A1 (1) SEL is the process where we acquire & apply the skills to understand & manage emotions, feel & show empathy for
others, maintain positive relationships, & make responsible decisions.
SEL can be the foundation to equitable practices in the classroom #satchat#collabclass
Morning, #satchat. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. Just rolled out of bed here, which reminds me: my social-emotional learning capacity always gets a boost from good night's sleeps.
A1 Equitable practices seeks to make sure there inclusivity in the learning, making sure learners get what they need. SEL makes sure that there is inclusivity as well but tends more to the SE needs of the learner #satchat#collabclass
A1: Equitable practices focuses on ensuring all Ss have what they need while SEL focuses on developing SE competencies in Ss. SEL can support equitable practices by fostering empathy & appreciating diversity #satchat
A1 (1) SEL is the process where we acquire & apply the skills to understand & manage emotions, feel & show empathy for
others, maintain positive relationships, & make responsible decisions.
SEL can be the foundation to equitable practices in the classroom #satchat#collabclass
A1 (2). Equitable practices provide every student w/ access to resources & ed. rigor they need regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, language, disability, background or family income.
#satchat#collabclass
A1 At the core of both are relationships, but I see equitable practices to be more intentional around the socio-political context of race and power #satchat#collabclass
A1: SEL helps me self-regulate and practice empathy so I can build healthy relationships with those around me; Empathy helps me reach beyond my immediate world to engage with those whose experiences I don't share to improve our collective experiences (equity) #satchat
My hope (always) is that equitable practices fall under the umbrella of #SEL...but I am not sure that is always the case. I think one might see a classroom full of social and emotional learning opportunities that don't necessarily address equity... #satchat
A1. All kids need SEL learning but the types of learning components differ with each student. Starts w/ relationships- if we know our kids that allows us to meet personalized needs. #satchat
A1. When schools commit to promoting S’s SEL, they become positioned to engage all ed stakeholders & create a safe, equitable, & engaging school climate, so each S acquires & enhances the knowledge, skills, & dispositions they need for interpersonal & life success. #satchat
The thing about #satchat that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
A1 Equitable practices ensure all students can be successful in your learning environment. SEL practices help everyone understand equitable practices value. #satchat
A1 (3) SEL skills of perspective taking & empathy can pave the path for understanding cultural demands & meaning of diversity in different contexts.
More work is needed to connect these two. The combined power of SEL and eq. practice is transformative.
#satchat#collabclass
A1: SEL creates an understanding of emotions, differing perspectives, how to navigate social situations... Equitable practices must be rooted in SEL (valuing Ss different backgrounds, stories, etc), but are really challenging Ts to be aware of their own biases #satchat
Would equitable practices provide students w access to resources in a manner that understands the impact of race, gender, ethnicity, language, etc has on the student? I would think “regardless” is the opposite of equitable. Just something I’m chewing on #satchat
Relationships are at the heart of everything we do as educators. The better we learn to develop them, the better, more adjusted we and other learners become together #satchat#collabclass
A1 At the core of both are relationships, but I see equitable practices to be more intentional around the socio-political context of race and power #satchat#collabclass
A1. Ts who possess SEL-competence may already be using techniques that recognize & honor the cultural backgrounds of their Ss; then again, maybe not. Likewise, can we assume that because Ts are grown adults, they have SEL-competence? Sadly, we cannot. #satchat
Sorry--A1--and to add on, like @clairemriddell I think we need to be more intentional aboue equitable practices...although, I am not sure you can address equity in your space WITHOUT a strong #SEL support. #Satchat
My hope (always) is that equitable practices fall under the umbrella of #SEL...but I am not sure that is always the case. I think one might see a classroom full of social and emotional learning opportunities that don't necessarily address equity... #satchat
A1 Equitable practices ensure that we are cognizant of what each individual child needs + we do our best to provide to to them. Teaching SEL skills gives Ss the ability to determine what it is they are feeling and need for their own health and success #satchat
A1: SEL should be the foundation in which we create equitable classrooms. All Ss should feel safe to share & take risks across their day #satchat@DocCatto#collabclass
A1 One 2-way bridge betw equity & social-emotional learning: Equity efforts rely on empathy, which attunes us to those we serve. As we get better handle on others' stories, we can begin to collaborate specifically on serving both diverse & shared SEL needs more equitably #satchat
A1 I see equity as being based around values, whether personal or organizational, that define how we interact around race, gender . . . I see SEL as the means to being equitable, acquiring those social and emotional skills that allow equity to be present. #satchat
A1 - Equitable practices focuses on every student getting what they need every day, even if not everyone is getting the same thing. SEL is focusing on the mental wellbeing of students. SEL should be equitable. #satchat
I agree @DocCatto SEL can foster equitable practices. An attention to what does it mean to be fair, just, reasonable with all students needs to be examined. #satchat#collabclass
A1: Great question! I think that SEL practices support equity in the classroom. It is our responsibility to be intentional about practicing SEL and equity so that it is a natural part of our learning and school communities. #satchat#collabclass
Equitable practices meet the needs of students (and families) @CommSchools
SEL practices reach the heart and make deeper connections/relationships #satchat#Collabclass
A1: SEL should be the foundation in which we create equitable classrooms. All Ss should feel safe to share & take risks across their day #satchat@DocCatto#collabclass
A1: By making sure that we do focus on the social emotional needs of our students first we are creating equitable environments! All students must feel safe before they can learn! #satchat#collabclass
Starr, Yes - change is so key! Sometimes fear of change (perceived loss as a result?) is what forces entrenchment and prevents equity. Empathy is necessary to mitigate these reactions #satchat
I think this is key. Can we assume SEL supporters also make the move towards equitable practices? I know I wasn’t well versed enough in equity to do so as a T, but I incorporated SEL. #satchat
First, good morning. I think the difference is sometimes how the application looks. Sometimes equitable for one student looks like unfair to other students. #satchat.
