Twitter Chats are a great way for you and other educators to collaborate, generate new ideas, and discuss various Edmodo-topics. During Twitter Chats, moderators lead a conversation on Twitter about a specific topic using a pre-determined #hashtag on every tweet, and participants can join in the conversation by responding with that #hashtag.
The amazing Edmodo Support Ambassadors organize a Twitter Chat every first and third Sunday of the month at 8pm Eastern using the hashtag #edmodochat.
Hi. I'm Kevin, a former chemistry teacher now manager of community and technical support @edmodo
Super happy to see people chatting about literacy across the curriculum today.

The ThinkCERCA team will be moderating today's chat with @christibcollins. During today's chat we'll be discussing one of our favorite topics, cross-curricular literacy!
Be sure to follow along and respond to the #EdmodoChat questions. 🤗
Ice Breaker - Hello! My name is Cindy and I am a former World Languages educator @BaltCoPS - I loved integrating literacy exercises into all aspects of Spanish proficiency
#Edmodochat
Welcome, everyone! I'm Christi Collins and I teach 2nd grade ELA & Google courses in Higher Ed. Literacy is the biggest component of my curriculum. #Edmodochat
Hi all! I’m Ava, a science teacher and instructional coach based in Brooklyn, currently working to support teachers’ use of technology and literacy resources in all content areas with @ThinkCERCA#EdmodoChat
Howdy! I'm a Teacher Advocate at Edmodo and a former science & comp sci teacher. Literacy is vital in everything I teach because it's the backbone of how we receive and communicate information. #EdmodoChat#Literacy
A1: Literacy is arguably the most important skill Ss learn. Ss probably don't need to know the ins and outs of stoichiometry in their day-to-day lives. But, literacy skills allow Ss to communicate and learn better.
#EdmodoChat#literacy
A1: S’s must learn that literacy exists in all subject areas. Must help S's recognize that you don’t only “do science” in science class, you don’t only “do english” in english class, etc. S’s will be more prepared for using interdisciplinary skills more in the future #EdmodoChat
A1. A lot of my math students wanted to become engineers and I can't stress enough how important it is to be able to communicate both verbally and in writing. There's no excuse to not practice these skills in a math classroom!
#EdmodoChat
A1 great way for Ss to build knowledge, attach meaning across multiple areas, enhances learning potential and helps Ss to communicate better, #edmodochat
A1: after students complete their formal education, they will find that the vast majority of reading and writing they will do in life is not bound by academic subject. Our literacy education must prepare them accordingly! #EdmodoChat#Literacy#thinkforward

{edmodo: RT sandramc59: A1 Oh for sure. Life is not divided into subjects, why should school be? Plus literacy is important in all facets of edu and life! #EdmodoChat]
A1:the most important thing for me is learning to think critically and to separate the truth from #post-truth and manipulation https://t.co/zhYAVSjZjo#EdmodoChat
A1: Since reading & writing aren't something we "naturally" do, we have to learn and constantly practice this skill. This is only fair, since everything in life requires some type of literacy skill (writing, speaking, reading, etc) to communicate. #Edmodochat
A1: The NGSS practices are quite clear on the importance of literacy - Engaging in -Argument from Evidence. Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information: must be able to communicate clearly and persuasively. #edmodochat
A2: One school I work with in NYC did this. The English teacher spoke to the Science teacher and realized there were many opportunities for S’s to practice literacy skills in English that aligned with the Science content they were learning. https://t.co/fVbnMDlIDd#EdmodoChat
A2 It is always my goal. For example we were learning about wind in Science and Reflections in math - my kids made kites and we read and wrote poems about kites and wind. More fun for me, makes it stick in their brains! Easier to do when I have them 4 every subject. #EdmodoChat
A2: By nature, science reading materials (especially under new NextGen standards) are already quite interdisciplinary. I try to include a "current event", relevant article, or science career spotlight into my activities every week. #EdmodoChat#literacy
A2: I correlated my lessons with SS because I taught that subject also. I also worked with the science teachers when they were working on reports for citing resources properly #Edmodochat#medialiteracy#literacy
#edmodochat A2 I tap into their prior knowledge across the curriculum. Our ESL academy is complementary to our National School System. Our approach is holistic, MI based and CLIL-framed .We participate in global events and deal with multiple fields of study.
