Hi #satchat Peter, software developer and publisher from England. As a tech publisher, this is going to be an interesting hour or so. BTW, love the gameboard - useful for some meetings i do!
"In these very seconds, you and I get to decide whether our children and grandchildren will inherit something beautiful or grotesque. It's really that simple, that elemental, that close."

It must be Saturday morning because #satchat is on and we are about get into some early morning fun with “gamification”! Chris here from Ontario, 🇨🇦, K teacher.
Good Morning #satchat Kevin, 7th Grade History Teacher from NW NJ finally back here since my daughter's soccer game was switched to the afternoon due to field conditions
A1: When I hear the term "gamification" I think of engagement and excitement. Games allow you to practice problem solving and critical thinking skills without making it seem like arduous work. They involve competition and often an opportunity to connect with others. #satchat
A1 I think of multiple tries for mastery, quick learning/adjustments turnarounds, progressively difficult challenges, levels...all the above are addicting; the video game industry sinks billions of dollars into the psychology of their games #satchat
A1) I think about incorporating games in the learning taking place in the classroom. Games tend to increase engagement creatively & we all tend to love a little healthy cognitive competition #Satchat
A1) honestly, I think of @TechedUpTeacher — he was rocking the term a few years back and made me think. Now seeing that it is apart of our nomenclature, folks need to understand what it means. #satchat
A1: Utilizing play, discovery, and adventure to engage students in the content. Games are fun because there is a sense of purpose and accomplishment. The goal and objective is usually very clear. #satchat
A1: gamification can create high-interest, investment in meeting a challenge, teamwork, problem solving and allow for formative assessment info collection #satchat
"Simply by my steady volume, my refusal to nurture falsehoods, my insistence on calling out hypocrisy, my intolerance to hatred—I am probably forever altering the connection between us.
I'm going to have to risk this."
#SaturdayMorning#SatChathttps://t.co/EodIkW8WpW
A1: I've never been too sure of gamificaiton in education and then as this chat was developing it became fun... just like a game and in the process, I learned something!
#satchat
It’s like taking the learning targets and progression of learning and putting into a game form where you get some acknowledgement of teaching the next level. A series of small goals achieved is motivati toan of us! #satchat
A1 My initial thought when hearing gamification is creating a game. Upon further review, it is using/creating a game to engage students with critically thinking skills and to think about improving their strategies while mastering new skills. #satchat

A1: Gamification is really just adding elements or the mechanics of a game to something that isn’t one. I think as humans, we’re naturally motivated by some of the things games give us: community, knowledge, power, happiness, etc #satchat
A1: I am a total board game nerd. Gamification is basically incorporating game elements into instruction. Why is it fun? Working or playing with others, trying to win and lots of engagement along the way. #satchat
Glad to be here as always — and not a selfie but a fav shot of a learne from @herz6kids Iowa district from a few weeks ago - kids get to pick background music from a playlist in this class #satchat
Gamification gave me a new way to connect and create relationships with my learners. It gave my learnersa chance to grow and try new things in a low stakes but engaging environment. #satchat
A1: When I hear gamification I think of Microcredentialing (badging). Ss today live in a gaming world where they can earn badges for accomplishments. When you can take this concept and add it into the classroom it allows you to level up your teaching. #satchat

A1: When I hear the term "gamification" I think of engagement and excitement. Games allow you to practice problem solving and critical thinking skills without making it seem like arduous work. They involve competition and often an opportunity to connect with others. #satchat
A1: games were designed to increase socialization. Respecting others, honoring rules and solving problems independently created a fun way to practice navigating human interactions and life skills. #satchat
A1. Gamification is about providing students the opportunity to problem solve in a fun and engaging way. Utilize play/discovery to personalize. #satchat
A1: Games help teach a variety of important life skills...collaboration, quick thinking, and perseverance. They increase engagement for the simple fact that games are fun. #satchat
A1 I think of taking something mundane and making it more fun! Like a spoonful of sugar. I like to play games because I have a little bit of a competitive streak! #satchat@MeehanEDU@ScottRRocco#winning
A1: This graphic has helped to inform my understanding of “gamification”. Games make learning fun, can be collaborative, teach us about role-taking, invite experiences that may take us beyond our daily living. #satchat#gamification#tlap#growthmindset#SaturdayMorningGroove
A1 I remember great board game nights with my family as a child. Such a fantastic bonding experience with so many life lessons embedded into them #satchat
A1: Competiton, thinking on your feet, application of concepts. Games make your brain think in a different way and problem solve. Plus a little friendly competition can light a 🔥 under you!
#satchat
A1: I think of making learning fun! It's enjoyable because you are able to have choices, be creative, usually work with other students/teachers, and have some good competition! #satchat
A1: Interactive, designed for the user experience, immersive, all about the experience, layers, challenging, leveling up, multi-tiered, personalization and Easter Eggs! #satchat
Question from the room: what do we do with students that don’t follow the rules? How do we reach them and keep them in the gamification process? #satchat
Up early for a flight so finally in with #satchat from Phoenix, AZ
A1: When j hear “gamification”, I think of fun and the word play. So often we are afraid to play just for play’s sake and learning can be attacked with an attitude of play!
A1: gamification to me means missions to be accomplished, finding alternative routes & possibilities, colabw/ others , colorful& animated learning #satchat
A2: My favorite game was always Clue or Guess Who. The Guess Who game play is perfect for practicing vocabulary words. Ss can ask yes or no questions to determine parts of speech, definition, and more to guess the vocabulary word. #satchat
"Christians need to stop passing the buck to God, and own the compromises and sick bedfellows they've been willing to make for Supreme Court seats, anti-LGBTQ legislation, and a rapidly assembling white Christian theocracy."