A1: equitable practices require teachers to adapt and sel requires students to adjust...they are alike in terms of the purpose of justice, however different in the process of how to achieve this goal #satchat#collabclass
A1: SEL should be the foundation in which we create equitable classrooms. All Ss should feel safe to share & take risks across their day #satchat@DocCatto#collabclass
A1: I don't think you can achieve equity without strong SEL. SEL builds empathy, an ability to see other perspectives -- keys to an equitable classroom. If you don't feel safe and understood it's difficult to learn. #satchat
Free resource unit (part 2) gives teachers a chance to self-reflect about teaching practices that impact student SEL and equity via @GTLCenter at AIR https://t.co/tmVTEB7ceR#satchat
A1 SEL in the classroom refers to the way we help students to navigate the classroom/world around them in a way that is responsible and respectful. It opens their eyes to the differences around them. Equitable learning is linked, but doesn’t necessarily mean equal. #satchat
A1: SEL and equity are alike in the sense that they are both needed for a learning community to be successful as a whole, and different in that one does not necessarily go hand in hand w/the other. #satchat
Empathy is everything and sadly, what is modeled in the world shows what happens if we don't exhibit it. We have to do better in schools to make sure students walk away with this important social skill #satchat#collabclass
A1: equitable practices require teachers to adapt and sel requires students to adjust...they are alike in terms of the purpose of justice, however different in the process of how to achieve this goal #satchat#collabclass
Something else I’m reflecting on; how does SEL view anger as an emotion? A lot of what I see in SEL has a very negative view of anger. I wonder who that favors in equity work, and what system that reinforces? #SatChat
A2: We have educators who come from a variety of different backgrounds and experiences which bring varying perspectives that impact equity, but at the core, a common perspective that supports equity #satchat
A2: I think one of the underlying perspectives that isn’t always discussed is how a classroom is a microcosm of society at large. The lens through which we view the world outside our classroom doors is the lens we bring with us to that group of students.
#satchat#collabclass
A1: I think of SEL being focused on individual competencies that are expected across all settings. Equitable practices are broader competencies that focus on breaking down and overcoming socio-political barriers. #collabclass#satchat
A1: SEL should be the foundation in which we create equitable classrooms. All Ss should feel safe to share & take risks across their day #satchat@DocCatto#collabclass
A2 - Equity is impacted by empathy. We can't assume what a student has experienced in his or her life. Equity requires recognizing differences. #satchat
A1. Biggest difference between SEL & Equity is that you cannot expect the same attitude from each child, who have different backgrounds, no matter how equitable your room. For some students, safe doesn't mean the same. #satchat
Q1: I see equitable practices as things that can be legislated or addressed with policy, but true SEL fosters the kind of growth that makes people yearn for equity #satchat#collabclass
A2. Socio-economic status of students; socio-economic composition of school; school resources; school/teaching processes; and school climate/learning environment. #satchat
So long as we continue to say things like "appreciate diversity" or "push inclusivity," *we're* still pushing *our* kumbaya view of the world.
(Nothing against KumBaYa, but the gushy waves of good feels lasts about as long as the marshmallows we roast while singing.) #satchat
A1: The practices are what educators can do to make sure all S's have access, SEL is how S's learn while recognizing and managing emotions, empathy and relationships in school. #satchat#collabclass
Silly...but I love the design of the SEL Competency wheel...the meaning behind the colors, significance of outer rings...could chat about it for hours:) #satchat
For some reason, empathy seems to be a rare thing among educators.
Teachers forget what it was like to be a student.
Principals forget what it was like to be a teacher.
#satchat
So, does this analogy-meets-cliche fit: Social-emotional learning is the horse & all kinds of other learning is the cart? Beware of putting the latter before the former. #satchat
A1. When schools commit to promoting S’s SEL, they become positioned to engage all ed stakeholders & create a safe, equitable, & engaging school climate, so each S acquires & enhances the knowledge, skills, & dispositions they need for interpersonal & life success. #satchat
A1: Equitable Practices are what we do as teachers, and how we model social/emotional skills. SEL is more explicitly taught to students. Different sides of the same coin #satchat
A1: They’re different bc SEL is essential for all Ss; equitable practices ensure culturally responsible teaching for marginalized Ss. Vulnerable Ss also need constant monitoring to ensure they are progressing as well as their peers. #satchat
We need to make sure that our classrooms reflect the people who are making use of them. We need to make our classrooms safe for all learners and we have to have hard, important conversations that allows students/teachers to experience empathy in different ways #satchat
A1: being equitable doesn’t always have something to do with an SEL situation, but sometimes addressing one’s SEL needs will help a student be on the same playing field as another without an SEL situation #satchat
@DocCatto not exactly A2 but I was thinking about the perspective that equity (or SEL) cannot be things we just do but rather a way in which engage authentically with others - adults and children #satchat
A1 SEL promotes equitable practices in classroom and vice versa. They support/bolster each other. Ensuring equitable practices in school seems more directed by Ts, where using SEL skills can be done by Ss w/o T involvement once learned. #satchat#collabclass
A2 The biggest issue I see regularly is 1 approach to teaching, when there are so many levels in the classroom. Then after Ts complain students can’t do the work they want them to do. #satchat
#satchat
No over-priced guest speaker or assembly program will take the place of the daily interactions between teacher and child. All the acronyms, catch phrases, and boxed programs aside, when it comes to social-emotional learning, it all comes down to this ...
#everyday
Now this is an interesting perspective!!!! Teachers adapting instruction to address equity and students adjusting their stance in the classroom through #SEL practices. Smart! #satchat
A2: I certainly believe that that the background of staff members play a huge role in how they view equity. It is often hard to understand the needs one may have if you have not walked in their shoes. #collabclass#satchat
A1 addendum: We can't have equitable learning environments if we don't have an abundance of pro-social skills among all stakeholders. SEL comes before equity. #collabclass#satchat
Agreed. And it starts with us. Am I teaching what I "know is best" for my students or do I, instead, understand who my students are and learn alongside them for ongoing growth and impact #satchat
A2. As educators we need to be aware of our biases that unintentionally put limits or barriers in a child’s learning. We must treat each child as if they were our own. #satchat
A2: I think a good start is for folks like me to recite once a day or so "I'm complicit" (or if you're feeling particularly bold, "I'm a racist") and start form there. Our lenses are invisible, we wash them with Windex hourly--we like them that way.
#satchat
We have to rethink what we are doing in our spaces so that students can wrap their brains around the experiences of others. We need to present them with opportunities to test their beliefs and stretch them in a way the seeks inclusivity and understanding #satchat
A1 #satchat: this is a tricky question. #SEL is a personal journey of readiness and #equity practices are strengthened as we have greater understanding of self & others. Educators are responsible for both.
