"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com
Welcome to #EdTechAfterDark! I'm Dan, 1/3 of this crew, Tech TOSA, and I'll be hosting tonight! We'll be chatting about how to best cultivate cultures of creativity in schools. Introduce yourself, role in EDU, and the last thing you truly got to be creative with.
Heard @pbriggs728 today ... CRT ... awesome considerations when we work with students - in our classrooms, are we providing opportunities for ALL & do we truly have HIGH expectations for all? 🤔 #EdTechAfterDark
Dene chiming in from the city beautiful (Orlando). Grades 4-5 ELA/Tech/Gifted Teacher. The most recent creative project was a song I wrote about UDL (Universal Design for Learning) #edtechafterdark
A1 Creativity is making something new out of something old - giving new life to an idea ... in my job, “finding a need, filling that need” ☺️ #EdTechAfterDark
Q1: To me being creative is an opportunity to show who you are and what is important to you through your work. Letting your mind and intuition lead you. #EdTechAfterDark

Running late but here. Claudio, instructional tech coordinator from @DvilleTech Created a time-lapse of clouds this evening during daughters soccer game #edtechafterdark
A1 Creativity is finding solutions to problems in unlikely places. Greater creativity means greater disparity between the challenge of the problem and the unlikeliness of the solution. As #techdir, my creativity is often budget driven! #edtechafterdark
A2 For HS ENG, hands-on is writing ... I do like to use different mediums - paper, white boards, computer ... practicing in small chunks to build confidence to the full essay #EdTechAfterDark
A2: means that students are directing the learning and constructing what it means to them. It can look drastically different from classroom to classroom. #edtechafterdark
A2: Giving the students something that gets their hands messy! Something that they must invest in and then bringing that project to an audience. Creating an experience not a lesson #UMedTech#EDL577UM#EdTechAfterDark
A2 Hands-on learning means doing and creating instead of just seeing and listening. As Ts, follow the cliche "guide on the side, not sage on the stage" and let Ss explore the subject! #edtechafterdark
A2 I think “hands-on” is when Ss are creating & expressing there own understand w/ references, examples, and discussions. When students take on their own learning it’s hands on. A great “hands-on” tool I love is @Flipgrid#StudentVoices#edtechafterdark
A2: Ideally it means putting your hands on something, but I further see it as acting...(not drama) but maybe drama at the same time...busy engaging in...moving and shaking..different ways of thinking. #edtechafterdark
A2: Hands-on Learning, to me, is anything that creates avenues for learners to interact with concepts, content, and create their own meaning from lessons. #EdTechAfterDark
Engineering projects with Enrichment students. Real world problem - 3D model solution that solves problem - has to meet restrictions, limitations and guidelines..may require multiple tries to develop reasonable product #edtechafterdark
"Hands-on" is experiential education as expressed by Dewey. Students discover, use, and most importantly, interact with their learning. #edtechafterdark
A2: As a social studies teacher, I see hands-on as students doing their own research & on their own topics. Then CREATING to demonstrate their understanding. #EdTechAfterDark
Not scripted, I think I am even creative in that way too, and often going with the flow, but yes I scaffold, and have them refer to videos and think about previous discussions, etc.#edtechafterdark

A3: First thought is with invention. Can see what is "already" out there as a means to substitute, augment, modify, redefine or just go off the scale completely #edtechafterdark
I've had Ts concerned about them getting too far off track, they just need to build in key checkpoints to make sure they're not too far off. Some corrections can be student led, some have to be made by the Teacher - it's a team effort. #EdTechAfterDark
A3 different tools allow for different learners to meet the standards ... it can also help teachers assess more accurately the mastery of standards (as long as rubric focuses on content instead of aesthetics) #EdTechAfterDark
Totally in agreement here. Which is why I feel that creativity is learned/taught. Which is how it is developed. I believe I am creative due to the environments I have been in, thus cultivating it! #edtechafterdark