#SaturdayMorning#SatChathttps://t.co/go67YHhesG
#satchat My favorite game was "Explore Europe" a game involving math, and visiting nice places (I am sure there is an Explore America version out there)
A1 gamification reminds me that humans have been gamers for milennia - baked into our DNA - games are fun and when you finish you get the chance to play again and again - and get better and better - master learning! #satchat (ahh math- Mesopotamian dice and stick game)
A1. Gamification is presenting a series of challenges that provide some level of competition (beating your own score is acceptable) and you can move through levels (or learning targets). #satchat
#satchat#music Musical Memory for September 29th: Today in 1973, Grand Funk Railroad went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'We're An American Band', the group's first of two US chart toppers. More @ https://t.co/p33Pe4wTJ8 Please Share!
Do you feel like the younger generations are as competitive as the past? I feel that the answer is no as most do not know how to lose gracefully. They either cause a scene or quit. Losing is a skill that students need to master. #satchat
A1: Competiton, thinking on your feet, application of concepts. Games make your brain think in a different way and problem solve. Plus a little friendly competition can light a 🔥 under you!
#satchat
A2: My favorite toys and games where the action figures that I could make up stories with. I always had a narrative playing in my head. I really try to connect students tot he narratives of their lives in the classroom. They are heroes in a hero’s journey #satchat
A2. I enjoyed chess - loved the strategy, challenge and learning that “a hard game could be fun”. Bringing this into the class provides engaging activities where diff abilities and perspectives can be successful. Reinforces so many skills. #satchat
Morning #satchat Debbi from NJ jumping in late. #gamification is a bit different for me since I teach Multimedia & Game Development. Gaming means making video games in my class. it's my favorite:)
A2: Hungry, Hungry Hippos and Lincoln Logs were my favorites! #satchat Not sure how I could use it in school besides just being fun! Lincoln Logs are easy to tie in with building challenges. I'll be looking for those after this chat!
Yep. Me too!! I loved putting the pink and blue peg “babies” in my back seat. Which, after having two pink pegs of my own, I realize the game of life was mildly unrealistic. #satchat
A2) I was a huge Ninentdo fan (and may or may not play 3x a week). I always thought video games could have an impact. When I taught history, I used PS3 & Nintendo games to model everything from the Bill of Rights to having Ss play The Oregon Trail! #satchat
I would say they are even more competitive which is WHY they struggle to lose graciously. They put so much pressure on them selves and we have to teach them how to fail with grace and sel-compassion #satchat
Same here! Although my pegs are two pink and a blue! I did love the careers and houses and salaries and all that stuff...made me feel so grown up #satchat
Glad to be here as always — and not a selfie but a fav shot of a learne from @herz6kids Iowa district from a few weeks ago - kids get to pick background music from a playlist in this class #satchat
A2: My favorite toys were my chalkboard/magnet set, books and dolls. I used to teach to my own class. Give students an opportunity to be the teacher and teach other students! They enjoy being the expert. #satchat
Hi Jay! Have your Jersey card ready to turn in. It’s pork roll and gamification is the use of game mechanics in non-game contexts. Game-based learning is teaching and assessing with video games. #satchat#WordsMatter
Q2 I loved Barbie & all her accessories. Similarly, students like creating scenes w cardboard construction, magnetic tiles, Legos, and green screen activities. #satchat
A2: The Game of Life! I envision using this game as a unit; what do expenses look like for a different # of family members, what options do you have after high school, etc #satchat (oh and of course Tamagotchi) 😄
A1 Gamification is about taking the elements that make games fun and addicting (in a good way) and implementing those into a learning environment. It amounts to points and badges and ranking and challenges. #satchat
A2 Have brought modified several games for the classroom, including Battleship for reading a grid, Diplomacy for WWI, and various board games w/out rules to display the necessity of laws, all wrapped up in an overarching baseball season that my students participate #satchat
A2 I never really had a favorite, as I was always searching for the next better game. Right now, Blokus is my favorite, as it creates a high floor/higher ceiling activity for critical thinking and strategic planning. I have 5 of these games in my classroom. #satchat
My favorite game was Your America board game with categories of history questions played with my sisters. Found one sister would study the Q& A’s before we played. #satchat
A1 Learning through a fun, stimulating challenge. The experience of gamification, leaves Ss wondering if they are playing or working. Competition against self or others is the driving force. #satchat
A2) Clue, Risk, Battleship, Monopoly and Life were my favorite board games. I liked thinking and strategizing. You can use these concepts when working with students and adults. #satchat
A1: I'm an English teacher and I will admit this is a tremendous area of growth potential for me. I'm not a huge video/board/card game fan in general - but I know Ss love them. Going to listen and ask questions for most of the chat. #satchat
A2: A favorite board game of mine was always Clue. I actually did a lesson like this when we were learning about famous Americans in my 2nd grade classroom. I used Microsoft Access and then made up clues. Ss collaborated then had to create a Wanted Poster for the answer. #satchat
A2: I loved action figures of all sorts. @jedikermit has some great stuff on using having students making historical action figures. For example what kind of accessories would James Madison have, or Abraham Lincoln? What would the description on the box say? #Satchat
A2: I enjoyed card games. Playing these games in the classroom can help students develop social-emotional skills, especially for students who may struggle with these, because of the natural way it can become part of the classroom. #satchat
A2: one of my fondest memories as a child in the 80s was a history teacher helping us make OUR OWN game as a class, centered around history. That was cool. So cool. #SatChat
A2: My favorite games as a child were probably sorry, different card games and anything I could play on the Apple IIe - Lemonade stand anyone? #satchat
A2 LOVED @LEGO_Group as well! I used to follow the kit directions to the T! My mom is actually sending my old LEGOs to my son for christmas this year. she still has them! #satchat
A2 Have brought modified several games for the classroom, including Battleship for reading a grid, Diplomacy for WWI, and various board games w/out rules to display the necessity of laws, all wrapped up in an overarching baseball season that my students participate #satchat