@DocCatto not exactly A2 but I was thinking about the perspective that equity (or SEL) cannot be things we just do but rather a way in which engage authentically with others - adults and children #satchat
A1: in my mind SEL is about supporting and fostering the social & emotional growth of a child where equitable practices is about employing strategies and procedures to ensure all have the access and ability to learn. #satchat
A2: Preconceived notions are silent killers. They block open mindedness and inhibit teacher responsiveness to helping all kids due to the belief that some just aren’t equipped. #satchat#collabclass
It's so true. Too often we stay in our comfort zone doing things how we've always done them unwilling to acknowledge when they aren't working for our kids NOW. We must do what is best for our current students #satchat#collabclass
Agreed. And it starts with us. Am I teaching what I "know is best" for my students or do I, instead, understand who my students are and learn alongside them for ongoing growth and impact #satchat
For me, I see the wheel as a way to create a society that upholds the current systems’ power and blocks equity. I understand why it makes logical sense, but emotionally, there is a norm that is grounded in white, heteronormative, cisgender, patriarchy #satchat
In reply to
@IsabelBSawyer, @ProudLancerSupt, @DocCatto
A2: There is still a view among many teachers and students that fair means the same. I am very transparent with kids -- "You are getting different activities or assessments so that every student can get what they need and be challenged in their current learning." #satchat
Yes! How well do we know & value Ss? How do we account for different ways of being? How & to what degree are particular actions & display of emotions seen? Who’s granted more latitude than whom? #SatChat
Really hard to discuss equitable classrooms when curriculum is not equitable ... I’m a history teacher ... not always a balanced perspective how are students supposed to feel #satchat
A2: Our school has become very diverse -- many Ss who do not speak English, come from single parent homes, struggle financially-- sometimes I think Ts want to swoop in and "save" these Ss... They don't need saving. They need more opportunities to succeed. #satchat
Q2: special education & 504 understanding of the laws and empathy to create an equal playing ground for all. We are also having some concerns around lack of empathy related to religious beliefs and backgrounds. #satchat
A2: I think an important consideration around equity in the setting in which we work is feeling safe to have couragous conversations--and the intentional space we make for these conversations. #collabclass#satchat
A2: having the time to address all SEL needs as at times it’s hard to recognize every need as every student has a unique situation #collabclass#satchat
Really hard to discuss equitable classrooms when curriculum is not equitable ... I’m a history teacher ... not always a balanced perspective how are students supposed to feel #satchat
Being happy is an emotion but if that expression is causing disruptions in the classroom, preventing others from feeling safe and able to learn, the reaction is not an appropriate one at that time and place. #satchat
I see that sometimes being taught, but it is more rare to watch a teacher put it into practice. A lot of the work I do with teachers is helping normalize anger as a real emotion and helping deal with the emotional triggers anger creates for white teachers #satchat
A2- As adults we are too often impacted in our thoughts by our bias, ones that often times are unintentional, We will be better when we listen to our Ss tapping into the strength that comes with looking at an issue and the world with a fresh set of eyes #satchat
I hear you and that's why we have to offer pathways to students to explore beyond what is in the curriculum to help restore voices that are ignored. Easier said than done. #satchat
A2 #satchat I just did my dissertation on equity in international education. Cultural fragility, misconceptions, and assumptions are some of the influences of the marginalization of students and faculty.
A2: implicit bias rooted in the assumptions as beliefs we’ve developed in our society about anything or anyone that is not “like” us #CollabClass#satchat
I always wonder that myself. When people are quick to point out differences, it's harder to find the similarities. I think we can be intentional about creating equity without focusing on our differences, but discussing them when it comes up. #satchat#collabclass
A2 Two corrosive underlying perspectives impacting equity work: (1) 'Equity' is a buzzword, a passing edu fad, carrying different meanings depending on to whom one talks (2) Striving for equity runs counter to traditional school systems built for conformity & efficiency #satchat
A3 Our SEL (Social Emotional Learning) page https://t.co/wPkH4PGrvo Our SEL & More Pages https://t.co/DqxHuxJi7G#satchat SEL skills are keys to positive learning & behavior. Modeling and then employing kindness, empathy etc. can improve students’ attitudes toward school.
A1: Many have already touched on this, but I agree - practicing SEL will help to create an equitable classroom. But, we need to make sure the SEL is equitable, too - not everyone has the same social and emotional needs. #satchat
A2: In my setting, my understanding is that the perspectives range quite a lot, as I’ve seen on any campus I’ve been on. Equity can be viewed as one size fits all...which is just never the case. #satchat
A2: We need to be mindful that everyone comes with a different background, beliefs and prior experiences. What’s good for me might not be good for others. #satchat#collabclass
Sadness is given much more latitude than anger, from what I see practiced. If a kid cries, the teacher usually doesn’t get frustrated by the disruption; but anger? Kid goes to the principals office. #satchat
A2: understanding that every child, and every staff, come from a unique place with unique needs, dreams, and goals- there is no box into which they all fit. #satchat
A1: Equitable practices ensure each student has a chance to be successful in their learning through opportunities provided by the T. SEL maximizes the efficacy of those practices by enabling Ss with skills to keep a mindset conducive to learning. #satchat
A2: I think that there are still teachers and students who think mindsets/intelligences are fixed. We must all believe that all students can achieve high levels of success and growth and help them get there! #satchat
A3. One way to incorporate SEL into content-class time is to offer opportunities for peer engagement. Get Ss talking & interacting positively. Circles are a powerful tool for academic classes that help them learn by listening to their peers. #satchat
Very true! Sometimes we are good at teaching it to students during the lesson but we aren't modeling it throughout the day. That's sure to send mixed messages to our kiddos! I need to remember that when I push into classrooms. #satchat
A3 One effective way to help S's experience it is through socially conscious PBL's. Lots of topics S's interested in & PBL makes it real. Not learning something - its doing something (#Dewey) #satchat
A3: At our school, we seek to find less punitive ways to handle student infractions/conflict. Our primary goal is to support Ss and give them a voice. Some children just want to be heard, by any means necessary and act out to get that audience #satchat
A3: We teach SEL skills & strategies by providing authentic learning experiences and teachable moments that help Ss grow.
We support the Ss thru the process. #satchat
My opinion-Q2/A2 is crux of conversation. Do our attitudes towards world outside classroom reflect books on our shelves, strategies/phrases in our instruction, ways we relate to Ss/colleagues? Too often I think we use books on our shelves as evidence rather than actions. #satchat
Yes... I could. My soapbox is large, you can join me... and don't even get me started on grades... just like tests, they do nothing good #satchat#collabclass
I teach in a rural area (pop.20,000) and our ELL population is 20% of our school. One underlying perspective/notion is some teachers are against ELL speakers speaking their first lang. in class. This notion is harmful to their development. #satchat#collabchat
A3 Our SEL (Social Emotional Learning) page https://t.co/wPkH4PGrvo Our SEL & More Pages https://t.co/DqxHuxJi7G#satchat SEL skills are keys to positive learning & behavior. Modeling and then employing kindness, empathy etc. can improve students’ attitudes toward school.
A2: In my school, over 50% of kids come from an at-risk family situation. I'll never forget one time, I asked a student (who had their head down) if she was feeling ok.