{edmodo: RT christibcollins: Q2: #Edmodochat - Do you correlate lessons to what Ss are learning in other subjects? Any examples to share? https://t.co/RYxwQ8V6pj]
A2: Always the goal. However, for something to be truly crosscurricular, you must teach the skills explicitly. Just saying it includes ELA because SS are presenting is not crosscurricular unless you are teaching presentation skills, too. #edmodochat
A2 Not intentionally, but my students sometimes tell me that what I'm teaching they learned about in history. It's an opportunity that I've never pursued. #Edmotochat#edmodochat
A2: Correlating lessons may be a little difficult, but coordinating strategies to make learning visible is a good step to reinforce cross-curricular skills. #edmodochat#ELLocdsb
A2- I always found PBL to be a great way to do this. When planning a project I always try to integrate skills that students are learning in other areas. #Edmodochat
#EdmodoChat Welcome for all.I am pleased to join Edmodo chat .I am Hasan from Egypt . I am ECT,Edmodo Ambassador ,luminary and translate for Arabic. Also I own an online academy fully depend on Edmodo feature
A2: cont - The new KQeD Learn platform is a prime example of cross-curricular integration. Ss investigate a current/relevant topic and publish to an authentic audience (all Ss participating) using a variety of digital media. Learn more at https://t.co/X4sF42R5gW#edmodochat
{edmodo: RT MarianaGSerrato: A2: Always the goal. However, for something to be truly crosscurricular, you must teach the skills explicitly. Just saying it includes ELA because SS are presenting is not crosscurricular unless you are teaching presentation skills, too. #edmodochat]

#Edmodochat Q2:I try to incorporate tier 2 vocab that I know Ss will see in other classes but at the HS level it's hard to know what the other classes are doing at any given time. I don't see as much cross responsibility for literacy as I think is needed
#edmodochat A3 They apply their L1 thinking skills and their L2 integrated skills to learning paths that deal with close reading comprehension through top-down and bottom -up strategies.
A3: The best ways I’ve had S’s analyze, infer, reflect, extrapolate, and discuss are when conducting experiments and studying experimental design. Each one of those are discrete skills I’ve tried to scaffold throughout the year, and they really come to life in labs #EdmodoChat
A3. What's amazing about this question is that this is exactly what makes a good math lesson. I love getting students to communicate about their analysis of a problem, then their guesses and predictions, followed by the solution method and reflection. #EdmodoChat
A3: Every lesson includes opportunities for students to use analysis skills. It's challenging but more rewarding for students to constantly work to receive the next piece of the puzzle. Predict & justify, & teach students to have no fear of being wrong! #EdmodoChat#literacy
A1) In the modern classroom, students are immersed in learning experiences that transcend beyond the 4 walls and rigid bell schedules maintained from a bygone era. #edmodochat
A3: My students were constantly analyzing, inferring, reflecting, extrapolating, and discussing by writing, speaking and listening? Check out the DOK Q Stem Chart https://t.co/DSg3JkkHsr#edmodochat
A2 In my #STEAM course, I try to find out what they are learning in other classes, so we can work on creating something in our class, show connections and collaborate w/other Ts #Edmodochat
A3- It's so important to explicitly teach students how to participate in academic discourse. There is a lot of direct instruction and modeling that needs to happen. #Edmodochat
A3: I recommend to you, a debate "walking" #co-resolve. it consists of ... the ability to listen to each other first of all the student - acceptance, tolerance, no stereotypes.
https://t.co/Veu53FnxTW#EdmodoChat
A3 so many ways for Ss to do this whether in class, or outside of class using #edtech or no-tech, definitely have built on these skills through #pbl and connecting w/other classrooms #Edmodochat
Completely agree. You have to give sentence frames for those who need them, and provide opportunities for practice. Just saying "discuss at your tables" is not enough. #edmodochat
A3 - journal; exit ticket prompts; sentence stems; completion of _____ has; _____ is; ______ does; turn & talk to a partner; respond to text with hand (literal), head (infer), heart (text to self) #edmodochat#ELLocdsb
Q4: #EdmodoChat - How can teachers make writing more “hands on” and engaging for students while also teaching them close reading strategies in all content areas?