A3: I think technology allows those of all Multiple Intelligences capable of creating. From movie creations, graphic design, creating ads to save the world, public speaking, engineering with a 3d printer, the possibilities are endless! #UMedTech#EDL577UM#EdTechAfterDark
A3 I have some students that want tondo creative art projects but dont like their drawing skills. Tech allows them to be more satisfied with their work. #EdTechAfterDark
A2: It means the learner is hands-on while teacher is hands-off! Nothing makes more impact on learning like actually doing the learning. For example, learn photoshop while using it! #edtechafterdark
A3 #accessibility is one of the best features of #edtech, when done right! Provide a way for all learners to express their ideas and concept mastery on a widely understood platform and your #edtech will be doing its job. #edtechafterdark
Wow! This truly demonstrates the power of technology to accelerate learning and/or provide equity & access to ALL students! Thanks for sharing! #EdTechAfterDark
A3 Tech Tools@such as the Learning Tools in @MicrosoftEDU products and @mstranslator give ELs equal footing to be creative. If the my don’t understand they can’t create. #edtechafterdark
A4: In #jonsmithclass I give the teachers a pile of tech toys to play with. They get one hour to figure out how to use it and find ways to incorporate into their classes. I won’t speak to them or answer any questions for 30 minutes. Does that count? #EdTechAfterDark
A4: I tend to provide random and sometimes strange items to students for them to creatively perceive ways in which to use the items to accomplish their task of construction. I watch and provide little to no guidance, maybe a scaffold here and there. #edtechafterdark
A4 not sure about self-paced ideation .... but I do believe a core attribute of being innovative is the ability to be comfortable with discomfort ☺️ #EdTechAfterDark
A4: I have learned to do my best to be a guide but not a Boss... I think its so important to not tell them something is a bad idea when creating. Students have amazing wild ideas that our "adultness" doesn't even begin to comprehend #UMedTech#EDL577UM#EdTechAfterDark
A3: It gives Ss options. Back when I was a kid, you had to do a written report. That's it! Now, Ss that are visual learners can create videos, musical Ss can create music & ELLs can also tech to share their voice #edtechafterdark
A4 As a T, letting Ss self-pace is super hard. Support their ideation and guide their direction. Giving them self check-in points ahead of time is critical. They can self pace, but they should have established check-points with you along the way! #edtechafterdark
A4: I think one key thing in here is the fact that us adults have to be able to accept the ideas that come "outside of the box". A formative assessment does not have to be scanned or even turned in via a piece of paper. Passion projects, quick conversations, etc. #EdTechAfterDark
A5 I taught my sts 1 #sketchnotes this year, 2 white boards on all walls, and 3 #springboardpl uses Revision Assistant to helps sts learn to revise their writing #EdTechAfterDark
A5: @RJPalacio 's 365 Days of Wonder - a quote a day introduced by me and discussed with S's became S's volunteering to lead and discuss with S's which led to S's finding quotes to share which led to S's creating their own quotes! #Eduwin#creativity#edtechafterdark
A5b I have my ELLs share their culture through visual presentations of their countries. They create artifacts to show cultural examples. #edtechafterdark
Q5: I've personally seen and used Google Tour in the classroom. Loved the freedom given to students to explore different parts of the world and create their own adventure. #edtechafterdark
Similarly, mine is when my sts come up with a different answer based on a different perspective coming from a different background ... brilliance! #EdTechAfterDark
A5: We use all these tools to create big type projects that Ss engage in. We are currently working on a shark tank project and Ss use Google sites to make their presentations, & google draw to design blue prints, & prototypes with 3D printing. #UMedTech#EDL577UM#EdTechAfterDark
Why thank you, it has been an amazing development. Students are empowered. We have quotes all over the walls of the classroom as a result. I wish I had a picture. #edtechafterdark
I love this! Adding this to my toolbox. Having personally worked in a bilingual classroom, I know the fear that exists when speaking your nonnative language in front of a crowd #edtechafterdark
When I taught digital graphics Ss would draw cartoon characters in Illustrator or make detailed graphic infused videos after school or when they were finished with coursework. Eventually that became the coursework. Creating their own assignment sparked creativity #edtechafterdark
A6 I’m going to continue with my standards-based planning and assessing/grading ... I want to see what I can do to give choice, opportunity, & high expectations for ALL sts #EdTechAfterDark
A6: I learned so much about UDL last week. That plus a general focus on the individual student can open us up to expanding our approach..by that I mean allowing for creativity to rise. "Plan openly to allow for students to learn creatively." #edtechafterdark
A6: Choice Boards and Genius Hour are two ways educators can make the transition from a teacher-centered classroom (static) to a learner-centered one (dynamic).
#EdTechAfterDark
A6: I think the idea of changing the mindset of a typical classroom observation where you turn it into a positive. Trying out a pineapple chart model or something similar. #edtechafterdark
A6: I think the idea of changing the mindset of a typical classroom observation where you turn it into a positive. Trying out a pineapple chart model or something similar. #edtechafterdark
A6 Support a culture in which it is OK to fail. Growth comes from failure. Regardless your level: Ts support Ss failing, As support Ts failing, Ps support both failing, knowing that growth (and learning!) coming as a result is the best change we could hope for! #edtechafterdark
A6 Presenting on @Newsela to my colleagues tomorrow. Showing how current event articles can be assigned at 5 different reading levels. #edtechafterdark
A6: Give them more opportunities to solve their own problems. When asked we too quickly answer. We need to give students more time to think through it and break their bad habit of "dependentness" on their teachers/adults. #UMedTech#EDL577UM#EdTechAfterDark
Glad I stayed up :) Thanks for the chat everyone! And thanks to @danvkoch for moderating. Remember to follow those with ideas you found challenging, interesting, or otherwise #creative! #edtechafterdark
Why @danvkoch Thanks for being awesome and for guiding this ship or train...full steam ahead. Creativity and its cultivation is so important!! #edtechafterdark