She told me later that meant so much to her that my 1st reaction wasn't yelling at her. #satchat#collabclass
A3. Discussion circles can be fun, letting students tackle topics, share ideas, debate and laugh together. And they can also be healing, allowing students to discuss difficult content and express their feelings in a safe space. #satchat
Q3: We always used to try to address SEL as something separate, but we have seen amazing changes since focusing on developing supportive learning communities as a vehicle FOR learning. #satchat#collabclass
A3: Among many other things, our team is currently reading and discussing @Ready4rigor Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain #satchat#collabclass
A3 Teaching history with @eji_org mantra as a lens: we are all more than the worse thing we have ever done, so how is history the story of problems and solutions? What do I need to understand about your experience to work together to solve the problems of our society? #satchat
Q2 I think it’s important to be able to recognize our bias, but I also think it’s important to recognize our privilege. Equitable learning is about meeting the student where they are. #satchat
A2: Implicit bias is real and I think it affects even the most open minded and aware teachers. I appreciate technologies that help me mark papers without seeing student’s names, it’s often shocking how scores change when you’re able to leave you bias at the door. #satchat
A3: As a staff we are learning about @rulerapproach this school year. Our school and district admin team have made charters and learned about the mood meter this week. We also do thru advisory program and had ADL for a really powerful program for sophomores this year #satchat
A2 There is s/times the perception that some Ss can’t..learn, achieve, or excel. They absolutely can. We have to find the way that will work best for them to learn, achieve and excel. #satchat#collabclass
A3 As a District leader I am looking to make SEL part of our fiber as a learning community, modeling, providing learning opportunities, learning from those in my District, and learning for other schools that have had success will hopefully help expand SEL in ours #satchat
A3: we have made #SEL one of our district’s strategic plan goals- recognizing that the five year commitment will ensure a sustainable, reflective, and purposeful impact for our staff and students. Our SEL committee kicks off in Jan 2019 #satchat#collabclass
A3: I try my best to model the types of SEL Skills that I want my students to develop. I also own my mistakes -- I want them to know that no one is perfect. How can we expect them to develop SEL if we aren't open about our own as a learner? BE REAL in your classroom! #satchat
A3. Our focus is on relationships and getting to know passions and needs of our kids. We do use a program called “Second Step” with all kids weekly to intentionally work on SEL. #satchat
A3 Doesn't Jay @JayBilly2 talk about leading with culture, as in building a culture in the classroom and school? Isn't that how SEL gets taught on the ground? #satchat#collabclass
A2: Equity isn't about erasing differences through assimilation of dominant cultural norms; it is about embracing differences as necessary to a healthy society and ensuring that those differences are not used as barriers to growth. #satchat
Something else I’m reflecting on; how much do we assess the SEL of our teachers? How do we help them navigate their emotional triggers that might negatively impact (certain) students differently? #SatChat
A3 - A key is normalizing SEL and needs. Students shouldn't feel stigmatized for having a social or emotional need. SEL should be as valued as academic learning. #Satchat
A2: As a 9th grade T in a HS district, I get to provide Ss with a fresh start. I don’t have any prior knowledge of their abilities or behaviors but do consider their story. I want to hear their perspective about their journey and from there we begin. #satchat
A3. Ss #learn a lot by watching us. As Ts, we are role models who spend a great deal of time with our Ss. Therefore, we must '#model' the social skills we preach. This includes managing #anger, #collegial#interactions, constructive #criticism, & #stress etc. #satchat
A3 As English Language Arts teacher, using characters & situations that readers encounter in various texts as windows/mirrors (HT, @pacylin) to cultivate SEL is a foundational move. For more on windows/mirrors analogy, see https://t.co/EdgxSvENLK) #satchat
A3 When I was in the classroom, I taught through literature, collaborative learning experiences and advisory. We talked about how things impacted our emotions and then how our behaviors interact with those emotions. We also talked about social responsibility #satchat
A3: Schoolwide, we work collectively to use and honor lifeskills and lifelong guidelines. As a staff & in classrooms, we use Kagan classbuilding and teambuilding. Being a Writer, our new focus, has added an additional authentic layer! #satchat#collabclass
“It is my job to understand the struggles students face, both to improve their educational experience & to break through the barriers that keep them from learning.” @MichaelBonner_#satchathttps://t.co/trjZwqHQw5 (log-in req)
A3: We sometimes break the curriculum to get "a lesson in being good people"... Ss are able to reflect, process emotions, have tough discussions, and consider their impact on others. It's important to let them know being a good person trumps mastery of adding fractions 😕#satchat
Josh, as someone who apparently carries the map of the world on her face, I am too often working to make people understand I am not different. #satchat#collabclass
Am I actively checking my biases, attitudes, actions, privilege in order to daily examine my progress (or lack of)? Ss and colleagues know if I'm walking the walk or just talking the equity talk. #satchat#bebetter
My opinion-Q2/A2 is crux of conversation. Do our attitudes towards world outside classroom reflect books on our shelves, strategies/phrases in our instruction, ways we relate to Ss/colleagues? Too often I think we use books on our shelves as evidence rather than actions. #satchat
A3. I can guide Ss through the process of self-reflection. Targeted supports can help those who struggle with executive functioning issues or impulse control. SEL activities that use yoga or other kinds of movement may help Ss slow down and think about next steps. #satchat
Here’s the problem. Focusing on similarities keeps people with power in power. By uncovering the differences, we start to see which differences have power in society, and which are marginalized. This is the beginning of SEL, because it recognizes the emotional impact #satchat
A3: We must model, practice & guide Ss through each SEL competency. We can't expect what we don't first teach. SEL should be part of the entire instructional day. #satchat@DocCatto#collabclass
A2: I think of the main perspectives that impact equity is that diversity requires treating everyone differently in all things. Yes, cultures, traditions, languages, and beliefs are different - but we're all human, which means we all benefit from love, respect, &empathy. #satchat
“By integrating social development into core academic instruction, teachers ensure that social development does not get marginalized and pushed out of the school day. Instead it becomes integral to student learning and success” @PDBrunn#satchat
Do we spend time working with Ss to unpack understanding and differentiating between different emotions - for eg. frustration & anger? Do we know how different Ss emote? #satchat
Lunchtime book studies! My 6th gifted future problem-solving students didn't want our time together to end when competition season was over, so we read The View from Saturday by E. L. Konigsburg - chock full of SEL. #satchat#CollabClass
A3: Getting Ss (and oftentimes Ts) out of the privileged “bubble” in which we exist through service-based experiences seems to foster empathy and compassion for those living in very different circumstances. #satchat#colabclass
Here’s my concern; what characterizes “good people” in your lesson, and what might that teach some of the students in your class who go home to parents you’d describe as “bad people” in your lesson? Is that really developing SEL? Equity? #satchat
Oh man this is real. I’ve got a kid who uses Classic abusive man techniques when we try to discipline him. I’ve had to super manage my own triggers during a very hard year. I wish there was support for me & Ts triggered by him. #SatChat
A3: Firat and foremost, lead by example. Also taking the time to guide those when they need it and praise those when they deserve it. Must always be looking for these opportunities. #satchat
A3 This year it’s all about SEL and equity. Students in my history classes tackle real world issues and how they’re relevant to their daily lives through PBL(Immigration, social justice, etc) #satchat
A3 again: if you’re looking for resources, we have been working with @Peekapak@amishahdotca - which is an amazing SEL program that we are looking into bring to our K-5 learners. #satchat#collabclass
Yes! And yet as a society we are so attached to #accountability in this way - it is damaging to young students. #Anxiety is on the rise. It's ironic how we talk about building SEL into our cultures and then test the hell out of kids #satchat#collabclass
What if lessons on being good people were the curriculum and the content was used to support why that matters and how to do it. Being good people shouldn't be a break from regular programming, and yet sadly if often is. #satchat
A4: @Ready4rigor explains in her book how social justice within the classroom’s culturally responsive practices should focus on the T supporting students in growing from dependent learners into independent learners.
