I'm Katie Jacobsen and I am a freshman at Indiana University studying to be a TAL educator. My favorite thanksgiving leftover is all of the dishes put into an amazing sandwich. #ditchbook

Hey hey, #DitchBook peeps! Matt here, from Indiana, head textbook ditcher by trade.
Fave Thanksgiving leftover? Turkey. It's versatile. Sandwiches. Casserole. It goes on and on.
A1: Coding is so important b/c it is becoming a required skill in the workforce; as teachers, we must provide Ss with the skills they will need in life; Coding is the language of tech! #ditchbook
Oh. My. Goodness. That sounds amazing. Must try.
Or take it to the next level ... I saw a FB post by @FelixJacomino where he made a Thanksgiving leftovers EMPANADA with all of the things in it. Looks unbelievable. #DitchBook
A1: It's an important inclusion because so much more of the world beyond the classroom is immersed in coding. Having a basic bit of knowledge could make a huge difference when it comes to employability! #ditchbook
A1: Coding is the language of the future in many ways.
Apple's Tim Cook says it's a more important second language to learn than ENGLISH. And I tend to agree.

A1: Code is now part of the fabric of our society. The more you know the more you can participate. Also potential hook for individuals w/ learning differences. #ditchbook
A1: The #HourofCode is important b/c the jobs that we are preparing our students to hold on day have a larger base of coding work. Anyone who learns to code finds the usefulness in their lives. #ditchbook
Very true. Just think about the new applied dig. skills from @google. They are encouraging that for students to be ready when they enter the workforce. #ditchbook

A1 Coding and comp a sci are closely related to problem solving skills and are of course incredibly high demand skill sets in today’s workplace. #ditchbook
A1: It builds 21st skills like collaboration, critical thinking & problem solving. These are skills Ss will need in school & future careers. #DitchBook
Here to support my team #DitchBook friend @herrplatt as he talks Hour of Code tonight. I defer to those with much more wisdom to share. Hope to learn lots from all of you.
This is an amazing take on coding, I always thought of coding as it's own thing instead of the idea that the skills can be applied to all subjects #ditchbook
A2: FOOD. Food always engages Ss! :-) But, to be serious, applying real world problems or "coding quests" to solve, so that's it's relevant to their lives now along with when they become professionals. #ditchbook
A2 Having students find a passion in coding by engaging them with projects and contests. My college course had an amazing time thinking this over with the idea of steps and algorithms. #ditchbook
A2: By engaging the Ss in real life and relevant projects that involve coding. Check out the Applied Digital Skills Curriculumby @GoogleForEdu#DitchBook
Is that even a term?! I was just simply referring to offering Ss a dilemma a company or customer may face and then the Ss could solve it using coding of some sort. #ditchbook
A2: Finding real life examples of when/where coding is needed. Have them code something of their own. Sphereoballs and BBots are wonderful to engage Ss #ditchbook
I keep telling our 1st T that coding can totally be used to help her Ss learn how to read, sequence, patterns, etc. She is still reluctant :( #ditchbook
A2: Finding different tech tools that allow for implementing code into the daily class is important! @codeorg is a great one that I have used before; there is so much potential #ditchbook
A2 I love the unplugged ideas for teaching precoding skills. There are lots of resources at https://t.co/dX0WjSZSKX It gets kids thinking in the systematic and sequential way for moving into coding #ditchbook
Yes and no. I find they have more trouble with and web design. But I use it as part of the process. #ditchbook. Some get it faster than others and some have past me waaay up.
A2 Generally when coding you start with the end in mind. Coding is the process to get you there. To extend past an hour, pick a bigger end. Make it more relevant to the Ss! #ditchbook
That was truly news to me. I really didn't realize that such young children are able to accomplish this work, but of course they can. Anyone can do anything they put their mind to!! Im excited to incorporate this in my classroom one day #ditchbook
A2 Make the lessons real. #MakeItReal More than just code, what can students do with a career in code? I have a group of our students doing a Skype session with the developers of one of their favorite apps. #DitchBook
A1: Incorporate Ss goals into coding. Littles can learn shapes/numbers while coding w/Bee-Bots, art Ss can design while coding w/ @madewithcode#DitchBook
A2 Make the lessons real. #MakeItReal More than just code, what can students do with a career in code? I have a group of our students doing a Skype session with the developers of one of their favorite apps. #DitchBook
A2: Late But finally here! Coding can definitely eat unplugged. Some team building activities out there fit an unplugged coding experience. Problem solving, sequencing, & cause/effect are big parts of coding.#DitchBook
A3- Coding is an easy integration into math courses. I always teach it in our Math teacher prep courses at @ConverseCollege Ss are fascinated with binary language at the college level bc so many have never encountered it! #ditchbook
A celebrity video chat with your class???
You and your students can win one!
Tag your Hour of Code creation with #HourOfCode and you could win!

A3 showing them that our world is changing to embrace the technological skills that are required to succeed, having resources and a club for students to join #ditchbook#HourofCode
A2 Make the lessons real. #MakeItReal More than just code, what can students do with a career in code? I have a group of our students doing a Skype session with the developers of one of their favorite apps. #DitchBook
A3: I think that Code is applicable to any subject! Find something that interests students in the subject area and find a way to implement coding! Maybe create their own game based on solving math problems? The possibilities are endless #ditchbook
A3 In music an hour of practice a week is better utilized in several shorter sessions than one long one. Keep #hourofcode going by letting it infuse across several days! #ditchbook
A3: Start with #HourofCode and then steadily incorporate it into lessons as the year progresses. Assists Ss in staying current and continuing to hone their skills. I need to incorporate this more in my own classroom. #ditchbook
Bootstrap is a great CSS (API I guess it'd be called.) It helps to frame website. The hard part is learning how to call all the bootstrap CSS. #ditchbook