A2: A favorite board game of mine was always Clue. I actually did a lesson like this when we were learning about famous Americans in my 2nd grade classroom. I used Microsoft Access and then made up clues. Ss collaborated then had to create a Wanted Poster for the answer. #satchat
A2 Favorite childhood game would be monopoly. I used it to teach AP economics in class we played and kids had to term actions taken by players and define what they did. #satchat
I was just talking the other day about how I used to play a lot of chess when I was in high school. It teaches so many important skills like critical thinking and problem solving. #Satchat
Totally agree. I see just with attention spans, frustration thresholds are shorter especially in my younger ones. However, games are a great way to have these conversations of how to handle teamwork, losing gracefully, and rethinking strategies. #satchat
A1: This graphic has helped to inform my understanding of “gamification”. Games make learning fun, can be collaborative, teach us about role-taking, invite experiences that may take us beyond our daily living. #satchat#gamification#tlap#growthmindset#SaturdayMorningGroove
A2: I always liked Chutes and Ladders. This game can combine academic content along w/ the fun of luck/chance as Ss make their way to the top of the board. #satchat
A2. Just saw a SS teacher playing Stratego. I just loved that game as a kid. Teacher told me that it was actually part of the curriculum for his military history class. LOVE IT!
#satchat
A3: Part of my math workshop model includes math games. We also include digital breakouts and BreakoutEDU lessons into our units to encourage social interaction and collaborative problem solving. #satchat
A2 dominoes and I learned a lot of math conceptually and visually from playing dominoes w family - cheap domino sets are easy to find and integrate into a gaming center in the library or class .. also helpful for English language learners #satchat
I’m was and am still obsessed with board games...Life, Monopoly, Scrabble..you name it! I ❤️how they bring people together in an experience with any level, play them over & over w/ a different experience every time. I ❤️ integrating same principles in the classroom. #satchat
Running a game-based/themed classroom works when you have administrators who allow teachers the freedom to innovate for the sake of their students. Thank you being one of them @TheBradCurrie#satchat
A2) Monopoly, Yahtzee, Scrabble and just about any other word game were my faves as a child (and even still)! Regional versions of Monopoly (eg Bancopoly) reach geography & culture! #satchat
Nothing better than the productive struggle, just up to frustration. When frustrated, I normally ask if they have really tried everything. This normally results in additional opportunities to try. #satchat
I'm using this to help explain why our school-wide reading project is not going to be counting books but playing games. Literacy comes in all forms.
#SatChat
A1: This graphic has helped to inform my understanding of “gamification”. Games make learning fun, can be collaborative, teach us about role-taking, invite experiences that may take us beyond our daily living. #satchat#gamification#tlap#growthmindset#SaturdayMorningGroove
Good morning! Katina, special educator from Maryland. There are many things that make games appealing. For one it’s healthy competition which is fun! #satchat
A2: My favorite games as a child were probably sorry, different card games and anything I could play on the Apple IIe - Lemonade stand anyone? #satchat
Gamification hits one of the four pillars of motivation; 3 are outlined in one of my Top 5 books of all time--and I'm a HUGE reader--Drive by Dan Pink #satchathttps://t.co/UyD2vLZETe
A1: This graphic has helped to inform my understanding of “gamification”. Games make learning fun, can be collaborative, teach us about role-taking, invite experiences that may take us beyond our daily living. #satchat#gamification#tlap#growthmindset#SaturdayMorningGroove
A3: I have a problem with the premise--"Most gamers play simply for the joy of social interaction." I doubt that's true, and there are issues with e-gaming related to its social aspect. But that's an issue for another #satchat....
A3 This year's group actually does a great job of advertising when they are going to start a new game, in order to allow opportunities for all their peers to play (as long as there are spots). #satchat
Just got #Gaming headphones for my #gamers so they can use @discordapp to chat while they play. Kids even invited me to their chat. We can share links & resources. But I can monitor the chat too;)
#satchat
Great ? - I don't think everything has to be a game, but sometimes it can be fun. Also, I could see a bingo board idea for writing a paper - like a fun version of a rubric. Squares could say things like used a great hook as an opening, used figurative lang, etc. #satchat
If I can just get a Evil Knievel stunt bike I had as a kid(I still have the doll) and figure out a way to fit into my curriculum, that would be awesome. Loved jumping my Hot Wheels/Matchbox cars. #satchat
Fortnite is blocked in my district ... sad part, the entire Epic package is blocked. I had kids working their sandbox last year and then it got blocked. #satchat
A3: I think this Q gets to the core of Gamification in Education. It's not the playing of the game that matters. It's the interaction between students. The understanding of rules, process, and fair play. #satchat
A3: My class enjoys peer to peer play through chants, collaboration and playful activities. They help me create the game so I ensure that they enjoy them. #satchat
A2: As a child, I loved games that involved strategy, and NOT luck. Anyone remember Capture the Flag? There is nothing as fulfilling as plotting #satchat
I have also seen battle ship as a review game. Questions were hidden on the gird. When opponent landed on the questions n they had to answer it to sink the ship. If not, they had to give the location of one of their ships. #satchat
A2: many of my faves have already been discussed. I'd pose this question: how many different benefits can be derived from each of these various classic games? Social-emotional (@Krista_Leh), math, reading, reasoning, creativity... What else? #satchat
A3: I think this is something that I can level up on #punintended - we play through creative projects and I do some puzzles and clue-based games but I would like to do more #satchat
If I can just get a Evil Knievel stunt bike I had as a kid(I still have the doll) and figure out a way to fit into my curriculum, that would be awesome. Loved jumping my Hot Wheels/Matchbox cars. #satchat
A3: I'm a relief teacher so I get to see all sorts of games & interaction in a variety of classes & grades. Love hearing the discussions, manipulations, justifications, thought processes, kind words. #satchat
A2 I used to, and still do, love the old video games. My Ss are going to construct vintage console/joystick combos using @Raspberry_Pi . Working on funding now, but it WILL happen. #satchat
Have you considered making the students CREATE the game? I worked with an 8th grade social studies teacher who had student groups create their own board games for review & then play each other's games.