#satchat#collabclass
A3: When solving problems in our class we use @PaulSolarz strategies he outlines in #LearnLAP of Rock Paper Scissors, compromise or be kind! In most cases this solves the issue! #satchat
A2: As a 9th grade T in a HS district, I get to provide Ss with a fresh start. I don’t have any prior knowledge of their abilities or behaviors but do consider their story. I want to hear their perspective about their journey and from there we begin. #satchat
#satchat A3: In my classroom, SEL occurs every day. It's an ongoing process that often occurs in the French language: it lightens the mood, & still calls attention to the SEL. We start, though, w/a posted notice that we are in a safe space for all people & ideas.
A3: As district-level coordinator, I don't have one class or one school, so my focus on teaching SEL is often in one-on-one conversations that happen in the moment. My hope is that these help reinforce the SEL curriculum being taught by the classroom teachers. #satchat
We all have hearts; we all have brains; we all cry; we all laugh. If we remember that first, then you give the other person a chance. #satchat#collabclass
Here’s the problem. Focusing on similarities keeps people with power in power. By uncovering the differences, we start to see which differences have power in society, and which are marginalized. This is the beginning of SEL, because it recognizes the emotional impact #satchat
A3: I try to incorporate mindfulness into every day, by starting class with a deep breath; and teaching fuller lessons on “mindful mondays.” At first, my middle schoolers thought I was crazy, but by the end of the year, they were begging for more mindfulness lessons. #satchat
And they are showing you what they know in an authentic and meaningful way. Getting deeply into the work and connecting it to their own lives. You give them that opportunity :) #satchat#collabclass#RamPride
A3 This year it’s all about SEL and equity. Students in my history classes tackle real world issues and how they’re relevant to their daily lives through PBL(Immigration, social justice, etc) #satchat
A4. Equity says we differentiate the curriculum so that even our most advanced Ss are challenged & supported. Equity is about providing an environment for all learners that provides both support & challenge academically while attending to their needs. #collabclass#satchat
A4: I think equity exists through differentiation in our curriculum. Differentiation strategies help make sure that Ss have the supports they need to be successful in their learning #satchat
A4: Our English curriculum in my district includes writings from people of all walks of life. This allows Ss to see themselves as they read and buy in to the literature more often than not. Diversity in reading and writing are essential. #satchat
While some things are fairly constant, it's true that my classroom is becoming more diverse. If I have a Hindu student, I encourage them to correct my misprounciations, give us background on celebrations - ANYTHING to make his/her faith more real to my students. #satchat
A3: we teach a career based instruction class for every student. It includes interview skills, guest speakers on dating relationships, OSHA, budgeting, finance, workplace skills, self reflection practices, tying the amendments to workplace rights, & future planning #satchat
A4. One way of improving performance & preventing dropout is to identify at-risk students early & take action quickly. This means monitoring attendance, performance & involvement in school, & having a concrete response to improve outcomes & prevent dropout. #collabclass#satchat
A3: We also have quarterly class meetings to discuss things like intelligence, compassion, empathy and anything else that is going on when we are all together! All voices are heard and listened to! #satchat
One of the most important decisions we can make as leaders is to shift from a model of making our students fit into our systems to continually restructuring our systems to meet the needs of our current students.
No need to think outside the box. Just rebuild or remove the box.
But if we don’t recognize our experiences are valid for us, and those experiences are NOT normative for others, and their experiences and emotions are valid for them, we build compassion and empathy. We are all the same, but society does NOT treat us the same. #satchat
A3: As a principal I helped illuminate the backgd of staff to show the difference of our Ss by surveying a set of experiences to compare growing in different cultures and SES. (i.e. depend only on city bus for transpo) #satchat#collabclass
Thank you @DocCatto & company. What a great convo that I'll slowly scroll thru later. Son home from college insists that I go w/ him for diner pancakes so heading out now! Can't wait until our next chat. #satchat#collabclass
A4 We are working to rewrite our curricula to add more appropriate literature and give students more voice and choice in their experiences of learning #satchat
Yup. And at the root of accountability is distrust. I hold you accountable because I don't believe you are competent and/or don't trust you to do what I want you do. Ugh. What happens when we believe and trust? Certainly relationships and learning improve! #satchat
A3 Our youngest Ss have SEL embedded in their instruction thru their Panther Promises. These are related to their Codes of Cooperation & SOPs they created around personalized learning, but are grounded in principals of empathy and self-regulation. #satchat#collabclass
Yup. And at the root of accountability is distrust. I hold you accountable because I don't believe you are competent and/or don't trust you to do what I want you do. Ugh. What happens when we believe and trust? Certainly relationships and learning improve! #satchat
A4. We strive to ensure that we provide common experiences so all students get what they need to learn. Example- we are about to go 1:1 w/ tech and our district will provide WiFi at home for kids who currently do not have it. Proud of our district. #satchat
A3: Teaching SEL can involve use of short video clips in the Kinder classroom (e.g., Howard B. Wigglebottom) followed by discussions and role-playing of various scenarios. #satchat
A4: Equity exists in our curriculum by diversifying learning outcomes, differentiating instructional approaches, offering global perspectives, ensuring cultural diversity/sensitivity, challenging students to take supported risks. #satchat#collabclass
A3: Sorry - I've been forgetting to add #collabclass to my posts - got it now! In the classroom and the school, I first demonstrate SEL by my own behavior and actions. In trainings, I love to share "issues" and then have educators come up with strategies on their own. #satchat
Maybe the term could be changed in conversations to point out the importance of how we treat others instead of only fitting in the category of good or bad people? #satchat#collabclass
A3 It is only through the enacted curriculum that we have a chance to address equity. We as educators must value how we teach as much as what we teach. #satchat#collabclass
@DocCatto I was just thinking about the concept of creating those alliances that support the transition to being an independent learner #satchat#collabclass
A4: @Ready4rigor explains in her book how social justice within the classroom’s culturally responsive practices should focus on the T supporting students in growing from dependent learners into independent learners.