A3: I use #edpuzzle to analyze my Ss understanding of audio files. I also use #Flipgrid for my student to publish their work. I then have my Ss review the publish work and comment on it. #edmodochat
A2 always wanted to do this--Study racism in English, reading Warriors Don't Cry, history they watch 13th and the 13th amendment, and Brown v Board, and science talks about false research that whites were more intelligent and the impact of that "research" on us today #edmodochat
A4: Students are most engaged in writing exercises when they are personally connected to the topic. Peer evaluation of each others' writing is a great way to practice reading strats while building stronger classroom culture #EdmodoChat#literacy#peerevaluation
A4 I always looked for ways to make reading and writing more authentic. If they saw the relevance they were more likely to engage. One fun activity was having 5th graders tweet about relevant issues. https://t.co/B4Qc3BfM1r#spotlightlove#EdmodoChat
A4: Make writing hands on by providing many opportunities for writing that take different forms. In Science, I have students draw and label diagrams, use Graphic Organizers, caption a series of images to show scientific processes, etc. #EdmodoChat
A4: My students and I used to make group/class stories using google docs. We would all take a story prompt and I would assign them a part of the story to create and then we would try to combine them. #Edmodochat#chaos#madlibs
Those are great tools for Ss to use for so many purposes, have had Ss create their own @edpuzzle lessons and we use @Flipgrid w/ @edmodo for our #pbl and also for doing speaking assessments and reflections #Edmodochat
In reply to
@MlleShaffer, @edpuzzle, @Flipgrid, @edmodo
A4: I have been requesting that students use their written essays as a roadmap to other products (infographics, ignite presentations, interactive maps). Once they realize the value of the well crafted essay as a starting point, they are more willing to revise it #edmodochat
#edmodochat A3 by making my students the center of education process.they listen first for the lesson and answer a few assignment of it .then they prepare their questions and how they prefere their activities
#Edmodochat Students need the opportunity to TALK about what they are going to write. This gives them an opportunity to organize and get their thoughts together before they write. If Ss can't talk about something how can we expect them to write about it?
#Edmodochat
A4- What really motivates my students is when they can create their own digital books. My 5th grade studes love using https://t.co/CESePq81UQ and I love that it is free :)
#Edmodochat
Curious as to how @ThinkCERCA helps students analyze, infer, reflect, extrapolate, and discuss across subject areas? Would love to know more!#EdmodoChat
A4 - make Ss' responses low risk by allowing use of sentence stems/frames; provide vocabulary word boxes; encourage elbow partner sharing instead of whole class response #edmodochat#ELLocdsb
A2: Teaching a self-contained class allows me the freedom 2 “remix” themes. No designated time 4 indiv subj. they are seamlessly interwoven. i.e. When learning abt interned Japanese, calculated their monthly income while in camp & wrote a poem from thr perspective. #EdmodoChat
A4: The book can be a starting point for social campaigns or teaching about equality and culture of other countries or about social behaviors such as an assertive attitude. I love Whitman, Miłosz, Herbert and Frost as the beginning of work #PBL with #SDGs#EdmodoChat
A4: I've had students write crazy stories by each student writing one line at a time. This was useful when teaching various tense in French #edmotochat#edmodochat
A2) Absolutely! Students should have the freedom to choose their learning journey. Whether they choose to be a CDC Scientist or Smithsonian Curator, students should have the power to choose. #edmodochat
A5: I was besties with the librarian she had great media literacy lessons and helped SS use media literacy sources on cross-curricular projects. This was so important to create confident critical thinkers! #EdmodoChat
#edmodochat A5 By engaging in learning paths that include transmedia content fostering soft and hard skills. They are important because as globally connected through social media , we all need #digcit skills and multiliteracies to decode our phigital world.