#satchat
A2 Monopoly! So many opportunities to teach life skills, financial literacy, global awareness, & social responsibility. BUT the game goes on for days! #Satchat
A blog post I wrote about gamifying PD, using gaming students as examples of successful group work, and create a year-long maker challenge for teachers to keep the fun going https://t.co/sBDMyzBETL
Thanks to @micahshippee for the #leeroyjenkins inspiration #satchat
A3: I think this Q gets to the core of Gamification in Education. It's not the playing of the game that matters. It's the interaction between students. The understanding of rules, process, and fair play. #satchat
A3 thing about games is that it is not work ... it seems that there is a clear purpose to doing what they are doing. Unfortunately, education rarely has this much clarity in the learning process. #satchat
A3: Games allow students to interact in ways they may not have previously done before and bring awareness to how encouragement and team work makes a difference. #satchat
If I can just get a Evil Knievel stunt bike I had as a kid(I still have the doll) and figure out a way to fit into my curriculum, that would be awesome. Loved jumping my Hot Wheels/Matchbox cars. #satchat
We ❤️ improvisational games at my school - especially those related to the Destination Imagination program that foster #Imagination & #creativity! #satchat#idodi
"Dear women,
We simply do not see you as valuable—at least not as valuable as the status quo we're protecting or the legislation we're coveting or the religion we're perpetuating or the votes we're needing."
#SaturdayMorning#SatChathttps://t.co/z7mBO8ntWC
A3 I think that games are played for a lot of reasons including intermittent reinforcement which is powerful to keep people coming back / but also to interact socially, to win, to take risks, to learn, to take a break from other stuff #satchat
We need leaders to allow more “guys/ladies” like him, to improve/have fun in edu, instead of being the “way it’s always been done”. Need more visionary leaders instead of traditional operators. #satchat
In reply to
@MaireCervenak, @NeelDesaiBA, @PaulONeill1972, @Msalvatore2012, @HerrAndersonWT, @DisruptedTv, @ProfJPizzo, @ScottRRocco
A3: I taught my students chess every year.We held tournaments every Friday and bracket boards were hung around the room. It is an independent game that relies on another human to create for you. My Ss were kinder, more respectful and simply more engaged with each other.#satchat
A4: The digital breakout sandbox! It is always my go to when trying to find an engaging introduction or review activity for a unit. The digital breakouts are engaging and offer a hands on approach to a formative assessment. https://t.co/Zdy1eLgftk#satchat
A3 My goal is to replicate the diminishing playground experience in the classroom where the thrill/disappointment of winning/losing wasn't as great as the playing. When playing a game in class, I rarely emphasize the reward if there is any. #satchat
If you haven't looked at these parent guides to grade level frameworks/outcomes https://t.co/hLcm7qqWHO OR these LOOK Fors https://t.co/cX70gG1hNm, take a peek! They provide an entry point for ALL into the learning and expectations for our schools! #satchat#msaachat
A3:Kids have said to me they love competitions in class. We used goose chase in class for lab safety & getting to know your school & Ss have designed board games with content in class so other Ss can play #SatChat
I definitely agree that all those social-emotional benefits are essential (and, arguably, the most valuable benefits). But, I also don't want to diminish the literal academic skills that many games can bolster in organic ways. #satchat
A3: As an instructional Coach now my classroom and Ss are different, so I am still trying to figure this one out bringing the concept of peer-peer play into my PD's besides just having them talk with each other. Trying to bring microcredentailing into it, but any ideas? #satchat
A2: many of my faves have already been discussed. I'd pose this question: how many different benefits can be derived from each of these various classic games? Social-emotional (@Krista_Leh), math, reading, reasoning, creativity... What else? #satchat
I love the idea of gamification. I just want to know how students go from games to being able to wrestle with the hard tasks. Life is not always a game. #satchat
I used to get competitive with games and had to learn very young to chill out. :) I agree with you. There can be problems here. However, I think that it can be a learning opportunity to teach kids not to take themselves too seriously. Def. a discussion worth having. #satchat
I always loved one quote about my game filled classroom from an end of year survey by a student "His whole class is a game & it makes you think differently" #satchat
I like “to take a break from other stuff” — that’s an important component. We all need to take a break; it keeps us healthy and opens up the creative flow. #Satchat
A3 I think that games are played for a lot of reasons including intermittent reinforcement which is powerful to keep people coming back / but also to interact socially, to win, to take risks, to learn, to take a break from other stuff #satchat
It also allowed me to interact with and create relationships with my kids in ways I couldn’t without gamification. It is valuable on many fronts. #satchat
That is a nice thought ... my district won't lift the Social Media block for teachers, pretty certain Epic Games is a battle I won't even come close to winning. #satchat
Excellent call. If you’re feeling REALLY ambitious- why not consider having one class section design a @breakoutEDU for a rival class section to complete?! #satchat
Have you considered making the students CREATE the game? I worked with an 8th grade social studies teacher who had student groups create their own board games for review & then play each other's games.