#satchat#collabclass
A4 Striving for equitable approaches to reading by blending student-chosen opportunities with shared ones & operating from premise that even when readers enter the same text, they need not go in the same door. (HT, @pernilleripp, for latter: https://t.co/kNHcNgwZ1t) #satchat
We need to understand society does NOT treat us all the same, and favors some of us (white, cisgender, heterosexual, men as examples) more than others. That would likely make you more prone to anger the more different you are from the center point #satchat
Righting historical wrongs & committing to removing barriers that have instituted because of those wrongs do are definitely barriers to equity. #satchat
...and even though "providing an environment for all learners that provides both support & challenge academically while attending to their needs" takes more time to plan && put into practice, the kids are so worth it! #collabclass#satchat
Good morning #satchat#collabclass ~ Late start
A4) I feel equity does not exist in the curriculum. I feel educators need to be intentional about finding material that speaks to all learners. @Tolerance_org has been a huge resource for me.
Interesting image. I use a similar one when teaching about ad writing--what beliefs can we change with an ad? Strongly held beliefs are near impossible. Getting to change your toothpaste, a lot easier. #satchat#collabclass
A2: Equity can most certainly be impacted by personal bias and a lack of time spent truly getting to know and understand those we serve and support. #satchat
So many interdisciplinary opportunities re: immigration! My 6th grade science PBL presented student teams w/case studies of sick immigrant children arriving at Ellis Island. Ss diagnosed based on symptoms, researched laws, public policy & medical treatments available. #satchat
A3 This year it’s all about SEL and equity. Students in my history classes tackle real world issues and how they’re relevant to their daily lives through PBL(Immigration, social justice, etc) #satchat
A4: There are two ways to look at this: content & process. We are digging into SEL practices in Being A Writer & it's been eye opening. We use Kagan structures and class/teambuilding to aim for equity across the day for students & professional learning.#satchat#collabclass
Totally agree with these comments. #accountability has become more of a "gotcha" than proving that you are capable of reproducing something. What have we done to our students? #satchat
The FBI 302s of Gen. Flynn interview shows Comey and Stroyk were not searching for the truth but setting a perjury trap for Flynn. It included misleading him about getting a lawyer, not refreshing his recollection and filing a false statement charge when FBI thought it wasn’t.
Honestly, I don’t think this work is about how we treat others, I think it’s all about how we treat ourselves. The shame spiral is what does a lot of our kids (and adults) in when it comes to SEL work. #satchat
I don't think we've ever intentionally assessed teachers' SEL or discussed it at length. Are there any reliable assessment tools all y'all would recommend? That could be a game changer in examining school culture! #collabclass#satchat
Josh, as someone who apparently carries the map of the world on her face, I am too often working to make people understand I am not different. #satchat#collabclass
A4: my small contribution to equity - my AP level class looks like the hallways of my school, everyone is welcome, my Ss get lots of support and feedback, making sure every Ss is exposed to rigor and has a chance to succeed and learn #satchat#collabclass
#satchat A4: We study French and Francophone cultures, therefore, it's kind of easy (yet must be intentional) to explore products, practices, and perspectives of a wide range of ppl.
A4 Equity exists in all the scaffolding built in to address a variety of S needs. There are also a variety of ways to teach/ assess a standard, skill, or strategy. It’s an ongoing work in progress, developing as we need to meet S needs. #satchat#collabclass
Love the quote & sentiment, yet inner editor in me can't help but notice: While students might eventually *reign* over their learning, they'll do this by taking over the *reins.* (I shake my fist at you, homophones!) #satchat
A4: student meet with their success coach, myself, college & career advisors & their guidance counselor to determine their personalized pathway to diploma, career choice and/or college/trade school. They all have an idea of their ideal future through success plans! #satchat
There is a saying, ‘Students do not care how much you know until they know how much you care’. If an educator can create a combination of high standards within a caring/supportive environment, all students should benefit. #collabclass#satchat
Q4: We are moving toward equity by ensuring we have a strong literacy program that gives our students foundational skills in an academic sense, but weaves it all together by fostering self-efficacy. Loving our implementation of Being A Writer. #collabclass#satchat
A5: I think oftentimes SEL is taught in an isolated silo (monthly character ed) and becomes “one more thing” to “do.” SEL shouldn’t be something we “do.” It should be embedded within our academic day consistently. This is the mission of @CollabClassroom#satchat#collabclass
Yes! I believe that equity is also about allowing students to recognize their own strengths and interests and use those to guide their own learning and growth! We must allow Ss to develop those life long learning skills so learning is desired not something done to them! #satchat
A3 It is only through the enacted curriculum that we have a chance to address equity. We as educators must value how we teach as much as what we teach. #satchat#collabclass
A4- If we are not careful the curriculum can not only get in the way of equity it can also get in the way of deep meaningful learning. It can hinder discussion, creativity, passion!!! Why do we box our Ts and Ss into such a pre prescribed learning path? #satchat
Yes! We need to know what it looks like and specific strategies to coach teachers so they learn how to shift their practice. Modeling and engaging in PD helps teachers experience equitable practices which nudges toward progress as well. #satchat#collclass
Valenzuela’s (1999) ‘Authentically Caring Framework’ makes educators aware of their relations with students that may either subtract from or add to their positive experiences of schooling. #collabclass#satchat
Congress leaves DC today. These useless Republicans won’t be back:
-Paul Ryan: Worst. Speaker. Ever.
-Orrin Hatch: Demented.
-Jeff Flake: Spineless.
-Bob Corker: Gutless.
-Dana Rohrabacher: Putin’s Rep.
-Trey Gowdy: Obsessed with Hillary.
Good riddance to all of these traitors.
