab: https://t.co/WlF2Cpx70t#leadupchat#satchat
I work in a school where all educators are passionate about their work and have taught for years. It's generally a welcoming, supportive environment so I haven't encountered these educators. #satchat
A5 As leaders we can't assume Ss know what positive interactions look like. We must model as adults at all times. Ss look to us to know how to behave. Missing skill-teach it. Discuss and point out good interactions and model positive appropriate interactions #satchat
A5 Co-create affinity spaces w/our students (POC, LGBTQ, ESL). When they vocalize they don’t feel seen or respected, we need to listen to their stories - often painful, often rendered invisible - and see the cracks in our school culture. We need to prioritize repairing. #satchat
A5: I love our forward progress in restorative justice and the strength of the s leadership in our Student Council and NJHS, but we still have a long way to go in elevating student voice. No invisible students is a serious charge, but always searching out new ideas. #satchat
Library as refuge! Students who struggle in the classroom should have other places where they feel like they aren’t being measured—they can just be. #SatChat
A6: We have a student code of conduct policy and communicate expectations for student behavior at different points of the year. Does anyone have any innovative/exciting ways of doing this? #satchat
A6: This is a great question for all admin and #teachers to ponder. There's a careful balance of establishing precedent while also treating each case w/ the indiv attn it deserves and needs. But a well-established, concrete, & simple set of rules is a crucial beginning #satchat
The question is how to deal with staff who consistently miss it. Universities (and schools, and other institutions) struggle in general to hold staff accountable. This is why supervision and leadership are vital skills #satchat
Every day they start by writing 7 gratitude statements and 1 of them has to express appreciation for a different peer everyday and repeat the cycle. It sets the tone, teach them how to express gratitude, and have empathy for one another. #satchat
We actually have a weekly PLC, weekly student service meeting, and a number of common planning times for our grade-level team. This is much more positive than in the past when we had little time to team, collaborate. #satchat
Imagine if we celebrated teachers the same way we celebrate athletes and celebrities.
One of my many missions: teachers on @wheaties. #teachersonwheaties@GeneralMills
I transitioned into tech where emails are SHORT, cc's are purposeful. Emails: not private. Culture shock from school. Could no longer tolerate 5-paragraph essay emails & "reply to all" abuse. So, didn't read.
Teach & kindly enforce email etiquette. #satchat
A6: Student behavior is an outcome of the time you invest to get to know each student as an individual - their goals, dreams, problems, etc. - and then doing what it takes to give them voice in their growth. #satchat
Good point. I've learned a lot from a colleague who faces this head on w/kind, empathetic questioning. She came from a good family that provided a lot of positive modeling. That's helped. #satchat

Yeah, I think one of the sticky points is when you go to your leadership for assistance and follow-up never occurs, then it all comes back around again which should not occur had it been followed up with in the first place. #satchat
A6: We not only model the expected behaviors, but we give Ss opportunities to model to their peers by promoting leadership opportunities, discussions, and highlighting achievements in character ed. Students have so much to offer each other and the community! #satchat
Q6: Developing and maintaining a positive school climate also involves clear expectations for student behavior. What has your school or district done in this area? Provide examples. #satchat
A6. We regularly visit with kids to get feedback and reinforce our expectations (if needed) - we only have 2 expectations (1. Golden Rule and 2. Do your Best). Most important is modeling by staff and “catch kids doing something good” - build upon success. #satchat
I routinely visit schools as a Student Teacher Supervisor. I can - literally - FEEL a positive climate or a negative climate.....in classrooms and schools. NEVER underestimate the importance of our topic this morning. #satchat. Thanks to all of you for your insights. 👍
Yes, and the colleague circle approach is one of best I've participated in. I also really like the research on "hosting conversations." In our world we are still infants when it comes to using good collaborative processes to understand, solve, and prioritize problems. #satchat
I’m reminded of that video of a (kindergarten-age?) teacher who had her students point to a picture of how they wanted to be greeted that day, including a high-five or a hug. Among many other benefits, this may give clues on how they’re feeling. #SatChat
A6: Behavioral norming is important- clear expectations lead to equity and establish trust in the school. We considered a formal PBIS model - but have decide to build our own personalized model. Our SEL committee is in the research phase now. #satchat
A5: PBIS and restorative justice practices help facilitate a positive culture, modeling expectations and genuine care and concern for own our actions affect those around us, it begins with each of us #satchat
Agree. We have digital signage, email, demos, training sessions, 1 on one sessions, mailers, and email. We are doing our best to reach out every way we possibly can. #satchat

A6 At that start of the year @mrs_sfelicetta@GNR_Counselor and I review school expectations- Each month buddy classes get together to review expectations for an area of the school - The 🔑is revisiting through the year and reinforcing positive behaviors #GNRPRIDE#satchat
A6 - By modeling the expectations. By setting goals for Raschel Ss. Use words of affirmation. By building relationships early. Show sincerity. Ss don’t misbehave on purpose or continuously for people they respect. #satchat
Q5 focus is on positive interactions as growth mindset. Our assemblies focus on character (not grades) and many teachers have the students share traits of students that exemplify and model citizenship. #satchat
We are starting the work of revitalising our weekly PLC time because it has drifted into team "co-blabber-ation." What are some things you do to keep it focused on collaboration? #satchat
Also have to look at individual classes ... what is the culture inside the classrooms? If they’re not running to class (because they want to be there) than why would they want to be at school? #satchat
A6 We work with restorative practices, so when Ss struggle with behavior we ask them to reflect. Why is this happening? Who are they hurting? How can they solve their problem differently? How can they make amends? Reflection helps them make lasting change.
#satchat
And. We love to train issues that really are permformance issues. How many trainings do we sit through because someone on staff messed up and instead of confronting that individual the entire department sits through a training? #satchat
We are transitioning from teacher created to more student-created. This is done throughout the day with a lead teacher roaming building to gather footage. Our goal is to create the club #satchat
Yes, I agree. I read a lot of articles from business school research that often focus on communication. Following Harvard Business School @HarvardHBS or MIT @MITSloan provides a lot of good information. #satchat