#satchat
A4: I love the flexibility of using #googleslides with T's and S's. You can do so many things with it and include the 4C's every day. #satchat Right now, I'm working on a poetry slide deck so T's can use it in class or save as a PDF (page size) and send home to parents. #gttribe
#satchat We publish software and find #kids really like games - we were proud of our Pirate and Roman Adventures - where children use their math skills to solve problems as they travel around, so they go beyond just what is the answer to X
A4: My favorite tech tool is @Flipgrid. It allows the Ss and Ts to collaborate in communicating their ideas and get direct feedback from the Ts and their peers. It allows the Ss to understand that their #studentvoiceismagic. #satchat
Agreed! -Games are a great brain break for students even though they are “secretly” learning valuable skills like critical thinking, developing strategies, communication skills and patience. #satchat
A3 I think that games are played for a lot of reasons including intermittent reinforcement which is powerful to keep people coming back / but also to interact socially, to win, to take risks, to learn, to take a break from other stuff #satchat
Hands down @unity3d is awesome! It's very challenging. Has math, physics, music, art oh yeah and coding all in one place!
And it's FREE!
#gaming#satchat
A3: Peer-to-peer play is our reality in our K class. An amazing experience just to watch, listen and ask questions (but not too many) as my students engage is play together! I learn so much about them...we build community together! Play supports different learners! #satchat
I think relief teachers or substitute teachers should always have a few board games, decks of cards, dice, Yahtzee games or ice-breaker style bingo games with them for the times they show up and there are no plans for them or the plans left are untenable. #satchat
So this is AA2, or Aa2, or A2a: board games in general build social and self-management skills. Sharing, caring, decision-making, organization, strategic thinking. #satchat
I haven’t seen it yet; I wonder if “Where in The World is Carmen San Diego” might be a useful game for Geography class. And. And. Students each do a rockapella performance. #SatChat#gameTVcrossover
A4: My favorite teaching tech tool is honestly any one that my kids want to use. If they suggest one and are happy to use it, we are going to use it! They are into the activity, learning, and happy! #satchat
Luckily, we are able to use Twitter and Google+ now. #satchat Hopefully they will stop blocking things for adults just because of the few who can't use it appropriately.

Late to the chat but I’ve really enjoyed @GetKahoot in class. The kids love it and it’s a great way to review material or introduce new vocab in an exciting way. Kids love the game show type atmosphere #Satchat
Q4 Students visiting the library love @PlayOsmo Words, Numbers, and favorite Pizza. Just introduced Cubetto playset & Code-a-Pillar to the littles w great success. #satchat#TLsElevate
So true Jay / when I wrote my dissertation in 1996 - I came home from work as elem principal, played Tetris 20 minutes, then started writing often past midnight .. I attributed getting it done to Tetris reigniting my brain after work! #satchat
My 6th graders LOVED playing Quizlet Live today! They were engaged entirely as they worked together to determine the answers to review questions.
@quizlet#edchat
A4) I observed a great lesson with @telegram last week. As much as we loathe messaging apps, I saw a lesson on identifying what these messaging apps are, how they work, and any pitfalls. #Satchat
I have used the Kahoot smasher during a training ... it was a bit humorous when the trainer had a bunch of extra people playing of course she looked right me and asked "Did you do that?" ... #BadTeacherPrank#satchat
A4. My kids loved @gimkit and I loved how easy it was to set up. The last day of school my kids asked me if I would stat a Gimkit game for them. It really was powerful. #satchat
A1: Gamification isn't just task specific, it's process driven. This is so important for student learning and achievement. When we design activities that gamify our content, we are asking students to take and apply it to mastery level while self regulating. #satchat#Powerful
A4. Huge fan of @breakoutEDU - it provides students with the opportunity to problem solve, collaborate and think critically. It is also fun and engaging. #satchat
Gamification gets to the nitty gritty details. It doesn't take away the need for practice (like writing). The best classes mix it up. Gamify learning sentence structure. Have students peer review writing. Read diff things - not just books. Explore writing structures. #satchat
A4: there are so many tech tools like Kahoot and Quizziz that work well. But the best game I ever integrated into my curriculum wasn’t anything tech—chess. Chess is quite the metaphor. I used it as a vehicle to help students learn a world of things #Satchat
A5: Gamification allows Ss who are not traditionally successfully on tests to feel successful. We start math off with a 5 minute warm up review game to build confidence. With a more positive mindset, the Ss are more engaged and positive in the whole group math lesson. #satchat
RT @ChrisQuinn64: A1: This graphic has helped to inform my understanding of “gamification”. Games make learning fun, can be collaborative, teach us about role-taking, invite experiences that may take us beyond our daily living. #satchat#gamification #… https://t.co/Ogi8Ph7HYn
RT @DebbiSab: Morning #satchat Debbi from NJ jumping in late. #gamification is a bit different for me since I teach Multimedia & Game Development. Gaming means making video games in my class. it's my favorite:)
A4: Though I've used it more in higher Ed and PD situations, I love audience participation tools, like https://t.co/PYJ3S4MlbZ. There are many different audience participation tools available, many even allowing response through #Twitter. #satchat
Tetris is still my go to on my phone! It’s my brain break. Right before defending my dissertation, I was all about playing monopoly online. Why? No clue. But it got to relax and refocus. #satchat
Try holding on the image and see if it will ask you to save to photos. Then attach photo. Otherwise on iPad's you can hold the screen button and the side button for a screenshot and then attach

Every class I've been called to cover has all sorts of items to use for games - but not all classrooms have these kind of supplies unfortunately. These are easy items to have kicking around & a little bit of creativity in thinking - lots of games can be created & played. #satchat
A5: Gamification allows Ss who are not traditionally successfully on tests to feel successful. We start math off with a 5 minute warm up review game to build confidence. With a more positive mindset, the Ss are more engaged and positive in the whole group math lesson. #satchat