A4: In order to be intentional in our planning of equitable practices in our curriculum, we must implement a rigorous CORE curriculum for all Ss despite their cognitive/achievement level. The learning is equal during core instruction! #satchat#SEL
A5: We plan for instruction that integrates SEL and academic learning by focusing on more than the content learning. Our instruction focuses on the big picture & instruction that fosters SEL through collaboration and communication #satchat
Q4: We are moving toward equity by ensuring we have a strong literacy program that gives our students foundational skills in an academic sense, but weaves it all together by fostering self-efficacy. Loving our implementation of Being A Writer. #collabclass#satchat
Sure thing--you should check our work out. We offer a stand alone #SEL program called Caring School Community and a K-6 literacy program Collaborative Literacy--each lesson (comprehension, writing, small group instruction) has dual goals --#SEL and academic. #Collabclass#satchat
Valenzuela (1999, p. 7) reasoned that ‘[t]he feeling that no one cares’ is pervasive—and corrosive... To genuinely care about students, educators must create classroom conditions that nurture educación’; a model of schooling premised on respectful and caring relations. #satchat
A5: Our instruction must model & explicitly teach what SEL skills and strategies look like, sound like, feel like. Providing space for children to discuss how something made them feel in that instruction or how to listen w/ empathy w/in the instructional day #satchat#collabclass
I’m not sure I do agree. Teaching black kids to think of things from the white kids perspective doesn’t seem equitable to me when they see teachers give more latitude to the emotions of white kids more than black kids. Just something I’m reflecting on #satchat
A4: In our @CollabClassroom resources Ss are explicitly taught SEL skills, given opportunities to practice & then encouraged to use throughout the day. We work to create indep lrns while teaching important LA strategies #satchat#collabclass@DocCatto
The important thing is to provide tools, resources and instructional experiences that help the students to gain the capacity to treat themselves and others in a way to help make them more productive citizens and socially aware of the best situational decision to make. #satchat

exactly and micro-managing by the privileged who steal agency and ownership as intangible goods that belong to the connected instead of the person who has the expertise. #satchat
A4: I agree. SEL should not be siloed away from other learning. But I think direct instruction of SEL can build a foundation that can woven into classroom instruction throughout the year. #satchat
Essential & interdependent feel like common-sense observations. Equivalent, in comparison, feels like radical statement that demands foundation-shaking re-prioritizing in ways many (most?) communities see their schools, especially the older the learners they serve. #satchat
I’m reflecting on the word “productive” here. I get we are trying to give our kids a pragmatic approach to what “works” in society, but where do we teach them that “what works” (acting more white, cisgender, heterosexual, male) really sucks and should be something we fix #satchat

@MsVandeborne, @specialtechie, @ApRuzich
we leave out a lot, but we are also restricted by time ... how we view historical figures and their importance models our society ... Frederick Douglass is way more than just a runaway slave. #satchat#collabclass
#satchat A5: We have six overarching themes across the curriculum in the world lang. dept. It is easier to plan for SEL in upper level classes as they can express themselves more in the lang. We must work harder to do the same at lower levels.
Saturday thought To all teachers (veterans and newbs). Never give up trying to be the best for ur Ss. No matter the negativity you face, the (you can’t do it like that) mentality, do what you know is best and right for your Ss. Be humble also but you know how ur kids learn. #nced
In general, educators have significant control over their T&L environment, & the impact on the daily experiences of students. Having an internationalised & diverse staff with international links is central to achieving a caring, comfortable & supportive environment. #satchat
#satchat Sorry to be late in joining all of you, but when it is over 40 degrees in December, you need to seize the opportunity for a long walk with your dog.
A5: Let S's revision & respond to essential questions from multiple PoV. How might we use this math/science concept to improve an aspect of our community? How might this story be told differently in a community unlike mine? How does that version challenge me? #satchat
Educator: Be courageous. Be vulnerable. Be spontaneous. Be CREATIVE. Be fun. Be strict when needed. Be PREPARED! Be loving. Be generous. Be honest & uplifting. Be fair. Be a dork. Be quick to help. Be a team. Do things different. Try some old ways. Be YOURSELF! #nced#2pencilchat

A4 As I read the responses of other, it occurs to me how many of the Personalized Learning practices (eg S voice and choice, learning pathways, etc) Ts in my district are employing are very closely related to equity. #personalizeSC#satchat
A5. The Second Step Program provides Ss with opportunities to practice successful approaches to academics that will also serve them in work settings & real-world problems. We use Second Step in our MS curriculum. #collabclass#satchat

Our Mock Caldecott unit reminds me of how social justice work is not a lesson or a unit. It is a way of being & seeing the world. It’s in the choices of books we choose to include in our units and the discussions we chose to have with our students about why we made those choices.
Sorry, friends, I have to check out early. We are going to get our first fresh-cut Cheistmas tree since 2008! (We had an artificial tree for two years then just used our little Charlie Brown tree because we were never home for Christmas.) New house, new traditions!🎄 #satchat

A4: My hope is that EQUITY is pervasive throughout all curricula ...not only germane to a single subject discipline or a certain series of lessons...should be based upon need, and ensure fairness for all, at all times! #satchat
Sometimes the simple act of allowing the time and space for them to voice their feelings allows them to clear out space to then focus on the academic tasks at hand. Once they cope with the emotion or dealt with the fear then can move forward. #Satchat#collab
Q5: When students are taught SEL with intentionality and given tons of experiences where they can apply their learning in a safe environment and regularly are asked to reflect on their progress, then we truly have a strong foundation for academic progress. #satchat#collabclass
A4: I try to practice equity by making sure all Ss are getting what they need to be successful, by valuing different ways Ss problem solve esp those who come from different countries... It's important to build in opportunities for Ss to feel confident #satchat
A5: Our district Student Services Director collaborates with all admin, the community, parents, and Ss to design SEL curriculum for our district that is taught through health class and completely student centered #satchat
A4 #satchat: honestly an #equity rubric that Professor/Author Lynda Tredway developed for public ed has been a huge influence on us reworking it for international Ed contexts.
A6: We can support equity to the deep culture level by being intentional with what we do. We cannot ignore the deep culture level, but rather recognize it and intentionally cultivate a culture of equity #satchat
A5. Adult learning with SEL is critical as must be aware of our biases w/ each other, connect at deeper levels and provide shared leadership within school to provide a community school experience. #satchat
#satchat A5: What social skills have been taught? What do I expect Ss to incorporate & practice? Which social skill best supports the academic focus? @DocCatto#collabclass
Except that that is, indeed, what works in the current climate through much of the States, so while the, um, dominant culture remains what it is (and we're part of it), teaching it as something *we* need to fix won't fly so long as we keep participating in it.

A6. As Duncan-Andrade and Morrell (2008, p. 52) fittingly stated, ‘nothing promotes border crossing or tolerance more than helping students arrive at an implicit understanding of what they have in common with those they have been taught to perceive as different’. #satchat
A5. Students write personal weekly goals for learning Spanish. Recently ran my 1st half marathon & shared my progress with students. They held me accountable for weekly progress and we all reflected weekly on our goals. #satchat#collabclass
A6: I was a surface level culture teacher when I was in the classroom. I didn’t even delve into shallow levels. I think one way to address deep culture is to consider cultural beliefs and norms before jumping to conclusions. Especially with behaviors. #satchat#collabclass
I think some people use the terms interchangeably. For me, differentiated learning is a means to personalized learning. Differentiation is one way you can personalize learning for Ss. #satchat
#satchat A6: In the World Language dept, as I said in my last tweet, culture is integral to what we do. In lower levels, it requires more scaffolding & short chunks to explore cultures, but we do look at all levels of culture.