A6 Developing expectations - yes. Ensuring consistency in follow through is critical too. If all staff respond differently than stated in expectations to challenging beh., we intermittently reinforce those behaviors, making them stronger and more resilient to change #satchat
A6 We have invested time and money into becoming trauma-informed. It has been a game changer. We are recognizing that our most challenging behaviors are cries for love and intervention, not isolation and detention. #satchat
Q6: Developing and maintaining a positive school climate also involves clear expectations for student behavior. What has your school or district done in this area? Provide examples. #satchat
Q6 As a school we developed RISE, our acronym for our core beliefs. It has seeped into our discipline policies, our class lessons, everything we do #salk#successatlps#weRise#satchat
The common denominator of all the schools I've visited that have a strong climate is an investment in advisory focused on making the school a place where students want to be. That's the foundation to create positive behaviors...not a set of rules. #satchathttps://t.co/fmJZW2avt2
I think that the biggest reason why educators get upset with leadership is when they are not heard or given the time to express or discuss a situation with honesty. #satchat

#satchat STUCO, buddy classrooms, anti-bullying, Family Math Night, Robotics, Library Club, classroom jobs, variety of sharing/team strategies, peer modeling, cultural awareness & rules encouraging safe, kind & helpful behaviors all support + school climate
A6 - By modeling the expectations. By setting goals for Ss. Use words of affirmation. By building relationships early. Show sincerity. Ss don’t misbehave on purpose or continuously for people they respect. #satchat
I suppose at the elementary/early grade levels this is effective to a degree. I haven't heard much about the effectiveness of programs like this at mid-level or higher. #satchat
A6: In the ES having lessons to teach students about expectations was great. In the HS the ISS teacher used to have discussions with the Ss about how to handle things differently next time so they didn’t end up back. Identifying triggers for negative behavior etc. #satchat
Q6. I think one of the best things is having students set goals. Academic goals as well as behavioral goals. When they take part in planning how to improve, they are empowered! #satchat
I must say Jeremey that you are correct here which makes me so sad. for years I have been working to try to move our assessment culture to one of learning and discovery and away from one of measuring and sorting but that culture continues to persist. #satchat
Bottom line: Multiple methods foster inclusion. Invite them in (whether they’re based inside or outside the school), use tech and other means for them to participate, go out into the community where they may be. It doesn’t all have to be committees and formal surveys. #SatChat A2
Oops, forgot the #satchat tag last time. "The Perfect School" by Jim Rosborg, Max McGee, and Jim Burgett. Three retired superintendents who write and consult now.
I do believe that mindfulness is positive--our counselor has students share their positive experience w/mindfulness at school assemblies and it's wonderful, inspiring. We have daily mindful moment for whole school - positive. (admit I was skeptical at first). #satchat

A6) Having student take ownership of expectations and behavior by having them create it. One of my schools has a simple motto: Take care of yourself, take care of each other, and take care of this place. Ss can build from that to take ownership of their behavior. #satchat
Q6: Developing and maintaining a positive school climate also involves clear expectations for student behavior. What has your school or district done in this area? Provide examples. #satchat
I'm not going to tweet out the entire list of Trump's profanities and indiscretions, but most recently he is responsible for the deaths of immigrant children at our border. What else would anyone call him except a motherf**Ker?

Q6: To add on to the brilliance shared regarding student behavior and school climate. Let’s reshape the way we frame behavior at the outset. Love this visual —> #satchat#sel#inclusion#wholechild
A5: Exploratory and investigative play, in our Kindergarten classroom, offers endless opportunities to support positive peer interactions...our students learn so much about the value of collaboration and how to resolve social interaction challenges. #satchat
A5. We used a CREW structure where students practice soft skills of communication and problem solving through initiatives. These same behaviors were directly taught in academic classes as Habits of Scholarship #satchat@ELeducation@mgmgators
THAT'S THE END OF THE CHAT FOR TODAY!
THANK YOU PLN for a great kick off of #satchat in 2019!
It was great to connect, collaborate and learn with all of you.
Hope to see you next Saturday (1/12) @ 7:30am EST for the next #satchat
This is all so important. Rooting out racism and sexism is a tall task, but it begins by CALLING it out—and reflecting on our own biases and behavior.
#satchat
Often schools fall into old time paternal paradigms rather than teamwork, collaborative paradigms. I believe the real need in education today is reworking roles, structure, and leadership models for betterment. #satchat
I don't see anger as a negative. To me it means someone feels strongly enough about something to care; that's a good thing. The trick is getting beneath the anger to identify the trigger for the reaction and find a solution for that. #satchat

A1 I must have a relationship, interaction, growth & learning focus. I must be present & available. Ss need to feel safe, welcome, valued, & feel our commitment to their growth and learning-non negotiable PreK-12. I must be a sincere model of what I want to see. #Satchat
Not simple, but important to continually evaluate communication strategies--I am always faulted for over communicating, but choose to err on that side as it provides everyone access to the information they need to support the learners well. #satchat