Oh my goodness! So funny you mentioned it. This week, my freshmen introduced me to it. They are having fun using it to make study guide games for an upcoming test. I LOVE it!! #satchat
A4: there are so many tech tools like Kahoot and Quizziz that work well. But the best game I ever integrated into my curriculum wasn’t anything tech—chess. Chess is quite the metaphor. I used it as a vehicle to help students learn a world of things #Satchat
Yes! Using games allow for Ss to not feel pressured to get a grade or be judged by their performance. After all its only a game, just kidding! #satchat
A1: I think of setting goals or achievements for the students to obtain. The students have something to strive for and know how to achieve it. #SatChat
A5: Direct, Instant Feedback is huge and one of the reasons Ss love video games, so much. Gamifying your classroom allows the Ss to get this feedback. They can try and then automatically know if they were sjuccessful or not, then "hit reset" if they need to try again. #satchat
A5: based on my observations at Chuck E Cheese (I have six kids) I’d say having tickets to win for prizes is a STRONG motivator. If they can get me to spend $10 to win a 10 cent prize; imagine what they’d be willing to learn to collect tickets to win that same prize #SatChat
A2: Every unit, I bring in a bin of my sons toys and do an acitivity call The Black Box Connection. Students have to randomly choose an item. They use their item to think about the new content they are learning and find a way that their item relates to it symbolically. #satchat
A4 and we have to include @scratch where kids can code their own games as important to the convo - how do kids become game designers and makers w hands on and virtual games #satchat
A5 games allow teacher to observe hard to measure skills like compromise and flexible thinking and provide a new context for students to reflect on their strengths and how they apply to learning #satchat
Love Tetris! I have the graphic novel that tell the history of the game. Still trying to figure out a way to incorporate it into my curriculum.
#satchat
Tetris is still my go to on my phone! It’s my brain break. Right before defending my dissertation, I was all about playing monopoly online. Why? No clue. But it got to relax and refocus. #satchat
A4: Twitter is truly an amazing teaching tech tool...linking us to other learners around the world...sharing wisdom and experiences that take us well beyond the walls of our building! #satchat
A5) Game-based feedback may function as real-time coaching and generally allows players to adapt and re-strategize mid-game. Sounds a bit like assessing as learning. #satchat
A5 (1) I despise grades (2) gamification promotes in the moment adjustments that lead to success instead of waiting for however long to get a grade...which IS NOT FEEDBACK #satchat
Students created their own Kahoot quizzes on the #GeniusHour topics they researched. They played them with their peers after presenting.
@GetKahoot
#edchat#satchat
A5: game play is the easiest formative assessment you can use with the most valuable information. Are my Ss following rules? Are they able to understand rules? Do they engage in conversation with their peers? So much we can learn about a child through gaming. #satchat
A4: there are so many tech tools like Kahoot and Quizziz that work well. But the best game I ever integrated into my curriculum wasn’t anything tech—chess. Chess is quite the metaphor. I used it as a vehicle to help students learn a world of things #Satchat
Great idea. I think it's important for Ts (and admin who evaluate them) to find ways to use gamification "data" to support their assessment of student progress. Even so far as grading Ss, if there is an insistence on quantifying everything. #satchat
A5 Gamification allows for students to get feedback and take risks in a low risk environment bc grades are not affected in some of the games played, especially the review games. #satchat
Really, I can be as well. I have taken a hold of the growth and innovator's mindset for the classroom. At first, I thought, "Gamification will wreck this plan." However, I think that if it is handled well, there is personal growth that happens with its use. #satchat
A1: Gamification to me means the process of taking something that already exists – a website, mobile app, game – and integrating game mechanics into it to motivate students to participate and engage in learning #satchat
A2- I was a huge He-man kid and the castle greyskull playset was amazing! I think I liked the ability to immerse myself in the story and toys that match the tv show weee what drew me so in my classroom creating emmersive history experiences is important #satchat
Q4 I love the SATCHAT Bingo! We use tech tools during our professional learning to model how coaches and teachers can do this with teachers and students. We use Canvas as our LMS along with kahott, padlet, answergarden, pollev to name a few, to engage learners. #satchat
Same here! Kahoot seems to change every adult to being a child again. Have done in my workshops and it is amazing how much fun the attendees seem to get out of the game and presentation. #satchat

A4: I love Digital Breakouts via Google Sites. They are a hit b/c they encourage the use of many different Ss talents. They can also be very interactive while personally challenging as well. #satchat
Having kids design their own games is, in and of itself, a game-changer! What better way to develop critical and creative thinking than game design? #satchat
A5 Some abilities aren’t reflected by grades. Sometimes you can see what a Ss really knows through a different mode, like a game. It’s also less pressure for some Ss. #satchat
A4: I love Digital Breakouts via Google Sites. They are a hit b/c they encourage the use of many different Ss talents. They can also be very interactive while personally challenging as well. #satchat
Great share Stacy! I agree. I used to have 1/2 a class set of chess mats and pieces. The problem-solving, strategy and multiplayer scenarios always hooked students. #satchat
A3: When students feel, right off the bat, that they can be successful because they have the success criteria to do so and a gamified opportunity -- they thrive. When they thrive, they help each other. When they help each other, the greatest untaught lessons happen. #satchat
I just put it in my @AmazonEdu wishlist. Anything that David recommends is edu-gold; one of the best writers in education, period. PS -hello,friend! #satchat
YES! And feedback is immediate and supportive. Course correction in real time. I turned my essay rubrics into grading spiderweb graphs, and now students can see their progress and reflect on how to grow! #satchat
Don't just consume content, CREATE it!!