So many thought provoking ideas here. Can we explore critical consciousness through the teaching of fractions & other core curriculum practices? Can we work with Ss to identify end goals - being fair, just citizens who act with courage and love? #satchat

#satchat A6 cont.: Young people love learning about other cultures, and their reactions to what they see & learn provide us with an excellent teachable moment.
#satchat - something this chat has sparked within me; is SEL the pragmatic approach where equity is the idealism side? A lot of the struggle is pragmatism rubbing up against idealism. It seems that is what we are talk about here? Am I off on that? #satchat
This sounds like equity without exception, and that strikes me as a potential oxymoron. But then again, so does pervasiveness with loopholes. Complex work to be done here. #satchat
A4: My hope is that EQUITY is pervasive throughout all curricula ...not only germane to a single subject discipline or a certain series of lessons...should be based upon need, and ensure fairness for all, at all times! #satchat
Just joined in on this very important topic. #sel is so comprehensive & all stakeholders must have equitable access to their social emotional growth #SatChat
A5) my district has been intentional on providing training & lessons around SEL to support teachers & administrators. We have also added it to all School Improvement Plans. SEL is for all of us ~ not just counselors! #satchat#Collabclass
#SatChat@MrKitMath is working through this equity and SEL work beautifully. I love that they managed to get definition around unkindness versus a good roast. 😂that’s a powerful middle grade move.
I said that I didn't know the exact wording of my proposal yet, but that we needed to think about how to be nicer to each other. I passed around my D100 & they took turned reading a reminder about the expectations & circle guidelines aloud. When it got back to me, I opened it up.
A6 For equity to be a part of deep culture we must examine routines & rituals of our culture that are exclusive and extricate them. Culture change requires a public agreement about who we are, who we want to be, and the part we each have in bringing that change #satchat#PCSi2i
‘Culture’ is the fundamental building block of ‘identity’ & the develop. of a strong cultural identity is essential to Ss' healthy sense of who they are & where they belong. Schools have an ideal forum to nurture, celebrate & reinforce Ss' unique cultural identit(ies). #satchat
A6: Just like when you try to go deep during class discussions to get S's to think critically, you have to be intentional as a teacher with your questioning. #satchat#collabclass Planning is key!
A6 #satchat Think the old Johari window is gr8 tool for T's & then S's to reflect on their own belief system & what they don't know about their beliefs as a way 2 understand others & empathy - SEL Helps create foundation 4 cultural literacy.
Agreed! Many years ago when i first became a tech director I assisted a teacher on teaching american revolutionary war. We did a email penpal project and found out that the British have a different perspective on the war! It was very eye opening for Ss and the teacher. #satchat

A6. Pedagogical preferences have to be (re)conceptualised in a manner that recognises and respects the intricacies of cultural difference. That is, to construct practices in ways that are culturally relevant, racially affirming, and socially meaningful for students. #satchat
I wonder how many teachers who engage with SEL understand the concept of Racial Battle Fatigue in their emotional frameworks? How does that impact the students in their classroom? #satchat#justreflecting

A6: equity vs perceived equity. Are we intentional but also are we are of the impact of our thoughts, words& actions? How are we working on our own biases? Weaknesses? We need to have opportunities to work on “our own stuff” to be most effective #SatChat
A6 True equity will happen when we are having honest conversations with ourselves and our Ss. When we are intentional and deliberate. #satchat#collabclass
It is crucial that Ts partake in critical discussions about their own perceptions of ‘effective’ communication in a cultural diverse classroom as cultural incongruence among Ts and Ss may be a/the prime factor that contributes to student withdrawal. #satchat
A6: Modeling, target talking, and reflection (student, teacher, peer) w/specific feedback will help us work toward internalizing practices. Our classroom is reflective of our world. If we embed SEL and help S's value practices, they will impact the future. #satchat#collabclass
A6: I think it goes back to relationships. Do we really get to know the Ss in our class? Do we listen & learn about their culture to understand their perspectives? #satchat#collabclass@DocCatto
A6 this is a tough one, atmosphere in the classroom -every S is loved, given voice, respected, Ss to find things in common, not focus on differences, if we think of we and our classroom, then we can be ourselves yet be part of a bigger whole #satchat#collabclass

1) How do I reflect on my own cultural norms and school experiences, and how have these informed my teaching?
2) How do I try to educate myself about my students’ home cultures and their experiences and contributions throughout history?
Thanks, #satchat, for the engaging discussion this morning! I’m going to go back through all replies & follow many new PLN friends!
For anyone interested in learning more about how SEL can be integrated into literacy curriculum, check out @collabclass. We love convos with you!
A6: I've always tried to learn as much about my population of students & their families, cultures, traditions as possible. My goal was/is to create a place where all my students feel at home. Working on the Navajo Rez and in AK meant doing lots of research. #satchat#collabclass
#satchat I don't think you're off on that. I believe that punitive grading practices prevent us from providing our students w/the opportunity to see us model an equitable approach to learning.
Q6 We can support equity by being courageous enough to have uncomfortable conversations, by listening to a different point of view, be immersing ourselves in other cultures through reading, community visits, home visits etc.. @chrisemdin offers some excellent ideas #satchat
A6: Just like when you try to go deep during class discussions to get S's to think critically, you have to be intentional as a teacher with your questioning. #satchat#collabclass Planning is key!
A6. #satchat
1) What culture(s) do I identify with and in what ways was my prior education culturally responsive or not?
2) What questions may I reflect upon to examine my own biases towards diversity and cultural responsiveness?
Yes! Relationships are step 1, and you can't go to step 2 until you have them. That works in so many parts of our world, if not all of them. #satchat#collabclass
A6: Guide students and educators to explore those deep culture mores about the characters they read about and the historical figures they study and provide them with a wide array of diversity, thus leading to self-reflection and increased awareness. #satchat#CollabClass
Shared w/ staff member “how proud I was of their personalized learning and innovative practices”. I learned they have persevered thru challenges. Best way to support staff is having authentic discussions/deepening trust. @clegleiter#satchat#leadupchat#leadlap#tlap#edchat
"I know what he is.
I know that he is just a mirror.
He has simply revealed clearly the disfigured ugliness of the place I call home and the people I live here alongside—and that is the thing I grieve over."