A5: Technology & communication have evolved. Students need fluency in public speaking, creating videos & podcasts, & social medial literacy in addition to traditional reading & writing. Students also enjoy those activities the most! #EdmodoChat#literacy#21stcenteryskills
A5: Ss use media to do research. Media literacy varies widely (history, art, science, tech, etc.) - learning how to read and navigate to all of these, and make sure sources are reputable are SO important. Imagine not realizing an article from @TheOnion wasn't satire?
#EdmodoChat
A5 Ss need to develop the skills to determine whether a source is reliable or not, develop the critical thinking skills and determine real or fake news, it also helps Ss to become more globally aware and develop #digcit skills #Edmodochat
We're all about making sure Ss have a common framework to use when practicing literacy and argumentation across subjects. ☺️ Our writing lessons provide sentence frames to help Ss organize their writing. That's just the tip of the iceberg! https://t.co/nZQZtkXGJx#EdmodoChat
Curious as to how @ThinkCERCA helps students analyze, infer, reflect, extrapolate, and discuss across subject areas? Would love to know more!#EdmodoChat
A5. My students' favorite math project was creating videos! They had to script their scenes (including the math explanations) before getting to record anything. This appealed to those students who really enjoyed performing or those who had strong tech skills. #EdmodoChat
A5 finding info is so easy today, as opposed to when I had to search the dewey decimal system, look through a book to decide if reliable, now we need to teach that the 1st Google search result is not the most reliable #Edmodochat
A5: manipulation and persuasion are not only advertisements and virals but also tabloids, business and propaganda. most of the work examples, so that students do not succumb to demagogy with #posttruth#EdmodoChat
A1: I'm able to do cross-curricular activities most easily with my AP Lang kids especially since the APUSH teacher is my BFF. Reading The Jungle for both classes makes them approach writing through two different lenses
#Edmodochat

A6: My classroom was divided into 4 sections - listening, reading, writing and speaking and Ss got to choose from a variety of activities to complete each section.
#EdmodoChat
A3: You just described my ELA classes, no matter the grade level. I rely heavily on graphic organizers (SOAPSTone, OPTIC, TP-CASST) to teach the skills, then just practice those skills all year long
#Edmodochat
#edmodochat A6 We engage in lesson plans or PBL that include #stuvoice, choice and variety through hyperdocs, livebinders or notebooks enhanced with interactives and virtual world explorations.
A5 (vol.2) we do our own advertisements to get to know the mechanisms. we are looking for #FakeNews and analyze politicians' speeches. I teach rhetoric techniques and read dystopian texts to see the effects of social inactivity
#EdmodoChat
A6: As simple as it sounds, any introductory vocabulary activities I have used have helped to build S’s literacy skills. Especially in #SciEd where we have so much academic vocabulary #EdmodoChat

A6: one of my favorite activities is to ask students to write something from the perspective of a historical figure (also demonstrate content mastery): e.g. write a letter as geologist Alfred Wegener to defend the Continental Drift theory #EdmodoChat#literacy
Yikes! I would always tell my kiddos - Love that you are reading, and right now we are doing math so can you but the book down... #lifelongreaders#EdmodoChat
I have seen some Ss with 3 or 4 books they are reading at the same time, but they will not read the books required in their English or Spanish classes, have struggled w/ideas for this #Edmodochat
love this, also from different perspectives of charactersi in novels; even made video and wrote narration from perspective of different animals in the food web! #edmodochat
A3) Student artifact and product output is often determined by the skillful design and innovative vision of the educator. Students may choose the path, but we burn the trail. #edmodochat
A6: one of my favorite activities is to ask students to write something from the perspective of a historical figure (also demonstrate content mastery): e.g. write a letter as geologist Alfred Wegener to defend the Continental Drift theory #EdmodoChat#literacy
A6: Lots of Ss choice in the different ways to communicate their ideas, to the point of having a general product rubric since you never know what form the end product will take https://t.co/UU9bPdSoEt#edmodochat
A6: Ss run a blog, participate in an online drama where they can get into the chosen hero take his perspective. they do #lapbooks and #SDGs happenings to understand the real effects of given behaviors https://t.co/amOK5lvpxv#EdmodoChat