My daughters and their friends had a study group sleepover last spring. They created a @quizlet using their review packets and played their own @GetKahoot and @quizizz :-) #edtech for the win! #satchat
A4. Loved quizlet live, but my kids enjoyed it even more when I added some of these twists to the game. I have the say the silent rounds were sooooo fun to watch. https://t.co/GWBN68cGQt#satchat
A5 game based feedback isn’t based in wrong or right answers but often abt strategy, mindfulness, conceptual understanding, acquisition of deep knowledge that transfers to next round- learned this watching my 97 year old mother play games- Jeopardy, dominoes, basketball #satchat
A3: I encourage and promote positive peer-to-peer interactions in my classroom through a bucket filling philosophy that I instill in all my students. https://t.co/36uNzKi6Fg#satchat
I think it is tough being in a large district like mine ... lots of teachers and over 100 schools to monitor ... i wish we would just be held accountable for our actions instead of being pre-disciplined just in case someone wants to Snapchat all day. #satchat

Never thought about it until just now, what if you made those conference ribbons to give to teachers to add to their name badges they have to wear anyway? Or stickers, or pins for "flare". Hmm... anyone do this already? #SatChat
YES! And feedback is immediate and supportive. Course correction in real time. I turned my rubrics into feedback charts (thanks @EquityMaps) and grading spiderweb graphs, and now students can see their progress and reflect on how to grow! #satchat
A5 With the fast-paced, video lifestyle of many Ss, #gamification brings excitement 2 learning. @teachingfactor presented at #NCTE17 w @Wonderopolis team on Inquiry, Games & Wonder: An Introduction to Quest-Based Learning. She is my go-to person on gamification. #satchat
In reply to
@wkrakower, @TeachingFactor, @Wonderopolis
Our district Innovation Team just talked yesterday about having our high school students design @breakoutEDU for our younger grades. Can’t wait to see what they come up with!!! #satchat
OK don't laugh but @Roblox has a game engine. It's like a mini Unity but much more drop & drag not so much coding. I use it with my kids who just can't get unity.
#satchat

Although I don't use them with my youngest students I know @LeachTeach4 is using Single Column rubrics this year and her senior english students are LOVING it #satchat
Hi Jay!! Hope you have seen a copy of my book @TimelessLrng / gaming is one of many strategies that I label as the natural learning of humans - stories, image, movement, games, play, mentor and apprenticeship ... #satchat

A1: Aside from the fact that it's hugely motivational for Ss w/ both intrinsic & extrinsic motivations. #gamification also teaches soft skills such as cooperation, fairness, resilience. Also, someone really smart once said that "#Play is the highest form of research." #satchat
These are really awesome! Sometimes, I forget about things like this because there are so many great gamification tools I can't possibly use them all. #satchat
A4: The digital breakout sandbox! It is always my go to when trying to find an engaging introduction or review activity for a unit. The digital breakouts are engaging and offer a hands on approach to a formative assessment. https://t.co/Zdy1eLgftk#satchat
A4: My favorite tech tool right now is Google+. I implemented this as a pilot this year for students to increase collaboration, communication, and drive. Students can share links for content, start discussions over reading, share writing samples for peer review. #satchat
A6: Collaboration and Competition can be added to a simple warm up set to help engage students. Instead of a standards based review worksheet, I often have my students work on whiteboard with their group to answer the problems and they earn points for correct answers. #satchat
A5: I don’t really have grades in #ESL. Games can reflect an #ELLs social & academic discourse along w/ their vocabulary, grammar, & phonology. #satchat
A3- for my class we have guilds as groups and they compete for victory points based on classwork and other achievements. I post a copy of the guild standings on a leaderboard so everyone sees when’re they are at #satchat
A4: I love @breakoutEDU A nice blend of tech and hands on materials. Super fun challenge with lots of collaboration and can be integrated in any content area. #satchat
A6: Game pieces. Maybe have Ss create their own personal piece. Have them leave it on an exit ticket board at the end of the day as to where they felt they were in there understanding of the days lesson. #satchat
"We'll all think we'll start living 'someday.'
This is just a reminder that today is someday.
This a reminder that your days are numbered, and since you don't know what that number is—you should live the hell out of this day."
#SaturdayMorning#SatChathttps://t.co/GpNcgkMfsB
And we shouldn't be afraid to go "old school" I find my students love the novelty presented in nostalgia from us "old people's" past. From songs, to movie clips, and even games #satchat
YES! And feedback is immediate and supportive. Course correction in real time. I turned my rubrics into feedback charts (thanks @EquityMaps) and grading spiderweb graphs, and now students can see their progress and reflect on how to grow! #satchat
There are two different applications. One is the game play platform other is the game making platform. Also the terms and conditions state rules that your admin will be happy with;)
#satchat
A6 I find something as basic as rolling a die, either on the Smartboard, or I have bought large foam ones. My 7th graders always want to be the one who rolls it. #satchat
Disruption in #education! A colleague once burst into my class when we where engaged in a #Edtech learning activity yelling "what's all this noise about?" Student yelled back .... "we're learning!" 📲💡⚡
#satchat#edchat
A5 Provides opportunities to observe creative thinking & problem solving which are essential skills for the real world. Channel the motivation to win into a motivation to learn! #satchat#gamification
YES! And feedback is immediate and supportive. Course correction in real time. I turned my rubrics into feedback charts (thanks @EquityMaps) and grading spiderweb graphs, and now students can see their progress and reflect on how to grow! #satchat
A6) I use games like puzzles, Pick Up Stix, Barrel of Monkeys and checkers to problem solve with students and help them self regulate and calm down. #satchat
Situational leadership (e.g., Tannenbaum & Schmidt and Hersey & Blanchard). But also, being the first follower (see, e.g., https://t.co/lRg2FATJ22). #satchat
I am such a huge fan of this book for teachers to read! It’s quick and it makes you take a hard look at what you do and why it is not motivating #satchat
A6: add mini-challenges to station work, create a deck of cards from which students can draw challenges, tasks, or even superpowers for a class, post a leader board, form teams... #satchat
I tried so hard with Minecraft. I learned the terms and the concept, but never could get on the level of the students. I had to lean on @kjarrett quite a bit — KJ is the point! He taught me how to regulate the chaos at school — and even how to make a “time out room” IN the game!!
In reply to
@spaul6414, @DCulberhouse, @pammoran, @kjarrett
This book totally changed my practice and thoughts on motivation...practically overnight I switched everything I do! used it as the basis for a few Edcamp presentations as well #satchat
I gamification my whole class last year. There definitely was reluctance to engage, but it helped my catch kids that didn’t engage in the “normal school ways”. Plus the competition ask peck even got the more reluctant ones occasionally. #satchat
A5: Gamification lends itself to #SOLOTaxonomy Instead of using a traditional grade system, it is separated into levels of learning so students can see how they are approaching the standard (end achievement). This is powerful! #satchat#reflectionhttps://t.co/2zxwR7V033
Q4: It depends on the learning outcome but right now, I'd have to say that it's the mix of digital & analogue w/ @ScratchJr & @makeymakey. Ss in our #STEAM centered afterschool program love the #designthinking aspect of it and enjoy tinkering, creating, & coding. #satchat
A6 Teachers can take an inventory of learning for a preassessment warm up and do a scategories based game. Come up with 10 categories for the next unit you do and have 5 letters that hit most vocab picked out to play. #satchat
A6: A simple gamification mechanic you can add to your classroom on Monday is allowing the Ss to collaborate and communicate. Then give them direct feedback on what they do and allow them to instantly go back and test to try again. Kind of like a baby learning to walk. #satchat
A6: Wondering if I can incorporate a game of Clue within the upcoming week since we will be learning about people and places around the school... #satchat
A6: Beat the clock---Students love to be the first one at something. I have students who even love to be the first one in the classroom and will yell "First in!!" even when I am the only one standing at the doorway. :) #satchat
A5: The “Magic Circle” helps students understand the important element/influence of feedback when it comes to engaging in games that support learning. #satchat
A5: Students can go at their own pace. They are Player One...in charge of their own experience. Ss are more engaged when they can personalize their experience..games are for any learning style. I’ve never seen a game that says you can’t continue..you failed. Just sayin’ #Satchat
This has been enlightening on so many levels. It shows what students need in schools from creative ed. leaders to technology. Love learning from you all. #satchat
A6) By adding a little friendly competition through creative challenge, we can engage learners as soon as they walk through the door, activate schema and flex their problem-solving skills. #satchat
#satchat Thank you, @ScottRRocco and @MeehanEDU for the super fun gamification chat this morning - and especially the Bingo! I posted pics and tagged you both. Hope you got them! Thank you also to the 4 people who followed me - I followed you all back!!
A6: Play Doh is a game changer on a Monday morning. In order to refresh the previous week's learning, I might have students mold a depicition of the learning. If we read, have them mold the chapters that we read. If we discussed, mold what discussion looked like. #satchat
THAT'S THE END OF THE CHAT
I've been doing #satchat since the start and always enjoy my Saturday mornings with my PLN!
Today was straight up fun!
Thanks @MeehanEDU
Next week is all about Digital Citizenship.
See you then!
#satchat The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. -1 Cor 2:14
A4) Love the portfolio aspect of @ClassDojo. The kids can showcase their work and parents can offer feedback in the form of a text or video message.#satchat
@321katieyoung Being new to the Twitter world means you start out with #satchat and #growPLN. It is one of the go-to chats that has a far-reaching audience.
A4- I have a few...one is @classcraftgame which is amazing and provides so much to the gamified classroom...check it out if you have not! I also have a spreadsheet where I keep track of victory points and guild standings. But all personal character stuff is in classcraft #satchat
THAT'S THE END OF THE CHAT

Today's #satchat made me remember we need to use the concept of gamification during staff meetings and professional development because adults like to have fun, too!
Empowered learner, digital citizen... How do students get @ISTE-ready? I'll be leading this discussion on the #nt2t chat at 9 a.m. Eastern U.S. time. See you soon! #satchat#pd4uandme
Ooh, I have these too. I think I need to do something with those at our faculty meeting this week. Give everyone a letter and see who can spell the longest word? @DrJacieMaslyk what do you think? :) #satchat
